If there is a single key to managing a mineral extraction company, it is the control of productivity. American labor costs, in general, tend to be in the range of 10%-15% of total costs. American coal mining labor costs, however, exhibit ranges of 30%-60% of total costs. Is it any wonder that the industry finds itself at a competitive disadvantage? When labor costs take as much as sixty cents of every dollar of revenue, there is little room for profitability. The American coal mining industry must set as a long range goal the reduction of labor costs to the 10%-15% range of total costs in order to be competitive.

"Colored gemstones are most often mined in small scale artisanal mining operations. Sri Lanka is well known as source for precious stones since thousands of years. Gemstones are mine in small open pits, directly in rivers (river dredging) and in underground mines. Almost all mined deposits are alluvial deposits. PRECIOUS STONES AND DEPOSITS Precious stones from Sri Lanka are well known for thousands of years. Tales and legends from Arabia, India, China and reports from discoverers like Marco Polo describe the fabulous stones from Ceylon which was the name for Sri Lanka before 1972. Already 1000 BC King Salomon got valuable gemstones from the legendary Queen of Sheba on her visit to Jerusalem. Paintings (frescoes) of the “cloud maidens” with huge gemstones can be seen at the “mirror walls” of the Sigiriya rock fortress - one of the eight World Heritages Sites of Sri Lanka.And even today some of the most valuable and most desired gemstones come from Sri Lanka. The term “Ceylon Sapphire” stands for an excellent royal blue color of high quality corundum from Sri Lanka. Reason enough to look a bit closer how these gemstones are mined. Sri Lanka has rich gemstone deposits which are mined underground, in small open pits or directly within a river. Some of the primary deposits in magmatic and metamorphic rock are also known, but most gemstones are mined in secondary alluvial deposits. Gem bearing deposits can be found in a band from NW to SE. Highly probable deposits and main mining areas can be found around Ratnapura – the city of gems, down to the coast (Matale) and up to the region around Elahera. These secondary deposits are mostly thin layers of gravel and sand, so called “illam”. The depth can vary between some dm to 10 25 m or even almost 40 m. But the average depth is about 12 m. Gemstone mining is controlled, licensed and regulated by a special authority – the National Gem and Jewelry Authority - which was founded in 1993. Another task of this authority is the promotion and development of the gemstone industry and the control of import and export of gemstones. Any violence of the NGJA law can lead to a fine or even up to 5 years imprisonment. To increase the confidence in the gemstone industry the Authority offers a unique service to foreigners. All bought gemstones can be tested free of charge in certain laboratories in Ratnapura and Colombo. So visitors can be sure they got no imitations, wrong stones or even synthetic stones or glass. It was said that detected synthetic stones will be destroyed and the seller will do all he can to replace the stone with the right stone. Otherwise he will lose his license."

Diatomite deposits, the skeletal remains of tiny aquatic plants called diatoms, are found in many parts of the world. Only a few of these de- posits are of commercial value. Open pit mining is used in nearly all deposits now being worked. Processing methods range from simple drying, crushing, sizing and packaging to carefully controlled and highly sophisticated calcining and air classification procedures, employing the latest control and testing techniques. The major uses of processed diatomite are in filtration as filter aids and fillers and extenders.

Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

On April 10, 1958 a new 7500 long ton/day iron ore beneficiation plant went on stream producing an average of 3000 long-tons of high quality concentrate a day. Plant operates on two, 12-hour shifts is six days per week, The new mill end crust ink plant were built adjacent to the company's open pit dining operate on at Bomi Hills, Liberia. The mall is essentially a gravity concentrator employing crushing, and grinding to liberate the mineral values, followed by concentration in Humphreys spirals. The cleaner spiral tailings are re-ground and tabled to recover additional iron values. One critical element of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Bureau) autonomous mining research program is the development of a reliable coal interface detection (CID) system. Several candidate CID concepts currently being investigated by the Bureau include vibration, passive infrared, radar, and natural gamma radiation (NGR). To establish which CID sensor technologies need to be developed for a given seam, coal and adjacent rock samples (i.e., immediate roof and floor) are being collected from selected major coal seams in the U.S. and are being analyzed in terms of NGR and other geophysical measurements. Results of the NGR measurements indicate that, in general, all shale and shale-like materials (e.g., drawslate, slate, and fireclay) have higher NGR readings than the coal seam. Consequently the NGR method appears to be a potentially useful CID tool, provided that the immediate roof and floor are both composed of a high percentage of shale-type material.

In Australia's remote North West are located the operations of Cliffs Robe River, one of the world's largest iron ore projects. Initial project cost was $US300 million and required the construction of a deepwater port, two toms for 3000 people, a 105 Mw power station and 170 km of railroad, all in harsh, arid country over 1300 km from the nearest industrial centre. The ore occurs as goethite cappings on scattered mesas and averages 57 percent iron. All aspects of the project are reviewed from pre-operational research, through project construction to current operation.

The trip from Denver southwest to Gunnison crosses seven main geologic and physiographic areas as shown on the accompanying map. These are: I Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Denver Metro area from downtown Denver to the foothills near Morrison. II Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Front Range from near Morrison to the west side of Kenosha Pass. III Sedimentary and volcanic rocks of South Park (Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Tertiary) from the west side of Kenosha Pass to Trout Creek Pass. IV Precambrian granitic rocks (1,350-1,480 M.Y.) between Trout Creek Pass and the Arkansas River. V Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks and sediments of the Arkansas River valley. VI Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the Sawatch uplift from Maysville to near Doyleville on the west side of Monarch Pass. VII Mostly sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age from the Doyleville area west to beyond Gunnison. Each area will be elaborated in the following pages but no detailed road log is given since these are available elsewhere. An attempt has been made to point out some deposits and features of interest to economic geologists but it is by no means complete.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. During the past three years, coal samples covering a range of coal rank, ash content, size consist, grindability, and moisture content have been tested for their flow properties using a triaxial shear tester that measures the unconfined yield strength in a compressed sample of coal. The ratio of this unconfined yield strength to the sample bulk density is part of the equation used by handling system manufacturers to calculate the critical arching or critical ratholing diameter needed to ensure that coal will flow from bunkers or bins. This ratio also serves as an index to compare the flow tested. To test the applicability of the index to predicting problems with coal flow, a series of tests were conducted at CO Inc.'s Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania. Tests covering ranges in size consist, moisture content, and ash content were conducted by first filling a small two-ton bin with coal and then emptying the bin at a pre-set discharge rate. The actual discharge rate from the bin under the various conditions tested was measured. Samples of the coal discharging from the bin were collected. One sample was analyzed for ash, moisture, and size consist; another sample was sent to the Iowa state University for trivial shear tests (supplying an index measurement). Actual flowability results from the bin were then compared to the measured index to determine the applicability of the handleability index in actually predicting coal flow problems. This paper describes the correlation between handleability index and bin flow and explains the next stages of the project.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most refractory copper mineral when treated in conventional sulfate media leaching systems. This is the first study to examine the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (CH3SOCH3, DMSO) solution containing copper chloride (CuCl2) for the leaching of chalcopyrite. Leaching experiments for a copper concentrate composed mainly of chalcopyrite were conducted at ambient pressure at 313–413 K. The leaching fractions of Cu, Fe, S, Au, and As were investigated. It was found that 90% of the Cu was extracted in 2 h, and 94% was extracted in 4 h at 373 K, which is competitive with other conventional processes. A DMSO solution containing CuCl2 could selectively dissolve the valuable metals Cu and Au from chalcopyrite, but leave minerals with little economic value such as pyrite (FeS2) and As in the residue. Chalcopyrite is oxidized by cupric ion in proportion to the stoichiometric ratio of Cu in the concentrate to the initial cupric ion in the DMSO solution, which is enhanced by the presence of oxygen below 373 K.

Mineral exploration is a key factor for success in the mining industry. However, exploration best practices are often ignored in small-scale mining. This works presents the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a methodology that measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small-scale mining with the industry best practices. The matrix has been applied to three projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the state of Pará, a small-scale manganese project in the state of Bahia, and a small-scale manganese project in the state of São Paulo. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that represent the level of maturity of the exploration program in each project and indicate priority actions for reduction of the geological uncertainty. Therefore, the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix has shown potential to be a useful tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. As a risk indicator, it may contribute to promoting investment in small-scale mining and development for communities that depend on this activity around the world.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

The Robe River Iron Ore Project began in 1962 when Cliffs International acquired mining leases in Western Australia's Pilbara Region. Initial reserves were proven and bulk ore samples sent to the U.S.A. for pilot plant testwork. Cliffs Western Australian Mining Company Pty. Limited (30%) manages the project in joint venture with Mitsui Iron Ore Development Pty. Limited (30%), Robe River Limited (35%) and Cape Lambert Iron Associates (5%).

The Mount Royal Tunnel (MRT) is a 100-year-old railway tunnel located in Montreal, Canada. The tunnel is approximately 5 km long, 8.7 m wide and 5.5 m high, with a constant 0.6% grade. This existing tunnel will be used by the new Montreal light rail transit network, Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM). This requires the tunnel to be inspected, rehabilitated and made compliant to the recent safety standards. This paper presents the details of the structural inspection and rehabilitation of the tunnel along with the repair methods, addition of a center wall as well as the enlargement of the tunnel section.

A mineral deposit has been discovered and explored sufficiently to establish the presence of ore in ?commercially marketable quantities," This is the point at which exploration ends and development begins, Of course, when the presence of commercially marketable quantities of ore are thought to be present the deposit had to be evaluated before this decision could be reached. If, on the other hand, it was thought that commercially marketable quantities of ore are not present, either more exploration has to be done or the project must be abandoned. It is this decision with which this paper is concerned, more particularly, the influencing factors behind this decision. The final question to be answered is: what profit can my company reasonably expect to make by developing this property and putting it into production? The answer must be expressed as a figure for final profit per ton, money which can be used to pay dividends or to build up cash reserves. Some acquisition cost has probably been paid and the exploration cost incurred at the time of decision, (abandonment or development). In addition to returning these acquisition and exploration costs, the deposit must pay development, mining, milling, capital expense of new plants and equipment, taxes, and various other related costs.

Some aspects of kerosene penetration into tar sand have been investigated. The natural tar sand porosity was measured and used to analyze the performance of the hot water process. Subsequently, pretreatment experiments, using 20 kg tar sand samples (Asphalt Ridge and Whiterocks, Utah), and kerosene as a diluent were carried out at the expected summer temperature (26°C) and the expected winter temperature (-14°C). The natural tar sand porosity accessible by diluent has a crucial impact on the reduction of bitumen viscosity, and influences the penetration time required for successful bitumen separation from tar sand by hot water processing. Thus the tar sand porosity is an important variable which determines appropriate operating conditions. Experimental results indicate that diluent penetration into the Asphalt Ridge tar sand (high porosity) is almost complete after 30 min, whereas for the Whiterocks tar sand (low porosity) the penetration process is much slower, and still not complete after 15 hours regardless of the ambient temperature.

Many of the economic resources of Egypt have been recognized and exploited for thousands of years (e.g. gold and copper). Most of these minerals, particularly those from hard-rock sited deposits, are found in complex form along with other components while those present in sedimentary sequences are largely in simple compounds or as native elements. Recognition of their characteristic settings (structure, basin development, environment of formation etc.) is the main clue in predicting and locating their presence. The main economic minerals exploited in Egypt today come from sedimentary sequences and include sodium and potassium chlorides, gypsum, sulfur, and sedimentary iron ores. Large amounts of low grade sedimentary phosphates are known but are not of economic value at today's prices. Recent intensive investigation in the north-eastern Sinai (EI Arish) and along the southern coasts of the Gulf of Suez has revealed new and extensive sulfur and chloride deposits, and considerable oil and gas are now being exploited from closely related sediments. Tin is the only mineral that is produced from hard-rock sources, and gold and copper deposits are present but not of high enough grade to be economically viable. However, a significant part of Egypt has not yet been studied in enough detail to close the door on future discoveries. Another point of considerable geological interest is the presence of diverse, modern evaporitic settings, from which we may draw the analogs for many of the older gypsum, anhydrite, chloride and sulfur de-posits. In fact these analogs are so well displayed that both the Sinai and Gulf of Suez-Red Sea evaporites (Middle and Upper Miocene) can be readily compared with these modern deposits.
