The leaching of a complex matte in chlorine and chloride media was studied. The matte was prepared from manganese nodules by the reduction smelting-sulfidation route. From XRD analysis, the major phases of the matte were identified as CuFeS2, CuS2, (FeNi)9S8, (FeNi)S2, Ni9S8, Ni3S2, (CoFeNi)9S8 and Co metal. Investigated were the chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid-oxygen, ferric chloride, ferric chloride-oxygen, cupric chloride and cupric chloride-oxygen systems. The results are discussed in terms of reagent concentration, retention time, leach temperature and gas sparging rate. The chlorination process resulted >99% metal extraction efficiency within a short retention time and at atmospheric temperature. However, there were no preferential extractions of Cu, Ni and Co with respect to Fe. The cupric chloride-oxygen system produced leach liquors with the lowest Fe content and with a high base-metal extraction. Sulfide sulfur was converted to mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfate in all the studied systems.

Primary cementing is the process of placing cement in the annulus between the casing and the formations exposed to the wellbore. Portland cement was first used in 1903 in the Lopoc Field in California for well cementing. Since then, the major objective of primary cementing has always been to provide zonal isolation in oil, gas and water wells, i.e. to exclude fluid(s) in one zone from another zone in the well. To achieve this objective a hydraulic seal must be created between the casing and cement and between the cement and the formations, while at the same time preventing fluid channels in the cement sheath. This requirement makes primary cementing the most important operation performed on a well. Without complete isolation in the wellbore, the well may never reach its full producing potential. The industry knowledge on cements relies heavily on empirical data, but the chemistry, physics and structure of cement are not fully understood yet. The strength of concrete can be increased essentially by reducing its porosity through optimizing the size distribution of its components and filling the residual porosity of the hydrated cement phase with inorganic fillers. This approach has successfully utilized in different ways and several technologies for placing high performance oil and gas well cements have been developed over the last few decades. There are reasons to believe that the next source of improvement will lie in the fine-tuning of the hydrates themselves and of the different parameters that drive short (ionic?covalent bonding) and long (ionic correlation) interactions.

At San Manuel, AZ, Magma Metals Co. operates an Outokumpu flash furnace, four Peirce-Smith converters and two anode casting wheels that are supported by six anode vessels. Process gasses from the flash furnace and converters are treated in a two-train/ double-contact sulfuric acid plant. The plant captures 98% of the sulfur. A new flash furnace was commissioned in July 1988. It has since processed more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of sulfide concentrate without a major rebuild. The company has gained unique experience in the operation of the flash furnace at high oxygen enrichments with low off-gas dust loadings. New procedures have been developed to maintain secondary material generation at equilibrium and for maintaining metallurgical control of operating parameters. Process flow description At Magma's San Manuel plant, concentrates and other copper-bearing material are blended and conveyed from two separate areas of the plant to three 420 t (465 st) capacity wet charge bins located above the rotary dryer. Flash furnace silica flux is conveyed to a 227-t (250-st) capacity fine flux bin located adjacent to the wet charge bins. The concentrate and flux are blended in controlled amounts and fed into a 168-t/ h (185-stph) gas-fired rotary dryer. The wet charge enters the dryer at 8% moisture and is dried to 0.2% moisture. The dried charge is pneumatically conveyed to a 580-t/h (640-stph) dry charge bin located above the flash furnace. Flash furnace charge is drawn from the bin by two drag conveyors at a concentrate feed rate of 145 t/h (160 stph). The charge is mixed with enriched combustion air and injected into the furnace reaction shaft. In the reaction shaft, the charge is oxidized to form matte, slag and a rich SO, off-gas.

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

When plotted as head vs. volume, fan curves start high and decrease in head with increasing volume while mine head curves start low and rise with increasing volume. Their intersection is the system operating point. But wait a minute: Isn't head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn't fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves - pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values-and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at which the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation network. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

The Standley Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project in Colorado included the complete replacement of the outlet works. This required two 1.8m (6 ft) diameter microtunneled wet lake taps, 380m and 186m (1246 ft and 636 ft) long, a permanent valve shaft 12.2m(40 ft) wide and 32m (105 ft) deep, and a 3.5m (11.5 ft) diameter (962 foot long) outlet tunnel driven with a roadheader. The tunnels were driven in low-strength, expansive, and slickensided claystone. The paper addresses the site investigation, shaft construction, roadheader performance, shotcrete placement, tunnel convergence, long distance microtunneling, and wet lake taps.

Now that the price of sulfur has reached unexpected high levels, it is little wonder that sulfur from surface ores is again receiving attention. In most instances, it is advantageous for an ore to be at or near the surface. However, it is a distinct disadvantage for sulfur ore to be close to the surface because it precludes the use of the Frasch process. The Frasch process depends on the presence of at least 180 m of uniform overburden to allow pressure injection of superheated water into the sulfur-bearing formation to melt the sulfur. In the Frasch process, sulfur separates cleanly from the gangue underground and comes to the surface in a very pure form. Surface sulfur deposits, particularly those in the Western Hemisphere, exist largely due to volcanic activity, and sulfur separation from the gangue is a formidable technical problem. None of the surface deposits are large compared to some of the Frasch deposits, but at the present sulfur price, they are certainly of economic importance. From the turn of the century until 1975, the price of sulfur was for the most part $18-$28/t. However, with the price of sulfur now over $154/t, there are a variety of technical alternatives to consider for sulfur surface ore separation that may not have been economically attractive a few years ago.

There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. As is readily apparent, the reliability of the early-stage costs estimated for any mining project are critical to the viability of that project. An estimate too high might leave a potentially profitable deposit undeveloped or worse yet, available to a competitor. One too low might waste investment dollars in a project not yet economically ripe. There are two aspects critical to any estimate: 1. The cost data used to represent the values of the wages, salaries, supplies, and equipment. 2. The design used to determine the engineering parameters upon which the above estimated values are based. Given that all of the information contained in Mining Cost Service is provided by suppliers, equipment manufacturers and mine operators, one wonders why there is any question as to the reliability of cost estimates developed using this information. Given that it is all actual (as opposed to statistically derived) data, where do the problems with estimate reliability lie and what is the impact of the data on that reliability? The following presents a series of analyses designed to assess the reliability of the cost estimating process. Both the actual cost data and the engineering parameters upon which they are based are examined in an attempt to quantify and understand the importance of each. While several sources of cost information are available (Means, Richardson, Primedia?s Equipment Watch, and individual suppliers and manufacturers), the following rely solely on data contained in InfoMine USA, Inc?s, Mining Cost Service and in its Sherpa Mine Cost Estimating Software.

The SFR system utilizes a skimmer or extractor placed at or near the slurry-froth interface where there is a higher concentration of valuable mineral particles. With assistance of hydrocyclones, it is possible to classify the extracted particles into coarse and fine particle streams, that can be handled separately. It also allows the coarser solids to be separated from entrained low-value fines. The first test results with the SFR system significantly improved both coarse and fine particle recovery in a flotation cell. The SFR system was tested in the flotation circuit at a copper-moly concentrator, and the results show that the use of the skimmer has huge potential to increase the froth recovery (Rf) of both molybdenum and copper.

The worldwide budget for non fuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 27 percent in 2003 from the 2002 budget, according to the Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes after five years of declining spending for mineral exploration. For the first time in several years, all regional exploration budget estimates for 2003 as defined by MEG would increase from similar 2002 estimates. However, MEG included 193 more companies in its 2003 survey than in 2002. As with previous MEG survey reports, estimates reflect anticipated expenditures rather than actual dollars spent. Caution, therefore, must be taken when comparing 2002 and2003 estimates or evaluating the magnitude of regional changes from year to year. Sample variations and currency exchange rates may influence year-to-year variations of MEG data. Even so, it is likely that the general climate of improved metal prices in 2003 encouraged companies that had previously left the mineral exploration sector or reduced their exploration activity to once again focus on minerals exploration or increase exploration activity and budgets.

INTRODUCTION Prior to excavation in soil and rock, it is useful to know the subsurface structure. This is important information both for safety and for equipment scheduling reasons. It is useful to know whether parts of the subsurface might be potentially troublesome or of different character than is generally thought present. By using geophysical probing, it is possible to infer the location and size of these unusual regions. The ground structure is commonly estimated from core samples taken from boreholes. These cores give a detailed knowledge of the structure in the borehole. However, knowledge of the structure exterior to the borehole can only be extrapolated from core data. By using seismic and electromagnetic cross-borehole geophysical probing, remote probing can be used to sense the region exterior to boreholes. A recent advance has significantly improved the state-of-the-art for defining the ground structure between boreholes. This new procedure utilizes large amounts of data and provides a detailed picture of the subsurface. The data processing algorithms used are similar to those in medical imaging of the human body using x-rays, a science called x-ray tomography. This imaging of the ground is called geotomography, which is a shortened acronym for geophysical tomography. Several examples of geotomography applied to imaging ground structure are presented. Our approach has been to probe the ground with electromagnetic and seismic waves. We map the region of interest with signals transmitted between multiple source and receiver pairs lowered in boreholes on opposite sides of the region (Figure 1). Mineral property valuations to be used for Canadian securities regulatory purposes must comply with CIMVal1. The technical basis for a CIMVal report is the same as that required for a technical report that complies with NI 43-1012. NI 43-101 describes the content to be covered in a technical report, while also covering other requirements, one of which is that the report should be based on a property visit. CIMVal is based on five tenets that the valuator must follow: ? Materiality. ? Independence. ? Transparency. ? Competence. ? Reasonableness. Upon its adoption by CIM Council in 2003, it was hoped that the new CIMVal code would be adopted without change by the several Canadian regulators.

G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

This paper provides an overview of heap leaching technology with specific emphasis on chemical aspects. Hence, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, testing approaches and some fundamentals will be discussed. Finally, heap leach technology for different ore types (copper, nickel, uranium and gold) will be briefly compared.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

A 220-meter (m) segment of the Henderson/ ML King Combined Sewer Overflow(CSO) consists of two 1.8-meter-inside diameter (I.D.) pipe-jacked tunnels that pass beneath Interstate-5 and the BNSF and UPRR railroads. A seismic tomography survey was conducted to develop a 3-dimensional profile of the tunnel zone and better define potential obstructions. The tomography was conducted through three 11 cm high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes installed in a triangular pattern around the future tunnel alignments using horizontal directional drilling methods. The pipe-jacked tunnels have been successfully completed, thus permitting a comparison between the predicted obstructions and those actually encountered. The top HDPE tomography pipe was also used to monitor settlements with an experimental horizontal profiler above the advancing tunnels during construction and located two areas of ground loss beneath I-5 that were subsequently grouted.
