"Triboelectric separation of ilmenite ore based on the tribocharge differences between ilmenite and gangue minerals was conducted in this study. Triboelectric characteristics of ilmenite and its associated minerals were studied using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pentatricopeptide repeats (PPR), copper, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), stainless steel (SS), teflon and quartz glass (QG) tribochargers in lab triboelectric unit. Results demonstrated that the ilmenite particles tribocharged positively while gangue minerals tribocharged negatively using PVC as tribocharger. The particle size also has a significant effect on tribocharge, and the -0.125+0.074 mm is the optimal size fraction of triboelectric separation. Charge-mass ratios of minerals increase with the increases of tribocharging length, but the increasing rate gradually reduce. At 1.5 m tribocharging length, charge-mass ratios of ilmenite, quartz, feldspar and mica are up to 6.07 nC/g, -6.05 nC/g, -4.30 nC/g and -4.56 nC/g, respectively. Based on the triboelectric characteristics of each mineral, triboelectric separation of ilmenite was conducted, and the grade of ilmenite ore increased from 15.47% to 28.40%. INTRODUCTION As a transition metal titanium plays an irreplaceable role in medical, aerospace and materials due to its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. Pure titanium dioxide is an excellent white pigment and is widely applied in industries of paint and textile. Ilmenite is the main raw material for titanium industry. For the beneficiation of ilmenite, series methods have been proposed, such as the application of dry magnetic and wet gravity separations to separate the ilmenite from the zircon and rutile. Electrostatic separation is extensively used in the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands for the recovery of rutile, zircon and ilmenite while flotation is used to separate fine ilmenite (Mehdilo et al., 2014; Fan et al., 2014). Compared with flotation and gravity separation, electrostatic separation does not consume water, and native properties of materials will not be changed and energy consumption will be reduced (Wang et al., 2014). Thus, the wide application of electrostatic separation and other dry separation methods is a trend in separation and purification industry, especially in water-scarce areas."

"Air recovery, the fraction of air entering a flotation cell that overflows the cell lip, is linked to flotation performance, and it has been shown through industrial testwork that operating flotation cells at air rates that yield the Peak Air Recovery (PAR) results in high mineral recovery. For operating parameters over which flotation plants have little control, such as particle size, investigating the effect on the position of PAR, and the subsequent effect on flotation performance, proves more challenging. To this end, we have developed a bench scale flotation system that runs continuously and exhibits froth behavior similar to that found industrially, allowing the study of such parameters as particle size in addition to air rate. The bench scale system comprises a 4 l baffled cylindrical flotation cell, stirred by a Rushton impeller. The concentrate is recycled back into the pulp, allowing for continuous operation. Glass beads are used as solid particles, allowing a wide range of particle sizes to be tested, with TTAB as collector and MIBC as frother. The system allows operation at air rates typical of industrial flotation systems (1 -2 cms-1 superficial gas velocity), in addition to yielding a froth that coalesces and bursts and exhibits a peak in air recovery as cell air rate in increased. Solids and water recovery is also measured. The results show that air recovery is sensitive to changes in particle size. The intermediate size distribution showed a peak in air recovery (PAR) that corresponded with the maximum solids flowrate, as found industrially. It is shown that finer particles do result in more stable froths and higher recoveries, particularly at low air rates. The effect of particle size on the position of PAR is not yet unequivocally determined from these results."

"Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a typically synthetic depressant and may be used as a depressor of pyrite. The modification of polyacrylamide may improve its physicochemical properties and performances. Sulfonated polyacrylamides (SPAM) with different sulfonation degree (SD) were prepared using sodium sulfite as the sulfonating agent, and the interactions of SPAM and pyrite were investigated by the adsorption experiment in this work. The adsorption tests of SPAM on pyrite were conducted as a function of sulfonation degree, pH value and contact time. Pyrite and SPAM were constructed and optimized through MS software. The interaction mechanisms of sulfonated polyacrylamide and pyrite were simulated by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the adsorption capacities of SPAM at neutral and weak alkaline conditions are higher than that at acidic and strong basic conditions. The high sulfonation degree favors the adsorption of SPAM on pyrite surface. The adsorption process can be described best by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the adsorption of sulfonated polyacrylamide on pyrite is better than that of polyacrylamide. Sulfonated polyacrylamide can be used as a potential depressant of pyrite with the main interacting mechanism of hydrogenbond force.INTRODUCTIONPyrite is the most abundant sulfide mineral and often associated with valuable minerals such as galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite, gold, diaspore as well as coal (Forrest et al., 2001; Jaiswal et al., 2015; Maier and Dobiáš, 1997; Qiu et al., 2017; Xin and Liye, 2010). Froth flotation is the most popular method to remove pyrite from valuable minerals. Pyrite could be floated as the flotation concentrate either by its hydrophobicity or activation by metal ions (Chandra and Gerson, 2009). What is more, pyrite could be seperated as flotation tailing by adding highly selective depressants including inorganic and organic modifiers. Polysaccharides polymers and lignosulfonate-based biopolymers are common natural organic depressants (Deng et al., 2017; Mu et al., 2016). While the synthetic organic products have proved to be particularly versatile in terms of molecule tailing capability and controlled structures (Boulton et al., 2001a; Raffa et al., 2015)."

Coal sorting with an x-ray-transmission (XRT) sensor has experienced a lot of development since first described by Jekinson et.al. in 1974. Powerful computers and increasingly sensitive X-ray scintillation counters enabled the development of high-performance sensor-based sorting machines. The first industrial installation of a belt-type XRT-sorting for coal is in operation since 2004. It is upgrading high quality coal from 1% ash to 0.7% ash for cathode production. In comparison to the high quality coal which is treated with a belt-type sorter, the chute type sorter has been successfully optimized for high volume coal treatment of lower quality coals. This project was funded by the German Environmental Fund (Project Nr.244444). In cooperation with the RWTH Aachen University and Isambane Processing, CommodasUltrasort(now Tomra Sorting Solutions) conducted extensive pilot test work under production conditions in 2010 for the destoning of power station coal at Arnot Power Station in South Africa. The experience gained during this pilot test phase led to an optimized, redesigned PRO Secondary XRT Chute sorter which is now in operation at a South African coal mine. This flexible semi-mobile modular destoning plant is treating a size range of -120 mm +30 mm at a throughput of 150 tph. The implementation of this plant not only reduces the ash content, abrasiveness index and sulfur content significantly, but also reduces royalties, water treatment and transport costs.

"Gold has been a material in high demand since the dawn of humanity. After hundreds of years of exploitation, the increasingly search for gold occurs in lower grade deposits with greater extraction difficulty. Therefore, for maximum efficiency, deep knowledge of the characteristics of these minerals and their associations is crucial, which is acquired through an accurate and rigorous routine of process mineralogy and batch extraction tests. The industrial gold process extraction occurs by gravity concentration, sulphides flotation and cyanidation. For gravity concentration, it is fundamental to establish the proportion of free or coarse gold grains and its association to heavy minerals; regarding flotation, the most relevant data are the proportion of gold associated to sulphides and their liberation by the surface area; for cyanidation, it is crucial to evaluate gold accessibility and the kinetics of leaching. Thus, the characterization of gold associations and liberation is vital to establish the plant design, to optimize operating plants and to reduce gold losses. Our aim is the characterization of gold occurrence in low-grade Brazilian deposits with complex mineralogical assemblages to support processing flowchart definition and to predict metallurgical recoveries. Gold distribution in light and heavy minerals was evaluated by heavy liquid separation and the occurrence of gold in free or locked particles was carried out on heavy products by SEM-based automated image analysis using the MLA system. All the products of heavy liquid separation were cyanidated in head samples with different milling conditions to evaluate the reaction kinetics and maximum recovery."

"Biopolymers, produced from cellulosic biomass, have promising prospects of application as depressants in mineral processing. In this study, three different types of biopolymers (i.e., DP-1775, DP-1777 and DP-1778) were used to study the effect of polymer structure on flotation of un-activated pyrite, copper activated pyrite and chalcopyrite. It was found that the depressing effect of DP-1775 and DP-1778 was much stronger than that of DP-1777, and pyrite was depressed to a greater content than chalcopyrite with the same biopolymer at the same dosage. The biopolymer concentration played a vital role in determining the degree of depression. For each biopolymer, the higher the concentration, the greater the minerals were depressed. The mechanism underpinning the depressing effect of these biopolymers was explored in this paper. The concentration of biopolymers could determine the properties of the adsorption layer and the confirmation of biopolymer chains on mineral surfaces. The biopolymer molecules may aggregate when polymer concentration was over a critical value. Molecular weight and functional groups of biopolymers were the key factors characterizing the depressing capability of different biopolymers. Differences between the tested biopolymers and features of the adsorbed layer might account for the observed trends in ability to depress pyrite and chalcopyrite flotation. The greater depressing effect of biopolymers on pyrite over chalcopyrite might result from the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on pyrite over chalcopyrite."

In this study, the effect of adaptation of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena with respect to the selective flotation of sphalerite from the sphalerite-galena synthetic mixture has been examined. The changes in the surface charge of the mineral and the bacterium, cell wall components and the profiles of secreted proteins are discussed. The flotation recovery of galena increases with the increase in the adaptation cycle of B.subtilis to sphalerite and galena, while the flotation recovery of sphalerite is independent of the adaptation cycle with either mineral. From the gel electrophoresis analysis, the protein profile for the unadapted and adapted cells is found to differ distinctly and this may be attributed to varying molecular weight fractions arising from different growth conditions. Electrokinetic measurements showed shifts in the iso-electric points of not only B.subtilis but also of the chosen minerals after adaptation. Additionally, the zeta potential of B.subtilis is found to become less negative after bacterial adaptation to the chosen sulfide minerals, while it showed an increase in the magnitude of surface negative charge after various enzymatic treatments. The change in the surface morphology and cell wall components such as phosphate, uronic acid and acetylated sugars of the bacterial species during adaptation to sphalerite and galena has been assessed. Selective flotation tests on a synthetic mixture of galena and sphalerite confirm that sphalerite can be preferentially floated from galena in the presence of the insoluble fraction of lysed B.subtilis cells initially adapted to sphalerite, with a high selectivity index. Possibilities of the analysis of potential energy of bubble-particle interaction on the basis of extended DLVO theory are discussed. Interaction energies of mineral silica, coal and pyrite particles with contact angles from 20 to 100 degrees and air bubbles in neutral and alkaline solutions are analyzed. It is shown that for hydrophilic silica, the formation of particle-bubble complexes (either in the area of primary or secondary potential minima) is impossible due to the high potential barriers (from 6000 to 140000 kT)and low values of the attraction force. There is shown that for coal and pyrite particles the energy of interaction vs. particle-bubble distance strongly depends on pH value. Improvement of floatability of minerals by the hydrophobization of their surface by collectors leads to the eliminating of potential barriers and the formation of the stable complexes of minerals and air bubbles in the area of primary potential minimum. In addition, due to hydrophobization of coal and pyrite changing pH has practically no influence on the energy of interaction. There are discussed results of the numerical calculations of normalized interaction forces in particle-bubble systems on the nanometer distances for pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite at contact angles up to 85° in comparison with the experimental data. The values of adhesion force for hydrophobized particles of coal and pyrite to air bubbles are about 10-5 N, that indicates stability of the formed flotation complexes. Examples of using the long-range and high-energy effect of hydrophobic interactions for improving minerals floatability are discussed. There are illustrated minerals wettability changes induced by the adsorption of thiol collector and hydrophobic polymer. Possibilities of flocculation and flotation of mineral slimes due the polymer-collector hydrophobic interactions are shown. In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, has been investigated. We formed two bubbles of equal size and forced them to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. We present data of coalescence frequency and time, as well as images of the coalescence events.

"Multimetal gold-antimony ores are complexed processing products, since they are characterized by veindisseminatedsulfide mineralization with fine-dispersed submicroscopic gold, low content and uneven distribution ofAu, which is concentrated together with iron sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite). Such ores are classified asrefractory ones and characterized by low gold recovery rates during cyanation. A particular feature of gold-antimonydeposits is the presence of antimony in industrial concentrations therein, along with gold that significantly increasesthe value of these deposits. The main antimony mineral is antimony sulfide - antimonite (stibnite). Gold-antimonyores undergo flotation concentration with producing collective gold-containing concentrates or gold sulfide andantimony concentrates. The purpose of the work is an experimental study of the flotation separation mechanism ofsulfide minerals of copper, antimony and arsenic using tannin-containing modifiers during processing of multimetalgold-bearing ores. During the research it was established that for the selective separation of antimony and arsenicsulfide minerals into concentrates of different kinds, it is possible to use vegetable reagents capable to be selectivelyadsorbed on the arsenopyrite surface. Using the laser KEYENCE VK-9700 and electronic LEO-1420 VP INCA-350microscopy methods, it has been established that the film of a vegetable modifier was not washed off with water andfixed firmly enough on the surface of the polished sections of arsenopyrite. In the X-ray spectrum there are C and Obands related to the reagent structure. The vegetative reagent is fixed both on the pre-adsorbed phase of the collectorand on the areas free from the collector. On the polished sections of antimonite before and after a contact with thetannin solution, only partial adsorbed tannin phases are detected, which disappear as a result of subsequent washingwith water.The reported study was funded by RFBR according to the research project ? 16-05-00646 ?."

"Grinding has a significant economic impact on ore dressing/processing, therefore the sizing of mills has an outstanding role.In most cases, the sizing of dry or wet mills for ore processing is primarily based on the determination of the Bond grindability index, using the Bond-Kjos-Rowland relations. In several cases, grinding takes place under conditions different from these and the grinding conditions have a great influence on the post-grinding process. This is particularly true for the grinding of bauxites where grinding takes place in alkali, often in higher temperature (up to 100 ºC) in alkali Liquor. So it is necessary to develop a testing method providing a reliable grindability index even under these special circumstances (grinding in alkalis medium at different temperatures) and allowing a more precise mill sizing. The new heated mill is suitable to determine the grindability index under temperature-controlled circumstances, in liquids with different temperatures (water, alkali). This paper presents in detail the equipment, the conditions (parameters) of the testing process for wet and alkaline grinding, the measuring results and the conclusions."

We experimented with slurry which from one of coal preparation plant in Guizhou province and made researches on double hump gradation, one of critical factor of gradation technology, which can influence pulping character in the process of making coal water mixture (CWM). The purpose for it is to find the best particle gradation which can meet the requirements in concentration, viscosity, and stability for CWM. The final result is that the concentration, viscosity, stability of CWM can meet the requirement for industrial use while the rate of fine particle in the slurry is 70%~75% and the maximum concentration of 62%.

A large amount of tailings in concentrators bring a series of problems to the environment and society. It is significant to reclaim the huge tailings and reuse them in industries in order to utilize mineral resources adequately. Primarily Lead-Zinc tailings with a certain quality of clay and feldspar were used to produce ceramic tiles by sintering method under specific technical conditions. By testing the properties of the ceramic tiles, it was shown that the amount of Lead-Zinc tailing used in the tiles was 60%~70%, and the mechanics properties were good. The optimum proportion parameters were Lead-Zinc tailing 60%, clay 35%, feldspar 5%, and the maximum flexural strength of tiles was up to 38.2MPa when it was sintered at 1090? for 30min. Its flexural strength, water absorption and thermal shock resistance reached the State Standard of GB/T4100.4. The product is suitable to be used in pavements and paths of parks.

Molybdenite flotation is strongly depressed at pH higher than 9.5 in the flotation of Cu-Mo ores in sea water. Chemically sea water contains mainly Na+ and Cl- ions, but also some secondary ions, such as SO42-, Mg2+; Ca2+, HCO3-; etc., which are not necessarily indifferent for the flotation of molybdenite. The natural floatability of molybdenite in sea water and in NaCl solutions containing different secondary ions is investigated by micro-flotation tests. The tests indicate that the floatability of molybdenite in alkaline media in 0.6 M NaCl solutions is not affected by the presence of anions, such as, SO42- and HCO3-, at concentrations similar to those occurring in sea water. However, a strong depression of molybdenite at pH ranging from 9.5-10.0, is produced by the alkaline earth metal cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions), dissolved in distilled water or in 0.6M NaCl solutions. It was found that effect of Mg2+ions is significantly stronger than Ca2+ ions. Effect of both ions is attributed to hydrolysis and adsorption of MOH+ hydroxy-complexes. This is followed by subsequent precipitation of hydrophilic colloidal hydroxides at the molybdenite/solution interface, and in bulk solution.

Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. "The paper covers the design and implementation of an industrial dense medium cyclone plant for carbonaceous iron ore, the proving of efficiency as well as the development of a predictive model for plant control. The VA Erzberg GmbH mines about 12 Mio.t of carbonaceous rock ore at the “Steirische Erzberg”. Due to increased demand of the Austrian steel plants, the production of ore concentrate was raised by 30 % up to 3.0 Mio t/a during the last 5 years. One of the projects to realize the increase in capacity at improved concentrate quality was the implementation of a dense medium cyclone plant for the fine size fraction – 8 +1 mm replacing the former dry permanent magnetic drum separators. By physical separation the siderite variety “spateisenstein” (42% Fe) of a density of 3,8 g/cm³ is separated from ankerite (10 – 17% Fe), the second iron bearing carbonate with a density of 3,2 g/cm³, dolomite, calcite and silicate bearing schists. The feasibility of the process was proven by the test results obtained from a test rig, that was constructed and operated in close cooperation between the Chair of Mineral Processing, Montanuniversitaet Leoben and VA Erzberg GmbH. The density separation surpassed the efficiency of magnetic separation clearly shown by •- values. The plant performance tests (capacity 120 t/h) verify the cut densities defined by Tromp T50 -values and the assigned efficiency found in the pilot tests at varied settings of media density, pressure drop, cone angle and apex diameter. The test rig as well as the final process will be presented. In order to create a tool to predict the performance of the DMS in the centrifugal field at various settings for varying feed composition the experimental results from size and density testing are analyzed in a modified way to obtain physically justified, smooth approximations for the performance curves. Models developed on coal washing plants are checked for their validity at increased densities."

Batch wise adsorption tests for platinum (Pt) on the surface of activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8 BET surface area 1100 mg/g) were carried out in mixed chloride solution. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the adsorption performance of amine-treated activated carbons (AACs) and native activated carbons (NACs) in terms of adsorption capacity and selectivity. The effect of pH and temperature on adsorption capacity and selectivity was established. The amine- treated ACs were prepared by anchoring the amino groups (butyl amines) on the surface of AC pellets in aqueous media and the UV-Vis was used to determine the amount of amine sequestered from solution by ACs. The dosage of butyl amine on the surface of ACs averaged 0.15 g/g, carbon. The adsorption mechanism was described by the ionization and complexation model whereby interaction between the protonated AAC surface and the anionic chlorocomplex ions (PtCl5 [H2O]-, PtCl62-) proceeded by either electrostatic attraction or/and by covalent bonding [(NH3)2PtCl6 or (CH2COO)2PtCl6]. By comparison, the adsorption capacities of Pt on amine-treated ACs and native ACs were 53.8 mg/g and 33.03 mg/g, respectively which highlight the benefits of anchoring functional molecules on ACs. The selectivity of AACs was influenced by solution pH. Pt adsorbed selectively on the surface of amine-treated ACs at pH<1.5. The highest separation factor that was recoded pertained to Pt and Fe species (ßPt/Fe = 90) then followed by Pt and Ni species (ßPt/Ni = 30) or Pt and Cu species (ßPt/Cu = 15). The lowest separation factor was recorded for Pt and Cr ions (ßPt/N= 5). Adsorption kinetics of Pt on amine-treated AC surfaces, according to the first and second order reactions, were investigated and results showed that rates were in the order 10= 5). -4 min-1 and 102 g?min/mg, respectively. The pseudo 1st order kinetics predicted the adsorption capacity of 51.81 mg/g which was almost similar to the experimental value (53.8 mg/g) while the second order rate equation predicted Pt adsorption capacity of 40.1 mg/g. Both The Langmuir and Toth isotherm fitted the Pt adsorption at pH < 1.0. The Freundlich isotherm tended to underestimate the adsorption capacity of AACs.

"The Upper Group 2 (UG2) reef in the Bushveld Complex in South Africa hosts an estimated 40% of the world’s Platinum Group Metal (PGM) resources. The processing of this ore via flotation poses two particular challenges: limiting the levels of chromite in the concentrate to reduce downstream smelting problems, and enhancing the recovery of ultrafine (typically -10 micron), liberated PGMs. Conventional ways of suppressing the entrained chromite, such as froth washing, is not effective in PGM operations, which are dominated by mechanical cells. The recovery of fine particles is hampered by low collision efficiencies with air bubbles, as well as oxidised surface layers especially in tailings operations. This paper documents the results of laboratory tests on a run-of-mine PGM UG2 ore, investigating the application of a pneumo-mechanical column (PMC) and its effect on PGM flotation and its selectivity with regard to chromite. A key feature of the device is the stage-wise release of aerated slurry from an agitated downcomer, thus creating conditions where the superficial velocity profiles of air and slurry change axially within the separation zone. This aids segregation of the silicates and chromite-rich fractions in the separation zone, concentrating the latter towards the bottom of the column and minimising its entrainment into the concentrate. Comparison of the performance of the PMC to that of mechanical laboratory cells under equivalent operating conditions showed improved PGM flotation kinetics and recovery. This was accompanied by a decrease in gangue recovery compared to the mechanical cells by more than 40%, thus doubling the final rougher concentrate grade from 50 to 100 g/t. Significantly, whilst the overall Cr2O3 recovery was reduced by more than 60%, the selectivity (PGM recovery vs Cr2O3 grade in the concentrate) was doubled.INTRODUCTIONThe Bushveld complex in the northern part of South Africa hosts the world’s largest reserves of Platinum Group Metals (PGMs), representing approximately 40% of the total PGE. It is characterised by three main PGM bearing reefs, namely Merensky, Upper Group 2 (UG2) and the Platreef. The Merensky and Platreef are dominated by silicates in the form of pyroxenites, and carry economically recoverable amounts of copper and nickel, in the form of chalcopyrite and pentlandite. The UG2 on the other hand is a chromitite ore with chromite as (ideally, FeO.Cr2O3) the most abundant gangue, often constituting more than 70% by mass with a PGM grade of around 4.5 g/t. Other key gangue minerals are pyroxene, feldspar and talc. The PGEs occur in a wide variety of minerals, with platinum and palladium sulphides typically accounting for about half of the total. Base metal sulphides such as chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite occur in only very minor amounts, accounting mostly for less than 0.1% by mass."

"Water shortage becomes a major challenge in mining industry. The best example is Chile where the Chilean authorities declared a state of emergency in 2012. Depletion of high grade ore-bodies necessitates the use of low grade ores. If the demand for metals remains constant, more low-grade ores need to be mined to produce the same tonnages of metals. This increases the water demand in mining industry. Mining industry competes with other industries such as agriculture and manufacturing. Agriculture and manufacturing consume 1500 and 2300 billion m3 water respectively. The global use is 4500 billion m3 while the mining uses 80 billion m3 of water per annum.To tackle the water challenges in mining industry and also avoid competing with other users for fresh water, many efforts have been made, including using lower quality waters to reduce the fresh water consumption in ore processing. Saline water or hyper saline water from seas or the ground is accessible; however the cost of desalination is remarkable. Desalination plants and associated pipelines and pumps capital cost can easily exceed $ 500 million. Saline water will certainly increase the operating costs due to high wear rate of mechanical equipment but at current situation of mining industry spending all this money upfront does not look attractive. Desalination leaves salt on land at mine site which may create environmental issues.Dry processing can be a solution for water shortage in mineral processing. Wet processes dispose tailings on land with little or no agricultural productivity. It also may contaminate surface and ground water and generate dust. This paper reviews the water consumption by various mineral commodities, discuss briefly about recent of application of salt water in mineral processes and finally discuss about dry processes as alternative solution for water shortage in mining industry."

"The paper presents the results of study of the sorption and flotation properties of the reagents of plant origin - tannin and natural extracts of the oak bark and stems of plants, with a view to their application as a low-cost environmentally friendly modifiers of iron sulfide flotation for the recovery of minerals containing precious metals. The technique of preparation of plant extracts with a fixed content of extractable tannins has been developed.The mechanism of flotation reaction of tannin extracts has been identified as based on their adsorption on the surface of pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite to form strong complexes with iron (III) at concentrations below micelle concentration. It has been found that adsorption of plant extracts occurs without displacement of primarily adsorbed xanthate, and preliminary adsorption of xanthate did not preclude fixation of tannin on the mineral surface.It has been shown that plant extracts having hydrophilizing properties at low concentrations could be applied as selective depressants for pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite in a weakly acidic, neutral or weakly alkaline medium. The use of plant modifiers could help to increase the quality of gold- and platinumcontaining concentrates and reduce the ecological impact on the environment."
