Abstract - To exploit an ore deposit without unduly impacting the environment is a challenge that can only be met by the concerted efforts of traditionally independent teams working on a mining project. Not only is detailed geology required of geologists to help mine engineers to develop a mine plan that assures generation of the least possible amount of mine waste, but metallurgists also have to select the most environmentally friendly mineral processing schemes, and communicate with environmental engineers with regard to complications that process chemicals may pose on proper mine waste management. Traditional ore deposit models typically emphasize the geological and mineralogical aspects of ore genesis to facilitate exploration for similar deposits. Recent research has shown that potential environmental liabilities such as acid mine drainage and metal leaching can readily be predicted according to deposit types. The choice of mining methods, mineral processing schemes, and decommissioning options are also largely dictated by the composition and setting of an orebody to be mined. Integrating such related information into traditional ore deposit descriptions would lead to the development of comprehensive environmental ore deposit models. The latter would facilitate communication among staff of the varied components of a mine project and aid with the selection of a combination of methods and strategies that would assure minimum environmental risks and impacts, reduce the overall project cost, and enhance sustainable development.

"Exploration properties form a continuum from grass roots to those with favourable geology, geochemical and/or geophysical anomalies, mineralization, showings (prospects), and finally to those with defined mineral deposits. Often properties exhibit a composite of these categories.The most problematic to value are properties or deposits that are not economically exploitable at the time of the valuation, due to a lack of exploration, insufficient grade or tonnage, poor mining conditions, or the imposition of socioeconomic, environmental, or legal constraints.Various acceptable methods of valuing the range of all such mineral properties or deposits are reviewed. "The information that has accumulated regarding the geology of the McIntyre mine is the result of work by several geologists and, as might be anticipated, their conclusions have varied. The writer has been at the mine only a few years and due to wartime conditions has not been able to study and review the mine's geology as thoroughly as his predecessors. Where the writer's conclusions differ from those of previous authors, it should be noted that he has been unable to re-map all the workings in which flow contacts are exposed, but has endeavoured to describe the structure as indicated by the evidence he has been able to observe. He wishes to thank H. G. Skavlem and H. S. Robinson for their constructive criticism of this paper, and McIntyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for permission to present it. A list of references is appended.The McIntyre mine is in the central part of the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. It includes the ""bed of Pearl lake, twenty-two claims to the north of the lake, and the Platt Vet lot to the southeast. It is bordered on the west by the Hollinger and on the east by the Coniaurum property. The chief ore-bearing veins on the upper levels lie very close to the north shore of the lake, but some occur under the lake, and others of lesser importance are found to the southeast. The most important veins are Nos. 3, 5, 7, 10, and 25. Some of the veins extend into the Hollinger. on the west and others cross the east boundary into the Coniaurum. The total production since the commencement of milling in 1912 to the end of March 1947 has been $168,448,218 in gold and silver from the milling of 17,690,963 tons of ore."

La Mine Louvicourt est une mine hautement mécanisée exploitant un gisement polymétallique avec des chantiers transversaux minés et remblayés selon une séquence primaire-secondaire. Dans certaines parties du gisement, il n'y avait qu'un accès à la coupe inférieure, car il n'était pas rentable d'avoir aussi un accès par coupe supérieure. Le minerai situé au-dessus des chantiers avec trous ascendants était considéré comme ressource non rentable par minage mécanisé. L'option de miner ces ressources avec des sous-niveaux avec accès par monterie alimak et forage long-trous de petit diamètre fût donc étudiée et démontra une rentabilité intéressante, particulièrement en considérant les tonnes ainsi minées comme tonnage supplémentaire au tonnage planifié. Dans ces chantiers, les détonateurs électroniques ont été très utiles et de plus, les coûts d'explosifs ont étés réduits considérablement par l'utilisation d'émulsion pompée en vrac.

"The development and operation of the milling circuits treating the different Selbaie orebodies are discussed in this paper. The project is reviewed from metallurgical evaluation through construction to present operating status. The current flowsheets are described, with discussion of some unusual features.IntroductionThe Selbaie concentrator commenced initial production in August 1981, treating underground B zone copper ore in a single 1500 t/d circuit. Throughput was increased to 1650 t/d in 1985. The mill was expanded in 1986 to treat ore from the A-I zone open pit; an independent circuit was added to selectively treat 5000 t/d of copper-zinc ore. Current total mill throughput through both circuits averages 7200 t/d with the production of approximately 270 t/d of copper concentrate and 230 t/d of zinc concentrate.This paper describes the stages involved in bringing the project from initial laboratory testing to its current status as one of the most important producers of silver, copper and zinc in Quebec and a major employer in the region."

In the spring of 2009, Suncor Energy Inc. technical personnel saw an opportunity to improve planning 0and mining of overburden material in order to address aggressive construction goals and increased mining complexity. By tying together current and historical equipment performance, geological model information, and material observation in the field new operating elevations for the shovels were developed. At the same time, methodology of recording and reporting overburden movement through the Modular Mining DISPATCH system was changed. The result of this first stage of improvements was an increase in construction-grade material available at the face. The personnel involved realized that other opportunities were available to build on the initial successes and establish processes that would stand up to attrition and experience levels. A cross-functional technical team was assembled to identify ways of further improving workflows around overburden mining. Some of the opportunities realized include greater alignment between planning, reporting and operations as well as development of reporting tools that help steward Mine Operations to the plan. All of which have resulted in Suncor meeting or beating its forecast overburden targets. The cross-functional technical team continues to seek out new and better ways of doing business so Suncor can continue to deliver on its commitment of outstanding performance and results.

Gypsum in Manitoba is quarried from the Jurassic Amaranth Formation a1 Gypsumville and Harcus; it has been mined near Amaranth and Silver Plains. At Gypsumville, gypsum is carbonate- free but has thin clay laminae between gypsum layers; the rock is folded in places, and some anhydrite is present. At Harcus, gypsum contains scattered dolomite, both as patches in a penemosaic pattern and as thin layers; small chalcedonic concretions also can be found. The quarry at Harcus was opened late in 1978 and currently produces about 100,000 tonnes annually. The two inactive mines near Amaranth operated from 1932 lo 1963 and from 1967 to 1970, and contain a central anhydrite layer. The mine near Silver Plains was flooded from an underlying artesian aquifer in 1975 and has not been reopened. Manitoba gypsum is used in cemem plants in Mani1oba and Saskatchewan and in wallboard plants in the three Prairie Provinces.

Further increase in gas turbine engine temperature necessitates continuous development and advancement to thermal barrier coatings. While tremendous effort has been devoted to developing new thermal barrier coating materials and processing methods in order to decrease the thermal conductivity, limited attention has been paid to radiative thermal transport through coatings. It is the purpose of this study to develop a new layered coating structure that can be used to effectively reduce the both radiative thermal transport as well as thermal conductivity, and to demonstrate the mechanism and effectiveness of the proposed multilayered structure. Mathematical modeling based on the multilayer quarterwave stack and simulation results are presented.

Samples of feed and product from a closed grinding circuit treating a heterogeneous lead-zinc ore were taken. The feed was subjected to laboratory batch grinding in a rod and ball mill with the objective of simulating the closed-circuit size distribution. It was concluded that the batch rod mill can closely simulate this product if only the over-all size is considered, but mineral-by-mineral large differences occur. If, as is suspected, the mineral sizes are the important factor in flotation, the differences could lead to problems in interpreting flotation results. An example of mineral recovery as a function of size is described to illustrate the potential problems.

The assimilation and the exothermic behavior of Zn-Zr metallic powder compacts into molten aluminum was studied by measuring simultaneously the temperatures inside at the centerline of the compact, at its surface, and inside the molten aluminum bath, as well as the net downward force acting on the compact. In addition, the exothermic behavior of these compacts was also investigated in an argon protected atmosphere. The temperature rise inside the compact increases significantly with the mass ratio of zirconium in the compact and to a lesser degree with the aluminum bath temperature. Experimental results on the recovery of these compacts in molten aluminum will also be presented.

"This study describes the strain behavior in vertical shaft lining (VSL) embedded in thick soil deposits and its application in assessment of concrete deterioration. The observed strain in VSL continuously decreased companied by a sinusoidal fluctuation due to the influences derived from negative skin friction (NSF) and temperature. The increase in strain increment between peak and trough at each year and compressive strain level as the servicing time continued and VSL depth increased implies that the concrete strength was attenuated, and this attenuation was significantly dependent on the existing compressive strain level in VSL. The reliability of the proposed approach was validated by Schmidt Hammer Technique (SHT) – based concrete strength, and is applicable in concrete assessment and then fracturing prediction of VLSs in thick soil deposits.Concrete strength, Field monitoring, Strain behavior, Vertical shaft liningINTRODUCTIONOver 100 VSLs in Southeastern China subjected to an unpredictable fracturing as shown in Figure1, and there are over 1,000 VSLs embedded in thick alluvium su?ering from challenges of damaging and potential fracturing (Cheng, Yang, Zhou, Li, & Hu, 1993; Zhou, Cui, Lv, Huang, & Chen, 1999; Li & Li,2005). Therefore, a reliable assessment of these VSLs is significant to the normal servicing of mine shafts and the recycle of underground space when these mine shafts were closed.The continuous increasing of NSF induced by the drainage of water–saturated deposits well interpreted such extensive fracturing phenomenon, and it is universally regarded as the governing indicator to determine the VSL stabilization (Cheng et al., 1993; Zhou et al., 1999). Based on this recognition, the fracturing prediction and VSL strengthening according to the field monitoring on hydrogeological characteristics, servicing environments, and mechanical behaviors of VSL were carried out (Zhao, Zhou, Zhong, Zhu, & Liang, 2009; Liang et al., 2009; Xie, Lv, & Wu, 2014). As known, the compressive strain level in VSL and the in–situ strength of VSL concrete were the main factors to perform such fracturing prediction. However, the existing studies in literatures were limited to the strain accumulating or releasing behaviors (Zhao, Zhou, Zhao, Kuang, & Hu, 2017), and lack of considering the VSL concrete strength and its attenuation. In this reported study, the in–situ monitoring data on the strain in typical VSLs and the VSL elevations between 2004 and 2014 were initially analyzed. Then, an observed strain behaviors–based approach was developed to quantitatively evaluate the VSL concrete deterioration."

ABSTRACT: In most cases, a refractory repair involves dealing with used refractory linings above shoulder height, defining these as overhead refractories. This paper details a method of personnel protection involving a low-pressure inflatable balloon system, installed to prevent the dislodgement and freefall of in-situ refractories. This system has been successfully applied to numerous types of vessels in the process industries in the last three to four years. This paper, prepared for the CIM Conference of Metallurgists held in Vancouver, British Columbia in October 2010, outlines details of the system and gives examples of successful applications.

An optimization process is described that can be systematically applied by mine planners to produce life-of-mine schedules aligned with their strategic targets, while maximizing the net present value of the mining operation. The software tool employed uses heuristics and an evolutionary algorithm to generate life-of-mine schedules of production and development activities. Generating such schedules is typically a very difficult task due to the large number of operational constraints that must be respected, and the vast number of alternative schedules; as a result the value of the mining operation can be compromised. With an expansion at Newmont?s Leeville mine in Nevada, the mine planners were given the task of producing feasible life-of-mine schedules with significantly increased production rates. Their initial efforts indicated that it would be a considerable challenge to generate such schedules in a timely manner. By systematically applying the proposed optimization process, the mine planners were able to generate optimized life-of-mine schedules with the desired production rate.

"Interest in the use of particle-based ore sorting has increased significantly with recent advances in sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. Particle-based ore sorting has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from mines while delivering higher grades to the mill, as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore sorting and associated reductions in energy, water, and consumables utilization. However, layout significantly affects the installed cost of a processing plant, and the impacts on layout from fitting an ore sorting circuit into the plant plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines processing plant layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects, including additional crushing and screening requirements, transport of rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements), and effects on the processing plant footprint. ¦ KEYWORDS Cold climates, Ore sorting, Plant layout RÉSUMÉ L’intérêt porté à l’utilisation du tri granulométrique du minerai a considérablement augmenté au vu des récents progrès réalisés en matière de technologies de triage et des capacités supérieures par unité. Le tri granulométrique du minerai offre une plus-value intéressante en termes de traitement du minerai à plus faible teneur extrait des mines ; il permet par ailleurs l’acheminement vers le concentrateur de minerai à plus haute teneur et la revalorisation des stériles dans le minerai. On met généralement l’accent sur la susceptibilité du minerai au triage et sur les réductions connexes en termes d’utilisation de l’énergie, de l’eau et de biens consommables. Cependant, l’aménagement physique de l’équipement a une incidence non négligeable sur le coût installé d’une usine de concentration, et les répercussions sur l’aménagement de l’installation d’un circuit de triage du minerai dans l’usine doivent être soigneusement examinées. Ceramic fibers were classified as a category 2 carcinogen by The European U legislation. Therefore we developed non-fibrous insulating castable which utilizes n porous aggregate, which is composed of Calciumhexaluminate. Although at beginning we applied alumina cement as binder for non-fibrous insulating castable, kind of formulation had a poor resistance to spalling. We developed non-fibrous insulating castable without alumina cement. This solved a problem which pre\ formulation had a poor resistance of spalling. We applied a new non-fibrous insub castable for reheat furnace in steelworks, then we could achieve good result which condition equivalent to ceramic fiber insulating castable.

Elemental sulphur occurs as aformational sedimentary deposit in Upper Devonian Wabamun evaporites near Coronation, Alberta. The deposit developed in a stratigraphic jacies-change lrap; it is assumed that petroleum reacted with anhydrite to form sulphur, calcite, hydrogen sulphide and other reaction products. The deposit contains about 362,800 tonnes of sulphur and lies at a depth of 1200 m. The Coronation deposit is expected to be geologically typical of such other native sulphur deposits as may be found in Wabamun Group sediments. Widespread sour gas sulphur production f rom the Wabamun suggests the possibility that additional native sulphur deposits will ·be found.

"Zonation patterns are welt developed in the mafic metavolcanic rocks that host epigenetic quartz-carbonate-gold vein mineralization at the Hollinger-McIntyre deposit. Carbonate alteration assemblages are strongly zoned about mineralization. Proceeding inward from background greenschist facies rocks to alteration envelopes enclosing individual veins, the following assemblages are observed:Assemblage I-quartz-albite-chlorite-epidote-actinolite-(calcite)Assemblage II-quartz-albite-chlorite-calcite-epidoteAssemblage III-quartz-ankerite-sericite-(chlorite-calcite)Assemblage IV-quartz-albite-ankerite-sericiteLithogeochemical zoning is equally well developed as variations in whole-rock abundances ofAs, Au, Ba, Rb, and Sb. As and Ba form the most useful zonation patterns, outlining individual ore zones as well as broader trends of mineralization.Gas chromatographic analyses of fluid inclusions in the quartz-carbonate veins indicate that the mineralizing fluid was an H20-C02 mixture. Locally, CH4-rich fluid inclusions are associated with graphitic and/or carbonaceous wallrocks. Fluid inclusions in ore-bearing veins have higher CO2 contents than those in non-ore veins. Extensive sampling and analyses of veins from the area surrounding the deposit reveals a well developed zonation of CO2 contents about the main zone of mineralization. Low CO2 levels (1-2 mole%) in veins are peripheral to the deposit and increase to over 12 mole% in mineralized zones.The observed zoning of the carbonate alteration assemblages is a result of the addition of CO2 to the wallrock, which is consistent with the zoning of CO2 in the fluid inclusions.The zoning patterns delineated in this study are useful in exploration both on a deposit scale and on the scale of individual ore zones."
