Rockfall drapery systems are commonly used as a simple, fast and cheap measure against the rock falling trajectories affecting very steep slopes. The system basically consists of a steel mesh, which is held on the top edge with a longitudinal cable fixed by means of a suitable number of anchors. The effect of this kind of intervention is to control the falls of the rocks, which are driven toward the bottom with slow velocity, or are stabilized on place. It can be used on any kind of slope to protect sensitive target in the mining industry, roads and railways, and inhabited areas. The falling blocks, typically smaller than 0.6 - 1.0 m in diameter, pile up into a trench (or into a ?pocket of mesh?) at the bottom. In comparison to other types of rockfall interventions, the simple drapery is cheaper, and its maintenance is easier, but on the other hand it cannot be considered the remedy for shallow instabilities, because it can only mitigate the effect of the falling trajectories. The design of simple draperies requires the analysis of several factors like the slope features (height, gradient, morphology), the geological and dynamic features (nature of the ground or rock, type of instability, erosion problem, blocks size), the environmental condition (presence of vegetation, aesthetical problem), the installation problem (accesses to the slope, safety for the workers, safety for the surrounding areas) and finally the performance required (temporary or permanent intervention, required maintenance, cost). Finally the most problematic design-step is the choice of the suitable mesh, the top longitudinal cable, and the top anchors type. Because of the highly variable nature of rockfall behaviour these structures cannot be standardized, but they have to be analyzed and designed for each case. Maccaferri has developed a new software application (MacRO 2) has a practical tool to define the mesh and the related supporting structure composed by up-slope cable and anchors. The software, based on the approach proposed by Muhunthan B. et al. (2005), allows designers to verify the top longitudinal cable, the anchors, and the mesh drapery, and to plan for maintenance procedures. Even if the method seems quite simple and rough, it is effective and lets the designer correctly foresee the materials and the geometrical features to be used on the interventions. This paper analyses the condition for the simple drapery installation, the main steps for the calculations, and it will present a case study in a U.S. mine. Nevertheless, even if the software allows a quick and simple calculation approach, onsite observations are always recommended in order to achieve a good design, with the ultimate goal of protecting property and human lives.

As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

"Since early 2015, the price of nickel has dropped from the region of US$6/pound to current levels of around US$4.60/pound (March 2017), reflecting several market factors, but principally due to lower demand from China. Under such conditions, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain operating costs. In addition, labor and energy costs will continue to rise, while nickel ore grades will likely continue to drop. All major companies now accept the need for climate change action and consequently efforts are being made towards lowering carbon-based emissions. Nevertheless, meeting these challenges can also contribute to higher operating costs without parallel innovative developments - which at the same time, under current conditions, major companies are tending to curtail. In this paper, several productivity improvement opportunities to reduce unit operating costs at nickel sulphide and nickel laterite plants are reviewed. Opportunities include: (a) process technology and energy-type selection, production capability, optimization of process intensity and implementation of newer technologies; (b) improved productivity, equipment availability including maintenance best practice; (c) energy savings and recovery opportunities and use of energy surveys and, (d) process modeling and improved scheduling. Such improvements along with an uptick seen in nickel demand going forward should better position the world nickel industry.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an essential metal to modern society, primarily through its use as an important ingredient in stainless steel. Thus, stainless steel finds vital applications in food preparation facilities, as well as important uses in transportation and industrial applications. Canada has always played an important role in nickel production and nickel metallurgy. In the 1940s and 1950s, Canada supplied over 90% of the world’s nickel. However, this proportion has declined considerably to around 10% of the world nickel supply today. Still, Canada remains an important nickel supplier and contributor to nickel extractive technology. Due to the importance of nickel to society, nickel demand is expected to continually rise. On the other hand, nickel companies have been under pressure to contain production costs amid languishing nickel prices. While demand projections show nickel growth, there are uncertainties in actual levels of future market growth. Ore grades are dropping, while labour and energy costs, which are key cost contributors are rising, hence efforts to lower production costs will generally require innovative approaches."

During the operation of a mineral processing plant, the unit processes are investigated by analyzing the data extracted by means of stream sampling. The data structure is identical to the time series form. Data analysis is a crucial step in understanding the plant performance. To control the plant performance efficiently, it is very important to avoid sampling errors, which is impossible. However, it is possible to minimize these errors. The factors influencing these errors are divided into two categories: material properties illustrating its heterogeneity, and sampler features. The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of the material composition variation on sampling errors, and to compare our evaluation method with that of Gy. Note that the stream mass flowrate is assumed to be constant during the sampling process.

THE property of Consolidated 1 Discovery Yellowknife Mines Limited, (Figure I) is situated in the Northwest Territories, approximately 50 air miles north of the town of Yellowknife. The mine is reached by a shaft which extends from surface to a depth of 4,000 feet, with working levels established at 1 50-foot intervals. Stopping operations are carried on throughout a vertical range of 2,000 feet, with both shrinkage and cut and fill methods being used, depending on the ground conditions. Production started in 1950 and milling is done in a 1 65-ton per day cyanide plant. During ten months of the year, the property is serviced entirely by air, utilizing charter aircraft from Yellowknife. A 4,000-foot runway near the mine was constructed from mill tailings. This strip is adequate to receive Bristol freighter planes carrying heavy loads. Other servicing is done by Otter aircraft, equipped with skis or wheels for winter and with pontoons for summer operations.

Consensus-based approaches are becoming the most popularly applied way of achieving meaningful public participation. This paper introduces the principles surrounding consensus-building approaches and the processes for getting them started. The Healthy Communities Movement is one such consensus-based approach that offers a well-established holistic model for conceptualizing a healthy sustainable community. It also highlights the importance of public participation as an essential component of achieving a sustainable community. The paper concludes by illustrating how current company-community relations programs can utilize these models.

"In an attempt to address the issue of rising labour costs, and to improve productivity, a laser-based system to guide underground LHDs and trucks has been developed. This comprehensive system is known as the Opti-Trak system.Essentially, the vehicle is equipped with front and rear-mounted lasers which scan a reference strip mounted on the drift back. The vehicle follows this reference strip and in addition, based on reflective bar codes mounted beside the reference strip, initiates certain functions (i.e. dump cycle, speed change, brake check, etc.). Any programming that is drift-specific is handled by the positioning of the reference strips and bar codes. Consequently, the vehicle can easily travel to many different haulageways or branches, providing the reference strip and bar codes are in place.The advantages of this system are an immediate elimination of haulage operator costs and an increase in available hauling time to 7 hours out of an 8-hour shift as compared to the typical 5Y2 out of 8 hours that a manned haulage system offers.This paper describes the Opti-Trak system and the benefits to be realized from automation of mine haulage requirements."

En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. Le REMM a été enregistré le 6 juin 2002 et publié dans la Partie II de la Gazette du Canada le 19 juin 2002 (SOR/DORS/2002-222).

Canadian newspapers from coast to coast, have been, for months, denouncing those articles entitled, "The Whisper of Death," which have been appearing in the Montreal Star. I have not read these articles as the newspapers do not print them; they just denounce them or class them as jokes. Apparently they think that they are not suitable for the ordinary Canadian to read. It appears, however, that the Star has said that unless we balance our budget, and that soon, we shall be bankrupt. That seems to me like common sense, though the Victoria Times says editorially that the Star claims will "shortly find a place in the joke column". In this editorial the Times quotes with much enthusiasm from the Quebec Telegraph. "Canada," says the Telegraph, "is all right. Her natural resources are so vast that no one need worry. Her future possibilities are limitless; her assets beyond figures". Does it not seem like the limit of nonsense for a country that is not paying its running expenses to make such pretensions? After fifty-five years of Confederation and much talk of national status we are still sponging on the mother country for our external defense; we still allow the hard pressed tax-payer in the old land to shoulder the entire burden. We even now refuse to accept able-bodied working-men from that small and overcrowded country and yet blatently talk of limitless resources.

"INTRODUCTIONWestern Mines' copper-lead-zinc operations are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island. This park includes Buttle Lake, which flows into the Campbell River water system. The latter provides domestic water for the Town of Campbell River, approximately fifty-eight miles from the mine site.Operation of the concentrator commenced in December 1966, at which time the tailings were discharged into a small tailings pond near the plant. On May 8, 1967 Permit No. 185 was granted to the company, allowing discharge of the tailings, through a submerged outfall, to the bottom of Buttle Lake.Needless to say, the concept of operating a mine within a park, and the discharge of tailings into Buttle Lake generated considerable controversy. However, this has all but been eliminated over the years by the proven effectiveness of Western Mines' pollution control program. In 1973 this program was further upgraded with the addition of an alkaline chlorination plant. Effluent treatment by this method became necessary as a result of process modifications, and has been effective in maintaining the levels of characteristics in the tailings within the ever increasing pollution control requirements imposed on the industry."

?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. "The use of Caro's acid as a replacement for hydrogen peroxide for the oxidation of vanadium prior to solvent extraction resulted in a 56% reduction in oxidant usage when compared on an equivalent hydrogen peroxide basis. Comparative oxidation tests, using two actual uranium mill raffinates, resulted in premature precipitation of an amorphous ferric vanadate when hydrogen peroxide was used to oxidize one of the raffinates containing a high iron to vanadium ratio. The use of Caro's acid eliminated the precipitation problem, thereby permitting the adjustment of the raffinate pH to a higher, more favourable level prior to solvent extraction.Potentiometric characterization of the raffinates revealed that vanadium is responsible for the inefficiency of hydrogen peroxide compared with Caro's acid, with the oxidation efficiency of iron being the same for both oxidants. A limiting potential between 720 and 740 mV was observed when using hydrogen peroxide, while, when using Care's acid, potentials approaching 1200 mV were achievable.A four-stage, countercurrent extraction performed on the oxidized raffinates did not reveal any operational problems. The extraction efficiency and the extraction coefficient were found to be higher when Caro's acid was used as the oxidant, as opposed to hydrogen peroxide.IntroductionMost vanadium is recovered as a by-product of some other process: leaching of Carnotite uranium ores, oil fly ash, phosphate rock or chromite processing. The major source of vanadium has been from uranium mills incorporating acid leaching of Carnotite ore s at elevated temperatures and pressures. The by-product recovery of vanadium from uranium ores of the Uravan Mineral Belt, located in the Colorado Plateau , is a common occurrence when vanadium recovery is economically viable."

To isolate the tailings basin so surrounding land is not degraded. The first step here is stabilization of the surface to prevent wind and water erosion."

Introduction In the following discussion, boiler-feed and mine waters will be considered from the point of view of the problems arising from the chemical nature of the mineral and gaseous impurities they contain. The theories underlying some of these problems will be reviewed for the purpose of getting a clearer concept of the problems themselves. Certain terms of a chemical nature, necessary to the discussion, will be explained on the assumption that they are not generally familiar to mining engineers. Finally, an attempt will be made to correlate theory and practice, with the abject of establishing certain limits to factors relevant to the problems, and to show that these limits are justified by practical experience. The general problems occasioned by the presence of mineral and gaseous impurities in boiler-feed and mine waters are: (1) Scale formation and corrosion in boiler systems. (2) Corrosion of mine pumps and pump fittings. These will be discussed separately. Boiler Scale Typical analyses of waters available for use in steam power-plants are given in the accompanying Table (Table I). All analytical data are expressed in grains per Imperial gallon. The bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium in the raw waters are shown as normal carbonates in the Table. Substances in the first five rows constitute the encrusting solids. All the waters listed in Table I would be classified as 'very good' in the schedule of classification for boiler waters adopted by the American Association of Railway Chemists in 1887. In spite of this classification, however, the waters contain sufficient encrusting solids to cause serious scale trouble after prolonged evaporation.

"At first glance, the activities related to mining and mineral exploration appear to be local or domestic, rather than international, in nature. Minerals, as corporeal or tangible property, form an integral part of the land in which they are found until extracted and exploited commercially. Even in the latter phase, the tangible nature of minerals gives the impression that the law governing the commercialization of minerals is the law of their situs at any given time. The nature of minerals appears to negate the international aspect of mineral enterprises.The fundamental flaw in the above analysis is its focus upon the nature of minerals, rather than the role of persons in mineral enterprises. The high costs of mineral exploration and commercialization invariably require the involvement of international consortiums or joint ventures. Governments may not have access to the funds necessary to exploit the mineral resources that they control. Local or domestic enterprises may not have sufficient expertise for mineral exploration. Further, markets for various types of minerals are far from localized or static. For these and other reasons, the tangible and localized nature of minerals belies the fundamentally international nature of mineral exploration and commercialization."

To those who do not know Cobalt, our opinion may seem prejudiced and our statement exaggerated.Be that as it may, discussion on this subject can be profitable, since it is worthwhile now and then to think on 'whence we came' and 'where we are going'.In the revival of interest in the Cobalt camp, we hope our guests may feel some of the old Cobalt Spirit, which has become the Spirit of the North.Visitors may even, while here, catch a glimpse of that whimsical little guardian spirit of the camp - the original goblin, the Kobold - for which Cobalt was named.While Kobold brings that good luck which plays so important a part in mining, he can have his evil moments, as in his original German home. There, when he made the silver disappear from their good ore, they cursed the grey ore, calling it Kobold.Although this little goblin bas frequently upset our best mining plans and geological calculations, be has played the game as well. Geological assessment of active mine faces enables ore grade control, geological modelling and exploration planning. Monitoring of the mine advancement at every drill-blast-muck cycle allows for effective production management. However, geological assessments are performed infrequently due to the need to travel to active mine faces, and detailed surveys to map the mine progress are performed at the end of the month. Instant Mine Modeller (iMM) is a portable ruggedized stereo-vision system that creates photo-realistic three-dimensional models of underground mine faces on-site. The 3D models are generated automatically within minutes and can be viewed underground and annotated with geological information. The overall ore percentages of the face are calculated automatically for grade control. Annotated 3D models are located in the mine coordinate system and can be imported into mine management systems. iMM allows for daily monitoring of the mine progress and geology, and for re-visiting the mine virtually as it existed. iMM has been deployed in an underground hard rock mine for 18 months, and it effectively brings the underground work face into mine management offices enabling the right decisions at the right time. iMM has demonstrated benefits to various mine processes including grade control, geological mapping, 3D photo-realistic as-built and production volume.

"Most FeNi furnaces used to rely on post-combustion and off-gas cooling inside the furnace to eliminate the produced CO gas, and control the off gas temperature. As furnace load, capacity, and thus gas volumes increased over the years, this led to increased instabilities that can cause problems in controlling the operation. Some of the large capacity furnaces nowadays work with partial or full combustion outside the furnace, more similar to the steel industry. Forced combustion with or without enriched air and other additions can support in controlling post-combustion, stabilizing and even reducing off gas amounts, and affecting composition. This paper presents some of the possibilities and advantages of having a specially designed post-combustion system for the FeNi laterite industry, but that could also be applied to other processes as well.Large Scale Furnaces In the FeNi industry, the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) process is still going strong in spite of continuous hope that hydrometallurgical processes will one day make the RKEF plant obsolete. Within the pyrometallurgical plants there is a continuous trend for larger scale furnaces. The development for a number of furnaces that were started before 1985 and increased capacity by “natural growth” is given in Figure 1. Natural growth refers to the development of the plants that after having mastered a certain level of operation, were ready for a higher load that could be installed either with a new furnace on the same site, or during a revamp. The advantages of natural growth are numerous, for example: •,Deep knowledge of the ore and its’ behavior, no need for testing, and little risk of surprises. •,Mining, laboratory, equipment, etc. is all proven technology for the conditions on site. •,Starting a furnace with increased capacity is a re-start, not a green-field commissioning. •,Typically, when increasing the production capacity of an existing plant, not the entire plant is commissioned for the first time, but only a part. In the FeNi laterite industry for example, the kilns may already have had the capacity to provide enough material."

The key drivers for the copper smelting industry are a complex mix of economic and "human" factors which combine to drive technology in new directions and can provide a strong indication of future industry trends. Recent examples have been the drive to achieve increased scale of production and resultant cost efficiencies by using a single furnace high intensity smelting vessel, and the broad acceptance of Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) technology for this duty. The development and adoption of continuous converting processes to counter the increased pressures faced by the Peirce Smith converting process is another example of the need for innovation. This paper discusses the merits of the continuous converting process, describes how the Ausmelt TSL batch converting process has been adapted to the new Ausmelt Continuous Copper Converting (C3) process in response to these industry trends and examines the Ausmelt continuous converting flowsheet options available to the end user.

World mineral production is dominated by six countries - the U.S., the U.S.S.R , Canada, South Africa, Australia and China - which also hold most of the reserves of the world?s minerals. For the developed and centrally planned countries, there is a strong positive correlation between the mineral production of a country and its land area: there is no correlation between mineral production and land area for the less developed countries. These facts imply that, after taking due account of geological controlling factors, a country may expect to produce minerals in approximate proportion to its land are a provided that political, economic, and historical factors are conducive to mineral exploration and mining. Contrary to popular political belief in many parts of the world, the developed countries are the major source of mineral imports for the industrialized countries. Moreover, exports of ores and minerals account for a relatively small par t of world trade, and are an important factor in the export picture of only a few of the less-developed countries. The looming resource confrontation between the developed and the less-developed countries is based largely on the false premise that the industrialized countries of the world are minerals-poor and owe their wealth to cheap minerals from the less-developed countries. The data presented refute this. Geological controls are relatively minor in the present distribution of world mineral production; political and economic factors are dominant. It is argued that an expansion of world trade in minerals - based on increased exploration and new forms of finance for mining ventures - rather than cartels, price-fixing and trade restrictions is by far the preferable solution to the problem of redressing the legitimate grievances of the poor countries of the world.
