The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of fluorspar from 35 domestic and 50 foreign, mines and deposits in 13 countries. Only 6 domestic properties are considered to be economic reserves, as 29 domestic deposits were found to have an average total cost of production that was uneconomical at a breakeven (0 pct) DCFROR. The 50 foreign properties evaluated were selected to represent at least 85 pct of the known demonstrated fluorspar resources located in market economy countries and China. All evaluated foreign operations were found to be economic to marginally economic in January 1984 dollars. World demonstrated ore reserves of 344 million metric tons (mt) containing 123 million mt of CaF2 were evaluated for the 56 operations. Average total costs needed to cover all costs over the life of each operation were determined for all recoverable fluorspar products. Comparisons of mining, beneficiation, and transportation costs per mt of fluorspar concentrate illustrate advantages between countries. Of the three largest producing countries, China, with its high-grade, low-cost operations had the lowest weighted average total cost of production ($38/mt concentrate). Mexico was next at $54/mt concentrate, and South Africa needed an average of $90/mt of concentrate to cover all costs of production for its low grade deposits.

"The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

In underground mining, rock fragment size is a key variable for productivity because it impacts equipment selection and mining structure design. This study characterizes granular material fragmentation during its flow to understand its characteristics and mechanisms. Tests were conducted using a laboratory setup to emulate various heights where material is drawn. The fragment-size distribution was measured before and after tests for clay, concrete fragments, and gravel. Results showed that fragmentation mainly occurs in minor sizes, with significant increases in fine material as travel distance increases.

This chapter on the square-set system of mining em¬bodies the results of a special study of the subject made as a part of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) general investigation of mining methods and costs. Data for the chapter were gathered by the authors during visits to mines using square-set mining, from information circu¬lars prepared by consulting engineers to the USBM on mining methods at individual mines, and from articles in the technical press and the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Al¬though some of the properties discussed are no longer in operation, the methods described are still valid. The square-set system of mining has been very widely applied and is one of the oldest methods in use in the US. It is mainly employed for extracting rela¬tively high-grade ore in heavy ground. It is also useful in taking out pillars left in mining by other methods. It is used to some extent as an auxiliary method with many underground systems and as an alternate with cut-and¬fill, shrinkage, and open-stope methods when heavy ground is encountered. In some cases as much as 50% of the ore may be extracted by square setting at mines listed as using some other method of mining. A large tonnage has been mined yearly by square setting, prin¬cipally in the western states. Due to the high cost of timber and the relatively low average production per manshift, this system generally is not used when the ore can be mined by some other method; it usually is adopted as a last resort. Square setting, however, has a special field in that ore bodies not minable by other methods can be stoped by this system. As square-set mining was widely known, there was a tendency for years to use the method regardless of its suitability. With the increasing need for economy and the development of other methods, square setting has been superseded in many mines by cut-and-fill, top slic¬ing, or sublevel caving methods. The term square-set mining as used in this chapter includes all stoping methods in which the space made by the removal of the ore is timbered with framed sets. The sets usually are square in horizontal section. The stope may or may not be filled with waste rock as stoping progresses. HISTORY OF THE SQUARE-SET SYSTEM Prior to 1860, open-stope methods with stulls for casual support accounted for most of the mineral pro¬duction from underground mines. Attempts to mine large ore bodies that required artificial support resulted in disastrous cave-ins and loss of life. The art of mining received a tremendous impetus following the introduc¬tion of methods for mining the bonanza ore body which was discovered in 1860 in the Ophir mine on the Comstock lode, Virginia City, NV. This ore body was phe¬nomenally rich and eventually proved to be 122 m (400 ft) high, 27 m (90 ft) wide, and 98 m (320 ft) long. The mining of this large high-grade ore body taxed the best engineering talent of the time; the problem was finally solved by Philip Deidesheimer. According to Eliot Lord (1882): "At the 50-foot level the vein of black sulphurets was only 3 or 4 feet thick, and could be readily extracted through a drift along its line, propping up the walls and roof when necessary by simple uprights and cap-posts. As the ledge descended the sulphuret vein grew broader until, at the depth of 175 feet, it was 65 feet in width, and the miners were at a loss how to proceed, for the ore was so soft and crumbling that pillars could not be used to support the roof as in coal mines. They spliced timbers together to hold up the caving ground; but these jointed props were too weak and ill-supported to with¬stand the pressure upon them, and were constantly broken and thrown out of place. The dilemma was a curious one. Surrounded by riches, they were yet un¬able to carry them off and their mass of black sulphurets bade fair to become a white elephant on their hands. The Ophir Company began to wish themselves less for¬tunate, as their miners narrowly escaped burial day after day in their attempts to stope out the ore. "A young mining engineer, Philip Deidesheimer, was in charge of a quartz mine in Georgetown, El Dorado County, Calif., in the autumn of 1860, when this serious check to the development of the lode occurred. At the request of William F. Babcock, a trustee of the Ophir Company, Mr. Deidesheimer left his California mine and crossed the mountains with a letter from the direc¬tors of the Ophir Company, authorizing him to inspect the workings of their mines and make such changes in the method of timbering as should seem to him expe¬dient. After examining the vein he designed, in the course of a few weeks, a system of timbering which proved to be exactly adapted to the requirements of the work. Experiments which he had previously made in California gravel and quartz mines furnished the out¬line of his plan. This was to frame timbers together in rectangular sets, each set being composed of a square base, placed horizontally, formed of four timbers, sills, and crosspieces from 4 to 6 feet long, surmounted at the corners by four posts from 6 to 7 feet high, and capped by a framework similar to the base. The cap pieces forming the top of any set were at the same time the sills or base of the next set above. These sets could readily be extended to any required height and over any given area, forming a series of horizontal floors, built up from the bottom sets like the successive stories of a house. The spaces between the timbers were filled with waste rock or with wooden braces, forming a solid cube when¬ever the maximum degree of firmness was desired. By adjustments of these sets the ore bodies along the line of the lode were extracted with comparative ease and security." "The drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a coproduct of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut off 10 percent of the world’s vanadium output. In February 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation.This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries — China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 96 percent of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage.This article summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal.Trend in vanadium explorationThe most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grades than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers.The 10 percent shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the state of Bahia in Brazil. It commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to produce between 7.6 and 8.6 kt (8,421 and 9,523 st) of V2O5 in 2016 at a target production cost of $3.71/lb (Largo Resources, 2016). This is the first primary vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in more than 35 years."

Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is the largest primary producer of platinum and palladium in North America. SMC operates two underground mines in south central Montana, along the 45-km (28-mile) platinum/palladium J-M Reef in the Stillwater Complex. The Stillwater Mine exploits 9.6 km (6 miles) of deposit strike length and East Boulder Mine exploits 4 km (2.5 miles) of deposit length. The two mines are 20.4 km (12.7 miles) apart with SMC controlling a considerable length along the entire J-M Reef trace. Production at the Stillwater Mine began in 1986 and in 1988 the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned, becoming an integral part of mine development at SMC. TBMs have been used for developing production footwall laterals (FWL) to access new mining blocks at the Stillwater Mine, as well as boring twin crosscut ac-cess tunnels at the East Boulder. Two TBM development expansion projects are currently in progress: the Graham Creek project at the East Boulder Mine, which will extend footwall lateral development 2,591 m (8,500 ft) to the west, and the Blitz project, where a TBM will be commissioned to extend east out of the Stillwater Mine to 3,658 m (12,000 ft) beyond the current production mining front. General strike and dip of the Reef is west to east and to the north, respectively.

Mine planners are under pressure to evaluate the impact of changing economic times and newly acquired data on their mine plans. Incorporating changes such as commodity prices, customer sales, fluctuating cost assumptions and newly acquired geologic data requires quick turnaround for model building and planning to keep mine plans on pace with changes as they occur. Because of the length of time required to perform some of the geologic modeling and mine planning tasks, planning frequency may not be keeping pace with the frequency of change. To meet these challenges, one leading North American mining company successfully increased the frequency rate and accuracy of its mine plans to stay current with incoming data, ensuring its mine plans reflect the latest information, thereby minimizing or eliminating production cost variance.

The Equis and El Roble projects are located in the Cordillera Occidental of Colombia. The Equis vein deposits have sulfide ore reserves of 95.9.5.5 mt (105.770 st) grading 8.51 g/mt (0.248 oz/st) gold and 12.4 g/ml (0.36 oz/st) silver with 0.94 % copper. 1.10 a lead and 11.06% zinc. Ore reserves at El Roble are estimated as 1.1% Mmt (1.21 million st) grading 4.89% copper and 3.39 g/mt (0.099 oz/st) ,old. Geologically possible reserves at Equis may total 1.6.Mmt (1.76 million it). El Roble has the potential to contain several tens of millions of metric tons. Exploration included diamond drilling, trenching, channel sampling, rock and soil geochemistry, geophysics and tunneling. Erratic high grade samples affect the weighting of channel and drill core samples. Secondary reconcentration of gold is also a factor. Sample maps and graphs show the distribution of values to be highly variable. Geostatistical treatment of some of these data gave important guidelines for parameters such as sampling densities, drill hole spacing and confidence limits.

The St Lawrence Seaway, a deep-water canal system between Montreal and Lake Ontario, was opened for navigation on April 25, 1959. Prior to the opening of the new Seaway, small boats known as canalers and a few deep-sea carriers, primarily from Norway since World War II, were the only ships able to journey past Montreal into Lake Ontario through the old Canadian St. Lawrence canal system. Thus it was necessary for many tons of bulk and general cargo to be shipped all-rail to and from Atlantic ports or to be transhipped to and from canalers. With the opening of the new Seaway, large Great Lakes bulk carriers and a much larger percentage of the world's shipping fleet are now able to sail directly from the sea to the heart of industrial North America. In this paper, the historical events leading up to the construction of the Seaway and the physical nature of the Great Lakes transportation system are briefly reviewed. Following this, an attempt is made to evaluate the effects of the new Seaway on Canada's mineral industry. Because the Seaway has been in operation for only one season, this paper must be considered only an interim report. Because of the importance of the Seaway to iron ore, this commodity will be dealt with in detail, although the effect on other mineral commodities such as coal, petroleum, nonferrous ores, iron and steel will be mentioned. "A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

There is little doubt that the stability of both highwalls and spoil piles is essential to efficient strip mining. Accurate determination of the appropriate geotechnical parameters will pay dividends during mining, but only if the mine operation closely follows the engineering plans which have incorporated These factors. Productivity is invariably higher in mines where failure of highwalls and spoil piles does not occur. This is the result of the reduced rehandle and better working conditions found in stable mines. Control of the waste piles and highwalls also leads to better coal recover since failures can result in the burial of uncovered coal, which is then lost to mining. Safety is an important consideration. The importance of providing a safe working place for employees and of protecting costly mining equipment is hard to overemphasize. For miners, working in areas where instability exists, the degree of hazard involved in their occupation is increased particularly where night operations are involved. It is true, too, that there have been many cases where loading equipment has been buried and severely damaged by failures.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority's Long Term Control Plan includes tunnels, sewer separation, pumping station rehabilitation and green infrastructure to reduce combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharges to the District waterways. The Northeast Boundary Tunnel is a deep, large sewer tunnel that will reduce CSO discharges; signifi- cantly mitigate known chronic flooding in the Northeast Boundary drainage area and improve the water quality of the Anacostia River. This paper presents the unique combination of Owner and Contractor perspectives of the entire Project from conception through procurement, execution, and contract management, providing lesson learned, chal- lenges encountered, and solutions implemented to deliver the Project successfully.

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the '70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the '80s. Computers are used as an aid in the design and selection of the mill drive system; sophisticated computer graphics are used to create manufacturing drawings; and a new generation of gear cutting machines are used to manufacture the gears. These new gear cutters can generate-cut gears over 40' (12.2 m) in diameter at an AGMA quality level exceeding the currenty acceptable standards. The precision of the resulting gear assures maximum tooth contact, which will result in longer gear set life.

Albert Einstein once said, ?the important thing is not to stop questioning.? In the mining industry, a lack of inquisitiveness may lead to a blissful ignorance but it certainly will not increase efficiencies. While one may claim necessity is the mother of invention, questioning and analyzing how methods and systems can be improved is the catalyst to discovering necessities. Understandably, when working in the middle of Canada?s oil sands, where trucks operate around the clock every day of the year, it is nearly impossible to pull the nose from the grindstone long enough to provide thorough analysis. But, fortunately, some manufacturers/inventors have assisted by examining the process and the ensuing headaches within this application.

Andalusite is a member of the sillimanite group of minerals consisting of andalusite, kyanite, and sillimanite. These minerals are the structural polymorphs of Al,Si05 (the anhydrous silicate of aluminium) and although chemically similar, they differ in physical properties due to their different crystal structures. For further information on the sillimanite group, see the chapter on Kyanite and Related Minerals that follows. The minerals are generally the products of the metamorphism of alumina-rich sediments and are found in schists, gneisses, or hornfelses, which have undergone either regional or thermal metamorphism from their original form. Sedimentary deposits may also form since the minerals are chemically and physically resistant to breakdown. When heated to a sufficiently high temperature the sillimanite group minerals convert to mullite with a resultant volume expansion and the liberation of silica. Due to the stability of the mullite formed, its high hot strength and resistance to chemical and physical erosion, they are widely used in the manufacture of refractories and special ceramics (Table 1). The reaction can be represented as follows: [ ] The worldwide use of these minerals depends to a large degree on their availability (Fig. 1). Andalusite, with its lower conversion temperature and the lowest volume expansion on being heated is the natural choice as a raw material to produce energy-saving refractories without prior calcination. The Republic of South Africa holds by far the largest minable andalusite deposits of the world, estimated at some 70 Mt of known in situ reserves. The only other large commercial production of andalusite comes from France, with known reserves of about 5 Mt. Potential new deposits are known from China, Ireland, Australia, and South America. World consumption of andalusite in special performance refractories has risen from less than 10 ktpy in 1960 to nearly 300 ktpy in 1990, which is due to cost effectiveness in many industrial applications compared to other conventional refractory products. Andalusite-based refractories have traditionally been used in Europe, South Africa, and the Far East; usage in America was limited in the past due to relatively high delivery costs and availability of other local refractory minerals. However, there is a significant trend towards greater use of andalusite in North America, thus opening new markets and replacing other traditional refractory raw materials. GEOLOGY Andalusite occurs in metamorphosed rocks of clay-like com- position, as in the andalusite-hornfelses in thermal aureoles (contact metamorphism), formed under conditions of high temperatures and low stress, and in regional metamorphic rocks, such as the andalusite-schists. These schists are mostly unconnected with definite igneous intrusions but were presumably also formed at high temperatures and under low stress. Andalusite can also appear in alluvial deposits associated with the primary deposits. At depths of 10 to 20 km, temperatures of up to 450°C might be expected. Another result of increasing depth is an increase of pressure due to the load of the rock cover. The load stresses involved in metamorphism is generally believed to lie in the range 0 to 10 000 bars. During contact metamorphism the increase in temperature is brought about by the injection of magma. The temperature reached in the country rock at some distance from the igneous body will always be less than the initial temperature of the intrusion, which is presumably less than 1 200°C, and will vary with time and distance from the contact. A simple metamorphic reaction involving dehydration of an aluminous sediment can be: [ ] At higher temperatures sillimanite would form at the expense of andalusite, while kyanite would be the mineral formed at higher pressures, as can be seen in the phase diagram of A12Si05 (Fig. 2).

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

Jim Walter Resources Blue Creek No. 3 Mine was opened in one of the most gassy coal beds in the United States. Although face ventilation requirements exceeded 14,000 cfm (6 .6m3/s) air, continuous miner sections experienced an unacceptable frequency of frictional ignitions. Modifications offered primarily by the U. S. Bureau of Mines such as diffuser fans, water spray fans, and slow speed cutting motors were used with little success. However, laboratory tests conducted at the U. S. Bureau of Mines indicated that an increase in bit attack angle from 50° to 55°-57° significantly reduced the chances of the bit causing a frictional ignition. An experimental miner drum was built using this concept coupled with a new bit designed by the Bureau and manufactured by Hughes Tool Company that better protected the bit steel shank with a carbide cap. It was installed on a continuous miner and placed in an area of the mine prone to ignitions. 50,000 tons (45,500 metric tons) of coal were cut without a frictional ignition. When the miner was withdrawn for rebuild and a machine with an unmodified cutting drum placed in service, two ignitions occurred before 10,000 tons (9,100 metric tons) were mined. Other machines have been rebuilt and are in service, and to date none have been known to cause an ignition.

This paper describes a case history of geochemical prospecting. An area of known mineralization was available for an orientation survey which led to the selection of elements and criteria for a reconnaissance survey in the area offsetting the known mineralization. Certain anomalies were found which were then made subject of confirmation sampling and of rock geochemical investigations. Inasmuch as the geochemical prospecting technique specifically led to a detailed area which now serves as a target for drilling and other exploration efforts, the geochemical prospecting part of the program is considered successfully concluded and, therefore, reported on here. Whether the target area will turn out to host the deposit or not is, of course, of utmost importance to the Company, but is of less importance to this paper. We will describe the concepts, the planning, the execution, the analysis and the interpretation of this typical geochemical prospecting case. A number of people on the staff of International Oil & Gas, Inc. have participated in this prospect, as have students from Southeast Missouri State University and their professor, Gary M. Lowell. In addition, the Missouri Geological Survey has been most helpful with records and letters on the century-old prospecting and mining in the general area. Many valuable discussions have also been held with geologists from the industry who, from time to time, have visited the area, examined the property and reviewed the status of the project. The support and interest from all these parties has made it possible to pursue and expand this exploration concept from one of being just "more of the same kind" to the most chal-1enging and exciting with which this author has ever been involved, namely the prospect for tin porphyry deposits in the mid-continent United States.
