A new instrument for measuring bulk and grain vol-urnes is described, and compared in accuracy with two modifications of Nutting's method, All three methods are reasonably fast, and in all three the probable error in the determinations of bulk volume can be kept down to about 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. INTRODUCTION The new pycnometer described in this paper is designed to give speed without sacrificing accuracy. Some time ago Russell1 described a somewhat similar appa-ratus; however, the instrument described in the present paper is more accurate. Nutting' designed the pycnom-eter shown in Fig. 1 (A and B), and Pirson3 has shown points like those of Fig. 1-D. The procedure described in this paper for using Nutting's pycnometer has been modified from that used by Nutting. CHOICE OF LIQUIDS The best liquids for measuring grain volumes are hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons which evaporate slowly. Trimethylbenzene or mesitylene, triethylben-zene, carbon tetrachloride, and tertalin have been used for this purpose. Any of these liquids or mercury may be used for measuring bulk volume. PREVENTING ERRORS DUE TO INVASION OF LIQUID Errors due to the invasion of the porous, permeable bulk samples by the liquid of measurement may be prevented or greatly reduced by using mercury, by applying an impervious coating, or by soaking the bulk samples in the liquid of measurement until bubbles cease issuing from them. Errors are produced only by the invasion of the samples which occurs between movement when the samples are weighed in air and the moment the weight of liquid displaced by the sample in the pycnometer is determined. No error is produced by varying degrees of filling of the pore space of the samples by the liquid of measurement. The excess liquid should be wiped from the samples immediately before the weight in air W1, is determined, and they should be placed in the pycnometers immediately. OPERATION OF NEW INSTRUMENT The new pycnometer is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of two glass parts which fit together at a ground glass joint. The spaces J and D are connected by fine glass tubes E, and the space J must be larger than the space D by at least the volume of the largest sample to be tested. This paper reports investigative work conducted to develop a method of estimating the groundwater influx from a homogeneous permeable formation into a vertical mine shaft during sinking. A method of analysis was developed using data obtained from pumping tests and a modification of the Theis non-equilibrium interpretation technique. Excess influx of groundwater into mine shafts has long been one of the more important problems encountered in the development of a mining property. Much work has been done on methods of preventing such influx and on pumping schemes to control inflow if preventive measures fail. The fundamental aspects of the problem, on the other hand, seem to have been neglected. The purpose of this paper is to review the fundamentals of groundwater flow and to propose a rapid method of analyzing hydrologic data in order to estimate influx from a homogeneous permeable formation into a mine shaft. Such an estimate of the quantity of water to be encountered is of value in planning grouting, pumping and other programs designed to control that influx. It is emphasized that the proposed method of analysis should be regarded only as a tool to be used in evaluating the problem before investing the capital necessary to begin development of a property. FUNDAMENTALS OF GROUNDWATER FLOW In order to effectively approach the problem of estimating influx into a mine shaft, a knowledge of the fundamentals of fluid flow through a porous medium is necessary. Darcy, in 1856, developed an empirical relationship to explain the flow of water through sand filters. This relationship V = k (dh/dl), is the basis for all other flow formulae. It has been shown that Darcy's relation is a solution of the Laplace equation and thus is analagous to other natural phenomena such as heat flow. Theis, using the analogy of heat flow by conduction, developed an expression for determining the transient or time-dependent groundwater flow through a homogeneous, isotropic medium. The resulting equation Was also derived by Jacob using hydrologic considerations alone.' The individual terms in the equation are described in Table I. It is important to understand the assumptions upon which this equation is based. 1) The medium through which the fluid flows is infinite in areal extent, homogeneous and isotropic. 2) The well into which the fluid discharges completely penetrates the medium. 3) The characteristics of the medium remain constant at all times. 4) The initial pressure surface is horizontal. 5) The confining media are impervious and horizontal. 6) Fluid is removed from storage instantaneously by a decline in pressure. 7) The diameter of the discharge well is infinitesimal with respect to the drainage radius of the medium.

This paper discusses the major portion of the hoist (drag or crowd) system and it shows how static control accomplishes its major aims. In 1959, the first truly static control for Ward-Leonard equipped electric excavators was designed, developed and placed in service. The control system, originally intended only as a more modern electronic type of alternate to the proven rotating amplifier control system has since proven to be much more. When they conceived the original system, the designers had much more in mind than simply replacing the rotating amplifier with one that had no moving parts. The long range plan, which started with the initial system consisting of an SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) preamplifier and magnetic amplifier power amplifier, called for eventually, a control system low in cost and maintenance, relatively simple in design and extremely reliable. The plan also included the elimination of as many of the shortcomings of the rotating system as possible. No small accomplishment, when it is considered that the rotating control system had been, with only minor modifications, the standard of the industry for 20 years. The final step in the original design plan called for the eventual development of an amplifier that could be used as one of the basic building blocks of the future. DEVELOPMENT RESULTS Since the successful unveiling of the first static control system, continuous development has resulted in a slow, but sure progression along the path described by the original plan. The first version of the new control corrected one of the shortcomings of the rotating system by removing the necessity of operator anticipation. This was accomplished by making the system faster in response so that the operator noticed virtually no delay between his movement of the master controller and that of the machine. Thus, after the operator became familiar with the operating characteristics of the machine, he was able to become more relaxed while digging. The natural result of this accomplishment was higher production. All of the subsequent versions of this new control were even faster than the initial design. Although it was not distinguishable by the operator, the further increase in response resulted in large gains in the limiting of transient torque peaks applied to the machine while digging. Also, a more effective control of the torque and power peaks was obtained when plugging the motion being controlled to a stop. SURFACE effects in the deformation of metal single crystals have been noted by a variety of workers.&apos; A large majority of these experiments have used surface roughening or a second chemical constituent at the surface. We performed the following experiment to see how the presence of a fine polycrystalline layer influenced the stress-strain behavior of single crystals of zinc. Spherical single crystals oriented for single slip were acid-machined into cylindrical dumbbell-shape shear specimens having a gage length of 3.2 mm and a cross section of 20 sq mm. The crystals were then deformed varying amounts at the surface of the gage section with emery paper. Following this treatment, the crystals were heated for approximately 8 hr at 200°C. This resulted in a polycrystalline surface layer, with an observed grain size of approximately 1/10 mm in diameter. Deformation of these crystals was undertaken at 78°K in pure shear, the shear direction <1120> lying in the basal plane. The deformation apparatus has been described elsewhere.2 The presence of a polycrystalline layer markedly raises the first observed plastic deformation, as can be seen from Fig. 1. This yield stress is then followed by a region of low work hardening comparable to that observed in shear tests on similar untreated zinc single crystals. However, the extent of easy glide is quite seriously curtailed, and is followed by a more rapid increase in work hardening, reminiscent of Stage II observed in the deformation of fcc crystals. The higher yield can probably be attributed to the difficulty of penetrating the grain boundaries by dis locations from sources interior to the boundaries. If we associate this yield stress with this breakthrough, then we might expect that more dislocations would be trapped in the crystal than is normally the case. If there is an increased density of trapped dislocations, this could lead to an increase in the amount of trapping with increasing strain, giving a larger strain hardening in the crystal. Although other explanations can be given, it is quite tempting to characterize the region of increased work hardening as a manifestation of Stage II-type deformation. This seems reasonable if the polycrystalline layer is quite efficient in holding up a large number of dislocations. In zinc crystals, since it is well-known that the slip distance can be as large as the specimen dimensions, one would only expect to entrap a large number of dislocation with very large crystals or by applying surface layers. If this interpretation of increased strain hardening is correct, it might present a method of studying Stage II in single crystals of zinc. THE advent of curved jaw crusher wearing plates made an approach other than segmental layout analysis desirable for prediction of capacities. For some time it had been known that the drawing board capacities of crushers using these plates had to be considerably modified by complicated experience factors to achieve agreement with results. Because these apparent capacities could be readily increased severalfold by minor crushing chamber shape changes, it was necessary that the utmost precaution be taken in predicting capacities of jaw plates modified for nonchoking, special wear characteristics, or any other reason. To this end the laboratory and field tests outlined by the author in a previous paper1 were made on Blake-type jaw crushers. The results of these tests were summarized in a simple first degree equation applicable to crushers using either straight or curved jaw plates. This equation first outlines the maximum capacity potential of a given crusher, then reduces this figure in accordance with installation circumstances by means of a realization factor. It was found subsequently that this equation, with the addition of an eccentric throw factor, is applicable to standard types of single-toggle or overhead eccentric jaw crushers as far as maximum capacity potential is concerned. However, these crushers have realization factor curves somewhat different from those outlined for the Blake type. While this paper is concerned principally with standard type single-toggle crusher capacities, the evaluation of data obtained with these machines is simplified by comparative reduction to the 10 x 7 in. Blake-type equivalents upon which the summary of the preceding paper was made. Convertibility of data from one type of crusher to the other also tends towards confirmation of both. The agreement of these data is sufficient to be considered complimentary. Consequently the feed factors, f, previously reported for Blake crushers are slightly adjusted to an average with the single-toggle crusher results. In the case of corrugated jaw plates it is measured from the tip of one corrugation to the bottom of the valley opposite. t is the length of jaw stroke in inches at the bottom of the crushing chamber. It is the difference between open and close-side settings. n is rpm, or crushing cycles per minute, a is the nip-angle factor. It is unity for 26" and 3 pct greater for each less nip-angle degree. A nip-angle of 20" has an a value of 1.18, and an angle of 30" has an a value of 0.88, see Fig. 1. r is the realization factor. It is unity for perfectly uniform choke feeding and usually less for actual operating conditions according to the method of feeding used and the probabilities of hang-ups involving the size of feed and crusher opening. Approximate values are given by the curves in Fig. 2. These values are further reduced by intermittent feeding, e is the throw or diameter of gyration of the single-toggle crusher eccentric in inches. As evident in Fig. 1A, variation of feed size will generally have little effect on nip-angle if both jaw plates have flat areas. Jaw plates having continuous curvature, as in Fig. 1B will have different nip-angles, depending upon the size of feed. For test work as described in this paper this effect was accounted. For general compilation of capacities for average feeds it is suggested that the nip-angle be taken at the various settings computed, at an arbitrary level, such as is indicated in Fig. 1C. Data Evaluation To bring the Blake and single-toggle type crusher capacity test results to common terms for evaluation, all data are converted to terms of 10 x 7 in. Blake-type performance at conditions of 100 lb per cu ft, 10 in. chamber width, 250 rpm, 0.65 in. stroke, 3-in. openside setting, and 18° nip-angle. (The nip-angle of the 10x7 in. Blake is 18° at 3-in. setting.) The single-toggle crusher performances are also divided by the eccentric throw to bring this effect to unity. As outlined,&apos; laboratory and field tests made on Blake-type crushers ranging from 10 x 7 in. to 60 x 48 in. were summarized along the foregoing conditions of speed, stroke, etc. This resulted in groups of data which correspond to feeds with fines, feeds

THE anthracite-producing region is in the northeastern section of Pennsylvania, and has an area of approximately 484 square miles. It is divided geographically into three separate fields, known as the Northern, Middle and Southern. The Northern field, with Wilkes-Barre approximately at its center, is a basin about 60 miles long and almost 6 miles wide at its greatest distance across. Generally speaking, it may be said that the coal meas-ures in this field lie horizontally, or on slight pitches, and consist of from 11 to 19 veins of coal, varying in thickness from several inches to several feet. The intervening strata between veins may be composed of slate, clay, rock or shale, or a combination of several, and are sometimes very thin. This condition often causes a treacherous roof, therefore roof sup-port and the attending hazard of mining are problems of concern. The Middle field is made up of a number of small basins of not very great depth, and the measures, which are in like number to those of the Northern field, are varying inclinations running from nearly flat to steep pitches.

The mineral pyrite (or marcasite) occurs in coal beds as balls, lenses, veinlets and bands. Several million tons are w-asted annually on the refuse dumps from coal mining and coal-preparation activities. Sporadic attempts have been made in the United States to recover this pyrite for manufacture of sulphuric acid but only a few plants have succeeded in recovering it on a commercial scale. Shipments of pyrite from coal mines during 1941 were reported as follows: Illinois -The Midland Electric Coal Corp., Henry County, shipped 12,026 long tons containing 46 pct sulphur, at its Atkinson preparation plant. Indiana—The Snow Hill Coal Corp. produced pyrite from its Talleydalc preparation plant in Vigo County. Kansas—The Mineral Products Co. produced 3902 long tons of pyrite containing 44 pct of sulphur from picking table and washery refuse. Specifications for coal pyrite for acid manufacture rangc from 5 to 8 pct maximum carhon limit, and 42 to 45 pct minimum sulphur limit. Where flash roasting is practiced, the pyrite must be minus 100-mesh. Most companies give no size specifications. One company specifies 20- mesh or finer. Impurities in pyrite other than carbon may limit its use—for instance, arsenic, probably as arseno pyrite-—even though a concentrate can be made complying with specifications otherwise. Pyrite-recovery Plants Bradford breakers and picking tables may be used to make a marketable product where the pyrite occurs largely in sizes coarser than about I in. To make a grade of concentrate acceptable to sulphuric-acid plants the pyrite must break freely from the accompanying coal and slate, which is a rare condition to find. Most pyrite occurring in coal beds requires crushing and an abrasive type of grinding to free it of entwined coal and slate, followed by mechanical concentration by jigs, tables or other concentrating devices suitable for heavy ores, to make a satisfactory concentrate. At the Snow Hill Coal Corporation&apos;s plant in Indiana and at the Midland Electric Corporation&apos;s plant at Xtkinson, Ill., the final concentrate is made by a mechanical jig. The most recent and complete mill for concentrating pyritc from coal-mine refuse is that of the Mineral Products Co. at West Mineral, Kans., in which jigs and tables are used. Many regrinds and recirculations of products are necessary to get a concentrate of uniform grade. Trends On the whole, the economics of recovering pyritc from coal is not favorable. Cer-

The distortion of crystal structures referred to as "biege gleitung",1 "local curvature"2-4 and "deformation bands"5,6 is believed to be an unavoidable characteristic of deformed single crystals. The presence of asterism on Laue photograms of Al single crystals either deformed by pure shear7 or extended in a condition relatively free from the grip effect2 indicates strong evidence substantiating this point of view. The type of localized bending described in connection with the bending test of Al single crystals by Yen and Hibbard8 could conceivably exist either microscopically or submicroscopically in all types of deformation. The purpose of this note is to extend this idea to the postulate of a hypothetical "microbending site," as applied to the mechanism of slip in a general sense. The mosiac structure, as postulated by Darwin,9 is that crystals were actually composed of small blocks which have a linear dimension 10—4to 10-6 cm on the edge and deviate from each other by an angle of about one-tenth of a degree. The following discussion is based on the assumption that when slip is propagated from one mosaic block to the adjacent one, bending of the lattice at the region of their boundary is produced in order to maintain the continuity of the gliding process along a certain slip plane. Consider a two-dimensional diagram of two ideal mosiac blocks on the cross-section perpendicular to the slip plane and containing the active direction of slip. When an external force is applied, the localized bending or "microbending site," would be generated at the region as illustrated in Fig 1A at point B. A schematic diagram of a "microbending site," generated at a mosaic boundary, is illustrated in Fig IB. It may be seen that once the curvature of the bending site reaches sufficient magnitude, the interaction force encountered by pairs of atoms symmetrical with respect to the center of the bending is equal but opposite in sign. Consequently, the overall energy required to displace the atoms near the center is approximately zero.10"12 Based upon the finding that the misalignment between two mosaics is 0.1 degree,9 the assumption is made that "microbending sites" may possibly exist in the region where one plane will have one more row of atoms than an adjacent plane. It is probable that the origin of the bending site will be where the distance between two mosaic boundaries is "2d" as shown in Fig 1A at point B, where " d" is the interatomic distance. Thus, the distance between two "microbending sites" is in the range of about 600 interplanar spacings. In the case of aluminum, the spacing between two octahedral planes is about 2.33 A. The distance between two bending sites will be approximately 2.5 X 10"5 cm. PRIMARY blasting at the open pit of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. has been developed to meet several conditions peculiar to the operation. Mining at Cananea is not confined to the open pit but is in conjunction with the underground mine which has been in operation for many years. Several old stopes included in the pit area were filled with waste obtained in stripping for the pit. The main haulage tunnel for the underground ore passes directly under one section of the pit and at present is but 180 ft below the pit floor. The pit as originally laid out called for an overall final pit limit slope of 60°. However, the upper 275 ft - a fairly soft oxidized capping, was carried at a 50° slope and the lower benches, which constitute 750 ft in combined height, are being mined to an over-all final slope of 60°.

The work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacional da Produggo Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operating practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being -expanded- and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining conditions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern Sao Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I) shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). IRON and copper are mined in the Lake Superior district. The iron mines of the district have the best safety record for that industry in the country as a whole, while the copper mines of the district rank second in two of the four years recorded (Table 1). In Utah copper comes mainly from open-pit mines, which enables that state to lead easily in safety. All of the Michigan production comes from deep underground workings. About 60 per cent of the iron miners in St. Louis County, Minnesota, are employed at open-pit mines; this favorably affects the combined open-pit and underground accident-frequency rate, as this county provides most of the Minnesota-mined iron ore. In Michigan, however, there are few open-pit mines, the bulk of the production coming from underground mines, while all of the Wisconsin production, just across the state line from Michigan, is from underground mines. In spite of the fact that fewer mines in Michigan use the safer open-pit method, the iron-mining industry of that state maintained a consistently low record from 1931 to 1934; however, it was many points behind its nearest competitor, Minnesota, with its much greater production from open-pit mines.

I HAVE been asked by the Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee to outline what the engineering colleges would like the mining companies to do with the young engineer just, out of college. It has been suggested that, because my own personal experience has been almost entirely within the coal industry, I handle this subject from that view- point. Many thoughtful engineering educators are today wondering what effect the present employment policies of many industrial companies are going to have on the young man just starting out in his profession. Since before the World War large industrial concerns, such as those in the electrical and mechanical industries, have gone to the colleges to interview &apos;likely graduates until today there has developed in most of our engineering colleges, especially in the eastern part of the country, what appears to be a lively competition on the part of these companies in bidding for the young graduate engineer. The employers of mining engineers, with one or two exceptions, have not yet begun to enter this competition. It remains to be seen how serious this situation will become, how it will affect the training of other engineers, and what effect, if any, it will have on the mind of the young man about to enter college who may be inclined to take up mining engineering, but who gains the impression from this well advertised employment service just mentioned that there is no opportunity for him in the mineral industry as com- pared with the opportunities offered in say civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

Introduction This paper describes a recent Bureau of Mines research project that resulted in a simple procedure for reducing the dust exposure of longwall shearer operators. This project involved the development and testing of a water spray and passive shield system to hold dust against the face and away from the shearer operators. This system is known as the Shearer- Clearer.

THE occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:¬ I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. IV. They have been found in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. I. BOULDERS AND PEBBLES WHICH HAVE BEEN WASHED IN FROM THE SURFACE, OR FROM AN UPPER PORTION OF THE VEIN. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at onetime com¬municated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoët, in France. INTRODUCTION Purpose The in-situ leach method for uranium extraction is a relatively new and innovative method of uranium mining. In 1975, the first commercial in-situ facility began operation in south Texas. Since that time numerous other operations have been initiated as either pilot or commercial ventures. Considerable literature has been published that deals primarily with generalities of the process or environmental concerns. Several federal agencies have published documents which do not reflect the true operating or environmental nature of the in-situ leach method of uranium extraction. From an environmental standpoint, this is also evident in the promulgation of rules and regulations. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to present experience with an environmental concern--non- production zone excursions--such that the industry and the regulatory agencies will gain greater insight devoid of preconceived ideas and misconceptions. General Process Description In south Texas, in-situ leach mining is utilized to extract uranium from permeable sandstone ore deposits 61 to 213 meters (200 to 700 feet) below the surface. Uranium is present as an insoluble uranium oxide. In the in-situ or solution mining technique, anoxidizing lixiviant is injected into the formation through injection wells. The solution reacts with the insol uble carbonate complex. This soluble uranium complex is produced at recovery wells, each containing a submersible pump. During production there is a constant sweeping of lixiviant through the formation from the injection wells to the recovery wells. Injection and recovery wells can be arranged in any of a number of geometric patterns dependent upon ore body configuration, aquifer permeability, and operator preference. Submersible pumps in the recovery wells pump the uranium rich pregnant solution to the initial processing facility. Monitor wells surrcsund the pattern area and are screened in appropriate stratigraphic horizons (production and non-production zones) to detect any lixiviant migration that may occur (Fig. 1).
