The term "differential flotation" is used to denote a flotation operation in which separation is effected between two or more minerals of the same class; e. g., lead sulfide from zinc sulfide, pyrite from blende, chalco-pyrite from pyrite, chalcopyrite from blende. At present, so far as published work shows, there seem to be two theories as to the mechanics of differential flotation. The earlier and more generally accepted theory is that the so-called depressing agents alter the surface of one or more of the sulfides in the ore, either by chemical action or adsorption, so that it is no longer amenable to flotation, but that these depressed sulfides can be revived, after the unaffected sulfide has been floated, by reagents which react chemically with the altered surface and make it amenable to flotation. More recently, Professor Taggartl has advanced the theory that slime adsorption is an important factor in differential flotation. He believes that, with the proper use of a class of agents, which he calls dispersion agents and which include practically all the depressing agents, one can cause the slime to adsorb differentially on sulfide surfaces. A gangue-slime coated sulfide surface will act as a gangue particle and will not float. If, subsequently, an agent that will remove the gangue-slime coating is added, the sulfide again assumes its original surface and can be floated as an ordinary sulfide. This is the basis of the slime theory of differential flotation. Timber Butte mill at Butte, Mont., is a typical lead-zinc flotation concentrator. Neihart ore, chosen for investigation in this work, is one of the custom ores treated at that mill. Practice at Timber Butte mill in February, 1928, was as follows: A combined lead-zinc concentrate was first made using 0.2 Ib. per ton on the ore of potassium xanthate and 0.03 lb. per ton of Cleveland Cliffs oil after 1.5 lb. per ton of lime and 1 lb. per ton of calcium chloride has been added just before the ball mill. The widespread interest in the alloys of beryllium with copper is due principally to the fact that certain compositions show very favorable precipitation-hardening characteristics and are, in fact, the stronges nonferrous alloys known at the present time. Investigations have been conducted by Masing and Dahl and others on the physical characteristics of ternary beryllium alloys, in an attempt to produce precipitation hardening effects with a smaller amount of beryllium than that required in the binary copper-beryllium alloys (2.0 to 2.5 per cent Be). The results of these investigations show that ternary alloys of beryllium with Cu-Sn, Cu-A1 and Cu-Zn, among others, exhibit promising improrcmc~nts in physical properties after precipitation-hardening treatment and, while the increases in properties obtained are not as high as those reahzed from the binary copper-beryllium alloys, excellent properties arc obtaincd with beryllium contents averagirlg about one-half the amount reqnired in the binary alloys. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the equilibriun relations of certain alloys containing copper, tin and beryllium. The alpha-phase boundary of the ternary system is given for alloys containing from 0 to 1 per cent beryllium. The equilibrium conditions beyond the alpha-phase boundary are presented for alloys containing up to 32 per cent tin and 1 per cent beryllium. The treatment of the residues from the manufacture of sulphuric acid which contain small amounts of copper, silver and gold, has attracted considerable attention in Europe. They are successfully treated in several works on the continent, and in as many as twenty establishments in different parts of England. As the process must sooner or later attract attention in this country, I have put together my notes made in three of the most important establishments in Europe. These are the works at Hemixem near Antwerp, of Duisbourg in Westphalia, and of Oker in the Hartz. In the last works only, the ores are produced in the vicinity of the place where they are treated. The works at Duisbourg treat ores which come from the Rio Tinto mines in Spain, which often contain considerable quantities of arsenic. They are roasted in a number of different works along the Rhine for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. They are brought by boat and are landed at the works by steam-cranes. They are carried at once by a double-inclined plane worked by steam to the storagehouses to be kept, until treated. The wagons, after being weighed, are dumped. The ore is assayed at once, the assay-sample being taken from the boat while the ores are being discharged. They are all fine, and contain two to eight per cent. of copper and about sixty per cent. of iron, and a small amount of silver and gold. Their average composition is given below:

Heats of high purity iron containing 3.1 pct Si and be -tween 0.0003 and 0.0295 pct N were prepared by vacuum melting ad then pouring while in a nitrogen atmosphere with the pressure between 0 and 90 psi. Strip from a heat with 0.0184 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization during the final anneal. Heats with less nitrogen had too few Si3N4 particles to restrain normal grain growth, and the heat with higher nitrogen had too many particles to allow complete secondary recrystallization. In the hot-rolled structure, Si3N4 precipitates only at the grain boundaries, with the consequence that annealing after hot-rolling diminishes the ability to subsequently undergo secondary recrystallization. In contrast to this behavior, ALNprecipitates uniformly in the hot-rolled structure. Under 1 atm of nitrogen, Si3N, in 3.1 pct Si-Fe dissociates between 900" and 950°C; the solubility of nitrogen increases from 0.0010 pct at 900" to 0.0030 pct at 1200°C. The solubility of nitrogen in Si-Fe has been the subject of many investigations. Corney and Turkdogan1 heated a 2.83 pct Si alloy in nitrogen and found the solubility, under 1 atrn of nitrogen, to be 0.0019 pct at 900°C. They claimed that Si3N4 did not form in the alloy above 705°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Fryxell et al.2 heated samples of 3.25 pct Si-Fe containing 0.0025 pct N over a range of temperatures and then analyzed for total nitrogen by vacuum fusion and for nitrogen in solution by a modified Kjeldahl technique. At 900°C, they reported the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with Si3N4 to be 0.0011 pct. pearce9 found the solubility of nitrogen at 900°C under 0.95 atrn of nitrogen to be 0.0017 pct in a 3.06 pct Si alloy. He reported that Si3N4 does not form above 770°C in 1 atrn of nitrogen. Although internal friction measurements have given somewhat higher values for the solubility,4-6 if the solubility of nitrogen is as low as has been reported by most investigators, and if Si3N4 is stable up to at least 945°C at 1 atrn pressure of nitrogen as reported by Seybolt,7 a small amount of nitrogen in properly processed Si-Fe should be effective in promoting secondary recrystallization. The requirement is that in the final heat treatment there be enough small, well-dispersed particles of Si3N4 to restrain normal grain growth. Fast8 has obtained secondary recrystallization by nitriding high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe after hot-rolling to a thickness of 0.118 in., followed by processing to 0.012 in., and annealing. A large amount of nitrogen, 0.076 pct. was introduced during the nitriding heat treatment, but he has since reported9 that "a few hundredths of a percent" is sufficient. Small amounts of aluminum10 or vanadium" nitride are capable of promoting secondary recrystallization. Heats containing as little as 0.010 pct A1 or 0.042 pct V and from 0.006 to 0.009 pct N underwent complete secondary recrystallization at final gage, whereas heats with lesser amounts of aluminum or vanadium did not.l2 To be reported is the behavior of nitrogen in high-purity 3.1 pct Si-Fe, and the relation of this behavior to the ability to undergo secondary recrystallization. PROCEDURE Ingots weighing 1 lb were made by vacuum melting high-purity electrolytic iron (A104, Glidden Co.) and high-purity silicon (Monsanto Co.). The latter was used in preference to ferrosilicon to insure a low aluminum content. The design of the melting furnace permitted pouring with the furnace atmosphere either below or above atmospheric pressure. Accordingly, at the completion of melting, nitrogen was admitted to the desired pressure and the heat then immediately poured. The ingots were sound, with no indication of porosity. In Table I are listed the heats investigated, the nitrogen pressure at pour, and the nitrogen and oxygen contents as determined by vacuum fusion with a platinum bath at 1850°C, a procedure which insures measurement of the total nitrogen.13 In addition, all heats contained 3.1 pct Si and not more than 0.002 pct C, 0.003 pct S or 0.005 pct Al. It was subsequently found that the quantity of nitrogen contained in the heats in Table I does not necessarily represent that obtained under equilibrium conditions. For example, the ingot poured immediately after 1 atrn of nitrogen was admitted to the chamber contained 0.0093 pct N, whereas an ingot poured 3 min after the nitrogen was admitted contained 0.021 pct N and another poured after a 6-min delay contained 0.029 pct N. While some bleeding of the hot top occurred in the latter instance, the ingot when examined in cross section appeared sound. The ingots were heated to 1325°C in hydrogen and rapidly rolled to 0.080 in. in 3 passes. The roll speed of the final pass was reduced so as to increase the quenching effect of the rolls. The hot-rolled pieces were processed both as-hot-rolled and after heating for 3 min at 900°C in hydrogen. After cold-rolling to 0.026 in., the strips were heated for 2 min at 900°C in hydrogen, then cold-rolled to the final gage of 0.012 in. A full scale field experiment on cathodic protection of casing answers questions concerning (1) the proper criteria for determining current requirments, (2) the amount of protection provided by different currents, and (3) the transfer of current at the base of the surface pipe. Three dry holes in the Trico pool in Rooks County, Kans., were selected for cathodic protection tests. The three holes were in an area where casing failures opposite the Dakota water sand often accur in less than a year. Examination of the electric togs showed the wells to be similar to other wells in the field where casing in four of seven producing wells has failed. The three holes were cleaned out and cased with 75 joints of new 51/2-in. 14-tb J-55. Each joint was visually inspected and marked before it as run. The casing was bull plugged and floated in the hole 50 that the inside might remain dry and free of excessive attack. Also, if a leak occurred, a pressure increase could be observed on gawge at the surface. Extensive testing was done, including potential profiles, log current-potentid curves and electrode measurements from both surface and downhole connections. Based on these data, a current of 12 amps was applied to one well and 4 amps to mother. The third well was left to corrode. During the two-year period when the casing was in the ground, [he applied current was checked weekly, and reference electrode measurements were made about every two months. Three sets of casing potential profi1e.c were run. When the three strings were pulled, each joint was examined for type of scale formed, presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria, extent of corrosion nttnck and pit depth. Since the pipe was new when run, quantitative determination of the protection provided by current was possible. This is the first concrete field evidence to help resolve the many arguments about the proper method for selecting adequate current for cathodic protection of oilwell (-using. INTRODUCTION A casing string is run when a well is drilled. This pipe is supposed to protect this valuable "hole in the ground" for the life of the well. Often the casing does not last the life of the well; it is with these casing failures that this work is concerned. The cost of repairing a casing failure varies from field to field—from as much as a $30,000 per leak average in California to $5,000 per leak in Kansas. Additional costs other than actual repairs are also important. These include formation damage, lost production, etc. Casing damage caused by internal corrosion is important in some areas. Treatment normally consists of flushing inhibitor down the annulus, but further research is being done on control measures. The test described in this paper is concerned only with external corrosion. The problem of casing failure from external attack has appeared in several areas including western Kansas, California, Montana, Wyoming, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi. Cathodic protection is currently being used in an attempt to control external corrosion. From reports in the NACE there are thousands of wells currently under cathodic protection. The quantity of current being applied ranges from 27 amps on some deep California wells to a few tenths of an amp being supplied from magnesium anodes on wells in Texas and Kansas. Considerable field and laboratory effort1,9,5,6 was exented on the problem of cathodic prctection of casing, and it became fairly obvious that this method could be used to protect wells. Early workers showed that current applied to a well distributed itself over the length of the casing and was not concentrated on the upper few hundred feet. Basic cathodic protection theory had shown that corrosion attack could be stopped by applying sufficient current. The problem resolved itself, then, into one of trying to decide just how much current was necessary. Various criteria were utilized in installing the many existing cathodic protection installations. These methods included the following. 1. Applying sufficient current to remove the anodic slope as shown by the potential profile." 7. Applying enough current to maintain all areas of the casing at a pipe-to-soil potential of .85 v.' 3. Applying the current indicated by a log current-potential (or E log I) curve." 4. Supplying the current necessary to shift the pipe to-soil potential .3 v." 5. Applying 2 or 3 milliamps of current per sq ft of casing."

The diffusion rates of Ag110 in cylindrical single crystals of 99.99 pct pure silver, which were twisted to a total surface strain of 0.91 during the diffusion anneal at temperatures of 700°, 750°, and 800°C, were measured by sectioning and counting as a function of the strain rates. The ratio of the diffusivities while strain ing occurred (Ds) to those of the unstrained specimens varies linearly with the rate of twisting and attains values of near 100 for some of the rates used. The enhancement of diffusion by straining is inversely proportional to the temperature at which diffusion occurs. The activation energy for diffusion determined from the data plotted as a function of the rate of twisting decreases from 44,090 cal per mole for zero strain, to an asymptotic value of 21,000 cal per mole for the strain rates of 22 x it)"5 see-l. Qualitative explanation for the observations based on the generation of nonequilibrium number of defects by plastic deformation will be discussed. The initial research of Buffington and cohen1 on self-diffusion in a iron under compressive stresses contributed the first quantitative information concerning the effect of applied stresses on diffusion. These results were obtained from radioactive Fe55 plated on one of the horizontal surfaces and compressing the large-grained specimens while the diffusion-anneal was occurring. Enhancement of diffusion of a maximum of seventeen times was observed provided the strain was in the tertiary stage of creep and the rates of straining were at least as fast as rates used in the normal creep test. On the other hand, Darby, Tomizuka, and Balluffi,2 extending silver single crystals up to 30 pct elongation at rates of straining about equal to those used by Buffington and Cohen observed no effect. For the past two and a half years at the University of Pennsylvania, we have been investigating the effect or torsional strains on self-diffusion in silver single crystals. If enhancement is observed as has been reported1 a possible explanation may be based upon the generation of fairly large numbers of point defects and their role in the diffusion process. Hence, since torsion should produce an abundance3 of point defects, an increase in the diffusivity while the crystal is being twisted should easily be measured. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Our research uses single crystals of silver prepared from 99.99 Ag by the Bridgman method in a dynamic vacuum of less than 25 µ. As grown, they are about 25 cm long by 1.3 cm in diam. The crystals are cut into 7.5 cm lengths with a jeweler's saw and machined to the shape shown in Fig. 1. The test length of the crystal is machined to a 0.6 cm diam after which the ends are masked and the test section etched heavily in HNO3, and KCN:(NH4),S2Os , solution to remove the effects of machining. The specimen is then annealed in vacuum for 8 to 12 hr at 800°C to remove any residual stresses and also to recrystallize the end sections. The recrystallized ends are necessary since experiments showed that single-crystalline end sections are too soft to transmit the desired torque. Occasionally, recrystalliza-

Earlier work revealed that small amounts of silver (< 0,l at. pct) may exert a marked effect on the structure and aging characteristics of certain a1loys based on the Al-Zn-Mg system. Silver additions have now been made to other age-hardening aluminum alloys, and significant effects have been observed in the Al-Mg system and in several Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Mg-Si alloys. Similarities exist between the behavior of alloys from all four systems, notably that in each case silver stimulates nucleation of an intermediate precipitate which forms when the alloys are aged in the medium temperature range (-120" to 220°C). The mechanism for this effect is uncer- IT has been shown that small additions of silver (<0.1 at. pct) may have a marked effect on the structure and age-hardening characteristics of tain although it is suggested it originates in a preferred affinity between magnesium and silver atoms. There is evidence to indicate that the effects of silver are unique to that element. It is suggested that silver atoms interact with vacancies during low-temperature aging of Al-4 pct Cu and certain Al-Cu-Mg alloys. Silver had little effect on Al-8 pct Zn aged at any temperature. Preliminary observations indicate that silver may have interesting effects on the strength properties of Al-Mg alloys, md a the commercial Al-Cu-Mg alloys designated as 2024 and 2618. many alloys based on the Al-Zn-Mg* system.1"&apos;*

It has been customary at our opening sessions, for the presiding officer to address you on the general development of one or another of our several professions, or upon some important feature of Mining or Metallurgical Engineering. It is somewhat embarrassing to his successor that our former President, Dr. Raymond, expert as he is in every one of these professions, has been accustomed to keep them all, in their turn, prominently before yon. In selecting for this occasion a subject necessarily connected with iron and steel, I have thought that a review of these manufactures, with reference to some of their more pressing needs for improvement, will be more timely than a general or statistical paper. I shall endeavor to confine my remarks to a few specific defects of practice and management, and to their equally specific and more or less developed remedies. That serious defects exist; that they must be remedied ; that the manufacture is indeed already on the verge of transition, will be generally admitted. But it cannot be revolutionized all at once, however desirable the technical results might he, for that would bankrupt the business at large. We cannot afford to pull down and rebuild all our blast-furnaces that do not make a ton of pig iron with 25 cwt. of fuel; nor to replace all our hand-puddling furnaces with revolving ones, even if we could select the best revolver. Although the soft steels promise to supplant iron for most structural purposes, there are neither money nor present market to warrant all at once replacing our iron works, or half of them, with steel works. Since, then, these manufactures can neither stand still nor be suddenly metamorphosed, their managers are saying to one another: " We must feel our way into larger development; we must work gradually into better practice; we must improve a little at a time."

Chlorination is frequently employed as a method of chemical attack and separation of the constituents of minerals. Occasionally, bromination has been used similarly. Separation of metal halides resulting from the use of either of these halogens generally entails difficult fractional distillation of the halides. Recovery of the halogens for re-use has often been attempted in the case of chlorine by oxidation of chlorides. Though attractive thermodynamically, this method of recovery fails due to the formation of stable oxychlorides. Although a little less reactive than either chlorine or bromine, iodine offers advantages in the field of mineral treatment. It has been shown, for example, that iron may be removed completely from ilmenite by iodinating the latter in the presence of carbon or hydrogen at temperatures near 800°c where good reaction rates are obtained. Under these conditions titanium does not form an iodide and is not transported in the vapour phase as is the Fe12 formed. Other good separations obtained between zinc and iron in willemite and tin and tungsten in scheelite concentrates confirm that separations of metal iodides by sublimation are more specific than similar separations attempted by distillation of volatile chlorides. Readiness of iodides to form stable vapour-phase complexes appears to contribute to this specificity. The very low stabilities of most metal oxyiodides permit quantitative recovery of iodine by oxidation of metal iodides. In the case of Fe12 derived from iodination of ilmenite, full recovery of iodine can be achieved by air oxidation of this compound at temperatures ranging from 350 to 500° C.

The instrumentation, monitoring, and prediction of a major slope failure at the Chuquicamata mine are described. In December 1967, preexisting tension cracks on the south end of the east wall of the mine began to open. Various forms of instru¬mentation were installed for continuous monitoring. These systems included tension crack stakes, crack extensometers, linear extensometers, tape and transit lines, sliding wire contacts, and a seismograph. From the information obtained, the failure date was accurately predicted some five weeks before failure, enabling the mine to reroute truck and rail access; hence, causing a minimal mine shutdown of 21/2 days and preventing any injuries to person or damage to equipment. The shape and form of the sliding mass are analyzed, as are possible modes of failure.

The base bullion from the lead blast furnace contains varying amounts of the impurities left in the smelter feed by the concentrator, regardless of the method of smelter operation. These impurities may be held in part in mechanical suspension rather than being present as true alloys. However, usually there is little free space in the crucible in which to separate these drosses before the bullion is taken from the lead well. When such a dross is melted in a laboratory crucible and allowed to cool, the products obtained are lead bullion, speiss, and matte in well separated layers. Typical analyses of layers are: Analyses. In general, the drosses made locally are metal sulphides and arsenides and not oxidized compounds. The large content of metallic lead also does not seem to be retained because of oxidized compounds

In August 1957, a cutter suction dredge started the removal of overburden from a bauxite deposit near Paranam, Surinam (formerly Dutch Guiana), South America. This event marked the climax of a program of investigation, design and construction which lasted almost five years. Cutter-suction dredges are used predominantly for harbor and river work, and land reclamation. While they have been utilized to remove overburden from ore bodies, notably at Steep Rock, Ontario, and Black Lake, Quebec, the conditions under which one is being used for this purpose in Surinam are unusual. Paranam is a mining town built by Suriname Aluminum Company, a subsidiary of Aluminum Company of America. It is located on the Surinam River, about 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The bauxite mining, drying and shiploading facilities have been in operation since 1941.

Prof. Edward Orton, in his Report on the Occurrence of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Asphalt Rock in Western Kentucky, thus clearly states his ideas of the universal dissemination and rare accumulations of the bitumens:I "We need to bear in mind that the various members &apos;of the bituminous series are abundantly and almost universally distributed among the unaltered sedimentary rocks of the earth&apos;s crust. The valuable accumulations of these substances are rare, it is true, but one can scarcely go amiss&apos; of petroleum, asphalt or gas, at least in small quantities, among the stratified rocks that retain their original structure." Speaking of the Ohio valley, he adds: "A fifth of one per cent. of petroleum, if distributed through a thousand feet of rock, would make a total to the acre, or square mile far beyond any production that has ever been realized from the richest oil field, and -percentages of this amount are not only not rare to find, but are even hard to miss." Dr. F. W Clarke in his Data of Geochemistry (Bulletin No. 491, U. S. Geological Survey, 1911), discussing these views of Orton with similar views of T. Sterry Hunt and Szajnocha, says that they "lead to the conviction that the formation of bitumens is a general process and by no means exceptional. Wherever sediments are laid down, inclosing either animal or vegetable matter, there bitumens may be produced." As an example of nonmetallic mineral flotation, the separation of several pegmatite minerals will be discussed in considerable detail, from both the laboratory-testing and plant-operation standpoints. The pegmatites have been chosen to illustrate the practicality of the selective separations of the minerals in a complex nonmetallic ore and, in so doing, to set forth a summation of the flotation art and technology which is applicable in part to the beneficiation of several less complex nonmetallic ores. In addition, a brief summary of descriptions of other nonnietallic mineral flowsheets and separations is included. Some of the industrial minerals now being concentrated by froth flotation methods commercially, or in the laboratory, are listed in Table 1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS There are two classes of chemicals that are normally utilized as collectors in froth flotation separations of nonmetallic minerals. These are defined as anionic and cationic and are typified by the fatty acids and amines, respectively. The fatty acids are selective to those minerals that have a high concentration of positive surface charges, such as the various calcium minerals typified by calcite, phosphate rock, and fluorspar. The amines are selective to those minerals with a high concentration of negative surface charges, such as silica sand and silicates. It should be noted, however, that by using various inorganic chemicals, a new or synthetic surface can be placed on specific minerals which produces different characteristics, thereby reversing the flotation reagent required for separation. The polar end of the collector attaches to the mineral surface either by chemical or physical adsorption; the nonpolar unreactive end is oriented away from the mineral surface. The result is a hydrophobic coating at the mineral surface which causes attachment to air bubbles. It is this surface condition that permits the floating of minerals which normally sink in water. A technique is described whereby the study of crystal perfection through the use of conventional X-ray rockite curves is extended to three dimerzsions. Specinzens of unidirectionally solidified eutec-tic alloy which consist of a nearly perfect parallel arrangement of alternating Platelets of Al and CuAl2, but which contain lamellar faults have been analyzed by this technique in conjunction with X-ray microscopy. Analysis of the data has shown that some rotational symmetry about the growth direction occurs, that small groups of lamellae between faults diffract as a unit, and that the misorientation caused by a fault is on the order of a degree of arc. A eutectic-grain can be defined as that portion of a eutectic specimen in which the crystallographic orientation of each phase AND the microscopic or met-allographic orientation of the phase particles have fixed angular relationships one to another. Eutectic-grains of the A1-CuA12 eutectic, which is a normal lamellar eutectic, have been grown by unidirectional solidification and identified as such.1-3 To a first approximation, a eutectic-grain in this system consists of two interpenetrating single crystals which are related to each other and to the lamellae themselves as follows:
