FMC Gold's Paradise Peak Mine was one of the top two producers of mercury metal in North America in 1988 and 1989. As a by-product, elemental mercury is produced from cyanide soluble mercury minerals, primarily to reduce the health risks incurred with the refining of precious metal precipitate containing elemental mercury and mercury amalgams. A discussion of the design, primarily the Merrill-Crowe units, and permitting for the safe production of mercury will be presented. Additionally, laboratory testwork to determine the effect of mercury on reagent requirements in the Merrill-Crowe process will be discussed.

From comments and questions concerning the meaning of USNR, and "why is the Navy in the mining business?" I believe it is worth while to establish the background and purpose of our company. We are a stock company formed by the purchase and reorganization of a company known as the U. S. Natural Gas Corporation. In May 1969, a group of investors with Mr. Robert L. Katz as president and chief executive officer, created United States Natural Resources, Inc., to develop and purposively use our Natural Resources in four areas: 1. Mines and Minerals 2. Forest Products 3. oil and Gas 4. Recreational Lands As final proof that we are not a government organization, I simply state. "We pay taxes." The mining division was formed in October 1969, with the completion of the merger of USNR and Vibration Measurement Engineers, Inc., Of Evanston, Illinois. Throughout the industry we were known as "VME," our company supplied consulting service in the field of seismic energy control, mining consulting and. we operated drilling, blasting and, contracting organizations in several areas of the country. Since that time we have developed and acquired producing properties in Quarrying, Coal Mining and Cement Copper Production.

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. This paper reports on the first 2 years in operation of a special-purpose coal handling rig which provides blending, temperature reduction, and continuous, automatic mechanical sampling as part of midstream barge to ship coal transfers. Briefly reviewing some of the characteristics of coal handling peculiar to midstream transfers, the paper discusses how the most beneficial aspects of midstreaming were enhanced through the design of this blending and sampling rig.

This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC, and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room and pillar mining section. The purpose of presenting the information is to prepare mine operators for proposed legislation that will require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Specifically, machine modifications are required to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers. Cable splicing is not as complex as expected but additional materials are needed in the kit and splice training is necessary. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce the hazard of electrical shock to mine workers. This paper will present information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems that will be encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

Oil based drilling fluids utilize a number of industrial mineral products to accomplish oil and gas drilling in several environments where water based drilling fluids are less effective or inappropriate. These industrial minerals include: organically modified bentonite, organically modified lignite, barite, hematite, mica, calcium chloride and other salts. A variety of organic products are also utilized in oil based drilling fluid formulations. Oil based drilling fluids are preferred in several drilling situations because: they can be used to drill through water sensitive formations; they produce holes that are very close to the drill bit gauge; they exhibit high temperature stability; they are more environmentally acceptable; they minimize producing formation damage; they provide faster drilling rates when used with new polycrystalline diamond drill bits; they minimize pipe sticking and lost rig time.

Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

TRANSPORTATION TUNNELING The use of tunnels for transportation, namely rapid rail transit systems and highways is on the increase. How much that increase might be through the 1980's is the question that is discussed in this paper. In 1975, there were 218 route miles of subway tunnels for rapid rail transit and 154 lane-miles of highway tunnel. From the viewpoint of many transportation planners and designers, the tunnel is one of the tools which may be used to by-pass many types of obstacles: a mountain, a body of water, or a Central Business District (CBD). Therefore, the transportation tunnel is a rural as well as an urban solution with major emphasis on the latter because of the current transportation needs of our cities. In the case of rural locations, tunnels are usually constructed through mountains in order to eliminate miles of steep grades and dangerous curves, such as the Eisenhower Tunnel which cuts through the Continental Divide in Colorado along 1-70 and saves 10 miles and 40 minutes of driving time. Tunnels also provide an excellent transportation link across bodies of water in order not to interfere with shipping lanes. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bay Tubes of the BART system are excellent examples of this type of tunnel.

This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comminution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville's 5.5x6.4-m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790:1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.

This new tool can be used for the proper assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type "go or no go" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break-even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes (weakest link concept). Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine project, an oil sands mine project and a poly-metallic open pit project.

"Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

The lithologic, mineralogic, and magnetic beneficiation characteristics of the iron formation at U. S. Steel's Atlantic City Ore Mine, Fremont County, Wyoming, have been determined. The iron formation averages about 30 percent Fe content, and varies from 125 feet to about 500 feet in thickness. It is composed of interbedded magnetite-rich quartzites, magnetite-quartz-amphibole schists, and amphibole-chlorite schists. Quartz, actinolite-tremolite, chlorite, and magnetite are the essential mineral constituents. These rocks are differentiated into four major ore types on the basis of their relative quartz and amphibole content. The iron content of the magnetic concentrate decreases and the silica content increases with decreasing grain size and increasing amphibole content in each ore type at the same fineness of grind. Criteria were developed to enable the mine operator to recognize the ore types and to blend them to produce a more uniform concentrator feed. This results in less variation in product quality and requires fewer changes in operating conditions-in the concentrator.

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

Rouez is a recent discovery of a major low-grade sulfide body (± 100 m, 0,6 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb, 1 ,5 % Zn, 21 g/t Ag, 1.5 g/t Au) in a populated farming area of Brittany, France, some 30 kilometres northwest of Le Mans. The discovery is the result of an airborne electro- magnetic (INPUT) survey. It is the first time that the INPUT method has been used in France. The survey Gas successful in spite of the numerous interferences normally found in populated areas. The lack of a good drainage system would not allow the discovery of Rouez using stream sediment geochemistry alone. Ground geophysical surveys confirmed the airborne work and gave sufficient information to make the first hole a discovery hole. The deposit is Proterozoic in age and sediment-hosted. The metamorphism is low grade.

In conventional dump leaching of porphyry mine strip wastes, many years are required to extract up to 20 percent of the copper from the contained sulfide minerals. Furthermore, none of the molybdenum, gold, or silver in the strip wastes is recovered by current leaching practices. Because mineralization occurs predominately along fracture planes, breaking of the rock during mining operations liberates and concentrates some of the metal values in the fines. Research shows that upgraded fines can be screened from mine wastes and froth floated for early recovery of copper, molybdenum, gold, and silver. For example, screening a dump sample assaying 0.35 percent copper as chalcopyrite removed about 20 percent of the copper as minus 1/4-inch material that analyzed 0.6 percent copper. About 35 percent of the molybdenum and 20 percent of the gold and silver also reported in the fines. Crushing the mine dump sample to minus 3 inch before screening increased the distribution of copper and molybdenum in the minus 1/4-inch screen fraction to 28 and 50 percent, respectively. Similar results were obtained by screening fines from two other large samples of mine waste dump materials. Flotation studies established that the enriched minus 1/4-inch fines from the three dump samples could be effectively concentrated. Comparative testing revealed that the combination of froth flotation of fines and acid-ferric sulfate leaching of the coarser fraction enabled doubling the recovery of copper over direct leaching of the samples. In addition, significant amounts of molybdenum, gold, arid silver were recovered by flotation.

Evaporite units of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin are known to host native sulfur. In British Columbia, a large number of oil and gas exploration drilling holes reported intersections with native sulfur. The most important ones include 6 meters (20 feet) and 27 meters (90 feet) of native sulfur among 23 occurrences in Devonian Muskeg evaporite or adjacent Slave Point reef facies carbonates. A small Frasch sulfur deposit is known from Devonian Wabamun Group sediments near Camrose in South Central Alberta. Occurrences of native sulfur are common also in association with presently mined gypsum of Devonian Burnais Formation in southeastern British Columbia. Triassic sediments with evaporite members in British Columbia are also known to contain native sulfur showings. A widespread presence of anhydrite in many sedimentary units of Alberta and British Columbia together with oil and gas fields in the same areas and associated native sulfur occurrences point to a possibility for Frasch sulfur deposits in this part of western Canada.

A novel special magnetic separator was developed based on the special properties of precious metal-bearing alloy in highgrade nickel matte. The recovery of Au, Pt, and Pd was 77.79%, 84.79%, and 81.79% respectively at optimum operation conditions of magnetic separator feed of 2.5t/h, pulp density of 45%, and flush water of 1.5t/h, and the recovery significantly improved comparing with normal magnetic separator. Magnetic field simulation of the special magnetic separator indicates that magnetic intensity of 0.6 T can be generated on the surface of magnetic drum, which can strengthen the recovery of heavy alloy that contains precious metals. The alternate strong and weak magnetic field can also make magnetic particles rolling on the surface of drum, which will reduce the generation of magnetic agglomeration to a large extent and decrease the content of impurities in magnetic concentrate.

Explosives are probably the most widely used and most mysterious large scale' mining tools of modern times. The post black powder explosives were primarily nitroglycerin-based straight dynamites, ammonia dynamites, blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamites, ammonia gelatin dynamites, etc. Of these, the strongest and highest velocity explosive used in industrial operations is blasting gelatin, which is nitroglycerin colloided with a nitrocellulose of medium nitrogen content in proportions which give the product a plastic character, or about 93 to 7. Many variations of the basic groups above were developed by substituting ammonium nitrate and/or sodium nitrate for some of the nitroglycerin. The nitrates being insensitive to caps required a certain percentage of nitroglycerin to sustain detonation in smaller quantities or diameters. Paralleling the development of industrial dynamites was the development of more expensive, highly sophisticated explosives which were developed for specific military purposes. Such explosives as Amatol, RDX, Composition A, Composition B, Composition C, Lead Azide, PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate), Tetryl, Pentolite, TNT, etc., were primarily military explosives. Amatol, which is a cast mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT (Trinitrotoluene), and identified by percentage of AN versus TNT as 50-50 Amatol, 80-20 Amatol, etc., was a favorite World War I explosive. RDX, or Cyclonite, was widely used in World War II. Also used during WW II were compositions A. B, and C, which were mixtures of RDX (Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine), TNT, and other nitrotoluenes. These high explosives, along with nitroglycerine, are exact chemical compositions or mixtures of exact chemical compositions which are individually explosive, or in other words, individually capable of explosive chemical decomposition when properly initiated. These chemical decompositions result in the formation of simpler compounds and/or large quantities of common combustion gases, and large amounts of energy in the form of heat. Of these, the most powerful is RDX which, based on the ballistic mortor test, is 1.5 times as powerful as TNT. Chemically, the decomposition of TNT releases about as much energy as the reaction of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.

In 1986 the city of Johannesburg celebrates its first century of existence. The fact that the city was founded to exploit the gold deposits which underlaid it, prompts this review of the gold process development in the mining industry of South Africa. Clearly a complete history of, the gold recovery process to date is not called for and it is proposed therefore to outline the most significant developments which have taken place since the middle 1930's, that is to say the last 50 years or so. Prior to this period the industry had seen the development of comminution processes employing cone crushing in closed circuit with vibrating screens followed by grinding in rotating mills and the gradual disappearance of stamp mills. The all sliming process was well established as a viable route and continuous dewatering in thickeners, continuous leaching and filtration were serious rivals for the earlier batch processes. Continuous processes for gravity concentration had also been developed and the recovery of gold from pregnant solutions employed cementation on zinc dust as opposed to shavings. Thus at the beginning of the half century under review the industry had adopted, or started to adopt, many of the processes still accepted as modern practice. However in some areas little change was evident this was especially so in the smelthouse where some thirty more years were to elapse before the hand stoked coal fired calcine and reverbatory furnaces were replaced by more environmentally acceptable electric furnaces. The most significant feature in recent history has been the mining of progressively lower grades of ore and the retreatment of tailings from earlier operations, much of the latter comprising tailings only a decade or even less in age. Notable among these operations are those on the East Rand near Springs in the Transvaal, in the Orange Free State at Welkom and more recently, massive reclamation of tailings close to the city centre itself. The carbon in pulp (CIP) process has been much publicised in recent years and all new plants erected during the 1980's have adopted this route for gold recovery. However the major proportion of tonnage milled in the industry is still subjected to the more traditional process of liquid solids separation by vacuum filtration. The Red Dog Operation is located in northwestern Alaska at Latitude 68°, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The orebody was acquired by the NANA Regional Corporation, (an Alaska Native Corporation established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971), in 1980 in their land selection. In 1982 Cominco American and the NANA Corporation signed a development agreement and Cominco Alaska Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, was formed to manage the Red Dog Project. An extensive exploration program in 1980 -1982 outlined a mineral inventory of 85 million tons, at a grade of 5.2% Pb, 17.1 % Zn, and 2.4 oz/ton Ag, which makes the Red Dog the second largest deposit ever discovered. Broken Hill, in Australia, is the only zinc orebody which was originally larger than Red Dog. The design of the facilities is to process 2.1 million tons of ore annually, which will produce 560,000 tons of zinc concentrate, 100,000 tons of lead concentrate and 50,000 tons of bulk lead/zinc concentrate.
