Frequently ore reserve studies utilize samples from a series of drilling or other types of sampling campaigns. Sometimes there is a mix of sample types, say for instance, channel samples from underground workings and drill core from surface drilling. Since drilling, sampling, logging, and sample preparation protocols tend to change over time, there is always a question whether the samples give similar results that vary only by chance alone. The problem of comparing the various campaigns is complicated by the presence of spatial relationships among the samples. Geostatistical tests take the spatial correlation into account, but these tests may be complicated and cumbersome to implement. A comparison method based on familiar statistical graphics is presented which accounts for the spatial relationships. It allows comparisons to be made quickly by using simple statistical graphs such as scatterplots and boxplots.

Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's (H. B. M. & S.) Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for over 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars", left between them. These pillars range up to 100 meters long by 40 meters wide and 15 meters thick. H. B. M. & S. has been successful in removing these pillars through the use of cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel LHD equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has meant that many innovative techniques have been tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined.

The Finniss River system in tropical northern Australia has received 'acid-drainage' contaminants from the Rum Jungle uranium/copper mine site over the past 4 decades. Following mine-site remediation that began in 1981-82 the annual contaminant loads of sulfate, Cu, Zn and Mn have declined by factors of 3, 7, 5 and 4, respectively over 1990-93, compared to the 1969-74 pre-remediation loads. Comparison of the frequency distributions of contaminant water concentrations over these pre- and post-remedial periods have shown varying degrees of reduction in the highest levels following mine-site remediation, that are consistent with reductions in their annual-cycle loads. Among the three selected major metal contaminants the reductions in maximum water concentrations are most pronounced for Cu. The demonstrated reductions in the highest water concentrations of all four contaminants are also associated with previously reported ecological improvement in the Finniss River system, compared to the benchmark of environmental detriment established in 1973fl4, prior to the beginning of remediation at the mine site.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). While silica ores are generally considered to have little value, those with exceptionally low B and P content have, potentially, significant worth if processed for use in photovoltaics. The sales value of a cubic meter of ?run of the mill? silica sand is $42 per cubic meter (retail and delivered). If the silica sand can be used to produce solar silicon, its value after processing is $34,000 per cubic meter. Factors that impact the suitability of silica for direct processing in production of photovoltaics are examined.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process to remove pyritic sulfur from fine- size coal is described. The process consists of a first-stage, standard coal flotation step in which high-ash refuse and some of the pyrite are removed as tailings. The first-stage clean coal froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and a coal depressant, a pyrite collector, and a frother are added to float the remaining pyritic material. Laboratory and pilot plant flotation results with coals from the Lower Freeport and Pittsburgh beds are given. The pilot plant test results show that up to 80 percent pyritic sulfur reduction was achieved with the Lower Freeport bed coal and up to 50 percent with the Pittsburgh bed coal. Laboratory and pilot plant results were in excellent agreement, indicating that the process is a viable means of removing much of the sulfur from some coals.

"While coal fueling China's economic growth it has already been causing severe pollution and amounts of CO2 emission. How to make deep reductions in carbon emission is not only a huge challenge for the greatest consumer of coal, but also a revolution for China’s coal industry. The paper explores how to shrink CO2 emissions during the lifetime of coal. The paper points out that increase of coal mine efficiency and productivity, green mining, utilization of coal mine methane and environment-friendly disposal of coal gangue can reduce CO2 during coal mining; coal preparation and coal by wire can decrease CO2 during coal preparation and transportation; improving combustion efficiency, CO2 capture and storage (CCS) and coal transformation can lessen CO2 during coal utilization. The paper also points out that Circular Economy Park is a practical way to develop a low carbon economy for coal industry. An econometric model for total coal industry and each sector are constructed to measure carbon emissions based on CO2 equivalent emissions, then with detailed calculations, based on potential greenhouse-gas emission's reduction, a most likely low carbon roadmap of China's coal industry is depicted with scenario analysis method.Introduction Global warming poses a profound threat to humanity and the natural world and is one of the most serious challenges humankind has ever faced. According to the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global surface temperature increased 273.89 ± 273.33K during the 20th century (IPCC 2007). Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases have caused most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century (United States National Academy of Sciences 2008), and CO2 is the most important cause of global warming. In 2005, CO2 contributed 76% of global greenhouse gas emissions, CH4 contributed approximately 16%, N2O contributed approximately 6% and the combined F-gases contributed approximately 2% (IEA 2010). Among the many human activities that produce greenhouse gases, energy use is by far the largest source of emissions. Since 1870, CO2 emissions from fuel combustion have risen exponentially (IEA 2009). Of the three types of fossil fuels - coal, natural gas and petroleum - coal constituted only a quarter of the world total primary energy consumption in 2007. The situation is even more critical in China than in the rest of the world, as energy-intensive industrial production is growing rapidly, and large coal reserves exist in combination with limited reserves of other energy sources. The development and production of the coal industry provide stability in China's economic growth. There are more than 7000 coal enterprises in China; the coal enterprises are the main contributor to China's ""economic miracle""."

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

This paper discusses the conceptual design of cut-and-cover tunnels currently being considered as one of the replacement options for the earthquake damaged, elevated double-deck highway and seawall built in downtown Seattle 50 years ago. The 4.8 km (3 mile) long, 6-lane improvement consists of 1.6 km (1 mile) of at-grade roadway with aerial interchanges, 1.6 km (1 mile) of large two-level cut-and-cover tunnels along the Elliott Bay waterfront, and retrofit of the 50-year old, 1.6 km (1 mile)long Battery Street tunnel and north transition to grade. Construction of deep cut-and-cover tunnels, in complex glacial geology overlain by hydraulically placed fill immediately adjacent the existing sea wall, will require extensive use of concrete diaphragm walls, ground improvement and dewatering. The potential liquefaction and lateral spreading of the fill materials in this active seismic region pose significant design challenges and risk.

"Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) are located within 305-m (1000-ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for mobile tent-type RAs. The results of these studies show that most of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation (51%) and conduction (31%). Three mine width/height configurations and three mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied less than 1°C (1.8°F) for the three mine width/height configurations and less than 2°C (3.6°F) for the three mine strata compositions. INTRODUCTION Following a mine disaster, workers will try to escape the mine. If their escape is futile, they can take shelter in a refuge alternative (RA). In 2008, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandated RAs in mines to ensure that a safe and livable shelter is provided for a minimum of 96 hours, and that the apparent temperature (AT) does not exceed 35°C (95°F) inside the RA [1]. An ongoing concern with RAs is the potential to exceed this limit. The temperature rise inside an RA is due to the metabolic heat released by the occupants as well as heat released by the carbon dioxide scrubbing system. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a 10-person tent-type training unit RA in its Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to investigate heat buildup in RAs. The 10-person capacity for the tested RA is based on 1.4 m2 (15 ft2) of floor space per miner. NIOSH-developed simulated miners, which are heat input devices that generate both sensible and latent heat, were used to represent the metabolic heat generation of an average miner (117 W) for testing in the SRCM. It was found that the number of occupants in an RA may need to be reduced based on the ambient mine temperature, which varies from mine to mine [2]. To further research temperature rise inside an RA, ThermoAnalytics, Inc. (TAI) was contracted by NIOSH to perform thermal simulations of the tested 10-person mobile tent-type RA. TAI developed a thermal model of the SRCM using RadTherm software, which incorporates a human thermal model (HTM) to represent the equivalent metabolic heat loss of a miner within the RA’s enclosed environment. The thermal model was previously validated by comparing simulation results with test results [3]. During a mine disaster in which miners would have to take shelter in an RA, mine ventilation may not be available. As such, mine ventilation was off for both the testing in the SRCM as well as in the simulations. This paper discusses the heat loss mechanisms and the effects of mine strata composition and mine width and height associated with a ten-person tent-type RA."

In each chapter an attempt has been made to describe the more common commercial mineral involved with the commodity and the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these processes are utilized.

"The Gateway Trans-Hudson Partnership (GTHP), a joint venture of WSP USA, Inc., AECOM USA, Inc, and STV Incorporated, is providing preliminary engineering services to Amtrak for the Hudson Tunnel project as well as supporting the NEPA process for getting the record of decision (ROD). This preliminary engineering design effort by GTHP includes geotechnical exploration and laboratory testing, design of structures, tunnel contract packaging and procurement planning.The Hudson Tunnel Project includes the construction of a new Hudson River Tunnel system and rehabilitation of the existing North River Tunnel. The new tunnel system will be constructed south of the existing North River Tunnel, from North Bergen under the Palisades to Hoboken in New Jersey, below the Hudson River, and connecting directly to Penn Station in New York (Fig. 1). The tunnel system is configured as two single-track tubes, intermediate ventilation shafts and cross passages in compliance with NFPA- 130 requirements. The adjacent surface alignment west of the Palisades will be constructed on viaducts, embankment and retained fills. The existing North River Tunnel (Fig. 2) consists of two single-track, electrified rail tunnels extending from tunnel portals in North Bergen, New Jersey to Penn Station in New York. Completed in 1910 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the tunnel opened at the same time as Penn Station and the four, single-track, East River tunnels that connect Penn Station to Queens and onto Long Island and New England, respectively. Both tunnels in the existing North River Tunnel were inundated with brackish river water during Superstorm Sandy (Fig. 3), resulting in the cancellation of all Amtrak and NJ Transit service into New York City for five days. After the brackish water was removed from the tunnels, the residual chlorides and sulfates have had on-going detrimental impacts on the interior concrete and rail systems."

Global public mineral reporting codes have driven strong governance of public disclosures of minerals information. Recently, we have seen an increase in disclosure of information related to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues, and governance of ESG information in mining companies has arguably reached a similar level of governance and diligence afforded mineral reporting. We define Resource Governance as the conjunction of environmental, social and minerals governance. A modern systems approach to Resource Governance, which combines mineral and ESG information, would provide not only reporting and governance capability, but also has the potential to sense/respond, predict, and manage ESG risks.

Dawsonite bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River Formation offers a unique and vast (6.5 billion tons of Al2O3) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions dawsonite and its oil shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary Federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. A benefit associated with this high temperature is that noble metal catalysts are not required for the cell electrochemical oxidation and reduction processes. The underground voids that result from mining provide opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD). Such disposal could solve many environmental problems. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. The US government is now planning on using specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. Using the experience gained from the domestic projects that are now in preparation and from foreign repositories that are now in operation, US mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

No other region of the world is enjoying the tremendous growth of power use that is currently being experienced in Asia. Fortunately for those of us in the coal industry -particularly in Asia -the preponderance of the power plants being planned or under construction designed to use coal as the power plant fuel. This has produced a significant increase in the demand for steam coal, which has in turn encouraged many of us in the industry to develop new coal mines. One country that has enjoyed very substantial growth in coal production is Indonesia. This developing country of 195,000,000 people who live on the nearly 13,000 islands of Indonesia have emerged very quickly to become the third largest exporter of steam coal, following only Australia and South Africa. Almost all coal in Indonesia is mined by surface mining methods. This paper will examine the surface mining of coal in Indonesia, as it continues to be an important part of the supply equation for coal in Asia.

"Reiche Zeche is a lead-zinc-silver deposit in Freiberg, Germany, that was mined for over 800 years. Since 1969, Reiche Zeche has been a teaching and research mine with numerous adits for dewatering large amounts of inflowing water. Infrequent metal water quality monitoring in the 1980-1990s and flooding of the mine in 2002 led to a lack of relevant data. New measurements were taken at different level adits and ore veins for comparison to historical values, revealing pH levels as low as 1.95, conductivity as high as 22000 µS/cm, and an overall trend towards less acidic waters. INTRODUCTION Reiche Zeche is part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, a former iron ore mine in Freiberg, Germany, in the Erzgebirge mining region of Saxony. The polymetallic sulfide ore found in Freiberg was mined from 1168 to 1969, and though it is no longer producing ore, Reiche Zeche remains as a teaching and research mine for the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg. The most important ore minerals mined were sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and silver, and important gangue minerals include calcite, fluorite, barite, siderite, and quartz (Zänker et al 2002). Over one thousand ore loads were mined from this region during operation, which was ceased in 1969 after the lower part of the 700 meter depth was flooded, leaving only the top 200 meters under the surface open for research and teaching. Mined materials from this region can be separated into high grade ore and waste rock. High grade ore, composed of pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite, was brought to surface for smelting during mine operation, and spaces were backfilled with waste rock, which is the primary site of sulfide oxidation and acid mine drainage (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). The waste rock includes remnants of ore from ore loss, veins which were too small to mine, or ore minerals within host rock. Waste rock is primarily composed of biotite gneiss, with sulfides including jarosite, gypsum, minor anglesite, scorodite, and sulfur (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). When weathered, the gneiss forms clay minerals such as illite and kaolinite (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002)."
