Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

In view of the success of recent laboratory studies using X-ray computed tomography (CT) to determine coal washability and with the availability of high-speed CT systems, it now seems possible to design an on-stream washability system for the control of coarse coal-cleaning circuits. Design features for such a system are examined and possible control strategies are discussed for different applications.

Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of chemical additives and metal ions present either added or present as contaminants, on the flotation. Fuerstenau and Palmer (1976) have studied in detail the adsorption of multivalent cations onto oxide and silicate minerals. It was observed that the adsorption of a multivalent metal species exhibits a sharp pH dependence which is related to the formation of hydroxy complexes of the metal ions in solution. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions.

The situation has worsened, but the techniques of geostatistics have dramatically changed. Up to millions of dollars can be saved during exploration with simple use of variograms; then, during reserves estimation with kriging methods; and finally, with the parameterization of reserves, when evaluating a project and optimizing its global mining parameters.

Rock suitable for crushed-stone aggregate is almost entirely restricted to the Highlands region of Arkansas, mostly from Paleozoic sedimentary units, but also from a few Cretaceous igneous plutons. Reserves in the state are sufficient for local needs, and Arkansas is geographically well situated for export markets to the south, where resources for crushed-stone aggregate are lacking. A study of 423 quarries, test pits, and exploration sites in Arkansas has been completed to evaluate the relative quality of bedrock units for producing crushed aggregate. Of these, 274 sites have records of engineering tests for stone evaluation done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and/or the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). Of the 1,775 sample records from these sites, the most commonly reported parameters are the LA abrasion test and the Na-sulfate soundness test. Many records also have absorption and specific-gravity data, and, for some, petrographic information helps identify the potential for alkali-silica reactivity in portland-cement concrete. By determining the bedrock sources of the tested samples, comparison is made between the various geologic mapping units as to their relative quality for crushed stone.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name II Sp 1 it Sets'" have been under research and development by the author and the Ingersoll-Rand Company since February of 1973. The United States Bureau of Mines and the Mines Enforcement and Safety Administration as well as many mining companies have cooperated in field testing the device. Split Set rock anchors are distinctively different from the widely used mechanical rock anchors or fully grouted rock anchors. They control ground movement internally in a manner that allows controlled deformation during the early phase of the ground reaction curve but then, as secondary creep develops, anchorage per unit length increases and they serve to strengthen and stabilize the opening for long periods of time. The history of research and development of the Scott Split Set rock anchor system with accompanying laboratory and field test data is presented in this paper.

The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.

A prototype expert advisor was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to systematically offer advice on the control of a Florida phosphate operation. The PC based system receives input from remote sensors for circuit parameters such as feed rate, reagent addition, and pH and from operator entered information such as the quality of the concentrate and tailings in each of the coarse, fine, and amine flotation circuits. The computer evaluates the information using rules obtained from industry representatives and Bureau flotation experts. Recommended actions and questions are displayed to quickly guide the operator to a problem within the flotation circuit and suggest a solution. This process control system could provide more uniformity among the flotation operators and also serve as a trainer for new operators. In addition, it represents a step toward fully automated systems for phosphate flotation.

"The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

What is the cummulative rate of recovery of copper from a sulfide leach dump? This is one of the most frequently asked questions today. We, in the industry, ask it of each other when we meet; however, the technical answers may vary from "I don't know" to 'quite good" from people within the same company. Management also poses this question because it plays a vital role in our planning for future production. The answer is difficult because of the many variables between different operations such as physical construction of the dump, topography of the original site, characteristics of dump material, mineralization, water application, etc. Each has a bearing on the rate of recovery. OPERATIONAL DATA Our method of water distribution is unique in that each dump is drilled to allow physical injection of water into the dump. The in¬jection holes are drilled vertically, on 251 centers, from the surface of the dump. Normally, the holes are drilled 40' deep and cased with 4" PVC perforated pipe.. The pipe is perforated at one-foot intervals with four V diameter holes at 901 spacing on the pipe circumference. We formerly alternated shallow holes (20'-40') with deep holes (80'-l80') in an effort to cover the entire dump and hasten oxidation. The shallow hole depth varied according to the compaction thickness. The deep hole depth varied according to the height of the dump and the original ground profile, We prefer to have the deep holes end 20'-30' above the original ground level. This generally allows us to penetrate the coarse material at the bottom of the dump. We had to discontinue the deep holes_ in order to cover more dump area in a shorter period of time to meet increased production requirements.

"The high virgin horizontal in situ stress field in the Sydney Basin and its impact on civil engineering projects is a well-known and accepted phenomenon found in significant literature (e.g., Pells, 2013). The prevailing high-stress effects depend on many factors — rock quality, tunnel orientation, proximity of geological features to tunnel crown, size and shape of opening, depth of excavation and stress magnitude. The behavior of the rock mass under high in situ stress conditions can cause stress fracturing and consequent dilation of the tunnel periphery, resulting in rock spalling at the tunnel crown/ invert or raveling of rock blocks on the tunnel sidewall. This type of failure is of a brittle nature and may create construction and safety risks during tunnel excavation, if it occurs behind the excavation face where ground support has already been installed. Therefore, the associated risks need to be managed during construction. This paper presents the design strategy adopted to mitigate these adverse tunneling conditions for the WestConnex Project to-date. Overview of the WestConnex M4 East and new M5 tunnel projectsWestConnex is one of the New South Wales government’s key infrastructure projects. This 33 km (20.5 mile) project aims to ease congestion and connect communities and is the largest integrated transport and urban revitalization project in Australia. It was a key recommendation of the State Infrastructure Strategy released in October 2012. It brings together a number of important road projects, which, together, form a vital link in Sydney’s Orbital Network. These road projects include a widening of the M4 east of Parramatta, a duplication of the M5 East, and new sections of motorway to provide a connection between these two key corridors. The WestConnex project includes a number of stages: Stage 1a: M4 Widening; Stage 1b: M4 East; Stage 2: New M5; and Stage 3: M4–M5 Link. The tunnel design referenced in this paper relates to Stage 1b and Stage 2 of the WestConnex Project (Fig. 1)."

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The method, thoroughly worked out and tested for 10 years, consists of taking the second split urine sample from the HPLC preparation, evaporating to dryness and dissolving in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Mill Level Zone mine is one of the deepest block cave mines in the world and is in mountainous terrain in West Papua, Indonesia. The mineralization is hosted in a skarn deposit in a structural setting that is complex at the footprint, mine and regional scale. Large seismic events and significant episodes of rapid rock mass deformation are potentially critical geotechnical risks during this ramp-up stage of mining. Understanding the interaction between stress, strain, rock mass strength and geological structures is essential to minimize the hazard and engineer control measures to help ensure the safety of the employees while achieving production targets. This paper discusses how the seismicity and excavation damage have been shaped by the interactions between the mine and geological features, and how this affects strategic mining decisions. Additionally, the paper presents a summary of the mitigation measures used for mining the DMLZ in the safest and most productive way. These include improvements to geotechnical characterization of rock mass and structure, dynamic ground support designs, production scheduling for desirable cave propagation and a seismic monitoring system with re-entry protocols.

"As an extension of the work on the effect of OH- on various cations in hydrometallurgical systems, the effect of Cl-, Br-, I- and CN- on cations such as Ag+, Cd2+, Hg2+, Cu+, Cu2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Pb2+ and Sn2+ has been examined in detail. The Newton-Raphson technique has been used to determine the amounts of various metal species as a function of the concentration of anions. Some practical implications of various metal complexes in metal separation and removal from solutions have been examined and discussed.IntroductionUnderstanding the role of anions in hydrometallurgical processes often determines the success of an operation. The successful choice of concentration and type of anions not only leads to an effective extraction and removal of metals (Esmaeili et al., 2005; Brbooti et al., 2011; Wei et al., 2005; Jeppesen et al., 2009; Al-Tarazi et al., 2004), but also to assisting effective separation of various metals, whether it is a solvent extraction, ion exchange operation or even a simple precipitation (Farha et al., 2011; Sevenich and Fritz, 1983; Rashid, 1974).This paper continues the discussion of the role of anions in hydrometallurgical systems beyond the role of OH-, which was the topic of a previous paper (Kim et al., 2014). Table 1 lists various anions that are frequently used in conjunction with metal ions to be selectively separated or precipitated. As seen in the table, many anions are used frequently in hydrometallurgical practices. Some of the more frequently used anions include OH-, SO4 2- and CO3 2-. The halogen elements, Cl-, Br- and I- , as well as CN-, are also used in hydrometallurgical applications, especially in relation to noble metal recoveries (Meng and Han, 1994; Zhang et al., 1996; Sun et al., 1996; Starovoytov et al., 2007)."

This paper presents a framework for analyzing the theory and industrial practice of coal flotation and gives some examples of its use for understanding flotation phenomena and optimizing/controlling flotation circuit performance. It is based on extensive laboratory and in plant test work conducted over the past several years by researchers at MTU as well as an analysis of the literature. Previous researchers have usually considered either the surface chemistry or the kinetics of coal flotation behavior, only rarely have these factors been considered together. However, these factors must be considered together in order to gain a clear understanding of the theory underlying coal flotation such that its practical application can be optimized. Fortunately, this complex objective can be achieved by considering the recovery and rate of recovery of the different types of particles present in the feed to coal flotation circuits and the fundamental mechanisms responsible for these recovery phenomena. The influence of three major groups of variables must be considered: control variables (reagent additions, aeration rate, etc.); disturbance variables (feed pH, percent solids, etc.); and circuit design variables (number of cells, circuit arrangement, etc.). Each of these groups of variables affects process kinetics in a clearly understandable manner, which, once determined, is extremely useful in circuit design and optimization. This paper includes a discussion of the use of the proposed framework to explain the effects of some coal characteristics on flotation performance. In addition, an example of using this analysis to optimize the performance of a coal flotation circuit using frother and collector addition levels is included.

Texas Gulf Sulphur Company's Lee Creek Mine has opened a major phosphate mining district in the Central Coastal Plains of North Carolina (Fig. 1). The ore deposit as it is now known was roughly outlined in 1961 by a Texas Gulf geologist using wire line exploration methods. Slightly uraniferous phosphate materials were detected by a slim-hole gamma ray probe run in numerous farmers' water wells penetrating the formations. A follow-up-core drilling pro- gram determined the economic ore limits to lie in the south central section of Beaufort County beneath 70 feet to 120 feet of unconsolidated sediments. The 50,000 acre deposit is known to contain over two billion tons of phosphate ore amenable to strip mining methods. A part of the deposit underlies several thousand acres of the Pamlico River estuary. The 90 million dollar capital investment plant built by Texas Gulf during 1965-66 included a strip mining operation using a 72-yard walking dragline, a three million product ton per year flotation concentrator, four fluid bed calciners, a sulphuric acid plant (acid for captive use), a phosphoric acid plant, and three solid fertilizer material plants. Shipment to domestic markets is by rail and truck and to over- seas markets by barge to a transshipment terminal at Morehead City, North Carolina. Early mining investigations were conclusive first that the phosphate ore could economically be recovered only by dry strip mining methods, and second that artesian ground waters in the formation (Castle Hayne limestone) underlying the ore would have to be controlled. This report will relate the application of ground water hydrology in depressurizing the Castle Hayne aquifer to facilitate dry strip mining at depths 130 feet below sea level at the Lee Creek Mine.
