The areas of application, the limitations imposed by water chemistry as well as the advantages and disadvantages in the use of limestone for the treatment of coal mine drainage have recently been described by the authors (1),(2), (3). The process has been demonstrated in continuous, full-scale operation to yield a treated water meeting specifications established by the Pennsylvania Sanitary Water Board and containing excess alkalinity. Their final pH levels are usually less than seven, a condition which avoids consumption of excess neutralization reagents, but which occurs with lime-based processes and results from unwanted side reactions. Operating experience has been cited by Calhoun (4) using ferric waters while others (5), (6), (7), (8), (11), have reported on related research efforts. Despite the advantages including ?the relative simplicity, and minimal costs of the process, there have been very limited industrial applications of mine drainage neutralization with limestone. Although any treatment of these waters may be considered as a temporary control measure (9), the lack of feasible, immediate alternatives, the extensive magnitude. of the waters and the high cost of treatment requires that optimum processes should be utilized and that operating experience in their use be developed as is feasible. This paper will review treatment experience with a ferrous water of moderate pollution loading .

Gold is very important to support the financial system, and to be used in industries of the jewelry, high-tech fields such as electronics and aerospace, etc. Gold is mainly extracted from three types of ores: primary ore (vein gold), placer (alluvial gold) and associated ore. Cyanide was widely used in gold ore flotation to depress gangue minerals and leaching/cyanidation. The process of extracting gold from gold ore, its separation and flotation concentrate, specifically through a technique called cyanidation or cyanide leaching. This method, which has been dominant since the 1970s, utilizes a dilute solution of cyanide to dissolve gold from the ore. While effective, the use of cyanide raises environmental and safety concerns due to its high toxicity. Cyanide spills can have severe environmental consequences. This has led to the exploration of alternative, environmentally friendly reagents. This paper discusses processing results using the alternative flotation depressants such as sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), etc. to produce a goldrich flotation concentrate for sale to a smelter or as feed to an alternative leaching agent. and methods to extract gold from ore without relying on cyanide.

The TRAC™ Program was developed to provide our clients with a mechanism that allows them to better manage site remedia­tion and closure costs. This program provides a fixed-price contract for site remediation and case closure and is well suited for large pro­jects with multiple PRPs, such as Superfund sites. Because Kvaerner is a large engineering/construction firm and not a consult­ing firm, we can offer this type of contracting mechanism that envi­ronmental consulting firms are hesitant or unable to provide. With TRAC™, Kvaerner assumes financial and technical responsibilities for carrying a site through the closure process for a fixed price. Liabilities carried on our client's balance sheet for site closure can be removed when they sign up forTRAC™. In many instances, a profit can be realized as the liability on the balance sheet may exceed our TRAC™ fixed-price cost to close the site. Bonds and other sureties securing the site can be released and set­tlement with other involved parties can be quickly reached. For a project to be considered for this program, it typically meets the following criteria: 1) The project site should be physically separated from other contaminated sites 2) A reasonable quantity of site investigation data must be avail­able including site-usage history with or without a projected fea­sibility study(ies) and/or remediation design 3) Access to perform all necessary work must be available. After a review of all site data, K vaerner develops a "risk menu" to manage financial risks. In this "menu", each compo­nent of the project is assigned a level of probability that the costs will occur. Then the base cost of each activity is "weighted" by multiplying the potential cost growth by the probability. This analysis assures that the financial risks are appropriately defined, weighted, and mitigated and a realistic fixed price is developed. Upon acceptance of our proposal and conclusion of contract negotiations, Kvaerner takes over future responsibility for clos­ing your site. Taconite tailings reclamation, especially the stabilization of tailings ponds, .dams, and slopes, can be effectively accomplished through the use of appropriate vegetation. Utilizing vegetation provides both aesthetic and ecological enhancement of a site while at the same time protecting tailings structures against wind and water erosion. Generally, the methods and techniques for establishing vegetation are well known; however, there are many site-specific factors that can alter a particular reclamation approach. Those factors include slope gradient, tailings material size, solar exposure, and physical and chemical properties of tailings. In addition to the site-specific factors, variations in climate, geography, and physiography of a region can have a pervasive influence on the success or failure of a revegetation program. Both the site-specific and regional factors control reclamation planning in such areas as plant variety selection, methods and times of plants establishment, maintenance techniques, and subsequent monitoring methods. As a result of this multifactor relationship, it is important to establish a data base that identifies both the site-specific and location conditions in order to tailor the reclamation plan to the specific area. When an appropriate data base has been collected, detailing the various site-specific and regional factors that will influence a revegetation program (in the absence of previous testing), it is very beneficial to apply experimental techniques to develop the reclamation plan for a specific site. The reclamation plan for a specific site may include several techniques adapted for the differences found within the specific site as the result of topographic or other influences. Considering this, the Reserve Mining Company and Dames & Moore undertook to develop a successful reclamation plan based on a detailed test plot program conducted at the Mile Post 7 location.

Percussive drill calibration experiments performed by the Bureau of Mines on two drills are described. The use of a linear velocity transducer to determine piston velocity, blow frequency, and piston stroke length is discussed. Data are presented on the relationships between maximum work rate and feed air pressure. Penetration rates in nine rock types were measured for the same two drills. Physical properties of the nine rock types are presented in tabular and graphical form to show relationships between penetration rates and physical properties. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to the potential use of these data to predict percussive drilling rates.

A variety of chemicals offered by Armak were evaluated as dewatering aids for aqueous slurries of silica sand, sparsand and feldspar; an established commercial dewatering aid was used as a control. A number of Armak's potential dewatering aids yielded lower moisture retention values than did the commercial product on all of the mineral samples. In addition to the chemical dewatering evaluations, some of the mechanisms involved in the removal of water from these mineral samples were examined.

Geotechnical investigations for the Mid-City Extension of the Los Angeles Metro revealed high concentrations of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas as well as methane. Testing techniques employed to determine the extent of gasses, and to identify potential treatment measures, included gas sampling with cone penetrometers and soil-gas extraction with air injection testing. A gas reservoir model was developed to predict inflows into excavations. Other studies included a hazard evaluation and a general data search for other H2S occurrences and geologic conditions that could facilitate the accumulation of H2S. The paper describes the investigations and proposed design and construction alternatives.

Laterite ore is a valuable resource due to its high content of metals essential for modern technology, including nickel, iron, and cobalt. However, extracting nickel from laterite ores is challenging due to their complex mineral composition and low nickel concentrations. This study examined the leaching behavior of pre-roasted laterite ore and the effect of roasting on leaching kinetics. The ore was roasted at temperatures of 280°C and 610°C for 3 h, followed by sulfuric acid atmospheric leaching. The results demonstrated that pre-roasting at 610°C significantly enhanced nickel leaching recovery, with up to 93% nickel successfully recovered. The leaching process of pre-roasted laterite ore was found to be controlled by diffusion through the ash layer, with activation energy values of 20.97 and 18.97 kJ/mol for laterite roasted at 280°C and 610°C, respectively. These findings indicate that pre-roasting can improve the leaching performance of laterite ore, potentially leading to more efficient and sustainable nickel extraction processes.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

In some 35 years in the explosive and construction industries, we have probably seen the extremes in drilling and blasting practices. All of you know that it is difficult if not impossible, to separate those two operations, particularly when we are searching for an optimum. Early in my career while doing engineering survey work for a major cross country pipeline construction company, we witnessed some of the wildest blasts imaginable, and they were wild for two reasons. Both the drill hole diameter and the drill pattern were such that when loaded with explosives, the factor in terms of pounds/cu. yd. was extremely high. On the other hand, in 1982 we were in an underground coal mine where just one hole was used to prepare a 20-ft. (6m) wide face. In this coal mine, they brought down 7 yd3 (5.35m3) of coal with just 1 lb. (.454 kg) of explosive. On a pipeline job, the factor may only be .1 yd3 per lb. of explosives. Open pit operations in the same geographical area may have almost the same type of rock, but similarities could end there. The several operators over the years will have installed different size-crushing equipment or variances will exist in other facets such as drilling, excavating, and haulage units. That tells us that if we have 6 operations in that common area, we are faced with a fact that there is an optimum drilling and blasting pattern for each of those six. We start at that point. We will note from Figure No. 2 the simple equations for determining either cu. yds. or tons. For a rock heavier than limestone, it may require only 10 to 11 cu. ft. (.31m3) for 1 ton (.91 metric ton) of rock in place.

This paper is intended to provide information for one to be able to determine the slurry system head curve for pump applications. The slurry characteristics are the basis for what the size, material of construction, and critical carrying velocity of the pipe will be. The system head curve is adjusted by use of the pipe friction coefficient factor and slurry derate factors. An example using multi-staging of slurry pump curves is presented to compare the wear life relationship of pump parts for a tailing pipeline system head curve.

The oxide fraction of industrial zinc ash was characterized in terms of chemical and phase composition, leaching behavior in sulfuric acid solutions, and leaching thermal effect. The waste product contained about 68 percent zinc (Zn), 7 percent chlorine (Cl), 2 percent aluminum (Al) and less than 1 percent other metals, such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca) and silicon (Si). It consisted mainly of zinc oxide contaminated with metallic zinc and zinc hydroxide chloride. The dissolution of metals from the zinc ash was determined for solid-to-liquid ratios ranging from 100 to 500 kg/m3, acid concentrations of 10 and 20 percent, and temperatures of 20 and 40 °C. Michiquillay is a major copper deposit situated about 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Cajamarca in northern Peru (Fig. 1). It occurs largely in quartz monzonite in a shatter zone produced by the intersection of northwest- and northeast-trending fault systems. The geology is described by Hollister and Sirvas (1974). The ore deposit was drilled in 1963-1964 by Asarco, with results indicating a resource of 575 Mt (634 million st) averaging 0.72% Cu-0.03% Mo. A decision to bring the project to production has been deferred because world capacity to produce copper has been more than adequate to serve world requirements since 1964. The chain of events leading to the discovery of Michiquillay was set in motion by a decision by the management responsible for the Chilete mine to undertake an investigation of the surrounding area for a possible supplementary source of mill feed to bolster its decreasing lead-zinc reserves. Chilete, located 100 km (62 miles) inland from Pacasmayo, is the most northerly, important mining project in Peru, and little was known of the mineral potential north and east of that point. Relatively unimpressive reports of Colonial silver mining had attracted little investigation, and little was known of the regional geology. One study by Benavides (1956) had been made of the Cretaceous in the region of Cajamarca.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

Mica is a generic term that applies to a group of complex aluminosilicate minerals that have a sheet or plate-like structure and with different chemical compositions and physical properties. All micas form flat six-sided monoclinic crystals with remarkable cleavage parallel to the direction of the large surfaces, which permits them to be split into optically flat films; as thin as 1µm in thickness in some cases (Rajgarhia, 1987). Some micas are more easily split than others. For example, muscovite mica found in pegmatites is more easily split into thin films than is phlogopite. Mica found in mica schist is not as easily delaminated as mica found in weathered pegmatites. According to Dawson (1 949), the commercially important mica minerals are: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless to pale green and ruby) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (dark brown to black) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (pale yellow to dark brown) Vermiculite-hydrated biotite or magnesium-iron-mica (bronze yellow flakes) Lepidolite-potassium-lithium mica (pale lilac to deep purple) Some micas of less importance are: Zinnwaldite-lithium-iron mica (gray to smoky brown) Roscoelite-vanadium-potassium-magnesium mica (various shades of green and brown) Mica, principally muscovite, is widely used for industrial applications because of its exceptional physical, chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties (Table 1). Phlogopite and vermiculite follow muscovite in importance. Biotite finds very little commercial application at the present time. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms. These forms and their description follow: Sheet mica refers to books of mica either mined from hard rock (pegmatites) or from loosely consolidated clayey material formed from the weathering of pegmatites and alaskites. These books can be readily split into thin film or splittings with specific thicknesses ranging from 0.0031 to 0.10 mm (Davis, 1985). Quality sheet mica is graded into 10 quality classifications (Tables 2 and 3). Books of mica that are flawed with excess inclusions, cracks, or folds (A mica) are called scrap mica and are either ground into commercial products by a dry or wet process. Built-up mica was developed in 1894 as a result of the cost and scarcity of sheet mica, and because many satisfactory electrical parts could be made from it (Preston, 1971). This type mica is formed by layering pieces of mica splittings upon one another and binding them together with inorganic or organic binders. These sheets are then pressed together under high temperature. Mica for this process is produced from pieces of sheet mica too small to be punched into electrical parts (Davis, 1985). Reconstituted mica is mica paper produced by forming a mat of very thin delaminated flakes of scrap mica. This mat is usually impregnated with an organic binder, but is also available unimpregnated. It is dried at 110°C. The mica for this process is either produced from the trimmings of a sheet mica operation or from blocks of A type mica (Davis, 1985, Chapman, 1983). Ground mica constitutes by far the largest use of mica, both quantitatively and application wise. It is produced by grinding and sizing scrap mica (also mica concentrate) obtained from five sources, 1) trimming from sheet mica, 2) A type mica blocks, 3) as a byproduct of spodumene and feldspar mining, 4) weathered pegmatites and alaskites, and 5) metamorphic schists. Synthetic mica is produced by crystal growth in a slowly cooled melt of accurately proportioned chemical oxides. Extended cooling times at a specific viscosity result in larger crystals. Many different micas have been formed by this process; however, fluorophlogopite is the most common.

Coal mine planning has three distinct decision levels: (1) decisions made at the upper level of management that determine production requirements for specific mines, (2) decisions made at the middle management level, the mine level, that determine how the mine satisfies its production requirements, and (3) decisions made at the operating level of management, the sectional level, that determine the sequencing of machine movements at the face. In this paper, the underground production scheduling problem is formulated in multi-stages using the Hierarchical Production Planning (HPP) approach. Two linear programming HPP models for accomplishing decisions at the first two levels are developed. Both models address the aggregate production planning process. The Mine Production Scheduling (MPS) model permits determination of monthly production and inventory levels. The Section Production Scheduling (SPS) model incorporates a quality blending requirement into the determination of weekly sectional production and inventory levels.

Convergence measurement across the 17.4 m (57ft) high shaft station/loading pocket at Mt. Taylor provided continuing verification of stability and safety. Three levels of instrumentation, consisting of three lines each, were installed and monitored. The instrumentation showed that the flexible lining restrained the adjacent rock. The flexible lining consisted of pea gravel with neat cement between rock and liner plate, wooden crush blocks between liner plate and steel ring beams. The loading pocket is elliptical, 11.6 by 9.6 m (38 by 31 1/2 ft) I.D. The crush blocks were designed to allow 15 cm (6 in.) of convergence. Maximum predicted convergence was 7.0 cm (2 3/4 in.) and 5.7 cm (2 1/4 in.) was measured. Convergence measurements also demonstrated decreasing deformation with respect to elapsed time and distance from the measurement station to the temporary bottom of the shaft excavation.

"One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the pre-stressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels. An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct, extends the full length of the 4.6km long twin, two lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approx. 4.3km) were constructed using two 12.4m diameter double shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit out challenges. A key component of the civil fit out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels which was designed as a precast solution. The slabs which each measure 8.62m long by 2.0m wide by 200mm thick and weigh close to 9 tonne need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100mm. This paper details the events of how the Transcity JV tunnel fit out team, comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists, drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system to solve this challenging problem. This globetrotting story, which starts in Australia, visits Europe and mainland China before returning to Brisbane where it all began."

INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. It was therefore decided to blast the whole sill using two spherical charges prop¬erly placed in each hole, but with the application of
