An 18.5 km (12 mile) long tunnel is being driven by four Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB-TBMs) of 4.7 m (15.5 ft.) diameter through alluvial sand, gravel, silt and clay above and below the groundwater table in Los Angeles beneath buildings, railroads, freeways and the L.A. River. Continuous automatic data recording of TBM operation and field inspectors' records, accompanied by monitoring of 5,000 surface reference points and 268 borehole extensometers were used to obtain information. The paper explains the reason for selecting the method of EPB-tunneling to ensure stability of the tunnel and meeting of environmental requirements, and presents data collected to monitor and demonstrate the performance of the TBM sin the different ground conditions encountered.

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferrosilicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker HillMine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs. Se identificó al sistema hidráulico y a los enlaces hidráulicos, mangueras y tuberías como el sistema y subsistema más importantes, respectivamente. Se identificó una función de distribución de tres parámetros gamma como el más apto para un modelado de probabilidades del tiempo transcurrido entre las fallas (Tabes por sus siglas en inglés). Esta distribución fue usada en un análisis de confiabilidad Monte Carlo para un sistema hidráulico. El promedio de movimiento integrado auto-regresivo (ARIMA por sus siglas en inglés), dentro del contexto de análisis de serie temporal de los TBFs, fue propuesto como una alternativa viable a la tradicional técnica de ajuste de distribución. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. A summary of the progress OMSHR has made over the 10-year period since the Act was published previously (Snyder et al., 2016).External contracts are broadly classified by the following areas:• Communications and tracking.• Emergency response.o Self-escape and breathing air supply.o Refuge alternatives.o Escape and rescue.• Equipment safety.• Fires and explosions.• Ground control.• Mine environmental systems (mine ventilation and atmospheric monitoring).• Worker/workplace health and safety.Contracts are issued under a request for proposal (RFP), through a broad agency announcement (BAA) or under an interagency agreement (IAA). An RFP solicitation includes a specific problem description and a well-defined scope of work to guide the offeror in preparing a bid to conduct the research. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

Classification of rock and coal is one preliminary problem for fully automated or intelligent mining. It assists in automated rib stability analysis and enables the shearer to adjust the drums without human intervention. This paper studies the classification of rock from coal on rib images using machine learning techniques. A database of rock and coal images was created by filtering photographs taken by NIOSH researchers during site visits. Machine learning was conducted on patches, smaller images randomly extracted from each rock or coal image. After training, the classifier was validated with the testing dataset and achieved an accuracy score of 0.9.

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Homestake Mining Co.'s operations are at Lead, SD. Production from the various methods used are: 1 155 753 t/a (1,274,000 stpy) by open cut-and-fill, 68 039 t/a (75,000 stpy) by square set cut-and-fill, 144242 t/a (159,000 stpy) by shrinkage stoping, 107 048 t/ a (118,000 stpy) by blasthole stoping, and 67 132 t/a (74,000 stpy) in development work for a total of 1 542 214 t/a (1,700,000 stpy). Mining takes place from the 616-m (2000-ft) level to the 2073-m (6800 ft) level (Fig. 1). The average travel time to the stope is 45 min. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip of Ore Body Six major ledges varying from 914 m (3000 ft) long by 228.6 m (750 ft) wide to 305 m (1000 ft) long by 122 m (400 ft) wide are mined. Within these ledges are irregular-shaped areas of varying sizes. These ledges dip at approximately 1.2 rad (70°) to the east and plunge to the south from 0.26 to 1.57 rad (15° to 90°). Ground Conditions The ore is cummingtonite (chlorite schist) which is very competent except for major bedding planes and fracture patterns. The footwall is a slate but because of the dip presents very few problems. The hanging wall is also a slate which because of the dip and bedding is very weak and requires considerable rockbolting. No problem has been encountered with rock bursts to a depth of 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore Value The ore values vary somewhat from ledge to ledge, but the average ore delivered to the mill is approxi¬mately 6.2 g (0.2 oz) of gold per ton. A small amount of silver is the only byproduct of this operation. Annual production of gold is approximately 10 575 183 g (340,000 troy oz). Production Requirements The mine has a mill capacity of approximately 1 723 651 t (1,900,000 st) but because of several fac¬tors (manpower, depth, etc.) this mill capacity has not been attainable for the past several years.

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility Far Site at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota will house four large detector tanks located in deep underground caverns. Construction of the supporting infrastructure required for this project is no complete including installation of a waste rock conveyance system and drill and blast excavation of several supporting drifts and chambers. This paper will discuss the design and construction of these pre-excavation and early works elements, and the overall project schedule as it closes in on commencement of cavern excavation activities.

"The serpentinite massifs of Hitura are located in the municipality of Nivala in Central Finland. The most important sulfide minerals in the ore are pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. The ore body consists of amphibolite rocks in contact with serpentinite against mica gneiss. The mean Ni grade of the ore is about 0.7%, and the highest Ni grades have been encountered in close contact. In general, the inner parts of the ore are strongly serpentinized ultramafite and some sulfides have been converted to mackinawite and valleriite. The degree of alteration varies considerably within the ore body and, correspondingly, the grain size of the sulfides varies as well. In this study, flotation tests were done with samples from different zones of the ore body. The flotation test results on the bench scale and plant scale are discussed in terms of the mineralogical features of the ore. Ores in the North Hitura zone differ from those in the South Hitura zone.IntroductionThe Hitura nickel mine, like the entire Nivala area, is part of the Bothnian Svecokarelian schist zone, where numerous Ni-Cu boulders have been discovered since the early 1930s. The Nivala area has therefore been the subject of exploration activities by the Geological Survey of Finland (GSF) and mining companies. The first period of exploration started in 1936, and the Makola nickel deposit, located 3 km south of the Hitura mine, was discovered by GSF in 1937. About 415,000 tonnes of ore were mined at Makola between 1941 and 1954. In 1937, during the exploration and development stage of the Makola mine, boulder tracing and a geophysical survey revealed a significant ultramafic body with some lowgrade Ni-Cu occurrences in the South Hitura zone.In 1961, GSF continued the exploration program in the area and discovered the North Hitura ultramafic complex and its allied Ni-Cu occurrences. In 1964, Outokumpu Oy bought the property and, after underground exploration, comprehensive mineralogical studies, process research and a feasibility study, production started in 1970 (Isohanni et al., 1985)."

"According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires burning in 9 states. This is considered by experts to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Abandoned mine fires, if left uncontrolled can burn for years and in fact, one of the most well-known mine fires in the US, the mine fire in Centralia, PA, which began in 1962 has been burning for over 55 years. In Centralia, the mine fire won the battle, despite suppression and control efforts, as most of the residents were bought out by the State of Pennsylvania and moved away. However, the world record for the longest-burning coal fire, which may have been started around 6,000 years ago in New South Wales, Australia is still smoldering. Suppressing a coal mine fire requires cooling the hot zones and removing any source of oxygen. If the workings are shallow, the fire zones can be unearthed and the burning rock mass can be quenched on the surface. If the workings are too deep to excavate, then the fire must be fought remotely through boreholes using a variety of agents including water, gas-enhanced foam and grout. Access to surface areas for drilling can be problematic due to topographic and property constraints. When this occurs, large areas of burning may go unaddressed or simply left to burn. Fire Solutions, Inc. has been investigating the use of gas-enhanced foam in concert with directional drilling technology. Gas-enhanced foam has the advantage of using less water and adds inert nitrogen gas to displace oxygen to infiltrate and suppress a fire. Directional drilling has the capability to steer a borehole to a specific place underground. Directional drilling has many advantages over conventional drilling technology as it can provide the least disruption to the ground surface, minimize surface preparation and reclamation costs, multiple sites can be accessed underground from a single site and thus treated simultaneously and it offers increased efficiency because it is not constrained by difficult terrain. This paper discusses the combined use of these two technologies and it is hoped that with the use of these two technologies the efficiency and capability to address mine fires will be significantly improved. INTRODUCTION According to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, Abandoned Mine Land Inventory System, in 2013 there were 98 underground mine fires in 9 states. This is considered to be an underestimate for the actual number of fires nationwide. Many mine fires are started by people burning trash where the coal seam or an abandoned coal mine is close to the surface. Other fire ignition sources include lightning and forest fires. Once ignited, a coal mine fire can easily spread into the remaining coal pillars and mine entries. Once established, the fire creates its own ventilation system supporting further combustion by drawing air down into the workings through unsealed mine shafts, fractures and surface subsidence depressions. As the coal left in the workings from the past mining operations burns, the mine void can collapse, causing subsidence and creating dangerous voids, damaging damage overlying surface structures and roadways. The products of combustion include smoke and noxious fumes such as carbon monoxide gas. These products are released to the atmosphere through fractures that develop within the ground surface, killing vegetation and creating serious health hazards [1]."

"INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Southeast Collector (SeC) is a new 15km long 3.0m internal diameter wastewater tunnel designed by Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) that twins the existing 2.6m diameter York-Durham Sewage System (YDSS) tunnel. Both sewage tunnels are located north of the City of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. The SeC provides much needed conveyance capacity for the rapidly growing York Region population, supporting development until 2036 and increasing sewage system security (Hatch Mott MacDonald and AECOM 2011). Construction of the SeC will also permit flows of the twinned section of the YDSS to be bypassed in order to clean, inspect and carry out any essential maintenance within the YDSS tunnel. Although owned and operated by York Region, the SeC spans two regional municipalities beginning upstream from the intersection of Ninth Line and Rouge Bank Drive in the City of Markham in York Region to the downstream Finch Avenue and Valley Farm Road intersection in the City of Pickering in Durham Region. See Figure 1 for the SeC and YDSS alignment. The project includes 19 shafts and chambers with depths ranging from 8 to 48m in addition to seven facilities supporting the operation and maintenance of the sewer. The construction contract was awarded to Strabag Inc. in July 2011 for $291M CAD. Construction Management services were provided by a joint venture team of Hatch Mott MacDonald and AECOM. Existing York-Durham Sewage System The YDSS tunnel was completed in 1979 and was constructed using an open shielded TBM with ribs and lagging temporary support, followed by installation of a 380mm thick unreinforced cast-in-place (CIP) concrete final lining. The YDSS sewer system has numerous connections that accumulate flows from various urban areas within York Region. The section of the YDSS twinned by the SeC flows under gravity conditions and had been putting a strain on the municipality’s potential for population and development growth having reached its maximum capacity of 420 ML/d. According to the York Region’s Water and Wastewater Master Plan, the existing YDSS would not have been able to handle wet weather flows past 2016 (Genivar and XCG Consultants 2009). The dependability of this section of the YDSS is also of concern because it is the main and critical connection between the sewer systems upstream and the downstream Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP)."

Hydraulic fracturing to precondition the rock mass in high seismic risk environments has great potential. Unfortunately, there are many unanswered questions about how to best implement a hydraulic fracturing program at individual mine sites, and even how to best use our engineering tools to evaluate these plans. To give the hydraulic fracturing field tests at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine the best chance of success, fully-coupled, discontinuum numerical modelling Itasca’s 3DEC code was used together with statistical simulations of the fracture network. For modelling purposes, it was assumed that hydraulic fracturing successfully reduces seismic risk through 1) the creation of hydraulic fractures along a plane at each injection site, and 2) activation of existing discontinuities. A variety of scenarios for the mine were evaluated, which focused on site specific uncertainties (such as the spacing of the pre-existing discontinuities) and practical solutions (such as the hydraulic fracture spacing, selection of injection medium, and hydraulic fracture site location relative to production). The discrete fracture network (DFN) realizations were developed using available statistical data for discontinuities near where hydraulic fracturing was planned.

A virtual reality approach is presented that can aid entities such as mining companies and land use planners in communicating a visual understanding of a mining operation to interested stakeholders, citizens? groups, and public committees. These visualizations are particularly useful in permitting, production planning and mining closures, contributing to accurate communication and evaluation of mine plans, ultimate land use and evaluation of potential design options A case study is presented, that was created using commercially available virtual reality tools, to emphasize the benefits of visualization technologies in the sustainable development of mineral resources.

Over the past several years, state governments have been vigorously refurbishing old health department agencies and smoke control laws in anticipation of pending federal developments. Many states now possess a mature air pollution control administrative organization and a fairly sophisticated set of regulations on air pollution, This developing network of state control legislation and regulation is the machinery which will be called upon to implement federal standards, In order to prevent the wasted effort and resources which inevitably result from hasty action, industry should be in con- tact with local and state control agencies and be familiar with lines of communication to agency representatives. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, both current and pending, is required. Moreover, federal law and future federal air pollution control plans, should be well known. Industrial air pollution control should be geared to a long range plan which utilizes existing technology while at the same the recognizing that today's technology will be improved upon with time, Regulation, too, can be expected to become more stringent. The implications of air pollution control in the Appalachian region of the United States will be felt most strongly by the coal industry of this area. Either directly or indirectly most regulations in these states have a significant bearing on coal mining, processing, utilization or waste disposal. The extent of coal-related activity in the Appalachian States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee can be observed from the data provided in Table I. This data indicates that 86 percent of active bituminous coal mines and 69 percent of bituminous coal production were accounted for by these states. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on current and proposed legislation and regulations on air pollution in the Appalachian states, The information should prove valuable not only to the coal industry but also to industry in general as a means of evaluating both pollution control action that has been taken to date and the course of future control measures. Reference information in the forms of addresses of appropriate agencies and citations to specific state laws and regulations is provided. All information is current as of February, 1969.

A very high-grade calcite deposit located in northern Norway consists of CaCO3 ore with minor silicate and sulphide impurities. Cationic (Tallow-1,3-diaminopropane, Duomeen T) collector has been used in the purification of calcite by flotation with an aim of achieving calcite concentrate for its use in value-added products in a variety of industries. The feasibility of sulphide flotation from calcite by this cationic collector has been initially judged from Hallimond flotation and zeta potential on pure mineral systems and the results illustrate the removal of sulphide from calcite ore at neutral pH region. The adsorption mechanism of diamine on both the sulphide minerals was found to be the same by zeta potential studies. The variations in zeta potential are in good agreement with the adsorption of diamine molecular and ionic species as a function of pH. FTIR studies also showed the adsorption of diamine species in agreement with the zeta potential and Hallimond flotation results. Furthermore, the removal of sulphide impurities with selective flotation by diamine collector was performed in bench-scale flotation with the calcite ore and the results indeed showed that the calcite concentrate could meet the quality requirements for its use in the paper industry for coating and filler purposes.

The implementation of autonomous technologies for production in surface mines demands changes in the existing monitoring and control systems. The present study deals with the concepts involved in the development of a decision support system (DSS) for the supervision of a combined fleet of manned and unmanned equipment operating in a surface mine. The project was carried out as part of an autonomous mining program that lasted from early 2006 until the end of 2008. The objective of the DSS was to achieve short-term planning goals while maintaining safe working conditions. Supervisory tasks become more complex when several autonomous vehicles operate simultaneously alongside manned equipment. The operation center where the DSS was installed allowed autonomous vehicle operations to be controlled while tracking technology reliability experiments performed on control display interfaces and interaction provided design parameters for more complex supervisory systems for autonomous mines. Molybdenite is the world’s principal source of rhenium (Re), a critical element in multiple high-tech applications. However, the Re contents in molybdenite vary by orders of magnitude on scales ranging from single grains to whole deposits. In order to better understand the systematics of this variation and what geochemical factors control molybdenite Re concentration, and hence overall Re resources, we examine global patterns in molybdenite Re contents through a compilation of > 3000 measurements of Re in molybdenite from > 700 mainly ore-bearing moderate- to high-temperature hydrothermal systems of different types. Our results are similar to but expand on those of earlier studies. Rhenium concentration in molybdenite has a lognormal distribution and varies systematically with type of geologic system, intrusive lithology, and Mo grade. The lowest-Re molybdenite occurs in greisens (geometric mean 1 ppm ± a multiplicative standard deviation of 9), quartz vein-hosted W-Sn deposits (2 ± 5 ppm), unmineralized granites and granodiorites (12 ± 8 ppm), intrusion-related deposits (24 ± 8 ppm), and porphyry W-Sn deposits (16 ± 11 ppm). Rhenium is most enriched in molybdenites from volcanic sublimates (23,800 ± 5 ppm), with skarn Fe and Au (560 ± 5 ppm and 540 ± 3 ppm respectively) and porphyry Cu and Cu-Au deposits next (470 ± 4 and 430 ± 7 ppm respectively). Among porphyries, skarns, and quartz vein-hosted deposits, Re is most highly concentrated in molybdenites from Cu and Au systems and its concentration decreases systematically through Cu-Mo, Mo, Sn, and W deposits. In nearly all cases, molybdenites from systems associated with intermediate igneous rocks contain more Re than molybdenites from systems of the same type with more felsic rock associations. The disparity between Re contents of molybdenite in felsic and intermediate systems is largest for porphyries, quartz vein-hosted, and skarn deposits and is near zero for subeconomic or barren granite and granodiorite Mo systems; felsic intrusion-related deposits have slightly higher molybdenite Re than their equivalents associated with intermediate intrusions. In most systems, molybdenite Re content does not correlate with metal grade, but may have an inverse correlation with Au grade in intrusion-related deposits (based on a small number of data points) and does exhibit a strong inverse correlation with deposit Mo grade. Dilution of Re through larger amounts (higher deposit grades) of molybdenite explains about 40% of this correlation, but the relative enrichment of Re in molybdenite from low-Mo deposits must also reflect some selective enrichment of Re/Mo in porphyry Cu systems compared to porphyry Mo systems. We found no evidence for secular increase or other systematic temporal variation in molybdenite Re content. The data regarding the use of molybdenite Re content as a proxy for mantle influence are ambiguous. Nearly all observed empirical correlations can be traced back to differences in redox state and sulfide concentration, the two geochemical factors identified here and by previous experimental work as the controlling influences on Re mobility under hydrothermal conditions. Hydrothermal systems with reducing conditions (W- and Sn-rich) tend to have low molybdenite Re even though compiled whole-rock data indicate that their source rocks have as much or more Re as those of more oxidized systems (e.g., Cu-rich). Vapor-phase exsolution, crustal assimilation, and mixing with external fluids may all enrich molybdenite Re concentrations in individual deposits and deposit types, but their extent and importance in overall hydrothermal concentration of Re is uncertain. Thus, it appears that the available molybdenite Re resource in an ore deposit largely depends on how the deposit’s redox and sulfidation conditions have varied over time and space during the timespan of hydrothermal activity. Oxidized, high-sulfide conditions tend to concentrate Re in molybdenite, whereas reducing conditions tend to leave Re dispersed at low concentrations in the bulk rock.

Coal spontaneous combustion is one of the major disasters in coal mines, and it can have devastating effects on the normal mining and production activities of mines. This paper presents the field investigation, field measurement, data analysis, and formulation of fire-extinguishing measures conducted to extinguish the fire from a coal spontaneous combustion incident that occurred in a high-gas coal mine in China.
