Practical mining aspects should be considered when conducting pillar designs for bord-and-pillar layouts. The current methodology for pillar design will result in increasing pillar sizes with depth. This affects the extraction ratio and will result in onerous ventilation requirements when cutting large pillars. A holistic approach, including all mining engineering requirements, is required to ensure that the rock engineering designs are optimized to ensure efficient mining operations and sustainable production. Bord widths should not only be a function of the rock mass ratings, but should also be selected to fit the specifications of the mechanized equipment. The use of a ‘squat pillar’ formula for hard rock is discussed in the paper and the formula based on the exponents of the Hedley and Grant pillar formula, is explored. The effect of abutments and geological losses on average pillar stress is also explored. These factors must be considered when designing layouts at increasing depths.

The gold deposits of the farms Lisbon and Berlyn in the Eastern Transvaal by V. C. H. R. BRERETON* (Visitor) This paper describes the discovery and recovery of gold, over a period dating back to the 1870s. on the farms Lisbon and Berlyn, situated approxim ately 1I km north-east of Pilgrims Rest. where mining ceased in July 1971. 99 years after gold was first discovered in the Pilgrims Rest and Sabie districts. Included in the paper are accounts of the discovery and mining operations of the Lisbon-Berlyn Company from 1884 to 1890. The operations of small companies and syndicates. the superficial winning of gold by diggers, and the encouraging reports of four mining engineers in 1890 are also mentioned.

Understanding chemical interactions at solid-liquid interfaces have played a pivotal role in improving mineral flotation performance, increasing the rate of mineral crystallisation and profitable leaching of valued minerals and metals. This paper highlights gold leaching with links to surface and interfacial chemical processes occurring, and opportunities to maximise extraction while reducing usage of more recent scarce resources. From the review, there is a significant link between surface and interfacial processes and gold leaching performance. Evidently, gold leaching kinetics could be increased by changing leaching conditions, including manipulating the surface and interfacial interactions. Control of surface and interfaces during gold extraction could enhance rapid, smarter gold extraction and mitigate formation of passivation layers. The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. Geometallurgy represents an integrated approach to mine planning and operation whereby the naturally occurring ore variability and its effects on all key downstream activities in the mine life cycle are considered. Process mineralogy is one of the key components of this integrated approach. This paper focuses on understanding some of the mineralogical variability across the Swartberg Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide ore in South Africa and its consequent effects on flotation performance. This process mineralogy project is motivated by the planned changeover and expansion of the Black Mountain Mines concentrator to process solely Swartberg ore compared to the run-of-mine blend currently being treated at the plant. Eight samples spanning the main lithological units of the ore body are described using quantitative mineral-textural data and bulk sulfide batch flotation performance to establish five process mineralogical or geometallurgical units comprising: quartz-pyroxmangite-magnetite, quartz-amphibolemagnetite, quartz-magnetite, garnet-magnetite-quartzite and mica-quartzite ores. Important mineralogical characteristics affecting Cu, Pb and Zn recovery, grade and selectivity specific to the different ore samples are discussed. Ultimately, the use of ore-specific process mineralogical and geometallurgical knowledge allows for better mine planning and plant optimisation. The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.

"The performance of ground support systems under dynamic loading is typically assessed in a qualitative and subjective manner. As a result, it is difficult to develop an explicit knowledge on the mechanisms of action and interaction of support elements subjected to rockbursts. This paper examines rockbursts that have occurred at Creighton, Copper Cliff, and Coleman mines since 2000, 2004, and 2006, respectively. The mines are located in the Sudbury Basin, in Ontario, Canada. The majority of pertinent information was obtained through on-site field assessments, seismic system records, and numerical elastic stress modelling. Passive monitoring is used to link the evolution of the frequency and severity of rockbursts to the evolution of mining and support practice at the three mine sites. Based on the collected data, ground support elements that enhanced the capacity of support systems to withstand dynamic loads are identified. IntroductionThe selection of appropriate mining methods, extraction sequences, rock mass de-stressing techniques, and ground support systems is of great importance in mitigating the level of rockburst-related risk. In burst-prone conditions, the design of support systems should account for the anticipated dynamic load demand and the capacity of the available support options. Furthermore, an economical design should, implicitly or explicitly, take into consideration the consequences of a rockburst and its impact on worker safety and mine productivity. Stacey (2012) has argued that we have a limited understanding of the mechanisms of rock mass behaviour in seismic conditions. This is compounded by a ‘lack of understanding of the mechanisms of action and interaction of support elements under dynamic loads’ (Stacey, 2012). Consequently, the design of support systems required to manage dynamic loads is usually based on experience. The assessment of the dynamic performance of ground support systems is typically subjected to qualitative (and sometimes subjective) interpretations from ground control personnel."

Flotation is a mineral separation technology that uses the surface hydrophobic difference of valuable minerals and their associated gangue minerals to separate them. The flotation collector adsorbs on the valuable mineral surface to improve its hydrophobicity, and metal ions are usually used as activators to enhance the collector adsorption. Different mineral surfaces show different charging properties and adsorption behaviours with the collector or metal ions. Moreover, the order of adding metal ions and the collector also show significant and different flotation performance for the same mineral. The adsorption or flotation behaviour or both are governed by mineral surface chemistry, such as surface charging and reactivity. In our recent studies, force measurement using atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to study the surface charging and adsorption mechanism of metal ions and collectors. By preparing collector-functionalised AFM tips, AFM can directly measure the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface to determine the anisotropy of mineral surface reactivity. The preparation of collector-functionalised AFM tips provides the foundation for further study of the activation role of metal ion in the collector adsorption. The application of AFM for force measurement in the surface chemistry of mineral flotation can provide important information on developing flotation reagents and lays the foundation for the specific regulation of mineral surface characteristics. This paper details an assessment of stemming practices at a South African opencast coal mine and their influence on ground vibration and air blast. Quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were used for the study. The parameters assessed for the quantitative analyses included stemming length, stemming material type, blast-hole depth, burden, and spacing. Pre-blast data from the mine was analysed to determine the deviation between actual and mine design stemming parameters. Mine design stemming length was also compared to the rule-of-thumb stemming lengths. Peak particle velocity (ground vibration) and air blast data from seismograph stations around the mine was analysed to determine the correlation between stemming length and excessive ground vibration and air blast. The qualitative analysis involved observations of blasting procedures at the mine to determine compliance with mine procedures. Some level of non-compliance of actual stemming parameters to design stemming parameters was found, which initially suggested that non-compliance may have contributed to excessive air blast. However, further analysis of the seismograph results indicated no direct correlation between stemming length and excessive air blast and ground vibration. Since stemming parameters are interrelated, it is crucial that all blasting procedures, including stemming, are executed in accordance with best practice, and recorded accurately. There is a need for digital systems for capturing on-bench blasting parameters, as the currently used manual data recording and reporting systems are inefficient and prone to error. Improvements to blast designs are possible through efficient and accurate data recording and reporting systems.

SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

THAIN* Pre-European gold mining and working in South Africa is a tantalizing field for conjecture. Well over thousand sites have been identified in Rhodesia, but here we have had to reach double figures, judging by published accounts. Geologically, the Transvaal is less amenable primitive exploitation, but it difficult to reject the idea that the knowledge gained to the north did not have its influence south of the Limpopo.

The South African mining industry has committed to achieving a state of zero harm for its workforce, with a strong emphasis on worker health and safety. Among the major safety concerns are falls of ground, a leading cause of injuries and fatalities. Ground-penetrating radar, a non-destructive geophysical method, is recognised for its ability to image structures, fractures, and geological features within the rock mass. However, ground penetrating radar data is often acquired in local coordinates, posing challenges for visualisation in mine computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. This study explores the pivotal role of light detection and ranging data in transforming ground penetrating radar data from local survey coordinates to absolute mine coordinates. A comprehensive georeferencing methodology is presented, providing the stepwise progression from the initial georeferencing of ground penetrating radar data to the ultimate integration of ground penetrating radar and light detection and ranging datasets, resulting in the creation of a ground penetrating radar-light detection and ranging three-dimensional model. The proposed approach not only facilitates the integration of but also offers a practical means of visualising the integrated datasets within commonly used computer-aided design or three-dimensional visualisation software. An essential aspect of this integration is the adoption of non-proprietary data formats, specifically American Standard Code for Information Interchange text files, ensuring broader accessibility and compatibility. The potential for integrating diverse datasets to construct insightful models of the underground mining environment is illustrated. Integration of different datasets has the potential to offer a holistic understanding of the mining environment, providing essential information to decision-makers.

Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

Yeast-derived bola-amphiphiles have attracted considerable attention for their applications in various industrial sectors in recent years. However, only a few studies on this class of surfactant were reported to be relevant to mineral processing applications. In this paper, one of the novel surfactants, acidic glucolipid obtained from Candida bombicola sophorolipids and modified by using Penicillium decumbens naringinase substrate has been evaluated for its interaction with chalcocite and calcite minerals because of a new Cu-ore Nussir deposit in Norway containing calcite impurity. The interaction of glucolipid biosurfactant with copper sulphide and carbonate minerals was investigated with zeta potential, adsorption and FTIR studies, and also by Hallimond tube and bench scale flotation tests using pure minerals and Nussir copper ore, respectively. The results illustrate collector adsorption and flotation of copper sulfides at neutral pH. The bench-scale flotation results demonstrate that copper sulphides can be selectively floated from carbonate and silicate gangue minerals. This study underlines the glycolipid’s high potential for its use as collector for flotation of valuable copper sulphide minerals. Keywords: Flotation, biosurfactants, adsorption

Utilisation of lower-grade (<60 per cent Fe) resources, not utilised in the current products, is crucial to ensure optimal resource utilisation and maintaining/improving future profit margins by reclassifying low-grade material to ore. The purpose of the Sishen Expansion Project (?SEP?) is therefore to investigate the technical and financial viability of producing up to an additional 10 Mtpa of new products at Sishen from material currently classified as low-grade materials. Jigging technology has progressed to a point where Sishen?s 50 to 60 per cent Fe run of mine (?ROM?) material, once considered as waste, can be beneficiated to produce a saleable 64 per cent Fe product. This has been confirmed through appropriate beneficiation testwork. Consequently, Sishen can now produce saleable product from material not currently included in the resource definition, increasing the resource base of the mine significantly and ensuring higher resource utilisation. Mine Planning utilised the geological models to produce detail planning schedules, reflecting the current and SEP plants separately, optimised to comply with product specifications of both the current and SEP plants and to confirm the viability of the low-grade resources identified as SEP feed material. The SEP products specifications have been derived by optimally matching iron ore market requirements with the revised resource base. A 64.0 per cent Fe lump product and a 63.5 per cent Fe fine product are the optimal SEP products. The SEP plant will be able to produce 10Mtpa at an average yield of 60 per cent and a lump to fine ratio of 62 to 38. The plant consists of five major sections namely crushing, material preparation, beneficiation, final product handling and quality control services. Maximum integration with the current Sishen plant was considered. Kumba currently has an agreement with Transnet to rail up to 23.5 Mtpa through the Sishen Saldanha Iron Ore Export Channel (?IOEC?). Transnet and Sishen Iron Ore Company have signed a Definitive Agreement that deals with the expansion of IOEC?s capacity, which increases Kumba?s entitlement from 23.5Mtpa to 35.0Mtpa. The detailed enviro-legal impact assessments for the SEP indicated that the project has low enviro-legal risk as a result of it being a brownfields project incorporated into the current Sishen operations.

"Rio Tinto’s Western Australian expansion, combined with mining within structurally complex geology and increasingly below the water table, presents challenges in effective slope management to ensure safe and economic mining.The Geotechnical Management System (GMS) was developed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) to manage geotechnical risks identified during the design process and implementation, and to ensure feedback based on the ‘as-found’ conditions. The GMS utilizes a risk-based approach to geotechnical risk management and is centred on the geotechnical risk and hazard assessment management system (GRAHAMS). GRAHAMS is used to assess pre- and post-control risk for future potential risks (planned slopes), current risks (as-built slopes), and actual geotechnical hazards (realized risks) identified in the pit. This serves as a core operational risk management tool in identifying and prioritizing key risk sectors and management of critical controls. The system’s database reporting functionality supports effective communication of operational risks to operational personnel, as well as reporting the risk profile across operations to management.A rigorous engagement process between design engineers and sitebased engineers is implemented to ensure that key design assumptions, limitations, risks, and opportunities are understood by the site teams. This information, together with mine plan schedule details, is used to assess the design risk and develop appropriate controls. These controls typically include slope performance monitoring and slope reconciliation. The design feedback loop is closed through sharing of key slope performance and reconciliation data with the design teams.The GMS has been successfully implemented in RTIO pits and is fundamental to successful geotechnical slope management. Improved characterization of design assumptions has allowed for re-assessment of the pit design and improved hazard management in high-risk pits. The GMS, GRAHAMS, and other processes reduce the incidence of unexpected slope instability. Improved understanding of rock mass conditions has allowed for economic optimization through redesign of slopes, allowing for an improved understanding of risk and fewer unexpected conditions (surprises), hence an increased realized value."

The Talvivaara deposits are located in Eastern Finland, within the Kainuu Schist Belt. These polymetallic sulphide deposits are of relatively low grade, but bioheapleaching enables economically profitable nickel extraction from the ore. Zinc, cobalt, and copper are also produced. Talvivaara?s production process begins with large-scale open-pit mining and four crushing stages, followed by stacking of the ore in bioleaching heaps. The ore is first leached for 13?14 months on the primary leach pad, after which the leached ore is reclaimed, conveyed, and re-stacked on the secondary heap pad. After secondary leaching, the barren ore will remain on the secondary heaps permanently. In the metals recovery process, the metals are precipitated from the pregnant leaching solution. Construction of the process was begun in spring of 2007 and first metal sulphides were produced at the plant in October 2008. The development of the bioheapleaching process was begun in a 17 000t on-site pilot heap operated during 2005?2008 and has continued in the industrial heap. At industrial scale, the development measures have focused on improving the permeability and aeration of the heap. Challenges with crushing and aerations systems at the beginning of industrial-scale leaching delayed the increase in metal recovery, but after the first two operational years the leaching results have improved significantly and the process is performing as targeted.
