The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental degasification project in Island Creek Coal Co.'s Virginia Pocahontas No. S mine. Methane from the overlying Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed was entering mine workings in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed through fractures in the roof rock. Small-diameter (l-S/B-inch) holes were drilled into the overlying coalbed to reduce the gas pressure and intercept methane flows, which were piped to the surface through an underground 6-inch-diam steel pipeline. The total methane flow rate from the vertical holes averaged 150,000 ft3/day for the first month. Methane flows into the mine were reduced by 47 pet, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of this form of degasification in reducing ventilation requirements and providing a safer working environment.

"A gratifying decrease is noticeable in the number of men killed in the coal minas of the United States during the past six months as compared to the quantity of coal produced.During July last year, when 221 men lost their lives, the production of coal was over 50 million tons. In January, 1920, the production had increased to 56 million tons, or 11 per cent, while the fatalities, instead of increasing proportionately, actually decreased to 166, or nearly 15 per cent. Nor is this decrease a mere accident or coincidence peculiar to the month of January, as may be seen from the following table.From the figures shown above it may be observed that the average monthly production for January and the five months immediately preceding, was 49,500,000, or only 2 per cent below that for July, while the average number of men killed was 183, or a decrease of over 17 per cent."

This trainer?s guide is designed as a reference manual. The purpose is to offer information and examples to skills trainers to assist them in structuring training for new operators of Walk-Thru roof bolting machines. Trainers can use this manual as a resource for helping trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. In this sense, the guide is not prescriptive. It is designed to offer information and trigger ideas on what might be done to accelerate learning to those who are new to the roof-bolting task. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. They can integrate roof control plans, company policies and procedures, and operators? manuals from the manufacturers of the original equipment into this guide. Every trainee is different and will come to the job with varying levels of relevant knowledge and skills. The trainer?s decisions on where to start, how to organize the on-the-job and classroom training portions, and when and how to offer different aspects of the training will be based on (1) a pretraining assessment of the trainee?s knowledge and skills and (2) the trainer?s experience in conducting skills training. The ?Skill Check? section might be useful for deciding where training should start among miners who have underground experience but limited knowledge of roof-bolting techniques. Every job carries a learning curve and likely has a number of ?teachable moments? where significantly new knowledge and skills can be learned.

In August 1984 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study of the mineral resource development potential of the Badger Canyon-Antelope Creek area, within the Boulder-Pioneer wilderness study area, about 5 miles northeast of Ketchum, 10. The purpose of this study was to investigate in greater detail an area which was designated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Bureau as having a moderate mineral resource potential for zinc, molybdenum, lead, and silver, and a low potential for copper. One hundred twenty-eight soil samples were taken along a 6,2S0-ft traverse on the ridge separating Badger Canyon and Antelope Creek. 5 Five rock samples were collected from old prospect pits and mineralized outcrops. All samples were analyzed for gold. Silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, antimony, vanadium, and mercury. The metal concentrations in the soil samples along the traverse are irregularly distributed. Samples collected near old prospect pits tend to be high in lead and zinc, undoubtedly a reflection of underlying galena-and sphalerite-bearing quartz veins. All of the copper and mercury values in the soils are less than the detection limit, as are most of the lead, molybdenum, and antimony values. Except for lead and zinc values, the metal concentrations in the rock samples are low. Galena and sphalerite were observed in quartz vein samples collected at the old prospects. The results of the study indicate that the galena-sphalerite-bearing quartz veins and veinlets are too narrow, widely-spaced, and low in metal values to be economic. Low concentrations of metals in the soil and rock samples, combined with the lack of major mining activity in the past, indicate that the area has a low likelihood for economic development.

The Bureau of Mines substantially reduced shale degradation in a coal mine by two spray coat applications of a water-base epoxy sealant. More than 12,700 square feet of passageways were treated, and in 18 months only one failure occurred. This failure was due to improper spray application, Material costs averaged 13 cents per square foot, and labor costs were 7 cents per square foot. Labor included moving all materials into the mine, the setup time for each of the areas coated, and application of coatings.

The 23d annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 75 producers in 17 States re-ported commercial production of peat in 1956. Forty-seven producers reported humus production, 19 reported reed-sedge peat, 17 reported moss peat, and 1 reported muck. This total exceeds the number of active operations, but several producers reported recovering more than one type of peat. Fifty-five percent of the total production was reported as peat humus, 30 percent as reed-sedge peat, and 15 percent as moss peat. A negligible amount was reported as other types. More than one-fourth of the total output was raw peat with no preparation, other than having been air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, or kiln drying.

The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. Relative enthalpies of V20S from 298.15 to 1,101.0 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide data needed for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter. A sharp melting point was found at 951 K, with [~~ = 15.690 kcal/ mol ] for the standard enthalpy of melting. Tabulated values are given at selected temperature increments between 298.15 and 1,500 K for the standard relative enthalpy [(HO -H~98),] heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)/T]. Standard relative enthal-pies are also given in equation form and combined with data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

The investigation reported in this paper is one of several included in a broad program of developing new or improved concentration processes for the oxidized and partly oxidized deposits of lead and zinc, A sample from the Playter lease, Newton County, Mo., containing pyromorphite was successfully concentrated by fatty acid flotation to a grade of over 62 percent lead. Owing to the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead at that grade was limited to 44 percent. DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY OF PROPERTY The mineral pyromorphite is a chlorophosphate of lead containing 76.4 percent lead, and, although it occurs frequently in association with other lead minerals, it is considered a minor ore mineral of lead. The manner of occurrence of oxidized lead minerals, including pyromorphite, which frequently are no larger in grain size than the clay with which they are found, militates both against development of a simple beneficiation process and high recovery. The profitable exploitation of such deposits depends not only on a successful treatment procedure but a highly favorable metal market as well. For these, and perhaps other reasons, very little research has been done on the recovery of pyromorphite from its deposits.

The Bureau of Mines, investigated a cyanidation-carbon adsorption technique for extracting gold from arsenopyrite concentrates. Agitation leach experiments were conducted on 85-pct-minus-35-mesh gravity concentrates containing 21.8 oz gold and 6.4 oz silver per ton. Results obtained in leaching the concentrates showed that 96.9 pct gold and 90.7 pct silver extraction could be achieved in 96 hours of agitation. Gold and silver were recovered from the resulting pregnant solution by exposure to granular activated carbon in a countercurrent system. Carbon loadings of 2,556 oz of gold and 502 oz of silver per ton were achieved. These loadings are significantly higher than heretofore thought practical.

The experimental blast furnace has attracted increasing interest during the past decade as a practical means for investigating a broad range of blast-furnace smelting problems. Under experimental-furnace conditions, information can be obtained with less expenditure of time and raw materials and, therefore, at lower cost than comparable information could be obtained under industrial operating conditions. Furthermore, the experimental furnace may be operated beyond the range of smooth operation, even to failure, to delineate the limits of operability. Such deviation from normal operating practice would be economically intolerable in industrial operations where production and operating stability might be disrupted. The Federal Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace at Bruceton, Pa., near Pittsburgh, has been operated and under development since 1951. However, the usefulness of this experimental data to industrial practice was somewhat nebulous in early experiments, and the correlation of the experimental blast furnace with the industrial blast furnace was not known.

The airflow and methane distribution patterns developed in an equipment-free entry 6.5 feet high and 12 feet wide, ventilated by line brattice operated blowing to or exhausting from the face, were determined by the Bureau of Mines for varying conditions. Results of these studies show that blowing line brattice systems of face ventilation are more effective than comparable exhaust systems. The face ventilating efficiency of any line brattice system is dependent upon the method of ventilation, the face distance, the tight rib distance, the volume of air delivered to the end of the line brattice, and the volume of methane released at the face. Experimental results indicate that maximum face ventilation efficiency is achieved when the inby terminus of the line brattice is installed 5 feet from the face and at a distance less than one-third the entry width from the nearest rib. Analyses of data are based upon the ability of a face ventilation system to dilute methane in the immediate face area.

"INTRODUCTION The Miscellaneous Minerals Division of the War Production Board requested the Bureau of Mines to investigate the Gallatin corundum property as a possible source of corundum, which was in short supply due to the war. The Gallatin corundum property, also known as the ""Fuller mine"", the ""Montana Corundum mine"", and as the ""Old Qorundum mine"" was first examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer 2/ in July 1943. Bureau of Mines work on the property started October 11, 1943, was recessed May 5, 1944, and was resumed in October 1944 when the diamond-drilling program started. The project was completed February 7, 1945. The data obtained are given in this report.The Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey in the spring of 1943 and mapped the area the following autumn. The results of these surveys are contained in a memorandum report prepared in December 1943.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. This report is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at various mines in the United States. It describes operations at the Black Rock mine, Wah Chang Mining Corp., Mono County, Calif. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods, practices, and costs. The Black Rock tungsten mine of the Wah Chang Mining Corp. is 33 miles north of Bishop, Calif., in the Benton Range, Mono County, Calif. The property was acquired in August 1950 and a well-planned program of exploration, development, and exploitation resulted in a good production record with low costs. Operations were halted in July 1957, about 6 months after suspension of the tungsten purchase program by the Federal Government.

This is the second of a series of publications that describes the progress of mechanical longwall coal mining in the United States in which a German coal planer was employed.3/ Details of the equipment, a description of its operation, and the results obtained in mining the experimental panel were published in the preceding report. Experimental mining with the planer in the first panel showed an improvement in performance over conventional mining methods at the coal company's Stotesbury 11 mine. The work, which was begun on an experimental basis, soon proved successful, and the coal company purchased the equipment for continued use. Two panels, adjacent to the first, were developed and mined with the planer. Each of these panels was shorter than the preceding one because water seepage from a surface creek limited development. On completion of mining in the third panel, the planer equipment was moved by the cooperating company to a nearby mine operated in the same coal bed where a large area of coal suitable for planer mining is available.

The Bureau of Milts studied repetitive batch electrowinning of molybdenum from molybdic oxide ) to determine the effects upon the electrolyte life, purity of metal product , and overall cell performance. The electrolyte consisted of 54.0 weight-percent sodium tetraborate (Na2B407), 23.6 weight-percent sodium chloride (NaC1), 14.9 weight-percent sodium fluoride (NaF), and 7.5 weight-percent Mo03. The feed materials were pure and technical-grade Mo03. Electrolysis was conducted at l,000° C in a graphite cell in an atmosphere of air and carbon oxides. Electrolyte degradation did not occur during repetitive winning of molybdenum from pure Mo03 in an 8-day (5,400-ampere-hour) period of operation. Electrowon metal contained <0.1 percent total impurities. The electrode configuration is a key factor in the direct conversion of technical-grade Mo03 to metal by repetitive cyclic electrolysis. The best configuration found was a cathodic crucible and a central anode. Metal purity of 99.8 percent and a current efficiency of 91 percent were maintained until the combined impurity buildup the electrolyte reached 4.7 percent silicon, l.0 percent aluminum, and 0.6 percent iron. One pound of molybdenum was produced per 1.5 pounds of solvent salts employed. About 25 percent of the initial NaCl and NaF contents of the electrolyte were lost owing to volatilization and crucible penetration.

"The microscopic work described below was engaged in primarily into ascertain the approximate proportions in which the copper sulphides existed in the ore examined, and by a comparison of the results obtained from a study of both head are tailing samples to supply data which might be of value in treating the ore by flotation. Incidentally, the physical characteristics and association of the sulphides were noted in order to determine the possible relation or bearing of these features on the present conditions of treatment. Since the copper in the ore occurred as three distinct sulphide minerals - chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite each containing copper in different proportions, there appeared to be little or no possibility of obtaining the desired information by chemical methods of determination.Type of material examinedThe material examined was in the crushed condition and was said to be representative of the flotation feed or heads and the resulting tailing. No hand samples of the ore were examined nor any account taken of the physical condition and association of the minerals in place, because the possible value of the analytical results depended on conditions as they existed in the crushed ore. As the problems under consideration dealt only with the sulphide minerals, especially those of copper, the products from screen sizing were concentrated by hand panning and the gangue discarded. The concentrate obtained consisted almost entirely of the sulphide minerals, since the panning had been very carefully done. The object of this procedure was to obtain a sufficient quantity of high-grade sulphide material, from the sample of each screen size selected for examination, to permit its being so prepared for examination as to be representative of the physical characteristics exhibited by a large number of sulphide grains from each respective size, In the tests and investigations carried on by the company' treating the ore the following sizes had been used in tabulating data and basing conclusions:+48, +65, +100, +150, +200, and -200. These same sizes were used in the microscopic investigation, since the results obtained thereby could be most readily utilized for comparison with the results obtained in previous experimental work, together with deductions based on actual concentration of the ore on a commercial scale."
