ABSTRACT Stope backfilling is a common operation in many underground mines, which requires a barricade at the base of the stope near the drift entrance to retain the backfill in place. In this paper, the distribution of pore-water pressure in barricades made of waste rock is analyzed. An analytical solution is introduced and applied to estimate the pore-water pressure along the base and full height of the barricade. Results show that the analytical solution generally accurately predicts the distribution of pore-water pressure obtained from the numerical calculations, especially in the upstream part of the barricade, where it is most critical.

The effect of sulfuric acid concentration on the extractions of arsenic and copper in the catalyzed batch leaching of an enargite concentrate was studied. The acid concentrations studied were 60, 45, 30 and 15 g/L. The experimental series yields maximum copper extractions of 96 to 98% in an interval of 81 - 185 h leaching time for 60 - 15 g/L initial sulfuric acid concentration; all the copper extractions plateaued after these values; the rates and plateaus of copper extraction are increased with higher acid concentrations. Arsenic extractions reached maximum values of 89% in 57 hours, 57% in 49 hours, 33% in 25 hours, and 25% in 112 hours respectively; these maximum values were followed by a steep decrease in arsenic concentration, which indicates a precipitation event occurs in the process. According to the literature and process conditions, the arsenic precipitates obtained are iron arsenates similar to scorodite. The stability of the residues was tested using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) from EPA; the residues for the four concentration levels passed the TCLP test, reporting arsenic leaching values below 1 mg/L.

"The effect of thermomechanical processing (TMP) including cold working by tension or rolling before aging on mechanical properties and a dispersion of secondary phase particles of an AA2519 alloy (Al–5.64Cu–0.33Mn–0.23Mg–0.15Zr–0.11Ti–0.09V–0.08Fe–0.01Si (wt. %)) was examined. It was shown that the use of tension to impart pre-strain =10% in the alloy provides the best combination of properties in peak aging condition of the material. The AA2519T87 alloy processed by tension exhibits the yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of 425.4±2.4, 475±2.4, 12.1±0.4, respectively. The one pass rolling leads to -5% decreases in yield stress and –20% decreases in ductility. Dislocations serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?'-phase precipitation. The positive effect of tension is attributed to the formation of more homogeneous dislocation structure, uniform distribution of ?'-phase particles with higher aspect ratio. Precipitation of the O–phase plates on {111}a habit plane was detected. In addition it was shown that the low angle boundaries are heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?' and O particles.INTRODUCTION Precipitation-hardened alloys are a commercially important group of the materials because their mechanical properties can be modified by treating and changing the microstructure. Age-hardenable aluminum alloys belonging to the Al–Cu–Mg system are widely used due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance attributed to the highly efficient strengthening by the ?'-phase (Palmer, StJohn, Nie, & Qian, 2017). An AA2519 alloy exhibiting superior mechanical properties among high-strength Al–Cu alloys (2XXX-serie) due to minor Mg additives. It is known that, in alloys with high Cu/Mg ratio (=5.6) the classic precipitation sequence (Palmer et al., 2017; Wang & Starink, 2005; Wang et al., 2010) of supersaturated solid solution (SSSS) decomposition occurs: SSSS ? In order to recycle valuable metals from silver separated residue, a novel method using alkaline smelting at low temperature was proposed. The main factors affecting the main metal recovery such as the smelting temperature, smelting time, liquid-to-solid ratio and alkali addition were investigated comprehensively. The behavior of the main metal elements, such as Pb, Sn, Sb and Bi in silver separated residue was also discussed. The results indicated that amphoteric metals such as Pb and Sn can be smelted into the melt, while other metal elements, such as Sb and Bi were left in the residue.

In the processing of rare earth ores, a pure, mixed rare earth chloride solution is usually produced and used as the feed to solvent extraction circuits to separate the individual rare earths. Cerium(III) may be separated from the other rare earths by oxidising it to cerium(IV), which precipitates as cerium(IV) hydroxide in chloride liquors. This oxidation step may be inserted either before rare earth separation by solvent extraction or between solvent extraction circuits. Although oxidation of cerium by sodium hypochlorite has been known for many years, detailed conditions for oxidation are not readily available. Mg micropowders generated by gas atomisation of a magnesium melt with argon were mixed and ball milled with ceramic nanoparticles prepared by laser-induced gas phase reaction. The materials were then hot extruded. Specimens were deformed in tensile as well as compression tests at temperatures between 20 and 300 °C at a constant initial strain rate. The flow stress is significantly influenced by the test temperature. The yield stress decreases with temperature. This decrease and the flat character of the stressstrain curves at elevated temperatures indicate possible contributions of softening processes. The materials studied exhibit high-damping characteristics. The results are analysed and possible mechanisms are discussed.

"The Davis tube test has been used for many years as a laboratory method for determining the magnetic iron re-coverable from a magnetite iron orebody. This paper de-scribes a method for determining the recoverable iron from ores of the Labrador Trough type, with the usua1 flow sheet utilizing spirals followed by magnetic separation.The mechanical structure of a metamorphosed iron ore, resulting from recrystallization over long periods of time, is the basis for the laboratory method developed. Similarities between the structures of such recrystallized ores and the structure of annealed and recrystallized steel are noted.A laboratory technique to determine the size of the different grains of gangue and iron ore minerals is de-scribed and the application of this information to arrive at recommended grinding techniques and flow sheets is demonstrated. The use of the method to determine recoverable iron in such ores is compared to actual iron recovery in the pilot-plant and commercial concentrations of the same ore.The use of a specified lower limit of recoverable iron as determined by this method, in order to design open-pit limits, achieves practical results when compared to designing a pit based on an arbitrary lower limit of total soluble iron. The Ungava Iron Ore deposits are used in giving an example of the resulting pit design changes."

Abstract -The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the F1avrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 30Jo Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of F1avrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

"The neutralization process of SO2 from coal burning plants is a well-defined technology using limestone to form CaSO4 according to the following reaction: CaCO3 + SO2(g) + 1/2O2(g) = CaSO4 This paper presents the results of a study carried out to validate the option of capturing SO2 using gases from a non-ferrous smelter; SO2 content was up to 12% using a three-stage fluidized bed reactor. The difference in SO2 content affects equilibrium conditions and kinetics, rendering a direct extrapolation of the high efficiency achieved for low SO2 content impossible. The R&D program consisted of a laboratory study using a semi-pilot operation of a one-stage fluidized bed reactor and the construction and operation of a three-step reactor prototype. Results show that the reaction proceeds according to the unreacted core model that imposes a compromise between CaCO3 conversion and SO2 capture. For high SO2 capture, the calcine from the reactor contained CaSO4 and CaO. A complete capture of SO2 from gases with 8 vol.% can be achieved with a mean reaction time of two hours at 800°C."

Newmont Mining Corporation?s Carlin (?Carlin?) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (?PTI?) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study. Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load. The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾? material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size. For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study.

"Absolute magnetite contents were determined for asbestos specimens in various stages of milling by using a Faraday-type thermomagnetic balance. Comparison of these results with magnetic ratings (MR) supplied by the mining companies cooperating in this study reveals strong scatter. The main cause of this scatter is thought to be that the MR values were obtained in magnetic fields well below the saturating field of magnetite (5,000 oe). However, only the saturation moment is an intrinsic property and consequently must be used for the purpose of obtaining reliable estimates of the magnetite content. Curie points indicate that virtually pure magnetite and possibly Ni3Fe is present in all samples, and another phase, probably (Cr, Al) magnetite, is present in a few samples. The susceptibility in fields stronger than 5,000 oe is positive and falls in the normal paramagnetic range, whereas sy nthetic chrysotile exhibits weak diamagnetism. This suggests that, as a general rule, the least adulterated natural chrysotile concurs with the samples showing the smallest positive susceptibility above 5,000 oe. The magnetite appears to increase in quantity with a decrease in fibre length and to be somewhat more uniform in distribution for samples showing substantial fiberization (opening of the fibres)."

In this paper, the effect of magnesium and strontium additions on the heat treatment behaviour of cast A319,2 alloy was investigated, Permanent mold samples were heat treated at 495 °C for 4 and 24 h, then quenched in hot water and aged at 180 °C and 220 °C for different temperatures, It is found that multiple aging peaks are present in the age-hardening curves of Al-Si-Cu alloys, mainly when Mg and Mg-Sr are added, The results of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) observations reveal that the age-hardening behaviour is related to the precipitation sequence of alloys, For the Al-Si-Cu alloy, the first aging peak is the result of the high-density GP zones, while the subsequent peaks arise from metastable phases, Obvious intervals during the transition from GP zones to metastable phases may be the main reason of the formation of multiple aging peaks, It is seen that addition of Mg (-0,40 wt %) leads to the precipitation of coarse Al5Mg8SioCu2 particles. When modifying the high Mg alloys, Cu-intermetallics segregate in areas away from the growing Al-Si eutectic regions, Modification with strontium retards the precipitation of the silicon out of the matrix.

PACIFIC PETROLEUMS, Ltd. first discovered commercial quantities of gas in the Peace River area in 1952. Development of gas wells in this area is quite ex-pensive due to low penetration rates. To improve the economics, the potential of the wells in many cases had to be increased. At that time, well stimulation was still in its infancy in Canada and in this area, in particular, no treatment of any consequence had been attempted. Therefore, trial-and-error was the only means available to determine the stimulating technique that would give optimum results. Various fluid treatments were available and these were used wherever the application was warrant-ed. This paper covers acid fracture and explosive treatments as carried out on various gas-bearing horizons.

This paper describes flotation test work conducted over the past several years at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, on the radioactive quartz-pebble conglomerate ores of the Elliot Lake area of Ontario. The purpose of this work has been to produce a uranium flotation concentrate for sub-sequent leaching operations. The results of earlier investigations are summarized and correlated with the results of mineralogical studies of the ores and flotation products. The results of recent pilot-plant investigations by flotation, as well as by gravity concentration followed by flotation of the gravity tailings, are given. The principal collector used for uranium flotation was a tall oil fatty acid, and the indicated total cost of all reagents ranged from 21 to 31 cents per ton of ore treated.

Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) operates a metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracey, Canada. In the Ore Preparation Plant (OPP), ilmenite ore is roasted through four parallel rotary kilns generating 95% of the plant wide sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions. RTFT proactively set an annual emission cap for SO2 to be achieved by 2015. To achieve this targeted SO2 reductions, a technology evaluation and selection exercise was carried out, followed by detailed engineering and implementation. After a detailed evaluation of SO2 scrubbing technologies, the Circulating Dry Scrubber (CDS) system was selected as the most appropriate desulphurization system for this application. The system was implemented and commissioned from 2013 to 2015. General performance testing conducted in May 2015 demonstrated that the system achieved and surpassed the anticipated design values in terms of SO2 removal efficiency and hydrated lime utilisation. This paper summarizes the SO2 technology selection process, design features of the selected technology, project implementation and final performance testing of the SO2 abatement system.

Recent research on the development of erosion resistant coatings has been directed to the finite element modelling of the behavior of coating and substrate, and their interface under the impact of eroding particles. The approach presented in this paper is based on advanced computer simulation techniques using ABAQUS/Explicit to investigate stress and strain at the surface and at the coating/substrate interface of multilayer coatings under single particle impact. It was found previously that solid particle erosion mechanisms are predominantly governed by the kinetic energy of the impacting particles. However, recent modelling efforts revealed that effects of various material models could be also significant. Therefore, different material models representing relevant coating and substrate properties were investigated and the effects of these models on the coating/substrate response were studied. Particularly, differences between elastic, elastic-plastic and brittle cracking model responses were assessed.

The cleaning of copper smelting slag requires magnetite and cuprous oxide reduction. The slag reduction with coke, injected coal powder or bunker oil is strongly endothermic and requires heat generation by fuel combustion or the use of electric energy. The reduction of fayalitic slag with calcium carbide is slightly exothermic and the formed calcium silicate modifies the slag. Thus, the additional energy is required only for covering furnace heat losses. Results of crucible scale tests showed the rate of slag reduction approximately five times higher in comparison of the slag reduction with coke under the same conditions. It seems that the effect of exothermic reaction and slag modification with CaO at the reaction interface results in very high rate of slag reduction. Industrial scale tests carried out in the Anglo-American Chagres Smelter demonstrated the possibilities of effective reduction and cleaning of the slags from a flash smelter and Peirce-Smith converters in a Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace. The slag reduction was carried out without any reductant or stirring gas injection, simply by calcium carbide charging through a furnace mouth, and was very fast.
