Wood preservation may be defined as the art of protecting wood from decay. In its broadest sense, however, it includes a much wider field. It might be more properly de-fined as the art of protecting wood from destructive agents, such as decay, insects, marine borers, mechanical wear, etc. The earliest data on record for the preservation of organic bodies is found in Egyptian manuscripts. The bodies which we call mummies were impregnated with antiseptics, of which the principal were natrum (sodium sesqui-carbonate), sodium chloride, and sodium sulphate. After being steeped in the solution, they were subjected to either a boiling or baking process in a bituminous preparation. The first attempts in Europe to preserve timber were made by the Greeks and Romans. They extracted essential oils from the juniper and cypress trees, and either rubbed these oils into the wood they wished to preserve, or bored thousands of small holes in the wood and poured the preservative oil into the holes. The famous statues of Jupiter and Diana were carved out of wood. The ceremony of pouring in the preservative oil by the High Priests was a religious pageant of great importance, of which there are many records.

"Abstract - The Meadowbank gold deposits are hosted by a series of polydeformed and metamorphosed auriferous iron formations located in the Neoarchean Woodburn Lake group, western Churchill province, Nunavut. The supracrustal rocks in the Meadowbank area consist of a thick sequence of intermediate-composition volcanic rocks with intercalated iron formation, ultramafic volcanic rocks, and quartzite to quartz arenite. U-Pb geochronology gives an interpreted age of 2711 ± 3 Ma for the host strata at Meadowbank.The intermediate volcanic rocks are predominately volcaniclastic and have a geochemical composition that is consistent with an active continental margin setting. Iron formation deposition was coeval with the intermediate volcanism, as indicated by incorporation of volcanic detritus in the chemical precipitate. The geochemistry of the iron formation indicates that it precipitated from a fluid that at one time was at high temperature (>250°C), reducing, and likely acidic. Intercalated ultramafic rocks rarely show spinifex textures and have trace element ratios that are consistent with mantle plume-related undepleted mantle asthenosphere, likely recording episodic mantle upwelling associated with rifting in an active continental margin. The contact between the ultramafic volcanic rocks and the overlying quartz arenite is a disconformity marked by a quartz pebble conglomerate. However, similar geology on the structural hanging wall and footwall of the contact suggests that the conglomerate does not represent a significant hiatus in deposition, and is more likely a prograding terriginous siliciclastic unit.Three metamorphic events are recognized. The first, M1, is a cryptic greenschist facies event that is pre-D2. The second event, M2, is a mid-greenschist to amphibolite facies, syn-D2 event. M3 is the last event recognized, and is a post-tectonic greenschist facies event that is regional but inhomogeneous in extent, possibly reflecting thermal aureoles around post-tectonic 1.7 to 1.8 Ga Nueltin granites. The structural geology of the area is complex with four phases of deformation recognized, two of which had a significant effect on the geometry of the deposit. All of these regional events are interpreted as Paleoproterozoic in age. Relationships between deformation fabrics and mineralization, as well as the overall geometry of the mineralized envelopes, suggest that the deposit formed during syn- to late-D2. Superimposed on the mineralization are D4 structural elements that postdate gold mineralization.The main control on gold mineralization is replacement of magnetite by pyrrhotite and pyrite in high-strain corridors. The composition of amphiboles and chlorites associated with gold mineralization is remarkably consistent and shows no spatial or temporal variation, suggesting that it was buffered by the iron-rich nature of the host rocks. The bulk metasomatic effect on the intermediate volcanic rocks is characterized by the addition of K2O and the loss of CaO, Na2O, and MgO, with little variation in the total iron content. The elemental losses are likely the result of destruction of feldspars, stilpnomelane, and ferroactinolite, which are relatively common in the unmineralized rocks, and the formation of sericite, chlorite, and grunerite."

The goal of this work was to select an appropriate electrode for dummy load of diesel engine in fully salt-water in the DESA factory. The electrochemical corrosion rate of general structural steel, commercial pure aluminum and cathode copper calculated as weighting, volumetric and commercial in fully salt-water by city power. After several tests and then applying the fuzzy logic method, it was determined that general structural steel is the best selection for this purpose.

This paper reports the effect of using High Density Poly-Ethylene (HDPE)/coke blends on the reduction behaviour of Mn3O4 to MnO at 1000°C. The results suggest that CH4 release increases with increasing HDPE addition. The results show that the rapid release of methane, over only the initial five minutes, limited the interaction of Mn3O4/MnO with CH4. With the devolatilisation of HDPE there was increased porosity in samples containing HDPE, assumed to be the major factor in differences of reduction rates.

A modified electrochemical noise (EN) technique has been applied to monitor corrosion wear of TiN-coated ASP23 steel and TiN-coated AISI 316 stainless steel sliding against corundum in 0.5 M H2SO4. Experimental results show that the EN technique can sensitively detect potential and current variations during a corrosion-wear process. Corrosion-wear mechanisms of TiN coatings depend on their substrate properties. If the substrate is passive, such as AISI 316 stainless steel, the potential and current variations reflect the properties of the coating. Depassivation and repassivation alternately take place on the tribo-activated wear area during the steady-state phase. If the substrate is active, such as ASP23 tool steel, the electrochemical noise is dominated by dissolution of the substrate at the pinholes and the hydrogen evolution all over the exposed surface.

ABSTRACT; The shaft bottom junction in a mine ventilation system is an important source of shock loss due to the combined effect of bend and area change. The occurrence of high-volume ?ow rates through this con?guration can potentially result in high energy losses. The current research examines the process of shock loss at a characteristic shaft bottom junction of an underground coal mine. Investigations are per-formed on both laboratory-scale models and three-dimensional computational ?uid dynamics (CFD) simulations, under both exhausting and forcing shaft bottom conditions. The effects of the plat roughness and the shaft bottom length on the shock loss factor values are also examined. The studies show that the combined effect of bend and area changes that occur at the shaft bottom junction results in shock loss factors that are much higher than those values resulting from abrupt area change only. The transition from a smooth wall condition to an unlined rough airway condition (relative roughness, e/d = 0.112) can increase the shock loss factors by 40%. The effect of shaft bottom length on the shock loss factor has not been clearly established due to con?icting results produced by scale model studies and the CFD simulations.

THE gold deposits of the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, in the Bridge River district of British Columbia, are closely associated with a long, narrow intrusive body of extremely variable composition, outcropping on the northeast side of Cadwallader creek and lying almost entirely within the property boundaries of the two companies. Other masses of the same type of intrusive rock are found in the district, more or less along the line of the main axis of the Pioneer-Bralorne in trusive, and have associated with them variable amounts of gold-quartz mineralization (Figure 1). The ore deposits of the district have been the subject of investigation by officers of the Geological Survey of Canada at various times during the past 25 years, and articles on the geology and mines of the district have been published by various individuals in technical journals. "Gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanide leaching have been investigated for over a century. The variation in the severity of the problem from one ore to another has led to a range of different processes being implemented at different mine sites. Most commercial options utilise one or more of the following processes: roasting, carbon pre-flotation, organic blinding, CIL, chlorine passivation, pressure oxidation, biological passivation, elevated temperature CIL, RIL and thiosulfate. This paper provides a background to identify the most appropriate process or combination of processes for a particular ore. It also presents information on how these processes may be implemented, drawing on information in the literature and from current or recent applications at operations such as the following: Stawell, Kumtor, Penjom, Twin Creeks, Macraes Flat, Kittilä, Fosterville, Inata, Carlin, Goldstrike, and Jerritt Canyon. Various process options have been dismissed, or deemed unsuccessful due to limited knowledge available on the strengths and weaknesses of the different options and their implementation. The authors have collectively been involved in flowsheet development and project implementation in four commercial plants that have treated preg-robbing ores.INTRODUCTION Cyanide processing has been the mainstay of gold recovery for well over a century. It is generally a very effective process with over 90% recovery on free milling ores, but complex and refractory ores may only give 0–50% recovery with conventional processing (La Brooy et al., 1994). People have written about gold losses to natural carbonaceous matter during cyanidation for over a century e.g. Feldtmann, (1915). The earliest reports related to African operations, but the issue has since been reported in Canada, North and South America, Australia, Russia and China. The phenomenon is usually referred to as ‘preg-robbing’ dating from the times before the use of granular activated carbon for gold recovery, when gold was lost from the pregnant solution before it could be separated from the leach solids and recovered by cementation. Many excellent reviews have been published e.g. Dunn et al. (2013), summarising the options considered and where they have been applied commercially."

The rock breakage process in drilling is a main source of noise in roof bolting operations, especially when hard rocks are encountered. Proper control of drilling operation can provide an opportunity to improve energy efficiency of drilling and to reduce noise and heat generated from bit-rock friction. Drilling tests have been conducted in laboratory settings to confirm this noise-reduction strategy. Preliminary results show that the drilling parameters, penetration and rotational rates can be controlled to achieve in a desirable range in drilling medium hard rock. Based on the theoretical and experimental studies, rational drilling control strategy is developed for noise control while maintaining a safe and productive roof bolting operation. Applying this strategy in underground roof bolting operation, the noise exposure of roof bolter operators will be significantly reduced.

Numerous data in the literature confirm that the chemical composition and consumption of grinding media influence electrochemical properties of flotation suspension as well as effectiveness and selectivity of upgrading processes. During a milling process, attrition of grinding media is observed. Depending on the susceptibility to abrasion, the grinding media influence, to a different extent, the redox potential, pH as well as flotation efficiency. As a result, different upgradeability of sulfide minerals is observed. The paper presents laboratory scale flotation results, obtained for the copper sulfide ore from Polkowice Region of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. in Poland ground in the presence of forged steel, highchrome iron and stainless steel as the grinding media. The investigated flotation feed contained 36 g/t (ppm) of silver and 1.86 % of copper. Several flotation tests were conducted using fixed amount of frother and a mixture of sodium ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the collector at three different doses of 75, 100 and 125 g/t. A comparison of the obtained results confirmed that the application of grinding media with different chemical compositions influenced the electrochemical properties of the suspension and recovery of silver and copper in the final concentrate. The highest values of redox potential were observed for the stainless steel as the grinding medium. Moreover, in the presence of this type of grinding media, regardless of the collector dosage, the best silver upgrading was observed. For the forged and high-chrome iron media, the recovery of silver depended on the collector dosage. It is indicated that higher levels of the redox potential, together with smaller amount of iron released from the grinding medium, improve the flotation of the silver-bearing mineral compounds from the copper sulfide ore.

"In western Canada, many new wells contain a significant fraction of H2S. As well, many older wells become increasingly sour over their operating lifetime. For these reasons, there has been increased demand for linepipe and casing for sour service applications in recent years. This paper will review the metallurgical factors which must be considered in designing steels for such applications. IPSCO’s development of linepipe and casing, and experience in fabricating products to meet test standards specified for sour service applications will be summarized. IntroductionWestern Canada produces the majority of Canada’s domestic crude oil and natural gas. A complex system of pipelines has been built to gather the oil and gas from the fields for transport to refining and/or cleaning operations. The gas carried in these pipelines can be either sweet or sour (i.e. containing no H2S or containing H2S) depending on the nature of the field from which it came. Many new fields contain a significant fraction of H2S and many older fields become more sour as their time in production increases. This uncertainty regarding product condition influences the user’s choice of materials for both casing and pipeline applications.It is well known (Merrick, 1989) that hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) will occur in steel when three conditions exist simultaneously: (1) the presence of H2S gas, (2) moisture, and (3) a susceptible material. Steelmakers can only address the latter of these factors. Development of steels to meet test requirements of sour service has been a major focus of IPSCO’s development work for several years."

Corrosion of GaAs in aqueous electrolytes is a major limitation in implementing GaAs-based photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion systems, In this work, the corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical methods and surface analysis approaches, in both H2SO4 and NH3?H2O solutions, Open-circuit measurements showed that the cleaned GaAs surface was very sensitive to water/air, Impedance measurements for n-GaAs showed that an inductive loop only appeared at a high corrosion rate because a reaction intermediate is the oxidant for a further decomposition step in combination with chemical reaction with water, The results suggest that the same corrosion/decomposition mechanism occurred on n-GaAs in the two solutions, When the surface-hole concentration was low, the hole injection or generation process was the rate-determining step, At large reverse bias on n-GaAs, with high-hole concentration, the corrosion rate was limited by a Faradaic adsorption process, involving an adsorbed intermediate, The different surface compositions after corrosion in the two solutions can be explained by the dissolution of As(0), Further oxidation of As(0) to As(III) in NH3?H2O solution is still slow, as suggested from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis,

With the increased use of mechanized rock excavation, there have been developed internationally a number of methods to assess the abrasivity of rock materials. These methods range from determination of abrasive and hard mineral content using petrographic thin section analysis to weight loss or rate of wear flat development on specified test pieces. The Cerchar abrasivity index (CAI) test has been widely accepted for the assessment of rock abrasiveness and is determined as the abrasion of a steel pin after scratching over the freshly-broken or saw-cut surface of a rock. Two types of testing devices are in use today: (i) the original ‘Cerchar apparatus’, and (ii) the ‘West apparatus’, which was adopted herein. The CAI is calculated from the measured diameter of the resulting wear flat on the steel pin after 10mm scratching. This test has been considered to provide a reliable indication of rock abrasiveness for isotropic rocks. However, a great amount of rocks in natureis anisotropic. Phyllite is an anisotropic and foliated metamorphic rock and various types of phyllite specimens were tested in this research. Although phyllite is a type of rock primarily composed of quartz and the expected CAI value can be high, mechanical cutting of this rock should not be very problematic compared with igneous rocks have same CAI value. As phyllite is a foliated metamorphic rock, most of the specimens split into sheets through the quartz seam by the tip during scratching normal to the axis of quartz seams. Hence, viability assessment of Cerchar abrasivity test and F-Schimazek index values for the anisotropic rocks is investigated in this research.

A typical process adopted at nickel plant is the processing of nickel-copper mattes and converter mattes using the following technology: pressure oxidative leaching (POX), solvent extraction (SX), electrowinning (EW), cobalt recovery, and solutions purification. As a result of multi-stage atmospheric and autoclave process leaching, copper-nickel separation is achieved. Cobalt and nickel are further separated by SX. Copper in the process can be removed as copper cake (Cu-cake), which is a by-product with high content of valuable metals. In the current paper, a method combining atmospheric and pressure leaching of Cu-cake in sulfuric-acid media is discussed. Suggested method allows to obtain high copper extraction (>98%), with leach residue containing precious metals and PGMs. Sulfuric acid media was chosen to make the suggested technology adaptable for the primary POX-SX-EW circuit. The initial Cu-cake was analysed and a range of process parameters (t = 25–190°C; PO2 = 0–7 bar) investigated to achieve the optimal conditions for leaching process at the ambient as well as at increased pressure. As a result, an initial process block diagram for the treatment of Cu-cake with high copper leaching efficiency and low metal losses is provided. INTRODUCTION The conventional technology for nickel sulphide ore processing includes the following main stages: froth flotation, matte smelting and converting. The subsequent processing of nickel converter matte is possible using fundamentally different approaches - hydrometallurgical (Llanos, Queneau & Rickard, 1974; Rademan, Lorenzen & Van Deventer, 1999; Kshumaneva, Kasikov, Neradovskii & Belyaevskii, 2009; Dutrizac & Chen, 2013) and pyrometallurgical (Tsymbulov, Knyazev, Tsemekman & Golov, 2007). Hydrometallurgical approach in comparison with pyro-process has several advantages, such as reduced environmental load, reduced PGM losses, increased copper and nickel extraction. Typically, hydrometallurgical technologies include leaching, solvent extraction as well as nickel and cobalt recovery in metallic form by electrowinning or hydrogen reduction or as valuable metal salts via crystallization process (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson & Davenport, 2011).

A comprehensive model of solution flow through heap leach systems requires a numerical solution with the ability to predict variably saturated-unsaturated flow through porous media domains that contain materials with spatially variable properties. The types of flow associated with stockpile leach processes lead to flow problems, such as infiltration into dry soil, drainage, perched water tables and flow through heterogeneous materials. Computational methods for modelling this class of flow behaviour are conventionally based on the classical Richards' equation. However, the governing equations are highly non-linear, difficult to solve, and require iterative numerical solution methods. The pressure-based form of the Richards' equation suffers from poor mass balance, while the mixed form can possess convergence difficulties. An adaptive transformed mixed algorithm is described, which reduces the non-linearity of the problem, optimizes the time step size, and provides a fast, numerically robust scheme that significantly reduces computation (or CPU) time. This method is shown to give fast, accurate solutions on a number of complex flow problems. The utility of this algorithm is illustrated through its implementation within the PHYSICA computational modelling software, which incidentally, provides a framework for a comprehensive heap leach model.

"The Voisey’s Bay mill processes a high-grade pentlandite and chalcopyrite ore in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. From 1994 to 1997, circuit development focused on making a 14% nickel concentrate. When flowsheet development resumed in 2001, the target grade was raised to 20% ni. initially triethylene tetramine and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in a lime circuit, but by recycling process water and the contained thiosalts, the required nickel grade was made without depressants. construction of the mill was fast-tracked, with start-up in september 2005. ramp-up was faster than other recent nickel installations, with tonnage being limited by concentrate dewatering due to higher-thanexpected ore grades.RÉSUMÉ l’usine de traitement de Voisey’s Bay traite un minerai à teneur élevée en pentlandite et chalcopyrite dans une matrice formée surtout de pyrrhotite/troïlite. "Résumé - Les seules productions de columbo-tantalite en Côte d'Ivoire sont effectuées dans les éluvions, colluvions et alluvions d'Issia, au Centre-Ouest de la Côte d'Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n'a été accordée à l'étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l'évolution de ces granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent: le granite orienté à deux micas (type Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (type Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (type Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type-S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite de type Issia fut le dernier à se former.Les pegmatites liées au granite de type Issia ont été classées en quatre types : A- pegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et D- pegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV- zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartztourmaline. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d'altération métasomatique externe.La minéralisation de Ta, Nb, et Be est liée à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, la minéralisation de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n'importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite de type Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite de type Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite de type Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma. Les éléments rares sont restés dans le liquide résiduel jusqu'à ce que les conditions favorables à leur précipitation soient atteintes.L'établissement de ce lien génétique ouvre des voies pour des nouvelles stratégies d'exploration."

Introduction An apparatus that will measure the surface area of a few of the simple minerals with a high degree of accuracy has been described by J. W. Bell (1). His apparatus consisted essentially of a photometric device that would measure the turbidity of fine particle suspensions. Turbidity, in this case, was considered as a function of surface area. Bell's method of surface area determination seemed to offer possibilities of extension and improvement to the point where it might approach a general method of particle size measurement. Theoretical and Practical Considerations of the Photometric Method In order to illustrate how turbidity may be considered as a function of average particle size, and to indicate the type of results expected from a photometric method of particle size measurement involving turbidity, the following theory may be hypothecated. If a number of particles, considered as spheres of uniform diameter, are placed at random in the path of a beam of light, the following expression, which will give the change in light intensity as a function of the diameter of the particles, the specific gravity of the material, and the weight involved, can be formulated from the Beer-Lambert Law:

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.
