The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

In the late 1960's concerns about the natural environment reached high levels within North America and provided activists with suitable platforms for exerting influence over the general public and politicians. In response a host of regulatory mechanisms were developed, statutes, voluntary measures, land grants, codes of practices etc. Emerging environmental awareness from the era provided impetus for rapid technological change that encompassed all industries, especially the base metal business. The resulting clean up impacted all aspects of copper production, dealing with issues such as waste disposal, water and air quality with specific impact on emissions of sulfur dioxide and particulate. This paper provides a perspective of these changes reviewing the macro-economic impact of environmental movement in mining with its specific implications to the copper smelting industry. The fundamental challenges that were faced by the old, but capital-intensive North American plants and the approaches taken to deal with the changing times are reviewed with special emphasis on the conceptual approach to smelter S02 abatement and different paths taken in the USA and Canada. The role of economics, sustainable R&D and presence of technical infrastructure that facilitated the change process is elucidated, and speculations are made about the future state of pyrometallurgy and the natural environment. "The TankCell® 300 forced air flotation cell designed and built by Outotec, with active volume of over 300 m3, was installed at Codelco’s Chuquicamata concentrator in September 2008. After that, a program was conducted, where the new cell was tested against the plant’s existing flotation cells of type TankCell® 160, with an active volume of over 160 cubic meters.Testing program was exhaustive and detailed. Grade-recovery curves for each setup were reported, along with recoveries by particle size. Secondly, operational characteristics like air feed and froth height setpoints, and power consumption are compared side-by-side. As the third topic, gas dispersion characterization included velocity mapping, holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux operating range. The fourth area of interest was the retention time distribution (RTD) of the 300 and 160 m3 cells in comparison. A detailed campaign using radioactive tracer tests was conducted to clarify this.All of the investigations mentioned above are reported in separate papers for more detail. The aim of this paper is to collect the key findings, and present them in real terms, always referring to operability and metallurgy of the cells. It is destined for people designing new plants and to those improving and expanding existing ones. The most frequently heard question is: will the new large cells operate at same efficiency as the smaller ones. In short, the answer is: NO. They operate at improved efficiency!INTRODUCTIONIn the last two decades of minerals processing, there have been three dominant trends of development in the flotation technology: equipment scale-up, cell characterization and circuit modeling. Equipment scale-up has been rapid in the past two decades. In the year 1990, the largest flotation cell in use was 50 cubic meters of size. This year, 300 cubic meters is the largest installed cell. Characterization of flotation equipment and circuits is a very popular subject nowadays and has helped many operations to improve their recoveries through better control strategies, for example by using optimized air feed and level control profiles (Gorain, 2005), (Doucet, Gomez, Finch, 2006), or through better maintenance (Coleman, Urtubia, Alexander, 2006). Characterization work is closely linked to circuit modeling. The aim is to produce sufficient amount of data to allow reliable model building. These models are then used to design new circuits and to improve existing ones. So in summary, these three lines of development have slightly different aims – from capital and operational cost to performance optimization. Ultimately, they converge in the same end result – maximizing the profitability of the operation. Following chapters will summarize the extensive test work and scientific studies at Codelco Chuquicamata. The aim was to compare a TankCell® 300 cell, with nominal volume of 300 m3, against two TankCell® 160 machines, with 160 m3 volume in each. The work should yield answers to questions: does the larger cell produce similar results – is the scale-up successful?"

This document presents estimates of future "total cash cost per ounce" and "minesite cost per tonne" that are not recognized measures under United States generally accepted accounting principles ("US GAAP"). This data may not be comparable to data presented by other gold producers. These future estimates are based upon the total cash costs per ounce and minesite costs per tonne that the Company expects to incur to mine gold at the applicable projects and do not include production costs attributable to accretion expense and other asset retirement costs, which will vary over time as each project is developed and mined. It is therefore not practicable to reconcile these forward-looking non-GAAP financial measures to the most comparable GAAP measure. A reconciliation of the Company's total cash cost per ounce and minesite cost per tonne to the most comparable financial measures calculated and presented in accordance with US GAAP for the Company's historical results of operations is set forth in the notes to the financial statements included in the Company's Annual Information Form and Annual Report on Form 20-F, for the year ended December 31, 2009, as well as the Company's other filings with the Canadian Securities Administrators and the SEC.

Rare Element Resources Inc., a U.S. based company, has developed a three-stage process for producing a +98% mixed REO powder from hard rock feedstock (-48 mesh, 2.9-4.8% REO) consisting of bastnaesite and ancylite minerals. Firstly, the whole ore is digested in chloride media at low temperature in counter-current flow mode. Secondly, the rare earths (REEs) are selectively precipitated as oxalates directly from an impure pregnant leach solution (PLS). Finally, significant amounts of free acid and water are recovered from the REE-depleted filtrate and subsequently recycled within the process. Excess heat from the oxalate calcination process is captured and reused in the plant. Due to the low leach temperature (45 ºC) and moderate acid dosage (240-297 kg/t, HCl), rare earth oxides (REOs) are preferentially leached out of fine solids leaving most of the base metals (Ba, Fe, and Al ) in the residue. Selective recovery of REEs from the PLS is achieved by mixing dilute oxalic acid (33% H2C2O4) and PLS at elevated temperature (85-95 ºC). The REEs plus thorium are precipitated as oxalates (REE2 (C2O4).xH2O) while the base metals are left behind in the barren filtrate. Multiple batch and pilot test results have confirmed that 50-80% of the oxalic acid can be recovered from the REE-depleted PLS through low-temperature crystallization (10-15 ºC). Typical leach efficiencies of critical rare earths at 45 ºC range from 85-99% (average 93%) while oxalate precipitation at high temperature increases the crystal size of RE oxalates (>450 microns, d80) thereby improving filtration. The economic benefits of this process include elimination of flotation and magnetic separation Capex and driving hydrometallurgical Opex down to $6- 7/kg, REO produced. As part of a comprehensive risk mitigation strategy, Rare Element Resources Inc has operated multiple pilot plants at SGS in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada to optimize counter-current leaching (CCL), REE oxalate precipitation (OXP), and thorium removal circuits. This paper presents pilot testing data from CCL and REE OXP circuits.

This paper presents a BIM-based Risk Identification Expert System (B-RIES) for metro construction, composed of three main built-in subsystems: BIM extraction, knowledge base management, and risk identification subsystems. The engineering parameter information related to risk factors is extracted from the BIM of a specific project where the IFC standard plays a bridge role between the BIM data and metro construction safety risks. An integrated knowledge base, consisting of fact base, rule base and case base, is established to systematize the fragmented explicit and tacit knowledge. A hybrid inference approach, with case-based reasoning and rule-based reasoning included, is developed to improve the flexibility and comprehensiveness of the system reasoning capacity. During the safety risk identification process, B-RIES is able to improve the inefficiencies in engineering information extraction, reduce the dependence on domain experts, and facilitate knowledge sharing and communication among dispersed clients and domain experts. A typical safety hazard identification in the Mingdu station, located in the Wuhan Metro Line Two, is presented in a case study. The results demonstrate the feasibility of B-RIES, and its application potential. B-RIES can be used as a decision support tool to provide guidelines for safety management in metro construction, and thus increase the likelihood of a successful project in a complex environment.

"Abstract - Time-domain electromagnetic systems are most sensitive to highly conductive targets during the transmitter on-time. Data collected during the on-time is highly influenced by the geometric relationship between the transmitter and the receiver. Unless corrections can be applied for these geometric variations, the ability to correctly detect and identify highly conductive targets can not be fully realized. Variables affecting the relative position between the transmitter and receiver include changes in the position of the receiver with respect to the transmitter, variations in transmitter attitude, and transmitter loop deformation. The level of accuracy in the determination of the relative geometry required to permit complete removal of the effects due to geometric variations is different for each of the variables and is dependent on the depth of the target. The most influential geometric variation involves changes in the relative position of the receiver with respect to the transmitter along the direction of flight; this variable, therefore, requires the highest degree of accuracy. The accuracy required for receiver motions along the vertical direction is roughly one order of magnitude less, and in the lateral direction, several orders of magnitude less. The objective of this paper is to relate the sensitivity of the response to transmitter-receiver geometry to the ability of an airborne, time-domain electromagnetic system to resolve a highly conductive vertical target. This is achieved by a detailed analysis of the effect of the individual x, y, and z distances between the transmitter and the receiver, the transmitter attitude (roll, pitch, and yaw), and transmitter deformation.Sommaire - Les systèmes électromagnétiques en domaine temporel sont particulièrement sensibles aux cibles à forte conductivité durant le temps d’excitation. THE gold mining industry in Canada is today the most important stabilizing influence in the country. This factor was brought out particularly during the 'depression' years, when steady employment was given to men in that industry and the monies spent in supplies and power in turn benefited the country to a great extent. At the same time, a commodity was produced which was saleable in any market of the world, thus maintaining Canada's credit in foreign markets and keeping her trade balances equalized. We have a vast area known as the Precambrian Shield. The agricultural possibilities of this area are practically negligible and it will depend entirely upon the mineral and forest resources to make this district an economic factor in the life of Canada. To date, from the mineral point of view, we have been highly successful. There are, however, still vast areas to be explored. It is tedious and laborious work, entailing great individual hard-ships and the expenditure of much energy and money. During my thirty years' experience in the search for, and operating of, gold mines, I have come to the conclusion that although individuals may give all their time, energy, and money, Governmental assistance is absolutely necessary in the development of hydro-electric power sites and roads. The Governments, to date, have given splendid co-operation along these lines, but in order that this great industry may go ahead they should continue their good work and, if possible, give greater relief from taxation to mines situated at a considerable distance from the railway.

It is the object of this paper to discuss various options for improving the hematite process in terms of increased throughput hence lower capital cost and production of saleable quality hematite. With reference to increasing the throughput of the process, it has now been determined via the analysis of Akita Zinc Co's continuous industrial autoclave performance data that the process kinetics is limited by the rate of the hydrolytic precipitation reaction. By correlating the hydrolytic precipitation rate to supersaturation ratio, it is shown that accelerated kinetics can be achieved via the following measures: (1) in-situ neutralization with addition of zinc calcine; (2) elevation of temperature; and (3) dilution of feed; of which, the first one was retained for further evaluation. According to presented estimates, addition of calcine, amounting to only 2.6% of the total zinc calcine processed, can allow for shortening the retention time by at least 50%. Such drastic shortening of retention time may be either used to increase the throughput of a given autoclave circuit or alternatively to release autoclave capacity for clean hematite production. Hydrothermal treatment of the crude hematite product proved effective in producing clean hematite as according to laboratory tests, hence allowing the sulphur content of hematite to be reduced from around 4% to less than 1%. A conceptual flowsheet incorporating in-situ neutralization for accelerated kinetics with hydrothermal upgrading of crude hematite without sacrificing production capacity and with minimum upset of the plant's water balance is described.

"The objective of this project is to investigate methods to lower the sulphate concentrations in the mill effluent. Currently, the concentration of sulphate in mill effluent is approximately 2 g/L. The high concentration of sulphate ion in the effluent has the potential to become a regulatory issue. The target sulphate concentration in mill effluent for this work was less than 500 mg/L. The pilot studies, using sulphate precipitation, were carried out at the mill. The results of the sulphate precipitation pilot study, using calcium hydroxide and sodium aluminate, indicated that:• The sulphate concentrations in effluent could be reduced to less than 500 mg/L.• The concentrations of most other elements of concern, such as selenium, arsenic, cobalt, nickel and vanadium, were also reduced.INTRODUCTIONHistorically, the concentration of sulphate, SO4 2-, in water has not generally been subject to regulation. However, with the increasing global consumption of water, stricter regulations on sulphate quantity may be imposed. Sulphate is a concern in process waters as it forms scale on process equipment and leads to operational problems. High sulphate concentrations may result in adverse health effects. The taste theshhold for the most sulphate salts in drinking water ranges from 250 to 500 mg/L.A literature search and review to identify methods to reduce sulphate concentration in the mill effluent was carried out. A number of methods were selected and tested in the lab. The experimental results indicated that the precipitation methods, using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compounds, barium compounds, as well as the ion exchange and the membrane methods, were effective for the removal of sulphate to below the required limits. Some other elements, such as vanadium, nickel, cobalt, selenium and molybdenum, were also removed.The process, using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compound for sulphate precipitation, similar to the Cost Effective Sulphate Removal (CESR), also known as “Walhalla” process, described in the Montana Tech report (“Demonstration Of Sulfate Removal” 1999), was selected for further consideration [1]. In the CESR process, the water is treated with lime for precipitation of gypsum, followed by the reaction with a proprietary aluminum compound for removal of a residual sulphate. The final pH adjustment is carried out using carbon dioxide. Results of a preliminary cost estimate indicated that the removal of sulphate using calcium hydroxide and aluminum compound was the preferred method of treatment, considering its low cost, availability of chemicals and minimal changes to the existing plant circuit."

The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Determining mineralogical characteristics of samples throughout the iron ore concentration process – from drill core samples up to the concentrate – is critical to process improvement and remediation. However, assessment of mineral proportions, liberation, and texture, although essential, can be time-consuming and costly. Thus, a mineralogical study is often not performed or only restricted to a limited number of samples. New iron ore deposits or new ore zones in active mines will bring new challenges as they are known to be problematic due to their lower grades, complex textures and presence of mineral impurities. In those cases, applied process mineralogy will be necessary to understand and to diagnose potential processing issues. To take full advantage of mineralogical information along the iron ore concentration process, new tools are being developed to provide mineralogical data based on texture, composition and liberation. In an early stage at the mine, the automated identification of drill core textures could provide essential information for the prediction of ore concentrability and grindability. In a later stage, the automated modal tool, combining the knowledge of the iron ore mineralogy of a specific deposit and the results of chemical analyses, can quantify the mineral proportions of the ore; results show good agreement between mineral estimation via chemical analysis and modal analysis using a Mineral Liberation Analyser. A bulk mineralogical analyser allowing semi-quantitative evaluation of the liberation of iron oxides is being validated. The results from the bulk mineralogical analyser will eventually be linked with the mineral proportions issued by the automated modal tool to provide complete mineralogical characteristics of iron ore samples. Ultimately, these mineralogical tools could provide valuable and timely insight for predicting concentrators’ performances or troubleshooting gravity separation processes.

Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. Based on McKinsey?s review* and its own discussions with key stakeholders across the industry, the Steering Committee strongly believes the case for marketing is compelling and sufficiently proven to persuade the industry to undertake a major initiative over the next few years. "In this study, H2SO4 and HCl leaching behaviour of an ore sample containing 1.87% of Ni, obtained from the Karaçam (Eskisehir-Turkey) lateritic deposit that started operation recently was investigated. Acid concentration, temperature and reaction time were investigated as variables by comparative leaching tests and the optimum leaching conditions were selected on teh basis of Ni, Fe, Co and Mg behaviour. For H2SO4 leaching, optimum leach parameters were 95°C, a 12 normal H2SO4 concentration and 90 minutes of reaction time, and under these conditions Ni and Fe dissolutions were 97.6% and 95.4% respectively. On the other hand, 70°C, an 8 normal HCl concentration and a reaction time of 90 minutes were found to be the optimum parameters for HCl leaching, and Ni and Fe dissolutions found were 97.1% and 97.8%, respectively.INTRODUCTION Today, nickel and various nickel compounds are obtained from sulphide and lateritic nickel ores (Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002). Even though about 72% of the world's nickel reserves constitute lateritic ores, only about 42% of nickel is produced from these ores. The decrease in production from sulphide deposits, on the other hand, and increases in the use of nickel in the iron and steel, and battery production sectors, and especially the production of nickel cast irons in recent years, have accelerated the importance of making use of lateritic deposits (Luo et. al., 2010; Chang et. al., 2010). In the beneficiation of sulphide nickel ores, mostly pyrometallurgical methods are used. On the other hand, about 39% of lateritic ores are beneficiated by pyrometallurgical, and 61% are beneficiated by hydrometallurgical methods (USGS, 2009). In laterite beneficiation, the ore properties are of significance; that is to say, limonitic ores are eneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or via the Caron process, nontronitic ores are beneficiated by high pressure acid leaching or heat treatment (smelting), and ores containing serpentine by pyrometallurgical methods (Berezowsky, 2004; McDonald & Whittington, 2008a; Dreisinger et. al., 2015)."

The technology consists of sulfuric acid atmospheric leaching of the ores or residues followed by neutralization and recovery of nickel and cobalt. The acid addition is carefully controlled to maximize nickel and cobalt extraction while minimizing overall consumption of acid by various gangue reactions. The final recovery processes can be tailored for maximum economic benefit. The use of resin-in-pulp processing is advocated as the most cost effective method for initial recovery of nickel and cobalt from lower grade materials. INTRODUCTIONCommercial processes for laterite ore treatment vary according to laterite type and local conditions. The two general categories of laterite ore are saprolites and limonites.Saprolites are generally treated by pyrometallurgical processes for reduction of nickel to matte or ferro nickel alloys. The high cost of drying, chemical reduction and electric furnace smelting requires that the saprolite grade for economic processing is of the order of 1.8% nickel or higher. There are of course large amounts of saprolite that fall below this “cut-off” grade that are not currently economic.Limonites can be treated by the Caron Process which involves drying of the ore, a reduction roast of the whole ore to reduce nickel and cobalt (and some iron) to the metallic state followed by ammonium – ammonium carbonate solution to leach nickel and cobalt. Nickel and cobalt recovery are low (70-85% for Ni and 20-50% for Co). The Caron plant tailings therefore contain high levels of unrecovered nickel and cobalt. Relatively few plants have used the Caron Process and new installations are not anticipated due to the high energy cost of drying and reduction roasting. Nevertheless, plants in Brazil (Niquelandia), Australia (Yabulu) and Cuba continue to operate.The high pressure acid leach (HPAL) process was pioneered at Moa Bay in Cuba in the 1960’s in the treatment of limonites. In the 1990’s the HPAL process was touted to revolutionize the nickel industry with low capital and operating costs for new installations. Murrin Murrin, Cawse and Bulong in Australia were started and in each case the technical difficulties of operating at extreme temperature and pressure conditions and the challenges in “ramping up” a complex hydrometallurgical facility conspired to cause these plants to fail economically. At present, Cawse and Bulong are closed and Murrin Murrin continues to operate after undergoing a financial restructuring."

"At the moment climatic conditions are a primary problem of the exploitation of copper ore. The efficiency of preventive actions in order to improve climatic conditions is connected with the knowledge of changing air in underground excavations. This article demonstrates the analysis of types of ventilation dams which are used in sealing abandoned areas on the maintenance of climatic working conditions in excavations has been conducted at the exploitation in Polish copper ore mines. INTRODUCTION The basis for mining activity performed by KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. is mining copper ores from the deposit lying at depths between 600 and 1,200 m below ground level. Activity has continued since 1963. The copper ore deposit is mined in ‘Lubin’, ‘Rudna’ and ‘Polkowice-Sieroszowice’ mines, where difficult climatic conditions occur. The major factor moulding the climatic conditions in headings is the original temperature of rocks, being the result of geological conditions of the lying of the deposit and the existing geothermal degree. In the faces of present opening-out and preparatory headings, driven from mining areas of ‘Rudna’ and ‘Polkowice-Sieroszowice’ mines in order to open out deeper parts of the deposit, the original temperature of rocks reaches 45°C. Excluding the original temperature of rocks, the following are additional factors affecting the deterioration in the climatic conditions: • thermal properties of deposit rocks, • employed room-and-pillar mining systems, which are characterised by a large surface of exposure of rocks, • using self-propelled mining machines with diesel drive, • a high concentration of mining works, • setting up high-power electrical equipment in headings, • complex structures of mine ventilation networks, • a limited number of ventilating shafts, • constantly longer air-transport routes, • a significant accumulation of water increasing the humidity of supplied air. According to the valid Polish provisions (§21, 2013), the primary criterion of assessment of a climatic hazard is the occurrence at a workstation in an underground mining heading of an equivalent climate temperature of more than 26°C, which temperature is determined according to the following dependence:"

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are a group of painful disorders that affect muscles, tendons, nerves, joints, cartilage, and ligaments. They are a serious problem among the workforce in the United States. In the construction industry, high physically demanding tasks expose construction workers to a number of well recognized MSDs risk factors such as repetitive motion, high force exertion, and awkward body posture. Finding ways to effectively identify and evaluate risks of MSDs can significantly alleviate this problem. To this end, this paper reviews state of practice and research in the assessment of risks of MSDs among construction workers, in which a number of biomechanical models have been developed to evaluate joint and tissue loading with the aid of state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies. Findings from the review reveal that despite the advances in tracking human motion and muscle activities, current remote sensing approaches still involve sophisticated instrumentation and expensive experiment setup. These factors greatly limited the applicability of such approaches in real construction settings. How can we detect and evaluate the construction worker?s MSDs risk in real work environments? In this paper, strategies by utilizing video surveillance systems are presented, to set the stage for addressing the above question and discussing future research in real-time, marker-less, and costeffective MSDs risk assessment.

High purity alloys of zinc with 25 per cent to 50 per cent aluminum, have been prepared. Mechanical properties of the as-cast and heat-treated alloys have been related to constitution, determined by x-ray diffraction and microscopic methods. Investigations include the effects of aging and of small nickel additions on the properties of the alloys.
