A new two-metre column self-heating test procedure has been developed at the University of Queensland, which clearly shows the hot spot development phases that take place in bulk coal self-heating. The column results provide a more reliable indication of the self-heating propensity of coal than small-scale index tests. At the same time, off-gas evolution patterns associated with hot spot development are obtained, including the recognition of hydrogen evolution from oxidation at temperatures less than 80¦C. Subtle differences in off-gas evolution from self-heating between gassy and gas-drained coal are also apparent. This new approach to coal self-heating assessment offers an opportunity to further the understanding of the complexities of spontaneous combustion and will enable more accurate risk assessment for the coal industry.

The Australian mining industry can expect to be working internationally competitive high quality coal mines during the twenty-first century. Cost efficient mining methods such as high productivity longwall units with heavy reliance on remote control will be standard and worked by well paid and intensively trained operators. Major changes in mine ventilation engineering can be expected in the use of computers and mine telemetry, the understanding of the mine environment and the frequency of mine disasters, the utilization of mine air contaminants for profitable purposes and the provision of a pleasant and comfortable work environment. New approaches to mine ventilation such as air recirculation will have been considered. There will be an increased need for highly trained ventilation engineers. With the present pace of technological change, quite revolutionary new approaches to mining and ventilation can be expected by the end of the twenty-first century.

Control of silicon in produced through the submerged-arc furnace can result in reduced power and coke consumption in addition to improving the quality of the hot metal. A thermo-chemical analysis of the production of ferro-chromium was carried out to devise strategies to control the recovery of silicon during the manufacture of ferro-chromium. The presence of three thermochemical zones in the furnace with respect to the reduction of silica was recognised from this analysis. Any strategy for the control of silicon recovery has to take cognizance of these thermochemical zones. The effect of various strategies on the silicon level in the hot metal have been evaluated. Possible strategies, such as the reduction of coke level in the charge; the replacement of quartz; pre-reduction of the ore and the control of the temperature profile are discussed in this paper.

The main regularities of the tectonic history of the Circumpacific belt's Asian segment are discussed. The established longitudinal metallogenic zoning is characterized by essential copper specialization being replaced in the.continentward direction by tin-tungsten and then by copper-gold-molybdenum and-tin-lead- zinc ones. The zones indicated show specific magmatism and ore forming fluid composition. The eastern margin of Eurasia experienced specific tectonic history and exhibits a wide variety of mineral deposits. It is composed of the Siberian and Sino-Korean cratons and of the largest mobile elements of tectonosphere like the Hyperborean, Urals-Mongolian, Mediterranean and Circumpacific belts. The Earth's Atlantic segment mobile features show deep penetration of their geosyncline-fold systems into the eastern margin of Asia. A good example is the Urals-Mongolian belt, its Intra-Asian branch being located within the continental margin. The Intra-Asian structural features have WE and NE trending, while folding process moved southward : Karelides and Baikalides are found in the Transbaikalia and the Soviet Far East (Stanovoy, Bodaibo-Patom, Baikal- Vitim, Selenga-Yablonovy fold regions)

Flash flotation is a process that is included in many new mineral processing plants as part of the grinding circuit. Some of the valuable minerals can often be liberated at coarse sizes and will remain in the recirculating loads of the mill until they are reground small enough to report to the cyclone overflow. In addition, minerals of high density report to the cyclone underflow despite being fine in size. This can lead to overgrinding and makes the recovery of valuable fines by flotation difficult. Flash flotation is used to remove the readily floated coarse particles as early as possible and can therefore prevent overgrinding. It thus has the added potential to improve materials handling of the concentrates in such processes as filtration. The merits of including flash flotation within an integrated comminution-conventional flotation circuit is not easy to determine experimentally. Simple batch flotation tests are unable to provide any measure of the possible or probable improvements that are likely to occur from this circuit configuration. As a consequence expensive pilot plant programs are resorted to, to provide the information that will justify the inclusion of flash flotation into a comminution-flotation circuit. Those who have been involved in such pilot plant programs will know of the difficulty in stabilising the circuit as well as selecting the appropriate operating parameters (eg amount of concentrate to be removed in both the flash flotation and conventional flotation circuits). The interactive nature of this circuit (grinding, classification and flotation) is the root cause of these difficulties. Computer simulation, based on information derived from laboratory batch test work or plant and laboratory data, offers an alternative means by which an initial assessment of the merits of a flash flotation circuit can be determined. It can also provide the basis and focus for pilot plant testwork. Recently MacKinnon, Yan and Dunne (2003) developed a model that allows the performance of a flash flotation to be obtained within a closed circuit grinding operation. This paper provides details of an extension of this model to incorporate the interaction of flash flotation on the downstream conventional flotation circuit and allows æwhat ifÆ scenarios to be explored. Details of the laboratory batch test work methodology and the pertinent data derived from these tests that are used in the models and simulation are provided.

The way they do This has an impact on the risk to a project. This is discussed and examples are taken from the Northern Territory uranium industry. A major issue presently faced by companies producing and processing iron ore is the need to maximise throughput while minimising capital expenditure. While present high demand means this is of prime importance, the perennial issues of maintenance, operating costs, reliability, quality and environmental sustainability are also critical to profi tability. Attempts to address these issues generally require modifi cations to existing equipment, or trials of new equipment when designing plant for new projects.The risk involved can be substantially minimised by testing equipment improvements using advanced computational models prior to implementation. Examples of application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling to sampling, cyclones, conveyor transfers, classifiers, dust control, banana screens, comminution and smelt-reduction will be given to illustrate the benefi ts of such an approach. *This is an abstract only. The Pebble deposit, located in south-west Alaska, is one of the largest Copper- Gold-Molybdenum (Cu-Au-Mo) porphyry systems in the world, with a current resource of >8 billion tonnes which contain 73.7 billion pounds of copper, 87.1 million ounces of gold and 4.16 billion pounds of molybdenum. The Pebble deposit formed at ~90 Ma, during emplacement of subduction-related hornblende granodiorite porphyry intrusions emplaced into Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary, volcanic and subvolcanic intrusive rocks of the Kahiltna Terrane. The Pebble West and Pebble East Zones represent two thermal and fluid centres in a single large magmatic-hydrothermal system. The West Zone extends from surface to about 500 m depth, has thin zones of oxide and supergene mineralisation overlying hypogene chalcopyrite mineralisation, and is amenable to open pit extraction. The East Zone extends to at least 1700 m depth, is higher grade, occurs beneath an eastward-thickening cover of younger sedimentary and volcanic rocks, lacks oxide and supergene mineralisation, and is being evaluated for underground block-cave mining. Most Cu-Au-Mo was introduced with early K-silicate alteration and related quartz-sulfide veins. In the East Zone, a structurally-controlled overprint by advanced argillic alteration significantly increased Au and, to a lesser extent, Cu grades. Exploration potential at Pebble and its surrounding district remains high. Several other porphyry, skarn and epithermal deposits have been discovered in the district, but only limited exploration has been conducted. The eastern, higher grade part of the Pebble deposit remains open in several directions, with significant potential for resource expansion by ongoing, aggressive drill exploration. Over the past five years, dedicated tertiary mining engineering programs have become financially unsustainable in Australia on the basis of undergraduate enrolments alone. The situation is worse in other minerals related disciplines and extends to the technical minerals education sector. This paper reviews the causes for the current situation. Indicators are presented which suggest that enrolment trends can no longer be attributed only to business cycles in the minerals industry but are also reflective of a fundamental shift in student interest in the sciences and resources based engineering disciplines. Reactive responses to changing trends are diluting and compromising the quality of mining engineering education. It is unlikely that the trends can be reversed or resisted. Tertiary minerals educators need to position themselves so that they can be responsive to on-going change. Two proposals are offered which aim to anchor mining engineering in a long-term sustainable manner. The proposals have a common educational component which is concerned with restructuring how mining engineering programs are presented and providing more flexible access to such programs. However, the two proposals have significantly different commercial components. The commercial component of first proposal is concerned with working within the traditional education framework of universities to endow a critical number of core staff positions. It effectively equates to fund raising. The second proposal is concerned with developing a stand-alone commercial operation around the education and research advantages of the global and multi-disciplinary university system. As a shareholder in this business, a university department would earn dividends that it could then use to support its education initiatives. This proposal provides a performance-based mechanism for supporting university minerals programs and has the potential to be cost-neutral. Both proposals are suited to resource sharing with a select number of international mining schools and to the incorporation of the other tertiary minerals disciplines under threat.

Two continuous computer controlled, remote air analysis (RAA) systems operate at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) to give early warning in case of an underground fire at ZC or New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mines. Air drawn from underground sampling points via a tube bundle system is analysed for carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. An alarm is sounded if the concentrations of these gases exceed bench mark figures.

The use of electrostatic fields to effect phase dispersion and agitation in solvent extraction (SX) has demonstrated many advantages over conventional mechanical methods and is therefore a very real alternative. Despite this, an industrial application of the technique is yet to be developed. Here, the several variations of the technique that have been proposed are reviewed, the state-of-the-art assessed and key limitations to a commercial application outlined.

The first thing to be aware of is that the warming effect of carbon dioxide is strongly logarithmic. Of the 3¦ that carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect, the first 20 ppm has a greater effect than the following 400 ppm. By the time we get to the current level of 384 ppm, each 100 ppm increment will produce only about 0.1¦ of warming. With atmospheric carbon dioxide rising at about 2 ppm per annum, temperature will rise at 0.1¦ every 50 years for the next couple of hundred years before the effect becomes minuscule. The warming of the 20th century, as the Earth came out of the Little Ice Age, was a consequence of short, high-amplitude solar cycles. A number of solar physicists have predicted that the next solar cycle, Solar Cycle 24, will be quite weak. Based on the correlation between solar activity and the EarthÆs climate, a temperature decline of 2¦C is predicted for the mid-latitude regions over the coming decade, equating to the experience of the Dalton Minimum. Anthropogenic warming due to carbon dioxide will not ameliorate this temperature decline. Increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is wholly beneficial due to itÆs fertilisation effect. Efforts to inhibit Australian carbon dioxide emissions are exactly wrong in science.

Mackenzie (1968, p. 167) inferred that amphibolitelayers grade into and may be correlated with footwall Potosi gneiss where it is thin under the thickest development of the "lead lode" in the New Broken Hill Consolidated mine, Broken Hill. This gradation from amphibolite to Potosi gneiss is tacitly assumed in many of the constructed crosssections of the southern end of the orebody, where amphibolite and Potosi gneiss, defined in hand specimen, are correlated in adjacent drill holes. Stereological transformation relies on knowledge of the textural characteristic that governs the relationship between the one-, two- and three-dimensional liberation spectrum. Transformation functions can be built from fractionation of real mineralogical particles. Alternatively, transformation functions can be built from simulated textures, geometrical textures or artificial textures. These transformation functions can be useful when the texture of an ore has not yet been characterised for the preliminary assessment of liberation. Recently, Lin et al (1995) developed a methodology for generating such an artificial texture. The artificial texture can be used to produce broken particles of known volumetric composition. Data from image analysis on several artificially generated samples is readily available, and can be used to build the associated stereological transformation function. In this work, the methodology for calculating the transformation function from LinÆs artificial texture is presented. The new texture is implemented for stereological transformation applications.

Metal smelting is seeing a continual increase in intensity and throughput in recent years. This is done with increasing demand for cost/capital efficiency, higher recovery, and managed environmental impact, among other things. With the development of more intense smelting processes, the issues of refractory wear, mixing and separation of reacting phases and the nature of the reactions between them become more prominent. Understanding of interfacial phenomena is in growing need, in addition to knowledge of the bulk properties of equilibrium and transportation. The GKW CRC has a suite of projects aimed at developing various techniques and expertise to provide information of interfaces in metallurgical systems. This article illustrates some recent development in this area, particularly in studies of melt/refractory contacts, the determination of surface and interfacial tension of metal/slag/matte melts, modelling slag-metal mixing and studies of kinetics of the smelting reactions.

There is growing acknowledgement that successful organisations, including mining companies, achieve their competitive advantage by better managing their employees, customers and other stakeholders. The fact that I have been asked to address this conference is perhaps evidence of the recognition of the importance of ensuring the improved management capabilities of the personnel within Australian mining companies. As many of you will be aware, prior to my appointment to the role of President of Minera Alumbrera Limited (MAA), the operator of the Bajo de la Alumbrera project, my career had been more generally focussed on industrial relations and human resources management. My appointment was met by surprise in some quarters, as it is unusual for a person without the technical background of a mining discipline to manage a world-class mining operation. However, it was recognised early in the life of the Alumbrera project that the operation did not lack technical expertise or a committed workforce; rather what was required was innovative management of the project and its operational resources, particularly given that we were operating with totally ægreenÆ workforce in a country without a large-scale mining culture. It is my experience that a particular shortcoming of mining companies is that they have tended to ægrowÆ managers based on their technical expertise rather than people management skills. Historically, many companies have assumed, or at least hoped, that their better technical people would develop the requisite skills to take on the challenges of management. Such philosophy has not always met with success. Whilst the topic for my presentation was originally published as People in the Mining Industry, within the context of the overall theme for this plenary session, People: Education for the Future, it is a subject with an extraordinary breadth of possibilities for discussion. Therefore, I have chosen to redefine my presentation to People Management Issues in Offshore Mining Projects,an issue which I consider to be an important area within the overall topic and one which has particular currency given the increased tendency by Australian miners towards offshore exploration. It is also relevant from the perspective of continued rationalisation of our industry, the recognition that there will be more large-scale, global corporate mining entities and that significantly more mining professionals will become æcitizens of the worldÆ. We therefore need to prepare our future leaders for these challenges. The topic also allows me to highlight the importance of an holistic management approach as the establishment of a new project in a foreign environment puts into stark relief the need for the application of the full range of competencies, rather than the narrow ætechnicalÆ approach to doing business. I hasten to add, however, that the mining industry is not alone in this regard and I was interested to read an article in the Weekend Australian of 22/23 January 2000, which reported on the first key speech of former Westpac CEO, Bob Joss, as Dean of the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He said: à We know that when our students go out into the world, if they have to struggle, it will not be because theyÆre not smart enough, or they donÆt have enough good ideas. It will be because they struggle over managing themselves and their relationships to other people. The article then went on to say that Bob Joss foreshadowed an initiative to build alliances between the Business School and other Humanities departments within Stanford University to draw on their learning. Other business schools have also recognised this need, albeit somewhat late in the day, as have the most enlightened of modern corporations; in summary, successful businesses have recognised that in an age where competitive advantage through, for example, technological breakthroughs is very short-lived, it is the quality of management that will provide the leading edge. By using the Alumbrera project as a case study, I will identify certain of the challenges with which companies and individuals may be confronted in the establishment of a greenfields project outside Australia. However, many of the issues raised will have direct application in the context of the development of an Australian operation. My objective is to provide an indication of areas which should be considered at the formative stages of a projectÆs development, with particular focus on the issues of people management. I would expect that such a study would be of benefit to companies, education institutions and individuals in preparing themselves for similar experiences.

Since 1985 there has been a revival in the alluvial gold mining industry in North Queensland. However, not all mines which have been established have been successful, some times due to a misconception that alluvial mines are quick to establish and easy to operate. A check list of factors which need to be considered when assessing alluvial mining projects in North Queensland is presented and their relative importance is briefly discussed.

It is always difficult to sum up an open forum adequately and instantaneously, so, with the privilege of hindsight, and also with some time to reflect, I am exercising the Chairman's prerogative to put together my view of the overall conclusions. Hopefully, these may provide a focus for each Institute to formulate its own programme with respect to mineral industry education. First, in answer to the question, "Should there be Schools of Mines?", there was a very clear 'yes'. However, I reiterate what I said in the introduction to this forum, specific professional education for the mineral industry exists only because the mineral industry sees a need and wants it. If the mineral industry should decide that it does not need professionals with specific mineral industry training, then such training will cease to exist. As alluded by Dr Hackett, if such training ceases to exist, one must then question the need for Institutes of Mining and Metallurgy. Now, there's some food for thought! Specialist schools of mines (metallurgy and geology) can only exist in an environment of genuine interaction with, and support by, industry. For their part, schools of mines, used here in a generic sense, require leadership that is strong but responsive to industry needs. It is the leader that puts his stamp on a school, and, to a large extent, determines whether that school is 'good' or only 'mediocre'.

The organisers of this function have suggested that this presentation should accomplish the following broad goals:set the technical tone for the conference to follow, implying some discussion of the æstate-of-the-artÆ of reserve estimation; and raise some current and common problems or deficiencies in our art in order to be thought provoking. As an engineer it is always easier to raise problems than to solve them with state-of-the-art. Consequently, I have had to limit the extensive list of problems that could have been discussed within this presentation. In regard to the state-of-the-art, this presentation will not be an esoteric discussion of the latest statistical estimation processes, although I intend to challenge those with skills in that area to address some of the thought provoking issues later on. The subtitle of the paper was established after reading an excerpt from æLife on the MississippiÆ by the American humorist Mark Twain in which Twain observed that the Mississippi River had become shorter during his working period on the River due to natural cut-offs and man made channels. Projecting into the future, he calculated that by now, Cairo, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana would become a single city with one mayor (the two cities are still separated by some 500 air miles). As a moral to this story Mark Twain observed that one can obtain: æwholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of factÆ.
