Key incompatible element ratios for metabasalts from the Early Permian Croisilles and Patuki Volcanics, South Island, New Zealand, provide constraints on the tectonic environment in which their precursor ophiolitic protolith formed. Two geochemically distinct metabasalt suites are recognised among both the Croisilles and Patuki rocks. Metabasalts from one suite exhibit the geochemical signatures of depleted tholeiites from oceanic spreading ridges (N-type MORB) or spreading centres in evolved back-arc basins. These N-type tholeiites show high Zr/Nb ratios (Zr/Nb = 37-62) and are depleted in light rare earth elements (LREE)((La/Y)N

The applicability of Bieniawski and Hoek-Brown empirical strength criteria has been assessed for different groups of coal and various types of intact rocks by using a vast number of published triaxial test data from various places. Analysis of individual data sets revealed that the traditional forms of the criteria do not have a perfect agreement with the data. A strong negative correlation has been observed between B in Bieniawski's criterion and m in Hoek and Brown's criterion with uniaxial compressive strength of materials. Both criteria have been modified and empirical relationships have been introduced for coal as follows:m = 62.903 - 34.213 (log pc) 0.9772B = 10.152 - 4.709 (log pc )0.8889Similar relationships have been developed for different rock types as well.A comparison between the applicability of each of the above approaches with the conventional criteria reveals a very significant advantage for new approaches and a supremacy for the Bieniawski criterion in all cases particularly in the case of coal.The modified Bieniawski criterion fits coal as well as different types of rocks with excellent accuracy.The modified Hoek-Brown criterion gives a good result for rocks but does not fit coal data quite well. In other words, Hoek-Brown criterion is not an suitable one for coal.

In Australia 'there are hidden deposits of gold, copper, tin, lead and zinc which can be found by drilling at reasonable expense in view of the imp9rtance of the objectives. Exploration of the prospects in mind would mean about a million feet of drilling. The purpose of this paper is to outline, in a technical way, some of the geological thinking that has been given to this matter. To do this, it is necessary to unify the wider ranging thoughts into some sort of coherent perspective and also into some sort of logical sequence. This will be done by treating first the geological subject material which is in fact, at the foundation of the exploratory scheme. With this base, the argument will be continued through a sequence of prospect thinking and brought to a conclusion in regard to the practical employment of geology in the drilling planning. In this knitting together of ideas, the discussion will be given substance by welding into the argument the reasoning that has been applied to the Cobar prospect. The word "optimization", refers to the search of an economic optimum, or, more precisely, to the choice of technical parameters which will define the more profitable mining project, knowing the values of the economic parameters. In fact, there is no direct way to perform this optimization, because the extremely large number of technical factors involved, from the type of working and its selectivity to the characteristics of the mill and its flexibility, makes it impossible to make a comprehensive survey of all possible projects. Beside, it would be meaningless to engage in such a task as the deposits themselves are not really known, but only estimated, with sometimes a high level of imprecision. Not to mention the numerical instability which would affect such a computation! In addition, the "best" project is not necessarily the one which strictly maximizes a given profit formula. There also exist human factors which have to be complied with, when choosing the cutoff grades for instance. Finally, there are other non-numerical factors which interfere with the choice between several projects: the shape of the bottom of a pit of the layout of the access road for instance.

When the original Mount Gunson joint venture,between CSR Limited and United Uranium N.L. ceased operations in December 1971, an intensive exploration campaign was launched to prospect for more ore in the Mount Gunson region. This campaign resulted in the dis- covery'of the Cattle Grid copper deposit. A comprehensive sampling pro- gramme including the sinking of over 200 diamond drill holes and two vertical shafts,proved the existence of 4.6 million tonnes of ore, at a mean grade of 2.4% Cu,calculated at 1.00% Cu cutoff.

The most frequently applied project evaluation criteria are the Net Present Value, the Internal Rate of Return, and the Pay Back Period. Unfortunately, the Internal Rate of Return and the Pay Back Period, if interpreted according to their traditional definitions, easily produce results which contradict the Net Present Value. The reasons for the Net Present Value incompatibility of the two criteria are that these criteria have not been adequately defined and so new, complete definitions are recommended. The concept of the True Rate of Return is proposed as a substitute for the interest rate that the Internal Rate of Return has been believed to represent. The redefined Internal Rate of Return and Pay Back Period criteria, as well as the True Rate of Return are all Net Present Value compatible and can, therefore, serve as independent project evaluation criteria. Also, the correct approach to the evaluation of mutually exclusive alternatives and the status of the often neglected borrowing projects in project evaluation are found to be quite important.

The Selective Precipitation (Basics) Process is a means of controlling impurities such as the ions of Mn, Mg, and Cl as well as sulphate and water, in an electrolytic zinc plant circuit. This is achieved by precipita- ting zinc selectively as a basic zinc sulphate from a portion of impure circuit solution. The impurities remain in the solution, which can be discarded, while the zinc, substantially free of impurities, is returned to the main circuit by using the precipitate as a neutral- ising reagent. A description of the process and its development to a full scale operating plant at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited is Presented.

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. Wrenching between basement blocks is considered to be the mechanism whereby a well developed set of en echelon folds and an associated fracture system are developed in the Fitzroy Depression, Western Australia. The regular geometry of these structures accords with a right lateral regional coupling between high-standing, basement blocks bounding a trough filled with a thick pile of stratified Phanerozoic sediments. The structures developed during or after the Mesozoic Era, but the couple is inferred to have been applied to blocks outlined by old lineaments, which may reflect strains or ruptures in basement that developed during the Precambrian, and which were regenerated during Palaeozoic and Mesozoic time.

This paper describes the conver- gence and load measurements carried out in inclined seams at five longwall faces, two of which were supported by hydraulic props and the other three by conventional timber supports in Karadon-Gelik mine. The minimum support capacities determined in this study are compared with the results obtained from two empirical approaches suggested by Wilson (1975) and Jacobi (1981). The characteristics of hydraulic props to be used and support patterns in the longwalls are found, conclu- sions are drawn and suggestions are made. Design nomograms are prepared for field engineers, in order to be able to approach the problem more confidently and realistically.

Many low sulphidation epizonal gold and zinc-lead vein deposits within magmatic arcs are situated on basement highs, and post-date both the main volcanic episode and porphyry copper (gold) mineralization. These features are best explained by emplacement of a flat batholith a few kilometres beneath each mineral district, as recently demonstrated by geophysical data in the Baia Mare district of Romania. The batholith provides heat for the hydrothermal system, and results in extensional faulting both through up-doming of the overlying rocks, and in some arcs through incipient collapse of the thermally weakened crust under regional extensional stress. More water-rich magmas emplaced at greater depths could explain some deep epizonal and mesothermal gold deposits situated outside magmatic arcs.

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

But to be successful, that is to deliver long-term value creation, benchmarking must be holistic and align operational performance with strategic intent. This paper outlines a rigorous and structured approach on how to conduct a successful benchmarking program that aligns operational performance with the businessÆs goals. Further it investigates the benefits that benchmarking can provide throughout the project life cycle and provides some key learnings from some of the worldÆs leading miners.

An algorithm is described which leads directly to a unique set of coal washing parameters which, in two or more parallel streams, will give maximum yield of product at a given ash. This occurs when all parallel streams are washed to the same incremental ash. This strategy is shown to offer a considerable increase in yield compared to the simpler strategy of washing each stream to the same sumulative ash.

Mining of sill pillars is more difficult than the ordinary mining. The sill pillar mining is performed under more difficult conditions and the mining of the sill pillar itself produces more problems; failure of the rock due to high stresses, difficulties in controlling the fill above, overall stability of the stope and special requirements on the technique for backfilling. Altogether this makes sill pillar mining technically difficult and often not profitable. A project was therefore initiated with the aim to increase the mineable ore reserve by making sill pillars mineable, both technically and economically. The project aimed at developing technique for already existing sill pillars as well as planned sill pillars. For the existing sill pillars a technique would have to be developed for mining beneath unstabilised fill. For sill pillars that would be created in the future, the most suitable mining method and methods of supporting or stabilising the fill in the stope above was to be chosen within the project.
