SIROSMELT is a successful new pyrometallurgi- cal furnace system using a top-entry lance which can be submerged in both slag and matte. The lance is of simple construction, and is cooled by process air. Pilot plant work commenced in the CSIRO Division of Chemical Engineering in 1972 using a 50 kg batch reactor. This paper traces the development of the technology through various slag cleaning and smelting processes up to a scale of 5 tonnes per hour continuous feed. Strong co- operation between CSIRO and the Australian smelting industry has contributed greatly to the success of SIROSMELT.

In 1985 a 2.5-tonne top blown rotary converter was installed in the silver refinery at Cominco's Trail Operation to carry out the final cupellation of burndown metal to Dore metal. The furnace is fired with an oxygen-natural gas lance which is capable of achieving a variety of furnace conditions, varying from reducing to highly oxidizing. Reaction rates are about 4 times greater than using conventional cupel furnaces. The faster reaction rates improve productivity and reduce in-process precious metal tie-up. The furnace is also used to reduce litharge slag for bismuth recovery.

Flinders Mines is an ASX300 iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past three years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 740 Mt at a grade of 55.4 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains based on geometallurgical and geochemical boundaries. These domains are comprised of transported haematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant Channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded Brockman iron deposits (BID). On the basis of differences in physical and chemical characteristics, the DID have been divided into four discrete units. The four DID units form a stratigraphic sequence with the iron grade increasing and the contaminant concentrations decreasing with depth. The upper DID unit is lower grade and currently unlikely to provide a marketable product, without signifi cant beneficiation. The lower three DID units, together with the CID and BID, are of a higher quality and have the potential to yield marketable ore. The ability to define and recognise these different units has resulted in a more reliable and robust geological interpretation and hence greater confidence in the resulting resource model. This has been evident in the excellent conversion of inferred to indicated resources.

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. A useful way to assess potential productivity of SLC mines is by quantifying tonnes/drawpoint/day to be extracted from the mine. However limited industry information has been published to help mines benchmark this number. This paper assesses industry data which can be used to support estimates of potential productivity from new mines based on tonnes/drawpoint/day. The information used has been extracted from historical production schedules which indicate what was achieved, rather than what was planned. It has been assessed using an algorithm created for the purpose and is presented with discussion of varying definitions of active drawpoints, analysis of the data and inquiry into some of the underlying contributing factors.

Western Europe, Japan, and the U.S. are reacting to these changes with varying degrees of confidence or timidity.Technical and economic developments continue to have a substantial effect on the fortunes of the mineral industries. Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention remains a priority focus within high-risk industries sector. A major mining operation sought to strengthen their approach to the management of high-risk activities through an in-depth review of all historical incidents that had serious injury or fatality potential (SIFp) events (sometimes known as hi-potential events). The analysis found that the organisation invested a disproportionate level of resources, time and effort on low consequence incidents with a high proportion of SIFp incidents going under the radar. It was found that 76 per cent of SIFp incidents were rated in moderate or lower risk categories and conversely, almost half of those incidents with a ‘serious risk’ rating had little or no potential for a serious outcome. As a result of this project, the operation engaged in a renewed focus on critical risk management and enhanced its operating cadence in critical risk for the workforce. This included bow tie analysis, an update to critical risk standards and increased workforce engagement in the use of critical control verifications in the field. Data analytics with lead and lag indicators continue to provide senior leadership team and risk owners with an understanding of exposure for SIFp and control effectiveness. The audience will take away learnings from a real-world case study that provides data-driven insights of the human, local and organisational factors contributing to incidents with SIF potential. In addition, participants will understand the steps taken to categorise and analyse this incident data and the initiatives currently being implemented by the organisation as a result.

The ore mined from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangano-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations.Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14 - 18 per cent lead; 3.0 - 4.5 oz silver per tonne, and 9.5 - 12.0 per cent zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from six to eight per cent lead, 1.5 oz silver per ton, 18 - 25 per cent zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals, calcite, rhodonite, bustamite - are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce:1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufftcient granular material to be utilised as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of jigging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Two primary grinding sections were installed, each consisting of two 5 ft diameter by 10ft long tube mills loaded with flint pebbles working in closed circuit with four 3 ft diameter by 3 ft wide revolving screens covered with 22mesh Toncap woven wire screen with 0.57 mm opening. Each section carried a circulating load of 28.3 tons per hour for a jig.

A minimum target of economic growth in Australia has been set at 5% per annum growth in G.N.P. at constant prices (Vernon Committee). 2. The core of the problem of sustaining steady growth at this or a similar rate is to ensure regular flows of investment. This sustains productivity, helps to control balance of payments pressures, and to check inflation. 3. The regular intake of human and physical resources, in conjunction with intensive capital development involving finance, technology and management, is basic to sustaining the growth rate and ensuring rising standards of living.

The detailed work done by Stillwell and Edwards on the occurrence of cobaltite and safilorite-Iollingite at the South Mine, followed by its presentation as a paper to the Institute, calls for, a few notes on its occurrence elsewhere in the Broken Hill field. No massive cobaltite similar to that in the South Mine veinlet is known except from the Consols Mine (as mentioned in the paper). Fine grained cobaltite has, however, been found in low-grade ore from the North Mine. Microscopic grains occur in a mineralized green feldspar pegmatite. The feldspar has been replaced in part by graphite, and the cobaltite occurs in association with the graphite. In its hardness, pinkish-white colour, and resistance to the standard etchingqeagents it is similar to the South Mine cobaltite; it is etched by acid permanganate solution. An interesting feature of this occurrence is the way in- which some of the minerals (notably galena) have forced apart the graphite lamellae in crystallizing, forming lenses enclosed by the curved cleavage surlaces 0;[ the graphite.StillwelI and Edwards cite a note by G. Smitht for the statement that "cobaltite has been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols Lode in the vicinity of the rich silver deposits, though not in contact with them."Smith, however, is here referring to the oxidized zone. Elsewhere in the same article he states "... a deposit of cobaltite in a very much altered condition was found. This was impregnated with silver, and assayed as high as 3,000 ounces," Of the cobaltite in the unoxidized zone, Smith simply states that it became rarer with depth.Cobaltite has also been recognized by Mr. H. F. Whitworth, M.SC., Curator of the Mining Museum, Sydney, in specimens from Burt's Copper Mine eight miles south of Broken Hill.

"Underground mine scheduling decision-making has been based on production requirements, equipment productivities and the mine planner’s instincts on the best scheduling strategy for the mine to optimise the net present value (NPV) of a project.In the last few years, innovative software has been developed to optimise underground schedules based on NPV. The schedule optimisation tool (SOT) allows the user to set up scenarios based on grade, metal content, capital and operating costs.This paper discusses the results of two case studies undertaken using the SOT software to optimise the NPV of the projects.In each case study, the SOT software has been applied in two ways:using the original mine planner’s scenario and determining whether the NPV could be improved by changing resource capacitieschanging the scheduling goals to determine whether a different mining strategy would have a better NPV outcome.The outcomes of the case studies demonstrate that the mine layout and design were contributing factors to the overall improvement of the NPV and that SOT has a more noticeable impact on the NPV of projects where less sequence constraints are required, such as geotechnical sequencing and access development.CITATION:Ebbels, A M, 2016. The physical properties of monazite and the minerals with which it is associated in east coast beach sands are studied and discussed. Possible means for improving recovery are examined. In particular, it is suggested that the practice of splitting the heavy mineral concentrate into two parts as a preliminary to treatment in separate "rutile" and "zircon" mills can be modified in a simple fashion by the addition of an extra magnetic separation stage so as to aid monazite recovery.INTRODUCTIONBeach sand deposits on the east coast of Australia are a major source of rutile and zircon, and supply 80 per cent or more of world requirements. The deposits also contain a small amount of monazite, averaging about 0.5 per cent of the total heavy minerals. Yet despite a steady price in recent years of £150-160 per ton, monazite production has remained relatively small.On the basis of rutiIe production, potential monazite production on the east coast was about 1,500 tons in 1956, but only 102 tons of high-grade concentrate was produced. The main deterrent to increased production has probably been the capital cost of the necessary equipment. Separate electrostatic and magnetic equipment and separate table concentration and drying constitute a considerable outlay for a by-product contributing 4 to 5 per cent of the revenue from rutiIe.It is the purpose of this paper to discuss monazite concentration generally and to suggest modifications to flowsheets, which may facilitate monazite production while maintaining the main objective, simple and cheap means for maximum rutile production.

The role and importance of a well designed test work program during the development of an orebody is often underestimated. A test work program should be tailored to deliver very specific answers to relevant questions. With a clear purpose, the results from the test work program will enhance the outcome of the feasibility study and provide the information required to meet the requirements of all stakeholders. With regard to test work programs there are three main areas that should be considered: orebody characterisation and definition, process flow sheet development and engineering design information.Orebody definition relies on reliable analytical methods to characterise and assess the economic minerals present in the ground. In mineral sands, the physical processing characteristics of the minerals play a significant role in the definition of an orebody. The analytical method therefore has to be customised using a combination of laboratory techniques. These techniques can include heavy liquid separation, gravity separation and magnetic separation and are usually combined with chemical and mineralogical analyses to create a picture of the orebody. During the definition phase of test work programs, an appropriate analytical technique has to be developed to evaluate drilling samples, but also to support the information collected during flow sheet development.Process flow sheet development is usually done once there is a reasonable understanding of the size and variability of the orebody. Selecting the best sample for test work is critical, as any flow sheet design is tied to the specific characteristics of the sample used for development. There are other factors that can improve the outcomes of flow sheet development test work, including the skills and knowledge of the operator and allowing sufficient time to process and analyse the results. Very often this work is conducted under pressure with limited time and resources, only to result in a suboptimal flow sheet. During this phase of flow sheet test work, iterative testing will provide the information required to develop an optimal metallurgical flow sheet. The data collected will provide indicative recoveries and yields that are required for feasibility studies.Equipment specification is often included as part of process flow sheet development. This includes comparative test work between different equipment suppliers, assessment of operating conditions such as the loading to determine the number of processing units required, as well as other design information required such as particle size distributions, density and operating temperatures.While restricting the time and costs expended on test work programs may seem to meet a short term need to meet investor requirements, neglecting to develop a proper framework of the requirements that has to be met in the long-term can lead to significant long-term cost overruns. This is mainly due to a need to repeat test work, or do confirmation test work, as insufficient information was collected during the initial program.

This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.

Nautilus Minerals Inc is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.Economies depend upon four key types of capital: built, natural, financial and human. Natural capital consists of the ‘minerals, energy, plants, animals, ecosystems (climatic processes, nutrient cycles and other natural structures and systems) found on Earth that provide a flow of natural goods and services’ (Daly and Farley, 2004). Many ecosystem goods such as fish, fruit and water are already valued and sold in markets; however, some ecosystem services are not amenable to markets and have remained unvalued in traditional accounting methods, even though they provide significant value (such as flood protection, climate stability etc; Batker and Schmidt, 2015).There are now economic methods available to quantify and value natural capital and many non-market ecosystem services. When valued in dollars, these services can be incorporated into a number of economic tools, including benefit-cost analysis, accounting, environmental impact statements, asset management plans and rate of return on investment calculations. Their inclusion ultimately strengthens decision-making. When natural capital assets and ecosystem services are not considered in economic analysis, they are effectively valued at zero. This omission can lead to poor decisions, inefficient capital investments, higher incurred costs and losses due to unexpected events (Batker and Schmidt, 2015).In 2015 Earth Economics was commissioned by Nautilus Minerals Inc to conduct an independent, objective environmental and social benchmarking analysis of the proposed deep seabed Solwara 1 mine with terrestrial copper mines (referred to as ‘the report’). The report represents the first ever natural capital accounting and ecosystem goods and services framework for seabed mining.The report compares the proposed Solwara 1 mine with three terrestrial mines: Bingham Canyon (Utah, USA), Prominent Hill (South Australia, Australia), and Intag (a proposed mine in Intag Province, Ecuador), and provides a natural capital accounting assessment for all four operations.CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016.
