The success of a collector vehicle, designed to recover manganese nodules under the conditions which exist in deep ocean mine sites will in part be determined by the effectiveness of pick-up and running gear mechanisms. For the purpose of qualitative comparison, some specific aspects of seafloor interactions with various concepts are reviewed utilizing existing data on seafloor characteristics and running gear/tool interaction with soils.

The TTT curves of 0.1 pct C, 13 pct Cr steels containing up to 12 pct Co have been determined in order to establish whether the effect of cobalt is similar to that observed m plain carbon steels. It is shown that cobalt increases the incubation time and decreases the transformation rate, though not in an uniform way. The bainitic transfornation is displaced to lower temperature and overlaps partially the martensitic zone. ThE effect of cobalt on the transformation of a plain carbon austenite has been studied by many investi-gators.'-3 It was shown that cobalt displaces the TTT curves to shorter times and diminishes the harden-ability. The interpretations given for this effect of cobalt are conflicting. According to E. Houdremont,4 cobalt increases the transformation rate of austenite because it increases the diffusion of carbon as shown in the experiments of E. Houdremont and H.Schrader,' R.Smoluchowski,5 and M. Blanter.6 On the other hand, M. Hawites and R. Mehl3 deny on the basis of their own experiments any effect of cobalt on the diffusion of carbon and they assume that an explanation should be found in an eventual effect of cobalt on the mechanism of nucleation and growth of pearlite. W. C. Hagel, G. M. Pound, and R. F. Mehl7 have shown by calorimetric measurements that cobalt increases the free energy of the austenite-pearlite transformation in an eutectoid steel and this result explains qualitatively the observed effect of cobalt on the rate of nucleation and growth of pearlite. The equilibrium constants developed by Souders, Selheimer and Brown1' have been very useful tools in predicting vapor-liquid equilibria during the past five years. Their equilibrium constants were computed by assuming ideal solutions and recognizing the deviations of vapors from ideal gas laws. The same fundamental concepts were used by Lewis and co-workers8 for predicting vaporization phenomena by means of fugacities. The equilibrium constant is defined by equation 1: y\x =K [1] in which K = equilibrium constant, y = mol fraction of a constituent in the vapor phase, x = mol fraction of the constituent in the equilibrium liquid phase. The equilibrium constants are a function of temperature and pressure and might be considered as replacing the ratio of the vapor pressure to the total pressure of Raoult's law. They may be used to compute the vapor or saturation pressure of a liquid or the dew point of a vapor for any pressure or temperature from the analysis of the mixture much as Raoult's law is used. Likewise, the quantity of a mixture that will vaporize at any equilibrium temperature and pressure and the composition of the vapor and liquid may be calculated. The purpose of this paper is to review the available equilibrium data of interest in petroleum production, to discuss the auxiliary physical properties of the hydrocarbons, and to present typical uses of the equilibrium constants. The particular applications chosen are the computation of the results of stage separation of crude oil and natural gas, the calcula: tion of a pressure-volume curve of a crude oil-natural gas mixture, and information gleaned from a consideration of reservoir equilibria.

The pain boundary relaxation phenomenon in high-purity copper, 0FHC copper, and a precipitation-hardenable alloy o-fCu-2 uit pct Co has been studied by internal ,friction and elastic aftereffect techniques. The data were analyzed by assuming the broad distribution of relaxation times observed obeys a lognormal distribution law which enables calculation of the relaxation strength. Grain size had no effect on relaxation strength, although the peak width increased with increasing grain size and decreasing temperature. A double grain boundary peak was produced in high-purity copper by annealing to produce secondary recrystallization. The activation energy measured for 99.999 pct Cu is 37.5 * 3 kcal per mol and 46.5 kcal per mole for OFHC copper. A small peak in the Cu-Co alloy at about 220°C at 1 cps was deduced to be the grain boundary peak. Its height increased and its activation energy decreased with increasing aging time. Except for erratic peak positions the observations were consistent with the theory of pain boundary sliding. BEFORE the mechanism of the grain boundary internal friction peak in metals can be satisfactorily explained, the detailed characteristics of the relaxation process must be documented. Of interest are the effect of grain size on relaxation strength, the high-temperature background, and peak width and position. The effect on the grain boundary peak of a precipitate at grain boundaries and of the change in distribution of the particles with aging time must also be explained by any existing or forthcoming theory. The model which has received the most attention was proposed by KG' and zener2 and proposes that the anelastic strain results from sliding of adjacent crystals at grain boundaries. The sliding is limited by the interlocking of grain corners. It follows, according to this model, that the relaxation strength is independent of and the relaxation time is proportional to the grain size. The proportionality between grain size, D, and relaxation time, t, has been confirmed by K&' and Bisseliches . In this case, the internal-friction peaks of various specimens can be superimposed by plotting Q-' as a function of the parameter vD exp H/RT where v is the frequency and H the activation energy. However, the data of Starr et 01.' and Leak6 fit better to a parameter containing D to an exponent near two. A meaningful relationship is not always deducible from the shift of peak temperature with grain size. KG7 demonstrated that a twofold variation in grain size obtained by varying the amount of cold work followed by identical recrystallization anneals will cause a peak shift that is too large to be accounted for even by an exponent of two. Since the decreased grain boundary area existing with a larger grain size is exactly compensated for by an increased sliding distance, the relaxation strength should not decrease with increasing grain size. The height of the internal-friction peak has generally been observed to be rather insensitive to grain size as long as the average grain diameter does not approach the specimen diameter. Exceptions have been reported by Koster, Bangert, and Lang8 for copper, and by Leak6 for iron. The observations for copper could well have been confused by the presence df 0.3 pct0. The possibility that the peaks may simply be increasing in width with increasing grain size and that the relaxation strength, which is proportional to the area under the peak, may remain constant was not examined. his point has been checked in this investigation using high-purity copper. Atomic mechanisms to account for damping by sliding at grain boundaries have been proposed by KG7 and Mott. KG predicts the activation energy to be identical to that for self-diffusion. Mott's "island" model suggests the activation energy is nL where n is the number of atoms in an island and L is the latent heat of fusion per atom. Prof. H. S. Munroe, New York City : In his reference to cop per-dressing at Lake Superior, p. 325, Mr. Douglas says that " the .. concentration .. . has been carried out with greatest financial economy,... I do not say with the greatest economy of min eral." And again, on p. 344, referring to the same, " it would not pay to reduce the quantity treated, and increase hand-labor, in order to save a few hundredths of one per cent. of copper." Mr. Douglas probably has in mind the fact that the copper lost is all included copper, locked op in grains of sand. To save this, the rock must be crushed finer. If the mesh of the stamp-screens be reduced, the stamps will crush less; and thus we shall have to reduce the quantity treated in the mill per day, while the labor re mains the same per day, or is increased per ton, as he says. Submitting to the loss of copper, however, is not the only solution of the difficulty. A large quantity of rich sand is now collected by the jigs, and it would be easy to save so much of this material that the escaping sands would be quite poor. What is wanted at Lake Superior, and at many dressing-works in this country, is an efficient crushing-machine to treat the sands thus collected. Abroad, we have the Heberle machine and the Schranz mill for this purpose, the latter being the more successful. The Heberle grinder was tried at the Calumet and Hecla mill for crush ing these rich sands, with what success I do not know. I should like to ask Mr. Douglas if we have no American crushing-machine that will reduce jig-sands to a fine state of division

F A. THOMSON, president of the Montana School of Mines, gave an interesting talk on mining schools of the past, present and his ideas of the future before a recent meeting of the Montana Section of the A. I. M. E. He covered the history .of the various mining schools and com- pared the three main types of schools; those attached to or forming part of an endowed college or university such, for example, as' the Columbia School of Mines, the Mining Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Mining Department of Stanford University. These resemble in a general way the second class, those attached to the state universities and colleges. The schools of this general type have had varied success.

Some mining engineers are pursuing their destinies in places far removed from what they might have envisioned back in the classroom. The path they follow to work each day may wind down Wall St., Park Avenue, LaSalle, or Market; their offices are in modern skyscrapers which offer all the amenities-air conditioning, thick carpets, attractive decor, and executive lunchrooms, to name just a few. The papers on their desks are a combination of financial figures and feasibility studies. But even in these surroundings there are indications of what these men do and where their professional interests lie-minerals are everywhere, from vast collections to one symbolic paperweight. . . there are sometimes specks of dirt under fingernails from a recent on-site inspection, belying the traditional banker's garb. . . and there are the wistful comments about finding it necessary to get out in the field.

DESPITE the rapidity of chemical reactions at steelmaking temperatures, deoxidation reactions cannot be expected to reach equilibrium immediately after addition of a deoxidizing agent. A considerable period of time may be required merely to obtain complete mixing of the deoxidizing element throughout the volume of steel to which it is added. Evidence in the literature indicates that in some cases the time is long compared with that allowed for completion of the experiment or for teeming of the heat. The great turbulence observed during the filling of the ladle is no guarantee of complete dispersion on a fine scale throughout the heat. During the process there are initially certain volume elements which are high in deoxidizer and others which retain substantially their original oxygen content. Mixing consists of the subdivision and ultimate destruction of these liquid segregates through the process of shear and elimination of concentration gradients by diffusion. The shear process does not continue indefinitely and a quiescent state may be reached in the ladle before all volume elements of divergent deoxidizer and oxygen content are completely eliminated. In furnace deoxidation the time required for complete mixing may be very long unless continuous stirring is employed.' In Fig. 1, let the circle represent one small volume element of aluminum-rich metal surrounded by oxygen-rich steel in which no stirring movement remains. Further mixing requires inward diffusion of oxygen and outward diffusion of aluminum, resulting in precipitation of A12O3 in the diffusion zone. It is important to note that such a precipitate may itself interfere with the diffusion process. Moreover, if the precipitate forms as a film with even minimal mechanical strength, it may interfere not only with diffusion but with shear as well, thus stabilizing compositional differences in volume elements of greater than microscopic size. A film surrounding such a volume element would have little or no ability to rise or to sink unless it enclosed a liquid whose density differed from that of the ambient. Consider now the effect on the overall composition of the melt. Fig. 2 represents the A1-O equilibrium at the temperature of the bath. High-aluminum elements of composition X may exist alongside high-oxygen elements of composition Y in such proportions that the average composition 2 has a much higher A1-O product than that corresponding to equilibrium. The A1-O product supposedly corresponding to equilibrium at 1600 °C was found by Wentrup and Hieber2 to be 10-10, by Hilty and crafts3 to be 2 X 10-9 and by Gokcen and chipman4 to be 2 x 10-14. Nitrogen exists in two broad categories commonly designated as elemental nitrogen and fixed nitrogen. Elemental nitrogen is found in nature as a diatomic molecule and constitutes about 78%, by volume, of the earth's atmosphere. Fixed nitrogen is a common term used for nitrogen that is chemically bound to other elements. Although elemental nitrogen is very abundant, nonleguminous plants cannot utilize nitrogen unless it is in the chemically combined form. The content of this chapter is confined to fixed nitrogen since the uses and properties of elemental nitrogen and the fixed nitrogen compounds are different. Certain bacteria associated with legumes are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen, but not to the extent required by succeeding nonleguminous crops. The need to use fertilizers containing fixed nitrogen compounds to grow food crops has been recognized for hundreds of years, and from antiquity farmers have used organic wastes such as animal manures, vegetable wastes, sewage sludge, fish scraps, etc., containing these compounds for fertilizers. These organic materials have a low nitrogen content, however, and cannot support large-scale food production. Known commercial-size deposits of natural nitrates containing much higher nitrogen content exist only in Chile, and the possibility of the discovery of other significant deposits is remote. The Chilean deposits were the major source of nitrogenous fertilizers until the Haber-Bosch process for the production of synthetic ammonia was developed. In the Haber-Bosch process, nitrogen reacts with hydrogen at high temperatures and pressures and in the presence of a catalyst to form ammonia. Modern plants use air, water, and natural gas or other hydrogen sources to produce the ammonia that is now the key building block of the fixed nitrogen industry. Several major problems that developed in the 1970s continue with the nitrogen industry into the 1980s. These are (1) the continuing sharp escalation in the cost of feedstocks for ammonia production as well as all energy sources, and (2) the very steep increase in the investment cost of production facilities. More than 75% of the fixed nitrogen produced domestically is consumed as fertilizers. The types of materials used as fertilizers have changed significantly during the past years. There has been a trend from the use of low-analysis fertilizers to types which contain high percentages of plant nutrients. The average plant nutrient content (N + P2O5 + K2O) of fertilizers used in the United States has increased from 18% in 1930 to 32% in 1960 and today approaches an average of 44%. In the case of nitrogen fertilizers, the low analysis natural nitrates (16% N) gave way to ammonium sulfate (20% N) after about 1920. After World War II, ammonium nitrate (33.5% N) previously used in munitions, became established as the leading nitrogen fertilizer. Urea use as a fertilizer (46% N) began in the 1960s, and in the past 10 years has become the world's leading solid nitrogen fertilizer. Nitrogen Materials Anhydrous Ammonia-Anhydrous ammonia is a colorless gas at ambient temperatures and pressures and has a sharp pungent odor. Anhydrous ammonia is stored and transported as a liquid in high-pressure cylinders and tanks at ambient temperature, and in low-pressure tanks, barges, and ships at -28°F. Anhydrous ammonia is applied directly at 4 to 7-in. depths in the soil as a high-pressure liquid by special applicators, after which it expands to a gas that dissolves in the soil moisture or is absorbed on soil colloids. In other systems ammonia is metered into irrigation water and is thereby introduced into the soil.

The district is described by Emmons in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 408, 1910. Little was said of the Elko Prince, however, as only a small amount of work had then been completed. The geological structure of the region is simple. The oldest exposed formation, covering most of the area, is rhyolite, which has a light-colored devitrified groundmass enclosing phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, and magnetite. It has been somewhat weathered and partially stained with oxide of iron. There are several outcrops of andesite which cut the rhyolite. The ore deposits occur as fissure veins, replacement veins, and sheeted zones. The Elko Prince vein is of the first type. The rhyolite near the veins is silicified, stained with oxide of iron, and, at some localities, replaced by ore, or is so permeated by metals as to be classed as ore. The vein filling consists chiefly of quartz, and the values consist entirely of gold and silver. Part of the gold exists as the native metal and part is associated with pyrite. Silver occurs free and as argentite in banded streaks through the vein. These veins trend in a northwesterly direction, with dips varying from 65' to vertical. The objective of this chapter is to review and discuss interpolation techniques commonly in use in the mining Industry today, including simple examples. This chapter will not attempt to compare the relative accuracy of each technique as this subject has adequately been covered by several authors (Knudsen and Kim, 1967; David, 1974; and Barnes, 1979) When appropriate, methods will be compared relative to the results of simple examples and computational ease. The examples presented are based on metallic deposits. The techniques, however, are not restricted to metallic deposits and can generally be applied to nonmetallic ones. The purpose of interpolation, as applied to a mineralized deposit, 1s to extend the knowledge of the grade and geology of localized samples to an estimate of the grade and mineralogy of a larger block of ground or even an entire deposit. The word interpolation means to compute values between given values and is limited to that region between the known values. The distinction between interpolation and extrapolation is important and must be adhered to in the application of these techniques in general, the interpolation must be limited to the area enclosed by verified samples. The methods being discussed can be broadly broken into three categories. ( 1 ) geometrical methods, (2) distance weighting methods, and (3) geostatistical techniques.

Anna, Ohio, at the junction of Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee arches, has been the site of repeated and sometimes damaging earthquakes. As part of a seismicity investigation near-surface (0.15-1 m depth) overcoring strain measurements were conducted in four limestone and dolomite quarries surrounding Anna, the results of which suggest a complicated regional stress pattern, with changes in the maximum horizontal stress direction from N45ºE to N15ºW. Since such abrupt stress fluctuations are rather atypical in the Midwest and since the reliability of near-surface tests in defining regional stress had not been established, we decided to remeasure the stresses at the same locations but at greater depths (0-200 m) using the hydrofracturing method. Owing to the weak horizontal bedding planes of the Silurian shaly limestones and shaly dolomites and the relatively shallow depths, many of the tests yielded horizontal fractures, providing information only on the vertical principal stress (-0.029 MPa/m depth). However, sufficient tests in each of three testholes resulted in vertical hydrofractures to enable the calculation of all three principal stresses. Within 50-170 m depth the horizontal stresses in all three quarries appear to belong to a uniform regional Stress field defined by the following relations: [']Hmin = 5.1 + 0.014 D; [0] Hmax = 10.1 + 0.014 D, where D is depth in meters. The direction of [O]Hmax within 50-170 m depth is uniform at N70°E (±15º). The hydro- fracturing results obtained at Anna, Ohio are in agreement with the prevailing stress regime in the midcontinent both with respect to magnitudes and directions. The results suggest a possible thrust mechanism for a proposed NW-SE fault along which most of the earthquake epicenters have been located, and a left lateral strike-slip at greater depths.
