SUMMARY Three gradients have been identified in regard to the average horizontal ground stress increase with depth. [S (0-900 m) = 9.86 MPa + 0.0371 MPa/m SHa (900-2200 m) = 33.41 MPa + 0.0111 MPa/m SHae (extreme)= 12.36 MPa + 0.0586 MPa/m] The extreme stress values are not caused by mining geometry and are of limited extent only. In some cases geological disturbances like faults and rock type boundaries suggest an explanation but in other cases the unusually high stresses cannot be explained readily. It is interesting to note that in the same locations the vertical stress components are very much higher than those derived from overburden weight and that the vertical stress gradient is similar to the gradient obtained from the extreme horizontal stress components. INTRODUCTION Ground stress determinations have been carried out in mines in Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, over more than a decade (Herget, 1980). Most of the sites are located in the Superior and Southern Tectonic Province of the Canadian Shield, which consist of Archaen and Proterozoic rocks comprising volcanics, metamorphosed sediments and granites. The youngest orogenic deformation occurred during the Grenville Orogeny (955 million years ago).

The 518 x 1706 mm (17 x 56 ft) double compartment ball mill at St. Lawrence Cement Co. has the fist gearless drive built in North America and has the world's largest hydrodynamic bearings currently built and running. The machine has seen three years operation and has met its specifications. The mill wm designed by Aerofall Mills Ltd. and the gearless drive built and designed by the Canadian General Electric Co. The paper discusses the operation of the machine from the mechanical, electrical and process aspects.

Metallographic and X-ray studies were made of oxide dispersion strengthened Cu-12 vol pet SiO2 and Cu-3.5 vol pet Al2O3 alloys following time exposures at temperatures approaching the melting. point of the matrix metal. Changes in hardness, oxide particle size and crystal structure were studied to determine the time-temperature stability of these alloys. An interpretation of the mechanism of oxide agglomeration is proposed. One of the most striking features of dispersion strengthened metal-metal oxide alloys is their stability at elevated temperatures, both with respect to recrystallization and maintenance of mechanical properties after exposure at high temperatures. A small amount of work has been done on the re-crystallization phenomenon in dispersion hardened metal-metal oxide alloys'l and several theoretical treatments have been advanced regarding the stability of these alloys by Lenel and Ansell,8 and by Grant and his co-workers.9, 10 This paper reports on metallographic and X-ray studies following various heat treatments of Cu-AI2D3 and Cu-SiO2 alloys at elevated temperatures and the effect of subsequent cold work on the recrystallizalion temperature. An interpretation of the recrystallization behavior of this type of alloy, based on the decomposition and agglomeration of oxides, is proposed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Cast ingot bars of copper-1.59 pet Si and Cu-0.77 pet Al, 7/8 in in diam, were annealed in argon for 80 hr at 1000CC for homogenization. The homogenized rods were machined into fine chips and ball milled. Milled particles in the range minus 20 to plus 60 mesh were separated for internal oxidation. The internal oxidation was accomplished by the same method used by Preston and Grant,9 except that the oxidalion temperature for the Cu-Si alloy was 750°C, and for the Cu-A1 alloy was 800°C. These powders were then hydrogen-reduced at 450°C, compacted in a copper container, evacuated at room temperature to 0.04 µ, and sealed for extrusion. They were extruded at 1400°F (760°C) with a ram speed of 55 in. per min for an extrusion ratio of 15.6 to 1 to give a rod 0.38 in. diam by about 3 ft long.

The lanthanide elements from lanthanum (atomic number 57) to lutetium (71) plus yttrium (39) are called the rare-earth elements; scandium (21) is chemically similar to yttrium and the lanthanides, but differs in occurrence. The rare-earth metals were divided into three categories by the chemist, Berzelius, in the early 1800s; however, modern usage defines only two groups. The cerium group is named after the most abundant -element and comprises lanthanum (57), cerium (58), praseodymium (59), neodymium (60), promethium (61), samarium (62), europium (63), and gadolinium (64). Traces of natural promethium were discovered in apatite in Finland (Erametsa, 1965). The yttrium group, also named after its most abundant representative, comprises terbium (65), dysprosium (66), holmium (67), erbium (68), thulium (69), ytterbium (70), and lutetium (71). Yttrium most closely resembles holmium in chemical properties, and occurs most commonly with the heavy lanthanides. The rare-earth minerals may be divided into cerium-group, yttrium-group, or mixed-group classes. A number of rare-earth minerals contain thorium and uranium, but these are variable in content and are not essential to the composition of the minerals. In monazite, a mineral that is a principal source of rare earths, the worldwide average content of thorium oxide is 7.2 % ; however, varieties of monazite contain as little as 0.001% and as much as 31.5% thoria. Monazite is the chief ore of thorium and, until recently, thorium has been the main product; the rare-earth metals were in fact byproducts. However, because of the great demand for rare-earth metals by the petroleum refining and the iron and steel industries since the early 1970s, the roles have been reversed so that thorium is now the byproduct. Uses A 9 to 1 mixture of yttrium and thorium oxides is used for high-intensity incandescent lamps and for high-temperature-resistant windows and lenses. Yttrium oxysulfide and orthovanadate, doped with europium oxide, are used in color television tube phosphors. Yttrium, as well as cerium, praseodymium, and samarium, is alloyed with cobalt to form strong permanent magnets. It hardens magnesium alloys and retards the oxidation of iron-chromium alloys. Yttrium-iron garnets are used for transmitting low microwave frequencies. Yttrium-aluminum garnets are used as host crystals for lasers and as artificial gems. Yttria also forms strong, stable, high-temperature refractories. Gadolinium-gallium garnets are used in substrate wafers on which bubble-memory films are deposited. Rare-earth chlorides, particularly of lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium, are used as catalysts for petroleum cracking. Mischmetal is used for lighter flints and to improve the ductility and impact strength of iron and steel alloys. Mischmetal also reduces the fatigue resistance of magnesium and aluminum alloys. Rare-earth oxides are used for polishing glasses and lenses. Individual or specific combinations of high-purity oxides are used as additives in glass to maintain or change its color, dispersion, or refractive index. High-purity oxide combinations are also used to color tile and to opacify porcelain enamel. Rare-earth fluorides and oxides are used in carbon-arc electrodes to provide incandescent white light. Lanthanum or gadolinium oxysulfide phosphors, activated with terbium, are used as x-ray screen intensifiers. Hydrogen can be stored by sorption on lanthanum-nickel alloys (Anon., 1979). Thorium232 is bombarded with slow neutrons in breeder reactors to create fissionable thorium233 for nuclear fuel cells. The 330-MW, high-temperature gas-cooled reactor at Fort St.

The Bureau of Mines devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallite (KCl*MgC12*6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaCl) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes; decomposition leach (carnallite only); potash rougher, cleaner, and recleaner flotation; and final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid phase KC1 from camallite ore and 79.7% of the KCl from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5 and 60.9% K2O, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

Previous results have shown that Pyromet 860, an Fe-Ni-base heat-resistant alloy, is stable at temperatures as high as 1500°F for aging times as long as 100 hr. This Paper describes the results of long-time creep-rupture testing at 1050" to 1400°F at various stress levels. Times as long as 37,660 hr were employed. The effects of time, temperature, and stress on the precipitates and their morphologies were studied by optical and electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffraction, and microprobe techniques. phase, containing cobalt, nickel, and molybdenum, was detected after extended exposures from 1200" to 1400°F and careful study was performed to describe the kinetics of its formation in this alloy. µ phase formation apparently has little effect on the elevated-tem-perature properties of Pyromet 860. For times as long as 500 hr at 1300°F and below, with µ phase present, m significant effects on ambient temperature properties were noted. For longer times at 1300°F and after 1400°F exposure, the effects of u phase on ambient temperature tensile strength properties are not clear due to y' effects and grain boundary reactions. Electron-vacancy, N,, numbers were calculated using different methods described in literature and correlated with the present findings. In the selection of alloys for use in gas turbine applications, structural stability ranks as a primary criterion. High-temperature strength and cost are also of major concern. With these factors in mind, Pyromet 860 alloy, an Fe-Ni-base superalloy was designed. This alloy combines the cost advantages of Fe-Ni-base alloys such as A-286, 901, and V-57 with improved strength and structural stability'1,2 and no tendency to form the embrittling cellular 77 phase. A previous study3 reported on the stability of Pyro-met 860 at temperatures from 1375" to 157 5°F and times up to 100 hr. That study showed that the y' precipitates increased in size and separation and decreased in number with an increase in time or aging temperature. No deleterious phases were found to occur. In the present work, samples from four production heats were subjected to long-time creep-rupture testing at 1050" to 1400°F at various stress levels. Various heat treatments were used on the starting samples and tests were run up to 37,660 hr. The effects of time, temperature, and stress on the precipitates and their morphologies were studied by optical and electron microscopy, X-ray and electron diffrac- tion, and microprobe techniques. Electron vacancy numbers, Nv , calculations were made by TRW.4 Experimental results are correlated with the Nv data used to predict occurrence of intermetallic phases such as a phase. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mechanical Tests. Material for the present study came from four production size heats of Pyromet 860 alloy, weighing from about 3000 to about 10,000 lb. All of these heats were made by vacuum induction melting plus consumable electrode vacuum remelting. The nominal analysis for this alloy is compared with the actual analysis of the four heats in Table I. Sections of these heats were forged to 9/16-in. round bar,3/4-in. square bar, 3-in. round bar, 4-in. square bar, and a gas turbine blade forging about 16 in, long, about 6 in. wide, and weighing about 20 lb. In general, all forging of this alloy is done from a 2050°F furnace temperature. Longitudinal test blanks were cut from the centers of the smaller bars, from mid-radius positions for the 3- and 4-in. bars, and from the air foil of the gas turbine blade and heat-treated according to the procedures outlined in Table 11. Heat treatment A is the "standard treatment" recommended for this alloy for best all-around strength and ductility. Heat treatment B is a modification of treatment A for improved tensile strength at moderate temperatures. The treatment coded C was designed for treating large sections according to a procedure previously described.' Heat treatment D was developed to yield optimum stress relaxation characteristics at 1050°F for a steam turbine bolting application. After heat treatment, the test blanks were machined either to plain bar creep specimens with a gage diameter of 0.252 in., to combination smooth-notched stress-rupture bars with a plain bar diameter of 0.178 in. and a concentration factor of Kt 3.8' at the notched section, or to notch-only specimens. All specimens conformed to ASTM requirements. Metallography. Most of the creep-rupture tests were continued to failure. A few bars were fractured as smooth or notch tensiles after creep-rupture exposures. After fracturing, ordinary metallographic sections were made primarily in gage areas adjacent to fractures to represent a "high-stress" region and through specimen threads to represent a "low-stress" region. All metallographic sections were made in a longitudinal direction with respect to the test specimen axes. For optical microscopy, the samples were etched in glyceregia (15 ml HC1, 5 ml HNO,, 10 ml glycerol). For XRD analysis, the phases were extracted electrolytically in two media: 20 pct &Po4 in H20 for selective extraction of y' and 10 pct HC1 in methanol for carbides and other phases.

The process engineer is familiar with the in any methods employed in the past for analyzing various materials. These include panning. eyeballing, and wet chemistry. Of those mentioned only wet chemistry has been and will continue to be a standard measure for the elemental content in a given material. However, wet chemistry, by the very nature of the method, can be excessively time-consuming and thus reducing obviously the number of samples that may be processed in a given period. The analysis by X-ray, in most cases, requires nothing more than assurance that the sample is in a suitable state for presentation to the X-ray spectrometer.

A process has been developed for leaching copper, lead and calcium from molybdenite concentrate. The leachant is a solution containing an oxidizing chloride (e. g., CuC12, FeC13) and an alkaline earth metal chloride (e. g., CaC12). Cupric chloride and ferric chloride, in the presence of 20-30% calcium chloride, are effective oxidants for chalcopyrite and galena. Calcium chloride, in addition to promoting the rate of leaching, serves to lower the solution pH and raise the boiling point. Leaching for two hours at 110'~ with a 1 % CuC12-10% FeC13- 30% CaC12 solution results in the extraction of up to 98% of the copper in molybdenite, 98% of the lead, and 79% of the calcium. Less than 0. 5% of the molybdenum is dissolved. The leach solution can be rapidly and effectively regenerated with gaseous chlorine and recycled. Build-up of copper and lead in the leach solution is controlled by discarding about 30% of the leach solution each cycle.

The constitution of the La-Rh system was studied by powder X-ray diffraction, metallopaphic, and differential thermal analysis techniques and an equilibrium diagram is presented. Eleven intermediate phases occur in the system and the crystal structural data for nine of them were determined. La3Rh crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure of undetermined type, whose unit cell is obtained by doubling the 'a; and 'c,,' edges of an FesC type unit cell. The other intermediate phases of the system are LarRh-3( undetermined structures also occur in the system. LaRh, undergoes a polymorphic phase transformation at 1240°C. LaRh3 and La2Rh7 also exhibit polymorphisnz. The phases Laah and LazRh7 melt congruently. The latter undergoes a eutectoid transformation into LaRh, and Rh at 1205°C. Laah3 is formed by a peritectoid reaction between Laah and La,Rh,,. The other Phases result from peritectic reactions between the liquid and the adjacent rhodium-rich phases. The intermediate Phases of the La-Rh system are compared with those of the La-Co and La-Ni systems. DURING the course of a detailed investigation to study the occurrence of CrB, FeB, A1B2, and related structures in the rare earth alloys it was found that much information is lacking for the rare earth noble metal systems. Although the structures of several rare earth alloys containing the noble metals at the AB and AB2 stoichiometries have been reported, the occurrence of related structures at other stoichiometries has not been studied. We have initiated a project to study the crystal structural features of selected rare earth-rhodium alloys and to map the equilibrium diagrams of representative systems with conventional methods. The results of our investigation in the La-Rh system are presented in this paper. Two phases were known in the La-Rh system. LaRh has the CrB-type structure.' LaRhz is a MgCu2-type Laves phase.z EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys weighing less than 1 g were prepared from commercially pure lanthanum (99.9 pct +), supplied by Lunex Company, Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and rhodium (99.92 pct +), supplied by Engelhardt Industries, Newark, N.J., in a conventional arc melting furnace under argon atmosphere. The buttons were turned upside down and remelted three times to insure homogeneity in the samples. Since negligible loss of material was encountered during melting, a chemical analysis of the alloy buttons was not undertaken. Powder specimens for X-ray diffraction studies in the as cast state were then prepared. The buttons were wrapped in thin molybdenum foils and homogenized by heating in vacuum at suitable high temperatures for more than 1 week. They were then broken into three or four pieces for annealing experiments. The pieces were wrapped in molybdenum foils and annealed at various temperatures in evacuated quartz capsules. The annealing was carried out for 2 hr at or above 1200°C, 1 day at temperatures close to llOO°C, 2 days at 1000°C, and for 1 week at temperatures below 1000°C. After annealing the alloy pieces were again broken and powder specimens for X-ray diffraction were prepared. The powders of the lanthanum rich alloys with more than 80 at. pct La were prepared by filing. The filings were sealed in molybdenum tubings and stress-relieved at 600°C in vacuum. It was not deemed necessary to stress-relieve the powders of the other alloys, since the alloys were very brittle and were ground easily. POWDER X-RAY DIFFRACTION X-ray diffraction photographs of powders (-325 mesh size) of the alloys in the as cast and annealed states were prepared in a Guinier-de Wolff focussing camera with copper K, X radiations. These patterns were studied to identify the stoichiometries and the crystal structures of the intermediate phases. The lattice parameters of the phases were calculated after minimizing the differences between the observed sin2 6 values, calculated from the diffraction angles 8, and the sin2 8 values, calculated using approximate lattice constants obtained from a few lines. These differences were minimized manually to less than 0.0005. The latLice constants are judged to be accurate to *0.005A for values less thp about 10A and to k0.01~ for values greater than 10A. The relative intensities of the lines were calculated using a computer program written by Jeitschko and Parthk.~ No attempt was made to refine the atomic positional parameters in the phases. METALLOGRAPHY The phase equilibria in the investigated alloys in the as cast and annealed states were also studied by metallographic examination. The polished specimen surfaces were etched with 10 pct picric acid in alcohol (alloys up to 25 pct Rh), concentrated picric acid (from 25 to 37.5 pct Rh), 2 pct nital (40 to 50 pct Rh), 10 pct nital (from 50 to 66.7 pct Rh) and with concentrated 48 pct HF for the other rhodium-rich alloys. THE (001) planes have been reported as the cleavage planes in body-centered cubic metals such as alpha-iron and tungsten.' However, in molybdenum, which is also body-centered cubic, experimental X-ray evidence indicating a similar cleavage plane still seems lacking. Tsien and Chow" observed microscopically in the extension at around 1000°C of molybdenum single crystalline wires 0.25 mm in diam that the fracture plane seemed to be parallel to the operative slip plane, which appeared to be (110) at that temperature. Zapffe' pointed out from fractographic study of polycrystalline molybdenum that "although the transgranular pattern is characteristically non-crystallographic, patterns occasionally reveal {100} cleavage." This has been generally assumed to be the case at ordinary temperatures. In the present experiments, a single crystal of Fansteel molybdenum, Vs in. diam x 2 in. long, prepared by the methods described by Chen, Maddin, and Pond" was fractured at room temperature by bending. The fracture surface appeared to be quite similar to the cleavage surface of zinc and was crys-tallographic. A back-reflection Laue photogram was made using 35 kv copper white radiation; the X-ray

The placer gold occurrences at Sart Çayl, Manisa, Turkey, the legendary River Pactolus of King Croessus, were evaluated in this study to determine if this deposit contains sufficient recoverable value to justify development and exploitation. The gold occurs both in the upper Neogene conglomerates and the alluvium derived from these conglomerates. The total reserve in the whole region is estimated to be 500 million cubic metres. Samples were taken of the upper conglomerate and in the alluvium in an attempt to determine the amount and the physical nature of the gold. The gold in samples was recovered by screening out barren oversize followed by washing the sand and gravel through riffled sluices. The resulting sluice concentrate was later panned and amalgamated at site. Laboratory cyanidation testing of some samples for control purposes was also done. The average calculated free gold was found to be about 90-100mg/m3 and the size of gold flakes found was quite small. The field as well as laboratory testing of the samples of Sart Çay1 indicated that the potential reserves in this region could only be developed as a sand and gravel operation and the gold could be recovered together with the heavy minerals as a byproduct.

WHEN a liquid alloy freezes, the solid first formed usually differs widely in chemical composition from that last formed, so that there is segregation in the alloy as cast. For example in the copper-nickel system (fig. 1) the first solid formed from a liquid containing 55 atomic pct Cu may contain as little as 38 pct Cu, while the last must contain well over 55 pct. Three factors may act to decrease segregation from the maximum possible. 1. Diffusion in the cooling solid tends to make the phase homogeneous, decreasing segregation. This may be important at slow rates of cooling. 2. Segregation is impossible without diffusion in the liquid. At extremely rapid rates of cooling there may not be enough time to allow maximum segregation. 3. Supercooling delays nucleation to temperatures well below the liquidus thereby decreasing segregation. Hence the first nucleus in the copper-nickel system may contain well over 38 pct Cu. At sufficient supercooling the first nucleus may form below the solidus, in which case there is no reason to expect any segregation whatever. From these considerations, we could predict that at sufficiently low rates of cooling the alloy would be unsegregated because of factor 1 and at sufficiently high rates of cooling there should also be no segregation because of factors 2 and 3. Considerable segregation should occur only at intermediate rates of cooling. We have demonstrated experimentally that segregation can be completely suppressed by rapid rates of cooling. For the alloys studied, however, these rates are too great to be attained in any commercial practice. An alloy of 55 atomic pct Cu, 45 atomic pct Ni was frozen by cooling at varying rates. The degree of segregation in the solid was determined by X-ray diffraction photographs. Slow rates were obtained by slowly cooling the furnace containing the liquid alloy; fast rates by pouring or ejecting droplets of the alloy into water or iced sodium hydroxide solutions. The cooling rate of the droplets can be cal-culated from their dimensions by assuming reason- able values of thermal conductivity.' The experi-ments were repeated with an alloy of 16.5 pct Cu and 83.5 pct Au. A single experiment also showed a 50 atomic pct Bi-Sb alloy had no segregation at the most rapid quench. The position of back-reflection X-ray diffraction lines is a highly sensitive function of the lattice constant, which in turn depends on the chemical composition of the phase. A phase of varying composition will give broad diffraction lines. By measuring the edges of these lines and making suitable corrections for intrinsic line width, it is possible to determine the range of lattice constants represented. These can be converted to chemical compositions from a lattice constant vs. composition curve. Results are shown in table I. In the copper-nickel system the greatest segregation is found at the slowest cooling rates, where the lowest percentage of copper theoretically possible is found. In the copper-gold system, on the other hand, the degree of segregation is decidedly less at the slowest rates of cooling, being greatest at 11,100°C per sec. At no rate is the theoretically lowest percentage of copper (12 pct) found. At the rates of cooling found in sand and die castings the degree of segregation is large and depends little on the rate of cooling. An oxidative alkaline pressure leach is shown to increase the magnetic susceptibility of coal-pyrite particles. The leach was successfully exploited as a pretreatment in the magnetic desulfurization of an eastern Canadian coal. Greater than 50% total sulfur (65% pyritic sulfur) rejection at 85% clean coal yield was achieved using a high-gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) at 1.3 T and 53 mm/s (2 in. per sec) flow rate, after pretreatment at 0.5 mot NaOH, 85ºC (185ºF), 930 kPa (135 psi) air pressure, 15 minutes retention time, and 20% solids by weight (w/w). Without pretreatment, sulfur rejection at these HGMS settings was less than 5%.

IN the course of an investigation directed toward expanding ground-water facilities in Essex and Morris counties, New Jersey, the Board of Water Commissioners of the city of East Orange authorized a seismic-refraction survey' for the purpose of de-lineating bedrock topography below unconsolidated overburden. Results of the survey were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a comparatively detailed bedrock contour map. Knowledge of the bedrock depth and configuration was an important aid in selection of sites for test drilling. The portion of the East Orange Water Reserve under consideration is in the flood plain of the Pas-saic River about 10 miles west of Newark, N. J. The flood plain is about 175 ft above mean sea level and is bordered by low hills rising to elevations of approximately 250 ft. The bedrock underlying the Water Reserve consists of sandstone and shale of the Triassic Brunswick formation and is covered everywhere by deposits of unconsolidated glacial outwash sand and gravel, lacustrine clay, and recent river silt as much as 150 ft thick. Yield of wells in the sandstone and shale averages 100 to 200 gpm. Since production wells constructed in the sand and gravel aquifer in the buried river valley shown on the contour map (Fig. 1) yield 300 to 1400 gpm, it was proposed to locate additional production wells in this buried valley, where the yields per well would be maximum. In 1939 and 1946 the East Orange Water Dept. had electrical-resistivity surveys made to determine depths to bedrock. From the resistivity data the exploration company prepared a bedrock contour map. A well field expansion program begun in 1955 utilized this information to locate sites for test wells along a predicted northward extension of the buried valley in which existing production wells are located. After several test wells (wells 201-205) had been drilled, it became apparent that the resistivity information was unreliable." For example, test well 201 recorded bedrock at a depth of 72 ft, whereas the resistivity depth determination was 130 ft. As a consequence, the test drilling program was temporarily suspended and a seismic survey was under- taken to determine the topography and extent of the buried valley known from well records to underlie the existing well field. In the first phase of this study, several seismic shot point locations were placed at sites where well logs had been obtained previously. This procedure is necessary in a new area to determine whether the seismic method is applicable and what degree of accuracy is to be expected. At the East Orange Water Reserve, depths obtained from the shot points near test wells 202, 203, and 204 were within 8 to 11 pct of the depths logged (Table I). With this assurance that accurate results could be obtained, additional seismic spreads were located on the Water Reserve. Using a portable refraction seismograph, in the fall of 1955 a crew of four men shot a total of 29 reversed seismic spreads in a period equivalent to six field days. Charges as heavy as 3 1b of 40 pct dynamite were necessary at a few places to overcome ground vibrations caused by traffic on nearby highways. At most other sites, a 1-1b charge was sufficient. Travel-time plots were made for all spreads, and depths and true velocities were calculated according to formulas for multiple sloping layers by Ewing, Woollard, and Vine.' The plot of spread 7 (Fig. 2) is typical of the short spreads in which bedrock was shallow—about 50 ft in this case. Where there were not enough arrivals through the bedrock to define the high velocity bedrock line, the spreads were lengthened. This was done by placing shots on line several hundred feet away from each end of the line of geophones. It was then possible to construct complete reverse plots for both short and extended shot points (see spread 27, Fig. 3). Four individual depths were calculated from each extended spread. Three and in some cases four seismic layers were observed. The surficial layer had a velocity range of 900 to 1200 fps, the lowest velocity recorded. This seismic layer is above the water table and is interpreted as recent river silt. The bedrock had the highest velocities, which ranged from 10,600 to 16,400 fps. It is interesting to note that an attempt has been made to rationalize the effect of prestrain on the strength of Hastelloy X-280 after various aging treatments. However, two points raised by the authors seem to be somewhat unclear. 1) Concerning their Fig. l(a), the authors state: "Extensive dislocation networks are still in evidence. The 24-hr aging at 1500°F and the 15-min soak at 1350°F did not eliminate the dislocations introduced by the 20 pct cold reduction." This is, of course, to be expected since complete "elimination" of dislocations would require recrystallization which does not occur at 1500°F in Hastelloy X. However, recovery

A continuous on-line particle-size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 µ) to 20 w are discussed in detail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from both a practical and a theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

THE 142D MEETING of the Institute is rapidly shaping up with splendid prospects of a strong technical program and the lighter side of this annual occasion amply provided for. The date is February 20 to 23. The technical sessions will be held in the Engineering Societies building; the smoker-dinner, the informal dance, and the annual reception and dinner, at the Commodore Hotel, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. The news to date on the technical side is as follows: Mining Methods-Subsidence The Mining Methods Committee has prepared an interesting program which will be divided into two sessions to be held early in the week. At the first there will be papers on mining methods and development, including a description of the "Sinking and Equipment of No. 2 Shaft at Minas de Matahambre," by Dudley D. Homer and R. H. Cromwell. They describe in considerable detail the equipment used and the practice followed in sinking this important shaft, giving detailed costs and performance figures. Hoist¬ing ?arrangements and mining practice at the "Red Ore Mines of the Woodward Iron Co. at Bessemer, Ala.," are described by Tenny C. DeSollar, superintendent of mines, in a second paper. At this session of the Mining Methods Committee, H. M. Roche and R. E. Crockett, of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite Mining and Milling Methods, will present their paper, "Iron Ore Mining at the Scrub Oak Mine." This mine is in the highlands of New Jersey about 40 miles west of New York City. Prof. Robert K. Warner of Yale University will present a paper on "The Selection of a Mining System," which should have an interesting discussion. Pierre R. Hines, of Portland, Ore., will present, with stereopticon slides, his paper on "The Owyhee Tunnels, U. S. Reclamation Project, Owyhee, Oregon," describing one of the recent irrigation undertakings.

The gross production on the Island of Sahreirl during 1944 was approximately 6,700,000 U. S. bbl. No additional wells were drilled in the field during the year, but a number that were plugged off during the critical days of the war were brought back on production. This work is continuing. The construction of the extension of the refining plant was continued during the year and the new crude still was started in November. In Arabia, the production for the year 1940 was 5,074,838 U. S. bbl. Four wells were completed in Dammam field and all were commercial producers. Production for 1941 was 4,310,110 U. S. bbl. Seven more commercial producing wells were completed in Dammam field, and Well No. I at Abqaiq was complcted at 6180 ft. and was also a commercial producer. In 1942 production was 4,530,492 U. S. bbl. Abqaiq No. 2 was drilled to 5785 ft. but was left standing because of mechanical difficulty. The 1943 production was 4,868,- 184 with one well drilled, Abqaiq No. 3 completed at 6488 ft. and a commercial producer. Total production in Arabia for the year 1944 was around 7,800,000 U. S. bbl. and at the close of the year was running at approximately 40,000 bbl. per day. The small refinery, built in 1939, at Ras Tanura was in operation in the fall and a new refinery is being constructed. Only three wells were completed during the year—the El Jauf well in Northern Arabia (completed at 10,974 ft.) which did not bring in commercial production and Wells No. 4 (completed at 6270 ft.) and No. 5 at Abqaiq (completed at 6751 ft.), which were brought in as substantial commercial producers. Production for the year was entirely from the Dammam field. In this field, some of the wells that had been plugged off early in the war were brought back in production and this work is continuing. At the close of the year, one well was drilling in the Abqaiq field and an additional well was drilling at Qatif, the latter being a wildcat. Neither of the wells in question had reached producing horizons on the first of January.

FOR the development of a mine, a shaft of small cross-section is usually sunk, of no larger size than is absolutely necessary. After the mine has been developed and put on a production basis it is a common practice to sink a shaft of larger cross-section for hoisting and use the original shaft for the handling of men and material into the mine. While that ar¬rangement is usually expedient, the small size of the supply cages presents a problem in the handling of ma¬terial. Where a cage is, say, 4 by 4 ft., which is not an uncommon size, all lengthy and bulky material must be handled piece by piece several times from the supply department to the underground stations. Thus drill steel and timbers over 4 ft. long will be loaded on cars at the supply department and wheeled to the shaft, where each piece must be unloaded from the cars and stood up in the cage. They are then lowered to the shaft station, unloaded piece by piece and placed in cars, run to the supply station and again unloaded and stored until called for. In such a case handling becomes a major item in the cost of supplies.
