In 1989 natural industrial diamonds counted for 55% of the world's natural diamond production. Australia is currently the leading producer (35%). Zaire is the second largest producer (19%). of what is primarily industrial grade rather than gem grade. Botswana (17%) is third, with the former USSR (15%) fourth, and the Republic of South Africa (8%) fifth. Diamonds are also mined in Angola, Namibia, the Ivory Coast, the Central African Republic, Ghana, Tanzania, Guinea, and other African countries. In the Western Hemisphere, Brazil is the principal producer, with some production from Venezuela and Guyana [(Fig. 1)]. A very small output of diamonds is mined today in India, which was the first source of commercial production. In the United States, efforts at commercial diamond mining have been confined to a small area near Murfreesboro, AR. The first diamond was found in a pipe there in 1906. Small scale trial mining has not, however, proved economical. Since diamonds were first discovered more than 2,000 years ago, only about 380 t have been mined. In order to obtain 1 g (5 metric carats) of diamonds, it is necessary to remove and process approximately 25 t of rock. Recovering this small percentage involves a combination of highly developed techniques in mining and extremely sophisticated processes in diamond recovery. END USES Diamonds are used for two unrelated end uses: gem diamonds are jewels of great beauty, while industrial diamonds are essential materials of modem industry. Although imitation stones are substituted for the gem diamond, none of these matches its properties sufficiently well to offer real competition. Synthetic industrial diamonds are now of a quality and size that permit them to be substituted for natural diamonds in numerous industrial applications. For example, synthetic diamonds are available today in sizes up to 100 stones per carat (1.2 to 1.4 mm). In addition, polycrystalline synthetic diamond inserts, such as De Beers Syndite", General Electric's Compaxa and Stratapax", and Megadiamond's Megapax" have replaced natural diamonds in turning tools, mining and oil drilling bits, and dressing tool applications. Industrial Diamonds The diamond is by far the most important industrial abrasive. As recently as 50 years ago, consumption of industrial diamonds was less than that of gem diamonds, but since that time, industrial use has grown to a position of great dominance. During the six-year period 1929 to 1934, the material produced for industrial use amounted to about 74% by weight of the world's total output of diamonds. In 1989 the percentage of natural industrial diamonds mined in the world was 55%. When synthetic industrial diamonds are added to the natural industrial diamond figures, this percentage becomes 87% of total world diamond production including gems, near gems, industrial, and synthetic stones. The many uses responsible for these significant increases are dependent on the properties of the diamond, including hardness, cleavage, and parting, optical characteristics, presence of sharp points and edges, and capacity for taking and maintaining a high polish. The utilitarian role of the diamond was confined primarily to lapidary products until the industrial revolution, which created the first demand for diamond as an industrial tool. In 1777, a British inventor and instrument maker, Jesse Ramsden, used a diamond to cut a precision screw for an engine that he had invented. The first authentic description of industrial diamonds being set in a saw was recorded in 1854 by a Frenchman, Durnain. Eight years later a Swiss watchmaker, Jean Leschot, developed the first diamond drill bit for use in a hand operated machine, which was employed to drill blastholes in rock. In 1864, diamond bits were put to their severest test up to that time in the construction of the Mont Cenis Tunnel in the Alps. A few years later a steam-powered diamond drill with a speed of 30 rpm was able to penetrate rock at the modest rate of 0.3 m/hr. As the industrial revolution gained momentum on both sides of the Atlantic, metal replaced wood and machines replaced people. Thus the foundation was laid for precision engineering and the recognition of diamonds as an indispensable tool of industry. The next major demand for industrial diamonds came after World War I with the development of cemented carbide cutting tools. Diamond was found to be the most effective medium for finishing and grinding the new ultrahard metal. This discovery rapidly increased the demand for industrial diamonds. The availability of inexpensive diamond material inspired tremendous research into applications. By 1935, the first successful phenol-resin grinding wheel containing diamond had been marketed. Soon afterward, the metal-bonded and vitrified diamond wheels were produced, and, as the matrices and bonds that held the diamond grit in place began to improve, the popularity of diamond grinding wheels grew. The outbreak of World War II, and the accompanying increase in use of hard-metal tools in the munitions industry, increased the demand for industrial diamonds. Since about 1950, the development of ultrahard ceramics, semi- conductor materials, plastics, and exotic metal alloys has further consolidated the diamond's position as an indispensable tool of industry. Only diamond is hard enough to cut these superhard materials with the precision, speed, and economy that industry demands today. Special machines equipped with industrial diamonds are used to remove bumps from concrete runways and highways and to modify highway surfaces in order to prevent skid accidents. Many skids are caused by hydroplaning, a phenomenon that occurs when the roadway is wet. Tires mount a film of water and virtually lose contact with the road surface. Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% SiO2, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H,O. However, as a commercial commodity less than half of all talc sold has a purity exceeding 95%. Nevertheless, impure talc products find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are chlorite, dolomite, mica, magnesite, and tremolite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical term applied to pure talc. Today steatite usually denotes a high-talc ceramic body used as an electrical insulator, and the talc used in such applications is known as steatitic talc. Steatitic talc generally is found in massive, high- purity form and in the past was machined directly into electrical parts, which rarely is done today. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly termed soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soap- stone and talc this is natural, since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as slip) have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there are mineralogical relationships between pyrophyllite and montmorillonite and between talc and hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Native Americans on Santa Catalina Island, CA. In the mid- 1800s soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains was used by white settlers as building and ornamental stone and for the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon., 1956). Previous to 1916 the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 1.8 kt. From 1912 to 1918, however, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 8.2 to 18.2 kt. There was another increase in the mid-1930s, when the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California the production of talc grew to 57.2 kt in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California's production to grow to 108.9 kt in 1951. Production stood at 149.8 kt in 1968, 13 1.6 kt in 1969, 167.9 kt in 1970, and 140.7 kt in 1972. In the mid-seventies and early eighties, however, California's talc production declined to approximately 20 kt in 1992 due to reserves exhaustion and the material's tremolite content, which raised significant product liability concerns at the time. Talc mining in New York State dates from about 1878, when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville. In 1893 this operation was sold to International Pulp Co., which changed its name to International Talc Co. in 1944. The company was acquired by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc., in 1974. A new talc operation, Gouverneur Talc Co., owned by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, NY, in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 180 tpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to more than 725 tpd. Talc was discovered in the area of Johnson, VT, in 1902, marking the birth of the Vermont talc industry. American Minerals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. MagnesiaTalc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, VT, in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963, Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine had a long history as a producer of talc crayons. Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by the merger of Eastern Talc Co. and Magnesia Talc Co. In 1956 Vermont Mineral Co., with a talc mine at Hammondsville, VT, was also acquired. A new plant was then built at Gassetts to produce roofing products. In order to produce high grade products for several markets, Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. began operating a modem froth flotation plant at West Windsor, VT, in 1964. The ore was provided by the Hammondsville mine. This operation, known as Windsor Minerals, Inc., continued from 1972 to 1989 as a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson Co. In 1989 Cyprus Minerals Co. acquired Vermont Talc, Inc. and Windsor Minerals, Inc.. thus consolidating the talc mining and processing operations at Hamm, Windham, Johnson, Chester, Ludlow, West Windsor, Troy, and Reading, VT, under one ownership. As the result of Cyprus' sale of its worldwide talc assets to the RTZ Group in 1992, its US talc operations are now part of Luzenac America, Inc.

INTRODUCTION Ambient concentrations of radon and its daughter products have been measured and analyzed by a number of investigators for a variety of purposes. Principal among these purposes have been: (1) descriptive, to characterize the distribution and changes in concentrations under various conditions; (2) research in the use of radon as a tracer gas in the study of atmospheric characteristics and motions, such as eddy mass transfer, diffusivity profiles, large scale circulations, and the like; and (3) the use of radon as an atmospheric tracer in exploration for uranium deposits.* This information forms the basic data for this paper and for its placing the ambient natural, or non-anthropogenic, radon concentrations into the perspective of ambient radon health standards and lung cancer risk calculations. To enable better understanding of some aspects of the ambient radon data, review and analysis is also performed on selected measurements of radon emanation or flux from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere. These measurements have generally been made for purposes similar to those for ambient radon, i.e., (1) description of radon emanation characteristics; or (2) to support and justify the use of ambient concentration measurements in atmospheric research; or (3) in exploration for uranium. Interest is also developing in the use of such measurements for earthquake prediction. In addition, to complete the perspective, brief examination is given to anthropogenic ambient and flux radon measurements related to the mining and milling of uranium, so that comparison can he made with the values from natural sources. As a frame of reference we cite here previous summaries of studies which have presented representative values and ranges of ambient concentrations and emanation rates. H. Israel, in the Compendium of Meterorology (1951), cites eight studies of ambient radon concentrations which we have selected as representative of non-anomalous continental values. Their means generally range from [0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1 with the smallest reported minimum of zero and the largest maximum 0.53 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.10 with a standard deviation of 0.03 pCi lit-1. Means over oceans are much smaller, and the data scarcer, with only three values ranging from 0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1 and a mean of 0.0016 pCi lit-1.] Thirteen studies from Israel's list were selected as representative of mountainous terrain. These data, except for the cases of higher elevations, frequently show significantly higher values than the average cases in non-mountainous terrain described-above. The averages range from 0.10 to 0.59 pCi lit-l; the smallest minimum is zero and the largest maximum is 9.2 pCi lit-1. The overall mean is 0.30 with a standard deviation of 0.17 pCi lit-1. Israel also cites five studies of radon emanation (flux) from the earth's surface. These show a mean of 0.40 pCi-2m-2 sec-1 and a range of from 0.21 to 0.74 pCi m-2 sec-1. Data on flux are naturally scarcer in the literature than data on ambient concentrations, because of the greater interest in and utility of the ambient information. In this paper we also give special consideration to observations of the variability in time and space of radon flux rates, and to the impact of these phenomena on the use of such data for a variety of purposes. NATURAL(NON-ANTHROPOGENIC)AMBIENT RADON CONCENTRATIONS We have examined the following reports for the data selected for this category; these studies were generally intended to describe radon characteristics in the atmosphere. Jonassen and Wilkening (1970); Bradley and Pearson (1970); Wilkening (1970); Lambert, et al (1970); Pearson and Moses (1966); and DickPeddie, et al (1974). Another set of studies which was reviewed was selected because the investigators made ambient radon measurements in the course of examining the use of radon as a tracer in atmospheric research. This set consists of: Israel and Horbert (1970); Carlson and Prospero (1972); Subramanian, et al (1977); Larson (1978); Cohen, et al (1972); Hosler (1966); and Shaffer and Cohen (1972). Finally, unpublished data from uranium exploration activities (Milly and Thayer, 1976) was analyzed. [Treating the ocean cases first, the mean values are generally consistent with those quoted earlier from Israel (0.0004 to 0.003 pCi lit-1); they range from 0.001 to 0.011 pCi lit-1, with 0.003 the most frequently reported value. Continental values, from eight studies, range in means from 0.07 to 0.41 pCi lit-1 (not including mineralized areas, or "uranium country", discussed later), with maxima as high as 2.4 pCi lit -l. For comparison, the means from Israel are 0.06 to 0.15 pCi lit-1, with a maximum of 0.53 pCi lit-1. Introduction This chapter contains brief discussions of various environmental protection requirements that relate to underground mining operations. Environmental disturbances at an underground mining operation can result from subsidence; water discharges; waste dumps; construction and operation of access roads and utility lines; construction and operation of surface facilities such as maintenance shops, bathhouses, and storage yards; and emanation of dust and noise from surface crushers. Construction and operation of a concentrator or washing plant may result in the emission of air pollutants, the discharge of water pollutants, the creation of noise, and disturbance of the surface. Tailings ponds can be the source of fugitive dust.1 This chapter is not intended to provide a detailed discussion and analysis of laws and regulations dealing with environmental protection. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with a basic awareness of the existence and nature of such laws and regulations, as well as the procedural requirements that must be followed in complying with them. The body of law relating to environmental protection has grow" very rapidly and should continue to do to for some time. Because many of the laws have been enacted recently, numerous court decisions are being rendered to resolve disputes over their interpretation. Hence, the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes and regulations, and new case law. Rules and regulations pertaining to environmental protection are implemented at all governmental levels. The most widely known laws are those enacted by the federal government that have nationwide applicability. However, separate requirements exist in each state, county, and municipality. Because of their general applicability, federal laws are discussed most extensively in this chapter. Ownership of the property is the most significant factor considered in ascertaining what rules govern the conduct of an operation thereon. If the land is held under lease, reference to the lease terms must be made in the first instance to determine what obligations must be met in order to prevent default and possible loss of the property. If the land is held under a lease from the federal government, the operator is subject not only to compliance with the lease terms, but also to a large body of laws and administrative regulations that pertain generally to the conduct of mining operations on land held under federal leases. Although operations on unpatented mining claims, the legal title to which remains in the federal government, are not subject to the same rules and regulations that are applicable to operations conducted pursuant to federal leases or permits, they soon will be governed by a special set of regulations that provide for protection of surface resource.2 Operations conducted on lands leased from a state usually are subject to numerous environmental protection requirements specified in the lease terms, in addition to rules and regulations promulgated by the state agency having jurisdiction over mining on state lands. Operations conducted on privately held lands are subject to fewer such requirements. Leases from private parties sometimes have environmental protection and reclamation requirements written into them, but generally to a far lesser extent than governmental leases. Operations conducted on properties owned by the operator are subject only to those laws and regulations that have general applicability without regard to land ownership. COAL SURFACE MINING CONTROL AND RECLAMATION ACT OF 1977 Introduction On Aug. 3, 1977, the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was signed into law.3 It governs coal-mine operations on private lands, as well as on public lands. The Act is pervasive in its scope and is extremely long and complex. The basic purpose of the Act is to control and minimize the environmental effects of surface coal mining. Surface coal-mining operations are defined as activities conducted on the surface of lands in connection with a surface coal mine and surface impacts incident to an underground coal mine.4 The Act is administered by the Secretary of the Interior through a new agency named the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.5 The Act contains detailed environmental protection standards and reclamation requirements, and it establishes a permit system for all surface coal-mining operations. Mining in certain areas and under ceri-in conditions is restricted or prohibited, and a mechanism for enforcement by the states is provided. Stiff penalties are provided in the event of noncompliance. Implementation Schedule Nonfederal Lands: As required by Section 501 of the Act, interim regulations setting mining and reclamation performance standards based on and incorporating standards set out in Section 502(c) were adopted effective Dec. 13, 1977.6 They will. be incorporated as amendments to Chapter VII of Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations. Permanent regulatory procedures for surface coal-mining and reclamation operations performance standards, which were directed to be promulgated by Aug. 3, 1978, were published in proposed form on Sept. 10, 1978. 7 They govern surface coal-mining operations in any state until a permanent state or federal program is adopted. As of Feb. 3, 1978, all new operations, and as of May 3, 1978, all existing surface coal-mining operations, on lands on which such operations are regulated by a

The latest estimates compiled by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists again indicate a moderate increase in mining geophysical activity in 1980 over the 1979 level. While North American activity remained at above the 1979 level, a considerable increase in mining geophysics was reported in South America, Australia, and the Far East. The total worldwide expenditures for mining geophysics were reported to be $53.7 million in 1980, compared to $44.4 million in 1979, and $31.6 million in 1978. During 1980, approximately 2% of all dollars spent on geophysics were attributed to mining geophysical activities; this percentage has remained relatively constant in recent years. Airborne surveys accounted for 51% of the total worldwide mining geophysical expenditure, 43% was spent for land surveys, and 6% for borehole surveys. Within the US, the breakdown of expenditures for land surveys was 60% for elec¬trical methods, 23% for gravity and magnetic methods, and 17% for seismic techniques. Electrical techniques remain the primary exploration tool for US mining geophysicists. Electrical Methods With inductive or electromagnetic (EM) techniques, significant developments were achieved in both frequency-domain and time-domain systems. Work continued on increasing the signal level on most time-domain (TEM) methods, to increase the exploration depth. The Crone group increased the power of its Pulse ElectroMagnetic system (PEM) to a 20-amp transmitter-loop capability. The GEOEX group is modifying the SIROTEM II system to obtain larger transmitter amperage from a portable motor generator. Geonics developed a new digital recording system (data logger) for its EM-37 system. This development should increase the productivity of EM-37 crews. A new ground, frequency-domain EM system was developed by the Scintrex group. This novel Genie system does not require a wire link between the receiver and transmitter. Because an amplitude-ratio is measured, the Genie data are reported to be relatively insensitive to coil orientation and distance errors. This new technique does not need extensive line-cutting or accurate station-chaining and would appear to be a good reconnaissance instrument. Scintrex also began marketing the new IPR-11 induced polarization spectral receiver. This receiver is microprocessor controlled, and can output to a cassette tape and record 10 windows of secondary voltage decay simultaneously from up to six receiver dipoles. The Phoenix group's new 100 kW induced polarization/resistivity (IP/R) transmitter began tests using their IPV-3 multifrequency, multichannel receiver. While this unit was primarily developed for "oilfield" IP exploration research, it has obvious application to "deep" mineral exploration. The Phoenix group also developed a new remote-reference, real-time magneto-telluric (MT) device in 1981. This five-component MT sys¬tem has a frequency range from 0.0005-384 Hz. Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) developments also continued in 1981. The mining in¬dustry increased its use of the new Geonics EM-33-3 multifrequency, multicoil instrument. In 1981, the Dighem group developed software for estimating magnetite as a mapping parameter from its HEM system. Dighem's work is said to complement airborne magnetic intensity surveys, since the HEM estimate is independent of remanent magnetism and magnetic latitude effects. Gravity and Magnetic Methods Probably one of the most innovative techniques in geophysics in 1981 was the use of airborne gravity surveys for both mining and petroleum exploration. The Carson group is using a modified, shipborne LaCoste-Romberg platform in helicopters. Data accuracies to 0.5 milligal have been achieved by flying gridded surveys. Although this airborne method is expensive-up to $186/ km ($300/line-mile)-the geophysical community has been excited by initial results. On the ground, the portable proton-precession magnetometers are becoming sophisticated. Both GeoMetrics and EDA recently introduced field magnetometers having data storage and processing capabilities. This development should greatly increase the productivity of ground-magnetic surveys. Seismic Methods Development of high-resolution seismic techniques continued in 1981. These techniques have primarily been directed toward coal studies for fault detection. OYO Instruments introduced their McSEIS-1500 seismic data acquisition system in 1981. This device contains a 24-channel recording capability, with digital output to 256-kbyte floppy disks. The high-speed data transfer using the disk media is considered a desirable feature. Borehole Methods The general decrease in uranium exploration, where borehole logging is extensively used, probbly led to the overall decline of geophysical logging activity in the minerals industry. However, a number of new sondes and logging systems were introduced in 1981: • Mount Sopris recently introduced their Series III logging system. This microprocessor-controlled unit records up to four channels of data on nine-track or cassette magnetic tape. The logging package is relatively light-weight, so helicopter transport to mountainous or roadless exploration sites is possible. (Both the Edcon and Woodware-Clyde consulting groups offer "slinging" capabilities for their Mount Sopris units.) Mount Sopris is continuing work on their 500-mm-diam (2¬in-diam) spectral gamma-ray sonde. This tool is expected to be available soon. • Owl Technical "slim-downed" its successful digital deviation probe to 380-mm (1.5-in) outside diameter. This new sonde will also measure inclinations up to 80° from the vertical, as compared with its older instrument that could measure inclinations to 30°. • A magnetic susceptibility sonde was introduced in the US by the OYO Instruments group. This Kappalog sonde contains two aircored coils for measurements slightly affected by thermal changes within the borehole. Stone, one of the oldest building materials, today remains a well-established material throughout the construction industry. The use of natural stone is much less prevalent now than in the past. It is still widely considered to be the most aesthetically pleasing, prestigious, and durable building material. New and re-opened quarries are coming onstream to meet increased demand related to new building technology and increased residential use of stone. CLASSIFICATION No classification can completely eliminate overlap between dimension stone, aggregate, and decorative stone because most stone is multi-purpose. Many used for decorative purposes are not produced specifically for that end use. Rock otherwise considered waste in dimension stone or aggregate quarries can be decorative stone coproducts (Fig. 1). Many uses require a compromise between decorative and structural qualities (Bowles, 1992, written commu¬nication). Shipley (1945) used decorative stone interchangeably with or¬namental stone. Gary et al. (1972) defined decorative stone as that used for architectural decoration, such as mantels, columns, and store fronts, but added that it is sometimes set with silver or gold in jewelry as curio stones. Bates and Jackson (1987) also restricted decorative stone to that used for architectural decoration. Meanings of otherwise identical terms used in the stone industry differ be¬tween geologists, engineers, and quarriers. They often carry a much broader meaning for quarriers and engineers compared to their very specific use by geologists (Makens et al., 1972). Decorative stone, including ornamental stone, is more broadly defined by geologists as any stone used primarily for its color, texture, and general appearance. It is not used primarily for its strength or durability, such as construction stone, or in specific sizes, such as dimension stone. The decorative stone industry uses a much wider range of stone types compared to stone that is dimensioned. Decorative stone usually serves some structural pur¬pose, but is not load-bearing to any great extent. Weak or costly stones serve in decorative, not structural, applications. STATISTICS AND END USES Decorative and dimension stone data are difficult to separate because the US Bureau of Mines keeps statistics only on dimension stone and crushed stone. The value of domestic dimension stone production in 1990, which includes some decorative stone, was about $210 million compared to imports of about $524 million and exports of about $35 million. Production was 1 080 t of which at least one-third was for decorative uses (Taylor, 1992). The principal uses are rough blocks in building construction (23%) and monu¬ments (18%); the remainder is used as ashlar (18%), curbing (12%), and miscellaneous (29%). Major rock types are granite (50%), limestone (30%), sandstone (10%), slate (3%), marble (2%), and other (5%) (Harben, 1990). Crushed stone valued at $5.6 billion was produced in the United States in 1990 by 1700 companies operating 3400 active quarries in 48 states (Tepordei, 1991). About 52% is used in con¬struction, 9% in cement and lime manufacturing, 2% in agricul¬ture, 2% in industrial uses, and 35% for unspecified uses including decorative aggregate. Limestone and dolomite comprise about 71%, granite 14%, and traprock 8% of the stone crushed in the United States. The remaining 7% are, in descending quantity, sandstone, quartzite, miscellaneous rock, marble, shell, calcareous marl, volcanic cinder and scoria, and slate. The basic types of decorative stone are: rough stone, aggregate, cut or dressed stone, and manmade stone [(Table 1)]. Rough Stone Rough stone is used as it is found in nature with very limited processing such as minor hand shaping, edge fitting, and size or quality sorting (Perath, 1992, written communication). This stone type is often marketed locally in relatively small tonnages and includes fieldstone and flagstone. The primary end uses of rough stone are landscaping, edging, paving, or large individual stone landscape or interior accents [(Fig. 2)]. Fieldstone: Fieldstone is picked up or pried out of the ground (gleaned) without extensive quarrying and includes garden or large landscaping boulders (Austin et al., 1990, Hansen, 1969). Boulders and cobbles may be split or roughly trimmed for use in rubble walls and veneers, both interior and exterior. Popular fieldstone rock types include sandstone, basalt, limestone, gneiss, schist, quartzite, and granite, but many others are suitable. Much fieldstone is col¬lected by individuals or small companies because the industry is labor intensive and markets are small. The stone may be sold locally in small quantities from the back of vehicles (Austin et al., 1990). Fieldstone includes many rock types, sizes, and shapes with the only common denominator that it must be set by hand and be durable (Power, 1992, written communication). Moss Rock. Moss rock is fieldstone partially covered by algae, mosses, lichens, and fungi that give the rock an aged and variegated patina (Austin et al., 1990). The plants are supported by moisture and nutrients in the stone. Moss rock is used for landscaping, walls, and fireplaces. Although almost any durable rock can be a moss rock, most are slabby or rounded sandstone and limestone (Fig. 3). Introduction and Historical Background Although both sluices and devices using a simple flowing film are among the oldest known methods of concentration, they are still extensively employed in a variety of situations where they are not only efficient but also have a low operating cost. More particularly, they are valuable for making a bulk concentrate of high specific gravity minerals from alluvials and beach sand and in upgrading low value ores. The antiquity of some of the basic concepts can be seen in the fact that they are found in Agricola's De Re Metallica which was published at Basic in 1546, while in 1602, Carew114 gave a fairly clear account of tin ore dressing in Cornwall in which grass turves were used to catch the cassiterite. This is perhaps one of the forerun¬ners of the blanket strake. The planilla of Mexico, the lanchute of Malaysia and the old Cornish box huddle are also descended from these early strakes. In fact, a sluice with holes in the bottom for concentrate discharge was shown by Agricola, not unlike the principle used in the plane table and the lamflo sluice. The convex huddle for the treatment of sandy material appeared about 1848 and the concave form eight to ten years later. For the treatment of "slime" sizes, wooden dead frames which were manually worked were used in Cornwall for many years but gave way to the automatic water-operated type in 1860, and even a mechanically tilted frame was described by Henderson115 in 1857. Theoretical Considerations The behavior of solid particles in suspension depends to a great extent upon the pulp density and the size of the suspended particles. In a fairly dilute suspension, such as that normally used when dealing with small particle sizes, the behavior of particles in a flowing film results from two effects. These are the lateral displacement, which is determined by the time taken for each particle to penetrate the flowing film and reach the solid surface, and the resistance offered by each particle to further displacement after it has reached this surface. The initial penetration through the flowing film depends on the size and specific gravity of the particle and the thickness and viscosity of the film. As a result the smaller particles will migrate further before their movement is retarded relative to larger particles of the same specific gravity. The behavior on reaching the solid surface de¬pends on whether there is a single particle layer or, as is more often the case, a multiple layer or thin bed of material which is sufficiently dilated, permits the penetration of higher specific gravity grains. Thrust of Flowing Films. When a thin film of liquid flows over a plane solid surface, the layer next to the surface remains at rest but the velocity of the film increases with the distance from the surface and becomes a maximum near, but not quite at, the free surface. Therefore, a particle in suspension in such a film is acted upon by a greater force near the upper part of the film than at the lower part, resulting in an overturning effect. After a particle reaches the separating surface or an accumulated densely packed bed of other particles, the liquid flow causes it to move downstream by rolling, sliding, or by a movement involving alternating suspension and deposi¬tion (saltation). In rolling and sliding, which are brought about by a substantially noneddying stream, the large submerged particles are acted upon to the greatest extent and they move more rapidly than smaller ones, notwithstanding their greater mass. When two particles of the same size but of different specific gravity are considered, the higher density one moves more slowly by reason of its greater mass. As a result the particles tend to become arranged in the manner shown in Fig. 29. If any particle is so large as to stand above the water surface, the transporting force on such a particle, although the maximum available, will have less effect than that on a submerged one. Such large grains are therefore carried a lesser distance. Fluid Velocity in a Flowing Film It can be shown that if y is the distance within the flowing film from the interface, the fluid velocity v' at this point is given by IIn this equation p' is the fluid density, g the acceleration due to gravity, a the viscosity, a the angle made by the film to the horizontal, and 0 the film thickness (in cgs units). From these expressions it can be seen that the depth of the flowing film varies as the cube root of the volume of fluid and inversely as the cube root of the sine of the plane surface inclination. Similarly the distance a particle can travel before reaching the surface is directly related to the quantity of fluid and its viscosity. The viscosity of pulp is greatly increased by the presence of near colloidal particles and consequently the penetration of the somewhat larger grains through the flowing film is retarded, resulting in them being carried further across the concentrator deck. Obviously this effect can be reduced by prior removal of some or all of the ultra¬fine particles. The detrimental effect of kaolin on the separation of fine ferrosilicon from quartz has also been demonstrated by Johnston,116 the relationship between viscosity and efficiency of separation being shown in Fig. 30. The pH value also has a very marked influence on the viscosity and the use of acid mine water, for example, can increase viscosity materially and thereby result in lower efficiency. Dilation of Multi-Particle Systems Except during washing (when a single particle layer may exist) concentration usually takes place in a bed of particles which is partially dilated or stirred by eddy currents. INTRODUCTION The determination and use of mechanical properties of rock in engineering and rock mechanics are rapidly developing. Many of these properties are determined on intact rock specimens; thus, their application and repre¬sentation of rock mass properties may be limited. How¬ever, relative information often provides useful guidance in the solution to mine design and stability problems. Summarized in this chapter are some of the stan¬dardized techniques and procedures currently used to obtain these mechanical properties. Typical applications of the use of these properties are also presented. Stan¬dardized techniques include those advanced by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM), US Bureau of Mines (USBM), Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, South African Institute of Min¬ing and Metallurgy, and other individual investigators. Information on the mechanical properties of rock and the behavior of the rock under a given system of stresses represents a necessary part of the information for rational engineering design for any given mining op¬eration. The mining method, the type and extent of sup¬port, the extraction ratio, the overall dimensions of the mine, and the orientation of the rooms and pillars are all decisions that are influenced by the mechanical prop¬erties of the ore, roof, and floor material under various stress systems and the magnitude and direction of the in situ stresses (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972). Initial mechanical property information regarding a structure or mine property is generally obtained by two basic techniques: (1) static and dynamic property tests are conducted on intact and fractured rock specimens of exploratory drill core, and (2) dynamic properties are obtained by borehole logging techniques. When mining access becomes available, and as the mining horizon is expanded, additional information can be ob¬tained to verify preliminary mine design values. This chapter presents some of the standardized tech¬niques and equipment currently used in obtaining me¬chanical property data in the laboratory. The properties considered are: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (2) uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores containing planes of weakness, (3) triaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (4) triaxial compressive strength of cores with a plane of weakness, (5) Young's modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, (7) density or apparent specific gravity, (8) modulus of rupture, (9) indirect tensile strength, and (10) creep characteristics. Where possible, an at¬tempt will be made to evaluate each property measure¬ment in relation to the problems of rock mechanics and application of results. TEST SPECIMENS The selection and care of drill core for laboratory testing require some consideration. It is recognized that laboratory-determined properties are not necessarily rep¬resentative of an in situ rock mass property. However, relative information between beds or zones of interest is still valuable information in selecting mining horizons and preliminary design criteria. To provide statistical data the number of drill core samples selected to repre¬sent each of the areas of interest should be from a mini¬mum of three to a maximum of ten test specimens. A judgment must also be made on site as to whether the recovered drill core should be wrapped and sealed in plastic to preserve moisture. On the one hand investiga¬tions of air-dried and saturated specimens have shown that moisture significantly affects the elastic properties and strengths of many rock materials (Obert, Windes, and Duvall, 1946; Colback and Wiid, 1965); on the other hand it is apparent that most core drilling is done with water which may saturate the specimen to a greater extent than in the in-situ condition. Whether or not the decision is made to retain the moisture, the core should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after recovery for subsequent specimen preparation and testing. Specifications Shape: The shape of the specimens influences lab¬oratory testing in two ways: (1) time and cost of sam¬ple preparation and (2) strength of the material. Cy¬lindrical specimens of drill core are by far the least time-consuming to prepare for static or dynamic labora¬tory testing. In addition, the cylindrical shape lends it¬self to a more uniform stress distribution throughout the sample than other shapes, such as rectangles and hexa¬gons. The compressive strengths of various shapes have been studied (Grosvenor, 1963, and Price, 1960), and results indicate that the cylindrical specimens usually provide the highest strength for a given height-diameter ratio. However, reduction in strength from a cylindrical shape to a rectangular in situ pillar is not regarded as significant in relation to other considerations such as planes of weakness in a pillar or safety factors in the design process. Length-Diameter Ratio: The length-to-diameter ra¬tio, LID, has a significant effect on the compressive strength. Various recommendations have been made to use standard LID ratios ranging from 2 to 2.5 to 3 (ASTM, 1975c; ISRM, 1972). However, past work by others such as Obert, Windes, and Duvall (1946) has shown that excellent results can be obtained using LID ratios from 2 > (LID) > >/s. In selecting an LID ratio for testing, one should keep in mind the amount of material available for testing. In many instances, this may be limited. Thus, a shorter specimen such as 1: 1 LID may be necessary to provide enough test data for statistical analysis of results. Sec¬ond, it may be desirable to obtain elastic constants dur¬ing the test. This generally requires instrumentation such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or strain gages near the center of the specimen. INTRODUCTION Sublevel mining is a mass mining method based upon the utilization of gravity flow of the blasted ore and the caved overlying waste rock mass. As with any other mining method, sublevel caving has advantages and dis¬advantages which must be carefully considered and evaluated. The major advantages of sublevel caving are dis¬cussed as follows: Because all of the mining activities are executed in or from relatively small openings, sublevel caving is one of the safest mining methods. Drifts, which are the pri¬mary working places, are distributed in a uniform pat¬tern on all levels. Normally the maximum dimensions of the sublevel drifts are about 5 m wide and 3.7 m high. The transportation drifts can have the same section, or the height may be increased to about 4.5 m when trucks are loaded in the transport drifts. The stability and safety of such drifts in competent rock can be easily controlled by smooth blasting or by a combination of smooth blasting with shotcreting. In less competent rock masses, stability can be achieved by combined reinforc¬ing, for example, by a combination of smooth blasting, shotcreting, and rockbolting. The major mining activities can be broken down into three groups: drifting and reinforcing; ore fragmenta¬tion, i.e., production drilling and blasting; and ore draw¬ing, loading, and transportation, and all are relatively simple. Because of the repetitive nature of the mining system, one can standardize almost completely all min¬ing activities. This means that a high degree of work efficiency can be achieved. Because the components of mining production in sublevel caving can be standardized, a high degree of mechanization is possible. In modern sublevel caving the sections of drifts and tunnels are sufficiently large to allow the introduction of large trackless mining equip¬ment. The advantages of a trackless system can be then broadly utilized not only for direct mining but also for all services, including the transportation of mining per¬sonnel to the working place. The flexibility of mining is very good. Standardiza¬tion and specialization of mining activities and equip¬ment on separate levels (lower level or levels in de¬velopment, upper level or levels in production mining) together with the trackless system yield a high degree of flexibility. This allows a rapid start-up of mining and good flexibility in making production rate changes. The method lends itself to good work concentration, organization, and working conditions. Normally, on the lower levels, various phases of development are under¬way. Upper levels are in various stages of extraction. Therefore the work can be easily organized into a sys¬tem which excludes interference between mining activi¬ties. Safety of mining (in small dimension openings), good work organization, high mechanization using large modern mining equipment, etc., comprise very good working conditions. Naturally such a system enables a high work concentration and rationalization of separate specialized mining activities and therefore mining by sublevel caving can be effective and relatively in¬expensive. The major disadvantages of sublevel caving, on the other hand, are: There is a relatively high dilution of the ore by caved waste. Various types of ore loss can occur. When the ex¬traction limit (that point yielding the maximum accept¬able amount of dilution) is reached, the remaining highly diluted ore represents an ore loss. Some ore is lost in passive zones located on the level of extraction between the active zones of the gravity flow. Part of the ore from these passive zones can be recovered together with ore extraction on the lower sublevel, but some un¬diluted and often not fragmented ore located in passive zones above the plane of the footwall is lost. In gen¬eral, these losses are larger as the inclination of the ore body and the footwall is reduced. A relatively large amount of development is re¬quired. This includes transport drifts, usually located in the footwall waste rock on each sublevel, and sub¬level drifts, which connect the active mining areas to the transport drifts and as a result are partially in ore and partially in the waste rock of the footwall. The waste rock length increases as the inclination of the ore body and footwall decreases. It also includes orepasses, used for transport of the ore or waste from the separate sublevels downward to the main haulage level, and normally driven in waste; and inclined drifts or tunnels, which provide a connection for the trackless equipment between the main haulage level and the separate sublevels and are driven in waste. Finally there is the de¬struction of the surface through subsidence. To maximize the ore recovery, minimize the dilu¬tion, and achieve a high efficiency of mining by sub¬level caving, good data regarding the gravity flow pa¬rameters for the blasted ore and the caved waste are of utmost importance. The exact type and amount of data required depend upon the purpose and needs of the study. For the first feasibility study, it may be sufficient to utilize the data from other sublevel caving operations with similar conditions and circumstances. For any higher level of mine planning it is clear that more exact data, including analytical and experimental analyses up to full-scale in-situ testing, are necessary. Basic gravity flow principles and design guidelines for the application of the sublevel caving mining method are presented in the following sections. Although some¬what simplified, they should provide a basis for mine planning and operation. The gravity flow principles described can be effectively applied to other mining situations, with some modification. Also, steep dipping coal seams can be effectively mined by modified sub¬level caving.

Even though wet processes were used in coal preparation plants prior to 1941, dewatering coal was not a problem then because the finer sizes were uneconomical to recover and were considered waste. However, during the war years the scarcity of raw materials necessitated the utilization of every pound of natural resources and coal plants began seeking an economical mans of recovering fine coal. Early efforts to this end concentrated primarily on centrifugal dewatering devices. Such equipment produced good results but was relatively expensive. In 1944, a method was devised utilizing a vibrating screen fitted with a profile wire deck rather than the standard woven wire cloth deck. This machine came to be referred to as a dewaterizer. Results obtained with the dewaterizer approached those of the centrifugal equipment, but at a lower capital cost, Their use reduced either the number of centrifugal units required to follow the dewaterizers or the required energy input to heat dryers, In some cases they eliminated the need for any further dewatering equipment.

Traditionally, mine drainage systems have not received the high level of emphasis on careful engineering design which has been rendered to many of the other auxillary operations. This may be due, in part, to the situation-response approach toward dealing with an influx of water. When the installed system becomes inadequate, costly alterations to the pump, such as staging or speed increases, are considered expedient solutions. In order to rectify this situation, computer-aided solutions to mine drainage problems could represent an efficient alternative to the methods presently used. This paper will consider the application of microcomputer technology to mine drainage problems and will show how the relative economy and convenience of microcomputers can make them become valuable analytic tools at any mine site.

Conventional and advanced coal preparation technologies were investigated through both a literature search and through direct contact with investigators and developers. In addition to a brief description of each process, performance characteristics including feedstock type, ash and sulfur reduction, thermal energy recovery and cost are provided in a tabular form. Seven of the most commonly utilized conventional coal preparation processes, including those respectively accepting coarse, intermediate and fine coal feed, were reviewed. It was found that certain properly implemented and well maintained conventional processes were capable of better than 75 percent ash removal while recovering 90 percent or more of the inherent thermal energy. Almost 50 advanced coal preparation processes were investigated based on biological, chemical and physical principles. Physical processes investigated included cycloning, homogeneous heavy media, electrostatic, high gradient magnetic, flotation and selective coalescence. Using pulverized coal as a feedstock, some of these processes are respectively reported to be capable of removing better than 95 percent ash. 95 percent pyritic sulfur, and 50 percent organic sulfur while incurring energy losses of less than 5 percent.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 1960's, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines avail-able today have unit volumes in the range of 38.2 to 43.9 M3 (1,350 to 1,550 cft). Designs for mechanical flotation cells of unit volumes as large as 70.8 m3 (2500 cft) are available. The development of these "giant" flotation machines has been and continues to be motivated by the increasingly critical forces of higher energy and capital costs, decreasing ore grades, and lower (real) prices for the products. As an expansion of a previous publication, this paper reports the further development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the develop¬ment of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which s is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

Large diameter autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semi-autogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology which provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant it is to be installed in. This is particularly true in autogenous and semi-autogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only ?paper.? Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs and operating practices, and provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980's. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series because they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance.

Beginning in 1961 the Coal Research Bureau of the West Virginia University School of Mines began a program of research to investigate the potential of the magnetic separation process to remove sulfur of the pyritic form from pulverized coal. Using a so-called isodynamic magnetic separator (1) it was demonstrated that significant quantities of pyritic sulfur could be removed from coal. Pulverized coal samples representing several different coal seams were individually screened into sizes in the 48 mesh by 200 mesh (297 to 74 microns) range, and untreated and steam-air treated samples of each were processed by the magnetic separator. The results of the investigations to magnetically remove pyrite from coal were published in two separate reports issued by the Coal Research Bureau (2,3), The isodynamic magnetic separator was designed about 30 years ago for use in geological and mineralogical laboratories (1,4,5) to isolate one or more minerals exhibiting only small differences in their magnetic propertiese Specifically, to accomplish this, the air gap of the unit was designed to provide a nearly constant magnetic gradient both laterally and longitudinally in the separating zone. It is reported that mineral concentrates of 99.5 percent purity can-be produced on closely-sized fractions after several cleanings through the unit. The isodynamic magnetic separator, therefore, was not expected to process coal containing sizes smaller than 200 mesh, or to demonstrate commercial capability to process pulverized coal. The primary purpose of the Coal Research Bureau in using the unit was that of determining if the magnetic process could remove pyrite from coal, and thereby encourage further research directed toward development of acceptable full-scale processing equipment.

With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

According to Darcy?s law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

The object of this study was to evaluate the oxidized taconites of the western Mesabi iron range and to establish a correlation between the various basic taconite types and their concentratability. This study was made at the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota under the sponsorship of the Great Northern Railway Company. The initial work included a study of the original mineralogical and stratigraphic facies of the fresh taconite and traced the oxidation and leaching patterns developed during the conversion of this material to oxidized taconite. Subsequent studies have extended this work to include the semi- taconites and also the wash and heavy media ore types widely developed in the area. Each basic, original mineralogical facies or taconite type produces during alteration an equivalent secondary oxidized facies which has a unique mineralogical composition and texture. These control the concentratability of the oxidized taconites. Actually the influence of the original mineralogical composition of the iron formation extends even further and determines whether the most likely product of oxidation and leaching will be a wash ore or a heavy media ore and even to the direct shipping ores where the ratio of hematite to goethite is largely determined by the original taconite type.

The purposes of this presentation are: (1) to discuss the actual as well as potential incidents that have caused and that could cause groundwater contamination at uranium in situ leach mining sites and (2) to discuss remedial actions and solutions that have been or that could be implemented in the future to stop or prevent serious groundwater contamination from in situ leach mining in Wyoming?s Powder River Basin. Open pit, underground, and existing and proposed in situ leach uranium mine sites in the Powder River Basin are shown in Figure 1. In situ leach mining or solution mining for extracting minerals in liquid form is a relatively new addition to the list of conventional mining methods currently used to extract uranium in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. Basically, the in situ leach mining method involves: (1) the injection of a leach solution lixiviant (an acidic or basic oxidizing solution) into a uranium-bearing ore body, via injection wells, to complex the contained uranium, (2) mobilization of the uranium complex from the host material via creation of a soluble complex salt, and (3) surface recovery of the solution bearing the uranium complex via production wells. Uranium is then separated from the leach solution by conventional milling unit operations (ion exchange).
