This paper reviews the technical advice available to support companies in the delivery of social aspects of sustainable development. It will draw on diverse experience from the sparsely populated plains of the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the densely populated villages of the Carpathian Mountains in Slovakia. It will review basic requirements for the consideration of social issues, as well as guidance on international best practice. It will review: the legal basis; coverage; consideration of alternatives; scope; inclusive decision-making; indicator development; impact monitoring and evaluation. The paper will discuss the breadth and depth of social issues for consideration, including the realms of responsibility of a company in terms of social development in different operating environments. The extractive industries invest substantial amounts of money which typically dwarfs local development, health or education budgets. Capacity building for local authorities is not directly the role of the company, but when understood as a strategy for risk management, it can play a vital part of sustainable development that benefits the local community and reduces the risk of social problems impacting profits. The paper will argue that social impact assessment is most effective when the outcomes are in line with a company?s principles and support core business practices. It is important that social impact assessment is viewed as an integral part of project decision-making and moves away from mistrusted PR and unsustainable philanthropy toward partnership, which finds suitable and appropriate solutions delivering ?win-win? outcomes. While development should not be seen as a direct company objective, engaging with development actors to better understand the operating context can ensure that social investment complements existing initiatives. The paper will also present different mechanisms for engaging with local actors, as well as developing successful social programmes.

Knight Piésold and Co. hosted its annual roundtable discussion on March 17, 2011 at the Stockman Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The theme for Roundtable 2011 was, ?High density tailings, paste, and filtered tailings,? although the topic may well have been subtitled, ?Don?t prematurely rule out any technologies before they are given their day in court.? Bryan Ulrich, Knight Piésold?s local representative, as well as Tom Kerr from Knight Piésold?s office in Denver, CO, were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. Ulrich and Kerr are senior vice president and president of Knight Piésold?s U.S. practice, respectively. The event played host to more than 30 attendees from several western states. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties and various corporate offices. There were also attendees from manufacturing and specialist consulting firms who have been providing services to various high-density tailings, paste and filtered tailings operations worldwide. It may be noted that the term ?filtered tailings? is used in this discussion. Alternative terms, such as ?dry stack? or ?dewatered tailings,? should be avoided whenever possible, as such terms tend to give a false sense about the nature of the material since these materials typically still retain a significant amount of moisture.

At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. In this paper, the problems which occurred on introduction of dense medium cyclone coal washing in Australia are reviewed together with the subsequent measures taken to obtain a satisfactory magnetite. Specification and testing of magnetite for exploration, quality control and in-plant check purposes is discussed. The disposition of Australian magnetite deposits in relation to the main coal producing areas is examined, and comments are made on the economics of mining, milling and beneficiating magnetite for coal preparation uses alone. Future trends in the Australian Coal Industry are predicted, and the need for a planned approach for the future is demons traced.

The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political, and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). In other words, mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure, and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (The Importance Of Mining In Modern Society, 2024). The mining industry is closely linked to a country’s economy and activities related to natural resources. The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira & McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure, and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Importance Of Mining - Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, diversity, and inclusion brings us to an interesting topic: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge and requires collaborative efforts (Singh & Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This research proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive Mining for Sustainable Development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the Creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations, and advance toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, establishing the company as a global change agent.

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125±7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenization temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166°C to 144°C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132°C to 128'C. Homogenization and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than MVT ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in two open pits (A and B) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: 1) replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores, 2) goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite, and magnetite that are disseminated in the fluorite ores, 3) partial replacement by fluorite of a titaniferous magnetite rimmed carbonatite dike in the A pit, and 4) partial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the B pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite, and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97% to 10.46% Ti02, averages 8.44% Ti02, and has an average V203 content of 0.35%. At high magnifications under the SEM, the magnetite shows abundant fine ulvöspinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range 3.21 to 5.0% and average 4.2%, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7% to 2.61%. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. The fluorite ores also have replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

The world energy crisis has created a greatly expanded exploration program for energy fuels. The demand for materials required for drilling operations such as barite, which is the primary component of drilling fluids, has increased proportionally. As in the case of many other minerals, existing high grade barite mines are no longer capable of producing the required tonnage. Consequently, exploration and development of lower grade ore bodies has been increased. The need to produce a high quality product at maximum recovery rates, along with the ever changing economics affecting both selling price and production costs has triggered accelerated research programs toward more sophisticated and efficient beneficiation methods. Taking into account the specific gravity differential between barite (4.5) and the normal gangue minerals such as silica and calcite (2.7), gravity concentration methods are the prime consideration with flotation as a scavenging process. Greater emphasis on particle size liberation, size reduction and concentration is also indicated. In order to accomplish these objectives, it has been necessary to revert back to the old adage, "Recover your minerals as soon as they are free."

Introduction Friction Rock Stabilizers, trade name Split Sets, are presently under research and development by Ingersoll-Rand Company and Dr. James J. Scott, inventor. Conceived in 1953, the system is a patented process undergoing extensive field and laboratory testing. The author has published papers on the Split Set System earlier (References 4, 5, 6) The Split Set System holds promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The system produces an interior reinforcement to a rock mass which: 1. Is simple in its concept. 2. Adjusts to the degree of restraint needed to match rock properties. 3. Provides a yieldable support and, later, a more rigid support as it is needed. 4. Pre-loads the rock in compression to increase stability. 5. Is a full-contact, fully tensioned device to resist rock loads. 6. Minimizes the stress concentration effects inherent in many interior support devices. 7. Improves safety for the miner. 8. Is cheaper than a grouted system. 9. Offers the rock mechanics engineer an opportunity to design in a fashion not before possible.

This report presents the results of experiments to evaluate different types of mine fire sensors in an underground mine environment using a commercially available atmospheric monitoring system. To determine how well carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors respond for purposes of fire detection, experiments were conducted using test fires of different mine combustibles and for both flaming and nonflaming combustion. The experiments were designed to assess the response of fire sensors to different contaminants and different contaminant levels produced from the test fires. The experiments were performed in the Safety Research Coal Mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Bruceton Research Facility in the presence of an average ventilating air velocity of 1.6 m/s (315 fpm). Five fire sensor stations were located downstream of the test fire at fixed locations, with each sensor station consisting of four sensors: a CO fire sensor and three different smoke sensors, of which two were evaluated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for intrinsic safety and the third was used extensively in underground mines overseas but not evaluated by MSHA for intrinsic safety. All four sensors were mounted near the center of the entry and in the upper onethird of the entry height. A UL-listed combination ionization and photoelectric smoke sensor was mounted near the roof at the first sensor station and its responses were compared against the responses of the four CO and smoke fire sensors. Sensor response data, contaminant travel times, and the impact of fire on the existing ventilation flow are discussed as they apply to earlywarning fire detection. Of significance in the analysis is the need for performance standards for mine fire sensors in order to provide for consistent and timely early warning of developing fires.

The Hilton Concentrator treats a laminated stratiform silver- lead-zinc ore to produce separate lead, zinc and bulk concentrates. Commissioning commenced in December 1989. Grinding circuit performance is above design with a mean flotation feed sizing of 80% passing 65 microns at 800 000 tonnes / year throughput. Grinding is done in two stages with an open circuit low diameter : length ratio SAG mill followed by a closed circuit ball mill. SAG mill control philosophy is to maintain a fixed feedrate for stability of flotation and to control mill charge weight to a setpoint with feed water. It is planned to increase throughput to 1 million tones / year in the second half of 1991. Proposed milling circuit modifications include close circuiting the SAG mill by recycling a portion of the ball mill cyclone underflow, increasing the SAG mill speed from 73% to 79% of critical and offloading of lower than feed grade -20mm /+7mm SAG mill ore scats. This paper will describe current mill operating practice with operating data and key mill developments since the beginning of operations.

Increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width in gassy coalbeds, may result in unexpected increases in methane emissions. To investigate this problem, continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229 m (750 ft) wide longwall faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7 percent (0.6 m3/min (20 cfm)), to 8.6 m3/min (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces at the VP-3 Mine could increase methane emissions by as much as 13 percent (1.8 m3/min (65 cfm)) to 16.1 m3/min (567 cfm). The geologic and mine design factors in¬fluencing the variation in face emissions between the two mines will be discussed.

At Henderson Operations the 24-kilometer conveyor system consists of three main conveyors with lengths of 1.2 km, 16.7 km and 6 km. Upon commissioning of the conveyor system, the Henderson maintenance department was challenged with the inspection and monitoring of over 50,000 idlers. To take a proactive approach to idler maintenance, an idler tracking database system was developed. Using the idler tracking program, the Henderson Crush & Convey department now has the ability to provide data for engineering solutions to idler problems and to manage thousands of idlers for priority replacement work and warranty purposes. Recognizing the potential for injury to Henderson employees in the process of idler handling, Henderson approached idler replacement as a material handling process. Material handling solutions have resulted in failed idlers being replaced and discarded from the underground environment without ever touching a human hand. This paper will detail how Henderson tracks idlers in all primary conveyor belts and how an innovative idler handling system can result in reduced risks to conveyor maintenance employees.

Introduction For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in decades. Hecla's Silver Shaft project, scheduled to go into production by the end of this year, includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2.4 km (7,700 ft), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 m (2,000 ft) of development drifting and stope preparation. The project was conceived in the fall of 1979, and the duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is testimony to what can be accomplished when a mining company and a contractor work as a team rather than developing into two warring camps, as often happens. Redpath Corp. to perform feasibility investigations and design engineering related to a proposed new shaft facility at the Lucky Friday Mine. Two Sun Juan Basin studies were completed through the USGS National Coal Availability program. The study areas are in the northwest Bisti field (Fruitland Formation) and in the eastern Standing Rock field (Menefee Formation). In the Bisti and Standing Rock areas, the original coal resource5 are estimated at 4.66 and 3.1 7 Gt (5.14 and 3.49 billion st), respectively. The Bisti coal resources are greatly reduced by the Bisti-De-Nu- Zin wilderness area, which contains an estimated 1.13 Gt (1.25 billion st) of coal. Technological restrictions remove 32.5% from Standing Rock's original resource. Available resources are 60%. 2.79 Gt (3.07 billion st), of the Bisti original resource and 65%, 2.07 Gt (2.28 billion st), of the original Standing Rock resource.

The Henderson Mine is located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. A project is underway to replace the existing rail system which transports molybdenum ore 15 miles from the mine to the mill using three flight conveyor system. The first conveyor is a 1 mile, high lift conveyor which transports the ore from an underground crushing station to the end of the existing rail tunnel. The second conveyor is 10 miles in length and utilizes the existing rail tunnel to transport the ore from the mine, which is on the east side of the Continental Divide, to the mill located on the west side. The third conveyor takes ore from the tunnel portal to the mill through a series of 7 horizontal curves and inclines up to 15 degrees. The project applies advanced conveyor design to tackle the installation of the system in an operating mine and achieve the highest possible level of reliability. This paper outlines the design process for this system, discusses the options which were evaluated and how the current design evolved.

The Bureau of Mines, as part of a program to improve mine planning and development, is currently investigating the effects of pillar load transfer, which can impact mining operations within a multiple-seam configuration. A comparative study was performed at two separate mine sites to determine the effects of this load transfer mechanism. The Bureau installed and monitored instrumentation at both sites to gather pertinent data on rock mechanics. At mine site A overburden depth varied dramatically in the vicinity of the study area and reached a topographic high at the study site: inner burden thickness was less than a pillar width (40 to 45 ft) (12 to 14 m): floor heaving was experienced in both coalbeds where sandstone and/or shale floor units were observed: overlays of the mine layouts show pillars were not totally super-positioned: a maximum of 5 in (13 cm) of roof to floor convergence was measured and pressure readings indicated pillar core loading only and increased to a maximum of 7,000 psig (48,300 kPa) over instrument setting pressure.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has been working since mid-1977 on a fast track to meet a court-imposed schedule to rehabilitate a large wastewater collection and treatment system at an estimated cost of $1.7 billion. Because of glaciation, the Milwaukee area has an extremely complex geologic environment. The rock surface ranges from outcroppings in the northern and western parts of the area to 76 m (250 ft) below the surface at the mouth of the Milwaukee and Menomonee Rivers. Bedrock beneath the glacial mantle is a thick sequence of early to middle Paleozoic sedimentary rock. To cope with the many complexities of this large public works project, a Program Management Office (PMO) concept has been employed. A Geotechnical Engineering Group was established within the PMO to provide a continuous , unified approach to geotechnical engineering and full disclosure of all geotechnical information in the construction contract documents. It provides qeotechnical engineering to design and construction, develops and maintains a qeotechnical data base, and participates on the claims resource team.

The setting of tasks for the process control of coal cleaning, and in this connection the requirements for instrumentation can be classified into the following three fields: - Monitoring the operation of individual units, or process steps, - Control of units or process steps, - Control of the entire coal cleaning process with the intention of optimizing the operation and the profitability of the process. Instrumentation is affected by the type of cleaning processes. For introduction Figure 1 shows the simplified flow sheet of coal preparation which is usual in the German Ruhr District and in which desirable places for the measurement of ash, moisture and sulfur content are marked. The preparation plant is supplied with run-of-mine coal from the shaft via a homogenization facility. In a first step of primary classifying the raw feed coal is screened at about 10 mm. The raw coarse coal ( = 10 mm) is sorted by jig washers or heavy-medium separators. the raw fine coal (< 10 mm) at first is pneumatically sized at about 0.5 to 0.75 mm. The fines, the aspirated dust, are a finished partial product which will be added to the final metallurgical or steam coal. The material 10 to 0.75 mm subsequently is sorted in fine coal jigs and dewatered in centrifuges. The sludge obtained with the wet cleaning processes is dewatered in thickeners and fed to the flotation. Concentrate and tailings are dewatered by filters or bowl centrifuges and by chamber filter presses or belt filter presses, respectively. The partial products coarse coal, fine coal, flotation concentrate, aspirated dust, and middlings are blended to result in the sellable products metallurgical and steam coal.

Coal mine bumps the violent failures of over-stressed coal&apos;, present a safety hazard to miners when mining is conducted in deep, bump prone coal mines. Two different longwall gate entry systems were evaluated in a Southern Appalachian coal mine located in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed under approximately 610 m of overburden which included a massive sandstone member. Both gate entry systems employed a center abutment pillar flanked by yield pillars. The original design employed a 24.4 m square abutment pillar&apos; while the new design employed a 36.6 by 54.9 m&apos; abutment pillar. Rock mechanics instrumentation data analysis and in-mine observations indicated that this increase in abutment pillar size significantly decreased bump potential. The new design in worse case conditions increased effective bearing area 62 pct with only a 9 pct increase in gate entry system width and eliminated face bumps that wer7 experienced with the original gate entry design.

The choice of the flotation reagent that suits a particular coal has become more complicated with the development of new, more efficient reagents. Frothers and conditioning reagents, in particular, have experienced a dramatic reevaluation of their role in floating various types of coals. This paper offers a better understanding of how each of the following factors contributes to the reagent selection: 1. Natural Flotability 2. Degree of Oxidation 3. Size Distribution 4. Convictions of Customer The application of conditioning reagents - both promoters and emulsifiers can substantially improve the coal recovery. Some low-rank, hydrophylic coal, previously considered unfloatable can be economically recovered with the use of the proper reagent.
