Fifteen samples of chert from seven localities in Ohio were tested for potential durability and reactivity in concrete. The tests determined are porosity, pore-size distribution, relative degree crystallinity, specific surface area, and degree of dissolution according to the ASTM C289-71, Potential Reactivity of Aggregates, Chemical Methods. The results of these tests were compared with petrographic, electron optical, physical-chemical, and engineering properties of the chert samples. Based on these tests, the important properties that affect the durability and reactivity of chert in concrete were observed to be: (1) porosity, (2) pore-size distribution or pore spectra, (3) relative degree of crystallinity, (4) grain size, (5) specific surface area, (6) impurities, and (7) amount and species of quartz present-all of which are functions of original composition, time (geologic age), depth of burial, tectonics, and diagenesis. Preliminary results of this study indicated that the geologic history and physical-chemical properties of chert vary from one sample to another, and any one or combination of these parameters affect the performance of the chert in concrete. These complex interrelationships are difficult to ascertain; if the performance of the chert in concrete is to be predicted, it is necessary to study in detail this enigmatic material.

Leaching has been used since the 1600s on unlined ore dumps and since the late 1970s on lined leach pads for the recovery of metals from mined ore, the latter typically called ?heap? leaching and the former ?dump? leaching. Modern day run-of-mine (ROM) or crushed ore heaps are stacked in controlled lifts on lined leach pads and irrigated with a solvent solution (dilute alkaline cyanide for precious meals, dilute sulfuric acid for base metals and uranium). Conventional lined leach pads store process solutions and any storm water, snow melt and cumulative wet season surplus water by gravity flow to external ponds. Impounding valley leach pads (also known as valley fill heaps) differ from conventional leach pads by storing various combinations of process liquid solution and surplus water within internal ponds by using the interstitial pore volume of the ore. While impounding liquids within the heap is simple in concept, impounding leach pads are more complicated for construction and containment compared to conventional leach pads with external ponds.

"Seeing the elephant" was a term often heard from 1849 to 1859, the period of the great California Gold Rush. The phrase was used by those who dreamed of instant wealth that was believed could be found in California's virgin earth and mighty rivers. When news of fabulous gold strikes throughout the Mother Lode reached far away places, thousands of gold seekers left home and family to join in this incredible adventure. The barren, placid state of California soon became one of the most bustling, populous areas in the West. Before the Rush Before 1848, Mexico ruled California. It was then a remote region, isolated from the urbane world of the East by 2900 km (1800 miles) of scorching desert and impassible mountains. By sea, it was 29 000 km (18,000 miles) via Cape Horn. Spaniards and Mexicans settled the coastal lands on tracts donated to them by the Mexican government. The inland area was the domain of Indians and a few settlers who also had been granted estates by the government. Among those settlers was Captain John Sutter. He had been fortunate enough to obtain about 11 leagues of land (spanning 100 km or 60 miles in length) from Governor Alvarado of Mexico. Sutter was somewhat of a visionary and possessed a gifted tongue. He managed to receive most of what he desired with minimal trouble. Enchanted with Sutter's personality, Alvarado promised him Mexican citizenship. Alvarado also commissioned him to become "representative of the government and officer of justice on the Northern frontier." With uncanny foresight, Sutter began building a fortress on his land in the Sacramento Valley. It later became known as Sutter's Fort. It was more than just a fort, however. It also became a stopping place and home for many foreigners and Americans who traveled to California, and it eventually became the mecca for overland pilgrims. Sutter engaged in many projects. These included a cattle ranch, fur trade and trapping, and the construction of an irrigation system. With the influx of immigrants over the years, the community around the fort grew rapidly. Lumber was much in demand and Captain Sutter agreed to supply the necessary capital for a community sawmill. The site chosen was some 72 km (45 miles) northeast of the fort on the south fork of the American River in the town of Coloma. During the course of its construction, Sutter's carpenter, James Marshall, discovered a problem with the tailrace on the mill. First Strike Early in the morning on Jan. 24, 1848, Marshall was checking the tailrace. He noticed an object shining in a foot of water at the bottom of a ditch. He reached down and picked it up. His heart began to thump wildly as he realized he was holding a gold nugget. Sutter planned to keep the find a secret for as long as possible. Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. The recent increase in size of open-pit mining operations has resulted in major improvements in efficiency that are beneficial to the mining industry. Higher bench heights, larger diameter blast-holes, and more powerful explosives have played an important part in reducing mining costs. These measures have, however, resulted in increased energy concentrations in the blast area, which can result in severe backbreak problems for final pit walls. If backbreak is not controlled, a decrease in the overall pit slope angle will ultimately be necessary, and consequences, such as decreased recoverable ore reserves and increased waste-to-ore ratios, will result. Greater amounts of loose face rock will be produced, and planned safety berms will be less effective or nonexistent. Hazardous working conditions can also result. Remedial measures, such as scaling large areas and using wire mesh or other artificial support, are very expensive and difficult to implement. There must be a trade-off between the money saved by using larger blasts, and the time spent to maintain pit wall quality. The best approach is to control blasting effects so the inherent strength of pit walls is not destroyed. Presplit and trim blasting are two control blasting techniques used to accomplish this. Both techniques are designed to create a low explosive energy concentration per unit of wall area at the perimeter of the pit. Energy concentration of the main production blast must also be controlled to avoid damaging the final pit wall. A low-energy concentration at the final wall can be obtained by decoupling charges, decking charges, using less powerful explosives, decreasing blasthole diameters, and changing the burden and spacing. Rock properties-fragmentation and the final state of the pit wall-influence the success of a blast. The most important properties to consider are: in situ rock strength, and the nature, frequency, and orientation of structural features. Since these variables cannot be controlled, they must be evaluated by suitable field tests, and then a control blast can be designed using controllable variables, such as spacing, burden, and hole diameter, so the blast will be successful for appropriate rock conditions. One main thrust of this article is to show how control blasts can be successfully designed for larger hole sizes, up to 381-mm-diam. While efforts to produce a good control blast in shovel/truck pits have been ongoing for some time, recent use of a modified presplit technique in dragline operations has helped reduce water problems, improve safety, and increase dragline productivity in a number of surface coal mines. This article presents examples on designing and using presplit and trim blasting for large hole operations in both shovel/truck and dragline mines. Presplit Blasting As introduction to presplit blasting, Fig. 1 illustrates a typical presplit blast layout using 102 mm-diam presplit holes for 381¬mm-diam production holes. For this type of blast, presplit holes would normally be drilled first, ahead of main production holes. The choice can then be made between loading and firing the presplit line or infilling the main blast. For gold recovery, a Chinese refractory, high-sulfur gold concentrate was subjected to biooxidation with high pulp density in a single stirred-tank reactor. The flotation concentrate contained 36.9 percent sulfur (S) and 33.9 percent iron (Fe). Different experimental regimes for biooxidation were applied. With a mixed culture and by controlling the amount of addition of the gold ores and the pH of the biooxidation system, maximum iron oxidation of 82.6 percent and sulfur oxidation of 79.3 percent were achieved. The experimental results indicate that the pH control was beneficial to the biooxidation of this concentrate. Approximately 28.4 percent of elemental sulfur (S8) was found in the oxidizing slags. Two dissolution mechanisms of elemental sulfur are proposed: (1) FeS2 → S80 → S2O32− → SO42− and (2) FeS2 → S80 → SO42−. The high pH had a positive effect on the reduction of the S8. The results of thermodynamic analysis indicate that as an oxidant the dissolved oxygen can effectively reduce the Gibbs free energy of the pyrite oxidation process and, compared with the reaction of ferric iron as the single oxidant, the oxidation of pyrite is easier. The efficiency of the gold recovery was related to the iron oxidation as well as the sulfur oxidation. Gold and silver recoveries of 92.4 percent and 66.4 percent, respectively, were achieved.

There has been an increasing trend in recent months by regulatory agencies to require that estimates be made of the hydraulic head acting, under operational conditions, on the surface of primary leach pad liners. This move towards inferred performance standards, rather than specifying a prescriptive standard for all sites regardless of economics, is to be generally welcomed. The theory of flow on a sloped beach pad, which was developed by East et al, 1987 (Reference 1 and 3) has been refined and extended. Unitized curves have been developed by graphically displaying the seepage losses and resulting dissolved gold lost as seepage through the primary liner as an aid to pad liner selection and design. Very little information is available of actual hydraulic head profiles acting on the liners beneath heap leached ores. Attempts have been made to measure these by drilling from the top of the heap and installing piezometers at the base. With this procedure it is difficult to obtain accurate data due to the fact that the drilling operation itself creates a highly permeable vertical flow path which may not exist to the same degree elsewhere in the heap. Combined with the fact that it is almost impossible to ensure that the piezometer tip is sitting directly above the liner without the risk of causing some damage to the liner itself. The best time to install hydraulic head monitoring devices on the pad liner is during construction and when piezometers can be carefully placed directly above the liner and suitably protected hydraulic lines laid to ensure full hydrostatic head measurement with simple manometer devices.

Operations research includes the application of systems analysis to mining operations, the acquisition of field data and the creation and verification of computer models of these operations. These activities result in the generation of computerized mine planning tools which have a firm base-in observational facts. The Surface Mining Laboratory of the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), in Devon, Alberta has been engaged in operations research activities since 1982. The work includes computer simulation of truck/shovel, continuous mining equipment and dragline operations. Other examples include cooperative programs with industry (such as the demonstration and evaluation of an integrated truck management system), the development of a device to measure off-highway truck rolling resistance, and an automated remote data transmission network. The presentation outlines existing and proposed research projects of the Operations Research group.

In this study, several methodologies to manage low grade and often competent portion of the ore have been proposed and tested in lab, pilot and operational scales. Relevant to this subject, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE) has developed Grade Engineering® (GE) concept to modify feed streams by rejecting the low grade and possibly hard components in the stream at the early stages of a value chain. Application of GE requires to understand the impact of the process on the value chain as they are value modifiers on in situ opportunities. Traditional modelling approaches and tools do not have the ability to run the analysis in a block model scale with high fidelity in an integrated value chain. Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES) in conjunction with sophisticated analytical tools such as a neural network (NN) was used to develop and reconcile a fully integrated value chain. The value chain model makes it possible to run all available blocks in the Geomet block model, which could be several millions, under possible scenarios for Grade Engineering for economic evaluation analysis and mine planning.

Hydrometallurgical processes for copper flotation concentrates avoid the S02 emission problems associated with smelting, but they require oxidation of copper to obtain solubilization during leaching. The resulting copper ions must be reduced to metal, which normally requires large amounts of energy or energy equivalent reagents such as hydrogen or iron. The conventional reduction method is electrowinning which is labor intensive and involves 35 to 40% of both the en-tire operating and capital cost of the better hydrometallurgical processes. Smeltermen are correct in criticizing the available hydrometallurgical processes for being more energy intensive than modern smelting processes. Clearly, there is considerable incentive to reduce the cost and energy required for reducing copper ions from solution. Furthermore, it is thermodynamically possible to do this using sulfur contained in the concentrate itself. In fact, the thermodynamic potential of oxidizing sulfur from S+4 to the S+6 state is greater than required to reduce cupric ion to metallic copper. (1) Realization of this potential in a practical process would significantly reduce the cost of hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide concentrates because sulfur would become a cost-free reducing agent. An apparently practical method is to use SO3 and HSO3 ions, obtained by ammonia scrubbing of SO2 from a concentrate roaster gas, to reduce leached copper to metal in an autoclave. This reduction step is the Jumau 1907 patent. (2) A series of steps including sulfite reduction constituting a crude flowsheet was suggested by Parker in 1976(3), but apparently little development work has been done by him, since he has been interested in new routes of refining the resulting copper powder. The purposes of the present paper are to elaborate on the Jumau-Parker thrust. Describe a detailed complete sulfite process flowsheet based on materials and energy balances, discuss the chemistry, and discuss further work that is required to develop this process. The results of the present paper are largely based on a synthesis of the steps using handbook chemistry. Process materials, utilities costs, and energy requirements are projected to be unusually low.

Within the minerals industry, flotation is the predominant method when processing sulphide ores. There is hardly any competition in this area because of the high efficiency and low costs of flotation. When processing other ore types magnetic or gravity• methods are commonly used and sometimes leaching methods are selected. The wide variation of the properties of gold (high value, low ore grades, softness, high specific gravity etc.) sets challenging requirements to the processing methods and particu­larly for flotation machines, which should be able to effectively recover free fine gold, coarse gold and gold bearing minerals throughout the full size range. In gold processes the amount of concentrate is usually low, but in some cases large amounts of gold bearing sulphides e.g pyrites has to be recovered. In gold processing seldom does only one method provide the optimum results, but the recovery is usually made using several complementary technologies: gravity separation, leaching and flotation are the most common ones. Mineralogy is the determin­ing factor when selecting the method or methods to be used.

Ammonia and nitrate in metallurgical operations arise from several sources: (1) the use of ammonium nitrate based explosives, e.g. ANFO; (2) the use of cyanide for gold extraction which is degraded to ammonia by most cyanide destruction techniques; and (3) the use of nitrogenous reagents in the mill for neutralisation, flotation and extraction. The concentrations of ammonia and nitrate in effluents vary from 10-50 ppm and 25-300 ppm respectjvely. A number of environmental problems are associated with both ammonia and nitrate. Both of these forms of nitrogen can contribute to the eutrophication of receiving waters. Ammonia and organic nitrogen can also cause high dissolved oxygen demands in receiving waters. Ammonia is also toxic to fish, particularly at elevated pH values. Several methods are in use for the removal of ammonia and nitrate from municipal wastewater, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff. To date, no treatment systems have been developed specifically for the removal of nitrogen from mine and mill effluents. This paper will report on some removal techniques that have been tested using actual and synthetic mine effluents.

At Monterey Coal's No. 1 Mine in central Illinois, it became necessary to predict if the sulfur content of individual trainloads of coal would exceed a contract sulfur maximum. Using geostatistics and Monte Carlo-type simulations, a forecasting procedure was developed to meet this need. The developed procedure predicts the monthly, mean sulfur content of the coal shipped and the probability of individual shipments exceeding the contract limit. During the first five months of using this procedure, the forecasted, monthly mean sulfur value was within 0.03% of actual. This represents a significant improvement over the inverse-distance, gridding-based, forecasting used previously.

Over the years, many producers, including Solvay Minerals, extended their product lines by manufacturing other sodium products based on trona. This paper focuses on the criteria used by Solvay Minerals in the selection of new products added at its Green River, WY operations. An example is given in the selection of caustic soda production.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHFM) in Leadville, CO will induct the class of 2011 on Sept. 10, 2011. Representing the coal, metallurgical/processing, research and development, marble and lead industries, this year?s inductees cover a diverse crosssection of the mining industry. William Francis Diamond, Wayne Hazen, Redfield Proctor and Jeffrey Zelms will join 210 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 24th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. The members of this year?s class were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Diamond had an illustrious engineering and managerial career that spanned four decades with Island Creek Coal Co. During that time, he was responsible for the engineering and construction of the deepest coal mines producing in North America at the time.

Because of the Chilean Ministry of Mining's interest in the development of industrial minerals, the Chilean Geological and Mining Service (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería, SERNAGEOMIN) has carried out a research program during the last two years to identify projects that represent interesting investment opportunities for small- to medium-scale operations in Chile. Most important of these projects are: (1) Quebrada Lluta aluminum sulphate, for drinking- and industrial-water treatment, with a potential domestic and foreign mar- ket of almost 43,000 tonnes per year and investments of about US$1.8 million; (2) Quebrada Lluta-Quebrada Cardones pumice, for abrasives, filters, fillers, and light- weight aggregates, with a potential market of about 30,000 tonnes per year, and in- vestments of US$2.0 million; (3) El Maule dolomite, for soil conditioner and iron smelting, with a total potential domestic market of some 60,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2.0 million; (4) Las Escaleras bentonite, for animal feed, pelletising, and oil absorbents, with a potential market of almost 6,000 tonnes per year, and investments of about US$2.4 million; (5) Laraquete-Carampangue andalucite, for alumina refractories, with a future total domestic and foreign demand of about 15,000 tonnes per year, and estimated investments of US$2-2.5 million; (6) Rio Lía garnet, for fillers and sand-blasting abrasives, whose domestic market represents 10,000 tonnes per year, with investments of US$2.3 million; and (7) Munilque pumice, for building bricks and panels, with a potential domestic market of 250,000 tonnes per year, and investments of US$1.4 million. The development of these projects will represent an important increase and a significant diversification in Chilean industrial-minerals production.

The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.

Development of the Twin Buttes mine entailed the largest known preproduction stripping job in the history of mining. It linked earthmovers and conveyor belts in a new approach to development of a pit that may reach, or even exceed, dimensions of 1 x 1-1/2 miles at the surface and go as deep as 1800 feet. The orebody to be stripped was covered by an average of 460 feet of alluvial gravels, which presented an initial stripping job of great magnitude. The initial pit layout and the original time schedule established early in 1965 called for the excavation and disposal of about 250,000,000 tons of alluvial overburden before the end of 1969. Allowing about a year for equipment delivery, this schedule left four years to do the job averaging about 62-1/2 million tons per year. In 1964 when The Anaconda Company undertook the development of Twin Buttes, it was recognized that special planning was necessary for the disposal of waste material and tailings. Environ- mental control was a prime consideration and is particularly sensitive in the Twin Buttes area due to the proximity to residential developments. Disposal of the 250,000,000 tons of alluvium, as well as future rock and tailing waste material, presented a problem which Anaconda engineers resolved by designing a plan to spread out much of the alluvium over an extended area, including a massive 11- 1/2 mile dike system which will impound mill tailing in three basins. "Underground refuge alternatives require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the refuge alternative. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that pressure relief valves prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested a variety of pressure relief valves using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork and various sensors to determine if the subject pressure relief valves meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics, including opening pressure and flow rate, were measured for five different pressure relief valves under a variety of conditions. The subject pressure relief valves included two off-theshelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place refuge alternatives, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel refuge alternative and is currently being used in some built-in-place refuge alternatives. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.03 to 0.22 psi) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/ min (683 scfm). As tested, some of the pressure relief valves did not meet the 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi) relief specification.IntroductionThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the United States in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement (U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration, MSHA, 2006). Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency refuge alternatives and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such refuge alternatives can be either self-contained mobile units or built-inplace facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for MSHA approval of refuge alternatives and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the refuge alternatives. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe refuge alternative atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure, in the refuge alternative, as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor (MSHA, 2008)."

An 81 hectare (200 acre) tailings impoundment at a taconite operation in Wyoming that ceased operations in 1983 has been a source of blowing dust. The site qualified for reclamation under Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land (AML) reclamation program. The ultimate reclamation construction included: incorporating commercially available organic amendments and fertilizers into a 300 mm (12 in) thick "cap" of a sterile clay loam cover material, lowering the water level in an adjacent flooded mine pit that was feeding uncontrolled seeps into the tailings basin, constructing a wide tailings pond spillway that allows flood control while minimizing seasonal water level fluctuations in the pond, and building rock berms and rock snow fences for wind erosion control and soil moisture preservation. Tree planting in the protective wind/snow shadows of rock berms and rock snow fences, and the plugging of a decant pipe are planned for future work.
