This paper is motivated by the belief that increasing drilling and blasting costs will not necessarily bring about better digging or crushing productivity. As a matter of fact it can be counter productive as the ensuing discussion will show. In the two case studies presented herein when powder factor increased, productivity at a rope shovel and at a primary crusher decreased. Experience has shown that equipment (shovel and primary crusher) productivity increases as the powder factor increases and concurrently operating costs decrease. This is illustrated by Figure 1where the graph shows (assuming drilling costs constant) that for increases in powder factor initially operating costs might fall till a certain point and then they start to go up again. By the same token we need to understand what is the behavior of the operation’s productivity. It seems intuitive productivity goes up for increases in powder factor but when an operation reaches the point of minimum operating cost one could say that productivity reached its maximum. For continuing increases in powder factor can productivity still go up or does it go down? This paper presents two examples where the productivities of a surface coal mine and of a quarry are reduced for increases in powder factor. This indicates that these two operations could be operating to the right of their minimum operating costs and maximum productivity and therefore wasting precious drilling and blasting dollars and resources. Moreover, their productivity is following the red dotted line in Figure 1 and the question becomes can they follow the blue dotted line for increased drilling and blasting costs? The industry owes to itself to determine this minimum operating cost point and what can be done in case that the productivity goes down afterwards despite an increase in drilling and blasting costs. In other words, utilize your drilling and blasting resources correctly. In the two examples that follow single explosive loading strategies make powder factor a valid means of comparing the results of productivity as a function of powder factor. Also, external factors such as equipment operator influence are eliminated due to the long time span considered in the analysis

Techniques utilized to incorporate geological data in computer modeling and ore reserve estimation have undergone considerable evolution during the past fifteen years. Computer analysis and evaluation of two precious metal deposits are presented as examples of innovative computer techniques developed at Asarco. The first is a gold deposit occurring in a steeply dipping Precambrian greens tone sequence. The second is a manto-like manganiferous silver deposit occurring in a relatively flat sequence of Late-Paleozoic sediments. In both deposits, four sub-horizontal zones of geological influence are evaluated.

The transition from centrally planned to market economy affects methods of economic analysis. The models which were used in the past are riot valid presently, however they we're the seed which initialized the development of methods and applications. There is more than twenty years of experience in modeling of coal mining development. The first attempts were devoted to select the moment of mine construction commencement in order to meet planned output. In Poland significant development of such models began in 1986. Within the Central Research and Development Program there has been a continuous development of models. These models from econometric to optimization ones, were a certain sequence which, in accordance with changing economy system, led to the last version of the model. It is the most suitable one for contemporary problems of coal mining in present Polish circumstances.

A seismic fissuration index (K) is defined as the ratio of the difference in the P and S wave velocities obtained when a dry rock specimen is tested both under a load equal to half the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock (Vo) and without an applied load (Vd) to the velocity obtained without an applied load (Vd), as K = (Vo - Vd)/Vd. A similar seismic fissuration index is also proposed for classifying the dry rock mass in terms of field seismic velocities. The field equation is extended by including the intact rock seismic velocities. K is found to be related to the porosity of rocks. The proposed equation can equally be used for characterizing saturated rocks, using S-wave velocities. However, the time average equation should be used for characterizing saturated rocks, using P-wave velocities, even though this equation gives upperbound estimates of the rock material and fracture porosities.

Currently there is considerable interest in applying in situ leaching technology to recover copper from oxide ores. In many instances, the distribution of copper mineralization in these deposits is fracture controlled. Laboratory core-leaching experiments have demonstrated that leaching response is sensitive to the dissolution of copper from and the formation of channels along main fractures. Solution short- circuiting can be a major limitation of this technology. This paper describes the application of macromolecular polymers to achieve flow-profile control during leaching. Pre- and post-leached fractures were characterized by computerized tomography (CT) analysis.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage stope mining can be employed in steeply dipping veins where both the wall and the vein material are sufficiently strong to stand with only minimal ground support. Shrinkage stope mining takes advantage of the swell in volume produced in breaking in-place ore. This expanded volume of ore is allowed to occupy part of the mined-out vein, and in so doing provides ground sup¬port and a working surface for the miners. Only enough of the ore is drawn after each stoping cut to allow work¬ing room. Not until the entire mining block has been broken is the full amount of broken ore drawn from the stope. DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOR SHRINKAGE STOPING The vein is developed into stoping blocks, each of which is 76 to 91 m (250 to 300 ft) in length and 61 m (200 ft) between levels. Level development, described later, is either on the vein or parallel to it with crosscuts periodically driven over to the vein. There are usually two exits from each stope. The first entry is a raise at one end driven either conventionally by raise climber, or by a raised borehole. Present practice is that this raise, put in from level to level, is either a 2.1- x 2.1-m (7- x 7-ft) Alimak raise or a 1.2- to 1.8-m (4- to 6-ft) diam borehole. Either raise system will require pro¬visions for an ore chute carried with the stope to the haulage level or the scram drift. At 9- to 12-m (30- to 40-ft) vertical intervals, dogholes are developed from the raise so that when stoping breaks back into these dogholes, timber or steel sets and necessary service facilities can be installed. The second entry to the stope may be either a similar raise at the stope endline, or more economically, a cribbed raise carried with the stope. As previously stated, development of the ore block is achieved by either drifting on the vein or by paralleling the vein with a footwall lateral and then crosscutting over to the vein at specified intervals. In the following discussion, three basic cases are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In Fig. 1, development is in the footwall by a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless lateral. A heading is also driven on the ore and taken either full width or driven a standard size and slabbed to the vein width. Approxi¬mately 9-m (30-ft) long crosscuts on 7.6-m (25-ft) cen¬ters are driven from the lateral to the vein. For ease in muck handling they are usually put in on a slant rather than at right angles. A single orepass, located off the lateral and in the center of one stope block, can serve not only that stope, but also one on either side, up to a tramming distance of not more than 137 m (450 ft). Raises are put at the stope endlines on 91-m (300-ft) centers. The back of the vein is shot down and just enough broken material is drawn off to permit access for men to work off the broken ore. Development in Fig. 2 progresses by driving a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless heading on the footwall side of the vein. The ore block is delineated by raises on 91-m (300-ft) centers. Crosscuts are again driven on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers over to the vein. Approximately four rounds are then taken up to the vein and each round is successively belled out so that all the crosscuts (pockets, in this case) connect. A technique developed by Tattersall has been modified and used to explain the flocculation of calcium montmorillonite with polyethylene oxide. The results indicated that there are two types of bond systems operating during the flocculation sequence. Also, flocculation results are highly dependent on the shear rate and the amount of polymer added.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the role of water resource monitoring in mining activities and to discuss the considerations that go into designing and implementing a monitoring program. The design of a monitoring program is invariably based on sound engineering and scientific judgement since no design formulas exist that can be universlly applied to the monitoring of all activities. As discussed in this paper, however, a methodology of designing a water resource monitoring program does exist. In order to cost-effectively monitor the water resource impacts of mining activities, the following three monitoring related items should be understood: 1. the role of water resource monitoring in the planning, construction, and operational stages of mine development, 2. the available water resources monitoring methods and the proper role of each method in the various scages of mine development, and 3. the strategies that should be followed in designing and implementing a water resource monitoring program.

Since 1965 when the first mole was used on Bureau work, the Bureau of Reclamation has completed 17 tunnels of over 5,000 feet in length. The longest was 12.8 miles. Total length of the 17 tunnels was 376,207 feet, or over 71 miles. The finished diameter varied from 7 feet 0 inch to 18 feet 0 inch with 82 percent (58 miles) being less than 12 feet 0 inch in diameter when lined. All of these tunnels except one are gravity flow, water conveyance tunnels with relatively flat gradient. One is a low-head pressure tunnel. All were constructed by contracts resulting from fixed-price bids. Starting in 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation initiated the practice of giving several options in the specifications on methods of tunnel excavation. Since that time, construction work has been completed on 17 tunnels. Of this number, 11 were mole excavated and 6 were excavated by conventional drill and blast methods. In general, there has been 2 feet of mole excavation for every 1 foot of drill and blast. Cost comparisons are based on only 13 tunnels because the Bureau has 4 recently completed tunnels that have pending claims; therefore, final cost data are not available. Some definite trends show from the data available; however, the number of completed tunnels in some categories is so small the results cannot really be considered a trend. As more data become available, the indications will become more reliable. The information is presented to indicate general trends and comparisons and cannot be meaningfully used for a one-on-one comparison because of individual tunnel differences not considered.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent on the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features. In order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application. This paper deals' with federal environmental regulations with emphasis on the hazardous waste regulations promulgated in May, 1980. The procedure of EP toxicity test and an example of the test are described. Brief account is given of the current trend and future outlook of regulations.

INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling in soil poses a unique set of problems to planners, designers and contractors. One of the important concerns is the impact of tunneling on the environment: not only the effects of noise, vibrations, construction traffic and surface traffic diversions, but also the effects of ground movements and dewatering on existing structures and facilities. Underpinning or other protection of structures often consume more than 10% of the total construction cost of an urban rapid transit tunnel, and another unknown percentage is expended on construction procedures designed to minimize these environmental effects. Ideally, many basic planning and design decisions should be based on reliable predictions of ground movements due to tunneling. Some of these decisions are: the choice of tunnel alignment and depth to minimize risks and effects of ground movements; selection of schemes to protect existing structures through soil improvement or underpinning, or outright acquisition and possible' demolition; relocation of utilities; selection of procedures for construction monitoring and project control; and the choice of construction and lining methods. To make rational decisions of this nature, the owner and his designers must perform analyses that will balance risks and costs of a variety of alternatives; but to make meaningful risk analyses, they must employ rational methods of predicting ground movements and their effects and must know the reliability of these predictions. Of course, the risk analyses also must consider politics, public relations, insurance and liabilities.

Based on the rules of strata behavior and the characteristics of rock movement, the elementary problems of using fully mechanized coal mining techniques in steeply dipping coal seams are described. A model of the "surrounding-support-rock" relationship is made. The support systems stability during fully mechanized mining of steeply dipping coal seams is studied. Then, a practical engineering example of the fully mechanized mining of a steeply dipping seam is presented. The seam used in the example is in the Lushuidong colliery, which is administrated by Huaying Mining Bureau, Sichuan Province.

Computer simulation models of working mines can be of great benefit to the mining engineer. Such models have been used in mine planning (how many trucks/shovels to have, when to add new equipment, etc.), mine design (should a dispatch system be purchased, where is the optimum location for mine equipment, etc.). A simulation model can be thought of as a dynamic representation of the mine and can easily be changed to reflect a wide variety of different situation. Often a major problem for the engineer is how to present the results of the simulation study. Using PROOF(R) animation it is now possible to interface the results of the simulation and project them onto a computer screen in cartoon fashion.

"The Cityringen project in Copenhagen, Denmark will form a new circular line in the city center and will consist of 21 new stations (17 + four transfer stations) and approximately 31 km (19 miles) of earth pressure balance (EPB) twin-bored tunnels.The new tunnels passed under the historical building of Magasin du Nord, McDonald’s and two pubs in the heart of the city with a minimum cover of about 4 m (13 ft).To minimize the movements, a complex system of compensation grouting and jet grouting soil treatment was performed. A detailed action plan between the parties involved allowed coping with the critical tunnel boring machine’s (TBM) successful passage.The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line underground Copenhagen and will include the City Circle Line, 15 km (9.5 miles) of twin tunnels looping around the city. The City Circle Line will form a new circular track inside the city center and will intersect the existing M1 and M2 lines at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg stations, as well as suburban train services at København H, Østerport and Nørrebro. It will extend the Metro network to the Nørrebro, Østerbro areas and the central station at København H (Fig.1). The two new lines M3 and M4 will run on the same tracks, but the M3 will be a circle route running around the entire line, whereas the M4 will drive from the station to the north side of the city.The €1.5 billion design-build contract was awarded by Metroselskabet in January 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture (JV) between the Italian companies Salini, Tecnimont Civil construction and Seli SpA. Since the bankruptcy of Seli SpA and Tecnimont, Salini Impregilo now owns 100 percent of the JV shares. Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, a subcontractor to CMT, was initially constituted as a Seli SpA subsidiary and, following the economic difficulties of Seli SpA, was acquired in 2015 by Salini Impregilo. Seli Denmark is in charge of the tunnels excavation and lining and owns the four 5.84-m (19-ft) diameter Seli/Kawasaki earth pressure balance machines."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an experimental method to evaluate the relative effectiveness of water additives on the extinguishment of coal fires. The experiments were conducted in the fire zone of the multiple entry section of the Bruceton Experimental Mine. Chambers filled with one hundred and eighty kilograms of Pittsburgh seam coal were ignited and allowed to burn until well developed fires were achieved. Extinguishing agent-water solutions were then applied to the fires and the quantity required to extinguish the fires compared to the amount of water alone required to extinguish similar fires. A 20% diammonium phosphate-water solution required an average of 22 L to extinguish the coal fires, while two commercially available additive-water solutions required an average of 30.6 and 30.3 L, respectively. The average amount of water required to extinguish the fires was 28 L. An analysis of covariance, using the thermal energy of the coalbed, Q, to quantify the fire at the time of extinguishment, showed that the diammonium phosphate-water solution was slightly more effective at extinguishing these coal fires than water alone, while the two commercially available additive-water solutions were statistically equivalent to water alone.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) began research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from underground coal mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist (ALH). ALH includes a U-tube pipeline that can be installed through an existing shaft or two surface-drilled holes connecting the mine level to the surface. Bench- and pilot-scale models were tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a riser pipe by injecting compressed air microbubbles. A prototype injector was developed that continuously compacted -50-mm (2-in.), run-of-mine coal in a screw feeder and injected a thick coal slurry into ALH. Initial production rates of 40 t/h (44 stph) through a 200-mm-(8-in.-) diam riser pipeline were achieved with a50-m- (165-ft-) high pilot-scale model. The potential productivity was expected to increase to 100 t/h (110 stph) through modification of the coal injector.

Miners have long known that rock noise, or the popping and cracking of the rock commonly heard during mining, can indicate instability of the mine structure. For many years, miners have "listened" to the rock talk and many times have interpreted changes in rock noise activity to be a warning of failure and have retreated from the potential failure area. Microseismics, or the study of rock noises, was begun in the early 1940s partly because of this historical fact. Microseismics is based on using geophysical equipment to detect and analyze rock noises on audible and subaudible levels. Thus, these systems are much more sensitive than the human ear and "hear" even more of the rock "talk" than do miners. Research has shown that micro-seismics can be used to precisely locate portions of a working area that are generating rock noise, and that rock noise release rate information from each area can be used to analyze its stability. On the basis of research results, microseismic systems are now commercially available and have been purchased and installed in many mines around the world. Introduction When a rock mass is subjected to changing stress conditions, such as those caused by mining, small-scale adjustments occur within the rock that release seismic energy. When this energy is in the audible range it is called rock noise. Those areas where stress changes occur are also the areas of the structure most likely to fail. Individual rock noises can be detected and analyzed to determine their precise location relative to the mine structure. Over a period of time plots of this data provide a pictorial representation of where stress changes are occurring. This is because rock noise activity tends to concentrate in those structure areas most actively adjusting to the changing stresses. Since these areas are the most likely to fail, they can be pinpointed and mapped relative to the structure. Rock noise rates, or the number of rock noises occurring per unit of time, also tend to vary dramatically before failure. Thus, the ability to locate the source of individual rock noises provides a means of determining where failure may occur, and rate counting within each area offers a means of assessing when failure may occur. This information, properly treated, can be used to avoid, control, or warn of impending failure. Successful applications of this technique have provided recent impetus to the effort of developing microseismics into a practical, reliable, and economically feasible tool. The phenomenon of naturally occurring rock noise was discovered in 1938 by Obert and Duvall (1939) who were measuring seismic velocities in mine pillars. Seismic energy other than what they were generating continually registered on their recording equipment. Further study by these researchers showed that the extraneous seismic energy being recorded was from rock noises that were being generated within the rock in highly stressed areas. Pursuing this interesting phenomena both in the laboratory and in the field, Obert and Duvall documented the dramatic change in rock noise rate before failure (Obert, 1941). They also established the fact that, in many instances, rock burst failures could be predicted by monitoring and listening to the rock noise activity in rock-burst-prone areas (Obert and Duvall, 1945). These early efforts clearly showed that microseismics had great potential as a tool for measuring or estimating mine structure stability. Extended testing, however, showed that sometimes rock bursts occurred with no apparent microseismic warning, and that at other times sharp increases in microseismic data were not accompanied by failure. Also, because precise location of individual rock noises was not possible at that time, one never knew where the failure was going to occur, only that failure near the observation point was likely. Thus, while the technique clearly offered promise, it was not considered practical then. In the mid-1960s, the Bureau of Mines undertook a new research effort to improve the microseismic technique. Major improvements were judged possible mainly because new and vastly improved electronic and system components had become available as an offshoot of space program instrument development. Thus, in 1967, development of a multichannel, broad band, microseismic system began (Blake and Leighton, 1970). Application of this system in rock-burst-prone mines showed it worked well and provided the incentive to develop methods whereby the source location of individual rock noises could be easily and directly calculated (Leighton and Blake, 1970; Leighton and Duvall, 1972; Redfern and Munson, 1982). Introduction In 1979, rumors of a developing drug problem within IMC Fertilizer's Carlsbad, NM workforce began to surface. For the next two years, a management team contacted local, state, and federal regulatory agencies that had the potential resources to help combat this apparently escalating problem. These contacts included the local police department, the county sheriff's office, the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). IMC approached each agency with two proposals. The first required the agency provide an undercover agent for placement in the company's underground facilities. The alternative required the company to provide the agent with the participating agency lending necessary legal expertise and guidance to accumulate the necessary data. MSHA regulations prohibit intoxicating beverages and narcotics on mining property. They also forbid persons under the influence of alcohol or narcotics from working in or around mines. The agency could not, however, help with this problem. The remaining agencies were sympathetic, but were unwilling to assist in implementing either program, citing legal implications. Without exception, these agencies not only refused to provide help, they discouraged any type of undercover operation, searches, drug screenings, or using dogs trained in narcotics detection. As law enforcement officials, they reasoned that any such program constitutes potential civil rights violations. An attorney advised IMC that it was not required to adhere to the same guidelines as law enforcement and regulatory agencies. It was his legal opinion that the company could conduct an undercover operation. But he recommended finding a private firm that specialized in this type of investigation. An experienced firm should have the expertise to conduct the operation and avoid the legal pitfalls that could be encountered. The management team agreed with the attorney and elected to hire a private firm. After extensive research and evaluation, three reputable companies were contacted, advised of the needs, and asked to submit a proposal. Their initial response was enthusiastic. None, however, submitted a proposal. Each was unable to locate a qualified agent willing to work in an underground environment. Privacy and civil rights At this point, it was apparent that an undercover operation was not feasible due to the lack of inhouse expertise and the lack of outside assistance. After more research, it was concluded that the only viable options left were the ones that the law enforcement community had earlier discouraged. These options included locker and personal searches, use of dogs trained in narcotics detection, and drug screening or testing. The management team evaluated the pros and cons of locker and personal searches. They concluded that if conducted properly, this approach could eliminate the problems. The potential legal liabilities, however, appeared to be tremendous. Strict guidelines would have to be adhered to in order to avoid invasion of privacy and civil rights violations. This meant announcing locker searches before conducting them and obtaining written permission from an individual before searching his person. Although the group was reluctant to lose yet another option, it was concluded that conducting searches under these conditions would be ineffective. It would also convey the message to the workforce that the substance abusers had the upper hand. This author was extremely critical of this legal opinion at the time. I have since concluded that the attorney was correct. This occurred in mid-1982. Court decisions of that era indicated the legal and political climate was sensitive to these issues.
