Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors.

Gold Fields' Mesquite mine, located in southeastern California, heap leaches low grade gold ore at an annual rate of 2.7 Mt (3 million st). Ore is crushed in a two stage open circuit and belt agglomerated prior to loading on the leach pads. Since initial heap construction in October of 1985, a number of operating practices have been modified and several agglomeration techniques have been tested in an effort to improve percolation and reduce leaching time. Findings to date are discussed.

"SUMMARY Injection grouting in rock around tunnels is used to reduce or stop water inflow. Little is known about the distribution of pressure within the rock mass during and after grouting. Instrumentation was developed to record pressure at the back of the packers inside the rock mass during injection grouting in order to improve our understanding of the process. Using this equipment measurements inside multiple injection holes during injection pumping have been made during several rounds of injection grouting in a tunnel. The data has been compared to the data recorded on the grout pumping rig and analysed to gain an understanding of the behaviour of grout injection process in the rock mass. The initial results are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Construction of a tunnel in soil or rock below the ground water table frequently results in the flow of ground water into the tunnel if the ground is permeable or fractures conductive. The injection of cement or chemical based grouts is frequently used during tunnel construction to reduce flow of water into a tunnel. Significant water flow into a tunnel is undesirable for several reasons: • there is a high cost in pumping out water over the lifetime of a tunnel; • drips and flows of water have to be diverted from the roadway or track; • where freezing conditions occur there is the possibility of ice build up and; • ground water levels may be changed possibly affecting surface water such as causing drainage of lakes and ponds, and changes in vegetation. Grout injection is most effectively done ahead of excavation to ensure that the grout penetrates the ground. Where heavy flows of water already occur into a tunnel the grout may be washed out before it sets. Normal practice in ground where water flows are encountered is to inject grout in a number of long holes ahead of the face with outer holes forming a ring around the proposed tunnel excavation – eventually forming a shield of grouted rock around the final tunnel, Figure 1. The holes may be sealed off a couple of metres into the rock with an expandable rubber plug around a pipe through which the grout can be injected, Figure 2. A one-way valve in the plug stops the grout from flowing back out of the hole when pumping stops and avoids grout flowing out through neighbouring holes. The rubber packer with a one-way valve permanently installed in the injection hole precludes the measurement of pressure down the hole when pumping is stopped."

Analysis of Coal Pillar Stability (ACPS) software, released in 2018, integrates numerous empirical pillar design techniques. The ACPS program incorporates methodologies originally available as design tools from the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH), including Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), and concepts including Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the Mark-Bieniawski pillar formula, and pressure arch loading. The design methodologies that are the basis of ACPS were developed via analysis of significant amounts of real-world data and have been standards of the United States coal industry for decades. While there are empirical factors built into ACPS, making it ideal for use in U.S. coalfields, the concepts in the program have proven to be applicable in variable mine settings, and the software was developed to allow for user-based, site-specific modifications of key design inputs. Application of ACPS to cases outside the regions for which it was developed must be approached carefully, and continuous development of site-specific data is mandatory. A case study is presented involving the application of ACPS to assess pillar stability and assist future design for an underground lignite mine in Eastern Europe. Assessment of in-mine observations, review of the geology of the lignite mine, and evaluation of specific conditions associated with a failure event resulted in “calibration” of key input factors to ACPS. Scenarios evaluated with ACPS suggest that pillar strength and overburden depth are key factors for the determination of pillar stability and design in future areas.

The Kinross DeLamar Mine has been operated for more than 17 years producing precious metals doré from ores, principally silver bearing with associated gold coproducts. In late 1995, the Stone Cabin ore body was commissioned and the site began a phased shift from silver dominance to gold dominance. The Knelson concentrator was selected to remove gold from a portion of the cyclone under- flow stream in the grinding circuit.

Continuous miners (CM) are the most popular underground mining machinery in soft rock mining, playing a dominant role in the production of minerals ranging from coal to evaporites while finding increasing use in salt and potash mines. Along with the ongoing technological advancements in the mining industry and the underground equipment, new generation of CMs offer several new features that are designed to enhance their operational capabilities and production rate. In addition to new bits and bit holders, one of the areas of improvement is the cutterhead design through computer modeling and simulation based on the full scale cutting tests. This paper discusses the state-of the-art CM technology and development of the computer models for design analysis and performance estimation of CMs. The general approach used in the modeling, along with the results of field trials for several projects will be presented.

"INTRODUCTION In his landmark Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) 2000 writing, “Theory and Design of Sandwich Belt High Angle Conveyors According to The Expanded Conveyor Technology” J.A. Dos Santos generalized the belt conveyor technology to include all possible variations and augmentations including, particularly, multiple belts along a common carrying and/or return path as is the case most notably in the sandwich belt high angle conveyor technology and belt-on-belt type intermediate (booster) drives. Figure 1, excerpted from his writing, represented the proposition of the generalized “Expanded Conveyor Technology,” abbreviated ExConTec.This formed the basis for the generalization which was completed in theory and in math before 2000 and presented by J. A. Dos Santos at the Y2K SME Annual Meeting. The writing can be found in the SME library (Dos Santos J. A., January 2000). While Figure 1 with the supporting mathematical development solved the generalization, it failed to identify the variation that would prove to have the greatest significance. As with most significant developments, necessity is the mother of invention. This is the case with the Adder Snake belt technology, the subject of this writing. BACKGROUND The concept of elevating bulk materials at a high angle using the sandwich belt concept was first introduced in 1951. That introduction did not produce any lasting success. Commercial success was achieved in the 1970s with the Loop Belt, a sandwich belt elevator of C-shaped profile developed by Stephens Adamson of Canada. The Loop Belt was and is the vital element of a conveyor based self-unloading ship system. Such self-unloading ships have had great success achieving unloading rates above 10,000 t/h with Loop Belts of width to 3,048mm (120”). Being strictly of C-profile, Loop Belts could not be adapted to the general high angle conveying path which is predominantly along a straight incline. It was the success of the Loop Belts that inspired the Dos Santos Sandwich Belts of the 1980s. These expanded the Loop Belt capabilities by producing endless elevating profiles that could take the most direct and/or conforming path between the loading and discharge points. Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor systems have seen great success through the years, with more than 200 installations throughout the world."

Tremendous strides have been made in front end loaders in the last fifteen years. Fifteen years ago a 2; cubic yard front end loader was the largest standard machine you could purchase. Today there are two commercially available 15 yard front end loaders and many 10 yard front end loaders. The estimated total worldwide market for all front end loaders over one cubic yard has increased to over 30,000 units yearly. The trend for front end loaders, in general, and for the mining market, in particular, is to larger and larger loaders. Today there are 18 cubic yard and a 24 cubic yard front end loader in prototype form. It is not inconceivable that within another fifteen years that there will be front end loaders in the 50 cubic yard class with design features quite different from today's. These larger loaders are being designed at the demand of the mining industry and the design criteria are being directed at this market area. The costs of these larger loaders will be greater per unit of capacity, and it is the intent of the various manufacturers that they will be more reliable, be easier to service, give greater availability, live longer, and cost less to maintain, than previous loaders. It is also the intent of the manufacturers to compete directly with the large mining shovel as the front end loaders become appropriately larger and more reliable. There has been some trend in this direction in the past with smaller shovels and loaders. In Figure No. 1 are data for U.S. production of front end loaders (5-6 cubic yard class and 10 cubic yard class) and U.S. production of cable operation, crawler mounted power shovels, draglines and cranes (1; to 5 cubic yard class) for the years 1965 and 1970. Two recent US Bureau of Mines studies evaluated workers' dust exposures in automated pallet loading processes. The first study involved a Bureau designed dust control system using a push-pull ventilation technique. The unit was shown to reduce workers' dust exposures by 76% during pallet loading at a ground silica operation. A hydraulic lift table was used to automate the bag stacking process. This kept the loading height constant throughout the entire pallet loading cycle. The second study evaluated different commercial, automated-pallet loading systems. These systems automatically stack the bags onto pallets, shrink wrap the pallets, and deliver the pallets to a fork lift pickup location. Results from a ground silica evaluation site indicated respirable dust samples taken were below the Threshold Limit Value (TLV) as established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

The use of frozen soil as ground improvement and temporary ground support for the excavation and construction of cross passages and adits has gained in popularity over the last decade. Frozen soil provides a number of advantages for this application such as being waterproof, structurally stable, and working well with any soil type. One of the greatest advantages is the ability for the system to be adaptable to the project geometry and site limitations. Multiple case histories illustrate that freezing can occur from the ground surface, from within the tunnel, or as a combination.

Secondary minerals, amorphous materials, and biologic entities that form on building stone can cause aesthetically unflattering changes in color and may even result in stone decay. Techniques to determine causes of such changes generally have entailed destructive sampling and often required chemical, thin section, X-ray, or other relatively slow, expensive measurements. We have found that a rapid leach of in-place stone using small volumes (50-100 ml) of very pure distilled, deionized water provides recovery of sufficient dissolved material to help diagnose stone anomalies. Water is sprayed onto the stone and collected in a nonwetting plastic pan. Ion chromatograph analysis of waters thus collected from more than 160 sites showed wide variations in concentration of anions F, Cl, NO3, and SO4. Anion analyses were made in minutes for less than $20 per sample. Cations Ca, Mg, Fe, and Sr also were detected, and analyses might be used to determine mineral sources using equilibrium computer models. Solid particles filtered from the samples can be examined microscopically to provide further information about atmospheric agents affecting the stone. The collected water can even be evaporated to precipitate dissolved minerals. Chloride values in samples rinsed from stone ran as high as up to 17,000 ppm, nitrate to 100 ppm, and sulfate to 1,000 ppm. Limited data also indicate that measurable amounts of fluoride were found in some of the rinse waters. Chlorides were most abundant in areas where the stone has become dimpled or spalled. Nitrates were generally higher near ground level, and sulfate tended to be more abundant in samples taken from higher sites or from sheltered sites. Dark-stained limestone tended to yield less soluble material than clean-looking stone. Leachable elements were higher in samples from urban areas. Most of our data are from limestone buildings, but the technique works on other types of dimension stone, man-made construction materials, and even natural outcrops of rocks. Longitudinal studies show that soluble materials vary through time and are affected by climate. This rapid, in situ leach technique, although still being perfected, shows great promise in the diagnosis of stone alteration and in the evaluation of stone treatments because it is completely nondestructive.

"Although conventional coal mine designs are conservative regarding pillar strength, local failures such as roof-falls and pillar bursts still affect mine safety and operations. Previous studies have identified that discontinuous, layered roof materials have some self-supporting capacity. This research is a preliminary step towards understanding these mechanics in coal-measure rocks. Although others have considered broad conceptual models and simplified analogs for mine roof behavior, this study presents a unique numerical model that more completely represents in-situ roof conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) is utilized to conduct a parametric analysis considering a range of in-situ stress ratios, material properties, and joint networks to determine the parameters controlling the stability of single-entries modeled in two-dimensions. Model results are compared to empirical observations of roof-support effectiveness (ARBS) in the context of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) system. Results such as immediate roof displacement, overall stability, and statistical relationships between model parameters and outcomes are presented herein. Potential practical applications of this line of research include: (1) roof-support optimization for a range of coal-measure rocks, (2) establishment of a relationship between roof stability and pillar stress, and (3) determination of which parameters are most critical to roof stability and therefore require concentrated evaluation.INTRODUCTIONRecent studies on pillar design have suggested that the assumptions utilized in traditional methods such as tributary area theory (TAT) (i.e. overburden has no self-supporting capacity, infinite pillar array, and CHILE material properties) are invalid in many geo-mining conditions (Esterhuizen, Mark, and Murphy, 2010; Frith and Reed, 2017). Although TAT is conservative with respect to pillar loading, and mine fatalities have steadily decreased since 1990, roof-falls and pillar bursts still occur and injure hundreds of miners per year (Mark, Pappas, and Barczak, 2011). Even though large-scale global mine failure has not occurred in a US coal mine since 2007, the mechanics of global and local stability as governed by the relationship between geologic parameters, mine geometry, and engineering design are still not well-constrained.Numerical methods are a highly effective tool that can be used to gain further insight into these relationships. When using such an approach, calibration to existing empirical relationships is imperative to ensure that numerical model results are realistic. In this study, we utilize the discrete element method (DEM) approach in Itasca’s Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC v. 6.0) (Itasca, 2010).DEM accounts for explicit separation and contact of individual deformable blocks (Jing, 2003) and captures how discontinuities can affect system behavior. Discontinuous and anisotropic rockmass properties are typical features in coal-measure rock which contain various horizontal (bedding) and sub-vertical (joints) fractures depending on their depositional environment, diagenesis, and historic and current stress states."

The Paranapanema Group was created in February 1996 when a group formed by the Brazilian pension funds acquired four companies dealing with nonferrous metals. The new Paranapanema Group, basically related to the tin and construction business, became the sole Brazilian primary copper producer, the second zinc producer and one of the most important producers of copper products, mainly tubes and fittings. To put together such different companies, managed before by family groups and with different cultures and principles, was and still is a big challenge. The strategy of developing and consolidating it as an homogeneous group is based in three pillars: an increase in production, quality and technological improvements on products and market mix and a permanent cost reduction program, using all the potential synergies founded.

Numerous articles have been written about the coal mine ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597 deaths. Because of this, the federal government took action and by 1910, the US Bureau of Mines had been established. This was perhaps the most significant change in health and safety for miners during the first half of the 20th century as the USBM concentrated its entire efforts in the study, research, and testing of methods totally directed towards improvement of the health and safety of the miner. After a mine disaster in Illinois, a federal law was passed in 1940 calling for federal coal mine inspectors. Then in 1969, Congress enacted the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act following a mine explosion near Farmington, WV. In 1977, the law was revised and included noncoal mining operations.

It is hypothesized that the Hotelling valuation principle (HVP) can determine the value of developed gold reserves using simple methods and easily obtainable data. This paper reports the results of an empirical test of this hypothesis. The model for the HVP is given by [V R=Cp-0(1) or V - CP-0' R(2)] where p = current spot price of gold per oz, [c] = average extraction cost of gold per oz, V = current market value of the gold in the ground (dollars) and R = gold reserves (oz). Using publicly available data from North American gold companies, we obtained data for V, R, p and c, and we ran a simple linear regression using Eq. (1) as the definition of the dependent and explanatory variables. By examining the value of the coefficients of the resulting regression equation, we can draw conclusions as to whether or not the HVP can be confidently used as an estimator of the value of developed gold reserves.

In 1992, United States mine production of barite decreased 8.5%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 36.9% and imports decreased by 61.6% vs. 1991. World mine production decreased 1.5%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, decreased 11.9% according to the Bureau. The declared value, c.i.f. United States port, of all imported crude barite during 1992 decreased from $42.35/t ($38.42/st) in 1991 to $40.09/t ($36.37/st). Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 88% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 80% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Ten¬nessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 90% was used in drilling fluids and 10% in the non-oilfield sector. This included barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. The tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1992. The average number of rotary rigs operating (717) was 16.6% less than the 1991 average of 860 in the United States. Crude barite imports were 518 kt (571,000 st), 61.6% less than in 1991. Imports accounted for 44.7% of the barite consumed (apparent) in the United States. During the year, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the United States with 67.2% of total crude ore imports. India followed with 31 %, and others with 1.8%. Mining law is essentially a branch of the law of real property. It concerns acquisition of property for extracting contained minerals, and the rights, privileges and duties that fall upon the holder thereof once the rights are acquired Accordingly, this section focuses on the procedures to be followed in acquiring state. federal and private lands, and defines briefly the nature of the rights obtained. The mining laws of Canada and Mexico are summarized, and the related subjects of minerals taxation and governmental regulation are discussed briefly. This section is not intended to be the basis for legal decisions. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with an understanding of basic principles and procedures. For a detailed treatise of mining law, reference can be made to The American Law o] Mining, a five-volume set edited by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The law changes constantly, especially that based on federal and state statutes, and the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes, regulations and case law. 2.1-PRELIMINARY LAND-STATUS CHECK Often, after completion of area reconnaissance, or perhaps after receipt of a submittal, a specific more localized target area will become of interest. Usually, an intensive exploration program comprising detailed surface mapping, sampling, geophysical prospecting and drilling will be required before the mineral potential of the ground can be properly evaluated. Before an investment of this magnitude is made, however, it is advisable to obtain rights to mine ore from the property. Otherwise, knowledge of the exploration activity might greatly inflate land values, or speculators or competing mining concerns might step in. Hence, as a general rule, a land-acquisition program should be undertaken before an intensive exploration project is begun. The first step in such a program is to make a land-status check to determine whether the subject lands are available and, if so, from whom they can be obtained and by what means. 2.1.1-BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT RECORDS In those states which contain large areas of federal land, basically (he western states, the primary informational source is the records of the Bureau of Land Management. These may t)e examined at the land office having jurisdiction over federal lands in the area of interest. The records for Montana and North and South Dakota are kept at the Billings (Mont ) land office; Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, Cliejenne, Wyo.; New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Santa Fe, N M ; northern Alaska, Fairbanks, and southern, Anchorage; Utah, Salt Lake City; Nevada, Reno; Arizona, Phoenix; Colorado, Denver. There are two land offices in California, at Sacramento and Los Angeles Records for other states are kept in Washington, D C. at the office of the Director, Bureau of Land Management.

Rehabilitation of sites contaminated by oil products and chlorinated organic compounds is a costly task which affects the planning of urban and infrastructure development. An integrated approach based on the non-invasive geophysical technology is utilized for subsurface characterization of contaminated land. In this approach the localized information, provided by chemical analysis of soil samples collected from bore-holes, is used for the calibration of the geophysical data. This information is subsequently extrapolated to the area under investigation by combining it with the geophysical results, providing thus information about pollution accumulation, contaminants? flow and pollution sources. Two case studies are presented from sites contaminated by heavy metals (Venice, Italy) and oil products (Athens, Greece). Resistivity, electromagnetic and seismic methods were used in this approach. Namely, electrical tomography, electromagnetic mapping, ground penetrating radar (GPR), multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and seismic refraction experiments were conducted. In Italy, the sections from the multichannel analysis of surface waves imaged successfully a buried channel where the pollution is concentrated. Preliminary results are also discussed from the geophysical survey in Greece where the thickness of the oil phase located on top of the water layer is 60 cm.

In order to meet federal air pollution guidelines, it is necessary to remove a considerable quantity of sulfur from many North American coals. This may be accomplished by oxidizing the sulfur to water soluble forms, followed by washing the coal. Selective oxidation of the various sulfur forms can be accomplished through the use of a variety of types of bacteria. In this paper, the various bacteria and their requirements are described, and processes using bacteria to remove coal sulfur are discussed.
