There are three broad categories in which most solvent extraction technology can be distributed?: 1) reagents, 2) equipment, and 3) systems. Reagents which are now used in commercial solvent extraction plants are of many chemical types, and each possesses certain properties which make it more economically desirable than another alternative. The equipment which is' used in solvent extraction plants for contacting the organic and aqueous phases and separating the same is varied. Most common to the industry is the mixer-settler unit which in itself, can be of varied design; but many new innovations in contacting and separating equipment have been recently introduced or are :now being studied. Each specific solvent extraction application will often dictate the type of contacting and separating equipment used. Obviously, the trend is toward smaller less expensive equipment which reduces the often expensive organic inventories necessary for most solvent extraction plants. The current thrust of .investigations in ancillary equipment is usually aimed at recovering organic from solvent extraction sludges or from aqueous streams exiting the process.6 This type of equipment helps to reduce the total organic losses from solvent extraction plants and thus reduce the operating costs. The term "systems" in solvent extraction applies to the manner in which a solvent extraction process is carried out. This manner is usually dictated by the properties of the reagent which is used, and it involves a tailoring of the equipment or the process flowsheet. Some of the things which can be tailored are: 1) The aqueous media -whether acidic or basic and what type of acid or base 2) Counter-current or single stage (co-current) contacting 3) EMF or pH control 4) Organic "crowding" alternative 5) Heating or cooling process streams Regardless of the type or extent of tailoring, efforts to do this are usually a result of the low cost of solvent extraction as a unit process.

Production scheduling is one of the most important factors affecting mine planning. A program -Mine Scheduler -that aids mining engineers with the setup of an optimum open pit production scheduling algorithm has been developed. A mathematical model for open pit scheduling that optimizes the Net Present Value of the cash flows was formulated. A simulated data is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. What's Best by Lindo Systems is used as the MILP solver in Microsoft Excel. The implementation of the algorithm focuses on problem setup, allowing users to easily evaluate, simplify, and develop the model that best fits their production scheduling.

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy's program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

Introduction Pegasus Gold's Montana Tunnels mine is a large surface gold, silver, lead, and zinc mine located 37 km (23 miles) south of Helena in southwestern Montana. Milling operations commenced in late March 1987. The concentrator achieved full production in May that year after undergo¬ing several modifications and improvements. Production for 1988 is projected to be 2.48 t ,80,000 oz) of gold, 34.2 t (1.1 million oz) of silver, along with 8.5 kt (9400 st) of lead, and 22.6 kt (25,000 st) of zinc from lead and zinc concentrates. Mill throughput currently averages 11.7 kt/d (12,900 stpd), compared to the origi¬nally designed capacity of 11.3 kt/d (12,500 stpd). Cash production costs, net of bypro¬duct revenues for the third quarter 1988, were below $3.20/g ($100 per oz). The introduction of ore to the concen¬trator marked the culmination of 12 years ex¬ploration, evaluation, and development. Initial milling operations encountered diffi¬culties with the circuit as designed. As a result, several modifications and improve¬ments were made to the plant. This article is intended to assist other companies developing projects of this type and complexity. It discusses the mine's de¬velopment from feasibility and construction through start-up. The operation, as it exists today, is reviewed including the modifica¬tions and improvements made since start-up. History The mine is situated in Jefferson County, MT within the historic Corbin-Wickes min¬ing district. Underground mining began in 1864 and flourished until the early 1900s. Between 1864 and 1900 the vein deposits in the district produced about $41 million dol¬lars worth of lead and silver ores containing subordinate amounts of zinc, copper, and gold. At various times, three smelters were operated in the area.

Land use planning is not a new concept in the United States but the emphasis has changed drastically since the early 1960's. Under the old interpretation we tried to expand our frontiers and develop our land, but as society has become more affluent and mobile the demand has grown to preserve those parts remaining undeveloped. There is something of a paradox inherent in this change of emphasis. While affluence has motivated our support to preserve the quality of the natural environment, industrial development is needed to support the affluence. Because we cannot accomplish all of each, sound planning and compromise will be necessary since it is unlikely that, the American people will want to surrender much of their life-style or their awakening environmental concern. Any industrial society, whether a goal reached or an aim yet ahead, is built largely on the use of mineral raw materials and energy, the physical base of nearly all activities and products. The standard of living which is important to us all is growing more dependent upon these minerals, metals, and energy fuels. Although reduction in consumption of raw materials may be acceptable to those at a certain economic level of a society, those who have not reached that level cannot be expected to accept a lowering of their present or anticipated standard of living.

Increased productivity in the U.S. underground coal industry has taxed pre-existing conveyor belt haulage systems. The usual remedies are costly and can disrupt production. A reduction in the belt feeder discharge rate on mobile haulage sections results in more uniform loading and reduces the spillage vulnerability. An investigation is made to determine the effect, if any, on shuttle car discharge time arising from lower feeder discharge rates. A five-section, underground mine is visualized, and belt spillage is introduced. The sectional feeder discharge rate is progressively lowered until spillage is precluded. At each level, the simulated spillage is measured and compared to the loss in face production. Methods of predicting the loss in face production from lower feeder discharge rates are discussed.

In many mining operations, particularly northern open-pit mines, large seasonal variations in grinding slurry temperature can occur. It is shown in this paper that this temperature shift can cause a winter-time loss in autogenous grinding efficiency of as much as 20Y. if it is not controlled. Laboratory experimentation indicates that much of this effect is due to increases in slurry viscosity as the temperature is decreased. An additional effect may result from changes in rock strength upon freezing, for which possible mechanisms are discussed. However, no effect clearly resulting from rock strength changes has been definitely confirmed.

North River Energy Company a previous subsidiary of Republic Steel Corporation commenced development of the Number One Mine in mid-1972. The mine is located in West Alabama and presently employs a total of 632 people. Production capabilities have increased to 1.4 million clean tons of steam coal per year with the newly purchased Longwall System. Washer recovery averages 57 percent. The seam being mined is the Pratt or Corona with an average height of 52 inches and an average cover of 540 feet. The immediate roof is laminated sandstone and the floor is composed of a hard fireclay. Total production out of the mine is provided to Alabama Power Company under a longtime contract.

About nine years ago the President's Materials Policy Co commission under the chairmanship of William Paley released its report entitled "Resources for Freedom." Not long ago the Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources under the chairmanship of Senator Kerr released a study entitled Water Supply and Demand. Both reports contained projections of future water user the report for 1975, and the Select Committee print for 1980 and 2000, It is my task to compare the two reports. In the initial letter from Mr. Kazmann arranging for thus session he suggested that I present "a critical evaluation of the Paley Report's section on water ?ten years later,? which might include a comparison of predicted and actual water-use rates and would spotlight the assumptions which lead to errors in the predictions , . ." It is possible to compare the results of both studies, and it possible to explain art of the differences that can be found between them. The remainder must remain shrouded in doubt, since the Paley Report did not give all details of the methods used in estimating the com¬ponents of water use.

Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. "A wind tunnel was designed to examine air flow, heat transfer and layering near an active fire at a working face. This tunnel simulates an active entry in an underground coal mine including an attached cross-cut of similar dimensions. A steel rectangular duct 1 ft. (0.305 m) tall, 3 ft. (0.914 m) wide and 10 ft. (3.05 m) long composes the main body of the tunnel and represents a mine entry. Air flow is generated by an exhausting centrifugal fan attached to one end of the crosscut. This fan was sized to supply air velocities based on Froude scaling. A 6 in. (15.25 cm) propane burner is used to simulate fires of various heat release rates at the working face. Thermocouples are used to map heat layering in the tunnel. Ports are installed for the introduction of tracer gases into and from sampling the system. Barometric, differential pressure, and temperature sensors are also included to monitor environmental conditions. Details about the design and testing of the system are presented including an overview of how the tunnel was scaled to accurately represent fire and flow phenomena. Finally, the proposed use of the tunnel for better understanding of mine fire phenomena and prevention is given. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines have been a concern since the dawn of mining. While technological advancements, regulations and best practices have improved both fire detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to represent high risk events. From 2006 through 2015, fires accounted for 1.06% of fatalities in underground coal mines and 0.85 percent of fatalities in all underground mines in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006 to 2015). In addition to the risk of loss of life, mine fires can cause millions of dollars in equipment damages and lost production revenue. Extensive research has been conducted on how fires occur and spread in underground mines. In addition to testing conducted by government agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) (e.g.(Liming, 2006), researchers like Verakis and Dalzell (Verakis, 1988) and Lowndes, et. al. (Lowndes, 2004) have furthered this field by studying ignitions and propagation of conveyor belt fires. While the studies of belt fires in mines are extensive, studies focused on fires at the working face are few in number. The particularly confined space and limited access to a working face, coupled with less robust, temporary ventilation controls create a unique environment that warrants special attention. Separate from studies on mine fires, the use of tracer gases to characterize flow patterns in normal mining ventilation is well established. In 1982, Timko and Thimons (Timko, 1982) outlined current and future applications of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). However, little experimentation has been conducted to study specifically how tracer gases might be used to evaluate active mine fires and the fires’ effect on the surrounding mine environment (e.g.(Lindsay, 2014). In order to better understand the dynamics of smoke layering from a fire in an enclosed space, a small-scale apparatus was designed to map smoke layering and to examine other aspects of fire behavior at a working face. In addition to studying smoke flow around an active fire, experiments will be conducted using tracer gases in order to determine how they might be used to evaluate an underground fire."

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerised generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all -too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerised reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984, Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of ore bodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metal s deposits. This paper describes a process for separating non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, copper and zinc, from other residential and industrial waste by means of permanent magnets. Although the separator may be used in the recovery of non-ferrous metals from auto scrap, most of the testing to date has been aimed at recovery of non-ferrous metals from municipal solid waste, especially recovery of aluminum from the heavy fraction of a resource recovery plant. In most resource recovery plants the incoming solid waste material is first shredded and then air classified into a light and a heavy fraction. The light fraction which contains mostly paper, cardboard, etc., can be used either as a fuel for power generation or in the production of new paper products. The heavy fraction which remains consists mostly of glass, ceramics, wood, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals may be removed from the heavy fraction by conventional magnetic separators. After primary shredding, most of the glass and ceramic is fine in size and may be screened away leaving a residue of wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals. This residual heavy fraction is the input material for the separator described in the present paper.

Ash is a material that many people leave to nature to handle. Others sometimes sweep it under the rug to be disposed of by someone else. In our business we cannot do either. In fact the American Electric Power System spends many millions of dollars in plant investment costs to collect the material, and then many more millions to dispose it. In 1965 alone the coal fired steam generating plants in., the AEP System produced approximately 2,400,000 tons of ash, enough to fill 40,000 coal cars which would extend as a single train across the entire states of Ohio and Indiana. Even though our present ash production is large, this is only the beginning when we forecast the future growth of our system. By 1980 it is estimated that our generating capacity will expand to about three times its present size, and with coal as our primary source of fuel our ash production will increase proportionately to about 7 million tons a year.

"The supply chain for coal-fired power stations involve a multi-stage network of mining units, preparation plants, blending facilities and transportation systems. Attempts to optimize the supply chain have historically been difficult due to the lack of communication/coordination between the various groups involved in coal production, transportation and utilization. In light of this issue, a new approach for globally optimizing the coal supply chain called Micro-Price Optimization has been developed to simplify the optimization problem and to provide coal producers with fundamental insight needed to improve the profitability of their operations. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each particles (or groups of particles) passing through production units. Optimization occurs whenever the maximum tonnage of positive value particles are recovered and passed to market, while the minimum tonnage of negative value particles are recovered. Elements considered by the concept include factors such as target boiler cost/efficiency, waste disposal costs, coal quality parameters, emission penalties, transportation charges, or other quantifiable impact factors. This article reviews the basis for the micro-price concept and provides a detailed industrial case study involving the determination of optimum coal qualities that need to be supplied by mine operators to feed a coal-fired power station. INTRODUCTION The performance of coal preparation plants have long been known to play an important role in determining the overall profitability of mining operations. This significance is due to the fact that the misplacement of just 1 ton/hr of clean coal to reject resulting from poor plant performance can represent nearly $300,000 per year in lost revenues for a mine producing a steam market coal (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $50/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $300,000/yr). This loss can be even more pronounced, occasionally approaching $1 million per year for each 1 ton/hr of misplaced clean coal, for operations producing high-quality coking coal products sold into the premium metallurgical market (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $150/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $900,000/yr). Detailed economic studies indicate that improvements in plant yield resulting from increases in organic efficiency have one of the largest overall impacts on mine revenue when compared to other cost centers within the mining operation. One of the first studies to show this important financial impact was reported by Norton-Hambleton Consultants (Norton, 1979). Their study indicated that an unfavorable change in plant efficiency was second only to coal transportation in terms of its impact on profitability, while an unfavorable change in the cost of underground mining was a distance third. This longstanding realization has continued to provide a strong financial incentive for coal producers to optimize the separation efficiency of their coal processing and blending operations."

A mathematical model is presented for the electrokinetic dewatering of suspensions of phosphatic clays. The modeling approach couples a boundary-element model for solution of Laplace?s equation to a recently developed constitutive equation that relates the change in solids content with applied electric field and time. The observation that the electric field controls both the maximum solids content achievable and the time required to reach that value is shown to severely constrain the application of electrokinetic dewatering strategies to an entire clay settling area. The approach, however, may be feasible for implementation as part of a continuous plant process.

Due to a tight ash constraint on the clean coal product and difficult middlings washability characteristics, a considerable amount of coal was being lost in the jig middlings at the Monterey No. 2 Mine. An investigation was conducted into circuitry to recover this lost coal with minimal effect on the total clean coal ash. A reverse two-stage hydrocyclone system cleaning at low specific gravities was selected. This system is currently recovering approximately 5.8 kg/s (23 tph) of 11.5% to 12.5% ash coal. The specific gravity of separation for the system is about 1.5 and the probable error is 0.13.

Operators of mining vehicles are exposed to high levels of whole-body vibration (WBV) and are therefore at risk of developing vibration-related health disorders. For implementing an effective control strategy, it is imperative to locate the source(s) of vibration, and the specific changes that might occur to the vibration signals during its transmission through the seats to the recipient human body. With this objective, Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility (SEAT) values of seat modules used in dumpers (n = 10) and other heavy earth-moving machines (n = 11) were evaluated in an iron ore mine. Vibration was measured simultaneously on the seat and on the cabin floor beneath the seat using tri-axial and uni-axial accelerometers. The study aims at determining the quality of seat modules of the transport and non-transport vehicles from the perspective of their natural resonance frequencies and capability of any such seat in reducing harmful vibration. The highest acceleration values were observed in the z-axis for all the dumpers. SEATrms values ranged from 78 to 133% and SEATvdv values ranged from 72 to 130% for the dumpers. For other HEMMs, SEATrms values ranged from 55 to 125% and SEATvdv values ranged from 56 to 123%. Mechanical vibration contains multiple frequency components. To understand the changes taking place to the different signals at these frequencies, 1/3 octave band analysis was carried out for the signals recorded both on the seat and the floor. There was significant attenuation (38 to 57%) at 4 Hz for three Dumper seats, whereas they resonated in the range of 1.6–2.5 Hz. The transmissibility(%) in the resonating frequencies ranged from 108 to 156%. Resonance frequencies for the remaining seven dumpers ranged from 3 to 8 Hz. The spine has been reported to resonate at 4 Hz, whereas resonance at 1.6 Hz has little significance to human beings in regard to WBV of a seated person. Hence, the characteristic resonant frequency of 4 Hz of seats as observed in the present study has the potential of causing adverse impacts on spinal health. Evaluation of SEAT factors and resonance characteristics of seats are therefore recommended to be examined while selecting a mining vehicle for regular deployment in mines.

Most legacy drift mines entered the coal reserve from outcrop and developed up-dip. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 changed this way of mining, requiring all new mines with acid- or iron-producing coal seams to be designed so as to prevent gravity water discharges from the mine. This Act requires engineered barriers to contain the mine pool. In many cases, mine layout designs focus primarily on the size and hydraulic performance of the un-mined coal barrier between the up-dip mine pool and areas where down-dip surface discharge is possible. In other cases, designs focus on preventing discharges from barriers contained within the strata surrounding the mined coalbed. This paper focuses on a detailed analysis of the factors responsible for preventing mine pool discharges to surface waters. Important factors include: mine layouts, mining methods, hydraulic head and conductivity, and geology. While the exact causes for the successes and failures could not always be determined, reasonable mechanisms are presented.
