The environmentally sound processing of metal-bearing chloride solutions plays a key role in the extraction, plating, recycling, finishing and surface preparation of metals. Additionally, many chloride-bearing waste streams must be processed to obtain environmentally acceptable products. This paper reviews the technologies used for processing aqueous metal-chloride solutions and describes the challenges that have been overcome in application of these technologies.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. Chromatography, ion exchange, and other techniques based on the interaction of solutes with solid phases offer versatility, high resolution capabilities, and near-universal potential applicability for the separation of valuable constituents in liquid solutions. The expense associated with obtaining reasonable throughput for these separations has been the only, albeit overwhelming, obstacle preventing widescale use of these methods. Attempts to devise continuous (cheaper) systems have previously resulted in moving, or simulated moving, beds of resin with complicated valving and timing sequences. These disadvantages, plus technical problems associated with the disturbing effects of non-plug flow and reduced resolution of moving versus packed beds, severely limit applicability of these systems. Over the past decade a new device has been developed that overcomes many of these problems. It utilizes a slowly (less than one revolution per hour) rotating annular bed of sorbent material with fixed-feed inlet and product withdrawal points. Numerous units of various diameters and lengths have been fabricated and operated, and a parallel effort has developed a satisfactory theoretical treatment of the device. Several simple control systems have been incorporated to thoroughly demonstrate the simplicity of operation, even for multiple products and multiplecarrier flows. This device has been developed using several metal solutions and has demonstrated its power with some of the most difficult, including the zirconium-hafnium, separations. Design equations are available for sizing units based on simple laboratory data and have been tested for units as large as 18 in. in diameter.

INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. INTRODUCTION In this paper the author will attempt to bridge from the paper work of design and engineering to the reality of implementation. Certain facets of construction are constant to a successful project, no matter the level of technical complexity. Basic to timely, low cost construction are the people assigned to the project. Construction is not accomplished by robots, computers, or speeches; but rather by people. People do however require the avail- ability of equipment and communications to properly complete the work. ORGANIZATION Good organization is the basic requirement of a well implemented construction project. For this paper the author will suggest an organization chart as well as an activity listing that together support the construction activities. There is little difference in the activities or functions needed to construct a small plant or a large one. It is a matter of how much time an individual has to spend on an activity that determines the structure of an organization. The difference between a large and small plant construction job is often described as the multiple hat versus the single hat philosophy. As an example, a resident construction manager on a small job might be the manager, the field engineer, the scheduler, the estimator, and the procurement manager. At some time during a construction

This paper presents a stabilizing controller for flotation plants which uses a quasi-multivariable technique. The controller monitors all the levels in the plant, and by anticipating interactions between various parts of the plant, is able to stabilize the plant far more successfully than the normal plant control. Once stabilizing control has been achieved, optimization of the process becomes easier and more sustainable. An estimate of the improvement in metallurgical performance is made and a singular value analysis was conducted to verify that the multivariable algorithm will theoretically control better than a collection of individual PID loops. Metallurgical results are presented to show that the improvements are attainable in practice. Control by the Mintek algorithm was alternated with normal plant control, to show that the improvements are statistically significant.

"In order to protect public safety in the event of a deliberate fire attack, underground rail authorities are increasingly considering the need to design for arson-initiated fire scenarios. Where typical design fires for modern rolling stock mean a peak fire size is reached after 12 minutes, an arson-initiated fire reaches its peak within 2-3 minutes. We present the innovations required to successfully incorporate this requirement on a recent design-build project. In stations 3D modelling is used to optimise smoke reservoir designs, smoke chimneys, station boxes and tunnel geometry to allow coordination with structural requirements. In tunnels, novel coupling of one dimensional network modelling and 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is used to improve assessment of complex fire scenarios. Finally, the impact on tunnel structures is assessed through comparison with standard time-temperature curves and risk of explosive spalling. INTRODUCTION An increasing regulatory environment and the appreciable influence that terrorist incidents have had on public safety policy have motivated the need to protect against large arson fires, especially in civil structures and public transport systems. With a greater reliance of a growing urban population on underground subway systems, design of such infrastructure is continually being reassessed and developed worldwide. Underground rail authorities are paying increased consideration to the design of fires - with properties beyond the upper regions of growth and intensity - amongst arson fire studies. Use of fire hardened materials on modern rolling stock means fires caused accidentally can be expected to develop relative slowly. However, recent experiments involving large initiating fires (as would result from an arson attack) have shown rapid fire growth rates and flashover leading to greater maximum heat release rates, Hadjisophocleous (2012), White (2010), and Lönnermark, et al. (2015). This paper describes the challenges and innovations required to complete a detailed design to control smoke from such aggressive super-fast growing fires. Computational modelling is used to demonstrate the required smoke control design by configuring the mechanical exhaust system combined with careful coordination with the architectural and structural design. The design objectives are to provide tenable egress paths in accordance with NFPA 130 (2014) and fire-fighting access. Finally, analysis of the design fire is used to inform the tunnel lining design, reducing the risk of explosive spalling, protecting the asset in the event of a severe fire."

Drilling underground in the Grasberg dewatering drifts has routinely hit water aquifers with high flow rates and pressures. Two types of holes are used. Pilot holes probe ahead of the tunnel development to intersect aquifers ahead of the face. And dewatering holes dewater rock formations that will drain water from the Grasberg pit and allow tunnel development to proceed safely. Recently, static pressures of >8.3 MPa (> 1,200 psi) have been recorded with flows from a 100 mm (4 in.) HQ core hole measured at 5,700 L/min (1,500 gpm). The waterflows can be slightly acidic, necessitating the use of stainless-steel collar gear to resist corrosion. These rates were anticipated and contingencies were planned early on to deal with these conditions. PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) established procedures to maintain the safety of the drill crews, to enable coring of the rock, and to maintain the safety of the miners driving the drifts. The collar gear controls the waterflows because these drill holes are a vital source of water for the concentrator.

Coal bump, or coal burst, is one of the catastrophic disasters in underground coalmine. Among them, approximate 80% of recorded destructive burst events were occurred in mining roadway. The bump panel is often formed by hard coal seam and hard main roof; however, the cause and course of the bump events are not understood yet. This study provides a fundamental theory for the causality and progress of a coal bump event occurred in longwall roadway. Considering hard roof condition commonly existed in bump panels, we think that the abutment pressure induced by suspended roof behind the working face is the trigger of a coal bump event occurred in the roadway. Once high abutment pressure is concentrated on the hard coal seam around the working face, the roof and the coal around the working face form a seesaw-like structure, which leads the roof in front of the working face moving upwards. The movement of roof uplifting in front of the working face is a well evidenced phenomenon in practice, namely, roof rebounding, which causes unloading of the normal stress on the roof-coal interface around the roadway. A rib coal block bump mechanical model has been developed to establish the critical equilibrium equation of the coal block. Result shows that, the force source of coal bump is the horizontal ground stress perpendicular to the rib surface; and the slippage of the coal block is caused by the unloading of the normal stress acting on the roof-coal interface. Based on the causality and consequence theory of coal bump developed in the paper, several new prediction and prevention measures have been developed, including roadway design and in-tunnel reinforcing methods. The commonly used prevention measures in present have also been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of coal bumps occurred in longwall roadways, from abutment pressure at working face forming seesaw structure to roof rebounding leading slippage of the rib coal mass into roadway, which provides a fundamental theory for coal bump causality mechanism and prediction and prevention technology.

This paper describes experiments conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of jet fans for ventilating blind headings in under- ground mines. A laboratory model of a mine heading was built by using dynamic similarity criteria, and water as the fluid medium. In order to verify laboratory test results, field experiments were designed and carried out in a full scale mine model and in a coal mine in West Virginia. Using CO, as the tracer gas and in combination with a computerized gas monitoring system, tests were conducted to evaluate jet fan performance. The results highlight the flexibility and versatility of jet fans for ventilating blind headings. Numerical modeling of a jet fan in a typical coal mine heading was carried out to evaluate the potential of computational fluid dynamics.

The limestone resources of Hawaii are derived chiefly from emerged fringing coral reef and coastal dune deposits of Pleistocene age. These deposits are most abundant on the island of Oahu and other older islands and least abundant on the island of Hawaii, the youngest. Their origin and depositional environment were influenced by glacio-eustatic rising and falling of sea levels during Pleistocene time. Dredged reef limestone deposits from two deep-water harbor projects have provided additional resources. Limestone uses include cement and lime manufacturing, concrete sand and aggregate, mad base material, beach sand replenishment, agricultural lime and golf course construction.

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

The hostile nature of industrial autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG) mill operation necessitates the need for robust and reliable online measurements. Mill slurry density is regarded as a critical variable and requires a suitable range for grinding efficiency. In this work, mill acoustic sensing of five different slurry densities (50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 wt.% solids) was investigated using a laboratory-based AG/SAG mill. The results showed that slurry density of 70-80 wt.% solids gave the highest mass of -75μm particles and similar acoustic intensity. The mill acoustical level increased continuously coupled with energy reduction as a function of increasing slurry density, an indication of potential realtime measurement.

A mineral rights holding can ultimately only be turned to account by the profitable mining of ore on that property. The evaluation of South African gold mineral rights properties must therefore be carried out by assuming that they have potential to form part or all of a future gold mine. Such analysis involves the simulation of many of the estimation procedures that are normally carried out in a full feasibility study of a new mining venture but using far less data. This paper describes in detail the evaluation procedures that may be applied to an individual property and then indicates how these techniques can be applied to a whole mineral rights portfolio.

Ring tension tests have been conducted on 229 mm (9 in) diameter disks of Grande basaltic andesite and Pomona basalt with various center hole sizes in order to study the relationship between ring tensile strength and relative hole radius (hole radius/disk radius). The tensile strength, [ ] decreases as the relative hole radius, [ ] increases. A power equation, [ ] where C and R represent the coefficients of strength and shape, respectively, adequately represents the ring tensile strength as a function of relative hole radius over the range investigated. This equation can be used to distinguish the effect of the hole size from the strength results, to predict the tensile strength of a ring sample containing arbitrary hole sizes, and to approximate the critical relative hole radius of the material tested.

Limestone and dolomite production is of significant importance to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Except for coal, more tons of limestone and dolomite are moved by the Railroad than any other mineral raw material. In the territory served by the Railroad, these materials are produced from every geologic system from Cambrian through Pennsylvanian. Some of the operations produce premium stone acceptable for high-specification steel and chemical use; at others, the stone finds application as aggregate materials and for cement manufacture. The Railroad is interested in seeing continued production from the operations it now serves, and in serving operations in a way mutually beneficial to the Railroad and to the producer. In working with producers, the importance of geologic knowledge in prospecting and development of deposits has been clearly recognized. In turn, knowledge of the economic and technological facets of production and consumption is needed for the geologists to participate with maximum efficiency.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.

A pure strain of Paenibacillus polymyxa and mineral- adapted strains are used to bring about surface chemical changes on pyrite and chalcopyrite and, thus, theirflotation. Paenibacillus polymyxa was adapted by repeated subculturing in the presence of pyrite and chalcopyrite. The surface chemical changes of bacteria due to adaptation and of minerals after their interaction with bacterial cultures are evaluated by electrokinetic and infrared spectroscopy and are discussed with reference to their flotation responses. Interaction of bacterial cells, bacterial metabolites and whole bacterial cultures affected the Hallirnondflotation behavior of the sulfide minerals. The Xanthate flotation results show that pyrite, but not chalcopyrite, is depressed when the tests are carried out after interaction with chalcopyrite-adapted Paenibacillus polymyxa. This investigation demonstrated that the surface chemical properties of bacteria can be manipulated successfully to achieve the desired effects in the flotation process.

Water & Earth Technologies, Inc. (WET), Habitat Management, Inc. (HMI) and Chevron Mining, Inc. (CMI) together developed a solution for reclaiming steep southwest facing slopes in mining Area 12C that have historically been prone to excessive erosion, low vegetation establishment and continuing maintenance. Area 12C is located in the east wing of the Chevron McKinley Coal Mine, 27 miles northwest of Gallup, New Mexico, on Navajo Nation land administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Mining in this area was completed in May of 2007. Challenges encountered for this reclamation project included the need to reclaim graded material on a slope of 18-35% with southwest facing aspect, the presence of undisturbed rock outcropping that needed to be avoided during reclamation, the operational need to limit bulldozer pushes and the inability to import or export additional materials for construction. Two different reclamation alternatives were considered for Area 12C. The first alternative would use a traditional reclamation approach including three levels of draining terraces designed to convey water on a 3% slope to a single riprapped down drain. Terracing and down drains have been used to reclaim areas with similar terrain conditions elsewhere at the McKinely Mine and have failed to adequately control erosion (Williamson 2006). Terrace overtopping and down drain blowouts have been issues in maintenance and functionality for the mine. Maintenance routines consist of cleaning out terraces where they have filled in with sediment and repairing damaged or blown out terraces and down drains.
