Research workers from the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives at the Mont Chateau Lodge, Morgantown, W. Va., on May 30-31, 1973, to discuss the current status of methane control in eastern U.S. coal mines. The opening remarks, the eight technical presentations, and the discussions of the members of a government-industry panel are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the control of methane in coal mines. In addition, an introduction has been added to present the background of work in this field.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States, and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of marine vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in each of these categories are not devoted wholly to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move agricultural products as well as crude minerals and mineral fertilizers, as ore/bulk/oil carriers also do. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to moving nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral and nonmineral cargoes. They include general cargo carriers, full containerships, partial containerships, roll-on/roll-off ships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels, such as sue, draft, crew requirements, and type of propulsion system, as well as fuel costs, have an undeniable influence on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and quality and types of material moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy. Unfortunately, comprehensive data in this regard are not available.

Fiber-optic technology is progressing rapidly, including the development of fiber-optic sensors for many applications. These sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, light weight, small size, high bandwidth, and freedom from electromagnetic influences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of fiber-optic technology to monitor mine atmospheres. This report describes a methane monitor based on differential absorption of infrared light. The monitor can detect methane concentrations as low as 0.2 vol pct as far away as 2 km via fiber-optic cable. The upper range is 100 vol pct methane. Since the system requires no electrical power within the mine, it is intrinsically safe.

The Wood mine area was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in -1941 by a magnetic survey and a gravitational survey. Surface trenches were excavated, and diamond-drill holes were bored at the strongest anomalies developed in common by the two surveys. In the last century', several widely separated bodies of chromite with some magnetite had been exploited in a 'serpentine belt near its contact with schist. At one time this district held a virtual monopoly on the production of chromite. Known ore bodies now are exhausted. Owing to the relatively high specific gravity of chromate compared to normal rocks, a gravitational survey was run to determine which magnetic anomalies were worthy of diamond drilling. Linear feet of trenching totaled 1,710 feet. Ten holes were diamond drilled, which totaled 2,272 feet. The log of the drilling is shown in the text in a tabulation of drill-hole data.

The face area of a continuous mining section of an underground coal mine is the most dangerous area in the mine. Workers there are at nearly twice the risk of death or disabling injury than those in other parts of the mine. Despite extensive training of miners and improved equipment and mining methods, fatality and injury rates have remained constant during the past few years. It is clear that advanced research is necessary to apply new technologies or modify work procedures to solve the continuing problem of the loss of lives and the numerous injuries at the mine face. A U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is developing a Reduced-Exposure Mining System (REMS) that relocates personnel operating the mining machinery at the face away from the hazards to a nearby haven of relative safety. REMS uses proven technologies of computer automation and robotics to help control the operation of the mining machines at the face, while personnel are moved away to a nearby, safe control room. In this protected, well-ventilated environment, they can supervise or control the operation of the machines while viewing what the machine is doing using video and graphic display monitors.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. One of the primary objectives of the Bureau of Mines solid waste utilization program is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste called raw refuse scrap. In this investigation, several types of scrap of differing quality, including refuse and turnings, were melted in a 1-ton electric-arc furnace in various combinations to produce steel in noncritical (construction) grades. In-formation on furnace operation and on the behavior of tramp and alloying elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to produce acceptable steel from a variety of steel scrap. Although some scrap is routinely used in steelmaking, it was found that up to 50 to 55 pct of the scrap charge can be ref-use, provided it is combined with higher quality scrap. The chemistry of the steels was generally acceptable, and all of them were rolled without difficulty. The specification (ASTM 615) for the steels produced was grade 40 or grade 60, containing 0.30 or 0.40 pct C, with mini-mum yield strengths of 40,000 or 60,000-psi, respectively. Most of the steels met the specification requirements. In-formation on typical microstructures of some of the steels is included. The composition of some furnace dusts showed high levels of Sn, Pb, and Zn.

This information circular is written is response to the marry requests for information on the recovery, or reason for poor recovery, of fine gold by the amalgamation process. Checking Gold Content Experience has shown that in many cases error has been made because the true told content of a particular sample or deposit was not known. Fire assays of representative samples give accurate results and should be considered final in determining the gold content.

In seeking substitutes for such critical metals as chromium, cobalt, and nickel, the Bureau of Mines investigated techniques for shape-casting titanium in rammed sand molds. Castings were made in olivine, garnet, chromite, and, for comparison, zircon. It was found that commercial-grade castings up to 31 lb (maximum capacity of furnace) could be made in zircon or olivine molds if a zirconia mold wash was used. Castings up to 4 lb could be made in chromite molds, but heavier castings suffered from some mold-metal reaction. Garnet molds were found to be unsatisfactory for castings of all sizes because of gas blows and rough surfaces. In other tests shell castings of acceptable quality were produced in water-glass-bonded zircon and olivine molds up to weights of 8 lb, but chromite molds were unsatisfactory because rough casting surfaces were caused by mold-metal reaction. Unlike the currently used commercial processes, neither the rammed-sand nor the shell-molding processes developed by the Bureau of Mines generate noxious fumes at any step.

"INTRODUCTION In September 1943, the Bureau of Mines conducted a limited program of churn drilling on the Winskell property in the Shullsburg area of Lafayette County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort war being made to increase the production of metals necessary for the war program.Drilling described supplemented a previous drilling program conducted by the Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. The results of both programs encouraged subsequent investigation by the Cuba Mining Co. and eventual development of the Andrews mine.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. 1. In 2002, a total of 763 nonmetal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Examples of nonmetal mining operations include the mining of clay, trona, barite, phosphate rock, gypsum, talc, gemstones, and pumice. Nonmetal mines comprised 5.3% of all mining operations. • Nonmetal mining operations are located in all but nine states or territories (Alaska, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands). • Mines producing common clay comprised 29.2% (n = 223) of all nonmetal mining operations.

"The ""safety bonus"" in metal mining is a sum in addition to the regular wage, paid to foremen or bosses for keeping the accident rate down to a specified minimum. It has been used with success for some time by certain companies as a regular part of their safety work. It is desirable from the employer's point of view in that the desired results in accident reduction must be accomplished before the bonus is earned; and from the standpoint of the recipient, in that he receives a reward for the additional effort which he has put forth in order to earn the bonus.While this paper relates to the safety bonus as applied in the metal mining industry, the bonus system discussed herein will apply equal well to coal mining, oil-field work, and other mineral industries.Various estimates have been made as to the percentage of accidents that can be prevented through physical safeguards, adoption of safe working methods, and other safety measures which can be initiated and carried out wholly through the management or the safety department. This percentage will always be a vari¬able according to the local plant and conditions. But all who have been engaged in accident prevention agree that such work alone cannot bring the accident fre¬quency down to where it should be, and that it is very necessary to work directly with the workmen, in an effort to make each individual do his share in making the work safe. In this latter phase of the work, the boss who has immediate super¬vision of the men is the one who can do the most, since he is in daily and frequent contact with the men while they are at work. In the metal mines, the shift and stope bosses are the key men; in the oil fields, the ""tool-pushers"" or sub-foremen, and the same applies to all industries. So it becomes necessary to keep these sub-foremen constantly interested in accident prevention, both because they are in personal touch with the men and because they are responsible for production and hostile to any plan which they think will interfere with their output. In large organizations it is the shift boss who represents the company and its policies to the man on the job."

A computerized napping system was developed by the Bureau of Mines to provides procedures for the rapid and inexpensive display of coal reserve data. Mapping system output consists of two types of maps, point distribution and contour (isopleth), which can be produced for data (coal analyses) associated with a point location (outcrop, drill core, or mine samples). These locations can be in the form of latitude and longitude or Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid coordinates. The mapping area can range in extent from as small as a single county to as large as a multistate region. The mapping system utilizes programs developed at Harvard University, in addition to several modifications developed by the authors. The primary advantage of this system is that it enables the display of a rapidly changing data base and computerized map generation without the intermediate steps of digitizing and overlaying to produce base maps. The mapping system is applicable to any regional mineral reserve or resource study for which point location data are available. Included are example maps of the distribution of data points and contouring for sulfur content of the Upper Freeport coalbed in this western Pennsylvania demonstration area.

This report is the 17th of a series originally issued annually, and more recently bienially, to acquaint the reader with the work of the Division of Explosives Technology, Federal Bureau of Mines. It differs from preceding reports in that its material is presented in two parts: Part I reviews briefly the overall activities of the Division during fiscal years 1955 and 1956;4/ part II presents in abstract form, the publications of the Division during that period. As it is not unusual for research completed in the course of one report period to be published only in the following period, the Bureau believes that the present approach will give a more accurate presentation of its work for the period considered. Pulverized high-volatile A bituminous coal was gasified with oxygen and superheated steam in a pressure-gasification pilot plant equipped for slurry feeding. The minimum ratio of water to pulverized coal that could be pumped satisfactorily as a slurry was about 1 to 1. Heating this slurry produced a suspension of coal in superheated steam having a steam-to-coal ratio greater than the 0.3 to 1 proportion that is considered optimum for pressure gasification of pulverized coal. A steam separator removed enough steam to provide ratios down to about 0.5 to 1, but a 0.3 to 1 ratio was not achieved. Gasification of Sewickley coal produced a synthesis gas containing about 36 percent H2, 46 percent CO, and 13 percent CO2, Gas output, gas composition, and coal and oxygen requirements were Virtually the same as for a pilot plant equipped for fluidized-coal feeding. Typical results from the slurry-fed plant at 300 psig were carbon gasified, 95 percent; coal requirement, 34 lb/M (thousand) std cu ft CO + H2 produced; oxygen requirement, 365 std cu ft/M std cu ft CO + H2 produced. The results showed that the two feeding methods are equally satisfactory from the standpoint of gasification. A choice between a fluidized-coal gasification process or a slurry gasification process depends on considerations relating to the coal-feeding phase itself, including capital and operating costs, manpower requirements, safety, and flexibility of operation.

The Bureau of Mines devised a technique to recover a Zn-Pb concen-trate from a geothermal brine. More than 99 pct of the Zn and Ph was precipitated by treating the brine with H2S and controlling the pH with lime. Recycle of the sulfide precipitates increased crystal size and resulted in easily filterable products. A typical sulfide precipitate contained 53 pct ZnS, 8 pet PbS, 24 pct MnS, and 15 pct FeS. Addition of sulfide as FeS or CaS was not effective in precipitating Zn and Pb, but Zn in the brine was selectively removed with a strongly basic ion-exchange resin. A proposed flowsheet for metals recovery is discussed.

The objective is to provide effective training on refuge chambers for underground coal miners. This training will increase knowledge about how to teach miners to operate, transport, and inspect a refuge chamber; what to expect psychologically and physiologically inside a refuge chamber; and how to decide when to use a refuge chamber. Background During 2006?2007, several disasters occurred at U.S. underground coal mines, resulting in 28 fatalities. These disasters led to new approaches to mine safety and health, as well as new federal regulations. One new technology mandated by federal legislation is the refuge chamber. Refuge chambers are movable shelters that are either made of steel or inflate from a steel skid as a tent. They can potentially save the lives of miners during an underground mine emergency by providing breathable air, food, water, and a safe environment for up to 96 hours. Because the refuge chamber is a new technology, recommendations, information, and training products are greatly needed.
