Shear zones are tabular tructures which tend to occur either discordantly within, or concordantly along the margins of, competent rock masse uch as plutons, sill or flows. They contain deformed equivalents of their host rock and are common sites for gold mineralization localized in tructure oriented y tematically relative to the shear zones and internal linear fabric. Apan from genetic implications, hear zone analysis proves useful in exploration for this type of deposit because the zones are generally wider and more continuous than associated mineralization and because there is an element of predictability to mineralization geometry (i.e. vein orientation. plunge).

On the basis of research of relations among the market participants the analytical model has been created which connects the price of industrial good at stock exchange with volume of sales and the stock of the sellers and buyers, Also a model was developed for assessment of these parameters of the market status by the actually fixed stock exchange and general market indicators. The composition of these models made it possible to create reliable system of short-term price forecasting for commodities or base metals up to one quarter ahead. Imperfectability of creation a model for reliable price forecasting by purely statistic methods (by the "black box" principle) was shown. A model of price behavior qualitative forecasting till one quarter ahead has been developed, which determines the probability of reaching in future of the given level as well as of the price maximums and minimums, Optimal values of threshold probability were determined for forecasting the future price maximums and minimums securing the maximum profit from the forecasting system application for commercial activity. The developed system of forecasting was identified for primary aluminium at the period of 1990-2003. The system was tested daily during 20 months period for speculations on 3M primary aluminium forwards at London Metal Exchange with high commercial result.

This paper reports on research examining disclosures from mining companies regarding their water usage in the Macquarie and Lachlan catchment areas, both parts of the Murray-Darling Basin in New South Wales, Australia. The objective of the research was to assess whether this disclosure is sufficient to allow communities to determine whether mining companies are complying with mining conditions of consent and abiding by the requirements of their water licencing agreements. These requirements are then compared to the water reporting requirements of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Water Accounting Framework for the Minerals Industry (WAFMI). Communities are concerned about whether the mining industry?s use of water will have impacts on their livelihoods and lifestyle and thus require information concerning the quantity of water that will be extracted, how much water will be left for other stakeholders and whether the mining will affect water quality. This is an archival study. It has involved examining relevant publically available information released by mining companies and government regulators and determining if this is sufficient to meet the needs of the local communities. Additionally, it has involved looking at information indirectly provided by mining companies, via the use of intermediaries. Further, information availability concerning basic water accounting and regulatory breeches and whether such information is available at the mine site level has been considered. It is found that while NSW legislation places very little reporting requirements on mining companies, the development consent conditions for new projects and extensions to existing projects are quite significant and should be sufficient to meet the needs of local catchment residents though such information is not always easily accessible for the layperson.

CANADA is not an old country we are just now planning to celebrate our lOOth Anniversary. Nonetheless, we have already developed some well-established traditions. One of the minor traditions is the standard speech on the need for more research and development in Canadian industry. I am sure that you have all listened to it many times -I certainly have given it more than once. Much as I am tempted to honour this tradition by repetition, I shall only give you a thumbnail sketch of the ancient address for the benefit of any unfortunate visitors who have not heard it before, and also to provide a base for some further ideas that I want to leave with you. Briefly, the traditional story is that, for a variety of historical and environmental reasons that I shall not attempt to describe in detail, research and development in Canada has grown up in a pattern that is ill adapted to foster the expansion of our manufacturing industries. The story continues by saying that research in the universities is of excellent quality but that we are very short of money to meet the expanding needs

This paper compares an integrated evaluation approach to decision-making with more traditional sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. The primary objective is to highlight the differences in NPV that can arise from using these evaluation methods in a top down and bottom-up approach. Results from three resource scenarios, derived from sampling a "virtual" ore body (reality) on grid spacings of 75m, 50m and 25m, are analyzed and compared.

The mining industry consumes huge water volumes and the waste streams typically contain sulfate, which has caused problems to many operations around the world. Discharge of sulfate to fresh waters is being restricted as the sulfate load increases salinity and causes problems when sulfate is reduced to toxic H2S by natural bacteria. To reduce fresh water consumption, internal water recycling had become a necessity in metallurgical processes. However, the recycling causes accumulation of sulfate and other components in water, causing problems to process performance and increases scaling in piping and equipment. Few technically feasible water treatment processes exist in the market that can be applied to decrease sulfate concentration below gypsum saturation level: biological sulfate reduction, membrane separation, ion exchange, evaporation and chemical precipitation. Some of these technologies are effective for treating wastewater, but there is typically a highly concentrated sulfate fraction left requiring still further treatment. Outotec has developed a sulfate removal solution, Outotec Ettringite process, which allows flexible control of residual sulfate concentration, thereby opening doors for increased water recycle within processes and control of the sulfate in discharged waters. In this article the results and benefits of this novel process along with examples of operating costs are presented.

"The closure of the iron and steel making plant at Consett in Durham in 1980 marked the end of an era-a long era in the world's iron and steel making history. Iron had been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century.The paper describes sites in the area that first worked the bloomery process and then, in the 16th century, as did most of Europe, graduated to the blast furnace process. The main emphasis is on the early introduction of coal to iron making at the end of the 18th century and the use of the steam engine to render integrated sites possible.IntroductionIron has been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from clear evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century. Like many other countries, the United Kingdom benefitted from the visits of foreign observers, such as Jars, Svedenstierna, de la Houliere and Dufrenoy, who left detailed records. The main sources of iron ore were the coal measures, with rider ores from the lead vein s in Alston and Weardale, and carbonate ores from shale horizons in the Carboniferous limestone. Good coking coal was available from West Durham and reasonable coal from the Tyne valley and Northumberland limestone. Limestone was plentiful."

IT IS most appropriate that this first Memorial Lecture should be given in the Province of Quebec, near the site of the first metallurgical industry in Canada. At La Forge, about seven miles north of Three Rivers, iron was produced in 1783. We are told that the early settlers obtained most of their iron-ware -stoves, kettles, axes and ploughshares -from this smelter, with its foundry and forge. The Canadian copper industry also had its beginnings in Quebec when, nearly 100 years later, in the 1880's, several small copper smelters were erected in the Eastern Townships. Later, in 1899, Canada's first aluminum smelter was built at Shawinigan. From these small beginnings has grown a vast metals industry, the export value of its products being only exceeded by that of our forest products -newsprint, pulp-wood and lumber. As we are not a large country in terms of population, our domestic capacity to consume is often small in relation to our developed capacity to produce.

Of the twelve known ore zones on the Sunro property, acquired by Cowichan Copper Co., only the "B" and "C" orebodies of the "River Zone" had been explored sufficiently to indicate the grade and tonnage. The "B" zone was selected for initial production. The portion of this orebody above the main adit level was developed for horizontal-ring, longhole mining. Ore from the stope would be scraped directly to the coarse ore bin. The lack of a suitable mill site on surface, as well as the 8,000-ft. tramming distance, led naturally to the installation ground. I N November, 1960, a lease was obtained by Co-wichan Copper Co. Ltd. (N.P.L.) from Sunro Mines Ltd., covering the main ore (River) zone of the Sunro property. A total of twelve zones had been located on the property. Nine of these lay within the leased area. "Significant increases in mill liner life and plant availability can be achieved by following guidelines that have evolved from over twenty years of practical experience with autogenous grinding (A0) and semi-autogenous grinding (SA0) mills. A0 and SA0 mill liner functions, performance criteria, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures are reviewed. Operating practices that can lead to accelerated wear and breakage are discussed.IntroductionEfforts to improve the performance of liners for autogenous grinding (AG) and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills began as soon as the modern, large-diameter versions of these comminution machines were first intalled in commercial plants twenty years ago . While concentrators with conventional circuits were typically running at 95010 or better mill availability, many of the new autogenous and semi-autogenous circuits were struggling to achieve 80% availability. Liner maintenance, which involves not only material and labour costs but also loss of production, was quickly identified as one of the major reasons for downtime.Today, liner designs and materials have evolved to the point where virtually maintenance-free liner life of two to three years is possible in autogenous mills and one year in the more severe operating conditions encountered in semi-autogenous mills. Of concern, however, is that hard-won lessons from the past sometimes seem to be forgotten or ignored during the design of new mills and the operation of existing mills. As liner suppliers, we are often confronted with performance problems that could have been avoided by applying well-publicized guidelines for liner design and materials selection.This paper provides an overview of AG and SAG mill liner functions, criteria for evaluating performance, designs, wear-resistant materials and maintenance procedures. Also, operating conditions that can lead to accelerated wear and liner breakage are discussed in detail."

ZEBALLOS is a relatively new mining camp. It is on the west coast of Vancouver island, approximately 195 nautical miles northwestward from Victoria. Previous to 1934, a small amount of placer gold had been recovered from the Zeballos river and tributary creeks. However, it was not until the winter of 1934-35, when shipments of high-grade gold ore were made from the property of the White Star Gold Mines, Limited, that lode gold mining really began. Since then, several new mines and many promising prospects have been found. Milling in standard sized mills only commenced late in 1938, when the 75-ton mill of Privateer Mines, Limited, and the 50-ton mill of Spud Valley Gold Mines, limited, were first turned over. The most striking feature of the camp is the high-grade quality of the ore as usually mined. At one property, the ore along a drift 650 feet long has ranged from 5.8 ounces per ton to 17.5 ounces, over average vein-widths ranging from 8.3 inches to 14.5 inches in selected blocks along the drift. One . high-grade shipment of 196.6 pounds of ore from the same property contained 142.877 ounces of gold. The present paper deals only with that part of the area in which mining operations are most active, namely the main Zeballos River valley and its tributaries, Spud and Goldvalley creeks. Abstract-The Amazon region is characterized by the development of deep chemical weathering represented by widespread lateritic covers and soils. Two distinct periods of laterite formation can be distinguished: mature laterites from the Eocene-Oligocene (and locally from the end of the Cretaceous), and immature laterites from the Pleistocene. The older laterites occur on plateau landscapes, and the younger ones on widespread hilly to flat lowlands. Both types show complete or truncated profiles, generally covered by deep yellow to brown topsoils. The mature laterite profiles contain high concentrations of gibbsite and/or aluminum phosphate, whereas the immature ones are poor in these minerals. The Amazon region is rich in mineral deposits related to lateritic profiles. Some mineral deposits are of primary origin but were concentrated to economic grades by lateritic processes. The most important ore deposits are of iron, aluminum (bauxite), kaolin, manganese, gold, nickel, copper and phosphate. These are mainly related to mature profiles. The wide spectrum of ore deposits and mineralogical and geochemical complexity of the Amazon laterites has been promoted by: (1) the prevalence of ideal conditions for laterite formation throughout much of the Tertiary; (2) the presence of varied basement lithologies due to contrasting geological environments; and (3) a variety of epigenetic alteration types. The lateritic profiles show a well-developed ore zonation which is related to specific lateritic horizons. Iron and gold deposits occur in the ferruginous horizon, which is nearest the surface; the central aluminous horizon hosts bauxites, aluminum phosphate, strontium and gold; and the lower clayey horizon contains deposits of manganese, nickel, copper and kaolin. Resistate phases which residually accumulate throughout entire profiles include titanium (as ilmenite and anatase), chromium (as chromite), tin (as cassiterite), yttrium (as xenotime), and niobium (mainly as ilmenorutile). Epigenetic alteration, caused by swamp environments developed above truncated lateritic profiles, has led to the formation of high-grade kaolin and refractory bauxites. The laterites in the Amazon region contain most of all known kinds of ore mineralization related to laterite processes.

Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several 'industrial minerals', including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

Introduction The increasing importance of the gypsum industry in Canada is evidenced by the fact that the production has increased from 473,129 tons valued at $809,632 in 1909 to 1,205,846 tons valued at $3,622,007 in 1928, an increase of over 155 percent in quantity, and of 347 percent in value, in the 20-year period. Although the export trade in crude gypsum still forms a large proportion of the industry, it is gratifying to see that the home consumption is steadily increasing, and while the percentage of the crude gypsum mined that is manufactured into the calcined products in the country is only 16.8 per cent, its value is practically 50 per cent of the total gypsum production of the whole country. It is to be hoped that each succeeding year will see an increase in the amount manufactured in Canada, and, with the steady growth of the country and a serious endeavour to capture a part at least of the world market in gypsum products, the outlook for the industry is decidedly promising. The value of gypsum as a commercial commodity has been known from the time of the early Egyptians; in fact its value for certain purposes has been known so long chat the date of the discovery of its peculiar properties is unrecorded.

INTRODUCTION THE present study, based largely upon phase equilibrium diagrams and other theoretical considerations but nevertheless addressed primarily to the practical metallurgist, has been undertaken with a view to discovering what light can be thrown upon the role of alumina in slags. According to Liddell (23), "alumina apparently acts as .a base if much silica is present, as an acid if the silica is low, always as a nuisance." Newton and Wilson (26) state that .alumina "is never added intentionally, as it makes the slag viscous, and is generally an undesirable constituent of slags". Camp and Francis (3) sum up their views by saying, "alumina is seldom used intentionally as a flux, but it is present in nearly all raw material, hence unavoidable". One has only to read The Function of Alumina in Slags, by Henrich (I3), and the very extensive discussion that followed the presentation of his paper, to realize that, before the days of phase equilibrium diagrams, it was a very serious question indeed as to whether alumina should be calculated as a basic, acid, or neutral constituent. Opinions then differed widely, as well they might; today, even though no categorical answer can be given to the question raised, the function of alumina can be at least partly clarified by a study of the fundamental work done by the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington and by certain universities in both America and Europe. It will be a source of gratification to Canadian metallurgists and ceramists to know that work of this type is now under way in the recently organized Physical and Crystal Chemistry Section of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, and that results of practical value have in fact already been obtained.

In this paper, it is investigated how different types of automation would affect the safety for workers in asphalt paving. The risk for the workers on road construction sites is consistently high in comparison to the average risk of the working population. Automation has been suggested as an alternative for improving the safety in roadside construction assuming that removing workers will inherently eliminate the risk of them being injured. In this paper, the potential for improving the safety using automation is analyzed in detail. By investigating accident statistics and understanding the type of accidents that appear, several different automated functions for increased safety are proposed and described. Based on available statistics, it is possible to estimate the safety benefit, as the reduction in fatalities, for several of the proposed functions. The highest safety benefit would be achieved by automating the road traffic driving through the work zones. This has the potential of reducing the total number of road worker fatalities with over 30 %. In addition, it would decrease the number of road traffic accidents in work zones. Automation of construction machinery and dump-trucks also has the potential to increase the safety.

"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."
