This paper presents the evolution of the planning, scheduling and mining practices at the Yilgarn Star underground. The paper will concentrate on the principals of æjust in timeÆ and the impact of such practices on mine planning and scheduling and subsequent development and production. The principals of æjust in timeÆ were developed to minimise the impact of creep and time dependent failure of the ground in the ore and hangingwall zones. These zones are characterised by altered schistose material with inherent weak rock strengths compounded, at depth, by the maximum principal stress of the virgin stress field approaching the UCS of the rock mass. Yilgarn Star underground has and continues to develop the æjust in timeÆ methodology to ensure the continued viability of the mine. The mine continues to use longhole open stoping mining methods to ensure high levels of productivity with minimal dilution and at an acceptable cost of production.

In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.

The performance of the Renison tin concentrator was assessed in detail for two arrangements of the three available ball mills. With two mills used for primary grinding and the third for regrinding table tailing, the concentrator recovered 65.3 per cent of tin in the three tin concentrates produced by tabling, vanning and flotation at a calculated overall grade of 37.5 per cent tin prior to batch dressing. In the second arrangement one mill was used for primary grinding and two mills for separate regrinding of table tailing and sulphide concentrate. The metallurgical effective- ness of the change was somewhat obscured by unintended changes,i.e. an increase in the assay of the fresh feed from 1.38 per cent to 1.1+6 per cent tin and unresolved changes in the sulphide rougher flotation and tabling. However, using the results from a detailed size by size analysis of the behaviour of ore components in appropriate parts of the plant, it proved possible to show that, had the two unintended changes not occurred, up to 5 per cent

In a narrow vein mining scenario, employing preconcentration technology underground not only results in reduced transport and handling costs but may allow alternative mining methods to be implemented, improving overall productivity. Using processing technology underground is not a new concept with underground crushing and screening operations being quite widely utilised. With advances in processing technology over recent years, there are now a number of robust processing methodologies in existence that are capable of performing separation of ore and waste at a relatively coarse size. Many of these technologies are readily adaptable to the underground environment and if employed could result in a number of cost and productivity benefits.Assessment of the oreÆs suitability for preconcentration technology is the first step in harnessing these potential savings. Chromite was recorded among the rare minerals in the natural beach sand concentrates on the coast of Northern New South Wales by Whitworth(l) in 1931, and the commercial production of zircon and rutile from these beach sands has yielded concentrates of ilmenite with small amounts of chromium. The chromite is a detrimental impurity in the utilisation of the ilmenite, and the difficulties that attend the separation of the small amount of chromite from the ilmunite have raised suggestions from time to time that chromite occurs with ilmenite in composite grains. The absence of such composite grains and the nature of the chromite grains has been indicated by the following mineragraphic examination of magnetic concentrates containing chromite which were prepared by the C.S.I.R. Ore Dressing Laboratory, Melbourne University, from ilmenite concentrates from beach sands at Norrie's Head, County Rous, New South Wales and Stradbroke Island, Queensland.The magnetic concentrates from each locality are divided into five fractions, and the No. 1 concentrate is the most highly magnetic and the tailing the least magnetic. The investigation of the explosion characteristics of nine Bowen Basin (Central Queensland) dust samples in a suitable coal dust explosion chamber using a new dust concentration probe provides several advances in the area of coal dust explosibility testing. The 20 litre explosion chamber, of novel design, uses rotation of the main body of the chamber together with air jets for dust dispersion, and allows testing of different types of explosion initiators and analysis of the explosion characteristics of coal dust/methane mixtures of varying concentrations.A new development was a dielectric dust probe for the measurement of coal dust concentration. A capacitive micrometry technique was successfully adapted to measure dust concentration. The system uses a ratio-transformer bridge for measurement of small changes in a capacitive probe designed to sample a representative volume. The device is accurate, and is capable of operating in the hostile environment within the explosion chamber.The explosion chamber and dust probe characterise the explosive potential of coal dust samples by determination of the dust lean limit concentration in varying mixture with methane. Plots of lean limit points obtained in this way present an explosion curve for each sample which indicates the potential of the coal dust/methane to explode under the conditions of initiation in the chamber. The explosion curve obtained for each sample presents a unique signature that appears to reflect the physical and chemical characteristics of the dust.The results from this series of laboratory experiments appear to provide a useful index and indicate potential areas of interest for future research.

For many crushed aggregate producers will the finest fraction minus 4 mm represent a problem. The fine material will fetch a much lower price than the coarser products, and may even be difficult to sell in some markets. The blasting operation will strongly influence the generation of fines after both blasting and crushing. Drill hole deviation together with the drill hole diameter, powder factor and velocity of detonation are the most important blasting parameters with regard to the generation of fines. Drill hole deviation is often ignored, and many operators will just reduce the drilling pattern in order to avoid hard bottom and an excessive number of boulders. The paper presents a technical and economic analysis of how drill hole deviation will lead to an increased generation of fines in crushed aggregate production. The analysis shows that the loss of sales revenues will be much higher than the extra costs for drilling and blasting caused by compensating for drill hole deviation by putting in more holes.

The preliminary modifying factors for future stope design in the Southern Mine Area of Olympic Dam consisted of only a single, arbitrary value of Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Sloughing (ELOS). In order to improve this, a study was conducted which developed a more comprehensive methodology for assigning ELOS, Equivalent Linear Lost Ore (ELLO) and Equivalent Linear Fill Overbreak (ELFO) to individual stope faces based on geotechnical and mining parameters. The approach used was to look at the simple cases, which were classed as vertical stope walls in good ground (RQD 80-100%), divided into wall orientations (North, South, East, West). The stope walls were also split based on the blasting practice used (toeing, parallel or a combination of the two). The expected ELOS and ELLO from these ‘base cases’ are then modified by parameters which have historically been found to affect stope performance (Hydraulic Radius and Q’). The size of the effect found in the historical data determines the ELOS / ELLO applied. The methodology was summarised in an easy to use flow chart and was applied to all of the proposed stope shapes for the Southern Mine Area and summarised per mining block. This allowed each iteration of the mine plan to be assessed in terms of overbreak (both rock and vertical fill exposures) and underbreak.

Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

Warrego copper ore characteristically contains 0.05-0.2% bismuth, which on upgrading produces a concentrate of approximately 1.3% bismuth. Early smelting of this concentrate (1973) was accomplished in a flash furnace (eliminating 92% of the bismuth in the con- centrate) and Top Blown Rotary Convertors (eliminating 85% of the bismuth in the matte). However 1.3% bismuth was considered the max- imLun bismuth level that could be treated. Geological evidence indicated that the bismuth level in~the copper ore would increase and that the bismuth level in the Warrego ore would be 0.3-0.7% bismuth. Treating these ores would produce a copper concentrate with bismuth levels far in excess of those accept- able to the smelter and still produce low bismuth content blister (limit 0.03% bismuth).

A combination of high precision 40Ar/39Ar and U-Pb dating has been used to determine the age of hydrothermal minerals and host rocks in a number of Lachlan Fold Belt (LFB) gold deposits in New South Wales, Au4 ralii In particular, this investigation demonstrates that the UAr/ Ar technique of K-Ar dating can be used to determine the timing of mineralization in Palaeozoic systems.A close temporal link between mineralization and Late Ordovician to Early Silurian magmatism is indicated by the dating work. Hydrothermal sericite from the Goonumbla p8rph gy Cu deposit and Glendale Au prospect yieldsAt/ Ar step heating ages between 437.9 ¦ 1.1 and 441.2 ¦ 1.1 Ma (16), and4 minjrnum age of about 425 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of hydrothermal amphibole from the Browns Creek Au-Cu skarn deposit. Hydrothermal aluniI8 frog the Gidginbung epithermal Au deposit yields reset 44 Ar/ Ar ages of 401.0 ¦ 1.3 to 417.3 ¦ 1.3 Ma (16). U-Pb dating by ion microprobe on magmatic zircons from the vicinity of the Goonumbla and Gidginbung deposits gives ages of 438 ¦ 3.5 Ma (2 6), and 435 ¦ 2.5 Ma (2 (7) respectimly, W a minimum age of 435 Ma has been obtained by Ar/ Ar dating of magmatic phases from volcanic rocks adjacent to the Browns Creek skarn deposit. Magmatic episodes near the Sheahan-Grants gold skarnpost give ages of 479.2 ¦ 1.1 and 467.9 ¦ 4o1 by 'Ar/ 9Ar dating of magmatic amphibole. Most Ar/3yAr age spectra show the effects of partial Ar loss at between 360-420 Ma, probably due to heating caused by granitoid emplacement.The radiometric dating work in this paper suggests a restricted metallogenic epoch in the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian LFB, NSW, of similar duration to that found in the Andean margin and the western Pacific island arcs around the Pacific Rini.

I he Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company (ER&S) has oper- ated a copper smelter at Port Kembla, NSW since 1908. The feasibility of modernising the smelter was recently studied and external influences were shown to have a substantial impact on the project economics. Profita- bility is determined by the relative magnitudes of treatment charge income earned from processing raw materials and the operating costs incurred. Treatment charges are usually denominated in U.S. dollars and are deter- mined by market forces in the world copper industry. ER&S is no different from other Australian manufacturing industries in that it must maintain its competitive position by controlling costs. The modernisation project seeks to achieve this through new technology and improved labour Productivity.

In panel/block caving mines, large amounts of information are collected at the operations. This information includes grades and extracted tonnage, fragmentation, lithology, design of stopes and main infrastructure, geotechnical information, overbreak progress, seismicity, numerical modelling and many other mine variables. To improve the reliability of the production plan it is required to integrate the mine data into one platform. In this paper, the logic of a new technological platform is presented for analysis, modelling and design in panel/block caving mines. The platform includes an acquisition system for mine data and geotechnical information, a back-analysis module for calibrating statistical models and a module of visualisation of the results. The application and benefits of the platform is illustrated for mining induced seismic risk for panel/block caving mining operation. In recent years the need to provide increased ventilation to improve environmental conditions rather than to dilute firedamp has led to increasing interest in the use of recirculation. Present UK mining law prohibits recirculation in ventilation, but it has been permitted selectively by exemption granted by Hm Inspectorate of Mines and Quarries. The conditions of use imposed by these exemptions to safeguard the safety and health of miners are examined in detail, dealing separately with primary and auxiliary recirculation systems.

"The Braemar Iron Formation is atypical ore when compared to the current magnetite ores being processed. In attempting to process and economically recover the vast quantities of iron ore stored within the Braemar Iron Formation, æshifting the paradigmÆ is required. The formation has a low Davis tube recovery (DTR) grade of 15 - 20 per cent, which is much lower than magnetite ores processed in Australia. Despite this, by thoroughly testing and understanding the ore characteristics, it is found that the Braemar ores have significant advantages to processing than the harder banded iron formation (BIF) and taconite resources.The Hawsons magnetite iron ore resource has been known from the early 1960s when CRA explored the area. The grade was low and the Pilbara region discovery lead to the development of high-grade direct shipping hematite ores. Carpentaria Exploration (CAP) rediscovered the magnetite whilst undertaking multi-commodity exploration in the Broken Hill district during 2009. Shifting the paradigm away from grade the advantages of processing this ore are achieved by having an extremely low waste to ore ratio, lower Bond work index, lower abrasion levels and high-grade magnetite concentrates with little impurities other than silica. While developing the Hawsons Iron Project (HIP) it became more apparent that a positive business case is achievable when the following factors are exploited: very large resource - the resource is contained within one pit the rock fractures easily along grain boundaries - ideal for cheap impact crushing of the ore the ore is extremely soft, with a Bond work index of 6.3 - 8.0 kWh/t all major infrastructure required is readily available - rail, power, access and port the mine is in close proximity to Broken Hill - rich mining history and skill set available the resource contains many billions of tonnes of magnetite mineralisation.Shifting the paradigm by selecting equipment suitable for processing soft ores and not hard BIF or taconite ores and taking locality and available infrastructure into account may change the way people approach new low-grade resources in future.CITATION:Koenig, R L and Broekman, K T, 2013. A relationship is predicted between oxidic nickel in slag, oxygen in matte and Ni/Fe ratio in matte after the examination of thirty sets of contiguous matte and slag samples taken from industrial nickel smelters. Oxidic nickel in slag is found to increase with increase in oxygen content of matte of constant Ni/Fe ratio, and it is proposed that the relationship may be used to predict nickel solubility in slag from a knowledge of matte composition alone.

Synthetic calaverite (Au Tez) has been prepared and its physical properties checked.Simple flotation tests indicate that the recovery of calaverite should be possible using n-butyl or sec-butyl xanthate collectors under approximately pi I neutral conditions with a copper sulphate activator.Roasting calaverite in air at moderate temperatures resulted in its decomposition with the formation of elemental gold and tellurium dioxide.In alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions, both gold and tellurium tend to dissolve. At pHs less than 14, about 50 per cent of the tellurium remains as elemental tellurium; however in very strongly alkaline solutions, essentially all of the tellurium is converted to the soluble tellurite ion (TeOl-).However, even at high pHs, the solubility of gold in the cyanide solution is still low due almost certainly to passivation effects.

Degussa's PAL-system (peroxide assisted leach) has been proven to be more economical than the conventional cyanidation technique. Significant in- creases in the gold recovery have been reported, accompanied by savings in cyanide. Accelerated extraction kinetics and modified reagent demands necessitate a redesign of the conventional cyanidation plant. The South African Osprey Mine is presented as an example of a successful PAL-application. Based on the plant and laboratory data it is shown that the redesign of the flowsheet can be an important factor for the effectiveness of a metallurgical plant. In the case of the Osprey Mine, the PAL-technology all ows a modification of the current preoxidation-ClPcircuit to two separate CIL-plants to treat run-of-mine ore and old tailings dumps. A doubling of the throughput is possible without enlargement of the plant. This innovation in the field of gold extraction, the combination of the PAL-process with a redesign of the metallurgical plant, can be considered as a basis for a more profitable gold mine.

The Skybolt is a new bolt concept, point anchored with resin in large diameter holes of specific sizes 38 mm and 45 mm. The new design achieves the optimum annular spacing required for mixing the resin anchor components which is essential for optimum resin bonding of the bolt to the surrounding rock. This paper explains the load transfer mechanisms between bolt/resin/rock, unique to this bolt concept. It compares the pull-out test results to those of paddle and expansion shell type bolts, and highlights the versatility of Skybolt over existing, currently used, rock support systems and the benefits mine operators can achieve when using the Skybolt.
