In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. This study represents a part of comprehensive research aimed at integrating nickel into a thermodynamic database constantly developed at Pyrosearch. The behaviour of Ni in calcium-ferrite slags is considered. An integrated approach combining experimental and thermodynamic modelling methods has been employed to predict phase equilibria in the NiO-CaO-FeO-Fe2O3 system under oxidising conditions and in equilibrium with the metal FeNi phase. The compositions of liquid slags and coexisting solid solutions have been determined through the analysis of equilibrated and quenched samples by electron probe microanalysis technique (EPMA). The research results are presented in the form of liquidus projections on the corresponding phase diagrams, considering both oxidising and reducing conditions. The solubility of Ni in spinel, dicalcium ferrite and calcium oxide as well as solubility of Fe and Ca in Ni monoxide, have been examined under several atmospheric conditions. Additionally, the compositions of the NiO-FeO monoxide in equilibrium with metal phase have been studied. The experimental data not only support the outcomes of thermodynamic modelling but also validate the parameters of the applied thermodynamic models, thus confirming the reliability and accuracy of the integrated approach.

Carrapateena is a copper-gold sub level caving operation located in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. One of Australia’s largest undeveloped copper deposits, the project will be a 4.25 Mtpa underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years (OZ Minerals, 2017). First concentrate production was achieved in December 2019, within the Iron Ore Copper Gold (IOCG) hematite breccia complex. The Carrapateena orebody is overlain by 500 m of barren sediments of the Stuart Shelf, which hosts two aquifers. The cover sequence is dominated by shales, quartzites and sandstones in order of thickness. The cover sequence presented challenges to the mine ventilation system as a result of highly variable rock strengths. On this basis, the site developed the first vent rise, Vent Rise 5 (VR5), earlier than required as a means to test the empirical stability assessment. Assessment for VR5 was completed in 2017, with the mine yet to develop through much of the cover sequence. Due to the geotechnical data available at the time, it was anticipated that break out would occur within the vent rise walls as a function of the low strength Woomera shales. VR5 was developed to 4.5 mᴓ in late 2018. The timing of the VR5 development enabled the site technical team to calibrate empirical stability factors for the assessment of future vent rises. At the time of writing, four additional vent rises have been successfully developed to a diameter of 5.5 m. No significant overbreak has been observed within any of the vent rises. This paper is intended for geotechnical practitioners designing large-diameter vent rises in geological environments similar to the Stuart Shelf where a similar approach to vent rise design may be warranted.

The Caval Ridge Mine is an open cut coalmine and located within the Bowen Basin region in Central Queensland, and commenced mining and processing operations in 2014. A number of geotechnical challenges for managing dragline bench and lowwall stabilities have been encountered in both southern and northern pits over the years. Southern Pits contain steep seam dips of up to 15° (27 per cent) whilst the northern pits also have shears below pit floors. Geotechnical guidelines to manage the risk of dragline bench failure and lowwall instability have been developed and improved since these geotechnical challenges were identified. The dragline guidelines include dragline tub offset distances from the 60° Line (SDL) or buttressing thickness for different seam dips greater than or equal to 8°. The low wall stabilisation guideline established floor disruption widths and depths depending on seam dips and presence of floor shears to known depths of up to 3 m. As mining operations advance, lowwalls have remained stable until floor disruptions were fired, then returned to stable soon after the shot. The maximum distance of lowwall cracking with blasting has been as far back as the second spoil peak (the prestrip truck dumps construction limit). These failures need to be eliminated to allow the operational flexibility and haulage benefit of constructing the prestrip truck dumps behind the first spoil peak, while maintaining no risk to personnel or equipment. The floor shear depth was verified by collaborating with the exploration teams and taking advantage of the already planned 8-inch coal quality core holes, drilling them an extra 5–10 m past the coal seam floor and locating the shear presence. With this continuous improvement effort, no lowwall failures have occurred during floor disruption firing from the second strip after the new floor disruption depth guidance have been applied. This paper documents the processes for developing these geotechnical guidelines, operational implementation, and outcomes. Operational applications over the years confirmed that these guidelines have effectively managed the dragline bench and lowwall failure risks related with the steep seam dips and floor shears in this open cut coalmine.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

Geotechnical models developed during the open pit mine planning stage are generally three-dimensional (3D) in component to capture the spatial variation in geological, structural, hydrogeological and geomechanical conditions. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the 3D geological, hydrogeological and structural models are simplified to two-dimensions (2D). This paper demonstrates this simplification, through referenced case studies, can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being analysed and/or a conservative Factor of Safety (FOS), or Strength Reduction Factor (SRF), being calculated, leading to a false sense of stability. There exists a paradigm that the FOS calculated using 2D limit equilibrium (LE), or the Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) calculated using 2D finite element (FE), modelling methods is generally conservative, ie lower, than the true FOS. However, this assumption that 3D FOS, or 3D SRF, is always higher than 2D FOS, or 2D SRF, is not always correct (Chen and Chameau, 1983; Bromhead and Martin, 2004; Herza et al, 2017; Pyke, 2017; Dana et al, 2018).

This paper concerns a pragmatic approach to a problem that is common to many operations in the mining industry: how, over the short-term, to grasp the extent and distribution of long-term financial risk from environmental causes and reduce these risks strategically, in order to maintain stability and flexibility in the operations. Surprisingly, many companies operate without an environmental master plan or tools that can help managers measure and reduce financial risks. Such companies may be subject to unknown unacceptable financial risks from environmental causes. While many companies have some kind of internal system of environmental standards, it is often the case that such systems have uneven or limited effect, and offer no opportunities for visualising, measuring or managing aggregate financial risks from environmental causes. `Aggregate risks' are defined here as the calculated total expected financial costs to a company, or a subdivision of a company, from environmental causes at nominated operations over a defined time period. Aggregate risks take into account the type and magnitude of an environmental problem set, the likelihood of occurrence, and the time frame during which the problems will develop or solutions are required. For the large corporation, the 'amount of' aggregate environmental risk is a statistic that can be managed, along with other financial parameters, at the corporate level to improve the stability and predictability of operations, and protect the interests of shareholders. This paper concerns development of a management framework and a tool for the large corporation that responds to the need for managing aggregate environmental financial risks. The logical framework proposed to overcome the need for strategic vision is the Environmental Master Plan, and this is described in the next section. The analytical tool proposed to measure aggregate risks and provide relevant data and insights to managers, is called an Environmental Risk Management Information System, and its mechanics are described in a subsequent section.

Gipronickel Institute JS that is a Research and Development Centre affiliated to the worldclass Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company, and Outokumpu Technologies AB (Boliden Contech AB) have jointly developed the reconstruction project of Pechenganickel metallurgical operations using a two-zone Vanyukov furnace. The international expert group appointed by the Nordic Investment Bank has examined the project. The project financing should be partly executed by the Norway government. Current annual rate of sulfur dioxide emissions is 100 000 t. The aim of the project is to reduce it to 12 000 tpy. Pechenganickel Combine is owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel. Currently it produces nickel high-grade matte from sulfide copper-nickel concentrate with up to ten per cent MgO content. The existing production is in accordance with the following flow sheet: agglomeration û electric furnace smelting with matte production û converting in horizontal converters. Annual production capacity is about 36 000 t of nickel in high-grade matte. Converter gases report to sulfuric acid production. The principal results of studies on high magnesia materials smelting in two-zone Vanyukov furnace, engineering solutions, and technical and economical parameters are offered.

I am very pleased to be here at this seminar on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology for the extraction of gold as I am always interested to hear about any new development in any aspect of gold ore processing. We can expect to learn a great deal from the papers to be presented over the next few days. It is not my purpose to give a detailed description of the CIP process nor to give a complete historical review. However, in this opening address it was thought appropriate that I should mention some historical features and some technical factors to set the scene for subsequent papers. AMC has completed a number of backfill options studies, including several in recent years for large, three-dimensional orebodies involving total extraction by longhole open stoping with backfill. This has led to the development of a thorough review methodology that assists in the selection of the most appropriate backfill system and the most economic mixes to achieve the required performance. A recently developed design tool has simplified the calculation of backfill strengths for various exposure dimensions and automatically determines strengths incrementally over the height of a stope. Using a generic orebody with a plan dimension of 120 m wide by 360 m long, several different stoping layouts have been analysed to determine the effect of stope dimensions and sequencing on backfill strength requirements. This has been done for stope heights from 50 m to 300 m, in 50 m increments. The required strengths have been calculated in slices and summarised for each stope in four equal layers. The average strength requirement for each layout at each stope height has been compared graphically. For all stope heights, a panel stope layout that minimises the proportion of primary stopes results in a lower average strength requirement than grid layouts on a checkerboard pattern. However, for very high stopes, smaller plan dimensions become more economic. The increase in required strength with stope height is non-linear, making taller stopes potentially more attractive. The main cost factor in most backfills is the rate of binder addition, which is closely related to the strength required. By choosing a layout that minimises the backfill strength requirement, significant savings in binder addition rates and overall costs can be achieved. These must, of course, be weighed against other factors to determine the optimum stoping layout and backfill system.

The Bau Goldfield lies in the southwestern corner of Sarawak in East Malaysia. Evidence of past mining in the form of open pits and adits can be found over an area of 250 sq kin, centred on the township of Bau. Chinese were mining gold in the district as early as 1820. The Bau Goldfield so far has produced approximately two million ounces of gold, from alluvial deposits and over 50 hard rock mines. The largest single producer was the Tai Parit mine (700 000 oz) which was operated by the Borneo Company from 1898 to 1921 and by a local Malaysian family from 1991 to early-1997. Over the past ten years, gold resources totalling around one nullion ounces have been delineated through systematic exploration using modern techniques, with the bulk of the resource hosted in two deposits (Jugan and Pejiru).Triassic to Jurassic andesitic volcanics and coeval intrusives are the oldest rocks that crop out in the Bau Goldfield. These igneous basement rocks are unconformably overlain by 500 m of late Jurassic, massive, micritic limestone which in turn is overlain by a 1500 in thick flysch sequence, composed mainly of shale. Basement rocks and limestone are exposed along the hinge of a ENE-striking anticline that passes through the Bau district (Bau Anticline). A NNE-striking belt of Miocene granodiorite porphyry stocks and dykes also passes through the Bau Goldfield. All of the known gold deposits lie within 5 km of this zone of intnisives, with a concentration of deposits at the intersection of the intrusive hell with the Rau Anticline.

Alliance Gold Mines was established in the early part of 1994 to acquire the assets of Diamin Resources NL at Maldon, Victoria. These comprised Exploration Licence 3422, some 20 sq km in area and enclosing the main part of the Goldfield, and a CIP plant - with a nominal capacity of 250 000 tpa - which was commissioned in 1988. Between 1988 and 1992 Diamin had mined - by open pit methods - and milled around one million tonnes of low grade gold ore, and recovered 55 000 ounces of gold. By 1992 the known shallow resources had been depleted. Historical gold production from the Maldon field is about 1.75 million ounces, at the surprising average recovered grade of 28 g/t. The last significant mine closed in 1926: since then there has been no comprehensive exploration program, though Lone Star Exploration NL tested part of the field for shallow open-pittable resources in the 1970s and Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd carried out widely-spaced drilling on the three main reefs from 1979 to 1982. Diamin (1983 - 1994) commenced a careful compilation of old mine records and newspaper clippings, and drilled several cored holes.

The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd have developed the Python Underground Processing Plant for the concentration of gold and sulfide ores. The Python plant has an established flow sheet including fine crushing, screening, gravity separation and flotation which aims to concentrate the valuable minerals (gold/sulfides). The aim of the plant is to achieve high valuable recovery into a mass yield of 10 - 30 per cent to reduce the amount of material that is needed to be taken to downstream processing. This paper examines the test work protocol for testing an ore to assess its suitability for the Python flow sheet. This paper will discuss the test methods employed to determine crushing requirements, continuous gravity recovery and flotation performance and how the results relate to Python design for the comminution, gravity and flotation circuits. Results from past test work will be discussed.

Underground mining for gold began in Beaconsfield in 1877 and development of the Tasmania Mine saw the sinking of multiple shafts, including the Hart Shaft over the ensuing 35 years. The mine closed in 1914 at a depth of 455 m due to prevailing economics, eventually reopening in 1999. The modern mine closed in 2012 after extending the mine from a historical depth of 455 m to the exhaustion of the modern Ore Reserve at a depth of 1210 m. West Tamar Council took over the lease for the immediate area around the Hart Shaft as an extension of the adjacent museum. The Hart Shaft and above ground structures became a significant drawcard for visitors. Tasmania was affected by sustained wet weather during May, June and July of 2016 which caused severe flooding and significant Statewide damage. This uncharacteristically intense wet weather caused saturation of the ground surrounding the Hart Shaft. Eventual shaft failure was first identified in August 2016. The failure of the shaft occurred at approximately 50 m below surface and resulted in a plug of material completely blocking the shaft. Significant surface subsidence affecting the surface infrastructure ensued. Due to the unstable nature of the surrounding material, it was determined that addressing the failure above the blockage would not provide a permanent solution to prevent the continued flow of material into the shaft. Many options to stabilise the shaft were considered, however it was assessed that a concrete plug in the shaft in competent ground at a depth of 100 m below surface and well below the blockage, would provide the only long-term solution. Man-entry was considered unsafe. The solution to access ultimately entailed filling the entire shaft with granular fill up to 100 m depth to act as formwork for a concrete plug. The rising mains at 400 mm and 250 mm diameter, which remained in place in the shaft, provided the avenue for placing the fill and ultimately, the concrete plug. Once the plug was in place the remainder of the shaft up to the underside of the blockage and over the top of the blockage to the surface was successfully filled with a combination of more granular fill and flowable cement stabilised sand. The Hart Shaft and surrounding above ground infrastructure was successfully stabilised and re-opened to tourist access. CITATION:Johnson, D, Turner, A and Hills, P, 2018. The exploration of Mount Isa Mines' new copper source will require the development of a five kilometre 4.7 x 5.5 metre blind decline commencing 1000m below the surface and extending to 1600m below the surface. With virgin rock temperatures approaching 60¦C, the ventilation strategy represents a complete departure from any previously used at this mine, in that refrigeration becomes essential. The use of direct water to air cooling techniques has become commonplace in mines throughout the world and their application is being adopted at Mount Isa Mines. A heat load simulation routine has been implemented to allow for the design of refrigeration requirements, as well as to aid in the selection of diesel or electric equipment. This enabled planners to determine the size of a surface based refrigeration plant. Future refrigeration demand for expansion into the ore production stage has also been investigated.

The banded nature of the quartz veins which form the Empire lode at the Golden Cross mine, is perhaps their most striking feature. Petrographic studies show that significant differences occur between the bands in terms of textures, quartz grain size, calcite, adularia and kaolinite content, and the form, concentration and mineralogy of sulfide phases. The 818Oqu i values of individual bands within the vein material range from 7.3-10.9%x. Calculations show that the 818Oqäa,u values can be adequately explained by temporal variations in the system temperature, boiling and/or variations in the systems fluid/rock ratios.

In response to the increase in consumption of galvanised steel for automobiles in the last decade and the problems associated with remelting larger quantities of galvanised steel scrap, a process is being developed to separate and recover the steel and zinc from galvanised ferrous scrap. The zinc is dissolved from the scrap in hot caustic using anodic assistance and is recovered electrolytically as dendritic powder. The dezinced ferrous scrap is rinsed and used directly. The process is effective for zinc, lead, and aluminum removal on loose and baled scrap and on all types of galvanised steel. The process has been pilot tested for batch treatment of 900 tonnes of mostly baled scrap. A pilot plant to treat continuously loose scrap, with a design capacity of 48 000 tonnes annually, has been in operation in East Chicago, Indiana since early in 1993. The first 450 t of scrap degalvanised in the pilot plant have residual zinc below 0.01 per cent and sodium dragout below 0.01 per cent. Use of degalvanised steel scrap decreases raw materials, environmental compliance costs, and opportunity costs to steel- and iron-makers. Availability of clean degalvanised scrap may enable integrated steel producers to recycle furnace dusts to the sinter plant and EAF shops to produce flat products without the use of high quality scrap alternatives such as DRI, pig iron, or iron carbide. Recycling the components of galvanised steel scrap saves primary energy, decreases zinc imports, and adds value to the scrap. The quantities of zinc available by the year 2000 from prompt and obsolete automotive scrap will approach 25 per cent of zinc consumed in the major automotive production centres of the world. Zinc recycling from galvanised steel scrap, either before or after scrap melting, will have to be Implemented.

The Australian Mineral Industry has to compete on world markets, so its mineral research has to be aware of overseas developments, it must be of world class, and it must utilise as many ideas as possible in order to solve those problems that uniquely affect Australian minerals processing. North American mineral and resource research may be taken as a guide to world government, industrial, contract, and entrepreneurial research trends and ideas. A number of interesting findings are noted that may guide Australian developments and strategies for the future, in minerals research and exploitation.

Multiple data sources can be fused to improve boundary modelling in stratified deposits such as the banded iron formation (BIF) hosted deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. Accurate boundaries are essential to produce high quality geological models. Initial models are based on the widely spaced exploration hole data. This creates a high level of uncertainty in areas between the holes, with different interpretations of the boundary equally probable. Including directional information collected in these holes in the models can reduce the number of possibilities. Including data collected during mining, such as blastholes and bench measurements, can further guide the model. This research demonstrates a Gaussian Processes based method of fusing these disparate data sources to better inform the boundaries. Our results demonstrate that when only exploration points are used the model creates a smooth boundary with minimal variation between the holes. Each additional data source refined the model and added additional detail to the boundary. For the blast data, the new detail projects down to the bench below the current bench to allow for a better prediction before mining commences on that bench.
