A gravel pack completion is described which, in addition to sand screening, permits the exclusion of water and gas from the oil production. A gravel pack composed of alternate layers of different particle sizes is employed which has horizontal but not overall vertical permeability to drilling mud. A packer is run on the tubing and set in the screen member, around which the gravel layers are placed. The hydrostatic pressure of a mud column prevents the entry of fluid above (or below) the level of the packer. The producing level may be changed by raising or lowering the tubing. Vertical coning is controlled by replacing the mud column with oil and continually injecting oil into the sand section above (or below) the packer. Three well histories with this completion are described in detail. Statistics on the first 100 completions of this general type are given. INTRODUCTION Gravel pack type completions have heretofore been almost exclusively for the purpose of preventing sand production. This paper describes and presents well data on a gravel pack procedure which is primarily a selective completion method. Although complete sand screening is achieved, the exclusion of gas and water is the primary objective. The application of this procedure is therefore not limited to unconsolidated sands. Application to hard sand or limestone reservoirs is equally feasible. GRAVEL PACK PROCEDURE Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the gravel pack procedure employed. The gravel is placed by means of the frangible disc type dump bailer shown by Fig. 1.' This bailer has its lower end closed by a plate glass or steel rimmed cement disc. This disc breaks when the bailer passes over the liner allowing the gravel to be deposited around the liner. The liner employed is usually 2 3/8 in. to 2 7/8 in. OD and 1.995 in. or 2.07 in. ID (ID of 2-in. tubing or 2-in. line pipe). Two tvDes,. of slotted sections have been employed. One type employs horizontal hacksaw cut or milled slots of about 1/32 in. width opposite the producing section. The other type employs the same type,. of horizontal slot. but slots are placed in groups of six at intervals of about 8 in. A cage composed of half round vertical bars, spaced apart, is then welded to the pipe over the slotted sections. This liner has the bottom end closed, usually by bull plugging. The upper end is closed, while placing the gravel, by a cap which is held in place by means of a shear pin. This cap has a mandrel attached to it which extends downward inside of the liner to within a few inches of its lower end. The top of the liner cap is formed to fit a releasing type wire line core barrel overshot. The liner is lowered to bottom on the wire line by means of this overshot and released. The length of the liner is usually suffi- cient to extend to about 20 ft above the highest level to which gravel is to be placed, the upper end of the liner always being in the casing. The dimensions of the liner and bailer are such with respect to the casing size that the bailer will always pass over the liner. After releasing the liner the bailer is run to bottom. The lithium solubility limit in solid aluminum was determined by the use of micro-graphic techniques. The solubility limit thus established was shown to be a true equilibrium by checking the reversibility of AlLi phase precipitation and dissolution around the equilibrium temperature. The experimental results fit a straight line by plotting log N(LI) against 1/T. The metallurgical reasons explaining the lack of agreement among previous investigations are discussed. THE solubility limit of lithium in solid aluminum was determined by Shamray and Saldau1 by micrography and by Grube et al.' and also Voss-Kiihler- by measurement of electrical resistivity. Since the addition of lithium induces extremely small changes in the aluminum lattice, X-ray techniques could not be employed for this purpose; in fact, the addition of lithium does not cause an expansion of the lattice as might be expected from a consideration of atomic radii, but causes a small contraction from 4.040 to 4.037A3, 4 when the solvent aluminum is saturated with this element. An analysis of the results from previous investiga-tions'" shows that with improvement of investigation techniques the solubility limit tends toward a lower lithium content. Again, some of the author's own experimental results on the action of atomic hydrogen on A1-Li alloys seemed to indicate that the solubility of lithium should be much lower, i.e., about 0.3 pet at 300°C: instead of 1.15 pet, the lowest published value.4 For the foregoing reasons it was decided to investigate this problem. The aluminum and the lithium used for this purpose were of the highest purity. The lithium solubility limit was determined by metallographic techniques, in particular by the use of a reagent especially developed for the purpose of revealing the AlLi phase. The solubility limit thus determined was shown to be a true equilibrium by checking the reversibility of AlLi phase dissolution and precipitation around the equilibrium temperature. All of the experimental work was carried out in 1951 at the Centre d'Etudes de Chimie Metallur-gique at Vitry, France, under the direction of Georges Chaudron.

Knowledge of the thermal capacity of gases is of great importance in making metallurgical calculations. The metallurgist is frequeqtly called upon to investigate and determine furnace efficiencies in which the heat carried into or out of the furnace by gases is a large item in the heat balance. Not only do such problems present themselves in the determination of furnace efficiency, but also in the study of the application of heat in accessory apparatus, such as stoves, regenerators, waste-heat boilers, driers, etc. The thermal effect of the use of excess air in the combustion of fuel, the theoretical temperatures of combustion, the quantity of heat in hot blast at various temperatures, the effect of hot blast on furnace temperatures, are a few more examples of frequently occurring calorific problems involving gases. So many are the applications of the data on the heat capacity of gases that the subject merits careful study. The heat in a gas maybe due to its heat of combustion, if it is a combustible gas, and to its temperature. The latter is called its sensible heat and is the heat absorbed or evolved by a gas as its temperature is raised or lowered. The heat of combustion of gases is well established and is commonly known. The values can be found in almost any modern treatise on metallurgy. The sensible heat of gases has not been so well established because it is in most cases a function of the temperature, and the values of specific heats of gases over a wide range of temperatures have only recently been determined. It is the purpose of this paper to deal with the sensible heat of gases. - The calculation of sensible-heat capacities1 from specific-heat equations is a comparatively long and tedious operation. The results described in this article are based On field work conducted during the periods April-May, I939, and May-July, 1940. The United States Potash Co. is mining potash on Government land under a permit from the Department Of the Interior and the geophysical investigation was completed under a cooperative arrangemerit made between that company and the Conservation Branch Of the Geological Survey. The writer, a member Of the SeCtion of Chemistry and Physics of the Geologic Branch, was assigned to this investigation. Four definite objectives were in mind for the geophysical work in the studies over the salt deposits. The first was to determine the measure Of success that could be attained in this type of work with the resistivity methods that were to be employed. These methods had been introduced into the work of the Conservation Branch by Benjamin E. Jones for the investigation of dam sites, and have been used under his direction by the author for such work. If the method proved to be be an effort was to be made to contour the top of the salt beds and also the other formation boundaries known to be present in this area. Salt-water aquifers were to be studied in an effort to determine their boundaries, and an attempt was to be made to delineate the potash-bearing beds. Earlier Studies Others have made, and reported, restivity studies over saliferous deposits in different areas. Friedell and Messrs. Schlumberger2 reported geophysical work performed in the discovery of the salt domes of Alsace; Carrette and Kelly? described the geology of the same area. Leonardon and Kelly' published a resistivity curve obtained over the Hettenschlag dome, and a further discussion of this same area was given by the Messrs. Schlumberger6 in a communication. Messrs. Alty6 described studies on salt deposits in which the single-probe method was used. sinerez7 mentions that electrical methods were tried over salt deposits in Spain. Geoffrey and Charrin8 show a resistivity curve obtained over marl, gypsiferous marl and salt which is similar to that obtained over the New Mexico salt deposits. Kelly9 reported resistivity work performed with the ground Comparaor of Zuschlag over the salt deposits near Syracuse, N. Y., where the Salina formation is at a depth of 700 to 800 ft. Some structural studies on the potash basin of Alsace are described by Poldini.10 Another single-probe resistivity study, made over salt deposits in New Mexico, is briefly described by Heiland,11 through the courtesy of Harry Aurand, of the Midwest Refining co, Geological Features OF Area Covered The area discussed in this paper is in Eddy County, southeastern New Mexico, a

Introduction Self-tuning regulators are a class of controllers built around the concepts of sampled data theory, and are especially suitable for implementation in a digital microprocessor or minicomputer control system. The algorithms used are distinctly different from those based upon analog control techniques and include automatic adjustment features which permit them to adapt to unmeasured changes (in, for example, ore grindability) or process nonlinearities (as exhibited by cyclone classifiers). They are also designed to handle transport lags in a simple manner, for example, anticipating the effects of a variable recycle rate on particle size distribution. The advent of distributed control systems will encourage the exploration of these techniques in the minerals processing industries, and particularly for improving the control of comminution circuits, which are especially energy intensive. This paper outlines some current work in progress on this topic. Background Those engaged in the practice of process control have long had two philosophical problems for which solutions have been actively sought - what is optimal control and how can we attain it in some heuristic fashion automatically. The basic analog controller can be represented by the differential equation: [V = Ko + K1 f y • dt + K2 dt(1)] where: v and y are the instantaneous values of output and error respectively and K0, K1, and K2 are tuning constants. The empirical rules for establishing the values of K0, K1, and K2, which provide stability, have evolved from the initial suggestions of Ziegler and Nichols(9) in 1942 and have served their purpose well. However, later analyses demonstrated that there are in fact many combinations of the values of K0, K1, and K2 which, besides being stable, behave better or worse in relation to other process control criteria; some examples are duration of error, amplitude of a damped response, magnitude or rate of movement of control valve or adjustment of speed regulator, etc. The definition of optimality had broadened. In 1964, Kalman(4) published his classic paper which tried to resolve these problems. He defined a

THIS communication reports film-recorded low-energy (-100 kev) proton blocking patterns'-3 for hcp and wurtzite crystals. In particular the sequence of relative line intensities* (corresponding to planar blocking) of common hcp metals is compared with those of the wurtzite semiconductors CdS and CdSe. The results show that the sequence is characteristic of structure. For closely similar structures such as those of CdS and CdSe, differences of line intensity attributable to the difference in atomic number, 2, of the scattering centers may also be seen. The apparatus and techniques used in this work were identical with those reported previously in a study of cubic systems.3 All metals were given standard metal-lographic etches, and the semiconductors cleaved, immediately prior to introduction to the vacuum system. Fig. 1 shows the unit cell of the wurtzite structure, and the geometry used to obtain the [1120] and [0001] patterns of Fig. 2. The axial ratio, c/a, for all ma- terials of Fig. 2 is close to 1.63. The patterns are then directly comparable in linear dimensions inasmuch as they have been reproduced at the same overall magnification of the patterns. (Overall magnification is proportional to the product of film-to-target distance and printing magnification. Very often important discoveries are made in one industry that may be used to advantage in another, but, owing to the rarity that men step out of one industry into another, these discoveries remain unknown outside of the trade or profession in which they are made. The present paper is written solely with the object of bringing to the notice of mining and metallurgical engineers a centrifugal ore-concentrator which eventually may have a great application. Ore- Grading. Fig. 1 represents the action which takes place when solids of different dimensions are stirred up in a box and allowed to settle as minerals of the same size but of different specific gravity. This principle is applied practically in grading china-clay and in enriching tin-slimes. In the latter case the slimes are stirred around in a tub with water and allowed to settle while at the same time the side of the tub is struck with a hammer. The colloidal slimes are then poured off and various slices taken off horizontally. The great drawback of this process is that the particles are deposited horizontally and all the colloids are lost. Fig. 2 represents the action in which the particles are deposited side by side. Here the drawback is the great length of the box needed in order to prevent excessive loss. The alternative to lengthening the box is to increase the force of gravity. Centrifugal force may be regarded practically as the force of gravity augmented. Fig. 3 illustrates the Gee centrifugal machine for grading ores. INTERMITTENT injection of gas in gas-lift pumping is a variation of the common practice in that the gas is' .delivered to the well for a short, period, called the "on time," followed by a period during which none is admitted, called the "off time," instead of being admitted continuously at a constant rate or by intermittent flowing in which it is occasionally delivered to the well in just sufficient quantity to flow off the accumulated head of fluid. The term "gas" is used throughout this discussion but it should be remembered that in so far as the operation is concerned either air or natural gas may be used. The equipment at the well is the same as commonly used in gas-lift installations and gas may be admitted to either the tubing or the casing. It seldom occurs that all the wells on a lease can be pumped economically by intermittent injection from one header. Wells that. have flow characteristics which permit their being handled together have their intake lines grouped at a central compressor station. Well groups may consist of two or more wells. The total volume of gas delivered by each group of compressors goes to one well at a time through a quick opening valve, each well connected to the header receiving its charge of gas in turn. Special cases may require a deviation from this arrangement. The distribution of the gas to the different wells is effected by an automatic timing device which operates quick-opening valves on the intake lines. The timing mechanism may be actuated by electricity, liquid or gas pressure. The essential factor in the operation of the timing mechanism is that as one intake valve is closed another must be opened.

IN a previous article' the authors outlined a study of the variables in rod milling and also reported data from a series of open circuit grinding tests on a massive limestone in a 30-in. x 4-ft end peripheral discharge rod mill. As a second part of the experimental program, an analysis is now presented for the 30-in. x 4-ft overflow rod mill grinding under identical conditions, except that discharge ports on the periphery of the mill shell have been sealed so that the products from the present series overflowed through a 9-in. diam .opening in the center of the end plate. A variance analysis has been made of the combined data for the two experiments, and performances of the two mills are compared here. Included in the first report' were descriptions of feed preparation, rod mill circuit, instrumentation and controls, and techniques used to evaluate data. Dependent and independent variables were defined, and variance analyses were made to test the relative significance of variables and to establish magnitude of error for the experiment. Significant data were plotted in various combinations, and conclusions were drawn from the graphs. The procedure and analysis in this series of tests follows the first tests and is not repeated. Data from the second series are recorded in Table I. Listed in the first three columns are the independent variables of feed rate (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 1b per hr), mill speed (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of critical), and pulp density (50, 60, 70, and 80 pct). The dependent variables, Pso, P100, reduction ratio, slope of the log-log sieve analysis curve, power demand, and Bond work index follow. Of these, only the reduction ratio and the Bond work index were analyzed for significance. Production of new surface as calculated from sieve analyses has not been included for this series because of the questionable assumptions that have to be made to satisfy the formulas involved. The large number of products obtained during the runs precluded the use of surface measurement techniques by the gas adsorption methods at this time; however, samples of all products have been stored for future reference. To test the consistency of the reporting of the sieved products, an averaged sieve analysis was calculated from the wet-dry plots obtained from the three product samples of each run. The resulting averaged analysis was plotted and the P80, selected. The relative deviations of the P80's from each of the three product samples with respect to the P80 of the averaged analysis were then calculated. In only two sets were the relative deviations (6.2 and 9.9 pct) considered excessive. In each of these two sets, one sieve analysis was obviously out of line; hence that analysis was ignored and new averages were computed. This reduced the relative deviations to 1.2 and 2.7 pct respectively. The relative deviations of the product analyses with respect to their averages ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 pct at 1000 lb per hr, 0.0 to 1.1 pct at 2000 lb per hr, 0.2 to 3.0 pct at 3000 lb per hr, 0.3 to 4.3 pct at 4000 lb per hr, and 0.5 to 5.2 pct at 5000 lb per hr. The relative deviation of the 80 pct passing point for 96 dry sieve analyses of the feed with respect to that of the averaged analysis was 7.6 pct. This slightly higher percentage can probably be attributed to a greater proportion of tramp oversize in a crusher product than is ordinarily found in a rod mill product. The last column on Table I lists the adjusted work index, which has been used as the measure of efficiency for the various combinations of operating conditions investigated. Efficiency increases as the index becomes lower. It was reported in the previous paper that the work indexes for the Waukesha limestone used in these experiments decreased as the product size decreased (as calculated from Bond grindabilities). That is, this limestone becomes easier to grind as the material becomes finer. This is unusual, because the work index for most materials as calculated from the Bond grindability has remained constant as the product size decreased or has increased slightly. Table II lists the results of Bond grindability tests at all mesh sizes from 3 to 200 and the work indexes calculated from them. To remove this variation of work index with product size from the data so that results would apply to any material of constant work index, the work index values shown in Table II were plotted against product size on log-log paper. From this curve (a straight line function in this case), the expected work index for the product size for each of the runs of the experiment was obtained. The work indexes as calculated from the reduction ratio and energy consumption were then divided by the corresponding expected work index. The results obtained are reported in percentages on Table I as adjusted work index and are actually percentages of the work index for the Waukesha limestone at the size in question. Multiplication of the work index value for a material of constant index by these percentages should allow the application of the adjusted work index curves to the material. Only the adjusted work index values, not the actual experimental values, were used for the variance analyses and for the graphs.

The present-day application of geological knowledge to mine operations owes much to Survey activities. Early publications covering developed deposits at Comstock and Eureka in Nevada, and Leadville in Colorado, aroused great interest in mine geology among mine owners and operators. In later years personal contacts between Survey geologists, notably Lindgren, Spurr, Emmons, Weed, and Ransome, to name only a few, and mine managers, mine superintendents and mine foremen, brought directly home the importance of geological mapping and study in connection with mine operations. However, the Survey had recognized from the beginning that it was not practicable, either from the viewpoint of cost or policy, to supply direct help to the miner. The situation was met by many large mining companies through the organization of geological departments to deal with problems of geology which concerned not alone the every-day mine operation but also the life expectancy of the ore deposit. The mine owner therefore looked to the mine geologist to apply the "laws of ore deposition" in estimating the future of his mine. The examination of outside properties also became a duty of the company geologist where replacements were needed or where expansion of operations was contemplated. And finally, out of this situation there developed the independent consulting geologist, specializing in geological examinations of prospects, mines, and mining districts, whose duties included the highly important but often difficult task of appraising ore reserves and ore possibilities. Thus, while it may be considered by many that the work of the mine geologist overlaps that of the Survey geologist, their respective fields of endeavor are not in conflict. The appearance of the mine geologist has lessened in no manner the need of intensive field and research work by the Geological Survey and related organizations.

The Fifth Annual National Exposition of Chemical Industries will be held in Chicago at the Coliseum and First Regiment Armory during the week of Sept. 22. It was decided to hold the exposition in Chicago, this year, for two reasons: The U. S. Army commandeered the Grand Central Palace Exposition Building in New York, immediately on the close of the last exposition and converted it into a receiving hospital, the use for which is now, happily, nearly ceased; and it was thought that the Exposition would succeed in bringing about a greater development of chemical industries in the Chicago district and the adjoining states. THE first trial of longhole drilling of raises began in June 1949 at the Holden mine, Chelan Div., Howe Sound Co. The cost of this raise was about the same as the average cost of raising by normal methods which was sufficiently encouraging to give the method further trial. At Holden, the Noranda method of blasthole drilling is used except that percussion drills have replaced diamond drills for making blastholes in all but certain special situations. Two thirds of these holes are between 40 and 70 ft long.

A medium is anisotropic if its properties vary with direction. This is the general characteristic of many rocks, for example, schists, slates, gneisses, phyllites and other metamorphic rocks. Bedded and regularly jointed rocks also display anisotropic behavior. This paper is concerned with the influence of rock anisotropy on in-situ stress measurements. It is limited to stress measurements by overcoring techniques for which strains and displacements are recorded either on the walls of a pilot hole at the end of one or several boreholes or within instrumented solid or hollow inclusions perfectly bonded to the surface of the pilot hole. The rock is described as homogeneous, continuous, anisotropic and linearly elastic. The following questions are answered with special emphasis on rocks that can be classed as transversely isotropic or orthotropic: the number of independent measurements obtainable in a single borehole; the number of boreholes required to determine the in-situ stress field; the influence of rock anisotropy on these numbers; the influence of the anisotropy type and the error involved by neglecting rock anisotropy.

In November of 1957, the Aliquippa Works started operation of the third basic oxygen furnace shop in North America. This high speed basic steelmaking method provided a very economical increase in capacity at the Works. The success of these two (2) 81-ton furnaces led to the construction of a second B.O.F. shop, producing heats of 230 tons at J&L's Cleveland Works in 1962. The experience gained operating both shops provided the background for the design of the new steelmaking complex at the Aliquippa Works. This new complex consists of a three (3) furnace shop with two (2) furnaces blowing alternately producing heats ranging from 120 to 207 tons. This variation in heat size is predicated on the requirement that approximately 20% of the shop production will be used to supply steel to a six (6) strand casting machine, producing 4' through 7" billets. The new B.O.F. shop has replaced all other steelmaking units including the #1 Shop, where operations were discontinued in September of 1968. With the advent of the strand casting facilities in September of 1969, many of the standard shop practices had to be changed to compensate for higher tap temperatures, longer handling times, and reduced ladle availability. The subsequent changes in these areas led to the evolution of the strand cast ladle practice which is described in this paper.

No observations on the mechanical properties of iron-manganese alloys have been published since pure manganese became readily available, either distilled manganese or electrolytic manganese. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether iron-manganese alloys are essentially brittle, as reported by Hadfield,1 or whether the lack of ductility observed was due to impurities in the alloys that he studied. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys were melted in a 100-lb. high-frequency induction furnace with a magnesia crucible, using ingot iron and electrolytic manganese. The heats were split, the first giving six 18-lb. ingots and the second three. Each successive heat was higher in manganese and about 0.3 per cent silicon [ ] was added as ferrosilicon. The alloys forged without difficulty-and were given a 90 percent reduction to 3/4-in. rounds. The chemical analysis of the alloys is given in Table I. The forged rods were homogenized for [ ] 24 hr. at 1150°C. (2100°F.) and air-cooled. The alloys were tested in two conditions of heat-treatment: (I) as normalized from 870°C. (1600°F.) and (2) normalized from 870°C. and tempered for z hr. at 540°C. (1000°F.) and air-cooled. The tensile specimens were 0.505 in. in diameter with a 2-in. gauge length, and the impact specimens were V-notch Charpy. The proportional limit and yield strength were taken from the stress-strain diagrams drawn by a Peters recorder. The data obtained from the tensile test and the hardness measurements are given in Table 2. Specimens that were normalized are designated by N; those that were normalized and tempered by T. Alloy G was tempered after forging (D).

Polychlorinated biphenyls were the basis of non-flammable askarel dielectric liquids wed in electrical equipment made between 1929 and 1978. Although PCBs were widely used in mine electrical equipment, the toxicity and environmental persistence of this chemical led Congress to ban its manufacture and use. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8838 summarizes the regulations imposed by the EPA on the use and disposal of PCBs, and describes the limitations of available substitutes. Recent changes in the regulations will impose additional requirements on the use of PCBs by the mining industry. This paper is an update of the material presented in the Bureau of Mines information circular.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) BELIEVING that the results accomplished in the mill of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev., during the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 1914, will be of interest, I am presenting the more prominent facts and figures showing the progress made in treating this ore with especial reference to tonnage, supplies, costs, and extractions. The mill is situated at Wonder, Nev., in the Wonder mining district, 55 miles east from Fallon, Nev., the nearest railroad point. All supplies are hauled this distance by freight teams, this method of transportation having been found more reliable for continuous service than trucks, the price paid for hauling being slightly under one cent per pound. In this mill are treated the ores of the Nevada Wonder Mining Co. ,
