The problem of handling the large quantities of water encountered in the Old Dominion mine presents many features of interest. In the present paper are discussed the probable sources of water, the pumping equipment, the increased flow into the mine in the early part of 1915, culminating in the flooding of the 18th and 16th levels in March of that year, and the difficulties that were met with during the high-water period. I. PRELIMINARY The Old Dominion mine, situated 1 mile north of the town of Globe, Ariz., has long been one of the prominent copper producers of the State, and until the opening up of the copper schist deposits in the neighboring mines of Miami, was responsible for the greater part of the copper output from the Globe district. As the gradual exhaustion of its orebodies near the surface led to the downward development of the mine, more water was encountered in the western portions directly underlying the dacite formation until the drainage problem became a serious factor in the operation of the mine and in the economical extraction of the ore. A heavy inrush of water on the 10th level of the mine in 1906, preceded by still earlier water difficulties, rendered imperative the immediate installation of a pumping equipment capable of handling large flows of water. While the Old Dominion has been recognized as a wet mine since its early days and one in which the complete control of the water situation was of paramount importance in the development of the lower levels, it is chiefly in the last nine years, since the installation of the increased pumping equipment, that the mine has developed and handled large quantities of water. Its maximum pumping record was reached in the first six months of 1915, during which time, following a prolonged period of abnormal precipitation, the pumps handled 1,624,740,000 gal. of water; while in the month of March alone, over 407,000,000 gal. of water were pumped from the mine.

In speaking of the mining and economic conditions prevailing at the present time on the Rand, it is not my intention to go into the details of the mining practice, since this has been already well described both in the Transactions' and elsewhere,2 but rather to take a more comprehensive view of the industry and its surroundings as a whole, marking its general development and the lines of its future progress. In a paper entitled Deep-Level Shafts on the Witwaters-rand, with Remarks on a Method of Working the Greatest Number of Deep-Level Mines with the Fewest Possible Shafts,' presented to this Institute in August, 1900, I drew attention to the great cost of sinking the very deep vertical shafts that were then being seriously proposed as necessary for the development of the deeper areas, pointing out the strong advisability of working this ground by means of inclines to be sunk from the existing shafts of from 3,000 to 4,000 ft. in vertical depth. In this paper it is stated (p. 975): '" In short, practice upon the Rand now tends towards fewer vertical shafts and more underground inclines, especially for the very deep mining about to be undertaken." In consequence, the 6,000-ft. vertical shafts, at one time so much discuesed, have never been started, and they do not now seem likely ever to be. The performance of a water-drive reservoir having a gas cap depends primarily on the movement of the gar-oil and oil-water contacts. The movement of the contacts during production depends in turn on fluid withdrawals and how the reservoir pressure changes as fluids are produced from the reservoir; that is, on how effectively the aquifer maintains pressure by replacing withdrawals. inasmuch as pressure changes, fluid withdrawals, contact positions, and produced gas-oil and oil-water ratios are interdependent, the analysis and prediction of the performance of a reservoir produced in a given way must take into account this interdependence throughout depletion. This paper presents an analysis which, within the limitations of the assumptions made, yields an engineering approach to predicting future performance based on reservoir pressure and production history. The most significant assumption is the method of extrapolation of future gas-oil and water-oil ratios. The extrapolation procedure smoothly increases both ratios to preselected values as the remaining oil column undergoes a specified decrease in thickness. This preselection is made on the busis of previous field experience in depletion of similar reservoirs under similar conditions. For computing future performance a vdumebic balance L combined with the differential equation defining pressure distribution in the aquifer to obtain positions of water-oil and gas-oil contacts. From these positions are extrapolated produced water-oil and gas-oil ratios. Reservoir performance can be investigated when oil production rates are dependent upon various factors including the performance of the reservoir itself. Examples of practical application of the procedure are included. INTRODUCTION To predict performance of water-drive reservoirs with gas caps and thin oil columns, it is necessary to describe the motions of the fluids within the reservoir during the entire production period to depletion. These motions depend on the pressure changes and on the withdrawal of oil, gas and water. Production of oil from the oil zone primarily causes water to move in to take its place; production of gas from the cap tends to cause oil to migrate into its place. In addition, the volumes of oil and gas remaining in the reservoir depend on changes in the pressure, since a decrease in pressure causes fluid expansion, gas liberation and oil shrinkage. A method of relating the future pressure to total withdrawals is used to describe the motions of fluids within the reservoir under conditions arising in possible modes of production. The analysis is based on two relationships and will reduce the problem to one amenable to digital computation. The first of these concerns the dependence of the pressure distribution in the entire aquifer furnishing the water drive upon the total reservoir withdrawals. This dependence is dictated by the permeability distribution and the extent of the aquifer; at present, such information is most readily obtained from the performance history by means of the resistancecapacitance reservoir analyzer. The second relation involves withdrawals, pressure in the reservoir, and movement of oil, gas, and water within the reservoir. The analysis is subject to certain simplifying assumptions that are necessary to permit solution of the problem. A comparison of the methods of this paper with those presently practiced is pertinent. One method of analysis is to use the reservoir analyzer to predict reservoir behavior based on aquifer characteristics determined from production history. Inasmuch as the total withdrawal rate depends upon the gas-oil and water-oil ratios, which depend in turn upon, among other things, the positions of the gas-oil and water-oil contacts, these ratios must be assumed in advance. In this paper these ratios are, instead, related to the computed positions of gas-oil and water-oil contacts. Thus, our method can be applied to problems in which the oil production rate is limited by produced gas-oil ratio, or to problems in which it is desired to determine the variable gas injection rate that will maintain the gas-oil or water-oil contact stationary. These problems cannot be worked satisfactorily on the analyzer. Another method presently used is based on a paper by Hurst.' It would be hard to find a mineral region that has been more beset with " processes" for the extraction of gold from auriferous sulphides than North Carolina. And it would be hard to find a mineral region less sought by capital. So many promising mines have come to grief here (perhaps because they were too "promising"), SO many "processes" have been tried and abandoned, so much expensive machinery has been bought and thrown aside, that to invite money here for investing in gold mines is almost sure to cause a smile of incredulity, or a sigh of disappointed hopes. Within the writer's personal knowledge, at least five disastrous failures have followed the introduction of as many processes. It would seem as

A review of the published literature on the mechanism of depression of sulfide minerals shows that a unified theory is not yet available. Various mechanisms that have been postulated include competition between depressants and collectors to adsorb at the surface sites, creation of thermodynamic conditions nonconducive for formation of a metal collector salt, or formation of a hydrophilic coating on the surface. The hydrophilic coating may or may not effect the adsorption of collectors. In another mechanism, the depressant may participate directly in oxidation/reduction reactions between collectors and sulfide minerals. Examples from the literature highlight oxidation/reduction effects in the depression of sulfide minerals.

IT can scarcely be considered a matter of doubt, in the present state of our knowledge, that the existence of, at any rate, two well-marked allotropic modifications of gold can be recognized, namely (a), the ordinary, yellow variety, and (b) the red, brown or purple, non-lustrous, amorphous variety. There are, indeed, not wanting indications that still other allotropic forms may be capable of existing. It is, for instance, possible that the green colors of gold obtained under certain conditions, or the black powder produced when the alloy of gold with potassium is decomposed by water, may represent further allotropic modifications, although this proposition is open to doubt. It call scarcely be pretended that the two first-named varieties have been absolutely isolated, yet it is, perhaps, quite permissible to speak of the ordinary and the amorphous modifications as having a proved existence. Ordinary gold is sometimes found crystallized in nature, although never in a state of purity. When gold is melted and, cooled slowly, its surface shows crystalline markings, and the fact that it is capable of crystallizing in the cubic system may be looked upon as established. When gold is produced by precipitation, the form which it assumes is dependent on the conditions of precipitation. G. Rose 1 says that gold precipitated by ferrous sulphate from very dilute solutions is so finely divided that no regular form can be recognized, but in more concentrated solutions the precipitate consists of minute cubes. K. Baumgarten has returned from active service in France. He reports that he saw C. W. Campbell, formerly with the 2d Engineers on the Chateau Thierry front, and believes that the latter returned to the United States on August 1. He also saw J. J. Croston; G. J. Sielaff, recently transferred to the Gas Service; Thomas M. Smither, survivor of the Tuscania after a 10-mile swim to Ireland. While in Paris he en-deavored to see Prof. Sauveur, but was unsuccessful. F. K. Borrow was given a commission as Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1914, but had to relinquish it, on account of ill health, in August, 1915. His health has much improved and he hopes to resume active work toward the end of this year. Davis, A. W:, see British Columbia Engineers, below. Alfred Fox, Jr., enlisted in the Public Schools Brigade, Royal Fusiliers, in September, 1914; was gazetted Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery in December, 1914, promoted to Captain in November, 1915, and Adjutant to 78th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, in January, 1916. He was appointed Staff Captain of the 12th Divisional Artillery in November, 1917. He has served continuously in France since July 1, 1915. He was awarded the Military Cross in January, 1917, and four times mentioned in despatches. E. Fraser-Campbell writes that he joined the London University 0. T. C. in January, 1918, for five weeks; enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in February, 1918, and attended a training course for officer cadets at Chatham for six weeks. He was commissioned 2d Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, in April, 1918. After two months on home training at Chatham, he landed in France on June 23, 1918, posted to 180th Tunnelling Co., R. E., and is now with his unit up on the line.

The investigation herein described was carried out for the purpose of studying, both by chemical and metallographical means, the extent of over-oxidation of steel that can be accomplished by excessive overblowing in a Bessemer converter. 111 addition there are appended some results of basic open-hearth and crucible steels. Remarks on Chemical Methods. The test block used was hemispherical in shape, 4.5 in. in diameter and 2 in. thick. Drillings for analysis were obtained by drilling through the entire solid part of the block, carefully avoiding all cracks and blow-holes and mixing these drillings thoroughly. Drillinga were carefully examined for scale and the finest were gone over with a microscope to be sure all scale from whatever source had been removed. Oxygen was determined by the well-known method of Ledebur, modified according to Cushman,1 with, however, the removal of the preheating tube, which was found unnecessary. This method has been found to give concordant results. Blanks run from 0.0003 to 0.0006 g. Duplicate determinations varied not more than 0.001 to 0.003 per cent. It seems to be generally supposed that the hydrogen method gives only that oxygen which is combined with iron. Whether this be true or not, the content of oxygen existing as iron oxide no doubt predominates sufficiently, so that the result obtained is sufficient to indicate whether the steel is over-oxidized or not. We are well aware that the oxides of manganese and chromium, when existing alone, are not reduced by hydrogen at a red heat. THE production of soft coal from strip mines in the United States has shown a remarkable growth in the last sixteen years, increasing from one and one-quarter million tons in 1914 to approximately twenty-two million tons in 1929. This is a growth of approximately 1660 p& cent, as compared with a growth of approximately 20 per cent in the underground mines for the same period. But even with this marked in- crease the total tonnage produced by open-face mining represents only 4 per cent of the nation's soft coal tonnage.

IN developing a consistent picture of the thermal expansion of the commercial chromium steels, which cover a range of, carbon contents, it is desirable to know the expansion in the limiting case of the binary, carbon-free, iron-chromium alloys. We have, therefore, determined the thermal expansion of a series of five special alloys, ranging in chromium content from 3 to 10.5 per cent, with not more than 0.03 per cent carbon, over a temperature range extending beyond the transformation region; this low carbon content enables us to draw reasonably reliable conclusions as to the behavior of the carbon-free system. Moreover, the measurements serve to determine the beginning and the end of the alpha-gamma transformation; and they emphasize once more the fact that a transformation temperature determined by any method in which the specimen is .cooled at an appreciable rate is apt to be seriously in error, particularly if the metal contains a transformation-retarding element such as chromium or managanese. The lag, or undercooling, observed at the ?-a transformation is explained in terms of the influence of temperature on transformation velocity; the rather unusual shape of the ? loop is attributed to a change with temperature and with composition of the distribution of chromium between the alpha-iron and gamma-iron solid solutions. The exact composition of the alloys which were obtained through the courtesy of Dr. W. Rohn, of the Heraeus Vakuumschmelze A-G., is given in Table 1. Determinations of the linear thermal expansion and of transformation temperature were carried out in the vacuum dilatometer previously described,1 using a rate of heating and of cooling of 3.0° to 3.5° per minute unless otherwise stated. Magnetic susceptibility, which was measured in studying the rate of transformation, was determined with a magnetic balance, which also has. been described.2

Critical transport currents were measured as a function of perpendicular external magnetic field in Ti-22 at. pct Nb wire samples. These samples were heat-treated to yield w Phase precipitates at denslties ranging from 10 to 10 17cm-3. The Precipitates are ellipsoids of revolution with major axes of 50 to 1300A. Flux-Pinning by w precipitates is responsible for the high critical transport currents that were ob- ThE ability of a type II superconductor to sustain a zero-resistance transport current (Jc) in an external magnetic field (H) is due to the presence of micro-structural features which can impede the motion of magnetic flux penetrating the superconductor under the influence of a Lorentz force. Such features are referred to as pinning sites. The pinning strength is tained. A sample cooled from 800°C and annealed 1 hr at 450°C carried a critical tramport current of 10 amp per sq cm at 30 kG. Variations in the current-carrying ability of this alloy are due to changes in its pinning strength which is a function of precipitate density and composition and of the composition of the matrix. the reaction of the bulk superconductor to the Lorentz force and depends on the efficiency of the individual pinning sites and on their volume density. The super -current density increases with pinning strength, other things being equal. The above concepts are discussed in detail in a comprehensive review by Livingston and Schadler.' In Ti-Nb alloys, as in other binary titanium alloys, the metastable hexagonal w phase usually forms below the p/a + p phase boundary near the titanium side of the phase diagram. Relative permeability and relative electrical resistivity curves are obtained for networks of tubes with a tube radius distribution by means of a network of resistors used as an analog model. These curves are similar to those obtained from real porous media. The effects of pore size distribution and network structure on relative permeability and resistivity are demonstrated. INTRODUCTION Study of the dynamic properties of networks of single size tubes in paper IT' of this series has shown that the network model has flow properties similar to those observed on real porous media. The comparison of properties of single size tube networks with those of real porous media cannot be carried far because very few porous media have uniform size pores. The capillary pressure curve from most porous materials such as soil, sandstone, and sintered glass indicate that these materials have pore size distribution similar to those shown in Figs. 5-1, 9-1, and 10-I.† To properly test the network model, it is therefore necessary to compare the dynamic properties of real porous media with those of networks of tubes in which the tube radii are distributed accord- ing to the distributions in the aforementioned figures. A network in which the tube sizes are distributed cannot be treated in the same manner as a network of single size tubes. In the single size tube network, the relation between tube geometry, flow resistance, and tube volume did not have to be known if the assumption was made that whatever relation did exist was the same for all tubes in a particular network. In a network of distributed tube size, the relation between tube geometry and flow resistance must be known or assumed in order to replace the tubes by equivalent electrical resistors. Relation of Tube Geometry to Flow Resistance The interchangeability of tubes and electrical resistors in the network model is possible because of the analogy between Poiseuille's law and Ohm's law. Poiseuille's law for a cylinder is q= pr4/8µl ?P.........(1) where q is the volumetric rate of flow, µ is the viscosity, ?P is the pressure gradient, r is the tube radius, and 1 is the tube length. Ohm's law is I=1/R?E..........(2) where I is the flux and is equivalent to the volumetric rate in Poiseuille's law, R is the resistance, and ?E is the voltage gradient. Both laws give the flux as a function of the potential drop and the resistance of the medium. By analogy then, 1/R=pr4/8µl ?P...........(3)

LIKE a runner catching his second wind, the mining geologist in 1944 has had some opportunity to appraise the result of three years of active and intense search for the metallic sinews of war and peace. The war period has been one of physical activity and accumulation of new data but has not so far resulted in the announcement of any profound or revolutionary theoretical concepts or techniques. Most technical publications during the year have been either descriptive or statistical. A review of accomplishments during the war years, although affording some measure of satisfaction in individual cases or regarding production of certain metals or' ores, is far from justifying any feeling of complacency regarding the growth of the profession either in fundamental knowledge or in application. During 1944 an abundant supply of all metals and minerals flowed steadily to smelters and fabricating plants. Also, during this and preceding years, adequate stock piles for war needs, in view of the improved foreign and domestic supply situation, were accumulated in many metals in such quantities that the mining industry has become concerned not with the problem of supply but with the effect these accumulated stocks, if maintained, might have on the postwar market. These considerations culminated in the enactment by Congress of the Surplus Disposal Act, which, admittedly a tempo-

(New York Meeting. February, 1913.) For a number of years many attempts have been made to use thermit in order to do away with piping in ingots. Some of these attempts were successful, while others did not give the expected results. Nearly every plant had its own method of using the thermit, and no special care was taken to study, the results or to find the causes for lack of success. Formerly the principle of the process was to decrease the piping by introducing a can filled with thermit, attached to an iron rod, into the head of the ingot directly after it bad been poured. In this case the thermit reaction took place in the upper part of the ingot, and it was thought that through the heat produced the head would keep liquid longer and piping thus be reduced. In other words, the aim was to keep the head of the ingot open by making use of the heat of the thermit reaction, which would thereby give the gases in the steel sufficient time to escape. This result can be attained by the application of a large enough quantity of thermit, but it would not be economical in general practice, and could only be used for high-grade material. Many steel-makers abroad and in this country have had this experience. The Th. Goldschmidt A. G., Germany, has, therefore, made a special study of this question with the co-operation of a well-known steel company, and has worked out a new method for. the application of thermit for this purpose. The results obtained have been most satisfactory and reliable, and this- process is now used in Germany on a large scale in many prominent steel-works.

The behavior of steel after overstrain and at moderate temperatures is fairly well known. It has been made the subject of much investigation, and our knowledge is clear and definite on many points. The ultimate raising of the elastic limit, after moderate overstrain, and the consequent lowering of the ductility, seem to be well established. It is also well understood that the immediate effect of overstrain is to lower the elastic limit, possibly to zero, but that if not interfered with, this limit will subsequently rise higher than before. The " tests after moderate temperature," reported in this paper, were undertaken to verify the above statements for the particular steel under investigation, and also to determine, if possible, the total time required for complete recovery from this state of overstrain. The behavior of overstrained steel at temperatures at or below 32" F. is not so well known. Tests made by Prof. E. G. Coker, at McGill University,' show that steel, overstrained and subjected to cold, will remain in a state of overstrain for an indefinite period. I am not aware of any other published results of tests along this particular line. The effect of time and temperature on the recovery of steel from overstrain was made in 1902-3 the subject of some investigation in the laboratories of the College of Civil Engineering of Cornell University. A general plan was outlined in connection with the regular courses of instruction in testing of materials; but the press of routine work and the demands of the schedules on the time of the students were so great as to presage long delay in the completion of the work. i2) twinning in poly crystalline magnesium does not usually occur homogeneously but is concentrated in localized regions or bands inclined at about 45 deg to the stress axis. These bands of twinning are in many ways similar to the Luders bands seen in mild steel alzd Al-Mg alloys. Within a hand the percentage of the volume twinned may approach 100 with no twinning outside the band. Bands are not produced in specimens of grain size a3 x 10-= in. or in samples deformed at temperatures 300°F. Annealing of heavily twinned regions leads to re crystallization textures markedly different from those found in the starting material. The exact preferred orientation appears to depend on the starting grain size, the amount of compres-sive strain and the manner in which it is introduced. MAGNESIUM, with its hexagonal crystal structure, deforms plastically at room temperature by a variety of deformation mechanisms, one of the most important of which is (1012) twinning. In single crystals such twinning occurs on compression parallel to the basal plane or tension perpendicular to it. In wrought polycrystalline magnesium, such as rolled sheet, the preferred orientation is such that almost all the grains have their basal planes nearly parallel to the sheet surface. Therefore, if sheet material is deformed by cold rolling or by tension in the plane of the sheet, deformation of the grains by (1012) twinning is not favored. On the other hand, twins form readily on compression parallel to the plane of the sheet as in a compression test, on the compression side of a bent sample, or at the outer rim of a drawn cup. The first part of this paper deals with the morphology of (1012) twinning in polycrystalline magnesium. Some aspects of this subject were covered by Barrett and ~aller.' Of direct bearing on the work to be reported here are the comments of Jetter' in discussion to Ref. 1. He shows that Mg + 1.5 pct Mn alloy sheet when bent about a transverse axis develops a pattern of transverse bands on the surface of compression. A longitudinal section through the sheet shows that the bands are wedge-shaped and inclined to the rolling direction. The bands were identified as "outcrops of regions in which deformation is localized as the result of the reorientation brought about by (1012) twinning". The second part of the paper treats the recrys-tallization texture of the specimens twinned by compression. Magnesium deformed and then annealed generally recrystallizes with no change in orientation.1'3'4 This statement is true provided that the amount of (1012) twinning occurring during deformation is small. In an isolated observation, Anse15 has shown that, when deformation produces much (1072) twinning, annealing causes new maxima to appear in the pole figure. The second part of the paper elaborates on this point. I) MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES All of the experimental work to be reported was done using the commercial sheet and plate alloy AZ31B (nominal composition: 3 pct Al, 1 pct Zn, 0.4 pct Mn, balance magnesium). This alloy is available commercially in two tempers, -0 (fully annealed) and -H24 (partially annealed), and specimens of both tempers were used in various experiments. TABLES showing the drift and inclination of wells surveyed in the years 1924 to 28' and in the year 1929' have already been published. Each of these tables included a little over 1,000,000 ft. of rotary hole. In the year 1930 the table -shown-in . Fig. 1, comprising, the results of surveys .of 1,030,344 ft. of hole and representing 11,642 individual survey readings, was compiled. For that purpose we selected 'I only wells that had been drilled in California during that year. The footage of Fig. 1 differs from the two earlier tables in that the wells were all drilled in the year 1930. In the earlier tables, the footage shown was surveyed in the years designated, but some of the wells were drilled in earlier years.
