ENGINEERING students to the number of 73,269 had been enrolled in United States and Canadian schools on Nov. 5, 1945, but, as shown in the following tables, even this sizable number will not greatly remedy the 150,000 deficit reported by Vannevar Bush, director of the U. S. Office of Scientific Research and Development, to exist in the engineering and scientific man-power supply. These figures were received in advance from the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, and are given in detail in the January 1946 issue of the Journal of Engineering Education. Although the enrollment on Nov. 5 was an increase of 76% over the low of 41,632 in 1944-45, it was still 36% below the peak enrollment in 1941-42 of 115, 228. These figures include both undergraduate students and graduate students in the schools of the United States and Canada and are therefore comparable. As was to be expected, almost half of this enrollment is in the first or freshman year and 25% of the total are veterans. Also, 1,850, or about 2.5%, are women. A measure of the seriousness of the engineering graduate supply in these two countries is indicated by the trend of the number of first degrees that have been conferred during this period of scarcity:

FLOW and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even universal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non- mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manage- able simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. LUMINESCENT materials have been used in an increasing variety of ways in recent years. Such uses range from the screens on which the picture or image is presented in television and other cathode ray tubes to fluorescent lamps, fluorescent effects in decorative, theatrical, and display lighting, and the many applications of phosphorescence in paints, textiles, paper, and plastics. During the war the screens for a radar set or the "night-seeing" devices were not fundamentally different from those in other cathode ray tubes, but nevertheless they presented special problems for the phosphor manufacturer. It was essential that the "pips" on a radar screen continue to glow after the exciting beam had swept on, but this afterglow would be ruinous to a television screen. In the image tube used for seeing at night with infrared instead of visible light, electrons emitted by an infrared-sensitive receiving surface were amplified and converted to visible light after striking a fluorescent screen. The small size of the screen caused special problems in reducing the grain size of the phosphor to obtain adequate resolution. Other devices used phosphor surfaces which could be stimulated directly by infrared radiation to emit visible light. Energy was stored in the phosphors by prior excitation with short-wave-length radiation, and the stored energy released on subsequent exposure to infrared radiation. Maps, navigational charts, bombing manuals, and computers of various sorts were printed on fluorescent paper or lettered with fluorescent inks. Fluorescent markings excited by small ultraviolet lamps were used on airplane instrument dials. A large amount of research was done to determine the best color for the emitted light and other properties for the fluorescent materials, and on the best methods for their fabrication into the items listed above. Phosphorescent materials found wide use during blackout restrictions to mark safe passageways, to delineate traffic hazards, to identify packages, and to mark tools and other items of equipment.

A GLANCE at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surface is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract.

THE principle of fractional crystallization has been successfully used to prepare high-purity (99.999 pct) Ga. Hoffman and Scribnerl removed single crystals of gallium solidifying in a gallium melt, while Zimmerman2 grew single crystals from the melt by the Kyropolous technique. In contrast, attempts at purifying gallium by zone refining have been less successful. ichards, reported that despite the passage of 40 zones through a gallium ingot, there still remained 5 to 70 ppm each of Cu, Fe, Ca, Mg, Si, Al, and Ag. Previously, Detwiler and Fox4 detected only one impurity, Pb, segregating in zone-refined ingots. These surprising results prompted an investigation of the factors controlling impurity segregation in gallium. Possible reasons for this were insufficient diffusion of impurities in the melt; recontamination of the melt by its oxide film which is not affected by the passage of the zone; reaction of gallium with the boat; sudden freezing of gallium following supercooling, especially since gallium easily supercools to and trapping of impurities at grain boundaries. Impurity segregation tests were carried out by directionally freezing gallium using the Bridgman rnethd, modified in that the molten gallium is lowered out of a furnace into a slush of dry ice and trichloroethylene, thus minimizing supercooling. Since the gallium is contained vertically, the oxide film is in contact only with the tail end of the melt. It was found that Teflon makes an excellent crucible for gallium since it is quite pure, non-reactive, translucent, flexible, machinable, and is not wet by gallium. The gallium crystals could be grown at various speeds, and the melt could be vigorously stirred by a Teflon rod moving through the gallium in a vertical reciprocating fashion. Single crystals could be grown by placing a solid Teflon plug at the bottom of the melt drilled out in such a way to cause the solidifying gallium to follow a winding path. Thus, even if many crystals are originally nucleated, only one grain will predominate. The grain structure of the gallium crystals was revealed by an etchant composed of equal volumes of HC1, HNO3 and HF, diluted with water to half strength. Emission spectrographic analyses were carried out on samples removed from the front and tail ends of the resulting gallium ingots. Typical results of this study are summarized in Table I. The rate of freezing in all three cases was about 1 in. per hr. It can be seen that even though stirring of the melt does help, it is even more important to grow a single crystal of Ga in order to obtain good segregation of impurities. The effect of crys-tallinity on the segregation of impurities was previously observed6 in the directional freezing of germanium; however, in this case, the effect was much less pronounced. This dependence of impurity segregation on the crystalline perfection of Ga may be related to its thermal conductivity which is the most anisotropic of all metals.7 The anisotropic thermal conductivity can cause the solid-liquid interface to be nonuniform, thus leading to trapping of impurities during freeing, and therefore reduced segregation. In conclusion, it is indicated that zone refining of gallium would be more successful if seeding and similar precautions are taken to insure single crystal growth. The authors are indebted to Mr. H. The machines and methods that will ensure optimum production will depend upon the location and characteristics of the seam to be mined. Although the amount of dust that will be actually recovered in the six main dust-control systems cannot be accurately stated until the tests mentioned previously are carried out, it is estimated that the average air entering the wet collectors will contain around 5 grains of dust particles per cubic foot. This means that the six systems handling a total of about 133,000 cu.ft. of air per minute will return about 68 1/2 tons of dust to the concentrator per day and since the copper in this dust will average around 2 per cent, the total recovery is approximately 1.37 tons of copper every 24 hours. This important copper recovery is not due entirely to the dust-control system since in a plant without control only the duct that is dispersed to the atmosphere represents a loss. A conservative estimate of the recovery of copper solely due to the dust control system would be about half of the total or approximately 0.70 tons of copper per day.

At Black Lake, Quebec, Lake Asbestos of Quebec Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Smelting and Refining Co., has opened a $36-million mining and milling operation which will produce about 100,000 tons of asbestos fiber a year and add 7 pct to the Free World's supply. The orebody once lay beneath Black Lake, and readying the ore deposit for open pit mining meant removing about 37 million cu yd of overburden- 30 million cu yd by dredging and pumping, and 7 million by power shovels and trucks. The enormous amount of material to be dredged, control of drainage during dredging, the need to cope with drainage problems in the area and to provide for flood control to replace the regulating effect of the lake, posed unusual engineering challenges and required tremendous capital investment.

Many have been prone to credit the decline of professional interest in some branches of mineral industry education to the industrialists and other agencies who use our graduates. We hear the cry that industrial salaries are too low, opportunities for advancement do not exist, and the mineral industry specifically and generally is not interested in the engineer's efforts. Perhaps the time now has come when we should "dress-ranks," examine our practices, and publicize and encourage advanced technical training instead of laying all our troubles elsewhere. There can be no doubt but that industry is interested and stands ready and willing to co-operate. This is demonstrated by the numerous grants-in-aid and co-operative industrial projects which have been made available to those relatively few schools which have been encouraging graduate study and research. There is no dearth of research problems in any of the mineral industry fields and the sooner we realize the great opportunities for constructive, technical research in all areas of our profession the sooner we will reap the benefits of our engineering enterprises by closer liaison and broader understanding with industry. ONE time or another placer mining attracts the attention of a large number of people, because of the possible low initial investment, low operating cost, and quick returns. Much has been said about sampling and operating placer deposits but many are still inclined to jump at a property without giving much, if any, consideration to proper sampling. This statement does not apply to experienced mining engineers but I am hoping that readers will tear out this article and pass it along where it will do the most good and thus help to preserve the reputation of legitimate mining. It would appear that some people have an ability to sink test pits in high-grade gravel that is positively uncanny. THE crystal orientation in silicon iron that has been given a particular treatment described by Goss,1 has been studied by Goss, by Bozorth2 and by Sixtus,3 but their results do not agree and are almost entirely qualita-tive. The following pages give a description of the orientation of the crystals in the material as determined by means of X-rays and expressed graphically in a pole figure. The treatment consists of hot-rolling the material into strip and then giving it two cycles of cold reduction followed by recrystallization. This produces remarkably good properties in the rolling direction, the product having a maximum permeability in this direction of more than 25,000 and a permeability at 16,000 Gauss of more than 2200, It is now generally agreed that Goss's original conclusion' that the crystals in the final product are randomly oriented was incorrect, since Bozorth2 and Sixtus,3 using different methods, have shown that there is a decided preference in orientation. Those writers, however, expressed their results only in terms of one or more ideal orientations with deviations therefrom.

Although the term "spalling" has long been known, Norton l first referred to its usage for the fracture or disintegration of materials subjected to rapid temperature changes. Spalling of ceramic materials at high temperatures has received attention in the past. Removal of the char formed during ablation in re-entry of space vehicles has been referred to as mechanical spalling. The first experiments to evaluate the process of rock fragmentation by thermal spalling were conducted by Stoces using a series of gasoline burners on the quartz veins of the Zinnwald deep mines in Germany. After the development of rocket-jet burners, the principles of 'thermal spalling combined with high fluid momentum found wide practical application in rocks. The well-known jet piercing process for drilling blastholes in taconite and for jet channeling in the quarrying of granite are among the more notable of these application^.

The major consideration in any management and engineering decision is the economic evaluation of factors. The right decision is the best cost decision, provided of course that it is the safest. Changes, improvements, and advances in mining technology, as in any business, come about through the pressure of economics in combination with the inventiveness and engineering abilities of efficient mine operators. Without proper economic evaluation and an appreciation of profit and loss of an operation, advances in mining methods would come about at a slow pace, if at all.

IN recognition of thirty-one years' service as professor of mining in McGill University the friends of Dr. Porter gave him a complimentary dinner at Montreal, on Jan. 24. The affair was appropriately held under the auspices of the Montreal Branch of the Canadian Insti-tute of Mining and Metallurgy, George C. Riley presid-ing, and was made the occasion of presentation to him of a Canadian landscape painted by Maurice Cullen, and of a silver plate to Mrs. Porter. Among those speaking were Messrs. George E. Cole, F. D. Adams, Sir Arthur Currie, W. C. McBride, and J. G. Ross. Mr. Cole spoke of the large part Professor, Porter had played in the development of mining in Canada through training the men who had become the leaders in the work. More than 200 mining engineers graduated from the University during Dr. Porter's tenure of office and while not all of them had continued to practise their profession, as a body they had had an immense influence.

INTRODUCTION In the preceding chapters we have discussed the various elements of mineral economic analysis, their interrelationships, and the most accepted and advanced techniques by which these elements are manipulated to provide the decision maker quantitative measurements for judging alternate investment opportunities. Regardless of how carefully the economic evaluation is made, and how comprehensive the study of economic parameters has been, uncertainty still remains a significant factor in the outcome of the analysis. The investor or money manager is acutely aware of the uncertainty factor. Many of the economic parameters are functions of economic forecasts and value estimates that can- not be known with any degree of certainty. The postulated DCF-ROR is based upon certain estimates representing "best guess" values, and a single point parameter DCF-ROR analysis represents a combination of "best guesses." The wise decision maker looks at such an analysis and asks the "what if" questions. What if the production cost is 10% higher than the estimate? What if there is an overrun in construction costs? What if the mineral price falls lower than expected? What will be the effect of a higher royalty rate? Many more such questions may arise in trying to assess the total risk involved in funding a mineral project. Prior to the advent of the computer it was difficult to answer all such anticipated questions because of the many laborious calculations involved. Now, with the aid of the computer, most of these questions can be answered by the analyst at the same time the original computations are made by using the process of sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis shows the effect of critical parameter changes upon the DCF-ROR or other profitability measure. When probability of occurrence can be associated with the various parameter value levels, sensitivity analysis becomes probabilistic analysis, and the risk factor can be quantitized in terms of total probability. SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS The determination of the sensitivity of the profitability index (usually the DCF-ROR) to changes in the various economic parameters, taking them one at a time, is called sensitivity analysis. The analysis may be performed for any number of parameters involved in the DCF-ROR computation. Generally, in mineral evaluations the most sensitive and most tested parameters are: the metal or mineral price, the operating cost, the annual production grade, and the initial capital invest-

A beat-conduction model has been developed to study the flow of fluids in a stratified oil reservoir which is being subjected to unsteady-state depletion. To simulate stratification, plates of different metals were joined together so that cross flow could occur between strata. A description of the model, plate construction and necessary instruments is included. The data indicate that stratified oil reservoirs experiencing cross flow may be treated as a single, homogeneous, producing sand having properties intermediate between those of the layers making up the system. A technique for averaging core-analysis data to arrive at the proper average value of rock permeability and porosity is presented INTRODUCTION Although oil has been produced from reservoirs for 100 years and reservoir injection processes have been undertaken for 40 years, the industry is still inadequately informed on the problem of reservoir inhomogeneities. Stratification is perhaps the best-known type of reservoir heterogeneity. Urenl discussed the possible significance of this nonuniformity in his 1927 paper on the theoretical aspects of water flooding. Since this time the problem of vertical permeability variations has been the subject of much discussion and numerous papers. Levorsen2 simply describes the origin of layered beds in his Geology of Petroleum. Some beds are field-wide and may be traced from well to well, while others apparently pinch-out and become discontinuous. In addition, the physical characteristics of a layer may vary from place to place. For these reasons, a stratified system is not easily defined. In calculations involving oil reservoirs in which permeabi1ities vary, methods presently used contain many simplifying assumptions. The reservoir frequently is considered as consisting of permeable layers, each of uniform vertical and lateral permeability and each behaving as if separated from adjacent layers by thin impermeable layers. Other assumptions frequently made in reservoir calculations are steady-state flow conditions, unit mobility ratio, linear geometry, average or homogeneous porosity, and negligible capillary-pressure and gravity effects. Muskat3 has. developed solutions to the stratification problem for mobility ratios other than unity for both linear and exponential permeability distributions. He assumes lateral uniformity and continuity of all productive strata and does not consider porosity. This study will take into account transient effects, cross flow and varying porosity, as well as the variations in permeability, by means of a heat analogy. Muskat5 has shown the similarity of the equations which describe the flow of fluids in a porous medium to the flow of heat through a solid. Landrum, et al,6 made an analogy between the flow of fluid in an unsymmetrical reservoir and the conduction of heat in a similarly shaped metal plate. This analogy is summarized briefly as follows. If fluid is produced from an oil reservoir above the bubble point, the resulting pressure distribution will be identical to the temperature which would result in a metal or heat-conducting plate if heat were similarly removed. This means that a study of heat flow in stratified thermal models will behave like fluid flow in stratified oil reservoirs. For mathematical correspondencies, set- Ref. 6. The fluid mobility k/p is proportional to the thermal conductivity, and the porosity-times-compressibility product is proportional to the density times specific heat of the thermal plate. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE The stratified reservoir model used in this study is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. A Leeds and Northrup Speedomax Type G temperature recorder
