It has been stated, by Sir James M. Barrie, that "the man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it". The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the; students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression ". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student's taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. The phases and equilibria in the W-Co-C system have been studied by X-ray diffraction methods, metallographic technique, and thermal analysis. In addition to the 7 phase, two double carbides, called 8 and have been revealed. The compositions correspond to CO3 W6C2 and Co3-W10C4. The reactions leading to these phases have been explained and tentative diagrams of stable and metastable equilibria proposed. The basic reactions in sintering cobalt cemented tungsten carbides are discussed. THE W-Co-C system is of fundamental importance in practical carbide manufacturing as well as for the understanding of the sintering mechanism. Surprisingly little is known about this system, for the probable reason that all the important alloys are of two-phase structure and that the diagram Co-WC has been treated as a quasi-binary. This obviously is incorrect, because WC decomposes before melting. One ternary phase, 7, of composition Co3W3C has long been known. It was first studied by Adelskold, Sundelin, and Westgren,1 although the isomorphous iron-tungsten carbide was known earlier. There have been in the literature several reports of two 7 phases.' " Also the 7 phase has been considered unstable by Takeda4 and Westgren.1 The Co-WC diagram has been studied by Wyman and Kelley5 and a quasi-binary diagram has been published by Sandford and Trent.2 Takeda has published a tentative Co-W-C diagram, considering both metastable and stable equilibria. However, the lines of two-fold saturation are shown only partially and it seems impossible to complete the diagram without violating the phase theory. Therefore it seemed desirable to examine the system in more detail. Experimental Procedure The alloys used in the present investigation were made of powders of tungsten, tungsten monocarbide, cobalt, and carbon and were of the grade used in manufacture of commercial cemented carbides. The powders were ground and mixed in small stainless steel ball mills, using balls of the same material. Benzene was used as a dispersing agent. The mixing period was 1 hr, since this was shown to give suffi- ciently good mixing of the powders without too great a contamination from the mill. After ball milling, the specimens were pressed in cylindrical or rectangular dies. No paraffin or other lubricant was used and the small compacts had sufficient green strength to be handled without difficulty. Several sintering furnaces were employed. The most satisfactory arrangement was a vacuum furnace based on the Arsem principle which employed a graphite helix as the resistance heating element. Specimens were placed on graphite stands and there was generally a slight carburization or decarburiza-tion of the specimen surface, depending on the carbon content of the alloy. The evaporation of the cobalt at a sintering temperature of 1400°C was not significant, but became severe at 1500°C and higher. The sintering time was 1 hr at 2000°C and 2 to 4 hr at lower temperatures. It was not possible to quench the specimens, but the cooling rates were rather fast, greater than 300°C in the first minute. In the system under investigation, the reactions are sluggish, and it is believed that the high temperature structures are satisfactorily retained. The principal method of investigating the sintered specimens was X-ray diffraction by the Norelco recording spectrometer. Approximate determinations of the phase boundaries were made by the disappearing phase method. Ternary Phases To study the phase formation in W-Co-C system, a series of specimens was sintered at 1400°C. In this experiment two ternary phases, called here ? and k were formed in addition to the well-known 7 phase. The 7 phase, which has been completely described by Westgren: showed a range of homogeneity from 7 to 20 pct C and from 38 to 48 pct Co. At 1400°C the 7 phase was found to be in equilibrium with monotungsten carbide, 8, tungsten, 8, #?, and liquid. The boundaries toward #? and liquid were difficult to determine and appeared to be very temperature sensitive. The other boundaries are believed to be well fixed. An exploratory study of the 60 wt pct Mg and 80 wt pct Mg sections of the solid constitution in the magnesium-rich region of the Mg-Al-Ca-Zn system was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to determine the general configuration of the phase fields with respect to the magnesium solid solution in this complex system. The 335°C (635°F) tetrahedron was selected for study because the solid constitutions of the bounding ternary systems—Mg-Al-Zn,1 Mg-A1-Ca,2 Mg-Ca-zn3—were well known and, at least in these ternary systems, diffusion was rapid enough at 335°C for equilibrium to be reached fairly rapidly. Metallography and powder X-ray diffraction were selected as the best corroboratory methods for determining the solid phase equilibria. A total of forty-six quaternary alloys on the 60 wt Mg and 80 wt Mg sections were prepared, annealed to equilibrium at 335°C, and the phases present identified. Singly sublimed (99.99 pct) magnesium, electrolytic (99.99 pct) zinc, high-purity (99.99 pct) aluminum, and USP calcium were alloyed in graphite crucibles under a chloride flux and chill cast into a split graphite mold. Alloy samples were sealed under argon in Pyrex vials and annealed at 335°C ± 1/2° for a minimum of 500 hr. At the conclusion of the anneal, the alloy samples were quenched rapidly in ice water. Standard metallographic procedures for magnesium alloys were used. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were taken on a G. E. Camera with a diameter of 14.32 cm using nickel filtered copper radiation. The phase equilibria in the 60 wt pct Mg section of the 335°C (635°F) tetrahedron is shown in Fig. 1. The complex equilibria in the zinc-rich region were not accurately determined and are shown only tentatively with dotted lines. The equilibria of the three bounding ternary 335°C sections from pure magnesium to 60 wt pct Mg are also shown as though folded away from the tetrahedron. The 80 wt pct Mg section has the same configuration of phase fields as that shown in Fig. 1. Thus it is reasonable to conclude that in higher magnesium sections, the same relative configuration of phase fields is maintained though the relative proportions of the individual phase fields may change slightly as the magnesium solid solution is approached. Note that all the ternary phases present in these ternary diagrams enter into the quaternary equilibria with the exception of the phase of the Mg-Al-Zn system which becomes unstable with the addition of as little as 1/2 pct Ca. No quaternary intermetallic phases were found. No liquid phase was detected in any of the quaternary alloys annealed at 335°C suggesting that if a quaternary eu-tectic exists, it must lie between 335°C and 339°C, the temperature of the ternary eutectic in the Mg-Al-Zn system.

There are no data available of shipments until 1858, and then estimated, when railroad service became available. By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.

0. C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I have merely glanced over this paper, consequently, I am hardly in a position to discuss it intelligently. There is one thing, however, that is of interest, that is, the claim that the oil mixture which they have chosen is the best adapted to the work at hand. I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson if they still feel that that is the case-if that really does give the best grade of concentration and the best extraction for the same money, compared to any particular oil mixture which they could get. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-We are still using that mixture, and we consider it the most economical mixture used. DAVID COLE, El Paso, Texas.-I would like to ask Mr. Ralston if there are some other mixtures that would be better? E. P. MATHEWSON.-We are open to suggestions. 0. C. RALSTON.-My own paper on oils* calls attention to the fact that certain hardwood oils, especially the tars, are now being burned or wasted. A great deal of hardwood tar is available as low as 4 or 5 c. per gallon, that being its value as fuel under the boilers. As a matter of fact, a great deal of testing has been done with only the commercial products that are as a usual ride sold on the market. Very little hardwood tar is sold on the market. In asking a great many people who have tested flotation oils, I have not heard hardwood tar mentioned very often. I think I would add to that that the hardwood tars can probably be bought in quantity comparable with the sludge acid at Anaconda, and. should contain a greater proportion of the frothing constituent, and at a price fairly commensurate with what they pay for the sludge acid. E. P. MATHEWSON.-I would like to make a correction in one statement I made that there has been no change made in the mixture. This change has been made: We found that the amount of wood creosote in treating the sand from tables was extremely small, and we tried some experiments on a large scale, dropping it out and using simply the sludge acid and sulphuric acid. We found that this gave practically as good results as wood creosote. We use wood creosote in treating the slimes. We find it necessary in that operation. In the quantitative interpretation of the SP logs, the electrochemical component is generally taken equal to — K log Rm /Rw where K has the theoretical value corresponding to solutions of pure sodium chloride. This method may be misleading when relatively large quantities of salts other than NaCl are present in form-rrtion waters—as is generally the case for low salinities —or in gyp-base muds. In such cases recourse is made in the field to changing the K value or to adding a correction term to the equation on the basis of local experience. An investigation has been made in the laboratory of the influence of HCO3, SO4=, Ca++, and Mg++ on the amplitude of the SP deflection, which included in par-ricular determinations of the activity coefficients of Ca++ and Mg++. The theory, the experimental techniques and a tentative method for applying the results are described. So far, applications to actual field cases where chemical analyses of waters were available have provided an excellent confirmation of the proposed method. The case of the SP in very salty brines is also considered and it is shown that the use of activity data for sodium gives satisfactory results. HISTORICAL In early times of electrical logging, the SP curve was used exclusively as a tool for the location of permeable beds and the definition of their boundaries. Later, with the introduction of methods of quantitative analysis, attention was called to the possibility of deriving from the SP log some information on the formation water resistivity, which constitutes one essential element for the computation of water saturation from log data. The first laboratory experiments' in 1932 had shown that, as a result of electrochemical phenomena arising at the contact of the niud and the formation, the amplitude of the deflection of the SP curve was, at least partly, a function of the salt concentration of interstitial water and accordingly of its resistivity. It was indicated that the amplitude of the electrochemical component of the SP should be equal to K log R1/R2, R1 and R2 being the resistivities of the mud and of the formation water respectively. However, the exact value of the K coefficient was not determined at that time because the surface clay used for a laboratory model was far from an ideal shale membrane. Consequently, the way was not yet open towards quantitative interpretation. In the early forties, Tixier reported2, on the basis of field log observations, the following equation for the case of NaCl solutions, SP = -71 log f1c1/f2c2, c1 and c2 being the concentrations and f1, f2 the mean activity coefficients. The local variations observed in the empirical values of K, chiefly in the Rocky Mountains, led him to advance the opinion that, besides the relative amounts, the nature of the salts present in the solutions had a bearing on the magnitude of the SP. At about the same time Mounce and Rust- ad published laboratory results which emphasized the part played by the shale in the generation of the SP. On the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical considerations, Wyllie in 1948' published the following equation of the electrochemical SP for the case of NaCl solutions, SP= - 71 log (a1)m/(a2)m

Subsidence is controlled by a complex com¬bination of mining and geologic factors. For example, a compilation of worldwide data shows that, as the percentage of shale in the overlying rock mass decreases and the amount of sandstone increases, the angle of draw (and the area affected by subsidence) decreases. Limestone in the over¬burden appears to cause a more than twofold decrease in the angle of draw compared to a like amount of sandstone. Increased amounts of sandstone were accompanied by a greater surface subsidence relative to the mining height. The total thickness of overburden did not appear to influence the subsidence magnitude above super-critical panels. The greater the thickness extracted, the smaller percentage of that thickness shows up at the surface as subsidence. The greater the percent of the seam extracted, the greater the subsidence reaching the surface. The maximum subsidence above room-and-pillar panels de¬pends on the pillar height and minimum width as well as the other factors listed.

A dinner was given to Ambrose Swasey by the United Engineering Society, at the Engineers' Club, on November 14. Those present -included -twenty-one presidents and past presidents of the Founder Societies. Charles F. Rand, President of United Engineering Society, presided. President Robert S. Woodward, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, and Dr. Robert W. Hunt, of Chicago, made addresses to which Mr. Swasey responded. Dr. Michael I. Pupin, Chairman of Engineering Foundation, made the closing address. The evening was marked by the high character of the addresses, inspiration for grave duties lying before the engineering profession, and by the spirit of good fellowship. The auto-oxidation of sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid in commercially produced barren and recycle liquors, containing 1.66 and 4.56 gpl Fe respectively, from Elliot Lake was studied. A gas mixture, containing 3.5% SO2 and air was introduced into these liquors through a frit at a rate of 6.0g SO2 per hour per liter of solution. The barren and recycle were heated to 60°C. At the end of the first 24 hours of the process the concentrations of acid produced were 158 and 220 gpl H2SO4 for the barren and recycle respectively. Corresponding conversion efficiencies were 70 and 83%. In the period from 24 to 36 hours the rate of acid production decreased so that the H2SO4 concentrations at the end of 36 hours were 180 gpl for the barren and 260 gpl for the recycle; average conversions for the initial 36 hours were 55 and 68% respectively. Many investigators1'2'3 have considered the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to form sulfuric acid in aqueous solutions containing metallic ions. A summary of the work performed on this subject prior to 1946 has been presented by Keyes4 who described the auto-oxidation process as follows. Keyes also suggested that in this second reaction ferric ion serves as a catalyst for the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid. Neytzell-de Wilde and Taverner5 have reported on the use of auto-oxidation to produce a 4 to 5% sulfuric acid solution for use in a cyclic leach process at South African uranium plants. This paper describes investigations carried out to determine the feasibility of using the auto-oxidation process to produce sulfuric acid solutions of as high concentration as possible using commercially produced uranium plant barren and recycle liquors from the Elliot Lake region of Ontario. These liquors contained 1.66 and 4.56 gpl respectively of iron, chiefly in the ferrous state. This investigation is of particular interest to the uranium producers in Elliot Lake where the ores contain 3 to 4% sulfur, as sulfides. Flotation of these sulfides and roasting of same to produce SO, bearing gases have been successfully demonstrated using conventional methods.6'7 Barren and recycle solutions, as described previously, are also produced in large tonnages by these uranium producers. The experimental method and apparatus used to examine the auto-oxidation process will be described first. Then the tests carried out on laboratory prepared aqueous solutions containing ferric sulfate to determine optimum conditions will be presented. The next section will describe the tests using the commercial barren and recycle liquors. A final section will summarize the conclusions of the work. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURES Two types of solutions were used in the tests, a laboratory prepared aqueous solution containing definite amounts of ferric sulfate, and commercially produced iron bearing solution obtained from a uranium leaching plant in the Elliot Lake area. Two liters of a solution to be examined were placed in a 3 in. diam by 30 in. long glass cylinder with a cross-sectional area of 7 sq in. A mixture of air, and SO2 supplied from a lecture bottle for convenience, was introduced into the bottom of the vessel through a standard 30 mm glass frit, 700 sq mm in area. The temperature of the apparatus was controlled by a heating tape and variable transformer. Exhaust gases were vented to atmosphere. At the end of the test period the gas flow was shut off and the solution was analysed for H2SO4, Fe ++, and Fe +++, by conventional means. Four variables were examined using the laboratory prepared aqueous solution of ferric sulfate. First, the effect of SO2 concentration, from 1 to 1076, in the feed gas mixture was considered. Returning the original soil material to the surface of smoothed mine spoils is a practical means of restoring agricultural productivity. Research has established that high-sodium spoils in North Dakota: (1) must be covered with about 70 cm of soil material to achieve maximum production; (2) top-soil must be segregated and spread separately from subsoil; (3) potential production depends on the quality of the soil material returned; and (4) erosion and upward salt movement must be controlled for sustained production. Erosion is best controlled by reducing final grades as much as possible during the smoothing process followed by prompt establishment of vegetation.

ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-

The Y-Al- C ternary phase diagram for the com -position range from 55 to 100 at. pct Y and for a temperature of 950°C has been constructed from metallographic and X-ray diffraction data. The significant features of the isothermal section which is presented are the small solubility of aluminum in the binary Y3C phase and the presence of a ternary carbide phase with a small homogeneity range around the composition Y3AlC. The similarity in structure and composition between these two carbide phases is discussed in the light of the misci-bility gap which exists between room temperature and 1300°C, which was the temperature range studied. THE occurrence and stability criteria of ternary T3BC, carbide phases having the L&apos;12 structure and the general formula T3BCx have been discussed in detail by stadelmaier1 and more recently by the present authors., Stadelmaier found many representatives of these phases formed between the T metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni and the B metals Mg, Al, Zn, Ca, Ge, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, T1, and Pb. The present authors reported on a new series of iso-structural carbide phases formed between the T metals of the Sc group and the B metal, aluminum. These new phases are unique in that many of the Sc group elements form stable binary carbide phases which occur about the composition T3C and which crystallize with a structure similar to that of the T9BCx ternary carbide phases. Furthermore, these binary and ternary phases are found to coexist in equilibrium with each other. The similarity in structure and composition between, for example, Y3C and Y3AlC in the light of the mis-cibility gap which had been found to exist between these two phases indicated a need for a more thorough knowledge of the phase relations which occur in alloys based upon these compositions. Consequently, an investigation of the phase equilibria in the yttrium-rich portion of the Y-A1-C phase diagram was undertaken. The limiting Y-A1 binary diagram determined by Lundin and Klodt3 and the results of Spedding et al.4 governing the Y3C phase were used as guides in , constructing the diagram. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys weighing about 10 g were prepared by arc-melting powder compacts made from the various components on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode in a gettered argon atmosphere. Good homogeneity was obtained by melting the alloys three times. The purity of the yttrium used was 99.9 pct (0.07 pct rare earths). The purity of the aluminum and the carbon was 99.99 pct. The results of chemical analysis on five representative alloys showed that losses during the alloying process were predominantly carbon losses and that in no instance did the measured concentration of this component differ by more than 3 at. pct from the intended composition. For this reason the alloy compositions which are reported are those of the charges prepared for melting. Three alloys which were analyzed for copper, tungsten, nitrogen, and oxygen compositions showed that no contamination had occurred either during casting or during the subsequent annealing treatments. Solution mining got back in the news recently when Kalium Chemicals, Ltd., a joint subsidiary of Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Armour & Co. announced its plans to go full speed ahead in mining potash by the solution method in its vast holdings 30 miles west of Regina, Saskatchewan. The company is keeping the technical details of this mining technique under wraps for competitive reasons, but company officials insist that the major difficulties in solution mining of potash have been overcome and that the final product will have definite competitive advantages on the open market. Kalium&apos;s holdings in the Regina area total about 500 sq mi. The ore-primarily sylvite mixed with appreciable quantities of halite-occurs in the Prairie Evaporite formation at a depth of 5300 ft. The ore zone averages about 100 ft in thickness. Too deep to be economically mined by conventional underground methods, such as is being done at International Minerals & Chemical Corp.&apos;s Esterhazy mine (depth about 3100 ft), Kalium gambled that it could develop a successful method of solution mining even though earlier attempts in Germany, the U.S., and Canada had failed.

Introduction SINCE about 70 per cent. of the total cost of mining is due to underground work which is out of sight, it is essential that expenditures should be made here to the best advantage. A great many mistakes have been made which were expensive, but perhaps these have not even been detected by mine owners. In the future these may be minimized to some extent, especially if there is cooperative effort on the part of each employee. I have been interested in this subject for some years and have tried to deduce principles and methods. These have proved highly advantageous and may also be of help to others. Some corporations, like the United States Steel, and the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have done a great deal in this field by having stated meetings of their organizations, with the view to interchanging ideas among their men and educating them along the lines of concerted effort. Since no man knows all about the various branches of mining, it is advisable that frequent meetings of the operating department be held for the interchange of ideas and that all members of the organization have an opportunity to express themselves on the various subjects. It has often been found that in discussions between heads of departments, foremen and bosses, many valuable suggestions may be obtained which promote the best interests of the company. The method regarded as the most conducive to cooperative effort, and pursued by the organization, is to analyze and develope the different phases of various mining subjects at regular meetings.

THE heavy media separation process plays an outstanding role in the concentration of 4000 tons of zinc ore per day at the Mascot mill of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee. Of the total tonnage, 72 pct is treated in the heavy media separation plant to reject 56 pct of the ore as a coarse tailing, which has a ready market. Concentrates from this separation are beneficiated further by jigging and flotation. Approximately 25 pct of the total zinc concentrate production is made in the jig mill. Jig tailings are ground and pumped to the flotation circuit where the balance of the production is made. Fig. 1 shows a generalized flowsheet of the mill. The Mascot ore is a lead-free, honey-colored sphalerite in dolomitic limestone, with lesser amounts of chert and some pyrite. A mineralogical analysis is given in Table I. After 10 years of successful operation with galena medium and treatment of nearly 10,000,000 tons of ore, a decision to convert to ferrosilicon was made early in 1948 because of the increasing price of galena and consequent high operating costs. The conversion was made on Nov. 6, 1948, and the results obtained since that time have shown remarkable improvement over those made with galena. The Table I. For entire life of galena operation, a credit of 40 pct of the value of the new galena added was realized from the sale of waste galena. comparisons given in this report cover the first 6 months of 1950 as representing the ferrosilicon operation, and the year 1947 as representing the galena operation. This was the last full year in which galena was used exclusively and is representative of the best work done during the 10 years of operation with this medium. After only 2 years&apos; operating experience, with ferrosilicon and treatment of 1,807,585 tons many advantages have been revealed and are summarized in Table 11. Development Prior to the introduction of the heavy media process, all the mill feed was crushed through 5/8 in. and treated by jigging. A finished tailing assaying 0.66 pct Zn was made on rougher bull jigs, and cleaner jig tailings were ground for treatment by flotation. The first test work on the sink-and-float method of mineral beneficiation was carried out at Mascot in 1935, using a 3-ft cone and galena medium for batch tests. The following year a 6-ft cone was installed for pilot-plant work. This unit became a part of the mill circuit on March 1, 1936, and handled a gradually increasing tonnage in the next 2 years as the process developed to the point where it could treat all the + 3/8-in. material in the mill feed. Coarse jigging was then discontinued on March 1, 1939, and all coarse tailings have been made by the heavy media separation plant since that time. Feed Preparation: The original feed preparation plant consisted of a drag washer followed by two 4x10-ft Allis-Chalmers washing screens. A surge bin and two additional 5x12-ft AC washing screens were added in 1943. Use of primary and secondary washing screens was found essential to provide the cleanest possible feed for the cone and thereby avoid excessive contamination of the galena medium. Improved washing was obtained by replacing the drag washer with a 7x20-ft Allis-Chalmers scrubber, shown in Fig. 2, which has been in service since May 1944. Throughout the life of the galena operation, delivery of extremely muddy ore to the mill overloaded the medium cleaning system, and it frequently was necessary to cut off the feed and clean the medium for several hours until its normal viscosity had been re-established. REPUBLIC STEEL CORP. and Armco Steel Corp. have joined in a $160,000,000 project for the production of iron ore from Taconite in the Lake Superior mining region. The two companies announced acquisition in equal shares of 100 pct ownership of the stock of Reserve Mining Co., which controls a vast deposit of magnetic Taconite iron ore on the eastern end of the Mesabi range in Minnesota. Through Reserve Mining the two companies will build a plant for manufacturing high grade ore from Taconite near Beaver Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. The first announcement calls for about a $60,000,000 plant which will be built as soon as plans are completed and will have an annual capacity of about 2,500,000 tons of iron ore pellets. Longer range development plans call for future expansion of the plant to provide an annual capacity of 10,000,000 tons. This will amount to an additional investment of

DURING the past 25 years the steelmaker has experienced some difficulty in producing steel to meet the standards established by the metallurgist. In contrast to the past, when a chemical specification of broad limits was the only requirement, he now has to employ such tests as microscopic, macroscopic, tensile, impact, Magnaflux and even X-ray and supersonic. The development of these tests has more than set the pace for a manufacturing process of which the exactness still hinges to an important degree on the ability of the furnace operator. In our efforts to produce steel, and especially alloy steel, to meet the exactness of modern engineering specification, many factors must be taken into account. It is not sufficient to make a good heat of steel in the furnace and then be satisfied that the job is done, since there are many pitfalls between the furnace and the finished product. The literature abounds with information on melting practices, deoxidation methods and slag control, but the lack of positive information about what happens when the steel is teemed into molds is quite evident. Such questions as what is the proper mold size, shape and thickness; which is the best mold coating; what is the best rate of pour for any given steel, and what is the effect of cooling rates on quality, are still answered by opinions. It is acknowledged that a poor heat of steel cannot be improved in the pouring pit. On the other hand, a good heat can be ruined by improper handling after it leaves the furnace.

Discussion of the paper of B. H. Dunshee, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 30, August, 1913, pp. 1511 to 1531. GEORGE E. MOULTHROP, Butte, Mont.:-The recording for the first time by Mr. Dunshee, in a readily usable form, of the various systems of square-set framing applied in the Butte district is a valuable contribution to mining information. The many different methods of framing employed, due to the individual ideas of superintendents and foremen of segregated companies, have given full opportunity to determine the best framing for the conditions as found in these mines, and the final adoption of a system uniform for all the mines has come about through a study of these various methods and an experience covering a period of many years. The sawed 10 by 10 in. and 12 by 12 in. timbers undoubtedly give the best satisfaction; and the style of framing the sawed timber that under all conditions has given the best practical results is that used in the Anaconda group and other mines, described and recommended by Mr. Dunshee. In this framing the posts have a horn 2 in. high and 6 in. square, the cap end having dimensions of 3 by 6 in. Instead of the framed girt shown in the drawings of the Anaconda group, the 6 by 10 in. girt adopted at some other mines, which fits into the cap and post framing with no other preparation than cutting the timber to the necessary length, fills all the necessary requirements for strength and affects a material saving in timber and labor. This, as Mr. Dunshee states, is without doubt the type of framing which would be adopted as a standard for 10 by 10 in. sawed timbers if sawed timber sets were to be used in the future generally. But saw-timber for the mines was becoming scarce and expensive, and round timber for the square sets furnished an alternative which provided, at greatly reduced cost, material which in every way supplied the requirements of the mining conditions. The use of the round timber with a satisfactory framing makes available a conveniently located and large source of supply which up to this time has served no useful industrial purpose. Particularly is this true of small timber, which is still standing in great quantities in the forests where the trees more desirable for commercial purposes have already been cut and marketed.

Personal gain seems to be the most powerful incentive to economic progress. One of my first exposures to this phenomenon was the comparison between company stopes and leaser&apos;s stopes in a vein gold mine. The company stopes were 4 to 6 ft wide, whereas the leaser&apos;s stopes were so narrow that in some places one could not turn around. The company leased only that ground it felt was marginal to mine with day&apos;s- pay miners, but by skillful, careful and energetic mining, the leasers managed in most cases to make money for themselves and the company. The Hurting Truth This capitalist system, which puts a premium on successful risk taking, is under attack. Not that it hasn&apos;t been under attack all along. What hurts and angers us at this time is that the attack comes from the children of the system-its youth. Such blasphemy should, of course, be eradicated, root and branch. Or should it? Are we hurt in part because some of the things they say are true?

A STUDY by J. R. Low, Jr.1 on the effect of quench aging on the Charpy-impact specimens of semikilled 1020 steel disclosed that a decrease in cooling rate from 1275°F raised the transition temperature. This was demonstrated in his investigation by controlling the cooling rate of impact specimens to duplicate that of a heavier plate and com- paring the properties with air-cooled specimens and quenched specimens. The transition temperature of the samples that had been cooled at a rate estimated to be similar to that of an air-cooled 3/4 in. plate was approximately 45ºF higher than the quenched samples. The transition temperature of the air-cooled series was between that of the slow-cooled and the quenched series.
