THE province of Saskatchewan, situated in the center of the Great Plains region of Canada, has, like most prairie areas, an essentially agricultural economy. Most of its population of about 860,000 is located in the southern half of the province in the farming and ranching areas. To the north of the prairie is a broad forested belt supporting a considerable timbering industry, and the northern one third of the province is glaciated pre-Cambrian rock formation. This latter area is relatively barren of vegetation, but the presence within it of a considerable variety of radioactive, noble and base metals, and industrial minerals has been shown by prospecting in recent years.' Glacial Geology The Keewatin ice sheet, considered to have accumulated in the country to the west of Hudson Bay in Pleistocene time, covered at its maximum advancement almost all of Saskatchewan and extended south of the international boundary. Only in the Cypress Hills in the southwest and around Wood Mountain in the south central portion of the province did the preglacial formations escape the action for this glacial period. The bedrock of the plains and forest areas therefore is overlain by moraines and modified glacial drift, which vary in thickness from a few feet to 400 or 500 ft.' Glacial action in the pre-Cambrian area of the province was largely erosional, most of the more recent formations and some of the pre-Cambrian rock being transported out of the area to the south and west. It has been estimated that about 13 pct of this area is composed of lakes and rivers not too adaptable to rail or water transportation, so that until the use of aviation for exploration purposes became general, development of the area was slow. To the south, the heavy mantle of glacial drift has to some extent deterred the discovery of industrial minerals in the bedrock underlying the forest and prairie regions3 At the same time, this drift contains numerous deposits of those most elementary and necessary industrial minerals, sand and gravel. Sedimentary Basin The major feature of the sedimentary deposits underlying the plains regions is the basinal structure known as the Moose Jaw syncline, which runs from the southeast corner of the province in a northwesterly direction. To the west of this syncline the formations curve upward, then have been faulted and further upthrust to appear at the surface in the foothills of the Rockies in Alberta; to the east and north they curve upward into Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan, but the surface contacts are covered mostly with glacial drift.238 The axis of the syncline dips to the southeast, so that there is also an upward trend of the formations along the axis to the northwest. In illustration of the regional structure underlying the province, the pre-Cambrian basement has been logged in drillholes at the following depths in several locations: Ogema (south central), 9390 ft; Gronlid (northeast), 2599 ft; Vera (northwest), 4422 ft; Big River (north northwest), 2348 ft. Fig. 1 indicates the general surface geology of the province, ignoring such glacial overburden as may overlie many of the bedrock formations. Also indicated is the approximate location of the axis of the Moose Jaw syncline.' Industrial Minerals Clays: The province is fortunate in possessing a widespread distribution of clays of ceramic value, ranging from those used for heavy structural products to the high grade pottery and china clays. Shales suitable for brick and tile production are found in the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary formations across the south of the province where the glacial drift is thin or nonexistent. Many deposits of glacial lake clays suitable for such wares are found scattered over the rest of the province south of the pre-Cambrian area. The Whitemud formation of the Upper Cretaceous is a narrow sedimentary band of secondary clays found intermittently at points across the south of the province where glacial action did not disturb or remove them.' In the southwest corner of the province, around Eastend in the Frenchman River valley, the refractory clays of this formation are contaminated somewhat with iron compounds or other alteration products of basaltic rocks. This eliminates the use of those clays in true whitewares, as they fire to creamy buff shades at the lower temperatures and to a blue-specked grey at cone 8 to 12, (2280°F to 2390°F), the range commonly used in firing whiteware. However, for use in the production of colored artware, caneware, stoneware or crockery, and sewerpipe, this type of clay makes an excellent body that requires little or no addition of flint, feldspar, or other fluxing materials such as are required in the higher class of ware.' It is not a grade of clay that can be shipped great distances to the manufacturing centers, but a market for considerable tonnages has developed at nearby Medicine Hat, where cheap natural gas is available for the firing of the ware. Farther east in the south central portion of the province, the clays of the Whitemud formation are generally more refractory and white burning. The formation is divided into three zones, consisting of white clays, brown shale, and white sandy clays.

In connection with the recent visit of the Special Mission of British Ministry of Munitions to the United States, the United Engineering Societies gave a dinner to the members of the. Mission on Tuesday evening, Nov. 13. This was the only public function on behalf of the visiting commissioners while they were in New York. During the remainder of their visit they were in daily conference with bankers, merchants' associations, labor federations, and other organizations. The result of these conferences will doubtless have an important influence on the manufacture of war supplies in the United States, since it will enable our business men and manufacturers to avoid a good many of the mistakes that unfortunately occurred in England at the beginning of the war. At present, fully 90 per cent. of the employees of British munition factories are omen, and the problem of employing women in the industries of the United States will doubtless soon be encountered with increasing frequency.

IN present-day flotation practice, grinding of the flotation feed is carried to extremely fine sizes, 70 to 80 per cent minus 200 mesh being customary. The greatest flotation losses occur in the coarsest and finest sizes, but the losses in the very fine sizes are, of course, much the more important because of the large proportion of fines in the feed. These losses are particularly high in zinc ores so a study of the effect of size on the flotation of sphalerite has been made. The mineral used in these experi¬ments was a pure sphalerite, especially free from copper, from the Joplin district in Missouri. The sizes coarser than 200 mesh were separated by screening, the sized mineral then being deslimed on a Wilfley table. The sizes finer than 200 mesh were obtained by water elutriation as described by H. R. Bradford (M. S. Thesis, University of Utah, 1932) ; particles finer than 6.5 microns could not be obtained with the apparatus used.

THE Institute of Metals Division of the A. I. M. E. has joined with the American Society for Steel Treating and the American Welding Society in support of National Metal Week in Philadelphia, Oct. 8 to 12. Individual and joint technical sessions, plant inspection trips, and a general exposition to be held in Commercial Museum have all been arranged. With the coming of the Institute of Metals Division into the circle, the scope of the exposition has been broadened to cover non-ferrous metals, and exhibits of much interest are promised. Headquarters for the Institute of Metals and the American Society for Steel Treating will be at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, and for the American Welding Society at the Bellevue-Stratford. The American Society for Steel Treating and the Welding Society will hold technical sessions each forenoon at their hotel headquarters. The Institute of Metals Division will hold sessions Tuesday morning and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons; that for Wednesday being a joint session with the American Society for Steel Treating. The latter society will hold independent afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday. Registration and information desks will be open at the hotels throughout the week, and an attractive program of entertainments has been arranged.

RECENT advances in the fields of chemistry, biology, and metallurgy have confronted the analytical chemist with an entirely new set of problems. Development of plastics and synthetics has brought about a need, not only for adequate methods for their analysis but also for the various raw materials entering into their manufacture. The remarkable advance made in biochemical and agricultural research resulting from the use of isotopes as tracers or "tagged atoms" has established the necessity for the development of methods for the concentration of natural isotopes and for a means for their analysis. Similarly the advent of new and complex alloys calls for accurate analytical methods. Fortunately the analytical chemist has been able to meet some of these new demands by adapting to his purposes an instrument which has long been the most exclusive toy of the physicists. Solubility and the chemical properties of the atoms, which have always served as the basis for chemical analysis, do not enter into this new technique. Instead, momentum, defined as mass times velocity, is utilized as the means for the separation of atoms or mass groups.

The use of Na-montmorillonite clay binders (Western Bentonite) in the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates is well established as is the idea that alternative binders must be found. 1-6 This note summarizes work done7 in evaluating a Wisconsin montmorillonite clay binder. The clay occurs in irregualr beds overlying the Prairie du Chien Dolomite and the St. Peters Sandstone near Hersey, St. Croix County.

DURING the closing month of 1929, Walter Douglas found his health impaired by the strain of many difficult years of alternating prosperity and depression, and in April 1930 resigned the presidency of Phelps Dodge. Douglas was succeeded by Louis S. Cates. The choice broke a tradition that had been held inviolate for almost a hundred years. For the first time in its long history, the direction of the company's policies and operations was entrusted to a stranger without previous Phelps Dodge background, training, experience, or tradition. But the choice was wisely made. For a time at least, the path of Phelps Dodge was to run through rough and dubious ground, and no man in the United States was better qualified to blaze that trail than Louis Cates. After graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cates had served a rough and financially un- profitable apprenticeship at one of the century-old mining camps of Chihuahua, Mexico. Following his return to the United States and a brief interlude as assistant to the president of the National Steel and Wire Company, he had resumed his mining career, first as timekeeper, then as

SAFETY in mining depends on wire rope to as great, if not greater, extent than in any other industry. Sudden failure of a shaft-hoist rope might easily result in death or serious injury to the operators and workmen, extensive damage to expensive equipment, and a loss in production while repairs are being made. A wire rope is only as good as its component parts. It must be made from wire properly drawn and treated. It must be fabricated on machines large enough and capable of imparting the necessary qualities to meet the stringent service conditions. However, unless the fundamental requirement of good ropemaking is recognized, all other operations, no matter how carefully performed, will not impart reliability and quality to the product. This fundamental requirement is steel that is homogeneous, of high resistance to fatigue, and of a type suitable for rope wire. Most wire-rope manufacturers agree that rope wire should be made from acid-open-hearth steel. It is comparatively easy to meet the same physical properties with basic steel, but such properties are only part of the requirements for good wire. It is absolutely necessary, particularly for rope service such as mining, where reliability is essential, that the wire be uniform throughout its entire length. Most manufacturers feel that this highly important requirement is better met by acid-open-hearth steel.

RECENT developments in the Turner Valley gas and oil field, 40 mi. southwest of Calgary, Alberta, have indicated a large producing crude-oil area. Drilling be¬gan in Turner Valley in 1913 but no major developments took place until the fall of 1924, when Royalite No. 4 well at a depth of 3740 ft. in the upper part of the Paleozoic (Mississippian) limestone obtained a production - of 20,000 M cu. ft. of gas with a content of about one imperial gallon of naphtha (73° A.P.I.) per M cu. ft. This well produced as much as 600 bbl. of naphtha per day, and until abandonment in 1934 produced 911,313 bbl., which together with the gas sold was valued at about $5,000.000.

PRICES of quartz sold in the United States in 1938 ranged from $1.15 to $36,000 a ton. This startling variation was due simply to the differences between glass sand and rock - crystal, materials that are virtually the same in composition. It illustrates the complexities in qualities, uses, and values of industrial minerals. It is generally stated that mineral deposits are exhaustible resources which can never be replaced when depleted. This statement is no longer true with respect to certain industrial minerals now recovered in increasing quantities from that most inexhaustible of all sources of supply, the ocean. Salt has long been obtained from sea water, particularly on the Pacific Coast, and reference was made a year ago to the large bromine recovery plant at Wilmington, N. C. Now the Westvaco Chlorine Products Corp. is operating a large plant at Newark, Calif., having a capacity sufficient to recover daily from the ocean raw materials that will produce 60 tons of various magnesium products. Lime is used to precipitate the magnesia from salt-water bittern. The products are chiefly magnesium carbonate for chemical uses, periclase and other refractories, and oxychloride cement for flooring.

Important economic planning by industries, companies, financial firms and governments is predicated on estimates of future growth potential. Prior to the passage of the Taconite Amendment by the people of the State in November 1964, various admittedly conservative forecasts were made of the future of Minnesota's iron ore industry. Since that date, 3 new taconite plants are under construction, 2 are being expanded, one has just gone "on stream," and a seventh is in the design stage. These plants have a total capacity of about 35 million tons of pellets annually. The pessimism of 1964 today is being replaced by unbounded optimism. In the light of such recent developments, it becomes essential to update forecasts related to production, employment and capital investments. New projections show 50 to 58 million tons of pellet production from Minnesota by 1975. This tonnage, together with some 6 to 8 million of natural ores, should provide an annual full-time employment of 15,000 by the mining companies, plus 700 in related railroad and power producing activities and 1000 in plant construction. Total capital investment in new plants should reach $1.5 billion by 1975 and $2 billion by 1990. These current estimates indicate that the conservative goals as set in 1964 for the year 1990 should actually be achieved by 1975 or 1980. BACKGROUND Various forecasts1,2,3 have been made of the future consumption and production of iron ores within the United States. The most recent of these is by Harrison,1 delivered at the American Mining Congress meeting in Las Vegas in October. His estimates reflect the latest iron ore developments on a world wide front as well as the accelerating trend toward pellets. Minnesota's Natural Resources council prepared a detailed report in 1964 outlining the various factors that affect the future of Minnesota's iron ore industry. CORPORAL SHEPPARD B. GORDY Sheppard B. Gordy, a brief biography of whom was printed inn the January Bulletin, entered the employ of the Braden Copper Co. immediately on his graduation from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1912. He remained with this company four years, working up through the various grades to assistant foreman and foreman to one of the individual mines. The last year he was in its employ, he acted as general mine foreman. He was for a short time with the Chile Exploration Co. and then went with the Andes Exploration Co. (Anaconda) and remained with CORPORAL SHEPPARD B. GORDY. the latter, doing mine exploration and development work, until he sailed for home in June, 1918, to give a more personal and active service to his country in her need. He declined a tender of induction into an officers' training camp, at the urgent request of Professor McClelland supplemented by Mr. Potter, because they demonstrated to his satisfaction that he could give more valuable service to his country in helping out with the aircraft production. Being within the draft age, in order to carry out this plan, it was necessary for him to be called by his Local Board and sent to camp. This call came Aug. 26. Two weeks before that time lie had gone to Dayton, Ohio; to begin the study of aircraft production, and was sent by the Dayton Board to Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio, where he died of pneumonia on Oct. 9.

In the Ti-Cd system two intermediate phases, TiCd and Ti Cd, have been found and characterized by X-ray diffraction powder techniques. An earlier reference' had reported the existence of the compound Tisd. No structural details, however, were given nor was there any indication of the possible existence of other binary compounds. Studies of the solubility of titanium in liquid cadmium2 led to the discovery of both TiCd and Tisd. The solid phase in equilibrium with saturated solutions of titanium in liquid cadmium at temperatures below 620°C is TiCd, whereas TizCd is the equilibrium solid phase above 620°C. Both thermal analysis and X-ray studies show that a peritectic reaction between the y phase (~isd) and cadmium to form the 6 phase (Ti Cd) occurs at 620°C. X-ray diffraction powder photographs of material isolated from the ingots used in the solubility measurements as well as material prepared by a direct heat of the appropriate stoichiometric amounts of titanium and cadmium can be indexed on the basis of a tetragonal unit cell with a = 2.904 ± 0.002A, co = 8.954 * 0.004A, c/a = 3.083. No variation of lattice parameters indicative of a range of composition is evident. With four atoms in the unit cell the calculated density of the intermetallic is 7.05 g per cm3; the observed value is 7.07 g per cm3. The TiCd lattice is primitive as indicated by the fact that there are no systematic absences among hkl reflections. The absence of all hko reflections for which h + k = 2n + 1 is also evident. This systematic absence indicates the following two space groups, C\h — P4/n and D&~4/nmm; both groups, however, have the same two- and four-fold positions. Stoichiometry, symmetry and space group indicate two likely structure types. They are the PbO-litharge3 (B10) type and the Ti CU (B11) type. Spatial considerations favor the B11 structure with atoms placed in the following positions: 2Ti (c) 0, 1/2, Z; l/2, 0, Z 2Cd(c) 0, 1/2, Z; 1/2, 0, Z The TiCd structure may be summarily described as a layered structure in which double cadmium layers alternate with double titanium layers along the c-axis. The best agreement between calculated and observed intensities is obtained for the values ZTi = 0.608 and ZCd = 0.130. Calculated and observed powder intensities as well as other pertinent powder data are recorded in Table I. THE ADVERSE CONDITIONS that have gripped industry during recent years have to some extent submerged technical developments under the more pressing demands of economic problems. Progressive operators, nevertheless, have given attention to improvements in processes and equipment even when sales were at a low ebb. The array of facts relating to technical advancement here presented, although doubtless incomplete, is sufficient to indicate that the spirit of inquiry and research has not been quenched by adversity. During the latter part of 1933 a new element has focused interest more fully on improved methods of quarrying, mining, and preparation of nonmetallic minerals. Codes established under the NRA have fixed minimum wages, reduced working hours, and tended to establish selling prices .on a basis of reasonable profit. Labor adjustments will in many instances increase the cost of production, and stabilization of selling prices will tend to emphasize quality and service rather than price as sales arguments. These new conditions point to a growing necessity for improving technique in the interest of reducing cost of production and improving the quality of products. Thus, technology is linked with economics more firmly than ever.

The following notes are contributed, not with the idea of offering a complete history of the development of this very important process as applied to the Leadville district, but with the hope that the practice, as it was carried out in the Bi-Metallic Smelter, may still be of interest to others. The Bi-Metallic Smelter, at Leadville, Colo., was the first to make a commercial success of the process described in the following pages, which consisted essentially of smelting raw silver- and copper-bearing sulphide ores in blast-furnaces to form a matte, which was generally re-smelted with siliceous ores for a second high-grade matte. Robert Sticht, in his excellent monograph on the subject,1 has outlined briefly the plant belonging to this company. He says, in effect: The Boulder, Mont., enterprise set the example for others with whom the patentee (w. L. Austin) had been negotiating, and the old La Plata lead-smelter at Leadville, Colo., was fashioned into a crude, temporary experimental plant for the Bi-Metallic Company, and the feasibility of the process demonstrated by a trial run. Subsequently, the plant was considerably improved, and, being supplied with very favorable ores, continued to run without interruption from August, 1892, to June, 1893. In September, 1893, smelting was resumed in a completely remodeled establishment, some $200,000 having been expended upon the new work. Thus, aside from the Montana experiments, which, under the direction of W. L. Many oil and gas producers find it advantageous to borrow against the value of their hydrocarbon re- serves. This paper considers the requirements for a reserve based loan and the calculations that a bank would perform to arrive at a loan amount. Three of the most common loan structures, i.e. a term loan, a production payment, and a revolving credit/term loan will be discussed. A typical outline for each type of loan is presented. Finally, a comparison of major considerations in the three financing techniques is shown.

Introduction. THIS study was undertaken on account of the lack of definite knowledge concerning the influence of bismuth on wire-bar copper, and the small elimination of bismuth from copper-matte during the smelting-operations. The early workers who studied the influence of bismuth on copper confined their investigations to malleability and ductility-two physical properties which are related to the others so intimately that their determination is of primary importance. Karsten ' and Levol,2 using bending- and mealleability-tests, seem to have been the first to take up the subject, and while their results are incomplete, they agree in the main with the later work of Hampe.3 The bending-tests used by the first investigators consisted in bending the specimen until it failed. The malleabilitytests were made by beating the material to a knife-edge with a hammer. Hampe not only determined the percentage of bismuth which would cause red-shortness and cold-shortness of the alloy, together with other influences of bismuth on the malleability and ductility of copper, but also took up the influence of the bismuth protoxide, BiO, on copper, and of bismuth sesquioxide, Bi2O3, on the copper protoxide, CuO. Hampe's conclusions of the influences of these two latter compounds of bismuth on copper are as follows "If the protoxide of bismuth be alloyed with metallic copper, it is not changed to metallic bismuth, but remains mechanically distributed throughout the copper.

Of all natural resources, iron ore made into steel is the most important both in tonnage and value. The primary reason for the prosperity of the United States in the last century has been its pre-eminence in domestic supplies of iron ore and steel. The depletion of these reserves by two world wars and by the demand for richer blast furnace charges, as well as the constantly growing world- wide demand for steel, has fostered the recent quest for new iron ore mines around the globe. These developments have made a dramatic change in the iron ore picture of the world. It is the purpose here, however, to look briefly at the development of the United States iron ore industry, which has played such an important role in the events leading to the modern day boom in iron ore exploration.
