Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. Working in gassy ground conditions is an everyday occurrence for the U.S. coal mining industry. As tunneling operators begin to venture into projects that expose them to the additional hazard of potentially explosive atmospheres, lessons learned by the mining industry over years of experience should be transferred into this industry. This paper will present practices developed by the U.S. coal mining industry for dealing with the problem of excavating material in potentially explosive atmospheres. Procedures will be discussed that can be used to detect and quantify gas prior to mining that have application to the construction industry. Degasification or drainage practices, including predrainage from vertical and horizontal boreholes, will be discussed. Also, ventilation practices commonly used in the mining industry will be presented.

During 1984, at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel conducted a mineral survey of the 28,600-acre South Pahroc Range Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-0132). The Wit derness Study Area is located in Lincoln County, NV, about 900 miles north of Las Vegas. Five mineral properties and two mineralized zones were examined during this study; of these, one mineralized zone, two small prospect pits, and part of two claims are within Wilderness Study Area boundaries. Perlite resources were identified in the study area; however, no significant metallic mineral values were noted at any of the sites. The Wilderness Study Area is dominated by a Tertiary volcanic sequence consisting of an interlayered series of tuffs containing thin beds of volcanic pebble gravel, sandstone, and perlite. At the base of the exposed volcanic section, perlite occurs along a 2.4-mile-long zone that parallel s the study area's northeastern boundary. The perlite is suitable for filtration, insulation, and soil conditioning purposes, Because of prohibitive operation and transportation costs, the estimated 6 million tons of perlite occurring inside the South Pahroc Range Wilderness Study Area are classified as an indicated subeconomic resource.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. "The Bongara area, northern Peru, contains Zn-Pb mineralization with characteristics typical of Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) systems. The northwest-southeast-trending late Triassic-Jurassic car¬bonate host rocks of the Pucará Group were locally replaced by early (D1) and late (D2) dolomite. Fluid inclusion microthermometric data from dolomite and sphalerite are typical of MVT ore fluids (78° to 187°C; ~15-23 wt.% CaCl2 equivalent), and do not show apparent covariation between temperature and salinity.Homogenization temperature data from D1 and D2 dolomite show a decrease from northern (mean Th = 138°C) to central (mean Th = 126°C) to southern areas (mean Th = 102°C), suggesting fluid flow from north to south. Assuming a geothermal gradient of ~30°C/km and an average surface temperature of ~20°C, the lower temperature limits might approximate the ambient host-rock temperatures, whereas the upper temperature limits may represent minimum temperatures of a deeper aquifer, probably at a maximum depth of ~6000 m. The lower temperature limits are also similar to the estimated temperatures if dolomitization and mineralization took place in the Late Cretaceous at ~2000-3000 m depth, probably during the formation of the Peruvian fold and thrust belt near the present day Peru-Ecuador border.Fluid inclusion data show that the fluids in each studied location had relatively uniform temperatures and salinities during dolomitization and mineralization. A significant salinity drop and a slight temperature decrease are observed during late calcite precipitation, suggesting mixing of brines with dilute, cooler fluids."

The Greater Vancouver Regional District completed installation of a 2.5 Km long, 2400 mm diameter concrete sewer in Delta, British Columbia in 2000. The sewer traverses through area of peat and soft ground. The ground investigation along the sewer alignment consisted of cone penetration tests and auger drilling with standard penetration tests. The gravity sewer is supported on precast, pretensioned spun concrete piles imported from Malaysia which had never been used for a major project in North America. The capacities of the installed piles were tested using pile driving analyzer (PDA) and three static load tests. A total of 46 PDA tests were carried out during pile installation. The paper describes the pile vetting process the owner went through prior to accepting the piles for use in the project and performance of the piles. It compares the pile capacity estimated from the PDA tests with that estimated from soil mechanics methods using data from cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests. The ranges of estimated capacities calculated by different methods are discussed from design capacity selection considerations.

A mineral survey of the Sill Hill RARE II area (No. 5304), covering 5,200 acres (2,100 ha) of the Cleveland National Forest, San Diego County, California, was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. This survey was in conformance with the Resource Planning Act (RPA) of 1974, as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976, to provide mineral resource information for study area classification. Bureau of Mines personnel made an economic appraisal of mineral deposits by searching pertinent geological and mining publications as well as U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Bureau of Mines files and records. Known mines, prospects, and mineralized localities were examined during 1981, and sampling and mapping were done where warranted. The Geological Survey 'did geologic mapping, geochemical sampling, and geophysical surveys to aid this study.

"Large quantities of slag are produced every year and dumped on slag heaps around the world, posing a potential environmental threat due to contained heavy metals content. Slags are waste minerals produced during furnace smelting of minerals. The contained values of base metals may be released into the environment under natural weathering conditions polluting ground and underground water. Copper losses into slag are a continuous problem in pyrometallurgical smelting operations. Due to shortage of ore concentrate, various mining operations have initiated the recovery of copper from dumped slag. The typical process uses crushing, milling and flotation. These operations create excessive liner wear rates during crushing and milling because the bond work index of copper slag is 22 kWh/t and this is considered a very hard slag. The process also has reduced flotation recoveries and requires high flotation reagent consumption. The present work shows that digestion of the milled copper slag slurry with concentrated sulphuric acid at a temperature of 250oC forms a solid cake and leaching of the solid cake with water is a possible option. However, the consumption of sulphuric acid can have a considerable cost on the recovery process. This can be limited by producing a leach residue containing gypsum and silicate materials as amorphous silica which are suitable for use as an additive for Portland cement. Laboratory results show that 90% copper recoveries can be achieved. The leaching is conducted to prevent silica gel formation and iron co-extraction. Leaching is optimum if silica gel-free solutions and good filterable residue are obtained. INTRODUCTION Slag is a waste by-product of smelting and converting operations in metallurgical plants. Both smelting and converting operations are aimed at iron separation from base metal sulphides in non-ferrous metallurgy. The iron sulphide component of the ore or concentrate is oxidized to iron oxide at higher temperatures in the molten form, and then fluxed with silica and other oxide rock minerals to produce fayalite (2FeO•SiO2) slag (Schlesinger et al., 2011). Slags are generally deposited on dumps and considered to be unreactive materials. Smelter copper slag contains significant concentrations of several potentially toxic elements, including arsenic, lead, cadmium, barium, zinc and copper. These elements can be released into the environment under natural weathering conditions and cause pollution of soils, surface waters and groundwater (David, 1998)."

A method for the analysis and prediction of single pile displacement behaviour is described. It is the displacement in time, under constant load, based on the use of hyperbolic functions to characterise individual constituents of the displacement-time behaviour. Extensive use of this technique has confirmed its validity in a variety of soils and that consolidation and creep settlement appear to be indistinguishable. The algorithms employed are suitable to model the displacement behaviour from the onset of load to infinite time for all types of piles and surface foundations. Until the advent of computer controlled static load testing, analysis of the displacement-time characteristic during pile load tests has been hindered by the quality of the data recorded and inconsistency of loading. This has hitherto made the development of suitable behavioural models very difficult. Understanding the soil deformation within a proper time framework allows the subject of pile instrumentation and testing to be developed. The equipment required is basically a computer controlled loading and pile head displacement measuring system which allows accurate analysis of the settlement characteristic in almost every situation.

The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. In a previous article1 the function of various fatty acids as collectors for iron ores was reported for the two alternate processes; (a) the flotation of iron-oxide minerals, and (b) the flotation of calcium-activated siliceous gangue. The selectivity of separation was shown to be markedly dependent not only on such common parameters as pH and the levels of collector and activator addition, but also on the structure and the degree of unsaturation of the acids used. The iron ores employed consisted primarily of hematite, goethite, and quartz and as the effectiveness of any one acid on the separation depends on the individual response of each constituent mineral toward the given collector, a comprehensive knowledge of the floatability of the individual minerals is desirable for the interpretation of the results obtained. The mechanism by which a collector ion becomes attached to a mineral-solution interface has been a subject of much investigation. From quantitative studies of the properties of the electrical double layer on mercury2 and on several solid surfaces3,4,5,6 , the adsorption of some flotation reagents at the mineral-solution interface is beginning to be understood. For example, it has been demonstrated from streaming potential measurements made on quartz5 and corundum6 that the interfacial electrical condition is strongly dependent on the pH. Thisoccurs presumably through the following electrolytic reaction at the interface, and in the presence of a flotation collector, controls the floatability of the solids. A concurrent investigation of the flotation behavior of goethite and of quartz carried out at the School of Mines and Metallurgy7 has shown a positive correlation with the electrokinetic behavior of these minerals. The purpose of the present investigation was to collect general information on the floatability of hematite, and to investigate the function of various 18-carbon aliphatic acids on the floatability of hematite, goethite, and of activated quartz. Electrophoretic mobility measurements, simplified flotation tests using a modified Hallimond tube, and contact angle and frothability measurements were employed. "Summary: Fibroblast proliferation and enhancement of collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. The current investigation presents a fibroblast proliferation assay to detect the release of competence factors from pneumocytes. The specific objective of this study was to define cell culture conditions for fibroblasts that would allow selective detection of competence factors in test media. The results indicate the following: (a) fibroblasts should be cultured for 2 days in plasma-free medium rather than 2% plasma to assure complete quiescence; (b) 1% plasma was optimum for producing progression activity for the bioassay of a competence factor, while 0.5% plasma did not produce sufficient progression activity (yielding false negatives) and 2% plasma often contained significant competence activity (yielding false positives); and (c) fresh plasma should be used since the progression activity of plasma was adversely affected by freezing and thawing. Under these conditions, this bioassay can be employed with either rat or human lung fibroblasts to detect competence factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), at levels as low as 25 ng/ml.Fibrotic lung disease, as a consequence of occupational exposure to silica dust. is characterized by the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung and the progressive loss of pulmonary diffusion capacity. Proliferation of pulmonary fibroblasts and enhanced synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis ( 1 ). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (2). Some cytokines stimulate fibroblast proliferation by activating specific phases of the cell cycle (3,4). In particular, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (G0 ) cells into the G1 phase of the cell cycle (5). Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P). on the other hand, regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from G 1 into the S phase (5,6). These two classes of cytokines have been termed competence and progression factors, respectively. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which quiescent fibroblasts are exposed to culture supematants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum (FCS), which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (7-9). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using platelet-poor .plasma [lacking competence factor(s)] as a substitute for FCS bas been described (I 0, 11 ). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors."

The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill.
