In the latest years, the use of innovative blasting techniques has become more frequent in mines all over the world. Such techniques allow the miner to be more aggressive in the distribution of explosive energy into the rock mass, e.g., stretching blasting patterns to improve fragmentation. Considering the different rock mass conditions and more energetic blasting designs, misfired shot events have occurred. After cause investigation, initiators have shown evidences of deformation by impact and/or loaded boreholes have resulted in emulsion desensitization, both presumably affected by dynamic pressure.

Mining in the Genesis open pit has been conducted above the active haulage and ventilation declines of the Deep Star underground mine. Production has continued in both mines. The Deep Star haulage and ventilation declines, the primary and secondary egresses respectively, had to remain open and safe for travel until the new haulage and ventilation accesses were completed. Eventually, the upper 350 feet in each decline will be removed. The declines are in relatively competent calc-silicate hornfels with several high-angle, northeast-striking, clay-filled or open-spaced fault zones that create localized areas of poor ground requiring steel sets. To maintain the integrity of the declines, blast-induced vibration levels and damage were monitored in both declines after each surface blast. Seven geophones were installed in the declines to monitor peak particle velocity and peak vibration frequency. These data helped design subsequent blasts and predict expected vibration and damage levels. Blast design modifications included reducing the pattern size, reducing the powder factor and limiting blasthole detonations per delay. While limiting blast-induced vibration, these blast design modifications had to allow effective surface mining to continue. Linear regression analysis of peak particle velocity and scaled distance was used to determine the scaled distance necessary to keep the peak particle velocity under 2 inches per second. To date, the new ventilation raise, which is also the secondary escapeway, has been established and safe conditions were maintained in the original ventilation decline. Data collection and conscientious blasting procedures continue above the haulage decline.

Image analysis has been proposed to be an accurate and convenient means of measurement of blast fragmentation. The paper compares the results of image analysis to screening using laboratory scale rock piles. The muckpiles ranged from uniform distribution samples to well graded samples following the Rosin-Rammler distribution.Deviations between screened and imaged distributions were observed in most cases due to the loss of fines. Addition of fines in the system improved the result derived by image analysis considerably. It is suggested that techniques for the prediction of fines be evaluated for modifying the size distributions produced by image analysis.

Before this study was started, literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast-induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet.

Blasting liability problems are frequently compounded by a company's inability to effectively communicate with concerned property owners and the lack of adequate complaint documentation. Often, by the time the insurance carrier becomes involved in a blasting claim, the situation has deteriorated to the point that a solution agreeable to both parties is virtually impossible to reach. The insurance carrier, wishing to minimize their lose potential may decide to pay on a somewhat questionable blasting claim rather than be drawn into lengthy civil proceedings that would ultimately end up in front of a jury with little chance for a successful outcome.

The ultimate aim of our overall task, of which the effort described in this paper is a part, is to be able to model the impulsive output of buried charges and the response of targets of interest. It is not practical or cost-effective to determine the response of all targets of interest to buried charges of all sizes by testing them. In order to have confidence in our models, however, they must be validated by a modest number of tests. A critical element in modeling the response of a target is the ability to model the loading function. The load a buried charge applies to a target above it when the charge detonates can be characterized in terms of the vertical impulse. The vertical impulse is a function of the size of the charge, its depth of burial, and the properties of the soil in which it is buried. The primary objective of the effort described in this paper is to determine the load a known charge places on a non-responding target so the data can be used to validate our models.

The traditional concept of scaled-distance modelling for predicting blast induced ground vibration holds many drawbacks, not least of which is the major effect data scatter imparts on confidence determination. An investigation by the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering, The University of Leeds, England has resulted in the development of simple but effective method of improving prediction capacity through the reduction of effective error by incorporating individual location response into a scaled-distance model. The work is the product of an l&month blast-monitoring campaign at a limestone quarry situated in North Yorkshire, England. The data, when presented in the form of a scaled-distance model, indicates a typical scenario where a good overall correlation becomes marred by the extent of data scatter. Examination of the individual monitoring locations however indicates that the response of the individual location is an important factor in the explanation of the large residuals. The novel approach thathas been developed incorporates a series of locational site factors which when incorporated into a scaled distance model reduces the effective error and therefore improves prediction capacity. The approach is based on using a standard computer package “spread sheet” on the understanding that these are commonly available on all quarry or home computers. This approach has been validated by comparison with a more rigorous statistics method.

The large diameter blastholes now being used in underground mining have caused concern because of their increased potential for damaging openings and creating rockfall hazards. In response to this situation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to reduce the amount of overbreak and damage to the perimeter of underground openings. This paper presents the results of tests with decoupled charges in 6.5 inch diameter blastholes, and unloaded guide holes, in Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) stope panels at the Homestake underground gold mine in Lead, SD.

Current research in comminution includes efforts to increase the efficiency of mineral processing systems and reduce the amount of electrical energy needed for size reduction. In most mining operations, comminution begins with blasting. Normally, blast design focuses on loosening material for excavation and sizing the product for efficient haulage. It is likely that blasting also results in internal damage to rock fragments within the blast pattern which may provide subsequent comminution benefits. If substantial comminution benefits exist, appropriate modification to blast pattern design may reduce the overall electrical energy needed for mineral liberation.

A number of studies have evaluated excavation methods for the construction of subsurface facilities for a potential deep geologic repository for the disposal of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, NV. Many of these studies suggest that where TBM (tunnel boring machine) methods are not applicable and alternative mechanical excavation methods can not efficiently excavate harder rock drill and blast methods may be the most efficient means of excavation. However, a number of concerns regarding drill and blast applications have been raised in these evaluations, most notably the affects of blasting on the surrounding perimeter, as isolation of the waste by the natural barrier of the surrounding rock is a key element in the concept of a deep geologic repository.

The 80 year old Theodore Roosevelt Dam built in a scenic canyon near Globe, Arizona is currently undergoing a major renovation. The old stone dam, built by hundreds of skilled stonemasons, is being covered with a new concrete face that will increase the dam height by 77 feet. The renovated dam will improve flood control and provide increased electrical power and recreation area. The contractor, J.A. Jones is constructing the new dam and powerhouse for the Bureau of Reclamation.

This paper is one sided because it presents the problem, but not the solution. The problem of blisters (bubbles) and occasional tears in caisson liners occurred when blasting and we have not found a conclusive cause nor a preventive solution. The Astec Bluerock Quarry is excavating an extremely difficult to blast rock type due to its highly variable jointing density that leads to excessive oversize. A drill and blast benchmarking exercise led to eight recommendations to minimise this problem. Quarry personnel instigated a continuous improvement blasting program, that has implemented six out of eight recommendations, resulting in a large reduction in the oversize and increased crusher throughputs for a marginal 7% increase in drill and blast costs. Unit costs have reduced by an estimated 10%.
