Drum hoists, where the ropes are attached to, and coil on drums. The simplest system has only one drum. Most such hoists, however, have two drums, attached to a common shaft. Ropes are wound on each drum in opposite directions, so that when one conveyance is being raised, the other is lowered. The conveynaces may travel in vertical or inclined shafts. In the latter case, the hoist s are referred to as slope hoists.2. Friction hoist s, where the headropes are not attached to the wheel, but are in contact with it for an angle of lap of, typically, between 180 and 195 degree s. INTRODUCTION TIE most important practical problem with which Physical Metallurgy is faced is the control of the mechanical properties of alloys. The most difficult aspect of this problem is the development of new alloys with the properties that are required for meeting exacting engineering requirements. A great measure of success has been achieved by following the empirical method and most, if not all, of the present variety of alloys have been developed by the process of experiment and observation or trial and error. It may, however, be that this method will become. less productive as time goes on, and that eventually it should be replaced by a process based on an understanding of the factors that determine the properties, so that alloys can be 'designed' to meet the requirements. This method of investigation will not be possible until a much better fundamental understanding of metals has been gained, and this will come only about as a result of a great deal of detailed research. The subject of Physical Metallurgy can be divided, as follows, into two parts: we may consider the factors which determine the structure, in the broadest sense, of an alloy. These include the composition and also the treatment to which the material has been subjected. The second aspect is the influence of the structure on the mechanical and other properties. In order to make an effective contribution in this field, it is necessary for an individual or a group to concentrate on a specific and very restricted topic. It is proposed to discuss in some detail the particular subject in which the writer and his colleagues are working.

Copper concentrates bearing arsenic as enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13) have disadvantage on copper smelting environmentally and economically, so those concentrates should be treated decently. In this paper, some experiments of arsenic removal from several kinds of copper concentrates by heat treatment in an inert atmosphere were discussed. In this study, several samples in which arsenic contents varied 0.18 to 8.3 wt % were heated to the temperature range of 400 °C to 700 °C under argon gas flow during 1 hour. The heat residues and volatilized materials (V.M.) were analyzed by XRD, XRF, ICP-AES, XAFS and MLA to analyze residual concentration of arsenic and residual mineral composition. Experimental results showed that arsenic removal from copper concentrates advanced in 2 steps; at the temperature range of 500 ° C to 550 °C and of 550 °C to 650 °C, respectively. MLA analysis showed that a few of arsenic in enargite was removed by 550 °C heating and a majority of it was still combined with copper and sulfur as tennantite. On the other hand, arsenic in tennantite was removed almost completely by 650 °C heating. Furthermore, a particular type of arsenic mineral, such as Cobaltite (CoAsS) still remained after heating at 700 °C.

Abstract - The metavolcanic rocks of the Dahongshan area have been subjected to both widespread hydrothermal alteration from circulating seawater and to regional metamorphism, such that their mineralogic and chemical compositions have been changed significantly. Studies of immobile elements show that these rocks were originally tholeiitic basalts with geochemical characteristics of T-type MORB formed in a mid-ocean ridge environment. The accompanying Cu-Fe-rich VMS mineralization is in keeping with the original petrology and tectonic setting of these metavolcanic rocks. Regional alteration evident in K-Mg enrichment is related to sericitization and chloritization. Local alteration associated with Cu-Fe mineralization appears to have been accompanied by Si enrichment and Na depletion. P enrichment identifies metasomatism related to Cu-Fe reconcentration in the mineralized zone.

"The Caledonian Belt is mainly underlain by Late Precambrian and possibly Early Palaeozoic rocks, which are in part overlain by younger strata. Most of these rocks are weakly deformed, except for those in some linear . zones, which have been intensely deformed by cataclasis. Mineral deposits related to two distinct metallization episodes have been recognized. The earliest are zinccopper- lead sulphide deposits, which have been concentrated in the axial regions of late-stage cross-folds within the main cataclastic zone. The host rocks are andesitic and dacitic tuffs which show effects of intense talcose alteration, silicification and chloritization. Deposits related to the second episode are mainly composed of copper sulphides with locally abundant tennantite and tetrahedrite, which occur in brecciated and fractured carbonate-quartz veins. These veins postdate the late-stage cross-folds. VLF-EM and high-sensitivity magnetics proved to be very effective in delineating the geology of these deposits."

High quality, mono-dispersed, hollow CeO2 microspheres with high surface area were produced by a spray pyrolysis method at 700oC. CeCl3 was used as the raw material of the process rather than Ce(NO3)3 because the latter is relatively difficult to obtain in industrial quantities. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy results confirm the high quality synthesis of hollow CeO2 microspheres with narrow size distribution, good mono-disperse, and good reproducibility. The process of the formation of mono-dispersive CeO2 microspheres was investigated by chemical dynamics and a possible mechanism is proposed. This simple method for synthesis of CeO2 microspheres is easily scaled up to fabricate other metal oxide nanostructured materials at industrial scale.

"Abstract -The common style of gold mineralization in the Basal Reef and other auriferous conglomerates of the Witwatersrand Supergroup comprises clusters of gold grains occurring interstitially to quartz and pyrite pebbles as well as gold accumulations attached to the surface of and infilling hairline cracks and fractures in round, compact, detrital pyrite. The latter textural association is generally interpreted as a result of remobilization of originally detrital gold during regional metamorphism and related hydrothermal fluid circulation. There is general agreement that, although gold solubility was Iow, ore modification occurred during the metahydrothermal event, but uncertainty exists about the magnitude and scale of gold remobilization .Micro-textural and chemical investigation of compact round pyrite and associated gold accumulation has established that gold is preferentially deposited on chemically heterogeneous pyrite surfaces. Combinations of alternating high- and low-As zones in pyrite result in mixed np-type conductivity accompanied by electron exchange and the reduction-driven deposition of gold at the cathode. This mode] does not explain gold accumulations which are not immediately linked to chemical heterogeneities and it is inferred that an additional control on the deposition of gold was exerted by physical defects which lead to zones of increased charge density and/or areas of focussed conductivity. The inferred precipitation mechanisms suggest that submicrocopic physical and chemical controls are the important factors that determined the sites of gold nucleation and that precipitation mechanisms based on physicochemical changes of the hydrothermal system were not involved. The Basal Reef contains on average close to 5% of round, detrital, chemically zoned pyrite which provides a large number of electrochemically active pyrite surfaces. The extremely effective electrochemical precipitation mechanism together with the low solubility of gold in Witwatersrand fluids is the main reason for the spatially restricted remobilization of gold in the conglomerate reefs."

"Several studies conducted recently have shown that molybdenite flotation from Cu-Mo ores is adversely impacted in sea water at pH >~ 10.0 irrespective of the pH modifier; under the same conditions Cu sulfide flotation is relatively unaffected. This has been attributed to the presence of Mg2+ ions and their hydrolysis products in the sea water which adsorb and precipitate on molybdenite surfaces as Mg(OH)2. However, why and how Mg(OH)2 impacts only molybdenite flotation in the complex flotation pulps containing a multitude of minerals is not understood. The work presented in this paper probes the interface and interphase regions near the edge and basal planes of natural molybdenite (MoS2) in aqueous solutions and flotation pulps, particularly in the presence of copper ore pulp and added Mg2+. Differences in interaction of metal ions and their hydrolysis products (Mg2+, Mg(OH)+) were measured on the two faces of this anisotropic mineral. How those differences relate to molybdenite floatability and the impact of aqueous solution chemistry are discussed.INTRODUCTIONWater resource management is an important sustainability challenge in mineral processing. In view of the shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world, mineral processing plants are evaluating alternative sources. Seawater flotation has received much attention recently and there have been several important studies reported in the literature, particularly for the processing of Cu-Mo ores (S. Castro, 2012; S. Castro, Rioseco & Laskowski, 2012; S. Castro et al., 2012; Laskowski & Castro, 2012; Ramos, Castro & Laskowski, 2013; S. Castro & Laskowski, 2013; Laskowski, Castro & Ramos, 2013; Nagaraj & Farinato, 2014; S. Castro, Uribe, & Laskowski, 2014; Veki, 2013). The main conclusions from these studies on Cu-Mo ores in seawater at elevated pH were: a) flotation recovery of Cu sulfides is either unaffected or only marginally reduced, b) molybdenite recovery is adversely affected in seawater at pH values necessary for rejecting pyrite (i.e. pH > 10 to 10.8 depending upon particular system), and c) the precipitation of Mg2+ in seawater as Mg(OH)2 is responsible for the adverse effect on Mo flotation. In order to further investigate the individual effects of Mg2+ and Ca2+ on molybdenite depression in Cu-Mo ore flotation, Nagaraj & Farinato (2014) conducted flotation tests wherein individual metal ions were spiked into tap water during grinding of Cu-Mo ores. They showed the strong adverse effect of Mg2+ addition on Mo recovery and, to a lesser extent, on Cu recovery when pH > 9.5. Under similar conditions, Ca2+ had virtually no effect on either Cu or Mo sulfide flotation. Figure 1 below shows the previous results for Cu- Mo ores in tap water and the effect of addition of Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. Note that in seawater the adverse effect of Mg2+ on Cu recovery was much smaller than that in tap water (Nagaraj & Farinato, 2014; Figure 4a and 4b and Table 4 therein)."

"Ground stresses are one of the significant factors in the context of rockbursts and underground instability at some hard rock mines in Canada. Overcoring strain relief measurements using triaxial strain cells were performed at several mine sites to provide stress data for stability evaluations and mine design. Pre-mining stress determinations carried out at depths between 60 m to 1890 m resulted in the following average stress gradients:Maximum horizontal stress, s Hmax = 8.18 + 0.0422 MPa/m depthMinimum horizontal stress, s Hmin = 3.64 + 0.0276 MPa/m depthAverage horizontal stress, s Ha = 5.91 + 0.0349 MPa/m depthVertical stress, a; = 0.0266 ± 0.008 MPa/m depthThe maximum and minimum horizontal compressive stresses, with an average ratio of J.75 ± 0.45, prevail in east-west and northerly directions, respectively. Horizontal compressive stresses in excess of vertical overburden load were determined, indicating large variations in ratios to a depth of about 1000 m with decreasing trend toward depth.From present data, a particular regional zoning for the magnitude and direction of horizontal stress fields cannot be outlined.A common feature at mines with near vertical orebodies is that the maximum horizontal stress acts perpendicular to strike while the minimum horizontal stress is aligned on-strike. The vertical stress components approach the gravitational overburden load."

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin. Abstract -The Ûrkút rhodochrosite deposit and Branisko Mn showings (rancieite, manganiferous calcite), located in Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks with black shale, were studied by organic­ geochemical methods. Both depositionallocalities were affected by the Lower Jurassic Toarcian anoxic event. Ûrkút shales are rich in organic matter (av. 2.94 wt% total organic carbon), the composition of which indicates derivation mainly from marine sources, with some terrigenous component. The shales matured in a bacterially active environment under reducing conditions of diagenesis-catagenesis. Branisko shales (?0.2 wt% TOC) with lenses of Mn oxide ore were weakly metamorphosed and their organic matter thermally degraded. The model for Mn carbonate ore formation envisages reaction of Mn derived from sediments, with carbonate generated by a bacterially mediated process of decom­ position of organic matter that also involved Mn reduction.

La performance des foreuses est discutée sous les deux aspects: l'aspect technique concernant Ie taux de pénetration et la quantité d'eau rejetee dans les galeries et l'aspect de fa santé et sécurité au travail, et plus particuliérement, les niveaux de bruit et de vibrations ainsi que Ie brouillard de l'huile. On conclut par l'évaluation du potentiel de forage à I'aide des foreuses hydrauliques dans Ie contexte canadien.AbstractIn the first part of this paper the technical and economical aspects of water-powered drilling are discussed. This technology, originally employed in South Africa, received some interest from Canadian mine operators. In this context a comparative experimental study of pneumatic and hydraulic (oil- and water-powered) jackleg drills has been realized. The performance of the drills is compared and the results reviewed with regards to technical aspects (penetration rate, amount of water spilled) as well as health and safety considerations (noise and vibration level, presence of oil mist). The potential for application of hydraulic jackleg drill is discussed."

"Alanx ceramic/metal composites are proprietary products developed by Lanxide Corporation who joined with Alcan to form Alanx Products L.P. in 1988. Alanx ceramic/metal composites are composed of silicon carbide in a combined alumina and metallic aluminum matrix. In laboratory slurry wear tests conducted by Alanx ceramic/metal composites have shown to perform well against other wear resistant materials. At the Kidd Creek Concentrator Alanx CG896 ceramic/metal composite was tested in two pumping applications, the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps. In both instances the wear rates of the parts made of Alanx CG896 were far less than the gum rubber parts traditionally used. As of year to date September 1992 the unit cost to repair primary cyclone pump parts has dropped 58% from 1991 figures. For the filter feed pumps the unit cost to maintain the pumps has dropped by 33% as compared to 1990 figures. The total savings represented by implementation of Alanx wear parts, based on projected year end unit costs for 1992, as compared to 1991 costs for primary cyclone feed pumps and 1990 figures for filter feed pumps, is $166,753. INTRODUCTIONAt the Kidd Creek Concentrator the cost to maintain the primary cyclone feed pumps and the filter feed pumps was a constant concern. Rubber wear part consumption was quite high and the manpower required was considerable. For 1991 the total cost to maintain five primary cyclone pumps was $244,062. The cost to maintain the filter feed pumps in 1990 was $72,076. A wear material was needed that would increase the time between repairs and that would increase the reliability of these pumps between scheduled shut downs."

Settling of copper, lead, and other metals in slags is an important part of overall recovery of metals, both in primary and secondary operations. The impact of slag reduction on settling is not well known. This is important since the cycle time for slag cleaning can be significantly changed with reduction of slag, through a decrease in slag viscosity and growth of metal/sulphide particles. KPM has worked with a number of primary and secondary recyclers to better understand how reduction of slag can improve overall operation. In this presentation, we describe the type of test work and analysis done and how this information can be used to guide improvements in metal recovery from slags. INTRODUCTION Typically, copper smelter slags contain about 1-2% copper, both in the form of copper and copper sulphide beads and dissolved copper oxide in the slag (converter slags are recycled to the smelter). With the average grade of world copper deposits close to 0.7%, it is practical to recovery copper from these slags. This is done routinely by one of two methods. The first method uses slow cooling in large ladles or beds to grow particles of copper sulphide. The slag is then crushed, milled, and floated for copper recovery. The slow cooling promotes precipitation and growing of the sulphide particles from the solution and then, the slag can then be milled to recover the copper through froth flotation. A consideration of this process includes the energy cost related to grinding, the use of water, capital cost for ladles, and the availability of tailing dumps. At the same time, the retreatment of the Cu concentrate produced in the mill will displace fresh concentrate, which ultimately results in a reduction of the throughput. The second method is the so-called “slag cleaning” and is based on the settling of copper and copper sulphides particles dispersed in the slag. This is achieved by decreasing its viscosity by increasing the slag temperature and reducing the iron spinel solid phases (magnetite) that increase the apparent viscosity of the slag. Typically, the reduction does not extend to the reduction of copper, and soluble copper (mainly as oxide) and fine matte particles remain at concentrations typically at or above 0.5% (Cardona et al., 2011; Cardona, 2011). This is an improvement on 20 years ago when slag was sent to dumps at 1% or less (Demetrio et al., 2000).

"The effect of nitrogen on the flotation separation of sulphides from complex ores from Brunswick Mining and Smelting (New Brunswick) and Mattabi Mines (Ontario) was investigated. The most significant finding was enhanced pyrite floatability after as little as 3 minutes nitrogen conditioning. This was used in a novel sphalerite/pyrite separation process developed on the Brunswick ore. After aeration and Cu/Pb bulk flotation in air using xanthate the slurry was nitrogen conditioned, xanthate added and the pyrite floated in nitrogen. As an example up to 70% pyrite recovery with about 20% sphalerite recovery was achieved. Sphalerite was recovered from the pyrite tailings and the pyrite concentrate by copper-activation, raising the pH to 10 and floating in air. About 65-70% recovery at 35-40% Zn grade was achieved compared to 25% Zn grade by the conventional route. The process offers a promising alternative to current practice which seeks to depress pyrite at all stages. A possible mechanism of the effect of nitrogen is presented. INTRODUCTIONUse of gases other than air in froth flotation has been reported from time to time. [Podobnik and Shirley, 1982; Lin and Metzer, 1975]. Of all the gases, nitrogen would appear to hold the greatest practical promise because of its easy availability and chemical inertness. It is used in froth flotation in chalcopyrite-molybdenite separation [Redfearn, 1983]. The use of nitrogen in polysulphide chalcopyrite. this case is mainly to reduce the oxidation of a compound (Nokes reagent) used as a depressant for There is no reported use of nitrogen in the flotation of other sulphide minerals."

An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

"The nature and distribution of the inorganic components and the concentration of certain environmentally sensitive elements, such as, As, Sb, B, Hr, Cd, CI, F, Mo, Pb, S, and Se, or elements detrimental to the utilization by industry such as B, Na, P and S are very important in determining coal quality. The concentration of elements in coal is controlled by the following factors: (1) frequency of occurrence of partings; (2) nature and habit of occurrence of minerals in coal; (3) environment of coal deposition; (4)rank; (5) geological setting; and (6) weathering.Selective mining of coal can reduce the input of undesirable elements such as As and S by eliminating the part of the seam which is enriched in these elements. IntroductionCoal is a sedimentary rock of plant origin and consists of two components: an inorganic component (minerals) which is formed by influx of clastic sediments into the coal-forming environment and also by activities of groundwater, and an organic component (macerals) which is formed from plant debris deposited in the original coal-forming environment. However, coal is a generic term with a broad range of utilization characteristics. A coal that is attractive for use in one market - such as generation of electricity (combustion) - may not necessarily be acceptable for use in another, such as for production of coke (Davis, 1978).The elements in coal are associated with both macerals and minerals. The elements associated with coal macerals, such as C, H and N are termed elements with organic affInities. The concentration of elements with organic affmities (including B, Br, CI, F, I, S, and Mg) often decrease with increasing ash content of coal (Nicholls, 1968; and Finkehnan,1982). FIgure 1 shows such a trend for chlorine. Some of these elements may also be incorporated in coal maceral as very fine mineral grains (Finkelman, 1982). The elements with organic affmities are often volatilized during combustion and carbonization of coal and emitted in the vapour phase. Emission of some of these elements (C, 0, Br, N and S) is of major environmental concern (Lim, 1979)."
