Asbestos is a commercial term applied to fibrous varieties of several minerals, the properties of which are not generally appreciated by the majority of geologists. A thorough knowledge of these properties and of the uses of asbestos is of fundamental importance in the assessment of the economic value of an occurrence of asbestos. The varieties of asbestos that are used predominantly by the manufact- urers of asbestos products are chrysotile, crocidolite and amosite but chrysotile constitutes 95% of the world's usage. It is the properties of high tensile strength, 'heat resistance and large surface area that make chrysotile asbestos the most acceptable of the mineral fibres. There are no known exploration aids, other than direct visual inspec- tion of outcrops in ultrabasic environments, that could be used in the exploration of chrysotile asbestos. The surface exploration of an occurrence of chrysotile asbestos is relatively routine, though it lends itself to a unique form of bulk sampling by the use of a twelve inch diameter diamond drill core. The laboratory assessment of the prop- erties of the actual fibre requires specialized techniques and tests to assess not only the amount of fibre present but also its length distri- bution, inherent strength, filterability, dust content and other prop- erties. The way a fibre reacts to milling will determine what milling process- es must be implemented to ensure a product that is acceptable to the asbestos product manufacturing industry.

The advances in computerised processors and digital microscopic imaging have enabled more studies that attempt to quantify textural information from rock images. However, a texture classification system designed for geometallurgy has always been challenging, as it combines general image analysis techniques and specific texture classifications in terms of the size, shape and orientation of mineral particles. In this paper, a novel texture analysis technique using grey level radial shell association (GLRSA) and spectral angle mapper (SAM) to discriminate between different geological images is outlined. The technique can be applied in routine analysis and characterisation of mineralogical and textural attributes which may correlate with variability in mineral processing behaviours. Using this texture analysis technique, a set of small texture reference images, a texturelet reference library, has been identified from a suite of drill core images. This paper provides an expanded definition of industrial minerals that challenges the way we look at exploration, development and the understanding of mineral industry structure and profitability. Included in industrial minerals are bulk commodities such as iron ore and coal alongside the more traditional industrial minerals such as salt, soda ash, silica sand and clay. The profitability of industrial minerals is reviewed from a producerÆs perspective and shown in many instances to be significantly higher than for precious and base metal industries. The key drivers of profitability are examined along with some highly profitable industrial mineral industries such as borate, potash, chromite and natural soda ash. Demand for industrial minerals in Australia and Asia is reviewed, with a focus on supply bottlenecks and the opportunity this represents for investment by Australian companies. The establishment of new price benchmarks is considered and the possibility of new export grades for industrial mineral products. Investment opportunities in industrial mineral projects are outlined, including some exploration concepts in Australia and Asia. Industrial mineral project evaluation methods are discussed and the challenge issued to companies (exploration, production and finance) to become a part of the profitable action in the world of industrial minerals.

A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northern New Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed : 1) subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2) subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; 3) crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Steps 2 and 3 may be partly contemporaneous. Such a model accounts for the thermobarometric and radiochronologic data, and also for the weakness of substratum deformation during the emplacement of the ophiolitic nappe.

Stope filling practice on the Great Boulder Mine was described in -a paper published in Aus.I.M.M., Proceedings No. 137, in 1945. When the paper was presented the process had emerged from the experimental stage, most of the initial operating difficulties had been overcome, and it had been established that this method of filling was suitable for the working of ore bodies in the Kalgoorlie field: Since 1945, it has fulfilled its early promise, -and during 1947, the tonnage of fill placed was sufficient to cover current operating requirements as called for by the mine ore breaking programme. The object of this paper is to outline current operations. In so doing it will refer' to some ground covered by the previous paper, but will omit details of the initial experimental work. It will include, however, a description of further experimental work on the use of hydraulic filling for worked-out shrinkage stopes, arid will provide more accurate data on costs than were available previously.ESTIMATE OF TONNAGE OF FILL REQUIRED.Early in 1946, the mine ore reserves were analysed in order to estimate the relative tonnages to be mined per four-weekly period by shrinkage stope methods -and by cut and fill stope methods respectively. This analysis was extended beyond the blocks already prepared for stoping, and inclqded the majority of the major ore blocks in the mine ore reserves. Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited has mining rights to four deposits of halloysite, which are located about 203 km north of Auckland, New Zealand. These primary deposits were formed by the hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite domes. Halloysite clay is currently being mined from two of these deposits and then processed for export markets. From humble beginnings in the mid 1950s, the Northland halloysite was processed initially for paper filler markets and then for higher value tableware and technical ceramic niche export markets. The paper will briefly cover the geology and processing of halloysite and then examine the history of New Zealand China Clays Limited, now Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited and then look to its future as part of global industrial minerals company, Imerys.

Detailed studies of the microstructures and compositions of zinc and lead blast furnace sinters have been undertaken. An analysis of the results obtained has indicated that in many cases the microstructures of these complex materials can be explained by the solidification of melts from pseudo-ternary phase systems. Further laboratory studies have been carried out to more accurately determine the extent of primary phase fields and the liquidus temperatures in the appropriate binary and ternary systems. This approach shows considerable promise in simplifying the descriptions of slag systems used in oxidising and reduction smelting processes for lead and zinc recovery.

A sequence of ultramafic units, very well exposed in Munro township in the Abitibi areal, of the Cahadian Shield, exhibit features which indicate that they are sub-aqueous extrusions. They occur within a sequence of tholeiitic pillow lavas, thin graphitic sediments. and large differentiated sills. The units range from a few metres to more than 250 m in length and less than 1 m to over 30 m in thickness. Over 60 individual units, occurring as flat pancakes on top of one another, make up a total exposed thickness of 150 m. The units have formed from a magma composed of a very olivine-rich picritic liquid carrying up,to 40 per cent olivine phenocrysts in suspension. Different units display a variety,of cross-sectional profiles. As an example of the most extreme type of profile, a typical unit 2 m thick consists of a cap of highly jointed fine-grained quenched rock, 10-30 cm thick, which becomes coarser downwards, grading into a zone composed of radiating and criss- crossing skeletal olivine crystals forming the well-known spinifex texture. This becomes even coarser-grained downwards, with "books" of parallel platey olivine crystals developing sub-perpendicular to the plane of the units. Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is owned and jointly managed by Ashanti Goldfields Company (Ghana) and Anglogold (South Africa). The mine is currently one of the largest gold producing open pit operations in Africa producing 620 000 ounces of gold and mining in excess of 70 000 000 tonnes of material per annum. The mine currently has 2000 full time employeeÆs and a mine life in excess of 12 years. Geita Gold Mine is comprised of 11 different gold deposits situated in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of North Western Tanzania (Figure 1). The gold deposits are primarily associated with banded ironstone formations within an Archaean greenstone belt. Current global resources, including Inferred, stand at 129.5 million tonnes grading 3.91 g/t (16.2 M oz). Open pit reserves total 70.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 g/t (9.4 M oz). The majority of the gold resource is hosted by the three deposits (Nyankanga, Lone Cone and Geita Hill) within the æGeita TrendÆ a large and continuous (>4 km long) mineralised zone (Adofo, 2002). Geita Gold Mine commenced operations in June 2000, as the second large-scale open pit gold mine in Tanzania. The new workforce of 800 people had no previous experience in open pit gold mining. Since the start of the operation, Geita Gold MineÆs management ambition was to become a world leader in the application of best practice in all technical disciplines and in operational success. Staff development and training was identified as one of the major components in the company achieving its aim. Geita Gold MineÆs management has committed the necessary training staff, resources and the commitment of over $US 1 M a year to staff training and development programs for 2003 and 2004. The process and management of Geita Gold MineÆs mining geology staff training and development program is presented in this paper.

Australasian mining companies expect a high standard of professionalism from their metals exploration teams. They also have, increasingly, a global perspective, employing explorationists of diverse cultural backgrounds and operating in diverse environments. Human resource development (HRD) of these professional explorationists needs to address all personal facets of functioning independently and interdependently in a modem working culture, as well as the needed technical competency. Creation of a learning organisation to promote this development is critical. Organisational consultants can support managers and supervisors as mentors facing the wide spectrum of development required by the explorationists; mentorship and guidance counselling can then complement training in the maturing of professionals from technical competence to professional independence and interdependence. Empowerment and clearly stated expectations are keys by which professionals can learn efficiently and effectively.

An assessment has been made of six reported methods for the determination of the swelling of iron ore pellets on reduction. The methods are discussed on the basis of apparatus requirements, reduction conditions, sample requirements, measurement of swelling and reproducibility. It is concluded that the CNRM, LKAB, and Lurgi methods are the most satisfactory which presently exist for determination of the swelling of industrially produced, iron ore pellets.

Haematite Recovery from a Tailings Stream Laboratory and pilot scale testing were carried out in 1999 on a tailing sample from a North American iron ore plant using gravity, magnetic and flotation techniques. The ore contained 16 per cent iron mainly in the fine (-38 ¦m) size fraction. Two methods of evaluating the separation efficiency were used; Selectivity Index and Z factor analysis. Tabling and magnetic separation produced poor results, with flotation testing showing some promise, generating concentrates assaying more than 40 per cent Fe. High grade concentrates containing more than 67 per cent Fe were generated using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, and it was recommended that this technique be pursued at a larger scale to verify the results obtained.

A novel solvent extraction process, called the SOHNEX process, has been developed at the University of Utah. In this process, the organic and the aqueous phases flow countercurrently in a horizontal vessel, and the emulsion between the two liquid phases is generated by high-velocity gas jets injected at the bottom. The gas jets are located at certain intervals along the bottom of the vessel with phase disengagement zones on either side of the plume zone created by the gas jet. The system is simple, having no mechanical moving parts or complex internal structures, and yet provides good contact between the phases with minimal backmixing. Tests have shown that emulsions with a wide range of specific interfacial area, including that typically encountered in mixer-settlers, can be generated in this process. It has significant built-in flexibility of operation including the control of the flowrate and hold-up of each liquid phase. The SOHNEX process overcomes the difficulties in the operation of conventional solvent extraction equipment such as mixer-settlers and column extractors. A major advantage of the SOHNEX process is that the energy of mixing can be closely controlled by adjusting the strength of the gas jet. This allows an optimal control of the drop-size distribution of the dispersed phase and thus the specific interfacial area. The process is continuous, and any number of extraction and separation stages may be built into a single vessel. The gas can be recirculated in a closed loop, thus eliminating solvent loss and mist problems, especially for high-temperature operations. The SOHNEX problem can handle solutions that contain suspended solids and that form third phases. The simplicity of the equipment and operation with low maintenance will mean much reduced capital and operating costs as well as low environmental risks and improved safety. The SOHNEX process has been tested for continuous copper extraction from a dilute solution. Calculations also showed that uranium and other radioactive elements can readily be extracted in a small unit of the SOHNEX extractor while satisfying the nuclear criticality condition.

The coal mass flow monitor was developed to measure the instantaneous mass flow rate of pulverised coal to the copper reverberatory furnace at Mount Isa. The instrument was calibrated with an isokinetic coal sampler which was installed immediately downstream from the coal mass flow monitor. Readings from the coal mass flow monitor were used to control the feedrate of coal to the furnace and this helped to stabilise the furnace operation.Coal samples obtained from the isokinetic coal sampler were also sized using a Leeds and Northrup Microtrac analyser. The coal size was critical to reverberatory furnace performance. These developments significantly improved the overall combustion control of the furnace and gains of ten percent were made in the furnace thermal efficiency. Testwork on an auxiliary arch coal burner is also reported.

The seventies was a decade of intensive hydrometallurgical activity, firstly for copper recovery, then uranium, and finally gold. In comminution, semi-autogenous grinding was applied to uranium and gold ores. In leaching there were extensive investigations into pressure and in-situ systems, and into ammonia and chloride leaching processes. Solvent extraction became a major unit operation for copper recovery. New reagents and equipment were introduced. There was a resurgence of ion exchange for uranium as low grade sources were tapped and continuous ion exchange systems developed. Carbon-in-pulp technology came to the fore for gold recovery with the development of desorption and electrowinning systems. Electrowinning was widely applied for copper in conjunction with solvent extraction. There was a continued move to greater mechanisation and higher current density. There were important developments in solid-liquid separation such as high capacity thickeners, belt filters and sand filters. Many of these trends will continue in the eighties. Interesting new developments can be expected.

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) is Australia's largest company with widespread commercial interests ranging from steel productin to minerals, oil and gas recovery. While these interests are worldwide, the Company operates or is partner in more than 30 Australian mining ventures. BHP Engineering (BHPE) is the in-house consultant to BHP but is also the largest consultancy in Australia available to general industry. Australian Groundwater Consultants Pty Limited (AGC) is a large, independent consultancy offering specialist services in all aspects of water resources, waste management and environmental engineering, both in Australia and overseas. AGC is particularly well regarded within the mining industry and has a considerable record of providing solutions for mine water related issues. By drawing on the extensive combined experience of AGC and BHP Engineering, this paper will summarize some of the unique ways in which water interacts with and impacts on mining operations in Australia, particularly in matters such as: Slope Stability Drainage and Dewatering Production Cost (Transport, Drilling, Blasting, etc) Water Supply Water Management Tailings and Waste Management Environmental Issues. The paper will also illustrate the cost benefit of providing major engineering works for reduction in total mining cost. It will be shown that, through advance planning and close interaction between outside experts (ie consultants) and on- site personnel, very significant operational cost savings can be made while at the same time achieving a safe and responsible mining environment.

This paper contends that optimisation of energy resources through active control and predictive simulation modelling is possible, and that such monitoring leads to large savings in the electricity costs of hot mines (where refrigeration has to be employed). In addition, active monitoring and control can positively affect the establishment of a safe, healthy and productive working environment. In the entire optimisation process certain guidelines were set to ensure that the requirements of the Mine Health and Safety Act were met (South Africa). Varying the quantity of air supplied underground by means of variable speed drive (VSD) fans is one of the crucial factors in the interactive approach towards the optimisation of ventilation, as is refrigeration and the pumping requirements associated with refrigeration. This article highlights the interaction between the amount of air supplied and the effect it has on refrigeration requirements underground. This article also considers the effect that this would have on contaminant control. Various tools are available for ventilation and cooling design for mining. A lot of these tools are based on the assumption of steady state conditions and do not take into account instantaneous changes in conditions, day-to-day, or hour-to-hour (such as for temperature and contaminants). They also do not take into account the optimisation of energy resources related to the creation of the acceptable underground conditions. With these tools worst-case and best-case scenarios are identified, and strategic decisions are made accordingly. Currently, the amount of the fresh air, the velocity of the air, and its general temperature in the mine are only changed when one production phase changes into another (or when unacceptable conditions occur as a result of poor design or neglect). This means that during a specific production phase (which can last for several months), there can be an oversupply, or undersupply, of energy resources, which will obviously affect the concentration levels of the various contaminants (through under or oversupply of air).

The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.
