"India’s economy is expanding with rapid urbanization. Improvement in infrastructure is a keystone to the Indian government’s economic plans, including expansion of transit systems. Most of these systems are designed with elevated and underground sections. New Delhi, a city of 23 million people, suffers from heavy traffic congestion and pollution. The transit (metro) system is seen to be of critical importance. Phase 3 of the Delhi transit system project is 140 kilometers (km), with 40 km of twin-bore tunnels requiring 35 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for construction. Transit systems are also under design or construction in Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Mumbai. Most have twin-bore tunnels. At present, 55 TBMs are operating on underground metro construction, and future projects will increase this number. This paper highlights the unique challenges of construction of underground metro systems in highly congested urban environments, using Kolkata and Delhi systems as examples. INTRODUCTION The first transit system in India was constructed in Kolkata (India’s third-largest city by population.) This line is 28 kilometers (km) in length, has underground and at-grade sections, was built in phases, runs north/south, and has 24 stations. This project was sanctioned in 1972, started construction in 1984, and was completed in 1995. The tunnels were constructed primarily by cut and cover methods with some open-face, compressed air shield tunneling. In 2006, the urban transport policy recommended construction of transit rail systems in all urban cities with a population exceeding 2 million. Further, in 2014 the central government stated that it would assist in financing transit systems in all cities with a population of over 1 million. In 2015, the central government approved the development of transit systems in 50 additional cities across India with a budget of $75 billion (see Figure 1). Transit development is just part of a huge expansion in planned rapid transport systems, which include metro, bus, high-speed rail, and monorail systems. Metro systems will include elevated and underground sections with twin-bore tunnels and underground stations. In the Delhi/National Capital Region (NCR), now the largest city in India by population, Delhi Metro Rail Corp (DMRC) was formed in 1995 as a joint venture company between the central government and Delhi state. DMRC operates the Delhi metro system. (see the case studies described later in this paper). DMRC has developed an external function to carry out studies and to offer consultancy to other cities planning transits. Since its inception, DMRC has produced Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for every metro and monorail project in India. In 2012, DMRC became a partner in the management consultancy for Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit System, its first project overseas. DMRC became a model organization for other cities to follow. These cities have included Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Nagpur. Other cities (e.g., Lucknow and Patna) are in the metro planning phase. Metro systems are under construction or partially operating in Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Jaipur."

The perennial subject of comminution is deserving of a fresh approach if one can be found. This is attempted here by directing attention primarily to principles rather than to theories. While theories attempt to explain how a certain process acts, principles delineate the laws which the action-must follow. Comminution may be defined as the progressive separation of particulate matter. At the present time this is accomplished commercially by applying energy in the form of compressive and, shearing forces. Such forces strain and distort the particles they contact. When-the applied stress locally exceeds the breaking strength at the weakest flaw in the particle, a crack tip forms. The surrounding strain energy flows to the crack tip, which rapidly extends through the particle as a break. The minute changes in shape and the resulting energy flow cause the failure of other highly stressed flaws, with the consequent formation of a progeny (1) of new smaller particles out of its destroyed progenitor. The applied mechanical energy is transformed into strain energy as the particle is distorted, and then into heat when it fails. Only a tiny fraction of the order of 1/1000 of the applied energy necessary for breakage appears as new surface energy in the product particles. Analysis of the energy resources available in the United States confirms that coal will be needed to satisfy the future energy needs. The trends in the market place, particularly economic and political, suggest that the bulk of the coal will be consumed for generation of electricity. The utilization of coal to produce electricity will require technical solutions to the variable characteristics of coal and ash, development of methods to improve coal quality, and public acceptance of the cost of compliance with environmental standards.

I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent com¬parative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging.

The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent or at least delay mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the forms of calcined bones at least 2 000 years ago, (1) and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilizers in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 million metric tons of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows. Marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits, requiring an apatite carbonate mineral separation.

Money... not many subjects are as personal or as emotional. Hessiod said it well in 700 B.C. "Money is life to us wretched mortals". Are you getting paid enough? Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

High pressure grinding has been introduced into many grinding applications. The high pressure grinding roll offers capacity increases of existing plants and savings in operating costs. Also metallurgical advantages could be achieved. The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned in Arizona in July 1995. This paper provides information about the operating experience gathered during the first months of operation. The current flowsheet will be described as well as further options for plant arrangements.

The central Florida phosphate industry is not a recent development. The first phosphate mining occurred in approximately 1888 (1). Many of the original mining companies were "wildcat" operations operated with rapid phosphate extraction as the sole purpose and no long-term commitment to development. Many of the early pioneers were ill-equipped to mine phosphate at either a practical or economical level; as a result many of these early companies "folded" after only a brief period of operation. However, as these early companies went out of business, several large companies developed, expanded their mining territories bought up the folding companies and by 1903 (little more than 10 years after the first mines were started), approximately 37 of the original 60 mines were control- led by three major companies (1). In the early period, mining reclamation was nonexistent. The mined out areas were left to revegetate and reclaim "naturally" over the period of many years. Reclamation practices were only started relatively recently and the various reclamation techniques developed and used in the past have continued to be employed with varying degrees of success through the present time. The reclamation techniques used in the past and currently include land and lakes restoration, sand tailing reclamation, slime ponds reclamation and overburden fill.

An orebody is a mining company's greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

An acid mine drainage sludge containing 0.26% nickel, 0.21 % cobalt and 4.5% manganese was leached in a one-liter reactor with sulfuric acid in the absence and presence of sodium sulfite. The effects of temperature (25°C and 52°C) and sodium sulfite concentration (up to 0.03 molar) on the leaching rate were particularly investigated. The leaching rates of nickel and cobalt with sulfuric acid have been determined to be controlled by diffusion through product layer. It has been found that effective leaching conditions to give more than 90% extraction of nickel, cobalt and manganese while keeping the iron extraction below 10% come with an elevated temperature and a low sodium sulfite concentration at pH 3; for example, 52°C and 0.01 molar sodium sulfite.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the Gays in which- the policies of the U.S. government, mining companies and third world countries affect each other with regard to the availability of minerals. The interaction involves U.S. policy towards the mining industry, the policies of the companies themselves, and the policies of third world countries towards the U.S. and multinational companies. It is assumed in this discussion that U.S. policy will continue to be to seek certain minerals from abroad rather than attempt to develop domestic sources for all its requirements. This would seem to make sense both from the standpoint of cost, and for preserving what domestic resources there are so as to maintain some degree of market leverage. In today's jargon, this means greater dependency on the "third world", which, for this discussion, includes virtually all the nations in Africa, South America and Asia. Concern for availability raises the important distinction between dependency and vulnerability, and as the Director of the Bureau of Mines has pointed out, the two are not the same. Dependency is not neccessarily a bad thing; it is vulnerability that counts (Norman, 1980)

This paper is intended to give the reader an update on the work being done at the Mackay School of Mines about the fate of cyanide on precious metals mill tailings waste. During the last two years several tailings impoundments have been sampled and analyzed for total and free cyanides. From our sampling program we are beginning to learn valuable information concerning the fate of cyanides in precious metals mill wastes. Included in this paper is a detailed description of our sampling and analytical techniques. Also, some of the data obtained from five sites are given.

As a result of recommendations made in the 1988 Report of the Mine Safety and Health Administration Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) initiated a program to develop and test a diesel particulate sampling device. The sampling device employed the principles of inertial impaction to separate respirable dust into two fractions; one fraction containing particulate material having an aerodynamic equivalent diameter equal to, or greater than, 1.0 micrometer, and the other fraction containing particulate material having an aerodynamic equivalent diameter less than 1.0 micrometer. The design criteria were based on data which showed that virtually all of the diesel particulate material and very little of the mine generated dust was less than 1.0 micrometer in size. The instrument was tested in underground dieselized coal mines and in the laboratory. Comparative measurements were obtained with the MSHA designed impactor sampler, a University of Minnesota (UM) designed impactor sampler and MSHA's standard respirable coal mine dust sampler. Simultaneous measurements were also obtained with five of the MSHA and five of the UM designed impactor samplers to investigate between sampler precision. The paper discusses the design differences between the MSHA and UM impactor samplers, the precision of replicate measurement obtained with both instruments and compares measurements obtained with the respective samplers of the sub- and supermicron fractions of the respirable material.

"Duluth & Iron Range Railroad. The Duluth & Iron Range Railroad was built from Two Harbors to the Vermilion range at Tower, a distance of 67.6 miles, in 1884, and extended to Ely, twenty-one miles east of Tower, in 1888. It was built into Duluth in 1886, and branches were extended from its main line to the Mesabi mines in 1892 and 1893. The original grades on this road are very steep, going north, and in the thirteen miles from Two Harbors to Highland there is a rise of 1,150 feet. A new line between these points has been built with an increase of three miles in distance and with maximum grades of 1 per cent. Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railway. The Duluth, Mis¬sabe & Northern Railway was constructed from Stony Brook to Mountain Iron, a distance of 48.62 miles, in 1892. The Biwabik branch from Iron Junction to Biwabik, a distance of 15.54 miles, was constructed in 1892. The Superior branch from Wolf to Hibbing, a distance of 16.06 miles, was co11structed in 1893. The Alborn branch from Coleraine Junction to Coleraine, a distance of 53 miles, was constructed in 1906. The total main line mileage is 242 miles, of which 82 miles from Duluth to Hibbing is double tracked"

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. This paper presents the preliminary test results obtained using a 0.38-kg/s (3,000-lb/hr) beta prototype MagMill. In processing Upper Freeport coal, the beta prototype recovered 82 % of the weight of the feed and 91 % of the heat content while reducing the potential emissions of sulfur by 61%. Pyritic sulfur in the MagMill product was reduced by 78% compared with that in the feed. For all runs, the mill product particle size was controlled to between 70% and 80% -741m (200 mesh). Recoveries of mercury, arsenic and selenium ranged from 35% to 45% of the amounts found in the feed. Power draw was reduced by 26%, and mill throughput was increased by 9% compared to the pulverizer operating with no magnetic separator attached.

The cost of equipment maintenance is the largest single expense at many mines and processing plants. It is not unusual for a maintenance and repair budget to be larger than 50% of the punt's total budget. Generally, in the mining industry, 400-60% of the work force in a plant reports to the maintenance department. Studies have shown that many plant maintenance workers are only 33 to 40% productive, working 2.6 to 3.7 hours of every 8-hour day. In recent years, many companies have begun to recognize that- productivity improvements and cost reductions can he achieved by upgrading maintenance methods. This paper discusses ten common causes of low maintenance productivity and how recent advancements in computing technology can be utilized to address these causes for low productivity.

The organic, inorganic, and radiological characteristics of airborne aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size in controlled atmosphere test chambers and operating uranium mines. Concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene in two mines ranged from 26 to 57 ng/m3 of air. The carbon chain length of adsorbed n-alkanes was correlated with particle size. Normal mining activities produced an ore dust aerosol with mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) greater than 2 µm. The elements Na, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, and U exhibited elemental ratios similar to bulk ore and had comparable MMAD's. The S, Zn, and Pb were higher in aerosols than bulk ore and were associated with smaller MMAD particulates. Radon daughter particle size distributions were influenced by the kinds of particulates

To date VMD have designed, built and supplied nine autoclaves to various mining companies in Canada, the US, and Papua New Guinea. Initially, completely fabricated and lead lined units were shipped. The logistics of Placer Dome's Porgera PNG Project necessitated fabricating and lead lining each autoclave in five sections for transportation to site, each piece weighing approximately 30.5 tonnes. Support equipment such as turning rolls, automatic and manual welding machines had to be set up on site to facilitate assembly of these units which was a challenge in planning. This on site erection programme was completed in three months.

Water movement and water chemistry were monitored in the unsaturated zone at two sites in fluvial tailings deposits along the Arkansas River near Leadville, Colorado. One of the sites was remediated by the incorporation of lime and biosolids into the soil. Preliminary results, based on data collected during the 11 months following remediation, indicate that differences between the two sites can largely be attributed to heterogeneity of the deposits. Remediation has increased the alkalinity in the upper soil zone, but as of yet, there is no indication that soils at depths greater than 30 cm have been affected.
