Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-term and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

Subsidence profiles above two adjacent panels in Illinois are compared with pro- files predicting subsidence behavior obtained using the (i) National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) method, (ii) the profile function method and (iii) the influence function method. The NCB method predicts the maximum subsidence values at the center of the troughs accurately, but, the overall shapes of these predicted profiles do not match the profiles from the measured data well. Consistent values for the angles of draw were measured but these angles were different in the transverse (average value 43 degrees) and in the longitudinal (average value 17.5 degrees) directions. Time dependent subsidence effects are shown to be small but measurable. These displacements continue at a linear rate for at least a 12 month period. A comparison of measured horizontal distances, interpreted as horizontal strain, and the NCB predictions for strain shows that the peak measured strains are greater by a factor f about four than the predicted strains. The relationship between surface curvature and strain is investigated. Problems associated with calculation of surface curvatures from vertical displacement data are highlighted and a recommendation is made for future studies to consider direct measurement of this parameter. Surface curvatures above a moving face are found to be about three times less than the curvatures at the stationary end of the panel. On the other hand, a hyperbolic tangent profile function is shown to serve as an accurate predictive tool for subsidence behavior in two adjacent longwall panels at Old Ben Number 24 mine in Illinois. This function predicts not only the vertical displacements but also the surface curvatures above both panels. Influence functions are shown to be more problematic, although potentially more flexible, in their application than the profile functions.

Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

"Surface settlement adjacent to sensitive structures is a challenging issue in the tunnel engineering. In this study, 3D simulation of TBM excavation has been performed with the FLAC3D code and then the results compared with real monitoring data. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for all parameters affecting the surface settlement, such as the tail void grouting pressure (Pt), the face pressure (Pf), the tunnel diameter (D), overburden (q), shield thickness (t) and the length of the shield (L). The results show that the face pressure, tail void grouting and tunnel diameter have a considerable effect on the maximum ground displacement.In this paper, the monitoring data from Mashhad Metro was used to verify the numerical simulation. Data monitoring for about 47 sections between A2 and D2 stations was selected and a multiple regression analysis was performed. Based on this analysis, an empirical relationship was obtained for the coefficient of regression relationship which confirmed the sensitivity analysis.INTRODUCTIONThe surface settlement due to tunnel excavation is a complex issue, since the surface displacement is a function of several parameters that they are related to the excavation method, soil characteristics and TBM elements. Prediction of deformation is a very important issue, especially in urban areas, since these displacements may be affected the superficial structures. In recent studies, one of the most popular empirical relationships that is used to predict the surface displacement has gussian curve that it was suggested by Peck [1, 2]. An analytical relationship was proposed by Chow that its base assume was isotropic of soil, that surface settlement can be estimated based on the tunnel geometry and the shear modulus(G) [3]. Besides these methods numerical approaches such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Finite Difference Method (FDM) have been used over the last twenty years, since numerical modeling has a high capability to simulation a complex soil conditions and irregular geometry [4]. In this study, all aspects of the EPB-TBM on Mashad Metro Line 2 were modeled and the most important influences on surface displacement in urban areas were determined [1, 3]."

Throughout the mining industry, pneumoconiosis is one of the most severe occupational health problems being faced. The goal of completely eliminating pneumoconiosis as an occupational health hazard was underscored by the Federal Government with its enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969). Under this law, permissible dust level standards will be placed at 2 mg/m3 in mine atmospheres by December 30, 1972. The mining industry is thus faced with the tremendous technical challenge of achieving this level. Two basic questions can be raised with regard to this legislation. First, does a maximum dust concentration of 2 mg/m3 prevent the occurrence of pneumoconiosis? Secondly, can this dust standard be achieved using presently available methods and equipment? A precise answer to the first question has not yet been developed by the medical profession. Studies are continuing on the origin, prevention, and therapy of pneumoconiosis, and permissible dust levels could become even lower as medical evidence accumulates. INTRODUCTION The gold production is from the state-owned gold mines, the local gold mines and the by-product of metal mines. Since 1975, the small gold mines have developed in rapid strides. Currently, there are about 3000 small gold mines in China. Most of them are operated by the local, and the production is about 50% of China's gold output. In the small gold mines, the normalized mining equipments are employed at most of mines, but some mines still use such backward tunnelling and mining tools as pick, shovel and hand hammer etc.. The mining techniques have developed from the primitive to the advanced, especially the methods of open stope, shrinkage and filling have been widely used. Such new mining techniques as bolting, vibrating draw, non-electric ignition and diamond drilling etc. are also introduced in the wall gold mines. In recent years, the development of small gold mines is very fast under the guidance of new mining policy which is ' rapid and great development of large-sized mines, helping small mines to develop, and quick mining for the existing mines; and encouraging the collective and the individual to operate a mine.' GEOLOGICAL FEATURES The gold veins are dominant, which are divided into two types, ie. the mesothermal deposit with altered rock in a crushed zone and the hypothermal deposit with quartz veins. The orebody distribution is not centralized, and the size of deposit and single minable orebody is small respectively. Most of deposit dip at 30° to 50°, characterized by expansion and shrinkage, ramification and compound, thinning out and reappearance, separation and composite at the parallel veins etc.. The ore grade is variable, and the factor of grade change is above 100%. The waste zones with lean or submarginal ore usually exist in deposits. As for the gold deposits with altered rock, the ore boundary is indistinct. Most of gold deposits, particularly the gold deposits with altered rock, are intruded by the late structural rock, thus the faults and joints are developed, and the rock and ore are crushed, especially the host rock of roof wall is very crushed. It ie obvious that the conditions of both formation of deposit and mining are considerably complicated. HISTORY With a long mining history and rich experiences, the local gold sectors are small, but they play an important role in China's gold mining industry. Dated from Xia and Shang Dynasty, the gold goods was made. In the Tang Dynasty, the development of gold mining industry was very fast. A Chinese poem , written by Liu Yuxi -- one of famous poets in the Tang Dynasty, says: As sun is shining over Dengzhou land, The fog on river slowly goes away, The panning girls together meet at bay, The beauty's jewels and stamps of king are gold from river sand. This poem shows the local gold mining was flourishing at that time. In 1888, the local gold mining sectors were all the rage at the moment, and the annual output of gold was as high as 21.5 tons. Since the founding of New China, the development of local gold mining was subjected to several back- sets, but certain advances are made on the whole, especially since 1970. Round about 1970,the simple, backward and indigenous mining was dominant in the small gold mines; for instance, the hand-hammer drilling, the hand-operated winch hoisting and the hand haulage etc.were main methods of gold mining . Up until the late 1970s,great changes took place in stoping, haulage and so on. Currently, some advanced technology and large-sized equipments are adopted in the local gold mines. An interactive mine ventilation simulation software program (WIPPVENT) was developed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The WIPP is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research and development project located near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The facility is designed to provide a permanent, safe underground disposal of U.S. defense generated transuranic waste in bedded salt. In addition to its regular functions, the underground ventilation system is engineered to prevent the uncontrolled spread of radioactive materials in the unlikely event of a release. To enhance the operability system, Westinghouse Electric Corporation has developed an interactive mine ventilation simulation software program (WIPPVENT). While WIPPVENT includes most of the functions of the commercially available simulation program VNETPC (copyright © 1991 Mine Ventilation Services, Inc.), the user interface has been completely rewritten as a Windows ® application and screen graphics have been added. WIPPVENT is designed to interact with the WIPP ventilation monitoring systems through the site wide Central Monitoring System.

A core from the La Camelia attapulgite mine in north Florida was studied in detail to determine the detailed vertical variability and the relations of the various parameters. The structural, textural, mineralogical and chemical data indicate there are two major depositional cycles represented within the minable interval. The sediments deposited during the two cycle differ in detail but in general are similar. The environments of deposition grade from shallow marine to lagoonal to tidal flat to marsh. The sedimentary structure (lamination, burrows, pebble conglomerate), mineralogy (attapulgite, montmorillonite, sepiolite, dolomite, calcite) chemistry (Al, Mg, Fe) are closely related to each other and their nature is determined by the depositional environments. Most of the clay minerals and carbonate minerals are authigenic and are therefore particularly sensitive to environmental differences. The variability and environmental features seen in this core are characteristic of the sediments in the general attapulgite mining area. A detailed understanding of the relationships discussed should be of value in prospecting, mining and processing.

Newmont Gold Company's Mill No. 4 is located along the Carlin trend, about 25 miles North of Carlin, Nevada. The plant consists of a primary grinding circuit using a 7.2 m (22 ft) diameter by 2.6 m (8 ft) long semi-autogenous mill along with a 2.3 m (7 ft) diameter cone crusher. Secondary grinding is performed in a 4.8 m (14.5 ft) diameter by 9.2 m (28 ft) long overflow ball mill in closed circuit with a set of 66 cm (26 in) diameter cyclones. The ground product is fed to a typical carbon-in-leach gold leach circuit. The grinding/crushing circuit operation and control scheme are the topics of this paper.

An industrial engineering and computer simulation study was conducted on reclamation operations to evaluate the possibility of integrating mining and reclamation operations, and to evaluate the factors which influence the production potential of scrapers. The study was done in a southern Illinois strip coal mine producing approximately 2.27 M metric tons (2.5 million short tons) of clean coal annually. The main outcomes of this study are (a) it is possible to reduce reclamation cost about 20-25 percent by integrating reclamation and mining operations, (b) haul distance has the most significant effect on scraper production, (c) push-pull is the best mode of operation for wheel scrapers for topsoil/subsoil removal, and (d) historical data obtained from the mine for one year show that average dozer productivity in rock grading is about 60 percent lower than the expected production; similar data for scraper is about 25 percent less.

A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino mine. The efficiency with which the various samples could be ground was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from different locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale non-homogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully.

The analysis of the phenomena involved in the determination of the compressive strength of iron-ore agglomerates leads to the identification of the important parameters. It is shown mathematically that the pellet rupture strength is proportional to the cross-sectional area. Fracture is initiated at the center of the pellets by the tensile stresses developed by the compressive loads normally to the compression axis. The variation in strength between individual pellets of identical composition and subjected to identical treatments is due to internal voids of varying sizes, that act as stress-concentration sites. Two novel testing procedures are proposed. The first consists of testing the pellets between two plates having three steel spheres each. This configuration simulates much better the environment actually encountered by the pellets. The second procedure consists of a thick-walled cylinder in which a piston penetrates; a large group of pellets is tested simultaneously, as the stress versus strain plot is being recorded. This latter test presents significant advantages over the conventional testing procedure; the main one is that one single test is sufficient to characterize the mechanical response of the pellets.

The trend to larger grinding mills, requiring total drive power in the range of 10,000 KW(13,400 HP) or so provides the incentive for developing new power transmitting techniques, since conventional girth gears are limited to about 3700 to 4500 KW per mesh (5000-6000 HP). For the immediate future, the synchronous motor, with its beneficial power factor, and the squirrel cage induction motor, with its high reliability record and low maintenance, still promise to be the best choice for prime mover(s). Due to the abovementioned single mesh power limitation of the gear train, however, two or more motors must be combined to attain the required drive power. This paper describes a scheme for coupling these motors to the mill using a straightforward, essentially mechanical means that is based on proven components and controls.

INTRODUCTION The passage of Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA/Superfund) as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and state laws, have placed added regulatory pressures on the mining industry. These laws which focus on the regulation of hazardous substances and wastes for the protection of the public health and welfare and the environment, present the potential for tremendous financial impacts and liabilities on existing mine operators and owners and/or potential mine operators/owners. This paper takes a brief look at these laws and presents an environmental audit procedure to identify environmental liabilities prior to mine land transactions. The environmental audit approach presented is an overview of the procedures that could be used to document, evaluate and inventory existing and/or potential environmental concerns. This audit procedure can be applied to developed or undeveloped properties and at active or inactive mining sites. REGULATORY OVERVIEW Mining environmental liabilities have been addressed in RCRA, Superfund, the Clean Air Act (CAA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA). Even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that mining wastes will be treated as solid wastes under RCRA and not as hazardous wastes, these wastes could still bring about a great deal of financial liability under Superfund. The catch is if the mine wastes generated contain hazardous substances such as the heavy metals arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, zinc and others as well as cyanide. Thus, it is not only important for a mine operator/owner or a potential mine operator/owner to know if the mine wastes generated are hazardous, but it is important to know if the wastes contain hazardous substances. Following is a brief overview of RCRA and Superfund and their potential implications. RCRA RCRA, which provides the basis for the regulation of solid and hazardous wastes, is applicable to active mining and milling sites. Within RCRA the definition of a hazardous waste is provided. This definition applies to owners and operators of mining and milling sites if the operator has stored, disposed or treated hazardous wastes on-site. If this is the case and if strict process control and waste management activities are not adhered to, environmental liabilities may be associated with the site. Superfund The 1980 Superfund law can be applicable to inactive mining sites or to inactive sections of an active facility. The provisions of Superfund call for the regulation of hazardous wastes and hazardous sub- stances disposal and release not only by the existing owner, but also for any previous owner. This concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of hazardous waste cleanup (Haller, 1987). Furthermore, liabilities under Superfund have also been applied back to past acts; thus, several mining properties, active or inactive prior to the 1980 Superfund law, are at risk of being placed on the EPA's National Priority List (NPL) for cleanup. Last years amendments to Superfund, known as the Superfund Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), provided some significant developments for the mining industry. The major requirement of the amendments as it pertains to owners or operators of mining sites is that the EPA must revise its present Hazard Ranking System (HRS). This is important be- cause in most cases the primary reason for several mining sites having been included on the NPL was due to the large volume of wastes generated. As is typical at most mining sites, large volumes of low toxicity wastes are generated and the current HRS model prejudices against this. It should be noted that this provision only applies to sites that are not already on the NPL or have not been proposed for inclusion on the list.

A significant amount of silca is recovered in the rougher stage of anionic flotation of Florida apatite. This recovery, in the past, has been attributed to both entrainment and cation activated flotation. This study shows that by using a transport factor, it is possible to determine the contribution of each mechanism towards silica recovery. Further, it is shown that the concentration of cations in the conditioning water significantly affects both the amount of silica recovered due to entrainment and true flotation. Further confirmation of this phenomenon was obtained by Ca++ doping of the conditioning water and by using a sodium silicate depressant.

Mining impacts to groundwater are being comprehensively regulated for the first time in Arizona with the implementation of the Aquifer Protection Permit Program. This far reaching program is one of the nation's strongest groundwater quality protection programs. Aquifer Protection Pennits (APPs) are required for almost all mining operations and will compel mining companies to pay increased attention to the potential groundwater quality impacts from their activities. All regulated mining operations will have to employ discharge control technologies and monitoring will be heavily emphasized. Technical requirements and relevant permit conditions are discussed.

Larger mines spend millions of dollars annually on rock drilling tools, but often purchase based on historic consumption. The results vary from excess inventory to acute tools shortages. These lead to emergency sourcing, sometimes mixing products that don’t perform optimally. Boart Longyear analyzed the usage pattern of 96 thousand drill bits at thirteen different underground mining contracts, showing very high variability. The monthly standard deviation on a product level was 42%, with the highest for development and low volume bits. A new rule of thumb is suggested to carry only one month of safety stock for high volume bits, but increase to three months for low volume bits. This balance will reduce the risk of outages with less inventory. The accuracy can be improved by considering the specific conditions at each mine and reclassifying individual bits for a different safety stock level. Root cause analysis and collaborative forecasting between mines and suppliers can lead to further optimization of availability and inventory levels.

In 1994 Western Mine Engineering, Inc., (WME), which is now InfoMine USA, Inc., set out to build a suite of stand-alone software programs that would provide their clients the means to estimate the costs of developing and operating mineral exploitation projects. After the first program (Sherpa for Surface Mines) was completed and launched, the developer (me) left WME to form Aventurine Engineering, Inc., in order to complete the series of applications. In the years since, four programs have either been developed or upgraded and enhanced. Applications were produced that estimate the costs of underground mining, placer mining, and project site reclamation. In addition, an application specifically designed to evaluate the economics of these projects, which was based upon a program previously developed for WME by Bill Willoughby of Willoughby & Associates, was redesigned and the code updated to a MicroSoft compatible platform. All these programs follow an engineering-based approach to cost estimating. Instead of relying on rules-of-thumb and statistical averages, they calculate all of the engineering and operational parameters needed to estimate costs. The premise is that the uncertainty associated with cost estimates should lie with the data available for the resource, not the approaches used to design and estimate the associated design parameters. In other words, it is acceptable that items such as the resource grades, deposit dimensions, ore and wall rock characteristics, and mill recovery rates carry with them some uncertainty, but parameters such as loader bucket capacities, truck speeds, pump horsepowers, hoist velocities, and grinding mill diameters can be calculated (although uncertain data might be used in those calculations). No additional uncertainties should be introduced because the cost-estimating procedure relied upon statistical manipulation or anecdotal inaccuracies. To that end, the programs rely upon calculation-based approaches to selecting and sizing machinery, assigning the required workforce, and determining the extent of the consumables needed to recover mineralized material at a rate defined by the client. And while calculation-based software is not unusual, more modern approaches work toward the development, accumulation, and manipulation of data. INITIAL CONDITIONS AND PROJECT GOALS In 2016 we had five separate programs completely disconnected from one another. Each was written in VisualBasic, a language that was falling from favor. In essence, the status in 2016 was a series of stand-alone programs (Figure 1) in which results from one needed to be manually entered as input into another.

"From November 2014 through September 2016, Westmoreland’s Coal Valley Mine utilized a Marion 7450 electric walking dragline to extract 1.2 million tonnes of a vertically-dipping, 52-meter wide, fault-thickened seam, beneath a conventionally-excavated pit bottom. Mine planning and operational hurdles encountered throughout a kilometer of mined strike length included mitigating highwall instability in both hanging and footwall slopes, water management, and end-of-life machine reliability and maintenance. The most substantial challenge has been the depressed global coal market. However, the successful application of this mining method significantly aided the overall cost of production at the site. The valuable experience gained from this project will be extended to future mining areas where this technique can be similarly applied. INTRODUCTION Coal Valley Mine is located approximately 220 kilometers southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Since commercial production began in 1978, more than 84 million clean tonnes of coal has been produced and sold domestically as well as exported overseas for power generation. While the existing processing plant has a nameplate capacity of 4 million tonnes per year, the site has operated at a 2 million tonne rate since 2015 due to depressed export markets. Westmoreland acquired the mine as part of its purchase of Sherritt Coal Operations in April 2014. The mine operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with an IUOE workforce of 261. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The geology of the Yellowhead Tower mining area differs significantly from previous mining areas at Coal Valley. The Mynheer coal seam discussed herein consists of steeply dipping, highly-sheared, thrust-faulted, and heterogeneous coal pods. Deep set, southwest striking thrust faults were the likely mechanism for the podding and have resulted in overturned, rolled and highly sheared seams with zone thicknesses of up to 65 meters.The hanging wall is characterized by soft bentonitic mudstones and siltstones, overlain by massive competent sandstone. The footwall is defined by a hard volcanic tuff, interbedded with thin, sporadic coal seams. The sandstone above and volcanic tuff below constrained the faulting system within this zone, enabling the mass podding that has afforded the opportunity for large-scale mining."
