Investigation of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems and evaluations by the mining industry determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding the revegetation of coal mined lands in the western arid and semi-arid regions (Sherman, et al. 1980). The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid-set irrigation. Irrigation should be supplemental by complimenting natural precipitation and should be implemented on a temporary basis. For germination, the vegetation requires application of small amounts of water in a gentle, frequent, and timely manner. For the establishment phase of growth, moisture should be applied and stored in the soil either through pre-irrigation or deep irrigation.

Recent studies towards dragline excavation efficiency have focused on incrementally achieving automation of the entire excavation cycle. Initial efforts resulted in the development of an automated dragline swing system, which optimizes the swing phase time. However, the system still requires human operation for collision avoidance. For full dragline autonomy, a machine vision system is needed for collision prevention and big rock handling during the ‘swinging’ and ‘digging’ phases of the excavation operation. Previous attempts in this area focused on collision avoidance vision models which estimated the location of the bucket in space in real-time. However, these previous models use image segmentation methods that are neither scalable nor multi-purpose. In this study, a scalable and multi-purpose vision model has been developed for draglines using Convolutional Neural Networks. This vision system averages 82.6% classification accuracy and 91% detection in collision avoidance. It also achieves an 87.32% detection rate in bucket pose estimation tasks. In addition, it averages 80.9% precision and 91.3% recall performance across terrain recognition and oversized rock detection tasks. With minimal modification, the proposed vision system can be adjusted for other automated excavators. INTRODUCTION Complete excavator automation is widely regarded as the next phase in efforts toward improving earthmoving efficiency. Earthmoving often involves complex, forceful interactions between an excavator and the ground. The nature of these interactions depends largely on the type, properties and physical characteristics of the earth material. This process is further complicated by the random occurrence of tree roots, boulders and other such obstructions. Therefore, the ability of a controller to detect changes in the operating conditions, adjust the digging strategy and respond in real-time is of utmost importance. Early studies into autonomous excavation identified some key performance criteria which included the following [1]: • The autonomous excavator must be able to work in any type of earth material. • Its excavation accuracy must be within 50mm. • It should be able to handle different surface and underground obstacles autonomously. • It should be able to operate at the speed of the average operator in any condition. • Its operation should be capable of safe integration with other site systems.

"Fiber reinforcement has emerged as an alternative to steel bars in precast concrete segments due to advantages such as saving cost and reducing production time while developing a more robust product with improved handling and long-term durability. ACI recently drafted a new report as the first design guideline on FRC tunnel segments to provide specific guidance for this emerging technology. ACI document offers general information on the history of FRC precast segments from tunneling projects throughout the world; a procedure for structural analysis and design based on governing load cases, and a description of the material parameters, tests and analyses required to complete the design. This paper summarizes the design considerations in this ACI guideline prepared by the authors of this paper as the main contributors. Application of this guideline to design of a tunnel with an internal diameter of 5.5 m (18 ft) results in elimination of steel bars.INTRODUCTIONPrecast concrete segments are installed to support the tunnel excavation behind the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in soft ground and weak rock applications. The TBM advances by thrusting off the completed rings of precast concrete segments that provide both the initial and final ground support as part of a one-pass lining system. These segments are typically designed to resist the permanent loads from the ground and groundwater as well as the temporary loads from production, transportation and construction. Tunnel segments are generally reinforced to resist the tensile stresses at both the Serviceability (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit States (ULS). With traditional rebar, a significant amount of labor is needed to assemble the cages and place the rebar, which results in higher production costs.Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) can be used to enhance the production, handling, and placement of precast concrete segments. This is because of the uniform dispersion of fibers throughout the segment to include the concrete cover, which is very advantageous for resisting the bursting and spalling stresses. These stresses develop as a result of the high loads induced on the segments during the TBM jacking process. The presence of fiber in the concrete matrix helps mitigate against unintentional impact loads during segment handling and tunnel construction operations."

There are compelling reasons for us to look to our Country's Western coal. Despite its inherent low BTU content, Western coal's low sulphur content provides a near-ideal answer to satisfy our in- dependent goals of clean air and self-sufficiency in energy. Vast reserves, thick seams and amenability to low-cost strip mining serve as a powerful economic basis for its viability as a primary and dependable source of energy for the coming decades. A major consideration, the solution of which may not be quite obvious, is transportation cost. These abundant deposits are remote from the utilities of the heavily populated eastern regions of the United States (Figure 1). A Western coal mine in Montana is likely 1500 miles or more from an eastern power plant. The comparable distance to an eastern coal mine may be only 200 miles. Thus, the question is: How can the haulage cost of our Western coal be substantially reduced to an acceptable level? If resolved, western reserves of coal will be one of the key solutions to satisfying our Nation's energy needs.

The global mining industry has been proactive over the last decade in finding ways to embrace the concept of sustainability. However, legacy mine sites (which include abandoned derelict and orphan mine sites) across the world continue to present issues for the global mining community, governments, local communities and NGOs. Unfortunately there has been much less academic focus on this area of mining and sustainability. This paper seeks to address how principles of sustainable development can be used to guide the development of processes for addressing post mining landuse issues for legacy mining areas. This is being done using a case study area located near Ipswich, in southeast Queensland, Australia. This area has a 160 year history of coal mining, and was one of Queensland?s crucial early industries. Mining in the area ceased in 2003 leaving a degraded landscape covering an area in excess of two thousand hectares adjacent to one of the fastest growing urban areas in Australia. A sustainability criteria and indicators framework for post-mining landuse on legacy mined land, developed from current best practice used for measuring sustainability across a range of industries is being developed. A review of current best practice suggests the framework should: (1) consider in equal measure environmental, social and economic factors; (2) have a minimum number of indicators which should be easy to identify and measure; (3) must have indicators with a meaningful output; and overall, the framework must consider particular requirements of the site being investigated. Application of the framework to the case study area is an ongoing aspect of this research, and the results will be evaluated through the use of expert stakeholders.

Oxide gold reserves are being rapidly depleted, especially in regions with long histories of gold mining, such as the Black Hills of South Dakota. However, these districts often have substantial additional deposits, where gold is refractory. It is not amenable to traditional cyanide extraction due to the presence of sulfide minerals that encapsulate or otherwise preclude the economic extraction of the gold. Several technologies have been developed to render refractory sulfide deposits amenable to traditional cyanide processing. These include roasting and pressure autoclaving. Unfortunately, these oxidation processes require substantial capital investment and incur significant operating costs. Microorganisms that obtain energy for their life processes by the oxidation of iron sulfides can be used to treat gold-bearing refractory sulfide minerals. As the bacteria convert the sulfide to sulfate, they expose any gold associated with the sulfide matrix. This makes the gold amenable to cyanide extraction.

A heavy mineral sand sample was tested containing 13% heavy mineral consisting of rutile, zircon, and ilmenite. Eleven tests were run at a mill site with a Mineral Deposit Limited MG 4 spiral to determine the effect of the addition 0; magnets to the spiral compared to conventional gravity separation. Different magnet configurations and field strengths were tested. Optimum results were obtained with the spiral retrofitted with magnets. The heavy mineral content of the concentrate was increased from 55.5% in the control to 64.2% with the magnets. The 8.7% improvement in heavy mineral recovery was due not only to the weakly-magnetic ilmenite, but also to increased recoveries if the non-magnetic zircon and rutile. The increased recoveries were achieved with no loss of concentrate grade.

This paper gives a review of promising technologies for phosphate processing, and covers flotation, analysis and process control, as well as tailings treatment and utilization. Air bubbles of less than a µm in size, combined with relatively large bubbles, have been demonstrated, both in the lab and on a pilot scale, to improve flotation dramatically, by reducing reagent use while improving product grade. Innovative use of polymers has allowed rapid dewatering of fine tailings with a final product that does not segregate. The first online laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer was created, allowing rapid analysis of wet samples using the laser technology. Many large commercial projects are successfully pursuing the utilization of phosphogypsum.

The depth at which it becomes more economical to use slope access as opposed to box-cut access for near-surface coal reserves, termed "transition depth," can be established for a given coal property by considering cost estimates for those parameters that determine respective access method. Fourteen parameters that influence access cost were identified and ranges determined. A Transition Depth Formula was developed to permit determination of the better method of accessing a reserve, given such information as highwall slope, road width, total bench width, pit dimensions, road grade, belt component costs, pumping costs, and cost of overburden removal and reclamation. In most cases, in Appalachia, studies indicate that the transition depth ranges between 20 and 30 m.

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are used in the flotation of iron values present in iron ore. Among the several fatty acids, oleic acid and its sodium salt are widely used. To substantiate the flotation results, the quantum chemical calculations of a few such acids have been carried out by adopting the semi-empirical AM1 method. These acids have been further optimized in the presence of an iron atom. The electronic interaction of the polar carboxylic head group of oleic acid with the iron atom is higher compared to the other acids. In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

Developing a strategic underground mine plan is challenging and investigating multiple scenarios may take weeks. This process can be sped up using the Theory of Constraints to isolate the bottleneck mining activity and simplify the mine schedule process. This paper presents a technique to apply the Theory of Constraints to test multiple cutoff grade scenarios in Mineable Shape Optimiser and quickly produce many high-level production-based schedules that can be easily interpreted using stope-by-stope graphs, the Hill of Value, and through incremental return analysis.

The goal of hot mix asphalt (HMA) design is optimal material blending to meet Superpave specifications. HMA cost minimization has being modeled as linear programing (LP) (Awuah-Offei et al 2011) and mixed integer LP problems (Brown et al, 2012) and solved with commercial software such as LINDO and CPLEX. Often these software, which are designed to solve general optimization problems, have licenses that cost thousands of dollars. The objective of this study is to develop a novel solution algorithm to the HMA optimization problem presented by Brown et al. (2012), which will negate the need for expensive commercial packages and is specific to this problem. This novel algorithm is based on the branch and bound algorithm for solving mixed integer problems. The algorithm is incorporated into a software package with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The developed algorithm is validated using a real-life HMA problem. Using this solution algorithm will save companies thousands of dollars, otherwise used to purchase software licenses.

The Boliden Aitik concentrator in Sweden processes 2,000 tph of low grade copper ore. The plant consists of five grinding lines feeding four bulk flotation banks with a scavenger concentrate regrind mill, and a column cleaner circuit with a regrind mill. The authors installed a model-based expert, optimizing control system to maximize copper recovery in the bulk flotation circuit while maintaining an appropriate copper grade in the cleaner feed. The optimizing control system uses on-line assays and calculates and implements set points for cell pulp levels, air rates and reagent addition rates. It combines the power of a dynamic population balance model which estimates mineral liberation in each stream, an optimizer which computes appropriate set points and a rule-based module which implements the strategy. The benefits have been evaluated over three months. The model-based expert, optimizing control system generates a measurable increase in copper recovery, around 0.5 per cent and an optimized bulk concentrate grade. The need to maintain the optimizing control system and other practical aspects are discussed.

This paper presents a comparison between the simulations of a semi-empirical model and a theoretical model for the prediction of radial stress in rock. The results of the simulations were compared to the results of a field test. The comparison of the radial stress predictions shows that in the semi-empirical model use of the plane wave approximation as the basis for the prediction of the radial stress provides a much better result than the theoretical model. The theoretical model includes the correct elastic wave geometry and theory but fails twice, firstly by considering the charge as a point (unit) energy source therefore; and secondly by using a Delta function with a very sharp rise and decay time to simulate, with no distinction between non-linear and linear zones, the attenuation of the energy per unit volume at the shock wave front as the wave moves away from the borehole. The results of the semi-empirical model were within the same order of magnitude as the results from the field test whereas only one result from the theoretical model came close to the result of the field test. However, even this closer result for the theoretical should be taken with caution as there was no measurement in the field test made at this distance from the borehole. Finally, because of its potential portability, convenience, and cost-effectiveness the theoretical model can be a most valuable tool for mining and civil construction operators in the early design of blasting rounds and of the mining operation itself.

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. The Mercer Clay bed in central Pennsylvania has produced feedstocks for the refractory industry in the USA and has also been investigated as a source of alumina and lithium. Developments in global markets for these commodities, as well as rare earth elements, have led to their classification as critical minerals in the USA, in turn renewing production opportunities for the Mercer Clay resource. The work reported here includes a review of the clay types and minerals involved, as well as past mineral processing and extractive metallurgy test work, and reports new research results from renewed investigation of the deposit as a polymetallic resource. This renewed work has found lithium contents that exceed 1,000 ppm, lying directly below the overlying Mercer coal, where the alumina content ranged from 32 to 34 wt%. Total rare earth concentrations were somewhat lower than have been found elsewhere in the region, and the highest contents were also found to be stratigraphically close to the coal. Further work is required to establish the mineral hosts for lithium and rare earths and to define the extent of enriched alumina, lithium, and rare earth concentrations.

The mining industry faces increasing geopolitical risk in the coming decades. Constraints such as resource nationalism, corruption and social license could grow to outweigh fundamental limitations like geology or supply and demand (Ernst & Young, 2013; Verrastro et al. 2010). Lurking beneath these more immediate and palpable concerns, however, may be more significant risks entrenched in geography and history. Deep-rooted cultural and strategic forces that emerge slowly ? or erupt suddenly and unexpectedly ? can generate momentous and far-reaching political, social and economic changes. While multinational enterprises routinely assess for political risk, the nature of minerals extraction means long-term and systemic geopolitical conditions are especially important for mining companies to identify and understand. Mine development is a decades-long process that binds companies to the land and makes changing course to avert emerging threats a difficult and costly option. Consequently, geopolitical assessment is a pertinent and valuable tool that mining companies can use to more comprehensively evaluate strategic threats and opportunities. Geopolitics is the study of society, politics and strategy through the lens of geography (Gray, 1996). Its emphasis on relatively permanent physical features of the earth makes geopolitics a uniquely valuable tool for assessing political risk. Topography, climate and natural resources have shaped, constrained and motivated peoples and governments throughout history. These influences transcend regimes, policies and borders ? and even states themselves ? which, by contrast, change often and dramatically. Framing politics against mountains, deserts and rivers supports identification of historical patterns and forecasts of emerging trends. In other words, the physical map provides an objective and consistent model for studying a subjective and dynamic subject such as politics (Sloan and Gray, 1999). Consequently, geopolitical assessment can highlight threats and opportunities that go unaddressed by other risk methodologies that emphasize current conditions (Glancy, 2012). Taken together, the permanence of geography, hindsight afforded by centuries of political history, and interconnectedness of world events makes geopolitical assessment a valuable approach for conceptualizing strategic risk.

Drill and blast project in Norway’s capital. The contract consists of 7 rock caverns (350–950 m2), 9.2 km tunnels, and four shafts. With 110 blue-collar and 31 white-collar, the project produces an average of 16–21,000 m3 hard rock per week, with a total of 19 tunnel faces. Weekly, nine grouting rounds for water control, 800 m3 shotcrete, and 1,200 bolts are required, and 60 trucks leave the site pr. day. Challenges include blasting in densely populated areas, planning and coordination to maintain high production, obtaining a CEEQUAL certification of very good, and transporting rock on Oslo’s main highway.
