[The beau of Mines made its first survey of motor gasolines sold throughout the United States in 1915, a second in 1917, and a third in April. 1919. These surveys shored that motor gasoline had become notably less volatile during each two-year interval. In order to ascertain whether this change was continuing, it was planned to institute semi-annual surveys, the first of which teas made in January, 1920. Contrary to expectations based on the previous surveys, the average volatility of the gasoline tested at this time was practically identical with that of the average volatility of the gasoline from the same districts in 1919. The next survey, made in July, 1920, showed a very marked decrease in volatility but as it has long been recognized that the volatility of motor gasoline manufactured for sale during the summer months is loss tan that of gasoline made and sold during the winter, part at least of the change was attributed to this factor. The average boiling point of the samples collected in the present survey is 263 degrees Fahrenheit, as compared with 264 a year ago. This shows that the average gasoline marketed at the present time is fully as volatile as that marketed a year ago. There has been, however, a noticeable change in the character of the product: the initial boiling point and 20 per cant point are lower than a year ago, whereas the 90 per cent and end-points are higher, which indicates a greater proportion of gasolines made by blending casing-head, or natural gas-gasoline, and naphtha.]

"The mathematical treatments used in the evaluation of particle size distribution from pipet-withdrawal centrifuge data are reviewed. An error in the published procedure for multiple-sample withdrawal systems is pointed out and a corrected formulation is presented. An alternative treatment, based on a piece-wise linearization of the size distribution is described. Computer simulations of the analytical and data evaluation procedures indicate that the errors in the original formulation are not generally serious and that the corrected and alternative procedures lead to very similar estimates. Except for some cases involving very narrow size distributions, the alternative approach appears to give slightly closer estimates of the size distribution. Comparisons based on actual experimental data are also described.1 IntroductionSedimentation methods are widely used for the determination of particle size distributions. The procedures are relatively simple to use and the results are essentially absolute, requiring no external calibration. The Eagle Silver mine is in the Rush Valley mining district, Tooele County, Utah, and is now operated by the Hampton Mining Co. The property, originally referred to as the Argent, is reported to have been one of the first discoveries in the district. The early operators mined ore to a depth of 850 feet, at which point the property was abandoned because of excessive water. During 1905 the Honerine tunnel was driven into the area approximately 1,800 feet below the collar of the Argent shaft. This tunnel served to drain the levels above and operations were resumed. Ore deposits in the Eagle Silver mine occur in the Galena King lime-stone, a 20-to 60-foot member of interbedded quartzite and limestone in the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian age. This member has been faulted along the bedding, forming the Galena King gouge. Mineralization commonly occurs in or near this gouge area in a brecciated, highly altered, pipelike zone. The known ore shoots occur in association with the breccia pipe, commonly adjacent to cross faulting and porphyry intrusions. In general, two ore shoots have been mined on the upper levels of the mine, one lying to the east and the other to the west of the breccia zone. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilling program was begun during the latter part of 1948 and completed early in 1949. Nine holes were drilled, aggregating 852.8 feet. Sludge and core samples from mineralized sections were analyzed in the Salt Lake City laboratories. A total of 87 sludge, 71 core, and 11 chip samples was submitted for analysis.

Titanium-enriched smelter slag produced commercially by Quebec Iron and Titanium Corp., Sorel, Quebec, was evaluated as feed material for a process developed by the Bureau of Mines to prepare rutile. Glass-forming agents including P205, B203, and two binary mixtures were added individually to the as-received and preoxidized smelter slag, and the nonferrous tramp oxides were effectively partitioned into the resulting noncrystalline phase. Iron in the ferrous oxidation state was moderately soluble in the glass of reduced specimens but less soluble under oxidizing conditions. The solubility of iron oxide in phosphate glass exceeded the solubility of iron oxide in borate glass. Effective conversion of titanium oxide to rutile was not achieved in the high-iron commercial smelter slag, and 20 to 30 pct of the titanium remained as pseudobrookite, a mixed iron-titanium oxide.

The influence of fuel additives on automobile exhaust emissions was studied using engines currently found in the U.S. vehicle population. The fuel additives used in the experiment were four multifunctional additives and one lead antiknock additive. Experimental work was done to determine both the direct effect of the additive per se on exhaust emissions and the influence of Long-term additive effects on emissions with mileage accumulation. Results showed no significant direct or intermediate effect on exhaust emissions for any additives tested. In subsequent experimental work concerned with the long-term or indirect effects of additives, the detergent-dispersant additives were found to have little influence on emissions when used in conjunction with high-quality oil and motor fuel. The lead (tetraethyl) antiknock additive increased exhaust hydrocarbons approximately 12 to 17 percent during a 4,000-mile accumulation period using a base fuel containing 2 ml of tetraethyl lead per gallon. An unleaded fuel was used during a similar accumulation period with no significant increase in exhaust hydrocarbons with mileage.

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are emerging as viable replacements for incandescent-based cap lamps used in mining. The photometric and energy characteristics of these light sources differ in important ways. The present paper describes the performance of LED and incandescent sources in cap lamps in terms of correlated color temperature, color rendering, light output, electric power, ambient temperature and airflow, and light source aging. Importantly, these characteristics can influence a miner?s ability to spot mining hazards thus impacting safety. Secondly, some of these characteristics interact with the operating life of the cap lamp?s battery power, such that differences between LED and incandescent sources can be magnified toward the end of a 10­hour battery discharge cycle. Empirically, we have determined that after 8 hours at an ambient temperature of 25 °C, the average light output of an incandescent cap lamp can decrease to about 69% of its initial value when powered by a lead-acid battery and it can decrease to about 65% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. An LED-based cap lamp using a constant current drive circuit can maintain about 96% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. Real-world tests addressing the effects of ambient temperature and airflow on the light output of an LED and incandescent cap lamp were conducted in the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). The LED cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance improvement of approximately 9.5% and the INC cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance degradation o f approximately 4%. The differences between LED and incandescent cap lamps were further quantified by the calculation of ?mesopic luminance? data that indicated for the same photopic luminance (i.e., as measured using a conventional light meter) the LED cap lamp could be up to 38 % more efficient than the incandescent cap lamp with a lead-acid battery at the end of the 10-hour driving cycle. Lastly, accelerated life tests were used to empirically determine light output depreciation as the incandescent light source age approached its useful life. There was about a 35% decrease in light output. This is quite considerable, especially given that the light output will decrease an additional 30% to 45% over the period of a 10-hour shift. The implications of the differences between LED and incandescent sources are discussed. This information is crucial in determining how visual performance could be affected for real-world conditions where batteries discharge during the work shift and as the light source ages. To date, only idealized conditions have been used for LED and incandescent cap lamp visual performance research.

Autoignition temperatures and limits of flammability of nine halogenated hydrocarbons in atmospheres of air, oxygen, and nitrogen tetroxide were measured in a modified standard autoignition apparatus and limit-of-flammability apparatus previously developed at the Bureau of Nines. Of the nine halogenated hydrocarbons investigates--bromochloromethane, bromotrifluoromethane, bromochlorodifluoromethane, 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane, 1-bromo-l-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, dibromodifluoromethane, l,2-dibromo-1,1,2,2-tetrafluoro-ethane, 1,1,1,3,3-pentachlorotrifluoropropane, and l-bromo-2,4-dichloro-1,1,2, 3,3,4-hexafluorobutane--two formed flammable mixtures with nitrogen tetroxide and six with oxygen; none formed flammable mixtures with air. Three of the halogenated hydrocarbons formed no flammable zones with any of the three oxidizing atmospheres. For those halogenated hydrocarbons that supported combustion in oxygen atmospheres, explosion pressures developed during constant-volume burning of mixtures near the middle of the flammable zone were observed to range from about 6 psig for dibromodifluoromethane to 158 psig for 1-bromo-1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane. In all cases, the calculated burning velocities of these mixtures were less than 8 in/sec.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has interpreted and applied certain provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act and Federal Mine Safety Codes, primarily for the guidance of Federal Coal Mine Inspectors. Although interpretations of the Act have appeared in the Federal Register, the Code interpretations and practical applications have not been published. In response to many requests from representatives of the coal-mining industry, the Bureau is publishing this information to promote better understanding of those provisions that may be misinterpreted or misapplied. INTERPRETATIONS AND APPLICATIONS Two Federal Mine Safety Codes are discussed in this report, namely the Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, Part 1, and the Federal Mine Safety Code, Anthracite Mines of the United States, Part 1. In this circular the word Codes refers to both directives; Code* refers to the code for bituminous-coal and lignite mines; Code? refers to the one for anthracite mines. Act* refers only to bituminous-coal and lignite mines.

Through a contract, the Bureau of Mines has funded the development of an Automated Breathing Metabolic Simulator (ABMS). The ABMS simulates man in all of the breathing and metabolic parameters for monitoring support and resuscitation equipment. For the first time, complete breathing and metabolic simulation are incorporated in the same device. Breathing rate, breathing depth, breath velocity contour, oxygen uptake, and carbon dioxide release are all variable over wide ranges, simulating conditions from sleep to hard work with respiratory exchange ratios covering the range of hypoventilation to hyperventilation. In addition, all of these parameters are remotely controlled to facilitate the use of the device in hostile test environments. The exhaled breath is also at body temperature and completely saturated. The simulation in faith¬ful to the extent of having a variable functional residual capacity and an anatomical dead space equivalent to that of humans. The ABMS will be used as a stand-in for humans in test and validation of respiratory equipment, permitting more extensive and safer evaluation in hazardous environments where human testing would have to be limited. In addition, it will greatly reduce the cost of prolonged testing in cases where simulation chambers with human subjects require three shifts of crews, including standby physicians. Perhaps most importantly, it will provide a calculated and reproducible test and validation facility. The ABMS is under complete computer control. Through a typewriter terminal the test sequence can be input into the computer which will then automatically adjust the ABMS to simulate any desired sequence of metabolic activities for time durations up to 15 hours. The computer also monitors the test procedures and provides test results printout.

"INTRODUCTION The determination of moisture in coal is an empirical test, because the time, temperature, and equipment are specified. The essential features of the equipment, and details of the procedure are given in A.S.T.M. Designation: D271-44 5/. According to the specifications, the following features should be incorporated in the equipment used:1. Oven must have uniform temperature in all parts.2. Oven must be constructed with minimum of air space.3. Oven must have means of changing the air two to four times per minute.4. Air must be dried over sulfuric acid (sp. gr. 1.84).The analytical procedures governing most of the nation's coal purchases are those given in A.S.T.M. Standards referred to above. These standards are general and of such scope as to cover all ranks and types of coal. In cases where only the moisture is required, a faster method than the standard procedure is desired.The semi-automatic moisture tester manufactured by the Brabender Corp. has proved itself in many industrial processes where the rapid estimation of moisture is of vital importance. With the approval of A. C. Fieldner, chairman, A.S.T.M. Committee D-5, and through the courtesy of Lowell Malan, chief chemist, United Electric Coal Companies, who loaned the tester, tests were made to determine the feasibility of using this instrument to determine the moisture in coal."

This report summarizes part of the work performed under the USBM Contract No H0155113, "Noise Abatement of Continuous Mining Machines." It describes the noise source diagnosis of a Jeffrey 120M conveyor and the evaluation of several treatments all conducted in a test facility aboveground. The conveyor noise at the operator's position was gradually reduced from 101.5 to 93 dBA using damping, vibration isolation, sound barriers and smoother discontinuities. The underground performance of the selected treatments will be addressed in Volume II of the report.

A method is described for controlling instability in finite-difference computations of liquid saturation near the borehole of a recovery well. Differences of pressure-and saturation-dependent variables are indexed offcenter, upstream and downstream alternately, to provide a stabilizing average. It was found that size of the time step could be increased by a factor of 4 without loss of numerical stability. Finite differences of the variables occur in a variety of relative numerical sizes and combinations. Those relationships of the differences that contribute to instability may be identified by the computing program in which they occur and modified to assist convergence of the computations and execution of the partial differential equations of liquid and gas flow.

The last published survey was that of January 1 , 1941 , released in April 1941 as Information Circular 7161 . The purpose of this publication is to provide comparable information with respect to crude - oil and cracking capacity on January 1 , 1947. No attempt is made at this time to bridge the gap in annual statistical series from the date of the last published survey to the present one . However , complete summary tables will be included in the succeeding survey for January 1 , 1948 .

However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of west Texas and the Texas Panhandle the production of ""sour"" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor-frequently a major problem—in the drilling and operation of any wells in those areas.The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is made of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen sulphide. From the standpoint of safety and health hazards, hydrogen sulphide in the petroleum industry has been discussed in a number of publications. 5 Likewise, the problem of hydrogen-sulphide corrosion of production equipment has been given considerable attention in the literature.6"

Water classification and heavy-media sink-float methods were investigated for concentrating metallic junk automobile shredder rejects initially upgraded to about 75-percent metal content in an air elutriation system. An 8-inch-diameter water elutriation column with a feed capacity of 2.7 tons per hour was constructed and operated. The results obtained were compared with those produced by sink-float methods. Tests made on duplicate samples of an intermediate-grade metal product were successful in upgrading the metal con-tent from 75 percent to 98.7 and 99.1 percent with respective recoveries of 95.5 and 98.9 percent for the water classification and sink-float procedures. Tentative flowsheets for treating junk auto shredder rejects are outlined.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the, "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams (2) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard" were consistent throughout their calibration. (3) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple.

During a recent investigation the authors were interested in determining: (1.) How many points were necessary to locate the deviation curve for copper-constantan thermocouples within an accuracy of about 0.05° C., used in connection with the "standard" thermocouple of L. H. Adams. (2.) Whether copper-constantan thermocouples showing considerable deviations from the "standard' were consistent throughout their calibration. (3.) How reliable the extrapolated portion is - that is, the interval between -183 and -220° C. of the "standard" thermocouple. It seems that a calibration between 0 and -193° C. can be made within the stated accuracy by determining experimentally the e.m.f. of the particular couple at -78.50°, the normal sublimation point of carbon dioxide, and at -182.97°, the normal boiling point of oxygen. The wolframite mineral series was studied to determine the effect of the FeO - MnO ratio on unit cell symmetry and thermal stability. This work was undertaken to evaluate the analytical procedures now in use for wolframite in scheelite and to aid in the development of improved methods of analysis. Wolframite grains were hand-picked, crushed, and screened; impurities were removed by selective magnetic separations using a Frantz isodynamic separator. The samples were further checked by optical spectroscopic and microscopic examination.

"INTRODUCTION During the Bureau's extensive program of investigating possible domestic sources of manganese, an are-dressing study was conducted in its laboratories at Salt Lake City, Utah, on a sample of oxide manganese ore representative of vein material from the Ophir Hill mine at Ophir, Tooele County, Utah. The sample (obtained by blasting down and mixing a portion of the vein) was submitted by the Ophir Development Co. of Ophir, Utah. As the ore was too law in grade to be acceptable for direct production of ferromanganese, it was tested to determine its amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; A1203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later, the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premium were paid for manganese content in excess of, 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."
