The increasing energy costs associated with mining has become an issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco is undertaking a Ventilation on Demand (VOD) Project in an effort to minimize costs, continue to mine at depth and reduce green house gas emissions. A dynamic VOD system is very complex with potential high risk. Therefore, a systematic approach is being taken for successful development and implementation of the concept. The physical components of the system are currently being tested at various Vale Inco mine sites. While the operability of the physical components are being tested, the strategy for optimizing the architectures of the system is being defined. This presentation discusses the method of developing a VOD system at Vale Inco.

Electrode control systems regulate power by physically positioning electrodes. Due to the weight and inertia of the electrodes and hoist equipment, this is a relatively slow process where power fluctuations of less than a few seconds are not fully corrected. Nickel laterite AC furnaces operating in high voltage, shielded arc mode typically incur frequent power variations of approximately +/- 20% or more around the power set point. To provide enhanced power control, Hatch has recently supplied, at commercial scale, a thyristor-switched reactance system called an SPLC. The SPLC incorporates predictive control software to operate furnaces at the maximum transformer rating by reducing the large power swings experienced without the SPLC. The resulting higher average power enables higher production, without increasing transformer or power plant capacity. A 60 MW production version of the SPLC has been commissioned on Falconbridge Dominicana's laterite nickel furnace, yielding excellent results with a 3 to 1 reduction in power fluctuations.

Diatomaceous or infusorial earth, also called diatomite; fossil meal, or kieselguhr, is derived from the lowest form of vegetable life, the unicellular alga:. It consists of the siliceous remains of extremely minute aquatic plants, which exist in both salt and fresh water. Light i~ a prerequisite to their development. These very small particles secrete silica in much the same way that molluscs secrete lime to form their shells. The diatoms at death sink to the bottom of the body of water in which they lived, and the organic matter gradually decays and is washed away, leaving the skeletons. Thousands of years are required by this means to develop bed5 of sufficient thickness to be of commercial value. The siliceous remains vary in size according to the species, but all are very minute and, as a general rule, they can be identified only under a high-power microscope. Over one thousand types have been distinguished and named. They are all composed of a hydrous or opalescent form of silica, with silica content ranging from seventy to ninety-five per cent. Magnified, they present an attractive sight, a very fragile structure with many interstitial openings known as cells. Many of them consist of two parts, defined as valves, held together by means of a girdle. Certain species, belonging to the Pinnularia family appear as a long comb, in half longitudinal section. The spaces between the teeth are the cells. This particular genus is very common in Nova Scotian deposits.

The principal sources of coal-dust underground are, of course, coal, and the working of coal. Coal-dust is most dangerous when it is in the finest state of division. This class of dust is found mostly on the roads, being blown or shaken off the loaded trams in transit, or carried in suspension by air currents. The air current passing from the working faces may also carry dust in suspension into the return airway, and the air current from the surface may carry dust from the shakerscreens into the intake airways. The mosl dangerous dust we have to contend with is, (a) that which is most finely divided, and (b) that which contains the most volatile matter, including the inflammable occluded gases, and also oxygen absorbed from the air. According to experiments, coal-dust in a fine and dry state would intensify an explosion, in air free from fire-damp carrying in excess of 3 ozs. of fine dust or 6 ozs. of coarse dust per cubic yard. The volatile matter in the dust must be between 12 and 31 per cent. in the ash-free coal, the latter percentage giving the highest flame velocity. It is vary difficult to propagate flame where coal-dust contains a large percentage of stone-dust, (say 50 per cent.). Shale-dust or other incombustible dust containing no volatile hydro-carbons or carbonaceous matter will prevent the extension of an explosion if mixed with coal-dust in proportion of say 70 per cent., and if the dust is finely divided and dry.

Conveyor belts installed in an underground mine can be a potential source of a major fire, thus the need for fife-retardant belting. A Canadian Standard, CAN/CSA-M422-M87, incorporating a small-scale flame test, a drum-friction test, a flame propagation test and an electrical surface-resistance test, has been developed to meet the varied needs of the mining industry. It is recommended that mines use Types A and B belting described in that Standard, because they will have passed the large-scale flame propagation test, rather than Type C, which does not require that test. Belting that has been approved by the U.S.A. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) may be much less fire-retardant than any Canadian approved belting.

Orano Mining Somaïr uranium treatment plant (Niger) uses a pugging-curing process to leach uranium. Sulfuric acid, nitrates and water are added to the finely grinded ore in a rotary drum to leach uranium bearing minerals and solubilize uranyl sulfate ions. Reagents, sulfuric acid and nitrates, are the main OpEx of this process step. The economical optimization of their addition requires a thorough knowledge of the ore behavior in solution with these reagents. Orano Mining technical direction and Somaïr laboratories developed a model to predict the curing process uranium recovery surface with a limited number of parameters. Experimental laboratory work to fit the model needs to be done for each type of ore which can require a lot of metallurgical tests and would be time consuming. In order to optimize the required number of tests, an innovative experience plan was designed in parallel to the development of this model reducing the required number of tests to only eight. Once the parameters of the models are correctly fit, the comparison between the estimated values and the actual values for the uranium recovery is excellent (less than 0.5% error in average). Associated with an updated cost model of the curing process, this new recovery model helps the plant operator find the best set of reagents to maximize curing process profitability in the Somaïr plant day after day.

"In the last decades heuristic approaches based on logic rules have been one favored tool to control flotation units and plants on top of distributed control systems. Fundamental knowledge on flotation processes, expressed in reliable models, and programs to assure the quality of the information, contained in available measurements, are still insufficient to develop robust predictive control strategies. In this paper the idea of using simplified models, when a known disturbance is coming into the process, is explored. As a first approach, the set points of the froth depth and air flow rate controllers are estimated based on this model. Since these target predictions are only approximate, a conventional feedback expert system, based on logic rules, continues the task of calculating the set points of the distributed controllers, in order to decrease the gap between actual and desirable metallurgical targets. This combined actions permitted a fast response of the process to change the operation of the circuit when a measured disturbance is detected. This control system was implemented and experimentally evaluated in a pilot rougher flotation circuit, with three pneumatic cells, with froth depth and air flow rate controllers in each cell. Since the circuit is operated for the air-water system, a phenomenological model, with parameters estimated from industrial data, is fed on-line with real operating variables and virtual values, characterizing the feed (grades, solids%, particle size distribution), in order to predict the metallurgical targets (recovery and concentrate grade). Several cases are discussed showing the benefits of this control system and the possible improvements to work on. INTRODUCTIONToday, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design."

PROGRESSIVE industrial organizations have recognized the importance of maintaining an adequate reference library of volumes covering all phases of their particular branch of industry, but it has been the experience of the writer that few engineers know how to use to the best advantage this store of extremely -valuable information which has been accumulated for their service. Nor does the average engineer appreciate the fact that it is only through the current technical literature that he can keep abreast of the rapidly developing fields of engineering. The present-day ramifications of the engineering field are of such wide scope that the human mind is not capable of storing away more than a small fraction of the information available on any particular topie; yet, from time ? to time, such information would prove invaluable. An engineer can know intimately only a small part of his own branch of engineering; but he cannot afford to neglect to take the fullest possible advantage of all that is already known in his own particular field. Technical information may be obtained by one or more of the following methods: (1) by enquiring of the individual who knows; (2) by performing the experimental investigations necessary to ascertain the facts; (3) by consulting the technical literature, where a record may be found of the work of others. This last method is the one we wish to examine. Our main consideration is the question of how to use the library, but first it is necessary to give some attention to the kind of enquiries one takes to the library, and to the nature of the sources of information available.

Introduction The mine at Copper Mountain of the Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company was one of the pioneers in the use of blast-hole diamond drilling for ore breakage. This method of mining has now been brought to a high degree of perfection. The system in use has?been described in a previously published paper which has become an important part of the literature o the blast-hole drilling method. At the time of the establishment of the system at Copper Mountain, standardized loading and drilling procedures were set up. These procedures were based partly on the results of experiment and partly upon the judgment of men experienced in breaking rock in the mine. The success of the method has been proof of their adequacy. With the progress of scoping in the mine, the diamond drill method of breaking was applied to other ore blocks where different conditions obtained. It was found necessary to make adjustments in the standard procedures to get the best results under the new conditions. The following paper attempts to express, in terms of mathematics, the relations of the variable factors. Until recently, estimations of drilling required were based upon the tonnage to be broken and the proposed rate of explosive loading. A revised method of estimating is outlined below which is direct and which involves no unrelated variable factors.

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. "This paper deals with the quantitative analysis of mine maintenance records. Based on a case study of dozer engine records, the author suggests an easy method of deriving useful information for managerial decisions in a step-by-step manner.More specifically, the paper deals with the following topics:• determination of the most economical replacement time,• determination of reliability characteristics,• determination of the number of replacements, and• determination of the number of spares.IntroductionThe mining industry collects a lot of information about every aspect of its activities, an example of which appears in Table I. In Table I , the distribution describes the operating hours at failure of 56 different dozer engines used in severe applications. Besides calculating an average and possibly a standard derivation from the data, little else is derived, at least from a statistical point-of-view.More information can be obtained from these records that could help management in the decision-making process.To illustrate this point, the sample data appearing in Table I will be analyzed in detail by making use of well-known concepts in reliability engineering.Distribution of DataTable I represents a distribution obtained from the recorded hours cumulated from the operators' time cards. The operating hours have been divided into fourteen classes for each 1000 hours of engine running, e.g . all engines scoring an operating time of between 1001 and 2000 hours formed a class , those scoring between 2001 and 3000 hours another one, etc. Generally, the class interval should be a multiple of the equipment preventive maintenance check period.The minimum acceptable sample size should be large enough to ensure that the score in each class interval is at least one. This paper deals with drilling and blasting techniques at the Phoenix mine, near Grand F1nks, B.C., which is now operated by The Granby Mining Company Ltd. The difficulties of open-pit mining through former underground workings are unique to this operation. Rock types are related to drilling conditions, and the methods used, or contemplated, to overcome the several difficulties are outlined. The equipment used is also mentioned. Finally, blasting techniques and costs are reviewed. Introduction T HE Granby Mining Company operates on open-pit copper mine and concentrator at the site of the original Phoenix mine, near Grand Forks in south-central British Columbia. The pit is a side-hill cut measuring approximately 1,000 by 2,000 ft., and covering a vertical range of from 4,550 to 4,950 feet above sea level. The mill is currently operating at 1,900 tons per day. A 4.5 to 1.0 waste to ore ratio necessitates the removal of some 15,000 tons of ore and waste per working day. Magnetic methods have been used for more than three hundred years in prospecting for magnetic ores. More recently magnetic methods have been used for finding salt domes and studying certain geological formations. A number of instruments have been developed and substantial improvements made as to their sensitiveness and accuracy. Papers and articles written on magnetic methods are generally elaborate and technical, and the average prospector finds it difficult to obtain the necessary information as to how to operate the simple magnetic instruments to the best advantage. The miner's compass, dip needle, and inclinator are, indeed, very useful instruments and are easy to handle, and a great deal of valuable information can be gained if the instrument is properly operated and the results correctly interpreted. The lack of knowledge of the fundamental principles, however, has caused a great deal of disappointment. Other and more elaborate geophysical methods have recently come into the limelight, and the prospectors seem to have lost a great deal of interest in the dip needle. This is much to be regretted, because magnetic methods have a particular field of use. The present article is an attempt to help the prospector regain interest in the magnetic instruments and to show the use and application of a simple magnetic survey. If the prospector expects some useful help in his work, he must, of course, know the instrument, know how to take the readings, and know how to plot and interpret the observations.

Quality is much more than providing a product that functions properly. True quality is a way of thinking, a way of doing business, and, ultimately, a way of satisfying a customer?s long-term needs. A true commitment to quality requires a top-down management commitment, with a willingness to change what needs to be changed and to expand upon ?best practices? that are already done well. Is there a cost to creating and maintaining a quality program? Of course there is, but the cost of not having a focused program is much greater. We have come to regard quality as an investment that pays dividends to both the supplier and customer. The lack of quality costs everyone and the customer pays the ultimate penalty. With modern, highly engineered surface mining equipment the end user calculates cost in terms of lost production (revenue), not simply the cost of the part. Bucyrus International, Inc. is a company that has listened to its customers and has dedicated itself to implementing an advanced quality program. The ultimate goal being the creation of a high quality product with extended reliability for the customer. The result is reflected in Bucyrus? current product offerings and highlighted by the new 495HF electric rope shovels at Albian Sands mine.

With the attainment of high temperatures it becomes possible to process any kind of material (particularly ceramics) in their liquid state. In the plasma spraying process, the material to be sprayed is rapidly heated until it is molten and is propelled by high velocity gases onto a surface where it adheres, to give protective coatings for a wide range of applications. The method could be considered as one of the most versatile and rapid to build up thick deposits (of plastics, metals, ceramics, cermets) and also free-standing artifacts for particular requirements without resorting to lengthy forming and sintering studies. Although plasma spraying is at the production stage in industry, advanced processes have also been developed for economically producing a wide range of new materials. This paper illustrates the benefits of the process and evaluates the challenges it represents.

"A computer-assisted process control system for the Noranda Process Reactor Wa5 installed at the Home smelter in 1991. Operating as an advisory tool for the furnace operators, and using a flexible oxygen balance as the basic building block of the computer program, the new control system has helped to reduce the variability in the grade of the matte produced by 50% . The smelter is currently operating at a 72% copper matte, with a standard deviation of between 1.0 and 1.3, while treating a wide range of concentrates, secondary materials and scrap. Enhanced process control has allowed for longer reactor campaigns, and improved stability of the converting operation.This paper reviews the feed classification and blending practice used at the smelter, outlines the strategy of the new computer control system, and summarizes the benefits realized since the implementation of the system in early 1990.IntroductionUntil 1989 the Noranda Home smelter operated as a multi furnace smelter, at one time having three hot-charge reverberatory furnaces, and finally operating with one wet-charge reverberatory furnace and one Noranda Process Reactor. In 1989 the final reverberatory furnace was closed and the Reactor became the sole smelting vessel, treating around 750 000 tonnes of concentrate, secondary materials, and scrap per year. At the time of the start-up of theNoranda Reactor in 1973, the vessel was capable of treating 750tonnes per day of a heterogeneous mixture of copper concentrates, fluxes and secondary materials to produce copper in one operation. Through process improvements, and the introduction of additional oxygen in 1982(pannell and Mackey, 1988), the daily tonnage increased to 1800 tonnes by 1988. The operation had also been changed to produce a high-grade matte instead of copper. Figure1 illustrates the main features of the reactor, a cylindrical vessel which is charged at one end and tapped at the other. The matteis subsequently processed through Peirce-Smith converters and anode furnaces before being cast into copper anodes. Figure 2 outlines the progressive increase in the furnace smelting capacity. Over this period the percentage of secondary materials, and scrap feeds also increased to approximately 110 000 tonnes per year, or 15% of the total new feed input (Bedard et al., 1991). Now operating wholly as a custom feed operation, the Home smelter can treat over 2200tonnes per day of new metal-bearing material."

Nickel oxide granules formed by pyrohydrolysis of a chloride solution, were reduced in hydrogen. Below 400 °C, an incubation period was observed, followed by very slow reduction. In the temperature range from 400 to 600 °C, the rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and increasing hydrogen pressure. Microscopic analysis showed that in this temperature range the reaction followed the shrinking core model. Above 600 °C, the reduction rate decreased noticeably before suddenly becoming very fast at and above 950 °C. Microscopy showed inner bands of metallization inside the outer metallic rim, indicating partial blockage of the interface between the reacted and un-reacted NiO core. At these temperatures, particle agglomeration and sintering were also found to take place. Surface segregation of sulphur may account for the slow down in reduction rate above 600 °C. From an industrial point of view, reduction should be carried out from 550 to 600 °C with as high a concentration of hydrogen as possible. If sintering and agglomeration are not of any concerns, reduction can be carried extremely fast at about 1000 °C.

The commercial carbonate industry of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, began about eighty years ago with the opening of the Sydney steel plant. Significant carbonate deposits are confined to the Precambrian George River Grav" and the Mississippian Windsor Group. George River Group carbonates are thought to have formed as part of a stable platformal sequence. They are crystalline and lie within a dominantly quartzitic sequence. Of the four major sites for George River carbonates on the island, the most commercially promising are the dolomite at Kelly Cove and the limestone and dolomite at Glencoe. Kelly Cove dolomite has good potential for metallurgical, agricultural and fettling purposes; reserves approach 13.6 million tonnes. Windsor Group carbonates were deposited as marine sediments in basins formed by pre-Carboniferous fault blocks. Windsor dolomite reserves at Stoney Creek are only fractionally retrievable and hence are of little economic value. The Windsor Group's Irish Cove limestone has been quarried on a large scale since 1964; no undeveloped commercial deposits, however, remain in the group.
