The schlieren technique describes an optical analysis method designed to enhance light distortions caused by air movement. The ability to visualize air flow has significant implications for analyzing underground mine ventilation systems, including the enhancement of surveys and models. Currently, traditional schlieren methods are impractical underground. Background oriented schlieren (BOS) provides a solution to this problem. BOS requires two primary components, a professional quality digital camera and a schlieren background. A schlieren background is composed of a varying contrast repetitive pattern, such as black and white stripes. This background allows the camera?s sensor to capture minor light diffractions, such as those caused by air flow. Although BOS shows great potential for ventilation analysis, sensitivity is an issue. This paper seeks to validate the BOS technique for imaging flow through a regulator by comparing BOS images with traditional schlieren images. This paper also outlines initial experimental efforts used for the validation.

At the Lake Superior meeting, September, 1904, Messrs. A. Gibb and R. C. Philp presented a paper entitled " The Constitution of Mattes Produced in Copper-Smelting,"' in which they concluded that ferrous and cuprous sulphides formed the chemical compound, 5 Cu2S, FeS. They arrived at this inference from the observed fact that a matte containing Cu,S, 90.4, and FcS, 9.6 per cent. (or, in round figures, Cu2S, 90, and FeS, 10 per cent.), did not contain any metallic copper, while one with more than 10 per cent. of FeS readily dissolved copper, and with less than this amount retained copper in mechanical suspension. Although they determined the melting-points of five mattes containing from 32.6 to 80.1 per cent. of copper, they did not draw a freezing-point curve, as the necessary apparatus was not available. A microscopical examination of 11 polished samples gave them a grayish-black field of very uniform appearance, except that five of the specimens showed the presence of metallic copper. The object of the present investigation was to supplement the above paper by drawing the freezing-point curve of the ferrous sulphide-cuprous sulphide series, and to see how the constitution could be further revealed by microscopical work. The results obtained lead to conclusions very different from those of Gibb and Philp. While their paper bears the date 1904, it was published only in 1906.2 In the meantime, Bolles3 had presented his paper, " The Concentration of Gold and Silver in Iron-Bottoms." The Palaeo-Proterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the largest known resources of high-grade hematite ore on the Southern African continent. These ores are currently being exploited at Sishen and Beeshoek. Hematite occurances on the Sishen South exploration project (some 65 km south of Sishen mine), are at present the focus of an intensive investigation. At both the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, mineralisation is found within lithologies belonging to the Transvaal and Oliphantshoek Supergroups. The Transvaal Supergroup comprises a basal, carbonate platform sequence (the Campbell Rand Subgroup) overlain by thick units of banded iron-formation belonging to the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The Asbestos Hills Subgroup is unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Gamagara Subgroup. The latter Subgroup has been correlated with the lowermost unit of the Oliphantshoek Supergroup. The Sishen and Sishen South deposits are located close to the western margin of the Kaapvaal craton and have been subjected to intensive, structural deformation. Both localities have undergone folding, faulting and thrusting. Early regional tectonism (2400 - 1700 Ma) played a critical role in the genesis and preservation of the ores from younger erosive events. At both deposits, four similar iron ore occurrences have been recognised. The ores have developed in specific depositional environments and hence display unique physical, chemical and metallurgical properties:The bulk of the high-grade hematite comprises laminated and massive ores, which are found in the upper parts of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The laminated and massive ores are best developed in basinal and pseudo-graben structures. Collapse breccia ores of medium- and lower-grade are preserved within deep palaeosinkholes. The sinkholes have developed within the dolomites of the Campbellrand Subgroup. Lower-grade conglomeratic and gritty ores constitute the remainder of the deposits. These ores are found in the overlying clastic succession of conglomerates, shales and quartzites belonging to the Gamagara Subgroup. Although, there are many stratigraphic and lithological similarities between the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, there are also important differences, which will impact on the profitable exploitation of the ores. The most striking contrast between the deposits is their size and geometry. Sishen mine is a single pit operation with an opencast mineable reserve of 895 Mt. The Sishen orebody is thicker, more continous and significantly larger than the Sishen South deposit. The Sishen South deposit has a potential opencast reserve of 228 Mt. It comprises a number of small and narrow, isolated orebodies, spread over an area of ¦64 km2 . There is a significant difference in grade between the deposits. On average the orebodies of the Sishen South deposit have a higher iron content (+0.25 per cent Fe), less potassium (- 0.090 per cent K2O) and less phosphorus (-0.019 per cent P). The Sishen South deposit has less interbedded shale in the laminated and massive ores. The footwall of these high-grade ores is a light-density, intrusive sill, compared to banded iron-formation at Sishen. With a proposed heavy-medium separation plant at Sishen South, the impact of dilution on product grades is expected to be less than that currently experienced at Sishen.

Calumet Division, Calumet & Hecla, Inc., whose operations are in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, Mich., is a highly integrated and complex organization. This division operates mines, a railroad, a concentrating mill, a reverberatory smelter, and the auxiliary generating plants and shops to service these operations. In addition, it operates a sands reclamation plant, leaching plants, a foundry, and a machine shop that serves varied industries with castings and parts for many applications. Calumet & Hecla, Inc. has produced over 60 percent of all the copper that has been produced in Michigan since discovery of the ore in 1864, and in 1959 the company ranked eight among the country's producers with a production of 17,407 tons. To keep abreast of modern accounting systems developed elsewhere in industry and to combat increasing costs due to higher labor and supply costs, as well as increased costs due to deeper mines and lower grade ore, the company has developed a modern machine cost accounting system. This not only provides the usual bookkeeping and cost accounting facilities but offers accurate cost data for engineering evaluation of the mining operation. This system is credited with being instrumental in permitting continued operation of these high-cost mines in a period of increasing costs with no corresponding increase in the price of metal.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by nine decibels. The “Inquiring Ears Want to Know” fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

The great problem at Port Pirie and many other lead smelters has always been to keep the lead content of the slags down to a low level. This has been done in the past largely by empirical methods, the lead content varying from less than 1 per cent to over 4 per cent, the more usual figure being something under 2 per cent. Subsidiary to this, but of major importance in the future, was the extraction of the considerable quantities of zinc in the slag. At this stage little was known about the constitution of the slags apartfrom their chemical composition. Some early work on slag constitution was carried out in the B.H.A.S. Research Laboratories between 1919 and 1921, but except for a microscopic examination of a few thin sections the greater part of this investigation wasdevoted to the recovery of the zinc content of the slag by leaching methods.In 1949, therefore, it was decided to initiate a programme of fundamental research into the constitution and properties of the lead blast furnace slags. The information thus gained would give a clearer picture of reactions taking place in the slag, both in the blast furnace and during dezincing.There was also the hope that these results would lead to improved industrial techniques resulting in smaller lead losses, and, taking the long-term view, to efficient methods of producing zinc from the slags.A series of investigations was therefore begun at various centres over a period of time. Foundation pile driving hammers used in New York City in the past 100 years have been drop, steam, compressed air, diesel, and hydraulic. In 1992, the first hydraulic hammer in the New York City area was purchased by Norwalk Marine Contractors, Inc. from Junttan in Finland. It was bought because of its variable energy and ease of mobilization, not because of its higher transferred energy. Heller and Johnsen engineers instrumented hydraulic hammers on nine jobs. The measured transferred energy for the nine jobs was found to average approximately 80 percent. There is no clear consensus regarding the reasons for the hydraulic hammer being more efficient in delivering energy to the pile as compared to single-acting steam/air impact hammers. To minimize pile damage during installation, and to minimize footage overruns, an up-to-date version of the wave equation software that includes an efficiency value of 0.95 for hydraulic hammers is now used.

"Chuquicamata Underground Mine is one of the main projects for the Chilean government copper company (CODELCO). Underground mine project has been under construction since 2013 and presents a solution for the lower production levels of the open pit and prolongs the life of the mine for the next 40 years. Currently, around 2000 workers operate in the mine daily. Dozens of trucks and heavy machines drives through all main routes and access in the mine. As a mine under construction not all the infrastructure necessary to operate safely in the mine has been completed. Risk of a truck or fixed facility fire is always a challenge to keep under control. One important part of fire simulation relays on what we can do prevent a fire and what can be done with the existing infrastructure to control a declared fire and start evacuation plans. This study has been made as a feasible emergency plan to implement, in this case, of a mine under construction, were limited resources are available. Several fire scenarios have been made to support all the emergency plan strategy and a detailed step by step procedure indicates what the elements of a fire emergency plan and risk analysis are.INTRODUCTIONThe main objective of this study is to describe the importance of fire risk analyses (FRAs) and different methods to be used before commencing fire simulation and methodology steps utilized for a fire emergency plan strategy (EPS) at the Chuquicamata underground mine. It also describes how to classify zones which are going to be affected by fumes and gases propagation derived from the exact location of a fire event. Fire simulation study is helpful to determine the impact on a ventilation system with the main purpose of providing relevant information to complement emergency plans and stablished control techniques in ventilation design and its operation. Most fire simulation studies only concentrates in simulation techniques on itself. But what is the next following step in developing an emergency plan? How can we evaluate, classify and treat risky areas? This study is focused mainly in the phases before and after a fire simulation process. Phases corresponds to a good FRA and how output data can be used for an EPS."

This report was prepared for the Bureau of Mines to describe the current methods of design, construction, and development of wells for in situ leaching of uranium. The discussion includes the alternatives for well design drilling equipment and fluids, grout formulation and emplacement, well integrity testing and repair, and well development and stimulation. Current practice in these areas was determined through interviews with eight operators of commercial scale in situ facilities and is also discussed. Based on this information plus the authors' experience, recommendations are made regarding well design, construction, and development tor in situ leaching.

The chromium oxide in stainless steel slags usually exists as Cr2O3. However, there is a possibility that it is oxidized to hazardous CrO3 after disposal or during use. Therefore, some technical developments to reduce chromium oxide by using a smelting reduction technique have been reported recently. This paper describes the fundamentals of the technique which have been applied to ferrochromium production and reviews the recent results in literature.

Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u'ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This is an initial progress report on a theoretical study of the iron blast furnace. The purpose is to develop a thermochemical model that will simulate mathematically a real furnace. An analysis is made of the behavior of a hypothetical furnace, operating adiabatically on pure ferric oxide, graphitic carbon, and dry air. Relationships are derived for carbon consumption, gas composition, and reaction temperature for a furnace operating at steady state, and in which the smelting rate is slow enough for the gas and solids to approach thermal and chemical equilibrium. Analyses are made for two contrasting types of gas flow: (1) Nonturbulent flow, having no vertical mixing; and (2) turbulent flow, having perfect mixing during each step of the process. It is shown that some vertical mixing is essential for complete reduction of ferrous oxide and that the extent of vertical mixing is one of the critical factors in the behavior of the furnace, This analysis indicates that the thermochemical relationships in a blast furnace can probably be best simulated by a finite series of gas-solid reactors through which gas and solids flow countercurrently and in which the temperature and composition of gases and solids are assumed to be uniform. Any degree of vertical mixing can be approximated by the proper choice of the number of reactors.

This paper attempts to model long-term production scheduling problems by chance constrained binary integer programming in a stochastic environment. This stochastic model is set up to account for ore block grade uncertainty. The probability distribution function of grade in each block is used as a stochastic input to the optimization model. This distribution function in each block should be determined using a Geostatistical Simulation approach. The deterministic equivalents of these chance constraints are then achieved, which are in the form of nonlinear in binary variables. A confidence level at which it is desired that the uncertain constraints holds, is specified in each scheduling period. Rather than the previous risk-based model, this formulation will yield schedules with a high chance of achieving planned production targets while maximizes the expectation of net present value and minimizing the variance function simultaneously. Using this method, the grade uncertainty is integrated explicitly into the optimization process.

The extension of Montparnasse Station in Paris required the construction of supports of very high unit capacity to support a particularly rigid super-structure. The majority of the site is characterized by the existence of old limestone quarries at a depth of approximately 20 metres. These workings have been backfilled in some places, have collapsed in some places and have given rise to local subsidences in the marne layers above them. This paper addresses the steps taken by the group of companies and their consultants to evaluate the equivalent stiffnesses of the supports necessary for the design of the superstructure, and gives details of the construction techniques chosen by the foundations specialist to adapt to the particular conditions encountered on this site.

Twenty-one years into the young South African democracy, economic prospects are fragile and unemployment statistics are high. According to Trading Economics (2015) the GDP growth rate in South Africa averaged 3.07% from 1993 until 2015.Through the National Development Plan 2030, the government has responded by instituting the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC) to direct national growth and drive job creation by effecting a long-term infrastructure investment programme. The Commission is mandated by Cabinet to coordinate, integrate, and accelerate implementation of more than 150 individual social and economic infrastructure plans.In the civil infrastructure development sector, increased urbanization is compelling governments and the public sector to expand safe and reliable public amenities, but the availability of real estate for construction in congested cities is a challenge. Within the mining infrastructure construction industry safe, rapid, and efficient mine extraction strategies are imperative to realize increased production, business hurdle rates, and stakeholder expectations.Asset owners and stakeholders are obliged to consider advanced mechanized underground excavation and support technologies in order to present feasible solutions timeously. From an engineering design, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) perspective tunnelling technology and boring applications have a distinct advantage over conventional excavation techniques. These solutions may enhance commerce and transportation by expanding infrastructure in concentrations of national economic activity, providing crucial linkages with rural areas, between cities, and across international borders.This paper explores the contribution by mechanized tunnelling technology and boring applications applied in conjunction with digital and automation technologies compared with conventional methodologies. The technological expertise, combined with a paradigm shift in delivery of project objectives, will promote economic growth, aid recovery from the economic downturn, and improve social development."

"The Marmara Ironworks was not the earliest ironworks in Ontario, but it was distinguished from other early works in a number of ways. It was established on an ambitious scale as a self-sufficient and, for the time, sophisticated community. In effect it was an iron plantation on the scale and scope of those at Hopewell, Pennsylvania and Saugus, Massachusetts(1). It was, besides, the only one of the few early ironworks in Upper Canada which operated almost to the end of the nineteenth century, albeit in fits and starts, and which used magnetic ores rather than bog iron ores (limonite). Furthermore it is the only works which has produced archaeological interest over a number of years. The ironworks is on the east bank of the Crowe River near Highway 7, on Lots 7 and 8, Concession 4, Marmara Township, Hastings County, Ontario. It is the property of the Village of Marmara, and the extant remains encompass about 2. 5 acres of the original 2000 or so which made up the original grant. The mineral riches of the Canadian Shield had been known since the days of the Jesuit missionary-explorers. A consortium headed by Alexander Henry and the Duke of Gloucester planned to exploit the copper near Sault Ste. Marie during the last part of the eighteenth century, but nothing came of the venture(2). This attempt may have grown out of Lord Dorchester's suggestion that private enterprise be encouraged in order that the iron ore which ""abounds"" in Canada might be exploited(3). John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada was also anxious to see iron working develop. Simcoe was eager to encourage many enterprises, among which ""the development of iron mines""(4) - Governor Gore had been approached by John Mason for help with his ironworks in Norfolk County (5). Three Americans had applied for permission and support to erect an ironworks on the Gananoque River at the falls to become known as Furnace Falls. They were granted 1000 acres of land in fee simple to encourage their endeavor(6). Sir Peregrine Maitland, only a few months after taking up his duties as Lieutenant Governor in 1818, intended to visit the ""bed of iron ore on the Crow River"" (7) - Maitland was to provide a good deal of support, both moral and substantive, to Charles Hayes when he came to Canada in 1820."

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Joe Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately N. 20 to 45° The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1926, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting.
