Coal is expected to become an increasingly important source of energy in the future. Coal production has already increased from about 650 million tons in 2975 to about 875 million tons in 1984 (Wilkinson, 1985). The declining trend of labor productivity in the early seventies was a source of concern for Consolidation Coal Company (Consol). To improve productivity, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place within Consol. Consol produces 45 million tons of coal annually with about 70 percent of the production coming from underground mines. Consol introduced longwall mining in the early seventies and currently operates about 20 longwall faces. The longwall faces are in mines in the Appalachian region in the States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The successful operation of longwall faces has contributed to a recovery of productivity and to an improvement of mine safety.

This paper has been written as one of a group of papers dealing with the subject "Cost Elements in Mining". What are cost elements in mining? The mine operator thinks of direct mining costs in terms of labor, materials, supplies and power, and we might define cost more generally as the price paid to acquire or produce something. Economic theory also has its concepts of cost. From one point of view, that of the consumer, the cost of mineral commodities might be viewed as the total price industry pays for mine output. Similarly, the mining company engaged in the on-going business of finding, developing and operating new mines is concerned very much today with the distribution of all the revenue paid for mine output and not just with its direct or controllable cash costs. In other words, what will the labor force, the supplier of energy, explosives, and reagents, and the supplier of government services, management, capital and the ore reserves receive for their contribution to production.

Meramec Mining Company is a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corp. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. which mines and pelletizes iron ore at the Pea Ridge Mine. The Pea Ridge property is located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during a lead exploration program. The first test holes drilled on the Pea Ridge magnetic anomaly revealed the presence of a large magnetite deposit; further drilling in 1956 and 1957 confirmed that the orebody was mineable, Meramec Mining Co. was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began late in the year. Production commenced in April 1964. The orebody is overlain by about 1300 feet of flat-bedded sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick. It dips about 80° and is of unknown depth. The ore is mainly high grade magnetite with small zones of specular hematite. The wall rock is a Precambrian rhyolite porphyry. The mine was initially started with five major levels on 150 foot intervals. Crosscuts were driven across the orebody on 190 foot centers. Banks of scopes were mined between the crosscuts by a modified shrinkage stoping method. This was done by undercutting a 40 foot wide by 150 foot long block and blasting horizontal "lifts" drilled on 5 foot intervals. A 65 foot still was left between levels which contained the slushing drift, fingers, crown pillar, and adequate thickness for support. By 1971 a ?lattice? of pillars had been left and mining had progressed to the point that an orderly pillar recovery program was necessary.

Milling operations throughout the world have created vast amounts of waste by-products, or tailings, which are often disposed on the land surface. The wastes may be disposed behind dams, on untreated ground, or on compacted clay or synthetic liners of impoundments and trenches. Often one of the principle concerns of environmental regulatory agencies is whether seepage from the waste pile could move through the vadose zone to the water table and possibly contaminate an aquifer. The seepage may be generated by the drainage of liquids initially deposited along with the tailings or by infiltrating meteoric water which leaches solutes from the tailings. The purpose of this article is to discuss some of the commonly held assumptions regarding storage of seepage wastes in the unsaturated zone. The significance of recent studies of water movement in dry climates which pertain to tailings site selection will be presented. The paper is relevant not only to seepage from impoundments at mill sites, but to many other fluid waste impoundments as well in part this article reinforces earlier work by Stephens and Siegel (1980) and an excellent review paper by McWhorter (1985). The present report addresses considerations in porous media; for a discussion of the effects of fractures and anisotropy in the unsaturated-zone, refer to the paper by McWhorter (1985).

This paper is a review of technological progress in mining geophysics during the past decade. This has been the most significant period in the history of mining geophysics. Among the already existing; techniques, instruments for ground -magnetic and electromagnetic prospecting, were developed that are more, portable and faster to operate. Induced polarization equipment came into widespread use. Airborne instruments of various types became available and were used to survey large areas. Drillhole instruments were developed and have had some use, and it is to be hoped will be used to a greater extent in the future. Two revolutionary new methods, the AFMAG and INPUT, were developed. The wisdom of attempting to cover such a broad field in a single paper might be questioned. There is the inevitable problem that each topic must be discussed very briefly. However, while papers describing individual instruments have appeared, many have yet to be described in the technical literature. The evolution of the ground magnetometer and electromagnetic instruments has not been discussed. It is only recently that a review article has appeared on airborne EM. The existence of review literature on some topics has meant that they are given less emphasis in this review than those topics inadequately covered. It will also be observed that stress is laid on "chose instruments that are generally available to the mining industry rather than those developed by individual exploration companies for their own use.

The Esmeralda mine is located about three miles west of the town of Parral, in the State of Chihuahua, Northern Mexico, and about 400 miles south of El Paso, Texas. The area is serviced by the Interamerican Highway and a branch line of the National Railways of Mexico. The Parral district is quite typical of the semidesert of Northern Mexico, lying near the western margin of the Chihuahua basin and range province known in Mexico as the ?Mesa Central? In the immediate mine area, low rounded hills and rolling plans slope toward the Parral River. Surface elevation at the mine is 5,800 feet. The Esmeralda vein outcrops strongly, but was too low grade to be of interest to the Spaniards, The first claims were staked in 1897 and limited exploration work to a depth of 550 feet was carried out prior to 1912, at which time work was suspended. The Eagle-Picher Company acquired the property in 1944 and by surface diamond drilling outlined an orebody to a depth of 800 feet, Minas de Iguala, S. A, de C.V., one of Eagle-Picher?s totally owned subsidiary companies in Mexico, then unwatered the old workings, developed the mine, installed a modern differential flotation plant and started production lage in 1948. To the present, more than two and ahalf million tons of ore have been mined and milled producing lead and zinc concentrates.

A common problem in mineral processing and chemical engineering is the need to estimate flow rates and/or weight ratios involved with engineering operations for which it is inherently difficult to directly measure stream weights. Simple examples of this situation include stream separators (a classifier operating on a particle flow) and stream mixers (the mixing of new feed and circulating load in a ball mill circuit). Often in these types of operations, it is possible to sample the streams involved to get approximate component analyses (e.g. size distributions of solid streams, chemical composition of chemical streams). In this paper various formulae are developed which can be used to estimate stream flow rates or weight ratios given information on the stream components. The type and level of experimental error present in the stream component analyses does have an important bearing on the numerical values (and reliability) of the weight ratios calculated by the various formulae. A simple but theoretically sound method is shown for selecting appropriate estimation formulae for any given engineering operation. The derived formulae are applied to sets of experimental classification data for illustration purposes.

In a recent paper we have reviewed principles and applications of measurement methods for contact angles and their hysteresis (22). In this paper we apply these methods to a system consisting of rutile, an organic liquid (benzene, decane, or dodecane) and water. Surfactant (dodecylamine hydrochloride) was used at various concentrations and various pH values.

A novel tracing technique employing specifically prepared trace particles has been applied to coal preparation separatory systems. The technique employs individually prepared trace particles representing specific known sizes and densities of coal particles. These trace particles are injected into the feed, to the processing circuit, and are then detected at locations in the coal product and refuse streams. It is anticipated that on-line input of the generated partition data will be linked with computer technology to provide rapid analysis of the processing efficiency, and to allow for process control. This tracing technique can revolutionize many processing operations from the diagnostic viewpoint as well as from the coal processing standpoint.

New methods of reducing stopping leakage have been investigated by Mine Safety Appliance Research Corporation, working under contract to the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It was found that proper construction techniques are far more important in reducing leakage than the type of sealant used, provided the sealant has sufficient adhesion and strength. Leakage could also be substantially reduced by brushing on modified mortar sealants rather than using the accepted method of trowelling them on.

Talc deposits in the Precambrian of southwestern Montana (Beaverhead and Madison Counties) are unique within the U. S. A. in that large bodies of tremolite-free talc can be open-pit mined. All known deposits are in pre-Beltian dolomite units. The origin is suspected to be metasomatic, with the siliceous component having been contributed by an intrusive Precambrian granite gneiss. Precambrian deformation was extreme and is characterized by multiple periods of tight isoclinal folding and the flowage of less competent rocks, rather than by faulting. Post- Precambrian folding has been relatively negligible; the characteristic Laramide structure is block-faulting developed along northwest-southeast trends. The talc is thought to have been formed in Precambrian time; the high-angle block-faults probably have no significance with regard to the formation of the talc, but do tend to complicate mining operations. Tremolite-free talc ore bodies with horizontal widths of more than 200 feet, vertical depths of several hundreds of feet, and strike-lengths of as much as one-half mile are known in the Ruby Range and the Gravelly Range. Where dolomite is interbedded with tremolite-free talc in the Gravelly Range, the scale of this relationship permits the use of conventional open-pit mining methods with subsequent upgrading by hand-sorting techniques. Underground mining has been used in the past, but all current Montana talc-mining operations are on the surface. The hand-sorted ore, some of which is shipped overseas, is finely ground or micronized in roller mills and fluid-energy mills. The products are distributed both nationwide and abroad.

Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. Introduction This chapter contains brief discussions of various environmental protection requirements that relate to underground mining operations. Environmental disturbances at an underground mining operation can result from subsidence; water discharges; waste dumps; construction and operation of access roads and utility lines; construction and operation of surface facilities such as maintenance shops, bathhouses, and storage yards; and emanation of dust and noise from surface crushers. Construction and operation of a concentrator or washing plant may result in the emission of air pollutants, the discharge of water pollutants, the creation of noise, and disturbance of the surface. Tailings ponds can be the source of fugitive dust.1 This chapter is not intended to provide a detailed discussion and analysis of laws and regulations dealing with environmental protection. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with a basic awareness of the existence and nature of such laws and regulations, as well as the procedural requirements that must be followed in complying with them. The body of law relating to environmental protection has grow" very rapidly and should continue to do to for some time. Because many of the laws have been enacted recently, numerous court decisions are being rendered to resolve disputes over their interpretation. Hence, the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes and regulations, and new case law. Rules and regulations pertaining to environmental protection are implemented at all governmental levels. The most widely known laws are those enacted by the federal government that have nationwide applicability. However, separate requirements exist in each state, county, and municipality. Because of their general applicability, federal laws are discussed most extensively in this chapter. Ownership of the property is the most significant factor considered in ascertaining what rules govern the conduct of an operation thereon. If the land is held under lease, reference to the lease terms must be made in the first instance to determine what obligations must be met in order to prevent default and possible loss of the property. If the land is held under a lease from the federal government, the operator is subject not only to compliance with the lease terms, but also to a large body of laws and administrative regulations that pertain generally to the conduct of mining operations on land held under federal leases. Although operations on unpatented mining claims, the legal title to which remains in the federal government, are not subject to the same rules and regulations that are applicable to operations conducted pursuant to federal leases or permits, they soon will be governed by a special set of regulations that provide for protection of surface resource.2 Operations conducted on lands leased from a state usually are subject to numerous environmental protection requirements specified in the lease terms, in addition to rules and regulations promulgated by the state agency having jurisdiction over mining on state lands. Operations conducted on privately held lands are subject to fewer such requirements. Leases from private parties sometimes have environmental protection and reclamation requirements written into them, but generally to a far lesser extent than governmental leases. Operations conducted on properties owned by the operator are subject only to those laws and regulations that have general applicability without regard to land ownership. COAL SURFACE MINING CONTROL AND RECLAMATION ACT OF 1977 Introduction On Aug. 3, 1977, the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was signed into law.3 It governs coal-mine operations on private lands, as well as on public lands. The Act is pervasive in its scope and is extremely long and complex. The basic purpose of the Act is to control and minimize the environmental effects of surface coal mining. Surface coal-mining operations are defined as activities conducted on the surface of lands in connection with a surface coal mine and surface impacts incident to an underground coal mine.4 The Act is administered by the Secretary of the Interior through a new agency named the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.5 The Act contains detailed environmental protection standards and reclamation requirements, and it establishes a permit system for all surface coal-mining operations. Mining in certain areas and under ceri-in conditions is restricted or prohibited, and a mechanism for enforcement by the states is provided. Stiff penalties are provided in the event of noncompliance. Implementation Schedule Nonfederal Lands: As required by Section 501 of the Act, interim regulations setting mining and reclamation performance standards based on and incorporating standards set out in Section 502(c) were adopted effective Dec. 13, 1977.6 They will. be incorporated as amendments to Chapter VII of Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations. Permanent regulatory procedures for surface coal-mining and reclamation operations performance standards, which were directed to be promulgated by Aug. 3, 1978, were published in proposed form on Sept. 10, 1978. 7 They govern surface coal-mining operations in any state until a permanent state or federal program is adopted. As of Feb. 3, 1978, all new operations, and as of May 3, 1978, all existing surface coal-mining operations, on lands on which such operations are regulated by a

Heap leaching provides a method of economically recovering gold from low grade ores with low capital and reasonable operating costs. As with conventional methods, alkaline cyanide solutions are used for leaching. Since gold (and silver) is (are) present as the native metals, oxygen (as air) is required to oxidatively complex the metals with the cyanide. Oxygen depletion can readily occur adversely affecting recovery. The addition of low levels of hydrogen peroxide during leaching can lead to significant increases in both rate of recovery and total recovery. This process allows for the use of shorter pad times or deeper heaps and increases the gold (silver) concentration to the recovery circuit and thus can reduce cyanide losses by virtue of permitting the use of less total leach solution per ton of ore processed.

Silica sand has been mined in Illinois from the St. Peter Sandstone since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Ottawa on the Illinois River in the north-central part of the state. Production of this sand, consumed mainly by the glass and foundry industries but also sought after for many other uses, has grown with the economy, and last year's output in Illinois exceeded 4,000,000 tons. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey, and a very complete report was issued in 1928, authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the sand has changed very little during the intervening 40 years, so that much of Lamar's data and descriptions are applicable today. More recently, the stratigraphy of the St. Peter Sandstone in north-central Illinois has become better known from the work of Willman and Payne (1942). The present authors have borrowed generously from Lamar's publication, and we wish to acknowledge the contribution of both of these studies to our work.

For the past 50 years, the primary crushing of stone at the Dolase Bros. Co. Richards Spur Quarry. 13 miles north of Lawton, Oklahoma, has been accomplished by a Traylor 42-inch gyratory crusher. The production capacity of the primary system, consisting of a feeder, grizzly, and the gyratory crusher, was approximately 2100 tons per hour. Shot-down scone was hauled from the working face about one mile to the feeder by a fleet of Caterpillar Model 773's and WABCO 60- and 65-ton trucks. In order to maintain production, nine to ten trucks and four Caterpillar Model 992 front-end loaders were required to be operational at all times.
